Big Fibre arts update

It's been a while since I updated anything. The darkness gets to me and every day adulting is sth I'll never get used to. But here we are.

Caution: fluffiness ahead!

First of all I prettied up my small niddy noddy and my nostepinne with a little gold colour

Nalbinding: My socks take shape

I'm currently washing/staming last month's yarns:

Red/black: 89% supersoft merino/10% silk/10% cashmere. Will probably become a needle lace round shawl.

Small turquoise: merino/viscose spun out of my first carded batt

Orange/blue: 90% really soft merino/10% mulberry silk, took it as a colour management practise and now I know i have much to learn about that.

Thin green: alpaca mix for my dear friend.

Violet: can't find the label but I think it's 70% merino, 20% alpaca and 10% linen. It's so soft and squishy, this will become nalbound fingerless gloves and other wintery stuff

And last but not least: all my stash finally fits inside my jars. And i'm on a good way to decimate it enough that i can buy new stuff in early April!

Thank you! I... actually haven't ever recorded my progress because I'm rather embarrassed about it (including how long it takes me to complete stuff that seem simple at a glance 😭), if you ever watch me draw I think it'd be very frustrating because it's almost never a linear process of sketch -> line art -> colours 💦. This is because I always notice problems I didn't notice at first in my sketch and have to frequently make up for it by re-sketching (and finding refs) in the middle of lining, or do a loooot of adjusting and fixing near the end. So it looks a bit more like sketch -> start line art -> several hours of fixing my mistakes and redoing parts -> FINALLY finish the lines -> colour -> possibly more fixing.

Redoing things in the middle results in the sketch usually looking quite different from the one I initially started with, so I can't even make a proper progress post unless I saved screenshots from earlier stages. HOWEVER. I do have one example I can share because I did send friends screenshots, so here's a rough idea of how I made this piece!

I care a lot about getting anatomy correct even if parts are covered in the final product, so I usually can't avoid sketching the body before I add clothes, hence the different colours just to help myself understand the pose/anatomy better. It wouldn't be this much of a struggle if I sat down and did some more drills practicing anatomy properly via figure drawing or something, but well... I'm lazy... so I always just study the pose or anatomy I need for the piece on the spot.

All in all, I'd say my steps are pretty straightforward and nothing special, but hopefully this was somewhat helpful!

Finally finished the custom OC garage kit my friend and I collaborated on! The paintwork COULD have been a bit cleaner but given I didn't have an airbrush I think it turned out pretty good! This is the 2nd fully custom OC figure I've made which you can see behind Xiias here! (I've done more customised existing figures which you can also see) and I'd love to make more in the future!

I like to think that they train together quite regularly to hone their skills. Some days they’re just sparring together and on other days they go all out, a spectacle that other Briggs soldiers like to watch.

This was mostly an exercise to improve my full body drawings, that’s why Thea is wearing historical inaccurate sportswear. But hey, military uniform inspired training clothes would be neat!

hey!! artist friends!! i'd really like to dive into trying to improve my art, particularly when it comes to drawing things that aren't just direct redraws of screenshots.

i especially need help with things like drawing complex poses, side profiles, perspective etc. but i also need help with figuring out shading / lighting because i've procrastinated on learning how that works for way too long lol.

( any drawings of mine that are well-shaded are screenshot redraws, so i had a direct ref for where to put the shadows )

if anyone can direct me to any (preferably free) resources for any of these things, or give me tips that worked for you, please let me know!! you can reblog / reply to this post or send me an ask.
