When you die, the first thing that sets in is how stupid you are. How stupid you were to put yourself in this situation. Even if it wasn’t your fault, even if you were just an innocent bystander in your own demise. Although how pathetic is that? Not even having any hand in your death, someone else taking the last choice you could ever make from your hands and leaving you helpless?

The next thing that sets in is the gravity of your new reality, however short it may be. You realize the end is coming, and not in a metaphorical sense of the future. When you’re born a bullet is fired at your heart. It seems so far away as you grow up. But when the end is there, you can see the bullet approaching. Too fast to dodge, too slow to do anything but watch it come. 

Time is the next thing to leave. It slows down, stretching seconds into hours. You stand there, lay there, sit, whatever you’re doing and are unable to move. You just have to let it happen to you. Even more pathetic. 

What was even worse was that Lovely was just trying to make their life better. They hadn’t wanted to be stuck in a life where they were treated lesser simply because of the circumstances of their birth. They had lived their childhood with fingers crossed for a miracle to happen. To feel that sharp tang of magic trying to pull them to some invisible barrier that any magic-users they came across talked about. But puberty had come and gone and they had still been the same. Small speck of rust along for the ride in the imperium machine. Only the empowered could hold a difference.

That hope had been returned when the new king was appointed after the death of his mother. The media had followed him for all of his life. The media had noticed his friendship with one of Lovely’s own kinds of people. The media had watched the couple have their first kiss in a car, cameras capturing it and plastering it all over the internet. A promise of a different kind of future. If one of the unempowered could be raised to such a high position, surely it meant more change for the rest of them?

But that was all a play of bureaucracy. A way to give false hope so the unimaginable didn’t occur. Nothing would change for Lovely. They had accepted that. But that didn’t mean they couldn’t force something. No external cause would come by chance. But they could seek out a chance.

They snuck out of their parents home, a hoodie on to protect them from the storm brewing overhead. Dark clouds blotted out the sun, the air heavy with the promise of rain. They left behind that city that had held them in the same place for so many years, following tales and stories of the abandoned. 

Leaves were scattered all over the ground, all wetted down from the rain a few hours ago. They wrapped their arms around themselves, unsure of where else to go. Overgrown greenery scaled over most of the metal machinery, bright paint faded from years of desertion. They walked further down the cracked asphalt paths, taking in the dark shapes of all the unused amusement park rides against the sky. 

None of the signs flickered. This place had been emptied of life for so many years. Yet, if they squinted hard enough they could imagine what this place might have been decades ago. Cheering and laughs as boyfriends tried and failed to win prizes for their lovers. Overjoyed screams of exhilaration when the rides carried people on a twisting adventure. Gone was the smell of rot, replaced with unhealthy fairground food. 

Lovely smiled as they skipped towards one of the ferris wheels. It loomed overhead, like some kind of silent sentry that still waited for someone to come ride one last time. The colored paint was peeling back from the metal, but the structure still remained whole for the most part. They climbed inside one of the cabins, sitting down and closing their eyes. They could imagine the way the music probably blasted as the wheel slowly spun, moving its rider to the heights where they could look over the whole of the park. They wondered if any couples had partaken in a shared kiss at the apex, lit up by the flashing lights below like in the movies. How many kids dropped something over the edge of the cabin to watch it hurtle towards the ground below when the parents weren’t watching and just trying to relax for whatever time they could?

They stepped out of the cabin, searching for another ride to let their imaginations run wild. They already forgot their original reason for seeking this place out. This place felt so detached from reality, it was easy to pretend that they occupied a different world. Like some alternate universe.

Their eyes locked on the pendulum ride several feet ahead. The painted sun in the middle was all but gone, but the shape still remained. The top of the pendulum had long since snapped off, but the corral still remained. They didn’t climb inside, simply standing in front of the structure. The line probably snaked all around, everyone wanting to experience that loss of gravity that came when the corral came rushing downwards once again. A drop tower stood proudly next to the ride, the seat locked a few feet above the platform. 

They moved towards it, fingers tracing the rusted metal frame. Their ears rang as they could practically hear the screams that came when the seats came rushing down. Their own heartbeat quickened as they imagined the slight stall at the top to build the anticipation.

“Boo.”

They should have moved away from that ride. No, they shouldn’t have come to park seeking out change. Insignificance would have been safer.

Insignificance wouldn’t have them pushed into a room in the basement of a house. Insignificance wouldn’t have made their hands turn red from how hard they banged against the door, voice cracking as they begged to be released. They never would have needed to hear Vincent’s teasing laughter on the other side, taunting them for their stupidity.

Lovely wrapped their shaking hands in their hoodie, cold set deep into their bones. The tips of their fingers have long since gone numb, but they can’t find in themselves to care. Vincent doesn’t. But they also don’t expect him to care. He just seeks out the bare minimum of care to make sure he can drink their blood. His “ambrosia”.

He doesn’t care when they whine of a headache, instead just biting deeper into their neck. He taunts them when they forget their own name, licking the trickling blood from their wrist. He laughs when they ask for ice every time he decides they were good enough to choose what food they want to eat. He doesn’t care about how their body is cold to the touch, or how their hands shake every time they stand up.

Lovely isn’t stupid. They know they’re dying. They’re stupid for going to the amusement park. They’re stupid for thinking it could have ended any other way.

They stare at the wall of their little room, trying to ignore the cries of the newest arrival in Vincent Solaire’s personal little blood bank. If they close their eyes, they can feel their body tilting and spinning even as their legs feel like lead in water. They tell themselves that they crave Vincent’s bite as a reminder that they’re still alive. He tries to tell them its because they like it. That they’re a rare kind of cattle.

They aren’t going to ever leave. They know that now, their hope having died when their tongue grew cracked in their mouth. They can see that bullet, but still they just lay on the mattress given to them as their captor moans into the bites he’s made on their body, drinking the crimson that feels more sluggish than fast-paced in their veins. They just want the bullet to pierce their heart to put an end to the blood that got them here.

Their nails are cracked and they try not to touch anything in case they break to the nailbed again. Vincent is talking to someone upstairs, they can hear it past the ringing in their ears. He’ll come back down once the meeting is over. He’ll sink his fangs into them and drink until they pass out. It only takes a half a minute or so. 

Thump.

They open their eyes, vision blurry as the sounds of arguing go silent. Did Vincent kill his stranger? It wouldn’t be the first time. 

The door opens and they expect to see familiar silver eyes. 

“Oh my god.”

new character idea...

So i have this character Kodiak, wolf man, he's well known for coming from a huge family and then going on to create his own big, but not quite as big, family-

Its been up in the air as to whether he's a middle or youngest kid but honestly, after 10+ siblings i dont think the "Oldest, middle, youngest" dynamic really applies anymore. SO technically he is a middle kid, but that doesnt really affect anything, his brothers and him were treated p much the same. Yknow, brought up to be respectable boys that treat women with respect, but also catholic (or catholic adjacent) and some of the more....questionable preaching that CAN come with it (i.e. queerphobia)

Now he's only ever been mentioned to have brothers, but most of the time it's mentioned was in the flashbacks to his teen years, and then every now and again when some of his brothers pop up for visit or smth.

wHAT if - he has some younger siblings we havent really seen yet. Specifically what if he h a d a sister, but when Kodi was in school she was likee...10 or smth, so there was a big age gap, and they didnt hang out as much as kodi did with his older and similarly aged brothers. THEN when his sister graduated she went off, did her own thing, she basically quietly cut ties with the family.

Heres where the FUN part comes. What if Kodi just decides to get the whole family back together some day. Like..."I miss when we were younger and hung out all the time, lets get everyone together" and he basically makes a big post on Facebook to hunt down all his siblings and organize a family reunion. And he succeeds, he hears back from his parents who agree to help round up all their kids, and he personally gathers his older and same-age brothers since he's closest to them.

And then all his brothers, now aged between late 40s to mid 20s actually shows up; but his sister doesn't. 1 hr passes, people start trying to get in contact with her, but eventually a car pulls up. Someone steps out but no one recognizes them- They vaguely look like their estranged sister, but this person has short hair, stronger jawline and facial hair- They look like one of the brothers but they've never seen them before-

"Hey guys its uh....its me-"

Everyone is confused, some are annoyed from their confusion. Kodi looks at em, and it just clicks; Oh duh, his "sister" isnt his sister anymore, they're his brother. It only makes sense for Kodi to recognize it first, and he welcomes them with a nice warm hug.

Then his new brother would probably reintroduce himself by his new name, etc etc unless they decide to keep their old name or a variation of it (in my head i've been using Sam to refer to them ; Samantha being their deadname, Samuel being their new name).

Whether or not the parents would handle this change well could go either way.

-Either they could be accepting immediately; "Oh we've seen this before with Gay kodi, how different could this gender thing be"

-or they could reject it at first; "oh you're our only girl!" "you'll always be my little girl" "this is nonsense" but accept him after taking a min to think and from a stern lecture from Kodi

If the first option, it might be good for the parents to meet Kodi's nb/trans kid(s) first before Sam comes to the reunion, that way it might make more sense that they're less shocked about the gender stuff (being cishet and not very interested in doing a whole lot of research into the queer zone). Get the awkwardness out some like: "My newest granddaughter-" "Actually father, they're just your grandchild/grandson..." "Oh! my newest grandson...you're such a beautiful little girl" "boy-" "beautiful little- boy!" (well meaning and loving but trying their best and gets the hang of it before Sam arrives)

If the second option, maybe their ignorance on the topic could still be shown by them being introduced to Kodi's trans/nb kid(s), but in the form of not knowing what to call them, and not really correcting themselves much when they mess it up. "My newest granddaughter!" "Actually father, they're your grandchild/grandson" "Oh well isnt she-" "He" "...he- just a beauiful young lady" "Okay father, lets take a step back, this is my s o n -" (well meaning and loving, but still needs work and they slip up often)

The reaction could also be different between parents like when Kodi was forced out of the closet; mom being more accepting but still concerned, and dad being just flat out not accepting until big thing curved that some.

Just thought it only made sense that at least one of his many siblings would be queer alongside Kodi B) who knows, maybe one of his "brothers" are closet transfem too, that'd be fun.

Queen of Hearts pt 13

“Oh, my dear it’s so lovely of you to come to brunch. I was starting to feel a little put off you know. All those invitations you so politely refused. I was beginning to think you were avoiding me.”

Stacie smiled and sipped her cool iced tea to give herself a moment. It was true, she had ignored all of Edith’s requests to have lunch. And yes, she had been avoiding the older woman. It was a matter of self-preservation really. Keeping up the appearance of normality around someone as observant as Edith Roussard-Ford was never easy. She had a keen eye and open ear to everything that happened to the biggest families in society.

“Well…I suppose I can be frank with you. Now…that things are…resolved.”

The old woman across from her nodded encouragement and leaned forward eager for any tidbit she could glean from Stacie. It was necessary even she’d rather not talk about life with Weston. When dealing with Edith you had to give some to get some.

“Of course, my dear. Dreadful business…”

“It was hard to get away…often times my only haven was my work. Weston was…” Stacie trailed off and cleared her throat. It wasn’t acting, the rush of anxiety she experienced just thinking about that time robbed her of speech. “Weston Whitman was a very controlling man. Controlling and more often than not…violent.”

It never got any easier admitting the truth of things but she raised her chin defiantly. Edith’s eyes widened slightly but her surprise was more about Stacie admitting it than the confirmation itself. She waited a beat for the other woman to ask what she knew was coming.

“Oh, dreadful. Just dreadful. And still…you never knew? There wasn’t a hint of suspicion about his true character?”

“Of his character, yes. Of his actual coming and goings and affairs…no. I had no knowledge of those terrible things. I shudder to think of him, under my roof, sleeping next to me self-satisfied with the blood of innocent women on his hands. What a joke I must have been to him with my work at the shelter, helping him keep up the façade unknowingly.”

“To think nothing of the scandal about the money.”

Of course, the money was far more important a topic than her public humiliation and shame. Stacie let her gaze drop demurely. Money was everything in this world, who had it, who needed it, and who stole it…

“I’ll admit Edith, I had some concerns about Weston’s business. He seemed edgy and evasive and he asked me to empty my personal safe…spending cash. Some jewelry. It was nothing that would ever pay back his investors.”

“I heard the federal agents seized everything. It’s a wonder you have a roof over your head, my dear.”

Stacie’s smile was brief and coy. “Much like oil and water, money and love simply do not mix. When you’re a Conrad you learn that at quite a young age.”

Edith leaned back to watch her carefully. Weighing all that she had learned and the earnestness in which Stacie had conveyed it. She could see the respect dawn in Edith’s gaze and when the woman leaned forward again it was with eager confidence.

“You may be a Conrad in name but you are Helene’s daughter in more than appearance. Your father barely had a nickel to his name when she ran off with him. Now there’s a scandal for you!”

It was surprising and Edith laughed gleefully when it showed on her face. She’d been raised her whole life on the presumption that her mother hand done what she had been expected to do. Money marries into money.

“Didn’t know that did you? She might have run off with August but she was no fool. Van der Berg family lawyers ensured he couldn’t take a dime of it.” Interesting. Stacie made a soft thoughtful sound and Edith continued unprompted. “You have to hand it to August. He made a name for himself. All that money is his by right…I suppose.”

Stacie’s brows came up and she tipped her head to the side. “You sound doubtful of that Edith.”

“I wouldn’t dream of speaking ill of your father, dear. I know you’re not close but there are some bonds that can’t be broken. Family bonds. You understand. I wouldn’t want you to have different opinions of your father. He’s done well by your mother.”

It was there, below the surface, begging to brought into the open. Stacie could feel it between them, brewing like a great storm. One little flicker of interest and it would come out. And then things would change forever between Stacie and August Conrad. And with that she was sure the tentative and fragile bridge she and her mother were building.

But if she were really like her mother, Helene would understand why she was doing this. At least that is what she hoped if this all ever came to light. Stacie let out a soft sigh and leaned back. She couldn’t out right ask about it, it had to be done delicately. Edith watched her work through the knowledge that there was something going on that she hadn’t been aware of. It was a careful dance baiting the woman to reveal more than what Stacie herself had given.

“Well, whatever my father is or is not doing, it’s nothing I know about. He and Weston shared that in common.”

“Ah yes. Thick as thieves those two…”

There it was. The hook Edith thought she was dropping in the water. Stacie batted her eyes in mild confusion, ignoring the slightly predatory smile on the old woman’s face. Her lip pouted out just enough to give the impression that she wasn’t making the leap entirely. Stacie smiled inwardly as Edith swallowed her own lure.

“Mind you, I’m not saying August is a thief, he’s merely an opportunist you see. He’s very good at knowing who to know. It’s how he made his fortune through the years. Nothing illegal in it exactly. Most would say it’s a shrewd bit of business.”

“But I don’t see how that could help him benefit from Weston’s…activities. Of course, he knows everyone, he’s a politician.”

“Hm indeed, indeed. Of course, he wouldn’t be involved in any such thing. Strike it from your thoughts, my dear.” The woman brushed a hand over her knuckles, and not for the first time during the conversation. Aubrey probably would have called the tell earlier but Stacie was proud of herself for picking it up now. “In any case I am quite sure Senator Grant and Warren Randall would lean very heavily on your father if they felt he was in any way responsible for Weston stealing their money.”

Stacie’s heart beat double time but she rolled her shoulders casually in a shrug. Jackson Grant and Warren Randall were her father’s closest confidants, present at every family function since as far back as she could remember. Uncle Jack had even gifted her the first horse she had ever owned. They were, in a fashion, family.

“I haven’t seen Uncle Jack in a few years. Not since his son Kodie and I went to Senior Prom together.”

It hadn’t been her choice of date, and the argument that had raged in the Conrad home had lasted three intolerable days, she and her mother butting heads on everything from the color of her dress to the way she wore her hair. Kodie wasn’t a bad guy and truthfully, he hadn’t wanted to go the dance with her any more than she had with them. But it had been arranged years before the event was even due to take place. In the end they both dutifully took their places next to each other for pictures in the foyer before escaping to the limo to get happily drunk on the well-stocked wet bar.

“I had almost forgotten about the blush of young love. I was worried about that boy for a while. You heard they caught him awhile back in a house full of street whores and enough cocaine to give that Tony Montana character a seizure.”

Her brows came up at that. It seemed unlike the boy she had known but people changed and it took more strength to keep from breaking under the family pressure than perhaps Kodie had. She let her curiosity at the topic glimmer to the surface.

“A house full of…he was the perfect gentleman at prom. I can hardly imagine that scene.”

“Who can say what’s gotten into that young man. If Jackson hadn’t gotten him a job at the Port of Los Angeles, he’d probably be in an out of rehab facilities I imagine.”

She could tell by the way Edith waved a hand dismissively that Kodie wasn’t worth the energy to think on. Stacie lifted a shoulder casually giving it the appropriate gesture of disinterest that was expected. There wasn’t much more to gain from digging further. Eventually Edith would wonder why she was so eager to gossip about the families. It was better to go on to something everyone knew.

“Speaking of rehab, did you know Tristaan has a new line coming out now that he’s clean and sober? He plans to call it Clarity. I saw a sneak peek of some of the pieces and they are just gorgeous. You’d just adore the mother of pearl pin collection…”

The conversation shifted easily and she spent another hour enjoying the afternoon with Edith. She kept the tone of their topics light but her mind was turning over the information she’d gleaned. Stacie was willing to bet even money that Uncle Jack and Warren Randall were in on whatever Weston was into. Whatever business they had together scared Weston, enough to demand she empty her safe, liquidate assets…it was big. Big enough to ignore Weston’s predilection to torturing and murdering women. Stacie knew there was a bigger play on the table, she could feel it even if she couldn’t see it yet. They needed more information and she knew just which card to play. She waved one last time to Edith as she slid into the backseat of the SUV.

“Home?”

She gave Happy a distracted nod that the blonde smiled at before turning to put the car in gear. “Who do we know in drugs?”

Happy’s bright eyes cut to her quickly in the rearview mirror with curiosity. She was weighing the request to see if Stacie was joking or not. After a second she gave a delicate grunt and focused on the road.

“Depends on how much of what you’re looking for.”

“Enough cocaine to make Tony Montana have a seizure.”

This time the eyes panned up in a slow disbelieving arc. Stacie smiled widely and gestured to the street to remind the other woman to keep her focus where it needed to be.

“We might know a guy…”

“Good. Aubrey’s going to want to talk to him.”

“I’ll make it happen, boss.”

“Might want to make it quick,” Rory commented, her face serious. “Sunset’s happening a lot quicker than anticipated.”

Lou looked up, his eyes darting back and forth between Callie and Rory. “Like, how fast?”

“Fast,” Rory said. “Kristopher’s getting agitated. Sent Celene home from the bar early, and told Kodi to spread the word. It’s not like we can’t handle it, but I think he’s worried about…” Rory tried to disguise the small nod in Callie’s direction.

Lou turned his attention to Callie. “I’ve definitely got a spare mattress in a couple of the bunkers nearby,” he told her. “You are welcome to have one. They’re not in perfect condition, but they’re not too bad either. I promise you none of them will have fleas,” he laughed uncomfortably. “I can rally up a couple friends to help deliver it to your place before sundown, and I can have this finished for you tomorrow, if that’s alright with you.”

Callie couldn’t complain too much. She would sleep in her car if she needed to, although, as Rory mentioned, it was unlikely sleep would be on the agenda tonight. She could feel it too, her skin felt like tiny needles were poking into it all over her body. It was an uneasiness she couldn’t quite shake, and she would need to find someplace safe to change.

“That’s perfectly fine with me” she said. “I’m just thankful for the help, no matter how long it takes.”

Lou brought himself to full height. “I’ll go see who I can wrangle up. I assume your door’s unlocked. If you’re not back home yet by the time we get there, we okay to go right in?”

Callie nodded. She had barely unpacked anything, and she trusted Lou.

“Alright then,” he said. “It’s settled. I’ll catch with you in a little bit, Rory. And if I don’t see ya, Cal – be safe tonight.”

Both Callie and Rory waved as Lou bounded outside through a giant hole in the brick wall of the library. Rory jerked their head in the direction of the front door.

“Come on,” they said. “I’ll give you a quick tour of the town, and then we’ll get you home safe. We can meet up another time to properly introduce you to everyone.”

Callie followed Rory through the building. Rory clapped a hand on the shoulder of the man in the plaid shirt they had been speaking to before, who was now seated with a few others on a weathered old couch.

“Thanks for the heads up, Kodi,” they said, not bothering to look at him.

The man raised his hand into the air, waving half-heartedly. “See you in a bit, Ror.”

“You betcha!” Rory rolled their eyes and smirked a little.

Callie wanted to ask for more information, but suddenly felt a strange pang in her chest. She clutched at it and stopped abruptly. It took a moment to notice.

“You okay?” Rory asked.

Callie took a deep breath and held her hand against the spot. A moment later, it faded, but still pulsated somewhere near her heart. “Strange pain,” she gasped. “Not sure what it is.” Rory frowned. “Let’s forget the tour. Plenty of time for that later. I think its best you get home.”

Infamous by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Series: Chronicles of Nick, #3 Read time: 2 Days Rating: 4/5

The quote: “Not your prom date, Cay. Don’t want to be, neither.” “Have no fear. You’re too hairy for my tastes, Gautier. And no offense, you’re not pretty or sexy enough to change them.” Nick gaped. “Now that was just hurtful and mean. Why you want to hurt me in my tender place like that, cher? Don’t let this calm exterior fool you. I got feelings, too.” Kody laughed at them. “I swear, there are times when it seems you two are the ones dating, and I feel like the third wheel.” — Nicholas Gautier, Caleb Malphas & Nekoda Kennedy

Infamous. AKA that one book where Cay kicks a cop car to get himself arrested. Let's start with the time setting for Infamous. The prologue for Infamous picks up exactly where Invincible ended with Nick noticing the scar on Ambrose's hand and coming to the realisation of exactly who he is. But between the prologue and chapter one there is a year-long time jump. I didn't initially pick up on it, it's not partially well signposted. But Nick refers to himself as 15 and does note some of what has changed in the past year. The plot is this time revolves around cyberbullying, with the lovely Brynna caught in the centre. There is a lot more lore revealed notably the Malachai, Sephirii and the Primordial gods. There are some revelations as to why Nick and Adrian are as they are, more confirmation of things that were alluded to in previous books.

What makes this series is the characters and their dynamics. The Nick, Caleb and Kody quote that I've added is one of THE quotes of the CoN series, which I guess says a lot about them. There is this moment when Kody realises that Cay despite being stuck with Nick also really cares about him. Caleb and Kody might actually care about each other to a degree despite not knowing a lot about each other. We actually find out a bit about Cay's past here, at least hints of it. Honestly one of the biggest surprises was the dynamic between Caleb and Thorn. I really didn't know I needed that until I read it. Dev and Nick have smartassery in common but the way they communicate makes me smile, some of what Dev says is heartbreaking though if you know his past. Bobbi Jean Burdette is a badass woman, I'm guessing there is a lot more to that story yet. She has a lot in common with Cherise is a way both protective and caring for their sons. Nick and Wren fave the start of an unexpected sweet friendship if they both let it happen

While I did enjoy this is a book I had some issues with some of which can be explained by the time in which the book was written. While a little bit spoilerly this is a book that not only deals with cyberbullying but the real-world consequences of it. Which does lead to discussions of suicide and something akin to suicidal ideation (because the Ambrosius Malachai is different to others in relation to a specific circumstance). I dislike the way Sherri talks about suicide. It is clumsy and a bit ugly. It might reinforce some of the worst of society's perceptions of it. One character essentially guilt-tripping another even with the intent to save does not read particularly well. But I can't figure out how it could have been written is a way that wouldn't have been jarring to me. On a less serious note, there are some editing errors in the ebook version. Spaces where they shouldn't be, missing paragraph markers, missing quotes. All small things but it can be a bit off-putting.

After this friend got expelled, she went on to study magic at home under a private tutor (since no other schools would accept her out of fear that she’ll do the same incident again).

The memory of Berenice’s death always remained fresh in her mind; she couldn’t go a day without breaking down over the fact that she caused her death. She’s always searching for some way to reverse her spell/possible ways to raise the dead, just so Berenice could have the chance to live out the rest of the life that had been stolen from her. And since the friend’s out of a strict school schedule, she has more time to do this.

The friend eventually eventually does find a way to reverse the spell!!

However, it comes with some conditions. 

Some of these stipulations are like “the target subject’s body and soul should be tethered to one location” (that’s why Berenice can’t leave the school) and “this spell will end once the target subject has become content with the way they had lived. once this contentment is realized, they will be returned to their former state” (which is why Berenice can’t seem to die no matter what she goes through)

So the friend dies in the process, Berenice’s body and soul reunite at NRC, and here we have our ghost girl! 

Now, for Berenice’s attitude towards the student body... Keep in mind that, back then, she was your typical nice, hardworking girl with good grades and a sheltered home life.

So given the opportunity to go ape shit like she’s never done before, Berenice ramps it up to eleven the moment she wakes up at NRC.

Plus she still has some underlying resentment for the college and its students; always thinking about themselves and their reputation before anything else; always refusing to cooperate with each other beyond their dorms when things get rough

The fact that she used to act like that once too just adds fuel to the fire 

If she had a route in the game, it would center on the concept of moving on, I guess??? Just to put it simply?

Because, altho she doesn’t really talk about it, Berenice is very much stuck in the past (I kinda referenced it by giving her a technology dumb personality and floppy disk earrings; she’s quite literally an old soul)

And because she’s so stubborn about it, Berenice doesn’t believe that things will get better, that things will always remain the same at this godforsaken school until she can find a way out; and for a while, it really does seem that way 

And then enters the MC!!!  \(*'▽'*)/ Things start changing, and Berenice is amazed!!

But she can’t accept that the school and its students are changing so quickly, so she does everything she can to sabotage the MC’s efforts of good will 

She knows that these aren’t drastic changes, but she becomes worried that these small changes might end up snowballing into something else. And Berenice... just couldn’t rid the bitterness she held towards this campus’ history

Deep inside, maybe she didn’t really want the students to be reformed; she wanted to drag them down with her, into a never ending spiral of chaos and loss

And if it was this easy to change the school’s atmosphere, to change the students’ attitudes toward each other, why did it have to happen now? After Berenice’s and her friend’s time? What was so special about MC? 

It wasn’t fair. Couldn’t things just stay the way they always were? Or couldn’t they get worse like she expected them to? This wasn’t the Night Raven College she knew, and it scared her.

Maybe change was what Berenice was always afraid of... her fear of change forced her to conform to the expectations of the people around her, forced her to always focus on the periphery of her problems rather than confronting them directly

Even her past fear of death could be linked to her aversion to change; since death could be seen as a major shift between life on Earth and the afterlife/an end to life entirely

Speaking of people who couldn't make it, the Divas and Drummers were unable to make it for some reason, and have dropped out of the competition...Brett Loudermilk has filled their spot for tonight, which still leaves a vacant spot to bring somebody back in one of the next three weeks...Let's just say, I've already made my wildcard predictions, even though they weren't actually intending on any for this round...Also, this change of plans must have happened a while ago, since someone on the Wiki kept listing Brett for this week, even with the editors removing it...This was WELL before they announced that Divas and Drummers dropped out...

Despite the weird nature of the show, I guess I'll give them props for not USING props, and creating some pretty neat three-dimensional backdrops...Roberta really did look like she was trapped on an island with no means of escape...Well, in an overly-CG'd movie sort of way...

I also liked how the acts that WEREN'T there were able to get some pretty neat sets...It's almost like they're in a movie studio amusement park or something...

Anyway, let's gauge their qualities best we can...

11: Michael Yo. This is probably the first time in a while that a comedian on this show (not counting the ones that were quickly rejected...though on second thought, it might) failed to make me crack a smile even once! The jokes were the same old uninspired gender stereotype jokes I've heard from every hack comedian, and there's just something REALLY obnoxious about his whole “CAN I GET A WHAT-WHAT!?” delivery. I didn't like him last time either, but there were a FEW chuckle-worthy jokes in his audition...And yes, I feel bad saying these things, especially after hearing what he went through. I sympathize, and am glad that he recovered...But if he goes through tomorrow (and let's face it, he likely will), it's not for whatever laughs he brought (as few as those might have been) but the tears. And some of those tears are his own...(Not that he doesn't have REASON to be emotional, but he is VERY emotional, even by this show's standards...)

10: Shaquira McGrath. Without the upbeat fun of her audition, or the moving arrangement of her JC performance, this felt about as bland as any singer I've heard in the past...She also drowned herself out with the backing track and just didn't seem to have the confidence she showed before...She even had a boring set to compliment the boring performance (which is sad, since she was the first to perform on that stage, and the ones to come were much better...)

9: Roberta Battaglia. I guess she's in a similar position as Shaquira, as what made her stand out before was the Lady Gaga vocals...This song wasn't nearly as interesting, but I guess at the very least her singing was more consistent than Shaquira's...Are they really gonna push her to win this season? Because so far, I'm not quite sold on her...

8: Pork Chop Revue. “Lethargic dog act” sounds about right...I know they're hyping it up because “It's pigs instead of dogs! OMG!” But like I said before, pigs aren't really that hard to train...And none of the tricks were anything surprising...(At least their audition had that baby pig in the carriage...) Still cute, but I'd still say this act is the runt of tonight's litter, ready for the proverbial slaughter...It's gonna take more than a talented spider to save THEM...That'll do, pigs...That'll do...

7: Frenchie Babyy. There's a likability to Frenchie that makes me REALLY want to like his act...But in the end, I think he's suffering pretty much the same problem as Turf did: There's not much to the act aside from a guy doing weird things with his arms...He just looked lost in that elaborate 3D set, and there's only so much stage you can fill with just your arms...It's not like contortionists filling a stage is impossible; Strauss Serpent pulled it off (at least once), and that guy can pull off contortions that Frenchie could never even DREAM of! We'll just see if Howie's faith that he'll go through tomorrow is well-placed...

6: Simon and Maria. It's amazing what a fun set can do for an otherwise humdrum act...Not much to this performance that I haven't seen before from them, but throw in the diner set and the retro clothes, and something just clicks...I didn't love it, but I still had fun watching them, and I could tell they had fun performing...

5: Double Dragon. Similar case for these ladies, but even moreso! Their name may be a ripoff of an old-school arcade game, but they sure know how to put on a show! In a battle against that OTHER singing twin act with a name straight out of 80s martial arts works, sorry, but the Ninjas are no match for the Dragons!

4: Archie Williams. I'm starting to get Archie's charm. He may not be the best singer, but he is compelling to listen to...Do I support him potentially winning this whole thing? Not really...But I will wish him the best nonetheless!

3: Annaliese Nock. Sorry, Bello, but I can't count you for this performance...Nonetheless, like Simon Cowell, I wish you a good recovery! (Speedy too, but like I said, Simon doesn't need to rush it...) Anyway, it's funny how they talk about their previous appearances on this show, and yet never brought up that Bello performed this very same act in this very same round three years ago...I will admit...It was better when he did it...He was a LOT more nimble and probably had years of experience doing it, as opposed to Anna tripping at points and looking like it was much harder for her...But that still didn't stop it from being compelling to watch...Even when she tripped (or ESPECIALLY when she tripped), you just can't help but root for her to keep going! For that, it might have ended up better than it would have if both of them performed this stunt together...Either way, we'll see if they get the votes they deserve this time, but there's still some stiff competition (by which I mean there were quite a few acts that appeal to emotions more than raw talent...Though maybe they'll get sympathy votes for the accident...)

2: Brett Loudermilk. A mixture of sword swallowing, archery, magic and comedy! It's like he threw four separate acts into a blender, and this was the result! It looks like Sofia's gonna be a permanent fixture as his assistant, at least as long as he's competing in this game...I guess they work off of each other too well! And once again, funnier than the actual comedian tonight (without any offense to Michael, since I know he went through a lot lately). Him and his Pepto-Bismol hair have my vote!

1: Feng E. The sad thing is, Feng's probably not gonna get the votes he deserves, because he didn't receive the hype he deserves. I mean, second act of the night!? Really!? This was too awesome to be placed so early! No doubt there's a bias for which acts tend to get hyped over others, and innovative instrumentalists are never particularly high in the pecking order unless they have a sob story to milk for all it's worth...Though I will say that his Lego story is a story I would vote for! We'll just see how things turn out tomorrow, but with so many acts that the judges seem to like over him, and even in the child category he gets out-cuted by Roberta and Maria, it's not looking particularly hopeful for him...

January Round Up

The D.U.F.F. (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) - Kody Keplinger 

This book was a reread for me and rereading it reminded me how much I loved this book the first time I read it. The main character is Bianca Piper and her two best friends are a little different than her. They love going out, dancing, and care about how they look - Bianca doesn’t. She would rather sit next to a 30 year old “bar tender” (he sells soda to teenagers) than party with her peers. This character is written so well that if it was in the hands of a lesser writer, Bianca could be really annoying. There is this boy she goes to school with named Wesley and he is super hot but is a man-slut. One night at the teenager club (I forget the name of it), Wesley dubs Bianca the duff. Wesley stated that she is neither fat nor ugly but she was less attractive than her friends, who he wanted to get with at the time, and therefore is the duff of her friend group. This really upsets Bianca (as it should) and she throws her coke in his face. Side note: This is the only scene from the book that made it into the movie. The movie is not a representation of the book because it changes almost everything from the book by trying to add characters, change plot, change character personalities (one character in particular who is a nice guy in the book and it a total asshole in the movie). Back to the review: Home life is not so great for Bianca at the moment in time of the book and one day she kissed Wesley. Bianca tries to use physical pleasure to distract her from her problems and who better to do that with than the man-slut of the school. I loved this book the first time I read it but rereading it after I have had sex myself really makes me understand Bianca decisions a little bit more than when I read it the first time. I highly recommend this book, especially for those who ever feel like the odd man out. The characters learn some really good lessons by the end of the book that everyone should carry with them. 

The Last Black Unicorn - Tiffany Haddish 

I think Tiffany Haddish is hilarious and so is her book. It tells her life story through the good and the bad and shows that sometimes you have to laugh at the bad times because things will eventually get better. I listened to the audiobook which is read by Tiffany and highly recommend consuming this book in that manner if you want to read this book because you get all her inflections as if you were listening to one of her comedy shows. I recommend this book for those who like Tiffany Haddish.

Yes We (Still) Can - Dan Pfeiffer 

I listen to Pod Save America (crooked.com) and love listening to all the people on that podcast. Through being a “friend of the pod” I signed up to get this book for free and I did (I never win giveaways and I was so excited I won something). Dan Pfeiffer was senior advisor for strategy and communication to President Obama and wrote this book that depicts his time on the campaign, in the white house, and the presidential election of Donald Trump. It was a very interesting read. I recommend this book for anyone who is into politics. I also recommend going to crooked.com and see all their podcast and news articles. 

Shatter Me - Tahereh Mafi

Imagine a world where you couldn’t touch anyone, where any skin to skin contact can cause the death of a person, that touching someone gives you immense power while you drain the life out of another human being: That is the life of Juliette in the book Shatter Me. We first meet Juliette while she is in a mental facility that is more like a prison. Throughout the book, you find out that she is there because she accidentally killed a little boy when she was trying to help him from his abusive mother. The problem is she touched him, and that touch caused the death of that little boy. I will admit that this book has a little bit of a slow start and that I really didn’t get into it until a few chapters in. The thing that fascinated me the most is the backdrop of the world Juliette lives in. She lives in a world where the environment is completely destroyed, food is scarce, the weather fluctuates extremely, and life is very difficult to live. What really got me in the description of the environment is that its not to far from what will happen in the real world if we don’t reverse the man-made harm we have placed on our earth. Scientist have told us we have about 12 years to fix what we have done, yet we live in a world where we let corporations take charge and do what they want. No matter how green you are as an individual person, if the big corporations don’t also go green and fix the damage they have done, it will be all for nothing. While reading this book, I read it as a warning for what is to come if things don’t change and it was a very scary thought. By the end of the book, my first thought was that this was Juliette’s superhero origin story and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book.

Prompt 20 Two birds with one stone.

The Wildwood Conjurer had arrived at the Drowning Wench, eyebrows furrowing at Midlander. He certainly didn’t seem like himself, stubble on his face had grown a bit more, he looked disheveled, bags under his eyes meant he didn’t get much sleep if any. A concerned look over took her. “Is everything okay, Kodie?”

He shrugged as he took a swig of the large bottle of rum he had, holding the bottle afterward. “Eh, I’ve been better, but that’s not why we’re here...got what I needed?”

The elder Elezen continued the concerned look towards him, as she grabbed a rolled up missive from her satchel sliding it over the table towards Kodie. “Yes, this will allow you to get into the city, the guards will let you, and your expedition through with no questions asked….you do have an expedition right?”

The Midlander reached over to grab the permit, opening it up to read through the contents, shaking his head. “Nah, think I’m gonna handle it alone. Better off that way…”

The Elezen’s eyes widened at his answer. “Are you serious? You can’t go there alone, that’s too dangerous, too insane! Besides, do you don’t want your lover to worry…didn’t you give her the wristlet yet?”

Kodie was reading through the permit but then his eyes quickly darted upward towards the Conjurer. “Well I don’t have to worry about that anymore. I’m ridin solo at this point…” He took another long swig of his rum as he continued reading.

The Elezen frowning at the answer she was just given. “Oh...I’m sorry...Still, this you can’t go alone. You might not make it back…”

“Hey what’s this here?” He interrupted, it obvious he didn’t want to continue the previous subject, but thankfully there was a reason to change it. “If I find the correct tome, I’m supposed to surrender it to the Guild when I don’t have further use of it?”

She nodded in response, letting the previous subject go as well for his sake. “Correct, we do not want the tome to get lost and in the wrong hands. Once you’re finished, we will take it and store it away. This is the only condition of allow you into the lost city. Otherwise they will have to revoke the permit.”

“No offense to you, the guild or the Seedseer, but I ain’t to keen on giving you something you all are just gonna lock away. Who know what else these tomes might have..besides I don’t need a permit, I can sneak in there if I want to.”

“This is true, but doing so could risk angering the Elementals, not to mention you would be marked as an enemy of the wood by the Wailers and Quiver. I don’t want you to become an enemy of the groups your parents served. Besides, you get what you need from the book, and my people as well as the elements are happy. This works out for everyone.”

“Yeah except for my coin purse, I’m sure the tome would make me a nice chunck of gil.”

The Elezen snickered as she shook her head. “Like you need to worry about gil. I know well enough you’re doing more than great on that aspect. Now please tell me, what’s going on with you….I beg you don’t go there alone..”

The Midlander didn’t answer right away, instead chugging the rest of the bottle he had, and setting the empty container down, grabbing some gil as he set it on the table. “Don’t worry about me, no one should...I’ll get your book once I’m done with it.” He said as he stood up, holding the permit tightly in one hand as he walked off, a slight stumble along the way as it could be easily seen he had more than one bottle of rum.

All the conjurer could do was look with concern as he left the tavern. “Oh Eleena, something is very wrong with your son…please watch out for him...”

Personality: 

Tends to have delusions of the grandeur when it comes to imagining his ideal school life. A very expressive boy who wears his heart on his sleeve. As a result, he has significant trouble hiding how he feels, both on his face and through his actions. Due to his unique magic Kodi has a very weak presence compared to most people, and, although he’s eager to make friends with everybody, he mostly goes unnoticed by his peers. As with most Octivanelle students, he’s often tasked by Azul with one errand or another, but he manages to keep up a (mostly) optimistic attitude in spite of all his work. 

Will carry out any of Azul’s orders no matter how questionable they may seem, acting as a pawn to the dorm leader’s chess board by gathering info on other students around the school undetected. He’s a smart guy when it comes to academics, but since people like Azul and Riddle are in his grade, his ranking isn’t as high as he would want it to be. His common sense, however, is a different story.

Likes: Akashiyaki, tending to both animals and plants, anything that keeps him busy, basketball, art, buying new watercolor sets, aquariums, his friends, crossing things off his to-do list

Background: 

Despite being an Octavinelle student, Kodi grew up in an environment where most spent their days tending to the land: The Village of Harvest. The boy was a result of his mother having a romantic summer encounter with a cuttlefish merman on one of her rare trips to the beach, therefore his father wasn’t really in the picture when he was growing up. However, his mother didn’t hold any resentment towards his father, often speaking fondly of the man and the memories she held of him. 

He was raised by his mother and her family on a small farm in the area. Because of this, Kodi never really felt lonely when he was younger, having been surrounded by his many relatives most of his life. It is from them did he learn practical skills when it came to both farming and everyday life, such as how to take care of plants and animals, how to cook healthy meals, etc. The village in general was a tight knit and welcoming community, so it also wasn’t uncommon for Kodi and his cousins to play with the children of other families and even stay over for dinner at different houses once they ran out of steam. One of his best friends was Epel, whom Kodi happily regarded as a little brother figure since most of his cousins were older than him. 

As a child, Kodi was much more stoic than his current self, taking after his mother. It wasn’t as if he were shy or traumatized into being emotionally guarded, but rather it was physically difficult for him to show emotions. His face nor his voice would hardly change regardless of how strong of an emotion he was feeling. It was because of this did some of his peers think he was cold, especially when it came to situations that involved sympathy, but his personality didn’t hurt his reputation that much. 

It is only when his magical abilities began to kick in did Kodi notice a drop in attention being paid to him. Since his unique magic involved blending in with his surroundings, this caused his overall presence to become weaker as well.  Sometimes his friends would forget about him during their games (especially if they were playing hide and seek), other times his relatives would forget to set a plate for him at the dinner table; it wasn’t as if he was forgotten about completely, but these little hiccups really hurt his self esteem. It was because of this did Kodi begin to act out to get a little more attention, but he still went unnoticed. Eventually Kodi gave up and resorted to learning different ways to improve himself. He thought if he worked hard enough in a variety of areas, then surely he will get the recognition he deserves. Maybe he might even get lucky and get to go study at Night Raven College, becoming a famous magician after completing his studies at the magic school. He upped his athleticness by playing basketball with his cousins, created arts and crafts with Epel, and studied hard in school to pass his classes. 

When the carriage came to take him away to NRC, Kodi was overjoyed. Well, it didn’t really show on his face because, :/ y’know, but he was shaking a lot from excitement when they placed him inside his coffin.

He didn’t really think much of which dorm he wanted to be placed in. Despite having little to no expectations, Kodi couldn’t help but be a little surprised when he got sorted into Octavinelle. He was aware of his mother’s encounter with the merman, but he thought she was telling him some sugar coated story to explain the absence of his dad. In fact, he was still skeptical of his mother’s tale until he accidentally fell into the large tank just outside the dorm’s lounge after he was done feeding the fish. Having grown up in a place not near any large bodies of water, Kodi didn’t think he needed to know how to swim, and, boy, did he regret it as he sunk deeper and deeper into the water. He blacked out once he ran out of oxygen, but when he came to, Kodi found himself as a cuttlefish laying on the tank’s floor. It took him an embarrassingly long time to figure out how to turn back into human afterwards.

Kodi came in contact with Azul early in his first year since they had a lot of the same classes, as well as the same dorm, together. However, it wasn’t until the start of his second year did Kodi decide he'd had enough of being ignored and that he wanted to sign a contract with Azul to fix his circumstances. His exact wish involved being able to express his emotions more freely as he believed that was the root of his problem. Azul agreed to help him out so long as Kodi did him a little favor that would “better acquaint him with the students on campus”. Thinking nothing of Azul’s vague wording, Kodi accepted his offer and became the overly expressive boi he is today. In exchange, he was to gather information on all the students on campus and create a basic profile on each person that was to be put into a catalogue held by Azul, just so this octopus man knew the type of clients he was going to be dealing with. For the first time, Kodi felt what it was like for fear to contort his face. 

As of now, Kodi wears two mood bracelets around his wrists as physical proof of his contract. The bracelets change colors depending on what mood he’s in, but he tries to hide them under his sleeves out of embarrassment (you could still see how he feels on his face tho… (￣^￣) ). In addition to bending to Azul and the Leech brothers’ whims, he found himself helping out in a little smuggling business within the school, sneaking in certain outside goods that are hard to get on campus through a network of students. Kodi was assigned to deliver the packages in a secretive way, usually using his unique magic to his advantage. At first he was skeptical to join, but after being convinced that it wasn’t technically against school rules and that it wouldn’t take up much of his time, Kodi was on board with the idea. 

Kodi also tried to keep in touch with Epel once the latter joined NRC, but the first year often regards him with disdain, thinking he’s become less cool when he entered his second year. But they’re still decent friends and sometimes have lunch together when their schedules match up. Kodi has attempted to befriend Majid due to him being a first year like Epel, visiting Scarabia to have a chat with him every once and awhile. Majid initially tried to reject him, but eventually became placated when Kodi began to bring snacks he made whenever he came to visit. Kodi doesn’t know how to act around Berenice and is lowkey kind of scared of her since she’s part ghost. He still acts friendly enough towards her though.

(Side Note: I kinda came up with his story before playing Chapter 3, and I’m not entirely sure what would happen to Kodi after all of (･_･;) that happened with all of the other students’ contracts. If Kodi’s contract had the same fate, his mood bracelets would probably become inactivated and go back to those cheap ones you get at souvenir shops. Kodi would still be expressive as always, yet would go back to having his old RBF when he’s not thinking about anything in particular. Or we could pretend that his contract was forgotten about in the chaos (￣∇￣) continuing with the running theme of him being forgotten…).

Powers: 

Unique Magic (Hide-Away): This ability enables Kodi to seamlessly take upon the appearance of his surroundings, whether it involves becoming a part of the wall or a large potted plant. His generally weak presence enhances this ability as well. He has tried to imitate the appearances of other people, however, his unique magic doesn’t seem to accomodate for that type of mimicry. :’) Back to being a part of the wall he goes.

Cuttlefish Transformation: Due to being a quarter cuttlefish, he can only become fully human or fully cuttlefish. There is no in between. Gets kind of jealous whenever he sees Jade and Floyd switch into their merman forms during their visits to The Sea of Corals. Sometimes customers can catch a glimpse of cuttlefish Kodi swimming around the huge tank in Mostro Lounge, testing out his recently discovered form. 

Stunning Hypnosis: Doesn’t really use this ability until he’s forced to. Whenever Kodi finds he’s in a tough situation, he can make his eyes mimic the hypnotic light show cuttlefish would normally display on their skin, his irises quickly shifting between different colors as he does so. This ability temporarily stuns his victim for about one to five minutes, giving him enough time to do whatever he needs to do.   

Trivia: 

He had curled all his hair for his high school debut, but somehow half of it got flattened during his time in the coffin on his way to NRC. Kodi tried to frantically fix it before the entrance ceremony in the bathroom until a random upperclassman complimented his “daring” hairstyle. He was so flattered that he kept doing his hair like that for the rest of the year. 

Both Jade and Floyd tend to tease him about him not being able to turn into a merman. It didn’t bother him that much until they started tossing him around in his cuttlefish form like some terrified beach ball on one of their ocean visits. 

Was tempted to join the Magishift club at first but decided otherwise when he fell off his broom in the first meeting. No one noticed, but he was embarrassed all the same. Switched over to the basketball club because he was more familiar with the sport. (*wheeze* kodi no basuke) 

The shirt he wears with his Octavinelle uniform was given to him by his grandmother, saying that he would look so nice and sophisticated wearing it at school; he was personally reluctant to take it at first, but you can’t say no to grandmama

He so desperately wants to be relied upon that he’s willing to do almost anything to gain others’ respect; this often leads him to being a huge pushover tho

Can be scarily protective over the people he cares about; works from the background to make sure offenders get some kind of karma for what they’ve done

A good majority of his peers and upperclassmen who he knew in his first year became genuinely concerned when Kodi did a complete 180 in his second year; some worried he hit his head the wrong way and offered to take him to the hospital; others just gradually  accepted this new Kodi; besides, it’s nice to see a huge smile finally cross his face when he gets excited about something for once
