You might've answered something like this before but how do you pick colours for your art? Your choices are always so striking, visually interesting and delightful. I would love to learn your ways. (also hi)

WAAHHHH THANK YOU <3 <3 (also hi!!) first of all i do have a post from quite a while back with some general tips that you can check out, but my process has changed a bit since then so i can definitely elaborate a little bit more!

observation

this first tip is not very straightforward (sorry) but something i try to do is pay attention to the colors and lighting in the real world and try to remember what moments really stick with me. like when you're watching the sunset and the light from the sky washes everything in pink and tints the buildings orange, or when it's dusk and the light blue of the sky contrasts with the dark blues of everything that's in shadow, or looking in a lake and all the greens, browns, and blues mix together in rich jewel tones

i try to keep track of these things & the emotions they make me feel (almost like taking notes in a mental journal) so i can try referencing them when i want a certain drawing to feel a certain way. AGAIN this is really not straightforward and i don't really know how helpful it actually is...? but i find that observation can be a really helpful tool and i find myself doing it a lot

references

sort of the same as the last point BUT using preexisting photos and artwork instead! this one is more straightforward because you can actually reference them as you are drawing. i said this in the other post i made but i think that looking at other images and asking yourself "how is the artist/photographer using the colors to make it look this way? how do i recreate that?" and using that as a way to study their use of colors can be really helpful. if you find a drawing that has cool colors, try using those colors in your own drawings and see how they look!

that said, i would try to avoid color-picking things directly because i find that if you try choosing them on your own you 1) gain a better understanding of what you're doing 2) have more control over what you're doing and 3) you can "push" your colors in ways you might not if you color-pick directly

play with contrasting hues

i think this might just be a personal preference, but i find that i'm not as big of a fan of monochromatic images, and i prefer it when drawings utilize a wide variety of hues. this goes especially for ones that implement more contrast in the hues (not necessarily where the colors have more contrast in value, but rather contrast as in they're further apart on the color wheel)

for example, in this drawing, everything is washed in green light except for rose's skin, which is a very saturated reddish-brown. this is sort of what i mean by "pushing" the colors because, in a realistic setting, a person sitting in green lighting is going to have a more greenish-looking skin tone (like in this drawing). you can see this in how the whites of the drawing—her hair and eyes—are greenish, but i made the stylistic choice to not do the same with her skin to create contrast between the two hues

i edited the one on the bottom to match the green-ness of the rest of the image, and the effect is pretty noticeable! green light makes people look less lively, almost sickly (which is good to use if that's the feeling you want to show, of course)

another small example of this is in this drawing where i use a couple of different hues in davesprite's body. overall, it registers as orange, but i like to ever-so-slightly introduce a bit of green to contrast with the orange, letting the lightest values tip into the greens instead of stopping at yellow to contrast with the muted red in the wings. the darkest values are purple, which also contrasts with the yellow parts. the only hue missing from this image is blue! the colors are all still analogous, and the greens and purples are a lot less saturated than the oranges and yellows, so nothing clashes and overall leads to a more subtle contrast

the colors on the top are the ones from the image, while the ones on the bottom i see used a lot more commonly—which isn't a bad thing! i just think it looks nice to use a wide range of hues because of the way they complement each other :)

other than these strategies, my process varies greatly depending on what i'm working on, so it's difficult to get any more specific than this (unless you'd like to ask about the process of a specific drawing!) there isn't really any step-by-step method i use for every drawing i make, usually i am doing something different each time based on the goals i have for the project

EXCUSE THE LONG COMMENT/RANT BUT UMMM... LET ME SPEAK ON THIS!!

So like, I run the MagicalGirloftheDay page on Twitter and the negativity from fans on there is beyond draining. It is to the point where I have considered leaving several times because people do these things constantly:

1. Constantly beg for me to recommend them titles. Here's the thing - I have posted girls from EVERYTHING. Anime, manga, visual novels, commericials, American, Korean, etc cartoons. Name it and I have posted a character from it. People could easily search the page of what I posted, but instead dm me things like, "wahhh, Precure is too immature for me!" and then go on a rant in my dms at 7AM to then be like, "Can you recommend me titles?" Fuck off, please.

The first two or three times is one thing, but when people are too lazy to find media and always ask me for recommendations (or even links to idk, books on people in the anime industry who have worked on magical girl titles they can Google themselves to purchase), it gets really annoying.

2. Claiming that "Madoka/[insert show here] ruined the genre!!" or other complaints to get my attention. It is clear I find these opinions reductive, but followers eagerly want me to agree with them, so they come to me about this stuff for attention. LISTEN - none of the shows before Madoka or after it stopped existing. You want to enjoy the genre? Stop being lazy and complaining about titles and go on Google. Stop spamming me with, "do other magical girl mecha shows exist? Does mature mahou shoujo exist? Are there any with [×]?" SEARCH IT UP.

3. Demand that the genre is not doing enough, even though several titles diverge from dark material, or have LGBT representation, etc. The "MADOKA RUINED THE GENRE WAAHHHH!!!" crowd highly exaggerated, as it was only 6 shows including PMMM itself that fell under that category. 3 of them are no longer running, with one that had severe issues even getting recognition to the point where plot details are only really listed on a site for the show itself (Daybreak Illusion.) Magical Girl Site has been highly criticized, to the point where it is rare to even find fans of online anymore out in the open.

As for representation, if the only show you're looking at is Precure then yeah, I guess you would miss out on things like black characters, lesbian, gay, bi, or trans ones, or even characters with autism, ADHD, etc. There are several Western comics and games featuring such aspects, such as Adorned by Chi (now on hiatsu to my knowledge), Mahou Josei Chimaka, Vampire Magicka, and even Witch Hat Atelier features black characters. Magical Girl Warrior Diamond Heart has a black girl as its protagonist, who has ADHD, along with one party member with autism, and three trans characters who are part of the main cast. Even when you look into older majokko titles you had Little Witch Parfait, a game from 1999 that has yuri. Even one of its follow up games, Little Witch Reinette, focuses on romancing Parfait, her close friend.

But, you know, since magical girl fans aren't actually interested in untranslated titles, or anything that is not a nostalgia title (Sailor Moon, for example) or Precure, I get to see a lot of complaints and accusations like this. I have even heard, "WE NEED MORE MAGICAL BOYS!!" and I made a collage of at least 100 of them and there are several more where those came from.

And it's not just Twitter that's like this, either. I've seen whiners on Tumblr and Reddit as well, who would rather scream about fanservice anime. Years ago it was regarding shows like Moetan (one that isn't even really popular, nor do most care about), but now MahoAko and some others get flak. You don't have to like these shows, but there is no need to whine about them nonstop. Again, you can easily find things you like, but magical girl fans LOVE instead to choose to be upset over goofy stuff that they can easily disengage from.

I've never seen a more divided and boring/linear fanbase, either - it's to the point people have told me "only the girls who fight count", or "magical girl idols don't count", "Cutie Honey doesn't count", and I guess now otome games don't either. It's a fandom that will never be satisfied cause the fans who are loudest never welcome change, hate everything, and refuse to do actual research/read up on the actual genre they claim to love so much.

Like, when people began telling me MACROSS DELTA was a magical girl idol series but people refuse to even watch Creamy Mami, Fancy Lala, Waccha PriMagi!, etc, actual magical girl idol series... that's when I knew it's all a bunch of bs.

Like this is all people who like follow accounts dedicated to magical girl news asking where all the wholesome shows went. I have mutuals that sit up and post news every single day and their replies are full of ppl complaining about madoka and pervert shows 💀

You got your bit in the family ties episode where you went sweets crazy and almost became human. Besides the only reason there was negativity was because Alya was being stupid. She just admitted as much. Please. My heart's having enough trouble with the promise of Marichat, it can't take in depth character development too.

Wait... Has Marinette still not told Alya about Chat Blanc? There's no way the kwamis remember Ephemeral so that has to be what Tikki is talking about right? Are you telling me this girl could still be having nightmares about her akumatised kitty and Alya has no idea? Mari, baby, you're breaking my heart here...

Dev Blog # 17

Hello friends! Happy October! Might as well throw this out here, but the rest of the year is about to get super busy for me (and I’m guessing that’s probably the story for a lot of people so AWESOME, here’s to all of us being productive 🎉)

Aside from art (the rest of sprites and alternative outfits + the backgrounds that I’m dragging my feet in editing and coding in, waahhhh) and proofreading/edits, my goal is to be 100% done with HSD:JY. Yes that includes temp music and SFX oh God help Meaning? If I were to place it on itch.io and make it live, I would not die of embarrassment at what y’all see and interact with. Might even be proud!

Also, if I commit to and accomplish this, I can give a release date that isn't “Winter 2022″! Given my track record, you guys might see it much earlier than that, but we will revisit all of this come Jan 2022, cool?

I thought about doing a current breakdown but it wouldn’t mean anything now? The game’s been written for almost a year now, everything writing wise is coded in, so I just have to make sure it’s readable. Also, the endings “screen” is in there, could look better, but it’s in there. #Updates 😎🤘🏽

I present to you, our rival and adversary for Ryan’s affections* (oops, there goes my bias again 😗) Vanessa Cross! While she wasn’t inspired by anybody specifically, I’m pretty proud of the fact that I was able to write her character and interactions convincingly (says my sister, a high school senior at the time of game creation and bouncing off ideas, so maybe take my pat on the back with a grain of salt LOL ).

I started to ship Clouis (like really, really ship them) around Episode 2, when he immediately ran to help them when they got back to school. Idk why that moment, it was just nice.

Their dynamic is one of my favourites. The tough one and the goofball. They balance each other well, reminding each other that there are things worth fighting for and that sometimes it’s more than okay to take a break and have fun.

What makes me happy about them:

Just the idea of two young kids falling for each other. I’m a sucker for young love.

The only thing that comes to mind (and I don’t see it being done anymore) is when people would write Louis as an idiot, a jokester who never takes anything seriously. Sure the guy plays around, but he knows when to take action and support people.

The trio’s pace gradually slowed. Eggnog appeared to have spotted an acquaintance, and he ran ahead of Rice and Turkey. Turkey and Rice were unconcerned and followed him at a leisurely speed.

Turkey: Rice, Rice, what exactly IS this sacred wine that we’re searching for? Why is it so valuable?

Rice: The sacred wine, that the Divine Lord gave us, is said to, have the effect, of granting humans, immortality. The reason, the Divine Lord, is able to live so long, is because of, this wine.

Turkey: Wow! That sounds amazing! No wonder everyone wants it!

Rice: Yes, but, for this festival, there’s only one jar. The Divine Lord, will give it to, the luckiest person, at the festival.

Turkey: The luckiest person?

Rice: Mm-hm, during the fireworks display, at the end, of the festival, the Divine Lord, will select one, lucky person, and give them, the sacred wine.

Turkey: Then we ought to hurry, there isn’t much time until the fireworks display.

The two of them were caught up in their conversation, and didn’t notice that several dark shadows were creeping up behind them. Eggnog, standing not too far away, waved at the pair.

Eggnog: Hey- You two, come quickly! There’s a jar here, too! Turkey! Look who it is!

Turkey: Champagne--! You’re here too!!!

Champagne: You came too, chickadee? Want to compete with me at marksmanship?

The trio looked where Champagne was pointing. The shopkeeper at the shooting arcade had his face buried in his hands and was sobbing bitterly. Champagne and the Food Souls beside him had all sorts of dolls and toys piled up around their feet.

Rice: Shopkeeper, why, are you crying?

Stall Owner: Waaahhhh, I’m ruined, ruined! I have to give them all of those dolls, I won’t recoup my overhead this time.

The people standing in front of the stall didn’t stop what they were doing on account of the shopkeeper’s wailing.

Champagne: At first glance, I wouldn’t have thought a girl like you would be such a precise marksman.

Black Tea: You’re not bad yourself. Shall we continue? The game is tied.

Napoleon: Don’t forget about me, you two! This round, my score is even higher than yours.

Stall Owner: Waaaahhh, I’m begging you guys, just go, I’ll give you the Divine Lord’s vitality wine! Stop the competition!

Turkey: Champagne, what kind of competition is this?

Champagne: Shooting. I finally found some people who can keep up with me, so of course I’m gonna make the most of this opportunity and play to my heart’s content.

Black Tea: It truly is rare to come across opponents like Champagne and Napoleon.

Napoleon: Thank you for your compliment, Miss Black Tea. However, I can’t compare to Mr. Champagne!

Champagne: You two are pretty good as well!

Turkey: ….Eggnog… what are they doing?

Eggnog: Shh… study them well. This is what’s known as “mutual back-patting”.

Rice: ...Um…

Eggnog: What’s up, Rice?

Rice: Um, I want, to warn you… those three, are staring right, at you....

Champagne, who had already acknowledged the trio, strode towards Turkey, stretched out a hand, and vigorously mussed his hair.

Turkey: Oww!---Don’t noogie me! It obviously wasn’t me who said that! If you need to get revenge, give Eggnog a noogie!!!

As the three continued their competition, the pile of dolls at their feet grew larger, gradually becoming a small mountain.

Eggnog: Champagne, that’s enough. If you guys keep playing, the shopkeeper won’t be able to make a living.

Champagne: No way! I need to convince these two that they’ve lost!

Black Tea: I won’t admit defeat!

Napoleon: I won’t lose to you guys!

Champagne: But according to the current tally, my score really is a bit higher than either of yours.

Black Tea: That’s because you had a head start of several shots.

Eggnog: Every one of your shots hit a doll worth the same number of points If you continue like this, how will it ever end? There’s just no way to determine the winner!

Champagne: I can end it.

Eggnog: Ugh… shopkeep, I did my best…

Stall Owner: Waahhhh…

The three marksmen finally noticed the shopkeeper, who’d been crying for so long that he’d run out of tears. They were suddenly at a loss for what to do. At that moment, a pile of wine jars suddenly appeared, breaking the awkward atmosphere.

Eggnog: Why did so many wine jars suddenly appear?

Rice: These are, Wine Jars.

Eggnog: I know that. But why are there so many?

Turkey: Is it the sacred wine? Waah! They’re moving!

Rice: These are, Fallen Angels!

The trio who had been immersed in their shooting competition narrowed their eyes, turned their heads to look at the group of Fallen Angels, and flashed “warm” smiles.

Champagne: Haha, it’s a good thing you came~

Champagne: Live, moving targets will be a lot more interesting than these dolls.

[Battle ends]

Before Turkey and Eggnog could make a move, the group of Fallen Angels that had suddenly appeared were scattered in all directions by a hail of fire from the three marksmen’s weapons.

Black Tea: I have eight over here.

Napoleon: I also have eight! Champagne?

Champagne: Nine! Finally! This time, you have to admit that I won!

Black Tea: ...All right. A bet’s a bet, I’ll give you all of these stuffed animals.

Napoleon: I’ll give you mine, too! Hey! B-52! When did you run all the way over there?!?

B-52: ….

Napoleon: I’m leaving, I’m leaving!
