i.

Jungwon hates daffodils.

He couldn’t bring himself to look at you lying lifelessly on the hospital bed, asleep. He quickly gets up on his feet when he hears you cough loudly. Clutching your hand, he helps you sit up on the bed as you continuously cough. The both of you watch as yet another daffodil petal covered in your blood falls onto your hands.

Jungwon’s heart breaks as he watches you stare helplessly at the petal in your hand. He hates how he knows who it is who doesn’t return your feelings, and he did his best not to bring it up. But you knew who it was too; besides, you were the one in love with him.

You look up at Jungwon, softly calling his name. He immediately jolts his head up to look at you. “What do daffodils symbolise?” you ask weakly, peering down at the flower petal resting in your hands.

“Y/N…” Jungwon knew what you were thinking, and he couldn’t bear to see your heart broken. “J-jungwon, please. J-just tell me,” you say weakly, coughing again as yet another petal falls into your hands. Jungwon lets out a soft sigh, “Unrequited love.”

You chuckle weakly, “Well, I guess that’s about right.”

Jungwon knew exactly what you meant. Ever since you were 8 years old, all you did was gush over that boy who sat next to you in class, Park Jongseong. The two of you had been assigned partners in Math class and your friendship only blossomed over time. But unexpectedly, so did your love for him.

Jungwon was a good friend of yours and Jongseong. He wanted the best for you, spending the last ten years trying to get Jongseong to develop feelings for you, so that you could finally have the one you love. But Jongseong never did fall for you. He dated any and every girl but you.

Jungwon knew how much you loved Jongseong and how hurt you had gotten all these years when Jongseong had never even spared a glance at you. “I’m sorry, Y/N,” was all he had to say when he heard about the fatal disease you had gotten.

Although it was not Jongseong’s fault, Jungwon felt that somehow it was and had expected something more than a mere apology from him. His wrath became more apparent when he shot Jongseong an icy stare as his balled fists started to turn white at his knuckles.

Before his fists could come into contact with Jongseong’s face, he felt a warm tingling sensation as his eyes flitted to your hand that was gripping weakly onto his wrist. You give him a weak smile as you let out a cough, a couple more flower petals falling onto the bed.

“I’m getting the surgery,” you inform the nurse standing by the foot of your bed. Jungwon immediately takes a seat next to you, grasping your tiny hand. “I’ll forget Jongseong, won’t I?” your voice was a soft whisper, but Jungwon could hear you crystal clear. “It’s for the best, Y/N.”

“Jungwon… p-promise me y-you’ll still be by my s-side after all this ends. Even if I d-don't seem like myself anymore.” Jungwon could see the fear in your eyes as you awaited his response.

“I promise.”

ii.

You hate the colour white.

The four white walls enclosed around you, the familiarity of the scene suffocating you. You’ve always associated the colour white with heaven but this felt nothing like it. You could only stand by and watch as Jungwon continuously coughed out gardenias stained with his blood.

It made your stomach churn seeing the once white flower petals fall slowly yet gracefully onto the floor. It reminded you of the time when you were lying in the same bed, coughing out daffodil petals. It was a faint memory, but unforgettable.

Hanahaki – a fatal disease you had gotten, but you had least expected Jungwon to be diagnosed with it too. You were desperate to find out who it was that didn’t return his feelings.

The gardenia petals on the floor reminded you of the time when Jungwon brought you out stargazing on your birthday. He had given you a bouquet of gardenias just before he laid out the mat for the two of you to lie on.

Jungwon had been your friend for as long as he could remember and the two of you often hung out together. But that day was just different. He had intended to confess his feelings to you. His hands were clammy and sweat trickled down the back of his neck as he watched you bite into an egg sandwich that he had made.

Gardenias – a symbol of secret love. He knew you wouldn’t know but it was enough when he sees the wide grin on your face as you brought the bouquet close to your nose, taking in the creaminess reminiscence of coconut.

But now, he lies helplessly on the hospital bed, the same look of adoration in his eyes as he watches you converse with the nurse about his condition. “Jungwon, you have three days left. Please, just get the surgery,” you tell him, your voice edged with fear and panic.

“I don’t want to forget about her, Y/N.”

An inarticulate sound escaped you, forced from your lips by the pang of sudden frustration from Jungwon stubbornness. “Look, I know it’s a terrible time to ask this but, who is she? Does she mean that much to you?”

Jungwon attempts to let out a small chuckle at your frustration but he coughs out another four petals covered in his blood. “I-it’s you, Y/N.”

You unconsciously shake your head vigorously in disbelief. You must have heard him wrongly. He must be mistaken. It isn’t you. It can’t be you. You let out a half-hearted laugh, “Jungwon, now is no time for jokes.”

“Do you know what flower this is?” he asks you, picking up a flower petal on the bed. You suppress a shiver as panic and confusion surged through your body. “It’s a gardenia petal,” Jungwon continues, his voice soft and soothing.

“I know that, Jungwon. You gave me a bouquet of them on my birthday.”

“Gardenias symbolise secret love,” Jungwon lets the flower petal slip through his fingers as he turns his head to look at you. Tears prick in your eyes as your mind connects all the dots, making sense of what Jungwon was telling you.

You inflicted this pain on him.

You were the reason he hasn’t agreed on the surgery?

“I’m so sorry. And I know my apology doesn’t do anything but–”

“It’s alright, Y/N. It's not your fault,” he cuts you off, feeling a piercing pain in his heart when he sees the tears falling down your cheeks uncontrollably. He holds your face in his hands, wiping away the tears with his thumbs. He gives you a sad smile as he whispers, “Please stop crying.”

“Jungwon, y-you have to get the s-surgery. Please,” you say between hiccups, wiping the tears from your cheeks only for more tears to flow down.  He lets out a soft sigh, nodding his head slowly. “Promise me you won’t spend years chasing helplessly after someone again.”

“I promise.”

iii.

You take your time walking to class, knowing you don’t have anything waiting for you there. Your heart aches when you spot Jungwon at the back of the class, speaking to Jongseong as per usual.

You wish you had more time to fall in love with him. Maybe that way things wouldn’t have to come to this. But then again, you had already been given ten years, which you had spent chasing after someone who couldn’t care less about you.

It makes you remember the times you’ve spent with Jungwon. Reminiscing the moments you had with him made you realise the tiny hints he had left you. The signs that he had feelings for you.

Every time you felt insecure about yourself, he’d always say, “You’re perfect just the way you are.” And those days when you’d cry over the fact that Jongseong hadn’t noticed you, he would wrap his arms around you, whispering soothing words into your ear. He was your pillar of support, the one who had always loved and cared for you.

You remember the little features and habits that Jungwon has. His bright, dimpled smile never fails to make your stomach do a backflip. You found his habit of pulling his sleeves down till his hands were hidden cute.

You recall the butterflies in your stomach whenever you felt Jungwon’s unwavering gaze on you. The way your heart instantaneously thumped twice as fast and hard whenever his shadow looms over you right before he takes a seat next to you.

And in that moment, you realised that amidst those times you’ve blindly chased after Jongseong, Jungwon had already found a special place in your heart. But now, he’s gone. You whisper under your breath the words he had hoped to hear for the past ten years.

“I love you.”

But it was too late.

Dream magic is a path of witchcraft where you can become lucid in your dreaming state to manipulate what happens in the dreams (lucid dreaming, not reality shifting). This is a more advanced form of magic, not because it’s inherintanly dangerous, but because it is very hard to do from a beginners stand point.
