31 Days of Productivity Reading もう一回!: Day 7
Before: I do have some books that I’m hoping get chosen with this new spinner wheel site, but leaving it up to fate is my favorite pastime.
Starting off strong with the new wheel! Today’s read is going to be the most recent volume of 光が死んだ夏!This isn’t a series that I’m just starting, unlike the majority of options, but one that I’m keeping up with as it releases and had to include because I just couldn’t wait to read it. I initially expected this series to go in a completely different direction than what’s currently happening, but I’ve been really enjoying how it’s turning out, especially in the last volume (volume four).
Also, I plan on making some wagashi today so hopefully I’ll share some pics.
Tumblr media
After: I made anmitsu today! I love it, but it's so much work to put each bowl together that I don't make it very often. The bananas are freshly homegrown from my neighbor's sister's tree! We're not here to talk about dessert though, we're here to talk about manga.
I did indeed finish my volume of 光が死んだ夏 today! I've been following this series since it was just one wee little volume and it quickly became one of my favorites. However, now that the series is getting a little longer, I think I'm noticing some pacing issues. I loved volumes one and two, but three fell a little flat for me. Volume four was fantastic, but this volume slowed down again, with the exception of one or two really great chapters. One thing that really intrigued me about that though was the あとがき where Mokmok Sensei mentioned that volumes one through three were part of one arc and volumes four and five were another arc, so the next volume will start a new arc for the series. Maybe I just don't like the way they end things? Depending on how long the series goes on for, I'm sure that Mokmok Sensei will improve over the course of the series so I'm still holding out that the series end as a whole still has as much of a chance as any other series to land on both feet. I think when the series is nearing its conclusion I might go back and reread the whole thing to see what I think of the pacing when its read altogether. This volume also circled back to something that was mentioned and dropped in volume one or two, which I was really pleased to see, but it was only in the extra chapter which just kind of miffed me. It certainly seemed like something that I would want in the main story, but I understand the constraints of serializing a manga, especially one as lore heavy as this one.
Anyways, I ended up reading 191 pages of manga today to finish my sixth read of the month! I'm honestly really liking this "method" (as if its on purpose lmao) of front loading my manga reads to the beginning of the month. Now I feel like I have the whole rest of the month to focus on reading novels without worrying about getting that manga count up, like what happened last time I did this challenge. Don't let me regret saying that.

I love that I can use my full linguistic repertoire with my boyfriend, like we speak English to each other but he's learning Swedish and most of the time single words in Italian or French are close enough to Portuguese for him to understand so it's truly <33 a big win

These are my language learning timelines and how long I've studied to get to that level!
English: fluent C2 > about thirteen years. I started learning when I was 5 (in kindergarten). I got to this level by age 18, when I started working as a professional English - Burmese translator.
Korean: fluent TOPIK 6 level > eight years. I taught myself how to read hangeul at age 15 and achieved TOPIK level 6 in 23. It should be noted that I attended a language program in Korea for nine months to accelerate the process. I started from level 1 and ended in 4/5 in nine months.
Chinese: advanced HSK6 level > eleven years. I started learning chinese when I was 13 and now I'm 24. And no, my chinese ancestry didn't help because no one in my family speaks Chinese.
Japanese: Intermediate JLPT N3 level > nine years. Like Korean, I taught myself how to read hiragana and katakana at age 15 but I prioritized Chinese and Korean. It should be noted that I really struggled with Japanese and had to attend basic classes three times to get to an N5 level. And then twice more to get to N4.
I think this is important for all langblrs to realize! I am not "gifted" at all. I just started studying a bit earlier than y'all because I knew my life long interests are in language, literature and translation. I learned all these so that I could read books in their original language.
It should be noted that in Myanmar, I graduated high school at age 16/17. Since then, I've been attending a distance education university (before I dropped out in 2021 of course) and I've been working freelance or part time jobs. So this is an actual realistic timeline as an adult who also has a life outside of studying.
If you work full time, study full time or have responsibilities in your life that you have to prioritize, you might need to take a few years longer than me. You might even need to retake classes and fail a few tests. And it's okay.
I can't emphasize this enough so I will do this again and again: not being able to quickly learn language is not a failure on your part. Don't fall into ageist traps because you really do retain your brain functions well into your years. You can keep learning and keep improving as an adult. Look up neuroplasticity and stop listening to "polyglot" influencers.
Another thing I want to mention is in my last post, I wrote that language learning takes years and you'll just have to make these years bearable and I mean it. Just sitting down and studying for hours is annoying to me. So, I personally make it bearable by reading stories and translating songs or poems because that's what my brain likes. I like writing chinese characters but it's boring to just sit down and write them. So I write them while watching tv because I have adhd and I need to fidget anyway. My goal is to read books in their original languages so I read, read and read. You have to figure out why you want to learn these languages and see how you can make it bearable.

5 years of linghxr 🎂
Tumblr media
Today marks 5 years of linghxr! Well, technically Tumblr notified me of my blog’s anniversary 2 days ago. But I didn’t make my first post until July 12th, so I’ve decided to celebrate today instead.
I started learning Mandarin Chinese as a little kid attending weekend Chinese school, and I also took it in high school. I got 认真 about it in college after realizing my Chinese wasn’t even good enough to test out of the 1st year Chinese course. I spent all my free time studying the Chinese Grammar Wiki and successfully placed into 2nd year Chinese!
I started this blog the following summer as I tried not to forget everything before the 3rd year Chinese course, while also studying Russian. Over the past 5-6 years, I have…
…read 3 webnovels and 1 book
…watched 17 cdramas and 25 seasons of variety/reality shows
…posted 282 times on this blog
…made 8313 flashcards in Anki
07/20/24 The contest is closed, and I have contacted the winner.
To give back to the langblr community, I am gifting winner’s choice of prize from two resources/platforms I have used myself. They are both digital to make this more accessible.
Prizes
The lucky winner can pick one of these options:
Option 1 - iTalki gift card for $60 of iTalki credits
Option 2 - Pleco Pro Bundle worth $59.99 (see under the cut for bundle content)
Requirements to enter
To enter, all you need to do is like, reblog, or comment on this post. You can do more than one if you like, but please don’t spam the post. Feel free to vote in the poll too, but that’s just for fun 😄
You have one week (until next Friday, July 19th) to enter. Shortly after, I will select a winner at random and message them to coordinate details (make sure your Tumblr settings allow me to message you). If there is no response after 48 hours, I will select someone else. If you are under 18, please get parent or guardian permission.
Thank you for 5 wonderful years of blogging!
Via Pleco, the pro bundle includes:
Our more expensive bundle includes almost every "feature" add-on plus 6 different dictionaries; two English-to-Chinese ones (one smaller one with Pinyin and one larger one without), the massive ABC Chinese-to-English, the bidirectional Oxford Chinese Dictionary, the small-but-example-rich Tuttle Chinese-English, and (to stretch your reading skills a bit) the Chinese-to-Chinese Guifan dictionary.

I realized I haven’t done much with this blog specifically as a langblr (so much as a repository for various jokes and study suggestions that I haven’t really heeded) but now that I have booked my tickets for a long-ish trip to Japan, I should change that. I’m not the most aesthetically inclined or gifted person so this almost certainly won’t be the beautiful langblr of one’s wildest Pinterest dream but we make do. If anything it would be just be a ‘this is what I did and how, these are some interesting things I learned, grammar is still kicking my ass’ list post.
Introduction/自己紹介

hii! im new here. any langblr tips? also 📉 and 🎵 on the asks
Hi ro, nice to meet you! I'm Anna. Thank you for the ask :)
📉 your least favorite course/a course you did poorly in?
Germanic Philology. The professor only asked 4 questions on rotation. I had prepared 3 of them. He asked me the fourth one. Argh!! I passed the exam somehow but with a really bad grade. It didn't affect my final graduation grade but I still kick myself when I remember about it.
🎵 describe your “vibe” as a student in a song?
I was dreading this one actually, hehe. I'm going to pick "I Forgot That You Existed" by T Swift. As an undergrad, I was v stressed by how I wanted to get a high graduation grade. Now that I'm doing my master's I just want to get out of here as soon as possible and with minimum effort.
langblr tips
From what I can see on your blog you are already rocking it! I just followed you from my main.
I really appreciate you putting together a Telugu resources masterlist. When I was researching Hindi I realized there weren't many resources both on Tumblr and outside, so I'm excited to see what you will find/do next.
Also, introducing yourself like this to other blogs is great :) If you haven't already, go check out @hindisoup. They learned Hindi but post about language learning and India in general as well.
Lastly, please recommend some movies in Telugu to me 'cause I've only watched Hindi movies so far and I obviously need to widen my horizons.
(ps in case you are new to Tumblr in general, it's usually recommended to change the privacy settings so that people can't see your likes but ofc you decide)

about me!
I just realized I don't really have any info about me or anything on my blog for people to know, so I am gonna make a little about me post really quick!
My name is Jacob, I'm 23 years old, and I live in the United States. My main interests are foreign languages, linguistics, and politics :)
Currently, I am only fluent in English, but I can understand French very well because it was a minor of mine in college, and I am actively working on improving my Mandarin and Portuguese! I also am extremely interested in all languages, and I would love to one day learn Welsh, Icelandic, and Korean. I also learned Spanish and German in high school, so I have some degree of knowledge in those.
I am a bit of a shy person, but I would love to interact with more langblrs and really expand my circle on tumblr, so don't hesitate to reach out and submit asks or send messages if you want!

Story starts in Gavaldon. Two kids get kidnapped, end up in School for Good and Evil. Agatha wants to leave with her friend Sophie, but Sophie wants her prince Tedros to fall for her. They try to survive the school's weird classes else they turn into animals. Agatha is succeeding (sort of) and helps Sophie with her Evil classes by turning into a cockroach. Tedros falls for Sophie, but he realizes that he was meant for Agatha all along. Sophie embraces her dark side and attacks the Good school, crashes their Ball, and turns into a full-fledged witch. She tricks Good into attacking Evil, and Evil holds their own not-Ball. Sophie manages to turn the Good evil, and the students mud-fight against each other, turning each other good and evil. Sophie tries to change her narrative by attacking the Storian (self-writing pen) but ends up in the School Master's fairytale kiss, which she rejects. The School Master tries to stab Agatha but Sophie jumps in. The School Master's Good dead brother's ghost enters Professor Sadian's body, the Storian returns to its tower, and the students' uniforms turn silver and united. Sophie turns back into her beautiful self, and she and Agatha poof/disappear. The end.

So I’ve been having trouble remembering the days of the week in Turkish. And I wanted to do a photo vocab kinda post (cause I learn better with visuals) but it felt like a weird kinda thing to do for days of the week. So I decided to make a calendar for September! Feel free to use it if you want to

21.06.21 [day 24/30; upopulære meninger]
did not make the time to start the review of the next chapter in SSiN but i made it a point to talk about my day and the podcast i had listened to:
talked about how hard it was to exercise today lol
talked about spending too much money at the grocery store because i always need to try the new things
talked about trying to walk my dog earlier than usual but how that failed because it was way too hot outside
listened to a podcast episode about unpopular opinions (re: food, entertainment, relationships, etc)
listed the ones i remembered, gave an explanation on why i either agreed or disagreed
thought my pacing was pretty okay
didn't struggle for words really
was able to speak cohesively instead of short. awkward. sentences.
