Gentleman Monster: How Remus's Marginalisation and Comparitive Privilege Made Who He Is

Marginalised and subjucated groups in the Wizarding world have largely very different response to their status. It is most often, anger. We see it multiple times with goblins:

Griphook gave a nasty laugh.

"But it is, it is precisely that! As the Dark Lord becomes ever more powerful, your race is set still more firmly above mine! Gringotts falls under Wizarding rule, house-elves are slaughtered, and who amongst the wand-carriers protests?"

In werewolves:

"I cannot pretend that my particular brand of reasoned argument is making much headway against Greyback's insistence that we werewolves deserve blood, that we ought to revenge ourselves on normal people."

Despair, in house elves:

"Ah, if Harry Potter only knew!" Dobby groaned, more tears dripping onto his ragged pillowcase. "If he knew what he means to us, to the lowly, the enslaved, we dregs of the magical world! Dobby remembers how it was when He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named was at the height of his powers, sir! We house-elves were treated like vermin, sir! Of course, Dobby is still treated like that, sir," he admitted, drying his face on the pillowcase.

Remus's position is interesting, in that he is both exposed to the bigotry his kind is subjected but is also in large parts, protected from it. Here is a piece of dialogue Cat brought to our attention:

'I'm sure they'd never go over to You-Know-Who,' said Mr. Weasley, shaking his head. 'They've suffered losses too; remember that goblin family he murdered last time, somewhere near Nottingham?'

'I think it depends what they're offered,' said Lupin. 'And I'm not talking about gold. If they're offered the freedoms we've been denying them for centuries they're going to be tempted. Have you still not had any luck with Ragnok, Bill?'

Remus uses the word 'we', when in fact, he himself has been oppressed by the wizarding community. He doesn't say 'the wizarding world', he puts himself in the focus even when he isn't part of the problem when it comes to being the oppressor.

Remus sees himself as an oppressor because he is human, but he also sees himself as a monster because of his lycanthropy.

This dual identity is further embodied by how he refers to himself in Deathly Hallows:

"You have only ever seen me amongst the Order, or under Dumbledore's protection at Hogwarts! You don't know how most of the Wizarding world sees creatures like me! When they know of my affliction, they can barely talk to me! Don't you see what I've done?"

When Remus is being distant from the issue at hand, an outsider looking in - he identifies as a "human" and clubs himself among the oppressor, however, the more anguished or emotional he gets, he gets closer to his emotional truth: "creature". Remus has two fractured identities that he constantly moves in between.

His comparitive privilege from rest of the werewolves who are shunned from society, who live on margins, stealing and killing to eat, is due to his association with Dumbledore and the Marauders.

In his anguish in DH, he tells Harry and his friends that their view of him is highly coloured by Dumbledore's protection, who gave him both education and a job when no one else would. We see him making a similar comment about James:

'But you are normal!" said Harry fiercely. "You've just got a--a problem--"

Lupin burst out laughing.

"Sometimes you remind me a lot of James. He called it my 'furry little problem' in company. Many people were under the impression that I owned a badly behaved rabbit."

While his dialogue surrounding marginalisation is either passive or dry around the Order ("an occupational hazard of being a werewolf"), he does allow himself to get angry about what he faces around Sirius:

"I know she is a nasty piece of work though - you should hear Remus talk about her," said Sirius. (In reference to Umbridge drafting an anti werewolf legislation)

Remus being loved by his family and the radical acceptance of his condition by his friends is a very huge part of his character - because it allows him to experience his "monstrosity" in a way that he believes is safe (even while it is highly dangerous and irresponsible).

He appoints James and Sirius as his protectors:

'Sirius and James transformed into such large animals, they were able to keep a werewolf in check."

And they did, they protected him from consequences of their dangerous jaunts and there were many "near misses". However, this allows him to be a teenager in a way that he knows he normally wouldn't have been able to be:

"We were young, thoughtless -- carried away with our own cleverness."

Around the Marauders, there is an integration of his wolf and human selves, which would explain why Remus feels comfortable expressing negative emotions like anger around his friends, when he normally he wouldn't to anyone else:

'My body was still wolfish, but my mind seemed to become less so while I was with them'

We know that what is offered to him here is unique kind of acceptance, the one he doesn't even get with his fellow werewolves - as he "bears unmistakable signs of having tried to live among wizards" and they find it "difficult to trust him", not to speak of the regular bigotry he faces from wizards.

And because of this comfort he receives from them, and a sense of integrated identity around them when he has to move between two fractured selves among wizards and among werewolves, it also informs his flaw: allowing his friends to get away with what he objectively knows is wrong.

Remus' comparitive privilege from who he calls his "fellow equals" also has resulted in internalising the messaging from the wizarding world, which feeds his self loathing rather than the righteous anger we see other subjucated magical creatures display.

This self loathing informs his tendency to avoid intimate relationships in his adulthood: "I am too poor, too old, too dangerous"/ "Don't you see what I have done to my wife and child? I have made her an outcast!"

Long story short: Remus' permeable identity issues (moving between 'human' and 'wolf' selves), why exactly he is loyal to his friends' secrets even when they are long dead cause very interesting internal conflict/ tension in him to explore.

First of all, thank you so much💗💗

I’m very VERY tired, so this made me very happy🦭✨

And now, okay lemme think…

I feel like Hermione would vibe with Iida 100%, like there’s no doubts there. RIP 1-A cause now they’re gonna have 2 Iidas watching them. Mina would probs try to “girly” Hermione up and have a friendship with her cause Hermione would remind her of a gentle Bakugou who just needs help to loosen up and have a rad time. And I think she’d get along with Momo too, but I also think that Momo would overthink stuff or be insecure around her sometimes, and vice versa.

Speaking of ✨insecure people✨, Ron would for sure get along with Momo, sorta like the way her and Denki do. Speaking of, Denki and his whole gang would totally buddy up with Ron (and Harry, they’re a packaged deal). Next we got Sato cause he can bake, and for sure Ron would start a friendship with him by asking “Do you know how to bake ____? What about ____?” I mean, I KNOW I WOULD. Midoriya and Ron would also for sure get along. I mean this in the nicest of ways, but Midoriya sorta reminds me of Dobby to an extent, and Ron and Dobby were so wholesome💗

Harry my boy, this man would get along with Sero 100%. He’s super laid back and funny, legit just like Ron. Lol, they’re even both tall and gangly, what a cowinkidink. Next is Mina, since she reminds me of Ginny in a way, so I can see them getting along. And as I said before, basically Sero, Mina, and the gang would buddy up with Harry (and Ron). Oh, and Harry would for sure get along with Jirou cause they’re both pretty chill, but living it up with the sass/snark.

I don’t think Harry would like Bakugou at first, but later not mind him. Who knows, maybe even like him.

Ron and Bakugou would fight constantly. No doubt. But would they hate each other? Nah.

Hermione and Bakugou would probs be fighting for number one in anything, tbh.

Side note: Kirishima would go out of his way to make sure Ron’s insecurities disintegrated.

Side note part 2: Kirishima and friends remind me of Harry and his gryffindor buds, which I feel is another reason why I see them all getting along.

My family is one of the old blood families. We were one of the few families that were still truly Pure-Blood. Everyone knew my Father was a Death Eater, but some people didn’t seem to care as much as others. That being said, I was a little nervous when my brother and I were going to Hogwarts. We were sure to be put in Slytherin like everyone else had been, but I was just scared of what everyone would think of our family. I wasn’t like my family, I never cared about blood status, but they were still my family. If anyone spoke bad about them Draco and I would rain hell on them.

The trip to Hogwarts was long, but I spent it with my brother and some family friends. While we were waiting before the sorting began Draco got into a small altercation with the great Harry Potter. That’s when I noticed a girl near Harry and she was very cute. I snapped out of that thought when we were brought into the great hall and started getting called up for sorting. Draco and I of course got into Slytherin and I noticed the girl got put in Gryffindor. My parents would hate if I got with a Gryffindor.

As the years went on I found out that that Gryffindor girl was a Mudblood as my family would say. That didn’t stop me from falling for her. She spent a lot of her time in the library as did I, but not just to study. I was infatuated by her. She was what my heart wanted more than anything in the world. We started talking when I asked her to help me study. She was wary at first since I am a Malfoy, but quickly realized I didn’t want trouble. That became our time. Three times a week we would study, but it usually ended up with us just talking.

“You’re so unlike your brother.” She said one day and I smiled at her.

“I don’t understand hating Muggle-borns.” I shrugged.

“But doesn’t your family hate you because of that?” She asked.

“They don’t know. My parents would surely disown me, possibly kill me.” I sighed.

“That’s awful.” She said with a frown.

“As long as I keep it a secret until I move out everything will be fine.” I said and she nodded.

Weeks later, Hermione and I were in the library again and we were talking about the Yule Ball. I so desperately wanted to ask her to go with me, but Draco was going to be there and he would tell our parents. I’d rather not die quite yet. So I went with one of my Slytherin friends and watched the girl of my dreams dance with a bloody idiot. However when it started getting late I found her on the stairs with an upset expression. It hurt my heart and I noticed no other Slytherins around so I walked up and sat next to her.

“You alright?” I asked.

“Fine, Ron just ruined a perfectly good night.” She sighed.

“Weasley is a bloody idiot.” I said and she nodded.

“You and Krum seemed to be enjoying the ball.” I said.

“There was hardly any conversation.” She laughed and I smiled.

“Well, I’d be glad to make up for his lack of brains.” I said and she smiled back.

“I suppose it wouldn’t hurt staying up a bit longer.” She said and my smile grew. I grabbed her hand and pulled her along to my favorite hiding spot in the castle. We each took a seat across from each other and started talking about whatever came to mine.

“There is no way Potter did that!” I laughed.

“I swear.” She laughed. That laugh that made my heart skip a beat. I’m not sure what came over me, but I leaned in and kissed her. She was shocked, but didn’t pull away.

“I-I’m so sorry.” I said when I pulled away, I was just as shocked.

“I should probably go…” I said standing up, but Hermione grabbed my hand and stopped me. I looked back down at her and she had a smile on her face.

“I was hoping you’d be the one to ask me to the ball.” She said and I blushed.

“I wanted to, but Draco and other people that know my family were there and I’d rather my Father not kill me.” I said and she nodded.

“I understand.” She said letting go of my hand and stood up.

“But, that doesn’t me we can’t have secret dates and see where things go.” I said and she smiled.

“I’d like that.” She said and I pecked her lips.

“I’ll see you in the library tomorrow night.” I whispered and quickly made my way back to the dungeons.

Hermione and I quickly entered an exclusive secret relationship. But things changed when I was forced into becoming a Death Eater. She didn’t know, but I kept away from her. I knew it would hurt her, but I couldn’t risk her life, especially with the Dark Lord returning. I didn’t see her again until my aunt had called Draco and I down to check and see if a person they brought in was really Harry Potter. I knew as soon as I saw Hermione and Ron that it was and Draco knew too, but he said nothing. I thought everything would be alright, until my aunt went crazy. She grabbed Hermione and my heart clenched. She held her to the ground asking about some sword they had, but she didn’t like the answers Hermione was giving her. So my aunt pulled out her knife and started carving Mudblood in her arm. I tried so hard not to do anything, but I couldn’t, not when she was screaming in horrible pain.

“Stop it!” I screamed and everyone looked at me.

“She deserves it! Filthy Mudblood.” Aunt Bellatrix growled.

“No she doesn’t, get off her!” I shouted.

“Y/N! Why on Earth are you defending a Mudblood?” My Father asked with anger clear on his face.

“Because…” I said, but just stared at Hermione.

“Merlin, you love her!” Draco said and I glanced at him then back at Hermione.

“You what!?” My Father growled.

“Then Y/N/N, you should be the one to finish this.” Aunt Bellatrix said with a wicked smirk.

“No!” I shouted with wide eyes.

“If you don’t, then you’ll die.” She said and I gulped. I didn’t want to die.

“Up to you.” She said, holding out her knife. I looked down at Hermione and shut my eyes tightly. I walked up to my Aunt and grabbed the knife.

“Good girl.” She said with a smirk. I walked over to Hermione and she stared at me with such fear. I kneeled down and hovered the knife over her arm.

“Please!” She begged. I quickly pulled out my wand and pointed it at my Aunt.

“Crucio!” I shouted and my Aunt’s screams filled the room. I grabbed Hermione and pulled her up and pulled her close to me.

“Y/N! Stop this now!” My Mother screamed. I saw Harry and Ron run up the stairs and they stared at me in shock. Suddenly our old house elf Dobby appeared and Hermione pulled me to him, making me break focus on the curse. A small fight started, but ended with me leaving with Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Dobby.

“You saved me.” Hermione said when we landed on the beach.

“I’ll always save you.” I whispered and kissed her.

“Guys.” Ron whispered and we looked over to see Harry holding a bleeding Dobby.

“I want to bury him, no magic.” Harry said while crying. Hermione started crying and clung to me.

“Everything will be alright.” I whispered to her as I stroked her hair.

“I’ll keep you safe.” I said and kissed her head.

Why I Can’t Read the Harry Potter Series the Same Way Anymore

(I know this is different from the stuff I usually post on this blog but… frankly I wrote three pages to vent about this and I wanted to publish it somewhere so just bear with me.)

So, I know what this looks like. However, this is not because of the… real life misgivings of J.K. Rowling. As a trans person myself, yes, she is transphobic. Also, she lies about what her books actually contain to seem more progressive than she actually is, like claiming Hermione was always black when she was described and pictured as white in the books and then played by Emma Watson in the movies that Rowling was personally involved with the production of. But that’s not what I’m here to argue because frankly, that’s an old argument and while it does taint my view of the author, it’s not what taints my view of the books.

I should preface this with this: I don’t hate Harry Potter. I read all the books and watched all the movies. I was an active fan of the series for a long time and I still enjoy the world and the characters. Heck, I still sort my friends and characters into Hogwarts houses for the fun of it. However, overtime, some of my issues with this series have started to weigh on my mind more and more as I’ve gotten older. I mentioned the Hogwarts Houses, which while it’s fun to sort characters outside of Harry Potter into these houses, the way they’re handled in the series is lazy at best and problematic at worst. First off, nearly every good character is in Gryffindor, while Slytherin is almost entirely made up of villains. Gryffindor is the designated good house where all the “brave” people go when barely anyone there actually embodies the house traits, besides Neville, Hermione, and maybe Harry. If you wanted a variety of personalities in one place, maybe you shouldn’t have made your sorting system based on personality!

In fact, here’s a whole list of characters who should not be in Gryffindor:

-Ron Weasley (Hufflepuff. He’s super loyal to the point where him leaving his friends in the final book felt out of character)

-Fred and George Weasley (Slytherin, they are some of the most ambitious, cunning characters in the whole series. Opening a joke shop IS an ambition and is a great example of a non-evil ambition.)

-Ginny Weasley (Also ambitious with her Quidditch to the point of spending years sneaking out to practice on a broom before she attended Hogwarts.)

-Percy Weasley (Ambition is his whole thing. He’s even a darker side of ambition. Him coming back to his family would be more meaningful if he were a Slytherin!)

-Dumbledore (Ravenclaw or Slytherin. He manipulated the ever-loving hell out of Harry, which I’ll get to, and is known as clever, wise, and a little eccentric. Either house could’ve been a better fit for him than Gryffindor.)

-Hagrid (Either Hufflepuff or Slytherin. Hufflepuff seems like the best fit for his current personality but Slytherin makes the most sense considering his backstory and history with Tom Riddle. The SuperCarlinBrothers made a really good video explaining this called “What House Was Hagrid in.” Go watch that.)

Leading into my next issue with the Hogwarts Houses, I have a serious issue with how Slytherin house is represented.

This has been said multiple times but the fact that every single Slytherin in the series is either evil (Voldemort, Bellatrix), assholes (Draco, Snape), morally gray (Slughorn, Regulus Black), or not in the core seven books (Albus Potter, Scorpious Malfoy, and Merlin), is extremely problematic. It makes the line between good and evil incredibly obvious and clear cut, with hardly any effort to blur those lines. The closest thing we got, especially in the author’s eyes, was Snape, who was not redeemed. He just wasn’t. He was a bully to his students, emotionally and physically, to the point where Neville’s biggest fear was him, and yet it’s suddenly all okay because he was in love with Harry’s deceased mother? That’s not how this works. His actions are not suddenly all okay because of that and frankly, he didn’t do enough to warrant saying he redeemed himself, besides indirectly letting Harry know that he needed to die to defeat Voldemort through the memories in the Pensieve, which just isn’t enough. Draco had more of a redemption and frankly proved he had good in him, yet we never got a true redemption from him because apparently all Slytherins are evil. Sure, there is a total of… one evil Gryffindor: Peter Pettigrew, who is pretty awful, but is there a single fully good Slytherin? No, they’re all either assholes, dabbled with evil, or are full on evil. Not only is it basic black and white morality, but it’s also downright harmful. The kids are sorted into their houses by their personalities and values. Some of the Slytherin traits are ambition, cunning, cleverness, resourcefulness, and leadership qualities, all pretty positive traits. The thing that divides these houses are their traits and values, so this is sending a message that traits such as “ambition,” “cleverness,” or “resourcefulness” are bad or evil, when they’re not. This is especially problematic when you remember that there is an official Wizarding World quiz that sorts you into a Hogwarts house based on your personality and likes and one of the houses you can get is this designated evil house. So if kids take this quiz and get Slytherin, they’re going to be disappointed and possibly think they’re evil. I’m especially annoyed at “ambition” ALWAYS being represented as a negative trait. That’s not just a Harry Potter problem but it still bothers me. Having aspirations and the guts to pursue them is not a bad thing, having evil aspirations is a bad thing. Ambition is a purely neutral trait, it can be positive or negative depending on what you’re pursuing yet it’s only ever shown as a “villain” trait.

This series tries to tackle racism… and it didn’t do it well. At all. It didn’t even tackle racism itself, it used elements of its magical world as an allegory for racism and these allegories just don’t work. The two that are most well-known are the wizard/muggle tension and the house elves as a whole. The pureblood purists are essentially an allegory for white supremacists, which has some troubling implications since wizards are literally genetically superior to muggles. Even if it’s not an objective fact, the books do imply that wizards are better than muggles from the story alone so this racial allegory doesn’t work when you’re saying one side is more powerful or better! The house elves are even worse. Their entire species is enslaved to these “genetically superior wizards.” In fact, if I remember correctly, house elves are enslaved mostly by rich pureblood families like the Malfoys and the Crouch’s, similar to slavery in the real world. But apparently, the house elves are happy to be enslaved (besides Dobby, who died) and were insulted when Hermione tried to free them. Winky in particular was horrified when she was freed by her master, treating it like a horrible punishment. Surely I don’t have to say how messed up that is.

Finally, my biggest problem with the Harry Potter series and the main reason I can’t stomach reading or watching them anymore, is the treatment of Harry himself. Harry was abused by the Dursleys. This is not me reading too into the book of reinterpreting anything, this is what is told to us directly. Harry is thin from being underfed in the first book, was forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs for eleven years, is frequently yelled at and berated by the Dursleys, heck Petunia and Vernon practically encourage their son to beat up Harry and frequently show favoritism to Dudley over Harry to an absurd degree. They make it clear to Harry that they don’t want him there. They also lock him in his room in the second book, literally boarding up the window and not letting him leave, passing him soup cans under the door. And all of this is just off the top of my head. Dumbledore left Harry in this environment. Dumbledore is fully aware of how Harry is being treated. Harry’s acceptance letter into Hogwarts literally has the address “the cupboard under the stairs” written on it. Yet they leave him in this physically and emotionally abusive and neglectful environment because the Dursley’s treatment somehow humbled him and made him the hero the wizarding world needed. Let me repeat that loud and clear: Harry is a hero because he endured abuse. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. NO. I don’t care what your justification is, it is never a good thing to leave a child in an abusive situation. You are not good or noble or heroic or anything for staying with people who hurt you. And it’s not just Dumbledore. I understand that Harry living with Sirius wasn’t much of an option with him on the run from Azkaban and then dying in book 5 but what about the Weasleys? Why do they let him return to the Dursleys when they know full well what he’s going through there after Fred, George, and Ron bust him out? Oh yeah, he can’t leave because Lily’s love spell protects Harry when he’s in a blood relative’s house. He doesn’t have any other choice. This is a lazy excuse from the story to justify Harry staying with his abusers and frankly, doesn’t even work since he’s constantly trying to avoid his house, a pretty common response to domestic abuse by the way. So it’s not “protecting” him, even by that stupid logic. Harry was left with and forced to return to the Dursleys year after year solely because he’s the chosen one and needed to be put through hell because abuse apparently molds people into heroes and if Harry was even a little arrogant, he wouldn’t be a hero. And he wouldn’t have been prepared to die to Voldemort to destroy the horcrux in him. The story is framed in a way that glorifies Harry for being abused and I despise it. Dumbledore used Harry as a tool to defeat Voldemort, never taking his feelings into account and he’s just forgiven for all of this in the end. Everyone says Harry shouldn’t have named his kid after Snape? What about Dumbledore? Harry basically named his child after two of his biggest tormentors. It sickens me. It’s like the series is supporting and glorifying abuse, even if that wasn’t the intent of the author (and I doubt it was, since she was abused herself) that is how it feels. So yeah, I can’t really enjoy Harry Potter anymore the way I used to.

(On a side note, I hate “destiny” stories and Harry Potter is a good example of a terrible destiny themed story. Harry didn’t have a choice in anything. He was just forced into this scenario and twisted by the plot to be what it “needed” him to be, having no agency of his own. Great inspiring hero. -_-)

FUCKING batshit & completely off the wall for them to be doing, literally even if that girl published her defense of him in a nationwide magazine or something, literally even if she's a journalistic "name" a layperson would recognize (I know, all the really credentialed people are covering REAL news right now, but for sake of pretending lol). and I can't blame the PR team, they're doing their jobs, and tbh as long as depp or his agents/management still have the money to pay them + he keeps imploding his social & professional life, they'll be in business a loooooong time.

but holy shit, the lengths they're having to go to to raaaake the barren fields of public opinion for a single credible-sounding turnip of defensibility from an author who doesn't come across as desperate to do a line of coke off that man's dick means it's clearly not easy money by a long shot.

add onto that the recent news that favors mads mikkelson for depp's harry potter replacement... depp filmed only one scene, but has a pay-or-play contract, so wb choosing to recast in and of itself is not even just, "I'd rather pay you to go away than deal with your personal shit," but, "you are such a professional LIABILITY that paying you a full salary, finding someone new to pay a full salary to, and postponing our ROI on a harry potter film for at least a full year, during covid, still puts us financially AHEAD so long as we don't have to mention you in press, promotion, or credits ever again moving forward."

and then additionally, you have the fact that like. okay. they could've gotten colin farrell back, right? but even though he's also under contract at wb, he's doing the batman. and while wb accommodated ezra miller doing fantastic beasts and justice league reshoots at the same time when whedon took over from snyder. depp's departure is so much more of a clusterfuck in advance, more of a clusterfuck than joss whedon, the snyder cut, everything, that I haven't even seen any buzz to suggest they'd consider disrupting another wb project to bail this one out the way they've literally done before, even though it could protect that hp continuity... they would rather pull a terrence howard to don cheadle complete clean break than let depp fuck with two movies to save his face.

all of which is to say. the extent to which he is FUCKED right now is genuinely hilarious because it is truly all his fault. and his PR people aren't miracle workers, so the fact that they're stuck on damage control vs image rehabilitation means he is also unwilling to "lose," even though rich white men have mastered the art of failing upward... depp would rather condemn himself to angry, drunken, BROKE obscurity while unfortunate employees somewhere are tasked with googling fan blogs, than lift a single finger to pull himself out of the hole he dug & now sits in the bottom of.

he could pull himself back into enough of the right people's good graces with a few well-placed social dobby pussy "indulgences" & enough public performances of remorse, but depp would rather drink his way through his cash & sue his ex-wife for hers to try to get a cut of that aquaman money & punish her for leaving him, and for shaming him in the process, when he was the one who wouldn't let her leave or live in peace.

and in a true, classic abuser move, depp would ultimately rather destroy his own life in the vain hopes of taking a much younger woman he couldn't intimidate, possess, and control down with him; metaphorically continuing to smear his own blood on glass & screaming "look what you made me do" even while more of his friends and allies turn away than rightfully abandoned joe exotic, and who, god willing, will leave him to face the brink alone, until he re-evaluates who he will choose to be as a person when he realizes he will never get to live out his fucked up fantasy of degradation and revenge, and that he is no one's tragic hero.

Another Wattpad request. I do not own ANY Harry Potter characters. They are the property of J.K.Rowling.

Warnings: Fluff, brief, non-descriptive mentions of torture (Bellatrix is involved).

Pairings: Draco Malfoy x reader

You were the one good thing Draco had in his life at the moment. You were his happiness. When he had to cast a Patronus, times with you were Draco’s happy memory. So when his mother agreed to letting you visit during your break from Hogwarts, Draco jumped at the chance to spend time with you, especially since the Dark Lord hardly stayed at the manor anymore.

Draco was lying in bed, not sleeping as usual, when he heard the soft knocking. “Draco?” He smiled at the sound of your hushed voice before he beckoned you to come in. “Can’t sleep?” You shook your head. Draco scooted over and lifted the sheet, silently inviting you into his bed. You didn’t need any further persuading. You were by his side in an instant.

You sighed in content, making Draco laugh softly. His fingers instantly began to trace patterns on your back. “I like this,” you muttered, “Away from all the fear and panic. In our own little bubble.” Draco’s fingers stopped for a moment before they continued. You knew exactly what he and his family were, but you never held it against him and he didn’t have the courage to ask you why.

"So do I, Y/N. I-I love you.“ You looked up at him and smiled. "I love you too.” Draco pulled you a little bit closer and held you just a little tighter. You were right when you said you were in your own little bubble of happiness. Draco wanted to stay in that bubble as long as possible before returning to reality. Outside of his bedroom, Draco had to be that sneering bully everyone thought he was. Only you got to see the real Draco. The seventeen year old boy who was scared for the future. "So, since we both can’t sleep, how about we just talk? I know something is bothering you.“ Draco sighed as his kissed the top of your head. He knew how much you loved it.

The two of you remained like that for hours. You tucked into Draco’s side, his fingers running up and down your spine as you talked about your worries and concerns. You talked about anything and everything under the sun until you both finally drifted off to sleep. It truly was one of the only ways Draco could fall asleep now; you being in his arms.

You had no idea how long you slept, but you woke up to the sound of Draco talking to someone. Your eyes fluttered open and you smiled at the house elf who was setting down a tray of what you assumed was breakfast. Draco turned to you and smiled. "Morning. Or afternoon rather.”

"Afternoon. Breakfast in bed?“ Draco nodded, bringing the tray over and sitting back down next to you. You gave him a quick kiss on the lips before turning your attention to the food. "What are your plans for the day?” you asked in between bites. Before Draco could answer, there was a knock on his door. You weren’t technically supposed to be in his room, but you didn’t have time to hide either. The door burst open and Narcissa stood there breathless. Her eyes met yours for a brief moment and you could see the disapproval in them. It didn’t last long however before she turned back to Draco.

"Draco, you’re needed downstairs. Dress quickly.“ With furrowed brows, Draco rose from the bed. "I’ll go. Meet you at the stairs?” Draco nodded, prompting you to leave and dress as well. You met up with Draco who looked tense and frightened. You gently took his hand and gave it a squeeze. It would be the last time you’d be allowed to touch him. His aunt wasn’t fond of any type of physical affection.

You followed silently after Draco. “Draco, there you are!” Bellatrix exclaimed. “Draco, this is important. Look.” You followed Bellatrix’s gaze to the prisoner in front of her. To you there was no doubt that it was none other than Harry Potter. Granted, you were closer to Harry than Draco would have liked.

"Is is him? Is it Potter?“ Bellatrix asked. Only then did you realize you had tuned out of the conversation. Your eyes flickered to Draco. Draco discreetly met your gaze for a moment. "I-I can’t tell. Sorry. It might be him. But it might not.” Bellatrix and Lucius both looked infuriated. Lucius rolled up his sleeve anyway, prepared to call the Dark Lord. “Father, is that wise? We are already in trouble with the Dark Lord as it is. If we call him here for nothing, he will be angry.”

You wanted to smile and cheer for Draco. You didn’t know why he hadn’t turned Harry in, but you were proud of him. He really was the Draco you knew underneath all the fear and forced obedience. You hadn’t noticed Bellatrix staring at you. “What about you? Y/N, isn’t it?” You jumped a bit at the sound of your name being spat out.

"Do you recognize this boy as Potter?“ She grabbed your arm and dragged you closer. From the corner of your eye, you could see Draco trying to keep his cool. You were forced to look down at a swollen-faced Harry. Clearly someone had hit him with a jinx. "Is. It. Potter?!” Bellatrix shouted, making you jump again.

"I really don’t know. It’s hard to tell, isn’t it? It’s possible it’s him. Or it could be someone else.“ Bellatrix scoffed before pushing you away toward Draco. "Return to you breakfast, Draco. Y/N,” Narcissa ordered softly. As Draco lead you away, you heard Ron’s screams for Bellatrix to leave Hermione alone.

Those screams followed you all the way back to Draco’s room. As soon as you were sure you wouldn’t be heard, you turned to Draco. “You didn’t tell them that was Harry. Why?” Draco just shrugged, but you weren’t going to let him off that easy. You placed a gently hand on his shoulder. “Draco, please?” Draco looked into your eyes and pondered for a moment. He didn’t know how to tell you that he had done it for you. He didn’t want you to see that he wasn’t the good person you thought it was. But you weren’t stupid.

"Draco, is it because I was there?“ He sighed and nodded. Your brows furrowed. "I don’t believe that. Are you saying that, if I hadn’t been standing there, you would have given him up?” Draco shrugged again. “I don’t know. Maybe not.” You wrapped your arms around him. “I know you wouldn’t have.”

"How could you possibly know that?“ You looked at him again. "Because I know you, Draco Malfoy. I know this was never what you wanted in life. I know that deep down, you’re scared just like I am. I know that you are a kind, compassionate man. You could have easily been sorted into Hufflepuff as well as Slytherin. And I know that you love deeply. Anyone capable of that can’t be the evil villain they are trying to fool everyone else into thinking they are. I know because I know you. And I love you.”

Draco kissed you fully on the lips. You only parted when another scream of agony ripped through the manor. “We have to do something. Your aunt is torturing Hermione.” Draco’s grip on you tightened briefly as he thought of something. “Dobby.” You cocked your head to the side in confusion. “Dobby?” Draco nodded sheepishly. “Our old house elf. Potter tricked Father into freeing him, but he still comes to visit me. My father doesn’t know, but I liked Dobby. H-He was the closest thing to a friend I had growing up.”

For a moment you didn’t say anything. “See if you can get him here. If can help Harry and his friends, we owe it to them to try. I think…I think Harry is the only one who can save us all.” Draco nodded. “And then, we can finish our breakfast.” Draco laughed softly at that. It was another thing he loved about you. Your ability to make him smile and laugh.

"Always thinking with your stomach.“ You huffed, but the smile on your lips told Draco you weren’t really offended by his comment. "I love you, Y/N.” Your smile widened a little. “And I love you. And when this is all over, we can live in our little bubble forever. With no more interrupted breakfasts.” The thought of spending forever with you flashed in Draco’s mind and made his smile even more.

Moving on: It’s the summer after the war, and Minerva invites Neville for tea. He goes there sure she just wants to know how he’s doing, unaware that she’s about to change his life.

Perhaps, crossing paths with the Wizarding World will finally ease her guilt.

Romione

Until it’s over: Hermione looked up at him, surprised, but incapable to hold back a smile. Maybe he had listened when she’d said that next time there was a ball, he should have asked her before someone else did, and not as a last resort. Or, the brief story of a whispered promise made during a long due dance.

Standing on tiptoe: May the 2nd, 1998. The battle is over, and after Harry’s tales about the last events that brought to Voldemort’s defeat, the trio leave the Headmaster’s office, headed to Gryffindor Tower. Despite being exhausted, there’s one thing Ron needs to do before resting.

Chapter 3 - The Burrow

In light of recent events, I want to state that this blog is a safe space. No matter what JK Rowling says, you are seen, you are valid, and you matter.

Harry Potter and the Sacred Text word of the day: Curiosity

I’ve been talking about curiosity so much that I had to double check to make sure this hasn’t been a chapter theme before lmao. Because Harry is such a naturally curious person! Which is so interesting since he grew up in a household that discouraged questioning anything. It’s something I noted in chapter 3 of book 1 funny enough, because the Hogwarts letters had really sparked Harry’s curiosity. Now at the Burrow, Harry is dazzled by how wizards live and he can ask all the questions he wants! And you can see how much happier he is to once again be in a new place and learn new things. The hosts talked about how curiosity comes with happiness and joy. It’s the natural interesting to discover and learn, whether it’s adventuring or finding a new show to watch or reading a book. Harry finds joy in learning about the wizarding world, Arthur is fascinated by muggle culture, the Weasley children love to hear about their dad’s day at work (I want to think of their curiosity as pure curiosity and not just them wanting a distraction from their mother’s wrath lol).

Back tracking a little, Vanessa from the podcast had made a connection between curiosity and love. Ron for example, who has had way more time in loving conditions, is more likely to question what is going on with his loved ones if they’re quiet or angry. Thus Ron’s immediate concern when he doesn’t hear from Harry all summer. Harry on the other hand, assumes that they weren’t really friends and doesn’t question if anything happened to Ron or anyone else. Part of it is may also be Harry’s own self esteem issues and the negative environment he currently lives in, something I talked about in chapter 1. So I wonder if curiosity is also tied with self worth and esteem, as well as the setting one is in. I just love how as soon as the Weasleys hear about Harry supposedly using magic, they immediately come up with a plan to bust him out. I can just imagine a scenario where Ron’s like we gotta do a jail break and either Fred or George go we’ll use this car that we’ve never used before and might be able to fly. I also love that Casper talked about how the wizarding world and Hogwarts open Harry’s mind and imagination and always him to grow, something that can’t happen at Privet Drive.

I think the line “‘It’s wonderful,’ said Harry happily, thinking of Privet Drive” really encompasses this discussion with the Dursleys and the Weasleys in Harry’s life. Privet Drive and the Burrow are the opposites: whereas Privet Drive is a cookie cutter house with an orderly yard and interior design, the Burrow is unique, cluttered, and well used; one is normal, dull, and oppressive, the other is magical, exciting, and freeing. Harry doesn’t care that the Weasleys are poor or their house is haphazardly put together, all he sees is a magical world that’s far more interesting than where he grew up and that loves and accepts him unconditionally. When Molly dumps all the food onto Harry’s plate, I thought about how the Dursleys starved him. The same also applies to knowledge! With the Weasleys, Harry is full and content.

Questions: If house elves can’t usually use their magic without their master’s permission, what are the exceptions? I’ll have to remember this when Dobby’s family is revealed, if this is ever mentioned again.

Small things:

The line “We’ve come to take you home with us.” I just,, I cry

Harry motherfucking Potter how dare you almost forget Hedwig. She was being all quiet and considerate and you were about to leave her behind smh

Molly’s comment about her not having trouble with Bill or Charlie makes me think they were far more discrete about their rule-breaking and trouble-making lol

Special shout out to both Arthur and Molly. Arthur works so goddamn hard with barely any rewards, but he does it because he loves what he does. His love for the muggle world is so genuine and pure and also something you don’t find in a lot of wizards, especially pure bloods, as seen in how small the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts department despite it being so important to the functioning and secrecy of the wizarding world. And for Molly, she loves her family so much and runs this entire puzzle-pieced house, yet she also has to deal with her misfit children. So this is an appreciation for all those hard working parents and adults whose labor may not always be seen or acknowledged.

Hi! This will be a little blog dedicated to Min Yoongi, better known as Suga, from BTS. He is my bias of the group and I wanna show some more support to him so I decided to make a blog on Tumblr and see how it goes.

ABOUT ME

So, I want to share 20 facts about me, just so you guys can get to know me a little better. Here we go!

1. My name is Kylie, but you can call me Kye for short if you’d like.

2. I am 20 years old and I was born on February 22nd, 1999, making me a Pisces, just like Yoongi.

3. Most people don’t believe me when I tell them this, but I am related to Johnny Appleseed! I found this out when I was about 8 years old because my grandmother was talking to my mom about it.

4. I have 2 female cats, a black cat named Cinder and a tortoiseshell cat name Dobby. Cinder is a Bombay, but we’re not sure what breed Dobby is.

5. BTS is my ultimate bias group and I’ve been a fan since October 13th, 2016 (aka Jimin’s b-day), so I just hit my 3rd anniversary.

6. Not only do I like BTS, but I love K-Pop in general. I stan over 100 groups, so name a group and I mostly likely stan and have a bias.

7. Still talking about K-Pop, my top 5 favorite boy groups are: BTS, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ATEEZ, ONEUS, and ASTRO. My top 5 girl groups are: (G)I-DLE, BLACKPINK, EVERGLOW, ANS, and MAMAMOO.

8. I am 5′7 1/2 inches of too damn tall.

9. My bias wrecker in BTS are Jin, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook, and RM :)

10. I hate bees with a passion. I got stung 22 times when I was little and I’ve been traumatized since.

11. I have 2 siblings. An older brother named Shawn who is 30 and an older sister named Katelyn who is 28. Yes, I’m the baby of the family, no I do not get special treatment or get away with everything because I’m the youngest, in fact I’m blamed for almost everything.

12. I have an astigmatism and I have to wear glasses. Without them, I’m blind as a bat and I run into walls.

13. I struggle with Dyscalculia...which is a disability with math. Google translates it as, “A severe difficulty in making arithmetical calculations, as a result of brain disorder.”

14. I was bullied growing up and didn’t have any real friends until 7th grade. My first friend was named Brieonna (pronounced like Briana) and we’re still best friends to this day. September made it 8 years of friendship.

15. I love video games and I’m suck a fucking nerd for them too. My favorites are Life Is Strange, Tomb Raider (reboot versions), and Dynasty Warriors, but my ALL TIME favorite will always be Kingdom Hearts. Kingdom Hearts is a video game that’s a cross between anime characters and Disney characters.

16. I may get some hate for this, but I don’t get the hype around Billie Eilish...I mean, she seems nice and all, but I don’t like her music AT ALL.

17. Before K-Pop, my favorite artists were Becky G, Shawn Mendes, Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, Melanie Martinez, Jesse McCartney, Austin Mahone, Big Time Rush, and more.

18. My favorite K-Pop reactor is Aaron Freeman. I really recommend checking out his videos.

19. I’m extremely shy in real life. Like if you try and speak to me in real life, I won’t look at you and I’ll just stare at the ground and speak.

20. I am an artist. I love to draw and sketch. I’ve done a few drawings of Yoongi, so maybe I’ll post them one day :)

BONUS FACT: I type really fucking fast, so if you ever see a spelling mistake, it is not intentional. I am a grammar police to myself and I always make sure everything is spelt correctly. Sometimes I miss a word or two though...

3. Have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion?

Yes. On my old blog, not on this one. Like, if you tag it, and it’s just something I disagree with I’ll blacklist it, no prob. But if it’s against LGBT or containing racism, or TERFs, or whatnot, I will unfollow. Humans Rights are for ALL Humans.

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?

I won’t say I hated Ginsy, but I NEVER considered Pansy/Ginny in HP. And then came a fanfic. And I’ve had one close friends write several Ginsy fics for me. I love how different they are. So I would say that.

21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?

As long as it isn’t tagged in that ship’s actual ship tag, I think it’s totally cool. I get why people want them. Hell, I crack!shipped Dobby with a sock. It totally happens.

26. Most shippable character?

Izzy Lightwood. I could ship her with a desk and it would STILL be sexy.

Snily AU - Book 2?

So, here I go again, on a massive long ramble about this stupidly self-indulgent AU I’ve come up with. If you want a recap, I think I’m going to tag this AU under ‘role swap AU’, which is what it’s turned out to be, even if it started as just a simple ‘what if Snily instead of Jily?’ AU, so just search for the role-swap-AU tag on my blog.

And, as before, putting this monster beneath a read more, because, really, I’m writing an entire not!fic here. This is longer than some of the actual oneshots I’ve written, fml...

I’m just going to pick up where I left off; the summer holidays at the beginning of book two. Of course, a lot of what we see in the books is going to belong to Neville, now. I honestly can’t decide if Dobby would think to try stopping Neville’s mail, since he’s not quite as isolated as Harry was. Maybe he tries some other mischief. If he does end up showing himself, I can only imagine Augusta hitting the roof over this interference. (Maybe she even recognises Dobby as a Malfoy elf and gives Lucius what for about it?)

I like the idea that Neville is just as clumsy with the floo as Harry is, and the whole Borgin and Burke’s scene happens pretty much as per canon. Idk if Hagrid would find him or not, but either way he would, eventually get back to Diagon Alley safely (because he, unlike Harry, grew up in the Wizarding World and knew roughly where he was).

But I don’t know if he’d meet the Weasleys there. He certainly wouldn’t have needed rescuing, so what if instead of going there with a friend, it’s more of a coincidence. What if he just happens to bump into Harry there. Harry, who’s there with Sirius and Remus, of course, but also with the Snapes. Lily and Severus and Maeve, and her two younger brothers, Azrael and Gilgamesh. Because Maeve is starting Hogwarts this year and they’re making a big day of it, and Lily invited Remus & co because why not? So Neville bumps into them in Flourish and Blotts, right before he gets recognised by Lockhart.

And, of course, Lucius Malfoy still has his massive beef with the Weasleys for being blood-traitors and poor as dirt, as per canon, but in this AU, I think he’d have an even bigger beef with Severus. Severus, who Lucius was supposed to recruit, Severus whom he groomed for the role and made promises of everything the Dark Lord would give him if Severus fought for him, Severus who embarrassed him so massively in front of the Dark Lord when he picked a mudblood bitch over all that power and promise.

So it’s not Ginny Weasley who gets the Diary, it’s Maeve Snape. Lucius slips it in among her books while making snide comments about Severus sullying himself, how very like his muggle-loving mother, a legacy he must be so proud of- Lily shuts him up by punching him square in the jaw. And probably makes a comment about how does Lucius like being put on his ass by a mudblood, with muggle fighting techniques. Not so inferior now, huh? And Remus makes a quip about Lily being a healer, and wasn’t there something in her oaths about not doing harm? And Lily’s like ‘I swore to fight parasites and diseases, and that’s exactly what I did.’

And I want Draco to have a very complicated problem here, because on the one hand, he’s been conditioned to side with his father, and his father doesn’t like Severus Snape. But Draco, canonically, likes alchemy and potion-making, and Severus has, in this verse, had the opportunity to become a rather world-renowned name in the field. Draco, deep down and so secretly he barely admits it to himself (right next to where he hides his massive, debilitating crush on Harry), wants an apprenticeship with Severus when he’s older. So he’s bitter about it, and even more bitter because he’d entertained hopes of befriending Maeve, selling it to his father as luring her away from her family, but honestly mostly just in the hopes of getting an in with famous Potioneer and Alchemist Severus Snape. But no, she’s friends with Harry Potter, the bane of Draco’s entire existence. So he’s an even more pissy little shit than usual.

And that’s the summer, so now they’re off to Hogwarts. Except, of course, Dobby. And this is where things start getting complicated. Because I think Dobby would still stop Neville going through the barrier, since it’s one of the surest ways to stop or delay him, a point he has to pass through, and there’s no way around, and there’s a time limit. He probably has sneaky ways to make sure the Longbottoms are late, so there wouldn’t even be drama of there being a lot of people stuck, not just Neville. But would Ron be with him? Was any of the delay the Weasleys suffered Dobby’s fault? Do they get there earlier? So here’s the real important question:

9) Does Neville fly the car to Hogwarts? 9a) If the Weasleys are even there, does Ron even get stuck with Neville? Or is it someone else? The twins? Ginny?

I hadn’t thought of that before, but that could be interesting, actually. The two of them would be so shy around each other, Neville just naturally timid and self-effacing, and GInny over-come by her hero-worship crush. But Ginny is bold, when she’s not intimidated by trying to impress her crush, so if Neville did mention waiting by the car, I think she would be daredevil and stubborn enough to suggest flying it to school. I think the lure of all that time alone with her crush would be enough to make her push, even if Neville was hesitant and dubious.

Still, the question stands. Either way, he gets to Hogwarts eventually. And Ginny, Maeve, and Luna are devastated to realise they’re all in different houses, but Harry encourages them to not let house divisions come between them.

Which, speaking of house divisions, brings me to a plot point I really like. Of course, because they’re both in Slytherin, Harry and Draco can’t have their epic Quidditch rivalry. There can only be one Slytherin Seeker, after all. So, of course, they both try out, and it’s a furious competition, and they’re almost neck-and-neck. And eventually, Marcus Flint decides one of them is reserve Seeker, while the other gets the actual positions. So, of course, before every match, the reserve Seeker tries to sabotage the actual Seeker so that they get to play in the match. So of course, when the next year rolls around, and the reserve Seeker gets to be on the actual team, the new reserve Seeker sabotages them right back.

I think that, behaviour-wise, it makes more sense for Draco to be the reserve Seeker in their second year, to start off the whole sabotage-drama? I think Harry would be petty enough to try sabotaging Draco (remember, he is a Slytherin this go around), especially if he thought Marcus Flint had shown favouritism by picking Draco. (Maybe because of the broom-bribe?) But I haven’t even begun to think how it might play out in later years, so I’m not sure.

And following on from the quidditch-related questions; given that Neville doesn’t play quidditch, there can’t be any rogue bludger, so there really need to be other ways for Dobby to attempt to injure Neville enough to get sent home. I have no idea what they might be, though. I mean, Neville is already clumsy, so maybe he just seems to be having an Extra Clumsy Year or something, but that doesn’t seem like enough? I thought maybe, that if he didn’t fly the car to Hogwarts, this might be a good way for Neville to encounter the Whomping Willow? He is, after all, really interested in Herbology. Dobby might engineer an incident there?

I really ought to reread the second book (or listen to the audiobook, at least), because I’m a bit fuzzy on the order of events, but I think the only crucial plot point before the whole rogue bludger thing was the Deathday Party, right? I think that would all happen pretty much the same. No reason for it not to, really. And then, of course, because Dobby is trying to injure Neville, even without the bludger, he probably would end up in the hospital wing eventually, and Colin Creevey would try to visit him. But hey, would Ginny go with him? I kind of like the idea that they became sort of friends, bonding over their shared crushes on Neville. But if she goes with him, does she get petrified, too? That kind of ruins the whole only-muggle-borns streak right out of the gate, but it might be an interesting avenue to explore?

10) Who gets to be Slytherin Seeker first? Harry or Draco? 11) How does Dobby attempt to not-kill Neville? 12) Does Ginny go with Colin to visit Neville in the hospital wing? 12a) If she does, does she get petrified? Or does she avoid it? 12b) If she does avoid it; how?

And then we come to the duelling club. No Sev here, he’s free of that blasted classroom, so who does Lockhart rope in as his ‘assisstant’? My first thought was Flitwick, since he’s the renowned duelist on staff. But then I thought: McGonagall. Can you imagine McGonagall getting stuck having to deal with Lockhart in full on show-off mode? I think it might even be as entertaining as the actual canon dueling club.

Draco still summons a snake, and Neville still talks to it, and everyone still thinks he’s the Heir of Slytherin, as per canon. Only, in this verse, Neville actually has sort-of-friends in Slytherin. They’re not close, but they know and like each other, and Slytherin house is losing it’s collective mind at the notion of an actual real life parseltongue at Hogwarts. Jealousy and awe run rampant, and Harry and Tracey can tell Neville all about it. And most importantly, when Neville starts angsting over how it’s a Dark Art and maybe he is just a failure and an awful person deep down, Blaise, a well-educated pureblood from a Slytherin family can tell Neville all about the good parseltongues. (I really hate how inconsistent JKR was about that sort of thing. Dumbledore says “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” and yet JKR doesn’t have one example of a natural born parseltongue being good. Fuck you, madam. Fuck. You.)

When I was a kid, one of my favourite books was D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths, and one of the stories in it that stuck with me was the story of Melampus, who nursed a nest of orphaned snakes, and in return they licked his ears so clean he could hear and understand the language of animals. If that isn’t a perfect ‘origin of parseltongue’ story (Blaise: The muggles got it a bit wrong, of course, it wasn’t all animals, even snakes aren’t that wise, but they did teach him their own language) I don’t know what is. And he used the knowledge he gained from talking to them to heal. That, in fact, Parseltongue was known as a language of healing until only very recently. (Snakes are literally part of the symbol of western medicine ffs.)

And that maybe in other countries, like India and China, parseltongue is practically revered. They have their own parseltongue lines, and they’re honoured and maybe even rulers. (Are Chinese/East Asian Dragons snake-like enough to speak parseltongue? Do they speak dragonese? Are they bilingual?)

And Merlin, okay. I headcanon that Merlin was a parseltongue. Because I don’t care what JKR may have said on the subject, Merlin existed sometime around 500AD, which is five hundred years before Hogwarts even existed. He could not have been a Slytherin. However, I do really like the idea of him being Slytherin’s ancestor. (Which would also help explain Slytherin’s reputation for being obsessed with lineage. If I had Merlin in my family tree, I’d fucking brag about it, too.) And modern witches and wizards who aren’t historians only know vaguely that he’s associated with Slytherin, which then gets mistaken for him being in Slytherin. And any sufficiently educated witch or wizard (Hermione) will get so frustrated with that misconception because the dates don’t even match up you uneducated nitwit.

And of course Slytherins have a different opinion on Slytherin himself. Maybe when Hermione hears Tracey, a muggleborn like herself, defending the most famous hater of muggleborns in history (besides Voldemort), she gets all geared up for a Research Project, and she and Tracey disappear into the library together for hours on hours looking for unbiased sources and historical accounts of what Slytherin was actually like.

Sorry about that tangent, I just have a lot of feelings about parseltongues and Slytherin and Merlin and Greek Myths. Anyway, back to the plot; I think the whole Christmas drama with the polyjuice potion should just be scrapped. It just doesn’t work when the Boy Who Lived has friends in Slytherin and can just ask. I think Harry would definitely be of the opinion that Draco really probably isn’t the Heir (Harry: If Malfoy were descended from Slytherin himself, I think we would have heard about it by now. At great length. In detail. Every day.)

But maybe there was still a bit of an incident over Christmas, because Draco was mouthing off about how he hopes the next attack kills someone, and Harry argues with him, and it turns into a massive thing, with students from all years weighing in on this side or that. And Maeve is just sitting in the corner shrinking in her seat because she’s really starting to think ‘what if it’s me?’

So she tries to get rid of the diary. Maybe she confides in Ginny and Luna. (Or, just Luna, if Ginny is petrified...) I think she probably actually showed them the diary in the first place, and Luna made some vaguely disturbing comments about it, and Ginny thought it was neat, but they didn’t get sucked in like Maeve did, and they’ve been really kind of worried about her, so when she goes to them and explains - not all of it, she’s too frightened to admit to all of it, but she does tell them she thinks there’s something wrong with the diary, that maybe it’s hurting her - they’re (Luna’s) really relieved to help her get rid of it.

But does Neville find it? I mean, the whole thing is such a damn coincidence, but... hmm, Harry did find his way right to the diadem in the Room of Requirement, so if we work on the basis that Horcruxes are at least somewhat aware of each other and possibly even drawn to each other, then I think Neville would have to find it. (Whew, at least that’s one plot-bending point avoided.)

Next is Valentine’s Day. Ugh. This all depends on whether Ginny is petrified or not, doesn’t it? That’s probably an arguement for her not being petrified, because I can’t think of anyone else who has the right connections here. Of course, what the hell would happen if Neville kept the diary? Or would Maeve just steal it out of his bag at some point? I think she would have to. But if Ginny’s awake, then it goes basically like it did in canon, only Maeve is with Ginny when Neville’s bag splits, and she’s the one who panics over Neville having it, and she’s the one who convinces Ginny to help her steal it back. (Because if Tom was hurting Maeve, he might end up hurting Neville, and Ginny would love the idea of getting to be the hero that saves her idol from some soul-sucking diary. You can imagine the pre-adolescent daydreams the entire escapade fueled.)

Speaking of daydreams and romance, I love the idea of the entirety of the male-attracted population of Slytherin getting into a vicious fued over whether Lockhart is crush-worthy or not. Because, like him or not, the man is devious, and successful, and that’s got to be attractive to a lot of Slytherins. On the other hand, he wouldn’t know subtle if it jumped up and whacked him over the head with a brick. (I’m really torn as to what side of the equation Draco would fall on. On the one hand, he isn’t exactly subtle either, so there’s really good grounds for thinking he might be just as bad as Hermione about it all. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel that he’s much more likely to have a teacher-crush on Lupin, and obviously massively resent it and be a little brat about it just like he is about his crush on Harry. ...Although I suppose ‘why not both?’ does sort of apply here XD) Blaise is obviously very anti-Lockhart, and so is Daphne, Pansy is very pro-Lockhart, and so is Millicent. Harry, Tracey, and Theo just do not get what the fuss is all about, leave them out of it, please. That’s how Harry makes friends with Theo.

And then Hermione gets petrified. Only it’s not Penelope with her, it’s Tracey. Because they’ve been spending so much time together in the library researching Slytherin. (And also because Dean’s ‘just chuck out all the Slytherins’ speech pissed me right off, and I really wish JKR had actually put effort into debunking all the forms of prejudice in the books, not just the ones she set up to be distasteful. Not all Muggles are magic-hates, and not all Slytherins are Death Eaters.) And Tracey getting petrified would change a lot of the school’s attitude, because suddenly, no one is safe. The Slytherins aren’t All In On It, they’re just as much at risk as anybody else. No one knows where to look or where to point the finger.

And then there’s the whole thing with the spiders that I don’t even know where to start with. Obviously, Neville is going to get told by the Diary that Hagrid was the one to unleash the monster, so he would go talk to Hagrid, but... Not only is there the question of whether he would have stayed long enough to hear Hagrid’s warning without the Invisibility Cloak (which I still dunno if he has or not?), but... Would he really actually go looking for ‘answers’ in the Forbidden Forest? Which is where he was almost mauled by Voldemort once already. Ron certainly isn’t going to encourage him. If he does somehow go, how does he escape, given that maybe the car isn’t there? Argh. This whole thing becomes a complete mess with the possible changes of earlier and I have no idea what to do with it all. I just know that he does, somehow, need to be inspired to realise that Myrtle is the one the basilisk killed.

Or maybe he doesn’t? Is there some other way Neville could find the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets? Maybe Neville just... asks a snake? He could do that. There have to be some snakes at Hogwarts, and they must have heard the basilisk roaming about. Or, hey, maybe Luna helps? If Ginny was petrified, it might inspire her to investigate, in her own way, and she might find things others would miss. (Maybe she would just... go around asking all the ghosts if they know what happened fifty years ago.)

And that’s not getting into the whole issue of the adventure in the Chamber. Obviously, it’s Maeve that gets taken this time, so maybe it should be Harry that goes with Neville to the Chamber? Or maybe (if she’s not petrified) it should be Ginny? ...I feel I should mention that I don’t ship Ginny/Neville, and that’s not going to be end-game. She’s going to get over her crush and stay over it. And maybe actually getting to go on an adventure with the Boy Who Lived, getting to know how awful it is, how not-heroic it all it, how it’s just desperation and fear and muddling through as best you can, would help take the shine off her hero-worship and let her really start seeing Neville as a person, not a hero.

And then there’s also the problem of Lockhart. Do they take him along? Does Neville even think to go to him or does he just go on his own (or with Ron or Harry or Ginny or Luna or someone) because Someone Has To? I have no idea what to do with Lockhart, but given the curse something bad has to happen to him, right? And if the Flying Car thing didn’t happen, Ron’s wand isn’t broken, which means an obliviate wouldn’t backfire.

13) How does Neville find the Chamber of Secrets? 13a) If he goes to ask Hagrid about it, how would not having the Invisibility Cloak change things? 13b) If he does go into the Forbidden Forest following spiders, how the hell would they get out of it if they didn’t fly the car to Hogwarts? 13c) How involved in the process is Harry and/or Blaise, given Tracey got petrified? How involved is Luna, if Ginny got petrified? 14) Who goes with Neville to the Chamber of Secrets, if anyone? 14a) Does Lockhart go with them? 15) How does the curse get rid of Lockhart? Is it the same backfiring memory charm as canon? 15a) Does the basilisk kill and/or eat him? If so, how would that change the later story given he wouldn’t be able to reappear in book 5? (I don’t think it would change it very much? But my memory of book 5 is the fuzziest, and I can’t remember ^^”) 16) Does the basilisk have to die? Or can Neville somehow steal ‘control’ from Diary!Riddle and/or free the basilisk from his control? 16a) If the basilisk does die, should Neville and/or Maeve find baby basilisks and decide to raise them to replace the dead one?

No matter what happens, in the end, Neville kills the Diary, Maeve wakes up, and they meet her parents in Slughorn’s office. Lily and Sev are both relieved and furious, and when Lily finds out that her daughter was possibly possessed by Voldemort’s memory, she threatens to just go back to Italy. Lucius shows up, Neville realises what happened, frees Dobby, etc. The petrified students all wake up, Hagrid gets back from Azkaban, and probably Gryffindor wins the House Cup, regardless of who actually went down to the Chamber with Neville? Idk. If anyone can remember more details about exactly how the points stood in second year lemme know. So, a couple of bonus questions, because I’m a forgetful dumbass:

17) How would Slughorn being Potions Master affect all of this? Would he make much of a difference? Or would he just be bumbling about in the background, and have as much effect on the plot as Flitwick, or Sinistra? 17a) Who’s in the Slug Club? Who got recruited right away (like Neville, obviously), and who gets picked up in later years as they grow and mature and their skills come to light? 18) Who wins the House Cup?

Aaand on to book 3. Good god, what the hell am I even going to do with that, given, like, all of the major players just... aren’t, in this AU? I’ll think about that, and try to get a semi-coherent ramble full of yet more obnoxious questions written soon. ...Ish.
