I miss the feeling I had when I first joined this fandom, I knew virtually nothing so everything was correct and I loved everything, even if that stuff just isn’t true, i was like

Bruce is a bit emotionally constipated but loves his kids? Hell yeah sounds legit

dick is a silly happy flippy man who is a bit promiscuous? Love that for him

Jason is a mega feminist literature nerd who is also buff and takes care of the street kids? Perfect man honest

Tim is a nerd who never sleeps and is queer and has never known the touch of a man nor woman? Sweet

Steph is waffle obsessed goofball? Well I prefer pancakes but right on

Cass is a mute badass who loves her fam? I love her

Duke is a normal dude? Well someone has to be and he seems neat

Alfred can do no wrong? Aight, I love old perfect tea men

Damian is a little prick? So are all middle schoolers give him time

But then I had to go learn about the characters and now I have complex opinions about them, and can see the inherent racism and sexism in how they are portrayed

You know before I joined the bat fandom I did not use the exclude tag in ao3? Like tmnt and dp have some bad stuff but usually I could just scroll past.

Mm. I do find it a little exhausting trying to navigate the lines of what's canon, what shouldn't be canon (but is due to racism/sexism/homophobia/etc.), and just having fun.

I'm also trying to cultivate the mindset of what I've seen on Tumblr about not policing other people's ships/ideas. I am highly uncomfortable with some (particularly underaged people and adults dating), but I'm also not leaving hate comments. Like you said, the backspace exists for a reason.

Idk. There's a toooon of takes/ideas about the batfam that are inherently false, but as long as they aren't racist/sexist/etc takes, I don't see the harm in them. So what if someone wants a coffee obsessed Tim? So what if Jason's kill code is very strict? As long as they don't claim it's canon, let them be

But yeah. I have a mile long exclude list for fics on AO3. I used to use it only for triggers (I can not do stockhold syndrome, my lords), but now it's got other weird ass shit I've stumbled upon (I saw a fic where the batkids were spanked as punishment??? Like I said, not gonna leave hate comments or single anyone out. Just not my cup of tea).

I also am usually not a fan of romance/sex. It's why the batfam intrigued me so much (found families usually don't have that in it). I like exploring dynamics outside of romance and thus love the batfam. They've got so much going on that romance/sex is not needed. They are such a mess without that dynamic being added (talking about the Bats getting with a third party, but, again, trying not to yuck anyone's yum).

However, I agree. There's a ton of misinformation within fandom. I like how complex canon gets with the characters, but there's also widely different takes with them (mostly talking about Bruce here. He can either be trying or just a straight up horrible dad).

What’s wrong with the way marcille treats falin?? Not trying to start anything, I’m genuinely curious

Mainly that she treats Falin like she can't look out for herself and is possessive- it's at its worst before the events of the series, but it never fully goes away. And it makes total sense for like All of Marcille as a character, and generally tracks with how people treat Falin in general! It also doesn't exclude them from having a healthy relationship, it's just something they'd have to be careful about. And, even though Marcille is Laios' friend, she still treats him AND Falin unfairly because of this!

I don't have a problem with that in the series, because I think it's making a point there, but the fact that it gets glossed over in favor of Marcille Useless Lesbian by the fans REALLY rubs me the wrong way- because it's not only flattening Marcille as a character and their dynamic, it's also participating in treating Falin similarly. And people treating Laios as a threat and Falin as soooo pure and innocent is a Huge thing in the series, and, as an autistic person myself, it *really* gets to me that people are just passively accepting that as *normal.*

Overall its on the subtext side, and my experiences likely make me more primed to spot stuff like that in general, so it's not like anybody is Stupid for not picking up on it. I just really really get annoyed by it being ignored by the fandom as a whole in favor of The Newest Ship

Oh my god your Rollo art gives me life! I gotta ask - who do you ship him with? As a Rollo fan I like to pair him with Deuce, Jack, Neige and Idia, even though I’m probably the only person on earth who likes any of those pairings. Do you have any Rollo rarepairs? Rollo deserves all the love, Anon! Whenever I think about him, I start lamenting about wanting more of him. Too bad he was with us just for one event... I would love to see him interact with the other group of boys :( I think Lilia and the tweels would enjoy him the most: Lilia would think he is obnoxiously righteous but also very fun to tease, the tweels would get a similar feeling to what they feel from Riddle. Floyd could be such a menace with Rollo, and Jade isn’t any better.

Anyways, to answer your question! We don’t like any popular ships for Rollo, but we love him with fukukaicho/vice-president of NBC (the boy is a huge simp lol); and out of the main cast the only ship that kind of “sparked” with us was Azul/Rollo. Rook/Rollo also would’ve been interesting!

Oh, and of course the gargoyles. Gargoyles/Rollo is the best ship.

Oof it’s hard to say, Anon! I feel like I answered a similar question before, but I really don’t remember what I said.

I love the friendship aspect of a lot of characters that we ship romantically (like Idia and Azul, for example).

But excluding those, I’d say Deuce and Epel are cute, Vil and Idia (even though neither of them would probably call it friendship) and the Octa-trio and Ortho (it’s basically just bad influence on this already bad kid lol)

It’s a bit weird to call whatever the Octa-trio have a friendship, but I love their dynamic a lot, so it would be unfair not to mention them. I would watch an entire sitcom of just these three and their antics.

It’s a bit difficult to say because while we are multishippers and sometimes multiple ships coexist in a single story, we don’t necessarily have any poly ships, like nothing necessarily feels like an “organised” poly throuple. So I might not be the best person to answer this kind of question, ironically! But still:

The first years: not really likely, but Ace and Jack should do Deuce together (very not likely to happen due to both of them being stubborn and greedy). Also Epel and some of his senpais from Magift (not Leona though), because he is that eager to prove himself.

The second years: Jamil might find himself surrounded by mermen... in theory, they might invite Kalim as well, but they’re more likely to tease(scare) Jamil by saying that they are going to do that. Silver might find himself as a center of an orgy at some point too, but with a bunch of mob/faceless characters.

The third years: nothing really comes to mind, but there are people who want to involve Trey in their relationship or just for an orgy; Trey dodges it successfully so far.

RSA: nah, they’re too good for that :) Cuties. Too fucking good, not a single dirty bone in their body. Well, to be fair though, they have Che’nya, and he kickstart an orgy somehow. Everyone (especially those who participated and loved it) would be shocked afterwards.

Some things I’ve noticed over the course of a year and a half of self shipping with Heim:

Pros: he’s like the most controversial character in jjba so I usually don’t have to worry about others self shipping with him (much). Hella cool art of him mostly comes from JP artists (and my very awesome friends who know that I am The Heim Enjoyer lol).

Cons: BECAUSE he is a controversial character barely anyone makes merch of him (even official Jojo merchandise he’s completely cut from a lot of it) and custom merch from like Etsy is also hard because people are usually not willing to make anything for him. I get called names and other nasty things for drawing him or- literally showing any kind of attraction to him. He is excluded from a lot of fan stuff as well. Little to no doujins of him and the ones I have found are shipped across Japan only (thankfully I do have one but that’s it)

Sometimes I do envy those who have F/O’s that are popular and more well accepted in fandoms since they get more like.. recognition. (I do have F/O’s like that but they’re not my main focus currently). But nothing will ever discourage me or stop me from loving Heim. I am happy with the merch I do have of him and I’m very grateful for what I have. But anyhow, those are things that I’ve noticed, some of them straight away lol.

But I guess it’s also a huge motivation of mine, like not only do I love Heim for who he is but I also just wanna take care of him cause no one else was lol. I took him home like taking an abandoned puppy from off of the street. He is my Pubby after all ( ´ ▽ ` ) 💖

Some thoughts about Dabihawks and the “Enemies to Lovers” trope (someway through this turned into a character study).

OK, so this is a very weird thing for me to post, especially since I normally don’t post at all (and for the few people that actually follow me and may see this, I just reblog art and photographs for the most part so this may be even weirder). But anyway, I want to dump this here. I don’t know if this makes much sense or has much of a basis. And I’m far from a shipping expert. Warning in advance.

Normally, I do not ship. At all. I support canon pairings if there and I can tolerate ships for the most part. I am one of those people who get annoyed if everyone is gay in a work because my mind goes to “what would be the odds in real life” - I don’t mean many offense, but my environment made me only encounter homosexuality in fiction so I doubt my experience with LGBTQA people is universal, but to me it’s a rarity.

And a type of ship that particularly annoys me is “enemies to lovers”. I just couldn’t see it. At all. I hated the very concept of those ships and they were among the first things I would filter out when searching through the Archive. “Don’t like, don’t read” as they say and I sure as hell didn’t read.

This probably has a lot to do with me being a bit of a stickler for canon or canon details in many case, but to each their own.

Enter Dabihawks.

Funny thing, I don’t have a 100% clear memory of how I ran into this pairing because make no mistake, I’m VERY new in My Hero Academia. As in, barely a few months new. So I’m pretty sure I ran into Dabihawks when I was looking for porn and was mostly unfamiliar with the characters.

Yeah, that’s another thing I should mention. I don’t normally read porn fics featuring characters I’m familiar with. Mostly for the stated above reasons.

But Dabihawks? That’s different.

MHA is the first fandom in which I can actually say that I ship non-canon pairings. That “yeah I can absolutely see that”.  And Dabihawks is the chief of them for reasons I don’t really get.

It should be everything I hate in a ship. My issue with the enemies to lovers thing is that very often those people don’t have a reason to become lovers, at least not the way I see it. I’m excluding AUs and stuff like that because your story, your playground, but Dabi and Hawks do not have an actual reason to get emotionally close to each other. It’s lies and zero trust and openly murderous intentions from both sides, and Dabi is a goddamn maniac (no I’m not using the medical definition of the term).

But this at the same time is what this makes this pairing work.

Dabi and Hawks feel fundamentally like very similar - or rather, parallel - people.

Normally, when taking an enemies to lovers dynamic, there are two main approaches that I see.

1) one of them is the victim of circumstance and the other person comes as some sort of saviour

This is a ship dynamic that I can see working, it has some tragic elements that work well for drama, puts both characters on a good and decent moral ground, and if written correctly can promote growth for them. When this becomes problematic is when this dynamic is shifted to “I can fix them”. When I’m not given sufficient reason to believe that “villain” person can become better.

Enter the second approach

2) Stockholm Syndrome - EDIT: I was told I was using the term wrong. They were right so I'm rephrasing it to "unhealthy attachment"

Excuse me if I wrote “Stockholm” wrong. Regarding the subject of “I can fix them”, I know just enough about relationships to know that this is a toxic mindset in real life. Many times the characters in these series get obsessed with the “villain” of the pairing, and likewise the villain becomes obsessed with the hero. However, in this case, instead of having a dynamic of “I want to offer a chance to help because I care about this person” and “I want to become better and I’m grateful to this person for giving me the chance to do so”, we instead have both characters adopting a far more toxic mindset. The hero feels less like “someone in love” and more like “someone with a guilt and/or superiority complex”. Likewise, the villain still acts with villainous intent. They want to lure the hero in. So in these pairings, the hero and the villain - the two sides of the enemies - do not share a common ground other than the battlefield.

And then there is OOC.

The thing about enemies to lovers pairings, particularly the seond type, is that one character needs to be the victim of the other character, or act wildly out-of-character for this to even happen. That’s why I oftenly associate enemies to lovers with manipulation to a certain degree.

Now, I admit my pool is... limited. My main encounters with such ships are all those “Harry Potter x Voldy/Draco/death eater here”, as well as some miscellaneous stuff like “Hibari Kyoya x Mukuro” or “Dark Marik x literally anyone” or “Aizen x Ichigo (wtf)”. Either the Draco in Leather Pants syndrom is in full strength, or this is going on.

So why do I find Dabihawks different?

Well, they’re both  in the same shoes, and they’re both the victim, and they’re both the manipulator.

Dabi and Hawks have an extremely personal, pre-established connection long before they even meet, said connection being Endeavor. And it’s not really in terms “I want to overcome this guy” but rather “this guy irrevocably changed my life and is connected to my family”.

There are far better analysis essays here on this, but Dabi and Hawks are defined by two very different versions of the same person. Dabi knows Endeavor as the monster who pretends to be a hero and never loved him as a parent, while to Hawks Endeavor is the proof that there is good in this world and saved him from his parent. Endeavor is the physical manifestation of how they perceive the world they live in. Dabi sees the worst of the hero society because he grew up in it, while Hawks has completely fallen for the glamorous image. For Dabi, the existence of pro-heroes among people is not a spectacle but an inescapable part of life; literally, he lived in the same house as one. Meanwhile, for Hawks it was such a spectacle that he did not believe it to be real. So they both start from the same point - Endeavor - and reach completely different conclusions. One of them thinks the world is fake, while the other thinks that miracles happen.

Another thing they both are parallels/mirrors/foils to each other is how exactly the abuse was for each of them. I’m trying to put this in terms of invisibility and expectation.

A core question in both their childhoods is “why was I born”. We see both of them being faced with this question as early as their toddler years. Both of them are undeniably too young to get existential like that. Here is the difference though; Dabi was clearly told exactly why he was born by his father, while Hawks’ own mother posed this question to him. So here again we have two different paths from the same starting point. Dabi already knew the answer but it was ripped away from him, while Hawks was asked to find the answer until it was shoved into his hands.

I’ll talk more about that later.

So, invisiblitity? Dabi and Hawks were invisible in their own house in different ways. At first, Dabi had ALL the attention on him but then it was ripped away along with the answer to the question “why I was born”. This caused instability in his life, like somone tore off his foundations. Dabi desires this stability back; he technically already knows the answer to the “why I was born” thing, so he believes that with thee attention he will get it back. He always, ALWAYS screams at people to look at him.

Hawks on the other hand thinks that being invisible is a good thing. Hawks knew he was unwanted from the very beginning, and since he could not leave, the best thing he could do was pretend he’s not there. Hawks doesn’t want to be seen. So he’s quite, inexpressive, and diverts attention away from him. Hawks wants the answer to the question “why I was born”, but he knows all too well that his parents won’t provide it, so he doesn’t seek them out.

And that is when they both are thrown into the exact opposite situation of their comfort zone.

Dabi is shoved - metaphorically - intoa world where everything is defined by secrecy. Limelight villainy - aka the villains who attack people in broad daylight - are in danger because they attract attention, and now Dabi is a villain who works in secret, even though his nature is to want ALL the spotlights on him.

Meanwhile, Hawks is thrown in the world where all the limelight will be on him, while he’s most confortable just disappearing.

Here we come back to Endeavor. With the Hero Comision, Hawks is shoven the answer of “why were you born” into his hands. Now, I’m not saying Endeavor has ties with the Hero Commision. Unlike what fanfiction claims, I really don’t think Endeavor wants much to do with them. But the important bit here is how Hawks preceives it. Hawks already thinks that heroes are fantastical guardian angels, and tols that he WILL be a hero.

So Dabi starts out with all the expectations and attention piled on him, only for them to be taken away and for him to be thrown in the shadows. While Hawks starts with nobody having any expectations or paying attention to him, and then he gets shoved to the spotlight.

And how do they react to the situation? Well, with the exact same way; putting on completely opposite but based on the truth masks. Dabi pretends not to be the massive attention seeker that he is and instead feigns apathy; except this apathy is only partially feigned because he only cares about one thing - it’s just not villainy itself, it’s a person. Hawks on the other hand pretends to be far more happy-go-lucky and friendly than he actually is, but that’s also partially based on a truth; he is optimistic to a fault (his words).

And this is a very simplified version of what makes this pairing work. When they collide, they collide HARD in every single area. Because every single area is a common area. Their lives match each other’s step for step long before they actually meet, so they have a lot of common ground, and the line in the sand between heroes and villains is not straight. It’s jagged as hell because they both got dragged through it.

So when they do finally meet, their oposite beats more or less forces the other to remove the mask. We see Hawks getting angry and laser focused and emotionless, killing someone in a location where no one could see. We see Dabi danceing around like a drama queen and laughing at the camera in front of the whole world. In a sense, tey are finally back in their comfort zones. And they had to collide to do it.

Dabi doesn’t want to be saved by the hero, and Hawks doesn’t want to save the villain. They do NOT trust each other, but know each other better than anyone else, because their lives are so close.

And I think their fight in canon perfectly reflects that. In a darkned, enclosed location like the ones they grew up in, with Hawks trying to keep something a secret while Dabi demanding that all eyes are on him.

And this is why I believe it works as a pairing. Yeah, there is a lot of symbolism and popular ship dynamics you could throw here (icarus and the sun, blonde and brunette except that’s a lie, sunny boy vs emo dude) but no. It’s how they force each other to be REAL and to look at the other side of their path that makes this ship work.

I read a fair bit of Dabihawks fanfiction, and it rarely starts with love at first sight or “I love this person”. Of course it fucking doesn’t. It starts with them actually considering murder, and then getting uncomfortable because the other person is getting under their skin. By taking a look at each other, they are forced to take a look at themselves. Because they have the exact same kind of baggage.

It’s also one of the reasons I think that this ship has so much variety in it. I read plenty of Dabihawks porn. A thing I find in slash fiction is that in a popular pairing, there is almost always a designated top and a designated bottom with designated preferences. Who will be the Uke and who will be the Seme of the relationship. I can’t believe I just wrote that. There is this general concept of what they’re into. But with Dabihawks, there isn’t such a pre-established concept because both sides of the pairing can fit any role. You can have anything from service dom Dabi to pillow princess Hawks to both of them being soft, or both being sadomaschohists, to switches, and who tops or bottoms in fiction is up to a coin toss. And it always feels in character because they both have this...zigzagging yet parallel dynamic, of having same yet different starting points, and moving at the same axis, taking turns at the same points.

So yeah. Not sure how to finish this but... yeah. Here is why I think this pairing works. Thanks for reading, if you did.

One thing I realised that while jonsa was not considered canon couple by book fans it was taken seriously when S6 is out. I mean the reviewers or some neutral fans were shock to see jonsa chemistry and it's possibility. The show boost up Jonsa popularity and hence book Jonsa started making sense. Also I know there are people who don't find Jonsa having romantic undertones in show or books. But they can find non existent romance in pedoships so it really doesn't matter.

I talked about how book Jonsa predated s6 here, but I agree that the show gave it a massive boost in popularity. I have to say though, whether you thought show Jonsa would be canon or viewed it as a crack ship, no matter if you can’t with show Jonsa and only like it for the book characters, whatever version of Jonsa you are, never let anyone in the fandom at large make you feel bad.

The same people who spout off about Jonsas are the ones who denied Dark Dany. They were walked through the foreshadowing in the show (with book collaboration) by Dark Dany stans prior to s8 and in retaliation to spec they didn’t like they called Jonsas misogynistic, slavery defenders, claimed the theory was only about shipping, they sent rape and death threats, and then when it happened, when Dany burned KL, they argued that it was a last minute development by D&D, that there was no foreshadowing. The problem isn’t that they didn’t agree (we were all wrong about the ending in one way or another), but they maligned Jonsas, excluded them from the fandom, lied about the motivation behind and arguments for Dark Dany, and they still do it. You just can’t take such dishonest people seriously. And you definitely can’t take what they say about what is or isn’t foreshadowing to heart.

Like you, I feel that it further disqualifies naysayers when I see the same people who mock Jonsa earnestly argue that Martin wants us to read a grown man attempting to rape Sansa as somehow part of her grand romance. Never harass people, but do feel free to ignore their criticism of us/our ship/our theories!

And, I’ll say again, I’ve never minded people who didn’t read the show jonsa dynamic as romantic because I didn’t think s6 had to be romantic. It was intense, and they were more emotionally vulnerable than I’d ever seen them before, but I didn’t think it had to be interpreted in a certain way. I believed in Jonsa being canon because I thought Jon would have to choose between love (Sansa) and duty (Dany), and then, what do you know, that is the story we got in the finale. D&D kinda/sorta wanted to have it both ways and reversed the expression —duty is the death of love— but we all knew the truth, the scripts confirmed later that it was love for the Starks that won out, so I think there was a lot of last minute funny stuff trying to soften Dany’s ending further for fans, possibly at the behest of HBO who wanted their spin-offs. It was way too tidy and works too well with lots of stuff from the books for me to think that D&D came up with that callback. So post s8 I became more convinced than ever that book Jonsa would be romantic. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, I agree that the show brought a lot of people to the Jonsa fandom (many of the active Jonsas were show watchers first), and I think the characters being aged up in GoT helped as well. Book Sansa is very young which makes a lot of us uncomfortable. As for romantic chemistry, book Jonsa hasn’t interacted on page yet so there isn’t anything to speak of there, but Jon’s “Sansa…singing to herself” and Sansa’s “oh, it would be so sweet” lines make it easy to think Martin will enjoy writing their dynamic. The few moments they do think of each other are so evocative, having them actually interact has all sorts of potential!

HO BOY the rare "It didn't spawn on discord first" given how much for that fandom does. This is also going under a cut given the rating.

So apparently in very late July last year (?!) I woke up with these words still rattling in my brain as you do.

One of those stupid things you end up doing sometimes involves @writer-rider-flirty-thirties and me trying to have at least one (1) piece of writing in some form for every two person ship. This is based on spreadsheet data I made and excludes the adults purely because even just the kids takes FOREVER to collate. We've flipped a lot, I keep putting aged up monsterfucker stuff out there you know how it is. It gets the world more than just endless lovesquare it should be considered an important community service. Because of that, Bre went and picked three people and I started wrangling those original lines as a whole ass oneshot.

I've got to be in the right mood to write the thing because of the rating, otherwise took me a bit of figuring out the dynamics for the ship to work within those weird brain leftovers.

So whole thing has ended up like a hotel? Place of business?? Where clients can pay big money for entertainment behind closed doors and not one word of it will escape. Privacy is everything even if you want something as mundane as a clown party you'd dreamed of as a kid. Break the rules such as touching any the staff without express permission though? Get blacklisted from the establishment in all forms and fined. They do not fuck around.

One of the characters in here is Trans and also got caught up in a splicer fad rich people had going for a while until the law caught up and banned it. Finding employment when you have insect wings and weird eyes is pretty difficult so that white whale of good boss that will protect your ass is like gold dust.

This oneshot isn't one of the more innocent jobs though that wake up line was VERY clear about that and wanted to keep to the spirit of it. They're in their early/mid 20s in this so what do I care. With this fandom unlike ToA I have zero attachment to the characters in canon so I just kinda grab them, change the ages, actually give them personalities that are stuck to, put them in situations and off we gooo.

I’ve not touched this blog in ages, I’m mostly hoping this will end up being seen because of the tags. But I have some 9-1-1 feelings I need to get off my chest and this is the best place for it.

Bi Buck??? Amazing and fantastic. A storyline that is at the end of the day about Buck realising this big part of himself and coming to accept it and being comfortable with it. It’s not about Eddie, and it’s not about Tommy. We have bisexual representation which is so rare for big tv shows still with everyone being gay or a lesbian if that representation even exists on that show. This is important. This is bigger than a silly ship war.

But while I’m here! Buddie vs Kinkley (my preferred ship name for them lol). Who cares? Buck and Eddie have this wonderful love story and it would be amazing if they went canon. Buck is going on a date with Tommy amidst this new discovery and that’s also incredible? We get to see him actually on screen on a date. How fun!

It’s super frustrating to see people on twitter (and here but mostly twitter) getting annoyed that people ship Buck and Tommy and they have fanfiction written about them (literally saw someone mad about them taking over the buddie tag on ao3 which is untrue and also just exclude their tag if it’s that big of a deal? That’s an amazing function you can use). But people can ship what they want, they can enjoy whatever they want. As someone else has pointed out this fandom is one of the very fandoms that is so weird about people only being shipped with one other person. Most fandoms be out here multishipping on the regular.

Some people also have never shipped buck and Eddie. And those people are enjoying buck and Tommy and we’re all allowed to. I want to be able to enjoy this ship without being accused of being “disgusting” for shipping something that has actual onscreen romantic time?? So yeah I’m on tumblr and tiktok where people aren’t making every single thing about buddie.

People are getting cruel about it too, picking on both Eddie and Tommy’s characters over the stupidest stuff that the characters themselves are clearly over. They’re all friends, they’re all connected. Chimney wouldn’t have rang Tommy (even in season 2!) if they weren’t friends, Hen wouldn’t of come when Tommy contacted her if they weren’t friends. Eddie and Buck wouldn’t be close the way they are if Buck was still upset about a comment made in the heat of the moment over something they ended up having a conversation about! Like be nicer.

“Oh I can’t wait until Buck realises he’s in love with Eddie next episode” “oh who cares about buddie buck Tommy is where it’s at” can Buck just be bisexual without his sexuality being reliant on a ship becoming canon?

And to the people saying “you don’t care about Eddie” because we’re celebrating Buck being bi and not pushing a “Eddie is definitely gay” narrative at the same time that is actually insane. Yall are playing leap frog and you shouldn’t want an Eddie coming out story either just to make a ship canon. You should want it because it’ll make a fantastic narrative and it’ll fit a lot of what we’ve seen. And some of you do what it for that reason, but half the time those same people are complaining that Buck had this storyline first. Get over yourselves. Let people celebrate Buck. Let people celebrate bisexuality without making it about something else. Because shockingly enough that’s historically a massive problem and bi-erasure is gross af.

ok listen this has been on my mind for DAYS now so i’m going to shout it into the void and we’ll see what happens.

i have a note on my phone that says “exclude tags ao3” where i have written down every single tag i don’t want to see when i scroll through my favorite ship tags. this means that i don’t see what i deem gross on my feed, because every time i go scrollin’ i make the choice to curate my online experience.

the ONLY time i have ever reported a work on ao3, it was because there was a fic rated teen with tags that were clearly explicit. i didn’t want to read it, i didn’t want to leave a comment on content i wasn’t going to read, so i reported it for the sole purpose of the creator getting a little nudge so they could rate it appropriately.

the amount of posts i see about content being reported because it contains a squick of someone’s is BAFFLING to me. it’s insane that people feel the need to censor content that presumably wasn’t meant for you anyway. you cannot go online expecting the world of fandom bending over backwards to make sure that you’re safe, because guess what! the internet isn’t an inherently safe space! in order for it to be a safe space, you need to curate your own online experience, and if you’re not mature enough to do that, you should not be online. if you cannot see a piece of fiction or art or video edit without feeling squicked, grossed out, angry, or even triggered, then you have to ensure that you do not see it again. not reporting content that is “problematic” or inappropriate or offensive.

and on that note, fiction is allowed to be problematic. it’s fiction. it is not real. i have read fics containing infidelity, age gaps, murder, drug abuse, what have you, and it does not reflect on me as a person, or what i do during my time offline. i have written violent, disgusting fics; fics containing drug abuse, toxic, abusive relationships, but never in my life would i want to embody or experience what i write. i don’t want to bang a married, muscular silver fox as someone who’s much younger, but reading it? why the fuck not, it’s not about me.

i absolutely do not want to read underage stuff, or incest, or mpreg. it’s stuff that i personally think is disgusting and, to some degree, problematic (incest and underage, to be precise, i find very problematic—the rest is just personal preference). in order to avoid it, i filter those tags out. what one person thinks or feels about one certain topic should not affect other people wanting to read/write it.

the lack of nuance i see in younger people when it comes to fandom and content is frankly insane. they seem to draw such a large parallel between the fictional world and the real world, to the point where they’re incapable of seeing and understanding that the two are not one and the same. you can like a character who killed a bunch of people, write fics about it and explore who they are and why they are the way they are, without agreeing with their actions, beliefs, and values. (coincidentally, the same people who despise problematic content like graphic violence or non-con, will also take the murder character and make it into an uwu smol soft boy who just suffered trauma so its ok he’s doing this loki regulus barty crouch jr need i continue but we don’t have to unpack all of that right now)

sometimes it’s fun to be a problematic little rascal and that’s okay, because the outlet isn’t real. the fic isn’t real. it doesn’t reflect on any personal feelings, desires, beliefs, etc etc etc. the art isn’t real. if it feels too real to you, then????? don’t consume it??????? you can’t watch hannibal and then write to the show producers telling them that they’re horrible people because the show about cannibalism and murder contains just that, when you could’ve just stopped watching hannibal and done something else instead.

SHADOKA!!! i checked the ao3 tag the other day and after excluding fics with other ships there’s only 70 fics. and like while there are definitely fandoms with fewer fics and stuff, it’s still not a lot… like it kinda feels like it’s a ship just me and the mutuals know about. which is sad. because shadow and oka have so much potential. and they’re cute. and it gives both shadow and oka (who are also underrated as evidenced by how they are always missing from stuff) more attention. i hope to write more for them this summer :)

i have a lot of ideas for fics about my ultimate blorbo obi wan kenobi, but i really struggle with them. for one i find star wars a very intimidating fandom to write for, because it’s so big and there’s a lot of very precise things that you have to include (and people can be mean). but also i just CANNOT get obi wans voice right. like no matter how hard i try, he just seems out of character and i’m like. why. he’s my guy. why can’t i get it right.

hey I’ve never done submitted like this before so I hope I’m doing this right. Something happened recently and It’s been eating up at me for the past day and I can’t think and I genuinely need advice from the roleplay community. i can go by apple anon if it’s easier. This is long so sorry in advance

well, I run a roleplay server on discord that’s mostly come one, come all for a single fandom (1x1s, group rps, SFW or other etc). it’s been up and running for a long while now, and it’s gone pretty smoothly. Some hijacks but what server doesn’t? Well, yesterday a close friend (banana) of mine informed me that I accidentally hurt another friend’s (grapes) feelings and I didn’t mean to. I want to take responsibility and apologize but I’ve been advised to leave Grape alone until they come to me on their own. Which I understand.

For a little bit more context: me and my best friend (Cherry) run the server. Cherry and I have known eachother for years, never met in person but FaceTimed, mailed stuff. We’re pretty much siblings now. Cherry and I do a ton of roleplays together and we click together as roleplayers. Cherry and I recently have been roleplaying with someone we have clicked with also (Kiwi). So the three of us have been pretty much rping and hanging out a lot. We don’t know Kiwi that much - met a few months ago. this server is younger than we’ve known Kiwi.

The reason I mention Kiwi is that. Kiwi and I ship out two muses together in that server as “canon”. They’re like married. This is where Grape comes in. Grape’s muse is shippable within the fandom with both my and Kiwi’s character. I actually enjoy the ship and have shipped with Grape in the past. However, Grape enjoys another ship more than the one we were doing and started up another to prioritize. (Which is completely fine with me as these roleplays in the server can be separate and unrelated).

Well, a week? Ish ago, a huge in character groupchat was made for the muses in a specific fandom location, doubles welcome (doubles meaning people who play the same muse but different interpretation). Well, Kiwi and I have been looking to poly ship our muses, and a new person, Mango, has the same muse Grape did. I foolishly assumed Grape was too busy with the other ship, so I asked Mango to be involved instead.

And so I made the groupchat with me, Kiwi, Mango and another friend (Coconut) for this four poly.

And it was going great, we had fun. Some laughs.

Until the next morning, Grape told me they were leaving the server temporarily. I was confused but I respected their decision.

And then Banana told me that the groupchat I made seems to have opened some old wounds for people as a way of exclusivity and favoritism. And I was confused and honestly a little hurt because I was completely unaware of this. I didn’t mean to give off the feeling of clique. I have a roleplay with almost every active member in the server, some are more frequent some aren’t. I give people interactions because I know how it feels to be ignored and be excluded from chats. That’s why the server was made. In the general groupchats, I make sure people are replied to. But I guess because Grape’s muse wasn’t chosen, it hurt their feelings and now I feel paranoid that maybe it was favoritism? But I have not known Mango for all but a couple or weeks. Definitely less than Grape. I’ve roleplayed with Grape many times.

But in addition, Grape’s muse partner, Strawberry, was also hurt in addition to the creation of the groupchat also because their muse was overlooked when considering who would be in the poly. (Strawberry plays the same character as Coconut).

I didn’t choose these two only because I thought they would enjoy their own roleplay separately? But knowing it hurt them both has made me feel torn up so badly. Almost nauseous about it. It also seems the issue was that most of the planning was done in dms and not the server’s roleplay channels, which I do get.

I will admit, some roleplayers in the server I don’t click with roleplay wise but I NEVER ignore them in general. I try to make everyone feel welcomed.

I guess, this is all to ask: was I wrong for not choosing someone I’ve known longer? Was it really favoritism/excluding? I’ve been paranoid and scared to roleplay with Cherry, Kiwi and everyone in close with ever since Banana told me. How do I make things right? Banana told me not to go to Strawberry and Grape first, but I’m hurting because they hurt for so long. How do I avoid cliques/favoritism in big servers?
