hi, as someone who is tragically gen Z and only ever read AO3, can I ask: what was so great about LiveJournal? Like, I know that there were fics posted there (and I've even read about the "purge", so I get why it isn't used anymore) and that it was sort of a forum-type thing. But what I don't understand, wouldn't Tumblr fill in the latter function? How was that site any different? I see a lot of people reminiscing about it and I'm confused

A big factor in LJ's greatness is timing and nostalgia.

It was genuinely great, but it wasn't quite as great as all of the Lo, shall the Golden Age ne'er come again? posts suggest.

LJ arrived at a pivotal time in the development of the internet both in terms of technical stuff and how many people had access. Many fans who are now in their thirties to fifties first discovered fandom through LJ and many were at a time in their lives when they were feeling energetic and up to making lots of new friends—and to figuring out how to make a site work for them.

I got on LJ in 2002 when it required invites. At its height (2005-7, let's say), there was a reasonable site search, and fans had developed all sorts of community resources for finding each other.

Those same Tumblrites are now making all the same geriatric-sounding posts we LJers do about how other sites lack the required features to be good for fandom while missing that 90% of tumblr's "features" at its height (2012-2016, let's say) were actually fan-created and were basically the same as any fandom newsletter or links page or all the versions of this kind of personal curation stretching back to long before the internet existed.

What life phase you hit a site at matters.

With all of that said, no, LJ was not a forum. It was a blogging site with threaded comments.

The key point to understand is that conversation was always happening in a specific person's space. Unlike on a true forum, people were in the comments on a particular post in a journal owned by another fan. (On a forum, there's the first post in a thread, but it's still more of a communal space with less of a hierarchy.)

Overall, the LJ format can have a feeling a bit like you're over at someone's house for tea. There's more of a sense of intimacy and also behaving yourself in front of community members.

Tumblr being obscure and impossible to find anything in does give it some of the same vibe relative to Twitter, but it's still part of modern social media that tries to shove every rando into the face of every other rando.

But it wasn't just vibes: LJ also had robust privacy features where you could lock a post to this or that group of friends. You could moderate your comments section properly. Tumblr has far fewer controls to force people to behave or leave on a technical level.

The biggest thing many people miss about LJ is the threaded comments. At least by late LJ and on Dreamwidth, you can expand and collapse threads, making it far easier to deal with a massive comments section. But more than that, things are properly threaded with multiple levels of hierarchy that are all easily visible in the same place.

On Tumblr, it used to be extremely difficult to find all of the actual commentary on a post. Nowadays, it's far easier, but you still have to scroll chronologically, and multiple versions of a post with a long chain of commentary may be much more divorced from each other than what would happen in a LJ comments section.

But could we use Tumblr pretty much how we used LJ?

We could.

I do.

The key things that people tend to miss about LJ, aside from the younger and more excited version of themselves or the friends they've lost since then, are:

Heavily text-based

It may sound odd on the modern internet, but there are a lot of people whose brains don't like or handle an image-heavy site well. They were everywhere in SF book fandom. They were everywhere on the early internet. Today, they're hanging out on Dreamwidth and still going to their SF cons. They're usually not on Tumblr.

You could follow the discussion

Threaded comments help, but a lot of it is about having some place you can check for updates. It wasn't actually that easy to follow big LJ discussions unless you were subscribed to comments and reading along as things were happening instead of coming along after the entire mass of comments had been left.

The tone of the discussion is intellectual and one's enemies are "idiots", not "problematic"

All this requires is a penchant for longwindedness and an itchy blocking finger to remove anyone slinging ad hominems from the comments section.

On tumblr, it's as simple as conversations happening in the replies on a popular account and that person not tolerating suibaiting and threats.

(And make no mistake, a lot of LJ discussion was in the comments on popular accounts, not spread equally between everyone's.)

It does require that multiple people like that tone and want to engage in that way, but lots of people do want to.

These days, I interact with tumblr by checking my askbox and reading my activity page. The vast, vast majority of my posts are ones where I'm the OP, so if I block someone, they're booted from the discussion entirely.

For me... yeah, Tumblr functions almost exactly like LJ.

Also like LJ, while I'm hosting the conversation, if you hang around, you'll see the same people again and again in the comments. They may or may not also host that kind of conversation in their space, and there's a larger pool of lurkers who have some notion of which people count as regulars. Other people are watching from the shadows, enjoying or deriding the takes of the usual crowd.

People presumably do like reading my lengthy commentary or they wouldn't be here, but my tumblr wouldn't be popular like this without a healthy pool of other people who chime in regularly. It's not just that there are more people: it's that you see the same people over time. There's a bit more sense of place and community than on some parts of the internet.

So, in my opinion, the failure to just recreate LJ fandom on Tumblr was a skill issue.

Threaded comments were great, but LJ culture came from mailing lists, and mailing lists had the same issue as tumblr with the diverging threads.

We solved that back then by clipping out only the parts we wanted to respond to (you'd write "snip" around the quotation to show it was incomplete). We solved the smaller LJ issue by linking to other posts we were referencing and doing discussion link roundups. We solve it on tumblr by, again, linking to what we're talking about and even quoting multiple reblog chains in our own reblog of just one chain.

Tumblr's technical features and even general crap-ness aren't really the problem. 90s and early 00s sites regularly went down for periods of time unthinkable today.

The missing piece is people.

When one is in an active fandom with others who curate or with friends who let one know what's up, a site with imperfect features is easy to figure out and retrofit for fandom's needs. When one already feels out of touch and is between fannish passions—or at least fannish passions anyone else cares about—seeing the potential in a new site is hard.

Threaded comments are different and better.

LJ's built-in way to see everyone's blog in your own style was better. The automatic timestamps and the ease of seeing a paginated archive of an entire blog was better than tumblr's endless scroll and lack of clear date labeling. But some of that can be fixed with xkit or knowing your way around tumblr well.

A lot of it is nostalgia for the lj era and a refusal to take the time to figure out how to use tumblr in an oldschool internet way.

So by all means, people, weigh in about what made LJ great or how the culture felt at the time...

But if I see one more god damn response going "You can't have a conversation on tumblr!" in reply to my tumblr, which contains nothing but conversation, I am coming for you.

i forgot to answer you yesterday but better late than never right?

my bookshelf is quite outdated style wise and honestly i think i’m going to change it soon. the top shelf is all the series in rainbow order. the bottom shelf has scrapbooks on the left, some nonfiction books next to that and a safe in the middle (which i can no longer open because i lost the key and took the batteries out, so the code doesn’t work). to the right of that are all my pretty books eg leather or clothbound.

i think one of the books that says a lot about me is the 600+ page collection of poetry in latin because a) i do not understand latin and b) i still try to read it anyway. i think it’s says a lot about my personality in ways that i don’t fully understand. i stole it from my school library and snuck it home and it has sat on the top of my bookcase ever since. but more seriously, i’d have to go with the flower fairy books by cicely mary barker that my godmother gave me as a child, especially the season ones, because they are so beautiful and i really love them with all my heart, even though they are children’s books. don’t know if that’s what you wanted but hey :)

as i alluded to before, i think what you’ve said about your bookshelf tells more about you than your tumblr url or your name ever could. not in a “i know who you are” type of way, but in an “i understand how you see the world” type of way. i think both of your answers to the book question - the latin collection & the children’s book - say a lot about you in very contrasting ways. not gonna psychoanalyze perfect strangers on main, but thank you for trusting me with that response! genuinely didn’t expect an answer on that haha.

i’d like very much to say that loneliness is something that doesn’t plague me, but i’ve been wondering lately if maybe loneliness is just something i’m going to live with for the rest of my life. it feels like a stranger to me, & the status quo, all at once. but i don’t know if loneliness is such a bad thing. i’ve come to despise contentment, because the idea of not needing to search for more is a suffocating one. is loneliness the solution to that? i feel it the most profoundly when i’m with other people, but my mind feels like it’s on a parallel & distinctly separate plane. i write a lot about that feeling, in songs & stories, but also apparently tumblr posts vaguely directed at strangers.

but yeah, as far as my relationship to loneliness goes, i would call it a companion but not a friend. i don’t know what void i’m shouting this into, but i hope it understands. good question!

i’ll end this on a lighter note, since that was… heavy, haha. i didn’t mean to bum anyone out, but oh well, it’s my blog i suppose. my friends know me well enough to expect that, & strangers should come to.

but yeah, how would i spend the perfect day? the perfect day has infinite forms, because it’s whatever day i’m living. in my head, the perfect day is a warm one in july, two years ago, spotting my best friend at the top of the hill. i think today i’m going to go to the coffee shop & get some writing done, & hopefully i’ll find a friend to hang out with & stave off some of that loneliness. i’m not sure. friends are weirdly hard to come by in the summer, which i feel like is its own version of being lonely. i want to experience life & sunshine with someone today.

First I want to say thank you so, so much for articulating why you want an app. Every time I see a post about an AO3 app go around I dig through the notes trying to figure out why people want one and nobody has ever explained. To me, mobile apps are almost universally pains in the ass that are less intuitive and have fewer features than the same service's website, so I've been completely bewildered by the request for an app for years and years. Your post makes it much easier for me to understand where people are coming from and I want to thank you so much.

That said, this sentence, I'm not sure what you mean and I was wondering if you'd be willing to expand on it?

With apps I can have a tab for search and results, a tab for fics, history, etc, and they would all be accessible directly from the nav bar/side bar.

What do you mean by a "tab" here? It doesn't seem like you mean the same thing as a browser tab? I thought you meant a page, but these are all already accessible from the header, so I'm not sure that's what you mean either.

If I were King Of AO3 there's definitely changes I would make to how navigation and search work, but as it stands, I can get anywhere I want on the site from the homepage within four clicks, which seems a reasonable number, and advanced search, history, and bookmarks are each one click away, which is already my ideal.

Also, about this:

An app can automatically download the chapter I’m reading the moment I open it, and maybe even the whole work. So I can pick it up if I have to go into offline mode later.

....Can they? I've never known any app to automatically download anything for offline use aside from my podcast app and Libby, and I had to go into the settings and turn on like three different levers to make that happen. It's one of the reasons I hate apps so much; I'd rather just interface with the website directly than deal with a wrapper that moved all the buttons and took away some functionalities. If app developers have been able to actually add value all this time and have been electing not to, I'm gonna scream. (On reread this sounds like it might come off combative and I genuinely don't intend it that way! Like I said, I really am quite grateful that you laid out the actual reasons why you want an app. I'm just irritated with other apps that are bad!)

the worst thing that could possibly happen to ao3 is it being put on the app store so please stop asking for it because you don't understand what would happen if that went through. ao3's whole deal is it archives EVERYTHING, while the apple app store's whole deal is keeping everything clean and safe. so if ao3 were to have an app all of the 'bad' stuff, including nsfw in general, would have to be censored at best or would be purged at worse. the google play store is more lax but who fucking knows what GOOGLE would police if they got their hands on the archive. do not ask for an app. do not use third party apps. it's on mobile browser functioning perfectly, just fucking use that before you ruin everything for everyone please.

I am intimately familiar with how little most people know about computers.

But you see, I do have what I consider a basic knowledge that I expect someone to know if they're in tech. Fellow IT workers and programmers just need to know these things to do our jobs effectively.

So, when the guy I'm training searches "Google" on his browser's address bar, clicks on the google link on the google search page, and then pastes the URL he had copied to his clipboard INTO THE GOOGLE SEARCH instead of, ya know, using a web browser normally. I get concerned.

Because, see, it's not even that he's a business or horticulture or any unrelated major who's working IT just to pay for college. Happens all the time with student positions, and we're more than happy to help these guys learn more about tech and help send some more power users into their fields.

No, he is a software engineering major. Just a year behind me. I know what courses he's taken, because I've taken them. He should know better. He's not a bad programmer either, I've seen some of his work. He has written websites from scratch. But cannot navegate a web browser to save his life.

And I realized in that moment, that singular moment, why all those 100 level courses I took that I hated because I fell asleep in them, why they were inportant. Because this knowledge, at least in my university, just isn't being passed down. "Intro to Computing" taught him what a mouse and keyboard are, why a monutor is useful, and gave him a basic cursory glance at the different parts of a PC internally.

But nobody explained to him what a URL is. Or what different parts of a web browser actually do. They jumped straight into code, giving him hardlinks to follow and step by step guides to set everything up, without really explainung what he was doing or why until his dev environment is setup and he's writing code. He can use keyboard shortcuts and command lines like the rest of em. But he doesn't know what the Chrome address bar is, that it's connected directly to google anyways, or that he can put URL's into it to get to websites directly.

Im terrified. That it's even remotely possible that someone who is paid to be giving tech advice to others at a major institution can be missing these key skills.

To be clear, I don't think we're in danger of losing important fundamental tech knowledge yet. There's good learning resources out there and people who are working to expand this knowledge and preserve it. And we should share them with more people. My grandmother enjoyed showing her yarnworking group how to use a pattern database website she'd found, and they're all deepy entrenched in new fun projects using patterns they found on Ravelry.com

But knowing who to trust for information on the internet is crucial for your own and other's safety. And the fact that someone hoping to go into working on the very fabric that underpins the information superhighway doesn't know how to change lanes or read a map? Means who we trust when asking tech questions is even more important, especially with the rising prevelance of "AI" information, which is just wrong. The machine we built to guess how to end sentences makes up lies. Wow. I can't believe my phone autocorrect we trained on stolen books and almost every wrod ever written on the internet without anyone's consent doesn't correctly write a program to pilot a rocket.

Im rambling now. But maybe if you do know what I'm talking about, reach out to someone who could benefit from a little more computer knowledge and show them in a fun way how a web browser works. We all benefit from increased computer literacy.

at 12 years old i knew the very basics of english. we’re talking a1 going on a2 level here – it was enough for scoring straight A’s at school but not much to really get you around is what i’m saying. and as a 12-year-old improving my language skills wasn’t exactly my priority, y’know.

but the thing was, i loved to draw and i loved cartoons. and in 2012 there was no place more fitting for that very thing that your good old deviantart. now i don’t know if the website has ever worked in different languages but it has definitely never worked in slovak or czech (the languages i spoke fluently at the time). so i was basically left stumbling through that wild west of sparkle dogs and emo ponies with nothing but my mspaint pictures and english skills that didn’t even entail the knowledge of the difference between ‘know’ and ‘now’. and somehow, not only did i go and make cringy public posts that were barely readable, i also went and interacted with other people completely in english with the blind confidence only a 12-year-old can possess.

by around 15 i got on tumblr and in a desperate search of community ended up watching supernatural, no subtitles no dub, genuinely barely understanding a thing for 5 whole seasons. did i stop though? well, the show had monsters and pretty men. i didn’t really care for much else.

and i got examples like these to talk of for days. as a teenager at one point i became too pretentious for my own good and decided to read english classics in their original forms (no translations). yeah, i ended up actually understanding about 1/5 of like every 300 pages but, hey, i did it anyway. then there was that time i became obsessed with a random swedish person i found on ig and religiously stalked their ask.fm (does anyone remember that site? no? just me? okay) where they mostly (and obviously) answered stuff in swedish. uncomfortably eager to know every last detail of them, i translated every sentence they wrote until i essentially began to remember some words and genuinely do so to this day. to the point i can form very basic limited sentences. it’s not much at all, but it’s still pretty cool considering i never actually sat down to learn the language. my newest hyperfixation includes a certain russian video game – which means i’m doing nothing but looking up fanart for it, most of it with cool quotes except in russian. and let me tell you, i never actually thought i was capable of learning, let alone being able to read, azbuka but here we are anyway.

and, well, what i’m really trying to say is that being weird about stuff goes a long way in language learning. i’ve gone the traditional route as well – with german for instance and it has always ended up in flames each and every single time

and i know it’s easier done with english, considering it’s availability and, well, everything being in english, but i always tell the kids i tutor this: find a thing you really like, but i mean really REALLY like. then find an adjacent thing to it, maybe an online community, or a specific book about it, a movie, a website, anything that’s in your target language and which you cannot get in another language (at least another language you speak). and then go and read/watch/consume that thing. don’t understand a word? good. consume another one, catch a word, a phrase here and there. do it until you make out a sentence, a paragraph, a dialogue. before you know it, you’ll have gotten way further than you would have ever guessed.

Wanted to write stories, wrote a bunch, learned how to write. In that order.

Wanted to crochet toys, crocheted a bunch, learned to crochet. In that order.

Want to learn a language... try to learn that language... struggle and quit.

What's the "do" that comes before the "learn" in languages?

#it does take literal years to learn a language this way but it does work #at least it has worked for me #i’ve never liked the advice of ‘don’t jump straight into it’ or something along the lines #i say: actually do exactly that #want to learn spanish to be able to read don quixote in original?#go over some basics such as pronouns & verb formation & sentence structure & so on #and then? then get that original copy of don quixote and just fucking go for it #yeah you’ll definitely get like barely a page of the whole book. but hey you’ll be able to say you did it.

As someone who’s read a lot of destiel fics over the years, which fics are so good they changed you in some (big/small) way?

ohhh this is a marvelous ask! so much to think about! that said, my memory is sucky at the best of times so this might be a short list.

1. twist and shout.

yeah yeah yeah, i know! thee classic destiel fic years ago… but the thing was, i read it at a time in my life when i was really struggling to see any redemption in being gay. i hadn’t even begun to question if *i* was queer yet, let alone my gender or anything past that. at that point in my life i was a cishet kid raised in an extremely homophobic environment, and here was a fic that showed these two people — these two men — so entirely human, so entirely in love. each chapter changed me individually, and even the ending hurt in an aching, caring way. yeah, i read it way before it was healthy for me to, and it was bad for me in a few ways for how young i was paired with how sheltered i had been, but it also touched a part of me that i didn’t even know existed at the time. saying that love existed, and that even when it hurts it can be beautiful. not trying to wax poetic, and i haven’t read it in a few years, but it did affect me pretty deeply and i’ll always think of it fondly. (also the one time i made my older sibling cry just by describing the story as a hetero romance)

2. the usual by thatoneguy35 on wattpad.

i don’t know if it ever got finished but it was so cute at the time and i still think about the kiss in the snow <3 the domesticity and simplicity… i can’t even describe it, or why it meant so much to me, but i do adore it. i might search it out again actually.

3. cheapest room in the house by biggaybenny (aka skepticalfrog)

another (more recent) absolute CLASSIC. deals with the depth and layers of dean without a lot of the gaudiness in his history some people include, if that makes sense. skrog’s characters are so human, in their joy and their pain and their lives. castiel is allowed anger and dean’s grief is so real, and on top of that it has one of the best depictions of jack and dean’s relationship in a way that honestly fucked me up in a good way. ALSO the way it acknowledges the complicated way you can love your father even when it’s fucked up… it’s written so lovingly and portrays queerness as something important, but also something that doesn’t need to be taken So Seriously that all humour is sucked out. also i am personally someone who enjoys eating mashed potatoes with my hands That Scene is delightful to me.

4. untitled fic by my irl friend

so at the time that i started reading more spn fic, i got one of my friends to actually watch the show. she ended up writing a super sweet fic in a scrappy notebook and had me read it and basically beta it. the fic itself didn’t impact me so much as the warm intimacy that came with her watching my face so intently as i read over the pages, the way i got to see the characters through her eyes, her fondness for the show. it was so much fun and had the most scrumptious twist when it started getting close to the end. she never finished it but it was so much fun to read through it with her :)

5. the bluebells blush when they sing by fleeceframe (aka tasteslikevelvet)

read this a week or so ago and it gave me the most glorious night of feeling something holy in being trans and queer. the way she handles gender and gender expression, the way she just. Understands cas and dean’s relationship… also such a genuine cas pov!!!!!!!! it switches between them in a seamless and marvelously done way, and it is just simply. one of the loveliest fics i’ve ever read.

6. oh my darling by @pinknatural

a HUGE reason i am currently working on my peach fic. the love and the subtle ways of showing it, the simple task of caring for other people… it makes me feel insane in the best of ways. i think about it whenever i eat an orange or a cutie and it makes me smile <3 also…… cas <3

there are so many more that i think about regularly, and that have impacted me deeply, but if i could remember and list them all then we’d be here for a very long time. here’s some of the ones off the top of my head though, and if you haven’t read them i hope you do!!!!

the concept of "late bloomers" is so weird, i'm looking into it because it gets thrown at aros and aces a lot and apparently it often is used to mean someone who wants to have sex but can't because they're shy or unattractive.

wikipedia uses it exclusively for people finding their talents later in life

some definitions refer specifically to puberty: you're a later bloomer if the physical changes set in late.

some people just use the word for folks who are or were unpopular in highschool.

i had to search for "sexual late bloomer" to get more responses that were not about talents.

when searching for "romantic late bloomer", i find pages talking about people who want to have romantic experiences but don't, for whatever reason. (shy and unattractive again?)

for both searches, sometimes it just means people who get married in their 40s instead of 20s or 30s.

also people seem to be in agreement that it sucks, be it because it "feels wrong" or because you don't fit in in highschool or college. or they have a superiority complex about it in the geek way

the most interesting thing i found was this article:

its mainly about how its normal and okay to achieve these "milestones" later in life than your twenties.

i hear about these milestones a lot, and according to this article it seems to tie in with people being like "im old im already 26!" and genuinely meaning it. frankly, i understand none of that, and i wonder if its a usa cultural thing, i Do Not Get the anxiety over marriage etc.

oh and there was a forum thread by a 13 year old wondering if they're aromantic or a late bloomer. and a website mentioning asexuality vs late blooming but completely disregarding asexuality in the following sentences and just explaining all the ways someone can be a late bloomer and kind of implying that never "blooming" is not an option. pretty much like every other website except for the aro forum.

i don't even remember what my question was. right, why we keep being told that we are just late bloomers, and specifically why people are obsessed with the idea that i will fall in love some day which they seem to hold with religious conviction.

according to the definitions that i found, the only one that applies is that i was unpopular in highschool. i amn't now, not because i changed, but because i can choose my own social circles now and avoid the shallow and bigoted ones.

basically, none of the meanings i could find means that someone has None interest in sex and/or romance and spontaneously develops it later. if i had the concentration ability i would look into academic works to see if anything like this has been researched and how likely it even is, but suffice to say that it does not seem like a stretch to conclude that late blooming only means "your orientation is going to randomly change later" when people are trying to be arophobic or acephobic towards you.

A/N: the first of the transition

Armin fell in love with you really fast. It wasn’t conscious but it hit him faster than he’d ever expected and he didn’t see it coming. It was like one day you were you and the next day you were you. For some reason, everything you did that day had his heart pounding in his ribcage and his fingertips buzzing. The way your little hands fit so neatly into his as you pulled him towards the couch in your apartment he’d seen so many times, the way your eyes found his in conversation, and the way your smile spread across the entire room as you looked at him.

He was sure that he’d been in love with you for a while, probably since the first week he knew you and you scrunched up your nose at the idea of partner work. You two were fast friends after that first meeting, working long nights in the library to complete a general education course that required way too much effort. You’d bonded over coffee and hours of research and whether or not sweet coffee or bitter coffee was better (you still think the winner was sweet, Armin begs to differ). He probably fell in love with you at some point in those late nights, in between pages of research and your soft yawns as the library slowly wound down for the night.

So Armin couldn’t help it when he found himself staring at your lips and the way they parted gently as you watched the television screen. He watched the rise and fall of your chest as your shoulder rested softly against his and his heart couldn’t help but begin to pound when you laid your head on his shoulder. Armin could swear you’d hear it. But at least now, with the pounding of his chest, he knew he was in love with you. Armin had never been more sure of anything.

“You okay?” you asked, sitting up to meet his eyes, yours clouded with a playful worry.

“Hm?” That was all it took to snap him out of his daze, and he shook his head and responded, a genuine smile spreading across his lips. “Yeah, yeah I’m okay, I was just thinking.”

He doesn’t know where he found the courage, all Armin knew was that you were too far from him now. It was now one of his favorite past times, learning new words and phrases he could potentially use in the future. It worked for you both because it took his mind off the pain and kept him motivated, and since you could speak both his and your language, you could help him out whenever he got stuck on something.

Usually he did lessons verbally on his phone, but it seemed today he had taken the old fashioned route.

“Your handwriting really isn’t bad, Yoongs.” You observed, the carefully placed tails at the end of each ‘a’ making you smile out of fondness for the man.

“These look great, Hobi.” You smiled as you glanced over the first three he’d written, flawlessly executed on the document.

“Can you help me with the next one?” He wondered, you nodding your head as you took a seat on the stool next to his.

“What do you want the next one to say?” You asked, watching as he glanced off to the side in thought, slightly squinting his eyes at the tile floor beneath the sink.

“My house is next to,” He spoke in English, pausing as he searched his brain for what pronoun to put next.

“Theys?” He answered as more of a question, then shaking his head as he switched back to Korean, “wait, no.” He sighed, placing his chin in his hand in thought before glancing over to you.

“I know it’s wrong, I just don’t know what the right answer is instead.” He explained, you shooting him a loving smile as you pushed the dark raven hair off his forehead and pressed a kiss to the newly revealed skin.

“I’ll help you, Sunshine. No worries.”

jimin:

Flopping onto the bed, you let your tired body fall on top of Jimin’s hoodie clad chest, his arm encircling your body as he mumbled a soft greeting to you.

“Hm, what are you learning about today?” You nuzzled into his chest, peering at his phone propped up on his thigh.

“Animals. Birds, mostly.” He answered, briefly turning from the screen to press a kiss to your head before focusing back on the row of English words matched with pictures of popular birds glowing from the device.

The first was a robin, the next a blue jay, and then a dove.

You listened as the virtual instructor prompted Jimin to repeat after her, spelling out the letters before stating the whole word. You smiled as your boyfriend followed instruction, pronouncing the words the best he could after the microphone chimed for him to do so.

“D-o-v-e. Dove.”

“Dove.” He repeated, smiling to himself as the app announced he got the point with a little heart.

Honestly, Taehyung’s English wasn’t bad at all. He was insecure about it, but you’d never really understood what the reason for that feeling was. His vocabulary was more than decent, his comprehension was good, and his pronunciation was great for having such a thick accent.

But there were many times where Taehyung came to you for guidance, as you were a native English speaker yourself.

And so, as he rested his head on your shoulder confiding in you about everything he wanted to say and how he wanted to say it, you patiently took him through what would work and rhyme best, smiling as he hummed the melody to himself to see if the phrases would work in his creation.

jungkook:

“Baby, can you read it to me again before we go on? Just one more time.”

You glanced over at your boyfriend in his makeup chair, several employees bustling around the man as they attempted to get him ready to go on stage while they had him seated.

With his arm extended backward to where you stood behind his leather chair, he offered his phone to you while shooting you a grin through the reflection in the mirror.

Taking the device from his hand, you opened it to the notes app where he’d written what he wanted to say in his statement on stage in just a few minutes.

You were in London tonight, which meant that all of the boys had been rehearsing their English so that they could communicate easier with their audience.

Jungkook, ever the over-achiever, was determined to do the toughest English tongue twister he could possibly find. Not only that, but in a British accent for his British ARMY’s.

“Betty bought a bit of better butter to make her bitter butter better.” You read from the phone, barely able to read the sentence yourself before you glanced up at Jungkook through the mirror again.

You watched your boyfriend nod as his brain took in the words you’d just said, taking a deep inhale before he began speaking the phrase back to you.

You gawked as the man effortlessly repeated after you, a few of the makeup artists stopping as well as Jungkook raised his eyebrows back at you.

“Was that okay?”
