"Oh fuck," you say as the massive reptile's head emerges from the sand. Maybe it's a vain hope that this sea monster will be reasonable like Calibani, or maybe it's just your urge to be polite, but you stick your head out of the captain's cabin and shout, "Sorry, Mr. Alligator-"

"Crocodile," Calibani corrects you. "Only crocodiles have the snaggletooth smile - alligators have overbites."

"Crocodile, right. Sorry, Mr. Crocodile! We didn't mean to wake you up! Our boat just got stuck in the sand, and we were-"

I KNOW YOU.

The words thunder inside your brain as the crocodisle turns its massive head around to face you, its enormous snout locked closed in a snaggletoothed grin. It takes you a moment to realize you didn't hear the words so much as you thought them - or, rather, something else thought them into your own brain.

SHIP-BUILDER. WHALE-KILLER. HUMAN. YOUR KIND ARE MISCHIEF MAKERS WHO SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT, AND CHANGE THE COURSE OF THE SEA IN YOUR WAKE. I KNOW YOU.

"I-I'm not making any mischief, honest," you protest. "We just got stuck is all-"

"it's true!" Calibani shouts. "Sailor is a nice human! They tried to save me even when I was going to eat them!" She clasps her hands together and shouts, "Please, don't hurt them!"

The crocodisle cocks its head to one side, its sharp pupils fixing on Calibani as she stands next to you in the captain's cabin.

A SERPENT? A CHILD OF SYCORAX, NO LESS. YOU TWO ARE AN ODD PAIR.

"Child of Sycorax?" You look at Calibani for an explanation, but she just stares back at you, apparently just as confused as you are.

The crocodisle shifts further, and as it does the sand covering its body begins to break apart and slide off its back and into the water, revealing more of its pale yellow scales.

I WILL FREE YOUR SHIP, HUMAN, IF YOU TELL ME WHAT YOUR BUSINESS IS HERE IN THE SEA.

Well, you got your wish - the giant crocodisle is talking to you. Now you just need to know what to say, and for that, you consult your compass.

i so badly want one of those fic examinations of steve's relationship with joyce and hopper but solely through eddie's pov like hear me out

steve and eddie chat a lot in the upside down (and later in the hospital, when they learn hop is alive). steve has taken charge of filling eddie in on the rest of their of-age crew without the kids butting in. he never mentions his own parents, but he talks about the rest of the party's a lot, especially joyce and hopper. eddie knows what it's like to desperately want someone to be your parent and trying to hide it from his own childhood, when he would try to be cool about wayne dropping him off at his dad's house. steve obviously adores joyce and hopper, thinks the world of them and legitimately looks up to them.

eddie isn't sure what he expects from a cop who came back to life and the world's most determined housewife, but he's excited to meet them as someone steve loves.

cue eddie's horror when he realizes that neither of them really feel much for steve rather than annoyance and vague distrust. that joyce trusts will with eddie, an accused murderer, in a heartbeat and still hesitates to leave him with steve. that hopper brushes off every ounce of steve's hero worship and joy.

he tries to broach the topic with steve, gently, and is heartbroken when steve genuinely has no idea what he's talking about. and not because he's oblivious, but because steve thinks that's what he deserves. he thinks that's the parental love that someone who was an asshole in high school needs, because that's what would make him a good person. he needs people to call him out constantly, obviously, because why else would they keep doing it? why would nancy? at least they're here. at least they're not ignoring him. at least they're not forcing him into a box. they just want him to be better.

like, this is the man who thanked a girl for calling him bullshit and telling him she never loved him. he doesn't Know that's not how you're supposed to handle things. no one ever taught him that.

and now eddie's gotta figure out how he can teach steve how to be loved the right way without outing himself and his huge crush on his love-starved dork of a friend.

Disappointed that, in spite of using a more accurate translation in Chapter 2 of Crisis Core, EC has switched over to the original English localization for Chapter 3—in spite of having Japanese audio, meaning you can literally hear that the lines exchanged between Genesis and Sephiroth are NOT WHAT THE SUBTITLES SAY if you have THE MOST BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF JAPANESE.

「いい だろう」 (ii darou) is not "come and try." It has never been "come and try." In context, it's literally "that's good" or "that would be nice."

Let me clarify this, once more: in Japanese, Genesis says "I'll be a hero too," and Sephiroth responds "That would be nice."

This fucked up no-homo English localization has utterly ruined Western fandom's perception of these two since the game first came out, and the continued refusal to fix it is one of the most infuriating things to deal with. It makes Genesis seem petty, bitter, self-absorbed; it makes Sephiroth seem arrogant, sanctimonious, like the kind of person who viciously belittles his closest friends.

That's not who either of them are, particularly not with each other. Genesis didn't want to surpass Sephiroth, he wanted to be his equal. And Sephiroth wanted that too! Sephiroth wanted an equal as much as Genesis wanted to be able to stand at his side! Sephiroth was as supportive as Genesis was determined, and both had too much respect for one another not to give these matches of theirs everything they had. Genesis would never accept a victory that wasn't genuine, and Sephiroth would never belittle him by offering such a thing.

They were playing. They were supporting each other. They were having fun working toward a mutual goal because they love each other.

It's been over 15 years and the update dropped during PRIDE MONTH and English localizers STILL HAVE NOT FUCKING FIXED IT.
