I will not hold back here and I will post most pics again under the cut for easier comprehension so you don’t gotta scroll up and down all the time.

I’m so hyped to ramble about them, thank you!

We start with the ancestors of the common jawbreaker cow.

In our real world cows descent from auerochs which honestly were already perfect before domestication so the cows we have now look barely different.

The Jawbreaker ochs in Calorum faced the same fate as our ochs; being all caught and kept in captivity the wild ones died out impossibly fast while selective breeding created so many new kinds of cows.

Jawbreaker ochs are very easily differentiated from a Jawbreaker cow by virtue of colour. The wild ancestors used to be single coloured with only shade differences, the domestic counterparts are colourful and most of them are white on the outside. The Jawbreaker ochs also only existed in three colourrs: red, blue and green

These colours rarely mixed in herds and if they did the calfs would usually adapt to the most prominent colour in the herd thanks to genes in Calorum also taking one’s surroundings into account.

You can tell the difference in sex by the colour of the outter, speckled layer in relation to the inner layers. This red one is a bull (I only realized after finishing it that i made a red bull joke) which you can tell bc the darker layers are thicker and therefor make up more of the body.

The big green one is female, therefore layers lighter in colour than the outter most shell are thicker on her.

The small one’s layer stripes are all about the same thickness. That is bc Jawbreaker cows aren’t actually assigned any gender at birth. Depending on what traits they evolve, how good they are at certain things and what their priorities are they can be either a bull or a cow or both or neither or switch around.

This fluidity also applies to Jawbreaker cows, od course, as these species are still very closely related despite looking vastly different.

As part of deciding how to colour code the cows like actual jawbreakers and trying to keep track of different variations of actual cows I made this handy guide for myself

Featuring - the additive colour mixing chart

It shows how originally there were only three colours of ochs but through breeding the colours literally mixed until the white ones came into existence a few generations down the domestication.

- horns and ears

I spent hours looking at all diffferent breeds of cows I could find and drew the features that seemed unique. These of course all vary wildly in size and angle from cow to cow but these are the shapes i saw repeating when i looked closely.

I also noticed two extra attributes cow breeds can have which are a) a hump on their back and b) long fut

Going off of those points I tzen drew some fun combos, just to see if my work would get coherent results

That’s what this sheet ended up being and I do love them, they all ended up with so much personality. (the reason I didn’t colour them is bc they’re rather small and that makes it far less fun to do that)

You can also see here the highlander’s outter colour is yellow and the inside colours are exclusively variations of red, green and yellow bc red and green are used to mix yellow in additive colour mixing. I wanted this to show how by breeding the original three colours together whichever way seemed most convenient at the time we eventually ended up with most jawbreaker cows being white on the outside with any and all colours ans shades on the inside, all thanks to wildly mixed ancestry.

And yes, that means you can’t really tell a Jawbreaker cows gender anymore simply by looking at their colours. Experts can determine it through studying their behavor and other small clues within the herd structure, so in good conditions you rarely need to examine a Jawbreaker physically. If they have a healthy environment around them it is also entirely unnecessary as the cows can balance the herd by themselves.

The horns and hoofs and even the ball at the end of their tails are by the way not the exact same as the rest of their entire body. Much like it was already stated in acoc, just bc it’s the same candy doesn’t mean it’s the same thing. Their horns specifically are incredibly hard and durable, also pretty,which makes them excellent material for weapons or other tools. But since cow horns don’t really grow back once cut and it is a very painful experience for the cow, it is a pretty rare and expensive material.

Another thing Jawbreaker cows have in common with ours is their behavioral health. Cows are very playful animals, they need a lot of space and enrichment and company and cleanliness and variety and so on and so forth.

While no cow can swim, incuding Jawbreakers, they love to play in the soda like rain of Candia for example. The rain fizzes a little on their hard candy skin, which they find very fun. For a while at least, like almost every animal they should never be out in the rain for too long. After playing in the rain they will gladly snuggle into sugar grass straw to dry off, which is an important part to keep their skin healthy and dense and help them gain that signature colour twirling between the layers of their skin which Jawbreaker cows are known for.

I drew these three bubbles to show how the looks of their skin can easily portray health.

Description of hurt animals starts here. The end is signified with a “Now.” alone in it’s own paragraph well after the next pic, hopefully you can spot it easily.

Like most Candians they bleed thick, syrupy kind of blood which seeps out between their layers, if the skin is damaged drastically. The blood helps close up wounds and crusts over. This does leave uneven and bumpy scars that look like old melted sugar but it also gives an extra layer of protection on that area.

When a severe injury is thoroughly cleaned and treated well, one can see the scratches and holes that are left in the hard candy skin. As long as they aren’t bleeding anymore these can be left as they are, but are incredibly fragile and prone to breaking further. Think- biting into a lollipop, that stuff just keeps crumbling.

To fully heal such an injury, the skin needs to be treated with what is essentially polishing the defects out of the skin. Jawbreaker cows are well capable of doing that themselves with enough room and materials to do so; and a person can do it as well if they know how to. Trees, rocks, grass, dirt; most anything can be helpful to sand down their skin if they rub against it or roll in it enough. People usually have more effective tools.

On that note, a friend asked what i think differently hurt Jawbreaker cows look like for reasons I’ll get to later in this post. So here are some examples and their lil stories along with them

If you don't wanna read about hurt and/or abused animals skip to underneath the paragraph that's just a bold 'Now.'

a) We start out with a depiction of the Jawbreaker cow’s most extreme stress response. Self mutilation is a surprisngly common behavior in real life animals too. While most studies focus on the countless mammel species that self harm due to depression or other factors, the most well known example is probably how captive birds will start ripping out their own feathers which inevitably leads to them growing sick and dying.

My fictional cows can do something similar. Their signature tails are as hard as their horns and can be used like a small wrecking ball. With it they can harm everything unwelcome that’s too close to them and of course also themsleves if there is no other way out.

Most mistreated Jawbreaker cows will show at least some signs of these injuries. The one in this example resorted to very extremely hurting themselves, due to high stress from being seperated from their herd and kept alone.

They were integrated into a new herd eventually and now are rarely seen alone anymore.

b) I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that everybody who knows how bullfighting works despises the concept with murderous wrath, or at least that’s how I feel. So of course I had to include a poor bull who’s fate was just that.

He was a very active bull to be fought due to his immense fighting spirit and stubbornness. He bears a lot of slashing and piercing wounds that were only treated enough to show off how much he had already taken. In his last fight he crashed into the side of the arena and his front left leg and right horn unfortunately broke off which led to his forceful retirement. Kept in a small stall out of the way until his fate was decided he did take to starting to whip at himself with his tail out of frustration. To get at least a little more profit out of him an attempt was made to cut off his second horn as well but luckily he got rescued before that was completed.

Despite all his grave injuries he never gave up fighing to stay active.

c) This handsome young bull was used as a poster child for the breeder he was born at. To make sure he always showed off his best side his hind legs and midriff were tied to the stall to stop him from rampaging in frustration while keeping him looking presentable. To assure he wouldn’t start bashing himself with his tail it was simply pinned to the wall behind him and eventually cut off when he squirmed too much for it to look good.

After finally being freed he now mostly runs rounds around the field, seemingly not missing his tail and just enjoying stretching his legs.

d) Lastly we have a good gurl inspired by my friend who started the idea going “did you do one that melted yet?” and me sarcastically going “oh geez, no, pffft, how’d i forget that??”

So she might look melted and she also kind of is, but most of this look comes from the fact that when her left front got burned badly enough to break under her outter shell, nobody cared about her enough to make sure it healed well. She didn’t have the space, or materials to carve out her scar by herself- and obviously no person wanted to do it either, so she got stuck with an ugly, melted sugar, crystalized syrup looking wound.

Hopefully now that she has a new home she can get to cleaning up a bit, otherwise her new owners will do it for her.

Now.

You noticed I was talking about little happy endings for each Jawbreaker here- so let me elaborate on that as well.

In researching what very little information is out there about the real life candy jawbreaker I found that the most basic, oldest version of it was an Italian treat for children where they would coat an almond in so so many layers of sugar that it wouldn’t melt so easily anymore and kids could be entertained for longer while eating it.

That made me think of Brennan in an adventuring party saying that all the nuts would be a small borderfolk group, like spices are. Since nuts are technically speaking fruits and,  almods specifically, are used in so many sweets and famously also for milk, I imagined it rather reasonable for an almond to be around the area where those three food borders meet in Calorum.

And so I decided that I needed to make an OC that is an almond who moved to Candia to open a Jawbreaker cow farm. Why? Well firstly just bc I said so, but I agreed that we need a better reason shortly after creating her. So I asked that friend of mine, who would go on to be equally as obsessed with Jawbreaker cows as I am, to create a Candian OC love interest for my Almond to run a farm with. And thus I was immediatly blessed with an adorable gummy bear to complete my lovely gay farmer dreams!

As you can see, I unfortunately never got around to colouring them (bc lining traditional art is the crazy-murderous-bulbian that stands between me and finishing any started drawings) so let me give you a not very brief physical description of these nameless women Nope, scratch that. They finally both have names and one transed their gender! (just in time for this post to wrap up)

Almond: Nellie Dulcis; she/her (Almond means Mandel in german and that reminded me of Nelson Mandela so i yoinked Nellie as her first name. Dulcis is part of the almond's botanical name and in latin for 'sweet')

I wanted her to be a muscly, but short person, obviously capable of doing hard work on a farm. Most of the shapes on her body are almond shaped which luckily works well for that. Her skin is brown and striped like an unpeeled almond, sore skin or shallow wounds would reveal the creme colour underneath. That same classic peeled almond beige is also her eye colour. Her shirt is tan coloured and dotted like the shell of almonds are. Instead of hair she has a cute little leaf growing from the back of her neck up over her head. Her pants would probably be a desaturated or darker green, to match her outfit and brown boots for simplicity. Or something like that, we only know for sure if the colours of that outfit work if and when i get around to finishing a drawing of her so.. yeah.

She's pan btw, it's a pun on the most promiment producer of irl jawbreaker candies being the Ferrero Pan company

Gummy Bear: Alba Ursa; all pronouns [for simplicity i will use they/them in this paragraph (basically dawn bear in latin, bc orange gummy bear. My friend is way better at these punny names)

From the very beginning on, both my friend and I wanted one of our farmers to be trans bc gender can not contain us and though it's not set in stone yet what gender identity they'll end up with for now their gender is: yes

They're an orange flavored gummy bear with a lot of air bubbles in their body which makes them adorably freckled imo. They mostly present female, love flowers and gardening in general. They mostly wear dark overalls in brown, blue, purple or green. The hanky is probably gonna be red, but not a bright red.

But i don't wanna tell you too much about them as this post is about the Jawbreaker cows and not them. If you're interested tho, my friend @kingofracoons finally made a tumblr and is planning on posting a lot about this couple. Now on with the post

Together they made their childhood dream a reality and opened a Jawbreaker cow ranch specifically to rescue mistreated Jawbreakers. Later on, when Candia suddenly grew in size, their prospering ranch and their great reputation, lead to them expanding to also breed cows with the specific goal of getting some specimens close enough to the original ochs to be released into the wild. This, again, mirrors irl ochs breeding, but here it has the specific purpose that ochs and other huge herbivores are essential for all kinds of animals to thrive in nature.

I won't go into too fine of detail because I could go on for ages about this little circle of nature and that's not Jawbreaker cow specific enough for this post.

Another small part of their ranch is that they welcome children to tour it and have little workshops for entertainment and stuff.

And through many layers of child imagination and magic crackling through Candia, a new spirit of the sweetening path is created.

One day a child says they say a Jawbreaker in the forest, walking like a person and that starts snowballing. They created a myth of a Jawbreaker minotaur living in the forest, protecting nature, beautiful and gentle as a mild day in Highbloom but capable of distruction like an avalanche off the Great Stone Candy Mountains if you harm nature.

I could talk about this unnamed spirit for at least two more paragraphs but at this point we're going a bit too deep for probably anybody who asked so... Thank you

max emilian verstappen is a dutch streamer most known for his hilarious sim racing and trying to play call of duty. max has been dating red bull's number 1 driver, y/n l/n, since late 2021. he is 26 years old, only 3 years older than y/n. as of right now, he lives in Monaco with l/n in their shared apartment, but does have another house in the Netherlands close to his mom (y/n and he go there often).

the pair has two bengal cats, jimmy and sassy, that they both love.

max was most known for dating model kelly piquet from 2019 to early 2021, but the couple had a mutual breakup. max first met y/n at a fan event after max placed first in one of the first Red Bull F1 challenges. everyone says they hit it off during summer break.

a little hidden fact is that max used to kart with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc when they were younger. an interview video resurfaced and many fans now love to tease the two whenever they're seen together. click here for the link!

Dunno! I've been reached out to already for a few opportunities but right now, I'm just trying to have fun with it and keep it mine until I feel like the idea is fully realized and ready for something bigger. Right now, I'm shooting to make a lil pilot animatic mostly on my own with help from a few friends

Depends on what you mean by a lot but I'd say a soft yes

For Aika, just generally other anime protagonists from shoujo and shonen. I feel like when you're doing a spin on something you do have to rely on the tropes from the genre at least a little bit. For Zira, Toko Fukawa was the jumping off point but they're very different. They're also both based off of aspects of myself (I feel like most artists do this with their ocs tho). Style and story-wise, I was definitely looking at Doremi and Panty&Stocking. That chunky cute look that's distinctly anime but takes some notes from Western cartoons. But mine's flipped where it's more based on my own style from working in Western animation but then having anime influence. And story-wise I like how they're more episodic with an underlying story. The magical girl stuff is more a backdrop that helps the story move forward and enhances the slice of life stuff that's being focused on.

I'm not sure what kind of humor to say other than my own? But my sense of humor has been shaped by Big City Greens (obviously) Adventure Time, Jimmy Neutron, Bob's Burgers, Smiling Friends and many other things but hopefully that gives you the gist

Steve finds you sitting with your head down on the stairs of the house. The closer he gets to you, the louder the music is and he winces as he remembers how he used live for these kind of parties.

Now looking at you, he can only think of it as something he hates. Sure, the dancing, the drinks are fun, but getting left alone by friends isn't. Steve can't even count, how many times he was left alone at some party. It's too many.

He hates that your friends left you alone, but he's glad you called him, because he can now make sure you're gonna be okay.

He approaches you carefully, so he doesn't scare you, "Hi, sweetheart."

You immediately cheer up, lifting your head up quickly. You smile big at him and basically throw yourself around his neck, almost knocking him to the ground.

"Woah, woah, I'm happy to see you, too," Steve chuckles and hugs you back.

"Stevie, what are you doing here?" you ask happily. You called Steve to pick you up, which you clearly don't remember anymore.

"I came to take you home," he tells you amused, "c'mon let's get you moving."

Steve stands both of you up and you don't let go off of him, even as he starts to walk you to the car. And he's okay with that, he doesn't mind, that you've leaned with almost your entire weight against him.

What gets him a little flustered are your words. You start whispering all kind of nice words, compliments to him, that he's sure, you would be too shy to say sober.

By the time, you get to the car, Steve's cheeks are burning. He curses under his breath, because he knows, he's going to be teased even before he steps a foot into the car.

And he's right. Straight away Eddie, Robin and Nancy grin at him. You notice the three of them and smile drunkenly at them.

"Hi guys, you came, too?" you ask as you plop yourself without a care in the world next to Robin sitting in the back seat.

"Hi babe, " Robin greets you, while Steve squeezes in the seat next to you.

Your attention immediately goes from Robin back to Steve. You slide closer to him, as close as you can and you almost end up sitting in his lap. They all laugh at that.

"I missed you, Stevie, " you whisper, or more like you tell him very loudly, so the whole car hears it. Steve chuckles, because you were together few hours ago.

"I missed you, too." Steve tells you and puts one arm around you. You snuggle impossibly closer to him.

"I didn't sign up for this cuddle session, when I agreed to drive," Eddie mutters from the front of the car.

"Sorry, Eds. Did you want a hug, too?" you ask innocently.

"No, no, it's okay, you just keep hugging Steve. Lord knows how much he loves it," Eddie teases Steve again and Steve just glares at him. But it's true. He loves being close to you, maybe it's because he loves you. And maybe he'd get to hold you close more often, if he had the guts to confess his feelings to you.

"I love it, too, Stevie," you state and hide your face into Steve's front. It takes you only a few minutes to fall asleep, completely at ease in Steve's arms.

Steve can only smile and hold you tightly, as the blush comes back to his cheeks. He ignores the teasing smirks and looks from everybody.

Steve will survive the teasing, if it means he gets to hold you close. Anytime.

you felt bad for almost laughing at his childish behaviour, but at the same time lucky because you were the only one who gets to see the reo mikage like this. "we're engaged, but sure yes i still love you very dearly." you made sure your tone was confident enough to wipe that expression out of his handsome face.

you caressed his cheek with your hand, rubbing your thumb across his skin in comfort. reo couldn't help but lean forward your loving touch that made him feel he was in the safest place he could ask for. you gave him a kiss on the tip of his nose and he chuckled sheepishly at the action.

"i feel very loved right now." he says as a little blush crossed his face with his usual grin back on it place.

he pointed his finger at his forehead, "i want one here." as you gave him a kiss where he pointed you couldn't help but let a smile slip on your face, nagi didn't seem to mind as long as he felt your affection.

this time it was each finger pointing at one of his cheek, "here too." you don't know if it consider cheating but he looked so eager you simply obeyed and gave him a pack each cheek.

"and here." finally he pointed at his lips for a final request, the cherry on top. your lips against his were always heavenly, like you two were kissing for the first time and it still made him light-headed when you two parted. the tip of his ears getting red as you spared him a shining smile that was to him the brightest light in the merciless cold night that he was begging to warm his iced heart to make his heart beat again.

Heyo! So I happened to see your recent ask response regarding Zenos randomly, and, honestly, I'm kind of curious on what people miss about his character! I'm not a personal big fan of him(ngl he kind of creeped me out with his, projecting himself on the wol it felt like? Note I say that as a WHM main who plays as truly heroic WoL(s) most of the time admittedly, so most of his stuff made me go no? alot XD I don't mind people who do like him tho! They're cool!), but I'm interested in understanding him better if possible, cause I know I miss things that others don't and I don't think I've seen anyone explain his intricacies without being somewhat rude about it, but you explained what you did without coming off as that. So I'm kind of curious on that essay you almost wrote if you'd be alright writing it XD (Sorry for being on anon, I am, very shy qwq)

So, I first want to say thank you for being brave enough to reach out to me about this, even on anon!! I’m really glad that you didn’t find my comments to be rude, as that is the very last thing that I would want! If anyone did find me too abrasive in my previous post above, then I wholeheartedly apologize for that. Alright, now let’s get to the topic at hand: Zenos, and why I truly think that he is the most misunderstood character in FFXIV.

Zenos: The Most Misunderstood Character in FFXIV

((I wrote way too much, so it’s under the cut.))

Alright, so let’s start with what I have seen as the popular take on Zenos that I see as wrong: A lot of players see Zenos as a one dimensional character that has no depth, and doesn’t have a character arc in which he grows as a character. They see him as the annoying antagonist who has a battle boner for the WoL and that’s it. They only see his bloodlust and nothing else. They don’t think there is anything else to him, and that’s where I must strongly disagree.

So, how is he not a one dimensional character? Well, that’s because he really is a complex character, but you need to be paying close attention to what Zenos is actually saying and what his actions are throughout the story.

One can piece together Zenos’ complexity purely from watching the cutscenes, but just in case anyone is curious about going into more depth on his backstory, then I highly recommend that you go read his side story from the Chronicles of Light book entitled “The Hunt Begins”. It shows how Zenos was raised, and it reinforces why he thinks the way that he does.

Without going into his backstory too much, for brevity's sake, Zenos is actually a prodigy, someone who was born with not only incredible strength, but also incredible intelligence, and you know what happens when gifted kids don't get enough of a challenge? Yup, they get easily bored. So keep that in mind as we move along. Now, mix that boredom with a good dose of Anhedonia, or the inability to experience pleasure or joy. Now we aren't sure if he was born with Anhedonia, or if he acquired it through some mental health condition, such as PTSD, depression, etc. I'm no psychologist whatsoever, so I'm not here to diagnose Zenos with any particular disorder, but it is clear that he suffers from the lack of feeling joy or pleasure in his life.

This is actually what characterizes Zenos the most when we first are introduced to him in 4.0; he is suffering from Anhedonia AND Ennui, which according to Webster's Dictionary, is not just a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction, but its a profound sense of boredom that arises from feeling jaded with one's life.

Zenos is suffering from a lack of joy and pleasure in his life, seeing the world as meaningless and dull, and he has found only one sole pleasure in all of it: The Hunt*. But what he means by The Hunt, is that he wants to fight the most challenging foes, challenging enough that he must put his all into the battle and be pushed to the brink of death. Only this kind of challenging battle will give him any sense of joy at all. For him at this point, there has been nothing else which has brought him joy, so he seeks out this sole pleasure.

And THAT is what Zenos' motivation is. He is not mindless in his pursuit of battle. His bloodlust stems from the desire to feel some kind of happiness at all, and unlike what some might think, not any foe will do. Zenos does not fight mindlessly against anyone at any time. That is not true. If an enemy is no threat to him, unless they purposely get in his way, he will not fight them.

This is true from the first time you see Zenos on the battlefield. At Rhalgr's Reach, Zenos sought out only the strongest fighters there, and two of them (Lyse and Y'shtola) got in his way first, and he defeated them easily. When he fights the WoL, the one who he has heard so much about, and definitely the strongest opponent among them, he becomes curious and hopes that we will give him what he wants. But in that first battle with him, he swats the WoL away like a fly, and they pose no challenge to him at all, to which he calls them "Pathetic", and then he immediately leaves, ultimately disappointed.

Note that Zenos had every opportunity to kill Lyse, Y’shtola, and the WoL if he wanted to, but he doesn’t. He leaves them alone after he defeats them. That’s not the sign of someone who is so sadistic that he’s only out for blood. The fact of the matter here is that Zenos is trying to feel something from battle, something that he has never experienced before: pure joy.

Zenos doesn’t experience this joy until he fights the WoL again several times; first he gets just a hint of it, a tiny spark, when the WoL breaks a piece of his helmet off, and he feels it even more later on when Zenos fights the WoL in the Ala Mhigan throne room. This is when Zenos goes into his monologue before he releases and takes over Shinryu, and note that the joy and pleasure he is describing seems to have a sexual tone to it, which I promise I have a point to make about that in a bit.

After the battle with Zenos as Shinryu, he finally feels the joy that he has never felt in his entire life, and because he doesn’t think he’ll ever feel anything like it ever again, Zenos takes his own life, happy to have played a bit part in the story of his “first friend”.

But as we know, Zenos doesn’t stay dead. He finds himself alive once more, and he has a singular goal: to feel that pure bliss, that overwhelming joy that he felt when he fought the WoL in the Royal Menagerie in Ala Mhigo. From ShB through EW, Zenos’ goal doesn’t change, but he does change in his understanding of what it means to have a “friend” and how he can feel happiness.

During EW, Zenos has several scenes where his understanding of his feelings seems to grow, and though that sexual tone to his descriptions of what he’s feeling towards his battle with the WoL is still there, I would argue that over time, it seems to have more and more of a romantic tone to it as well. And with this shift in his tone when describing his feelings, he also seems to question his understanding of it all.

Zenos’ character growth is the whole point of two very important scenes: the Scions and Jullus encountering Zenos in Garlemald while fighting the blasphemies, and later when Zenos goes to the Royal Menagerie alone. The first of these scenes reinforces the themes of EW with Zenos’ philosophy of life, but it is also the first time that someone says something that makes Zenos question his beliefs.

Alisaie’s words to Zenos hit him hard, and Zenos goes back to the Royal Menagerie, to the scene of where he had his one transcendent moment, his one time in his life when he felt joy, pleasure, and happiness. He realizes in this moment that, whatever you believe Zenos’ true feelings are for the WoL, which I personally argue that it is love that he feels for them, but regardless, Zenos cannot continue to be selfish and only think about his own wants and desires. He must act selflessly, and assist in the WoL’s battle against the Endsinger and stop the Final Days, in order for the WoL to give him what he wants in return. He finally realizes that it’s this give and take, this reciprocation between people, is the key to building bonds with others… Zenos finally learns what it is to be a “friend” to someone. After this moment, Zenos goes to Sharlayan to find a way to help out the WoL in their mission to save the star, and to finally be a friend to them.

And you know what that is? That’s growth. That’s having a character arc. That’s Zenos in all of his complexity. Which I still say that it’s perfectly fine to not like his character, but I only wish that people would not like him with a clear understanding of what he really is, and not what others think he is.

Lil rant abt Caine

Caine is just a lil guy, despite it all. From a design standpoint I thought I was gonna absolutely fucking hate looking at him because those chattering teeth toys make my skin crawl- but the art direction really helps make him look more appealing and whimsical than a disembodied pair of talking dentures sounds on paper.

The thing with Caine is I didn't initially like him that much after the pilot. While his interactions with Bubble were quite funny, that one episode left me feeling like he'd just end up being kinda one note or at the very least one note in a way that'd get on my nerves. Then everything changed when Pomni Wake Up Time to Go On an Adventure! attacked

The comedic timing throughout that announcement video was so fucking funny and thanks to his line deliveries and animation/model [?] upgrades- CAINE LOOKED AND SOUNDED SO ADORABLE!!

Legit it wasn't until this came out that I realized I actually could be on board with Caine as a character and it's been uphill from there. Episode 2 was better than the pilot not only comedically and visually but also in terms of showcasing just how actually unsettling Caine can be as an antagonist. Not because he's vengeful or malicious, but because he's so oblivious to how people work. His mind's always buzzing with terrible ideas and he's so so eager about these adventures, but at the end of the day he really really doesn't get the circus crew. Try as he might to include them, keep them engaged [ZOOBLE WAIT!], or even give them what they want [Exit doors] he doesn't realize how traumatic and distressing their current situation can be. The very nature of being trapped in a digital world is bad enough but it's especially rough here bc not only does its god have limited capabilities, you also are very well acquainted with him, and he can't fully understand your pain nor can he truly save you from it. He won't mourn your abstraction. He will not attend your funeral. He will not understand the distress of your arrival, nor the weight of your departure.

This isn't just sad from the pov of the circus gang, it's also very sad for Caine- not because i think he'll ever feel sad about it himself necessarily, but instead because the situation is sad. New members appear over and over, you craft adventures and games and distractions like [i'm assuming] they'd asked you to, but over and over, one by one, they abstract. They stop laughing at your jokes. They don't like you. They want you to leave them alone. It's confusing and maybe even inconvenient.

Where I'm hoping the series takes Caine is that this dissonance between Caine's intentions and the distress of the circus gang gets worse and worse and worse until something's got to give. I'm hoping that maybe at some point a character will try to sit down and talk with him and for it to either sorta get through to him but completely backfire in some form because he misinterprets what the others want from him OR i'd also be down for him to listen, but not understand any of it and proceed as tho nothing happened. I don't want Caine to come around really, it'd be interesting to see how Goose would go about having him come around to being a better host that empathizes more with humans, but personally I do prefer him to keep on keepin' on being this oblivious and eager antagonist.

My favorite Caine lines/line deliveries so far:

"You, my friend, stumbled into an incredible world of wonders, where anything can happen!…e-except for swearing."

"And here we have THE GROUNDS! Drown yourself in the digital lake, or engage in ridery at the digital carnival!"

"What do you think of XDDCC? You're right, terrible, LET'S TRY THAT AGAIN!"

"Kaufmo abstracted? Why didn't anybody tell me?"

"Bubble you can't say that"

"-ZOOBLE WAIT!"

"Why are you all just standing there?! The- The Canyon- C-Candy Canyon Kingdom needs you now!" [according to his VA, this was an actual line flub but hoo boy am i glad they use it bc it's hilarious]

"I know you guys love your NPCs, but if I start losing track of who's a human and who's an NPC, who knows...what. could. happen..."

That last line there specifically surprised me the most because up until he said that I was under the impression Caine was linked to every single NPC. I even thought he could see through their eyes if he so chose thanks to his "hundreds of all seeing eyes" line in the pilot. Him saying this here implies lots of things. Has Caine forgotten before? Is someone in the circus secretly an NPC ooooooooh~

"Who knows what could happen..."

Honestly, when Caine first said this I did immediately theorize Jax as being an NPC but now that it's been *checks calendar* three months since I watched episode 2, I don't think this is the case anymore. Jax being an NPC would be...something. Jax not knowing he's an NPC would be interesting [i like it when ppl's realities get shattered], but honestly I think this line was a way to telegraph to the audience that no Caine isn't actually all knowing. He didn't know Gummigoo was coming through that portal until he saw him with his own two eyes. My theory is that Caine is only able to teleport, create, censor, transform, and destroy the world around him, but isn't able to see all of it at once unless he tries to. I think Caine's default state is one where he only knows what he sees directly in front of him/what he himself has left waiting for someone else. And rather than implying someone in the gang is an NPC, I think that line in episode 2 was mainly implying Caine can be tricked, that it's possible to hide something from him, to surprise him even. Though I'm not opposed to an NPC we haven't met trying to join under the guise of being human, it'd potentially create some fun tension assuming the audience was given enough reason to care about them.

Jax is actually my favorite character in tadc, but i couldn't fill an entire post with things to say abt him. Caine seems to be- at least as of right now- the easiest of all the characters to try and wrap my head around. I'll probably have a lot more to say about Jax as he exists in canon as the episodes come out [EPISODE 6 MY BELOVED]

Had a dream today and I'm evolving it as I go here

The main idea that Rin didn't die when she tried to unalive herself by Kakashi's hand, but Obito was already traumatized and got in with Madara's Moon Eye plan. So yada-yada, she's the jinchuriki of Sanbi. BUT the difference was that she decided to come out of the closet (a real tight one cuz of her clan but she almost just DIED what to regret now) that she's actually a guy. So FTM Rin guys. Rin is he/him from now on.

He wouldn't change his personality and crush on Kakashi much. Dude is a medic, have you met medics? My extended family has a lot of medics in ER and other and let me tell you, they're ruthless and give 0 fucks.

Oh and since he's a medic he has top notch access to remove his own boobs and change his hormones fucking manually.

I think he would rethink his crush on Kakashi, like, man, he's a loser, plus it's hard to crush on someone who you thought killed you (even tho you made him) AND Kakashi has doomed love with 'dead' Obito and it's a bummer.

Idk about his name tho, he probably would change it just to, unknowingly, create more confusion for poor Obito, who is SURE that Rin is dead-dead and fucking Konoha didn't even made a grave for her and Kakashi doesn't even VISIT.

Madara and Zetsu obviously don't tell him about his development. They don't need him to have a hope in this world again.

Kakashi is just glad that he didn't kill his teammate and maybe they connect better since "Rin" (listen i NEED a name for him, but i have 0 ideas about meaning or what ever. maybe he'd take something to honor Obito's memory?) doesn't crush on him anymore and maybe he's trans too?? idk about it yet but he might act warmer to "Rin" now.

So Obito is just confused, like WHO is this dude from Nohara clan who is now with Kakashi ALL the time (they're still best friends). He doesn't connect that this brown haired (!) medic (!!) from Nohara clan (!!!) with the same marks (!!!) same age as them (!!!!!) might be Rin. like no, nope, Rin a nice gentle lady, not this smoking dude who yells at Kakashi and curses at him cuz he run away from hospital again.

So yeah Obito is just not impressed. But intrigued. And jealous. He stalks Kakashi AND this guy all the time. May develop a crush on both, cuz "Rin" is still the same at his core.

Kakashi would still go in ANBU cuz Minato asked him (still not sure about it, like yeah lets put deeply traumatized 13 yo in assasin squad good job) and stuff.

So idk how canon would go from there, like i doubt that Minato would let 14 yo jinchuriki near another one at this tense situation, even tho "Rin" could've help.

So yeah Kushiha and Minato die, "Rin" barely holds onto the Sanbi but Obito finds out that the guy is holding them. He doesn't connects the dots. Or he does? His mind just CAN'T hold on to the fact that his Rin MIGHT survived.

But maybe "Rin" was closer to the place where they sealed Kuubi in Naruto (maybe he ran there cuz there's Kuubi rampaging and he HAS to help) so Minato entrusted Naruto to him, not to fucking Sandaime.

So yeah, now "Rin" is Naruto's legal dad at the age of 14 and no one can fucking take him away cuz a) it was Minato's dying wish; and b) just fucking TRY to peer "Rin" away from Naruto, you'll get your hand bitten off and NO arguments work, cuz "Rin", who was trained by Kushina in jinchuriki stuff, can make some sort of turtle shield and he hides in it with his new baby and no one can do anything.

And no one can protect baby jinchuriki better than the other jinchuriki so it's fine. Everyone just accepts it.

Naruto is bullied less but I think no one can tell him about his parents cuz Sandaime sucks ass. But "Rin" drops HUGE hints cuz he hates Sandaime now too. Like no shit Tsunade left.

Idk what would happen with Obito if he finds out about "Rin's" identity. he'd come back crawling and crying probably. Maybe try to kidnap him and cry more in Kamui.

So, let's take canon Danny Phantom. We can even take the AGIT, that would only make him canonically 16-17is for this scenario. (Btw, poor Val. I'm seriously so sorry for her)

Danny is flying around the Infinite Realms to familiarise himself with it better. Look, if he decided to be the Bridge, he has to learn more about the Ghost side of his life. Their customs, quirks, limits, world... from someone who isn't a Fruitloop or his parents. He is still ashamed that it took meeting Dairy King to finally realise that not all Ghosts are evil.

He got to a section of many, many, MANY, natural portals that led into completely different universes. Most of them even had Heroes!!!! He was so exited!

He visited many in the next few months. Made friends, confused the heck out of locals. Made some enemies, cause that's just his life.

Spiderman was cool! Iron Man was so fun to prank, the guy was a billionaire and hilarious.

Even if he never was able to speak with the vast majority, those Japanese Heroes with cool superpowers were awesome. He was kinda glad his world was normal-is tho. Call him judgmental, but come on, look him in the eyes and tell him that you wouldn't be weirded out by some of the mutations.

And now, he spotted his new target. From what he gathered, they were an urban legend of the gloomy as heck city. Robins,... bats? or something. Time to make friends!

And close the leakage of the Raw, unfiltered ectoplasm into here. He had only been around one for an hour and he saw how problematic it was.
