Bird Symbolism on the Xianzhou

This all started with a question I asked my friend: "Well, have you ever seen a bird on the Xianzhou?"

Birds have played a major role in my very autistic investigations of Xianzhou lore. My intuition just knew that they were important so I started cataloguing every instance of birds appearing on the Xianzhou. I'll start with the more common appearances and then delve into the more obscure ones.

I would also like to preface this by saying I am not a bird scientist nor am I particularly interested in birds outside of the context of HSR. I simply noticed there were some repeating patterns and really wanted to make note of them.

So here's all the times I've seen a bird on the Xianzhou.

The Boring Ones

Sky-faring Commission/Starskiff Bird Symbol

This bird shows up all over the Xianzhou on buildings and signage. It is used on the signs indicating starskiffs but honestly can show up anywhere. Large associations with the sky-faring commission. Highly likely it is inspired by the white bird later in the post.

Jing Yuan's Finches

Another really obvious one as most people are familiar with his finches. As far as I know, they only appear in relation to Jing Yuan and don't seem to have any meaning outside of sheer vibes.

Before Dawn Lightcone:

"Do not make this decision lightly, general... Think about how you will be remembered in history..." The general of the Cloud Knights listens to his subordinates' words with eyes half-closed. "History will make its own judgment, but I have no interest in my legacy." "If I succeed, history will state that I am currently supremely confident in my masterful strategy." "But if I fail, then history will state that I am currently neglecting my duties in wanton pleasure, preferring finches over my people." A finch jumps down from his shoulder, and he extends his hand to catch the small creature. "I have simply made my own decision."

Yukong's Kestral

Similar to the bird that appears on Yanqing, Yukong's Kestral is a symbol that is connected to her beloved Caiyi.

Past and Future Lightcone:

The wings of the paper kite in her hands were broken, brutally reminding her of her beloved's tragic passing. She kneeled next to the fire of war, eyes full of sorrow. "If you are the only one left to do this, then our sacrifice would..." Gunfire raged on, painting the sky red without dampening its majesty. She looked up at the sky, eyes full of fury.

Edit: Qingque and Phoenix

These aren't related to anything as far as I can tell but there is also this bird that appears on Qingque's outfit.

There's also a phoenix that shows up in the Palace of Astrum and again in the Seven Arbiter Generals myriad. It may be something related to the history of the Xianzhou (the planet they came from in particular) because it appears on each of those panels outlining the backstory.

The Fun Ones

Yanqing's Swallow

Now starting to get into the territory of birds that are actually pretty interesting to the lore. The swallow is a bird that is literally everywhere on Yanqing. The painting is found near the Petrichor Inn. - this is significant because the Petrichor Inn has strong associations with the Vidyadhara. The also appear on the handle of his sword and in his splashart.

River Flows in Spring Lightcone:

The young boy took a short break from his sword practice. The sunlight was baking his already heated neck. He slowly got into the water, whose coldness touched his bare feet. When the bell chimes and birds tweet, even the people far away would know that springtime had arrived.

The Water Birds

Repeated appearance of birds made of water both in relation to Yanqing and found in cages in the Vidyadhara section of the Xianzhou. I believe these are some kind of spirit birds similar to the water creatures that swim through the Scalegorge Waterscape and Dan Heng's own azure dragon. These are probably similar to the Oceanids of Genshin Impact where they actually contain souls that take whatever shape they want in the water - probably the souls of dead Vidyadhara if I had to guess. Why are they being caged and sold around the Xianzhou in Vidyadhara areas? I have literally no idea at this point.

Yanqing has these ice swallows appear during his attacks. There's a recurring theme of swords containing souls in Xianxia stories which is also loosely connected to the concept of Blade's sword graveyard in the Hellscape. I think Yanqing's ice birds are somehow souls similar to the water birds caged around the Xianzhou.

The uber weird part about all of this is how at the end of Yanqing's ultimate you see this image. In the background of the image are the mountains associated strongly with the Vidyadhara and Dan Heng in particular.

I don't know what this means for Yanqing right now but he is an expy of a pre-existing character from Honkai Impact 3rd: Ma Yanqing. They probably have some plan for him that isn't immediately apparent right now but I would like to point out that his grandmaster, Jingliu, is also heavily associated with the mountain moon realm and can also summon a sword made of water/ice. This does not appear to be a technique known by anyone else and Jingliu herself needed to defeat the abomination in order to acquire her singular ice sword.

The Crane

Appearing initially only on Dan Feng's clothing, the crane has made a comeback in the new Cloud Knights Martial Doctrine, On Swords myriad trailer. They are significant because the also appear among the mountain realm and the moon. Notice the association Jingliu, Yanqing, and Dan Heng in particular.

The Black Bird

So not all the birds in this picture are distinctly black but their colour is ambiguous and they are similarly shaped so I'm lumping them together. They all appear in association with the mountain area - Blade's sword graveyard is also in the mountain area. The top right picture is from Dan Heng's first fansong.

The White Bird

Not sure what species of bird this is supposed to be but there's a white bird that appears repeatedly in association with the mountain realm. More specifically, it appears among the clouds and may freely travel from the Scalegorge to the Mountains through the hole in the clouds. Bottom left is from Blade's fansong. I think these birds may represent souls and the dead in the same way that Blade's spiderlilies and swords do.

There's also this bird above the realm-keeping commission that I'm unsure how to categorize because of it's unique shape but it's also among the mountains and moon.

Edit: Dan Shu's Bird

This one is actually important for the spirit bird concept. In the Longevous Disciple relic set she tells us of a story that inspires her:

According to the legend, a certain delvemaster saved her partner by placing their soul into a bird, granting them immortality. However, she eventually could not resist the call of the avian and also transformed into a bird, flying alongside them. Over time, the delvemaster became confused and lost her true form, becoming a half-feathered, half-human monster. When her subjects stormed the palace and pierced her with blazing spears and arrows, the two birds sang a final mournful song and turned to ashes together. She loved this story so much that she took the essence and marrow of birds and transformed them in the alchemical furnace, then had someone weave these materials into a luxurious feather coat. She could not see just how beautiful the coat was, but nonetheless enjoyed walking around the house while wearing it — it was meant to be seen by a person who no longer existed. As the garb fluttered, she always felt that a bird-like soul was flying and passing through her hands and shoulders, ever-present.

It's not clear how much of the legend is actually true but it could be inspired by the spirit birds.

I think I've said just about everything that I wanted to say. I'm curious if anyone else has any thoughts on the birds. I've listed most of them but there are one or two paintings I left out from fear of repetition.

I have a lot of additional Thoughts about the birds but I'll leave that for another post.

(Some) hsr characters and what games (i think) they're playing

Trailblazer: Tekken, any of the Mario games (there's a lot), GTA

March 7th: games like june's journey, any Nikki game (dressup games, love nikki / shining nikki), a random game (she's trying out a lot, you'll never know if a new game could be a favorite!)

Dan heng: Tekken, 2048-esque games, afk games (meanwhile, dan feng is high-key disappointed and low-key extremely interested)

Himeko: simulators i think, maybe alien shooters, games where you can craft things,

Welt: 2 or 3 connect games, probably some 2000s games (i can see him playing LOL tbh), maybe mmo's or generally rpg's

I think herta, screwllum and ruan mei are more than content treating TB as a game of sorts. Though i guess maybe they pick other games to play every other weekend.

Silver wolf: the game of life, i guess, idfk,,, egoshooters maybe

Guinaifen will play and livestream what is either popular or niche but gaining popularity. Unfortunately she'll rope other people into it too;

Sushang: Tekken, MMO's and whatever guinaifen makes her join

Unless being dragged into it, yanqing will probably not play many games? I guess maybe he'll rent/borrow a game, but technically, he's constantly training... so unless he's being dragged into it--! ...i can actually see him playing either tekken or a flight sim.

Qingque plays gacha games (while working). No, she didn't get Dan heng IL unfortunately. Nor his lightcone.

Bailu: i don't think the preceptors would let her have any games. But i think she's playing flight simulators too (it makes her nostalgic (IM NOT CRYING YOURE CRYING) for some reason) and maybe dating sims. For some reason. And centuries old games that are extremely niche and maybe banned (the adventures of the hcq THE GAME!)

I think if such a game exists, the general is probably also playing it (while crying ig)

10 pulls in and nothing but two copies of march 7th and one copy of serval. three four stars and one is even off banner, luck is coming you pray.

it's been 60 pulls and still no water dragon in sight, you feared this would happen... hard pity. 97 wishes left but you do have 25920 lefts in the bag so maybe you'll be fine. but gacha addiction is terrible when you have anxiety, so maybe you'll skip just once.

scaramouche heard you scream from the office, and he figured you either got the lunae guy or you lost again. he walked in as you were in tears. not sad but happy. so you did get him. well, did dan heng get you those shards? no! he did.

he leaned on your rolling chair, "did you get him?" he fiddled with the locs of your hair.

you took the mouse out of his hands and placing it back on your desk, "scara, are you jealous of dan heng?" glancing at your boyfriend, his face fell before he could react to your question,

"name, that's a funny accusation! why would i be jealous over a fictional character?" he looked everywhere but you. there's his tell. he's lying.

you noticed that he deliberately ignored the ten and thousands of screenshots of lunae's splash art. you hid a laugh while he clicked on the 10 pull button. "do you want to skip or look through?"

"look through." he clicked through each wish. three stars lightcones, a copy of asta, a two copies of yukong and yanqing.

"i was hoping your boyfriend luck would come through."

"wait for it." he replied, still clicking through. "do you want to wait or skip?" he asked again. you mumbled the latter.

he skipped and boom! lunae on your screen. he's now e1. "that's only one copy. we have five more to go." he turned your head and asked, "do you want to continue?"

"okay."

"okay." his warmth of his hand disappears to go back to the mouse.

after pulling and redeeming shards again, your five-star version of dan heng is perfectly maxxed out in terms of level, skill and eidions. you were pretty content after that. your beloved character is loved and always used in your teams. scaramouche was just as content as you were since your attention was averted away from dan heng and was back on him as things should be.

although, the next morning you did notice that dan heng's lightcone changed from your alternative lightcone, on the fall of an aeon, to his signature, brighter than the sun and not to mention, it's r5. you really need to have an intervention about this with your boyfriend. you leaned back in your chair, noticing an uncomfortable object on your chair. you turned around and saw a post-it-note attached to a pochita plushie.

"to name, don't give me and another intervention about spending money. it is worth it to see you smile. from scara."

Yep, that's me. You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation.

Let's go back a bit, shall we?

To the surprise of no one, as soon as Dan Heng IL dropped, I rushed to pull for him. There was a lot of hype around how strong he was, so I was confident that having him could only be a good thing.

So I pulled, with excitement and hope in my heart. The door went gold a bit early, and my heart was racing...

...Is this a joke.

It's not a very funny one, if so. For those keeping track, this account has an E1 Himeko and now an E0 Yanqing. Granted, the only usable standard for us is Clara, but *still!*

Oh well, I wasn't one to be defeated. I kept pulling, and after 26 pity, became the proud owner of Dan Heng Imbibitor Lunae.

I set him up with an S5 of Fall of an Aeon, and 2pc Imaginary set. His damage was good, but it wasn't long before I started to have problems--3 main ones, actually. Well, maybe 3-and-a-half.

1. Y'see, Destruction characters are usually tanky bruiser types. Way back in the Phantylia fight, I noted that Destruction characters were known for being good at sustaining themselves. Up until this point, that's been the case--all Destruction characters can heal themselves in some way. Phys MC heals by hitting Physical Weak enemies, Hook heals by hitting Enemies afflicted with Burn, Arlan heals by defeating enemies at low health, and Blade can set his HP to 50% from 1 as well as being able to recover from his follow up attack. Clara technically can't heal in her base kit, but her Lightcone provides healing.

DHIL doesn't have anything like that.

If he gets hit, that damage is permanent, and he can't recover it back. That means that the set I've farmed for him isn't usable. You know what that means...

Eugh. I hate farming this set.

But that was only one issue. The other is a bit more... well...

2. DHIL is an SP vacuum. So, there are certain characters that work better with him than others. Immediately, I found synergy between Arlan and DHIL. Arlan, at absolute worst, will always be SP Neutral. Unlike Blade, he never consumes SP, and has the ability to generate SP freely by opting to basic attack instead of using his skill.

Blade too is good with DHIL due to his low SP usage.

Phys MC and Hook are iffy, but Hook is close to being anti-synergistic with DHIL cuz she basically has the SP needs of a Hunt character. She can only heal if she hits an enemy with Burn. And she can *only* inflict Burn by using her skill. On top of all of this, she is completely single target outside of one single instance of enhanced skill.

Phys MC has similar SP needs, but his blast attack is freely accessible and as long as the enemy is phys weak, he can still heal. So he's much tankier and he can still hit multiple enemies even without his skill.

All of this to say that DHIL and Blade were going to be the DPS, while Arlan and Caelus were going to be SP generators. In order for this to work, they both needed to increase their speed, but if Caelus and DHIL were on the same team, then...

3. I didn't have enough LCs. If DHIL was using fall of an Aeon, the only unaccounted for LC would be Woof Walk Time, but as discussed, we aren't running Hook on this team. And, even if we were, she would not be able to use her skill. This is still *kind* of usable for Phys MC, but only on enemies he's already broken.

This, at least, was a problem with a pretty easy solution:

Which leads directly into--

3.5. Jingliu. Now, I have reason to believe that Jingliu... Won't work. On this account. If you know you know, but she just. I. Look, I die enough without her, I don't need her to speedrun my death.

Up until this point I've been engaging in a secret strategy passed down through generations of my family line, called "lying". The screenshot at the top of this post was my jades after I'd already pulled for his LC. Before that, my funds were:

I only had enough for 1 weapon pity. So I pulled and--

...I got it?

WAIT I GOT IT!

This is the first string of good luck I've had on this account, I would like to thank the academy. I'll never emotionally recover from this good fortune.

This means that, as of right now:

1. Arlan is using Something Irreplaceable (Clara LC)

2. Caelus is using S5 Fall of an Aeon (Herta Shop LC)

3. Blade is using S1 A Secret Vow (Arlan LC)

4. Dan Heng IL is using his own LC

5. Hook is using Woof Walk Time (Peppy LC)

After this, there was the Aurum Alley event which contained no actual combat, so it was mostly just an exercise in mashing as hard and as fast as I possibly could.

Oh my god now that you've invited me to rant I will not shut up fair warning. I love the Hoyo characters too much (is it obvious that I focus on the story and the characters vs the battle tactics, I do not know how to build characters at all dfkshagsdlgaslgda) In fact, related to this point I have not yet begun playing hsr (Genshin is using up all my storage currently) but I plan on starting soon! I am incredibly well-versed in characters and lore though ahaha

High Cloud Quintet?! Yes. Absolutely, dear god. Side note, I desperately need Jing Yuan's gender. Please. Please give me the hair, I need it. Also Baiheng!!! She's so squishy she just has that energy. Also I'd like her hair colour to be mine naturally. It's like the prettiest pale lavender I want to scream she's just so aesthetic!!

Personally, I'm not super big on Dan Heng but he's big in the fandom so it's kind of hard to not simp a little bit. Something about dragon-humans istg I. I cannot take Yingxing seriously for the record, he just gives me silly vibes. Like yeah he's stoic and all but you can't tell me that that man does not have a killer sense of humour somewhere in there. I can't explain it.

Oooh okay for favourite characters first of all babygirl Yanqing!!! He's such a typical Minie character I can't explain it there is a pattern between my kins istg. He's so floofy and he deserves protection at all costs.

Also him and Dr. Ratio are basically Honkai's Kavehtham there will be no further questions on this topic kashlgwakwa.

Fu Xuan! She is stunning. Have you seen her hairstyle shalnqladbskvasdbkvadska I. I need those pins. Also she's a cute short little twink (affectionate) Everything about her outfit is just so aesthetic. The colours, the moons and stars... If I could cosplay a hsr character it would be her. Besides I'm short enough for it lol

She definitely gets a spot on the sassy character list. But THE WAY THAT SHE'S SASSY. It's like smart sassy. Alhaitham-style sassy. I love her... Also love the fact that she can see the future. Ugh I'm currently obsessed with divination so yes!!! (I have a tarot deck and I'm so excited to start ehehe. Got some shiny crystals too and some moon cycle and constellation guide sheets.) Fu Xuan also gets bonus points because of the little diamond-shaped amethyst she has. (Amethyst is my beloved birthstone.)

Kafka! Where to start about her. Fluffy coat thief. I know you're a simp so I wouldn't have to convince you on this one lol.

She is so pretty. And elegant. And I love her so so much. I would date her in a heartbeat but I don't think I'd have a chance tbh ksadkgakgawd

Her outfit is similar to my ideal wardrobe style so she gets bonus points because I'm jealous. (Although I am getting a couple modern corsets soon so yay!!! And I have black leather pants ehehe)

She's so lesbian and nobody is surprised skdadhwkasajdkawg. I like Silver Wolf too ehehe but Kafka is easily my favourite Stellaron Hunter.

Lastly, Ruan Mei.

Ethereal. Elegant. Smart. Shares my hair colour (along with the turquoise streak!!) I'm not sure if I'd want to date her or be her tbh. I love how she never gives up on what she wants or needs.

I also would want to cosplay her. Maybe I will, just for that dress kagskxgakgakaa

She gets her bonus points from her little cat critter creation thingies. I'm going to cry because they are so cute.

There are tons more of characters I like but these are easily my top five! Maybe I'll rant more later, who knows.
