Scorpion: He watched the movie by accident. Some of his teen students put the movie on, and he decided to join them. He doesn’t understand why they make those stupid faces or why his students try to recreate them.

Sub-Zero: He has a much better sense of humor than Hanzo, and he laughs with his students instead of watching the movie in horror. He's not into memes, but he is into a good laugh.

Johnny: He owns the lightskin stare. He was initially cast to play Derek Zoolander but got into a fight with the director, and as a result, he was fired. He does the magnum on the battlefield, to see if he can stop the bullets. Sonya or Jax push him aside every time. 

Sonya: She has to hear Johnny brag about how he was fired unjustly. She also has to see him doing the looks. He claims he does them better than Ben, but for her both of them look like idiots. 

Jax: he competes with Johnny for the best "blue steel." He knows where the memes come from and is very disappointed that the music is not the same. He and Johnny do a walk-off when Sonya is not watching. 

Cassie Cage: She saw the movie multiple times, and had no choice but to listen to her father bragging about how he was robbed of the role. She is making a bunch of memes and gains followers super quick. 

Jacqui Briggs: She is not that hyped about the movie but will join in a look contest. She will make memes along with Cassie and comfort Johnny when he starts to whine about how he lost the role. 

Kung Lao: he tries to do the boxer trick but ends up in the ER instead. Liu Kang filmed the whole thing and sent it to everyone. Despite his embarrassment, he performed a "blue steel" and now has a date with a nurse. 

Liu Kang: he has the best "blue steel" out of everyone, but he is humble and won’t brag about it. Kitana likes the look in secret, but she won't tell him that. He enjoyed the movie and recommends it to other monks. 

Kano: he auditioned for the role of Mugatu. He would have gotten the part if they hadn't called in the special forces after checking his background.

Erron: Kabal showed him the movie because he didn’t understand the memes. He thought it was a waste of time, but sometimes he’ll try to do the "blue steel" when he’s trying to flirt when he’s alone in front of a mirror. 

Jade: She didn’t know about the memes or the movie. The whole fuckery confuses her, but she likes the actors, so she’ll watch the movie. She now understands why Kung Lao and Liu Kang make silly faces, which they call "magnum," "ferrari," or "le tigre."

Kitana: loved the movie and thought it was hilarious, but I won’t admit it. She doesn’t know most of the celebrities that appear in the movie, but she has a crush on Hans. Cassie will provide her with more movies of Owen Willson. 

Kotal Kahn: he will chuckle at some scenes but remain stoic during the rest of the movie. Male modeling is a weird concept for him, and while he’d admire Hans and Derek’s physiques, he’ll say that those will be of better use in a fight rather than on a stage. 

Quan-chi: ok, but how did they put a router in the Netherrealm? must be an expensive plan. Either way, as the souls of the damned scream in agony, Quan-chi will laugh with joy at the many hilarious scenes. He mastered the "magnum" and is waiting eagerly for a face-off with Liu Kang. 

Shao Kahn: I loved the idea of the looks and will try to recreate them. Everyone will say that he is the best because they don’t want to die. After that, he decided that the next tournament shouldn’t be based on fighting, but on walk-offs and looks. It will be an interesting discussion with the Elder Gods, for sure. 

Raiden: He’ll watch the whole madness that this movie caused and ask himself if it's still worth anything for them. Everyone makes the same stupid face and makes "memes" instead of focusing on fighting. Damn it, Fujin joined the madness too and is doing "blue steel" with Johnny and Jax. Imagine his face upon hearing Shao Kahn's proposal lol.

Fujin: Ma Man provides a gentle breeze for anyone trying to look like they're in the movie. He loved the movie, and he’s trying to master the looks when Raiden is not looking. 

Shang Tsung: He is grateful once again that he left Earthrealm, as it seems the trends don’t arrive in Outworld either. However, this hype train arrived at full speed, so now instead of using advanced sorcery, he’ll have to defeat Liu Kang in a walk-off. It's time to get back to his younger self and start exercising.

Character Evolution in Secrets of Sulfur Springs

This is about casting and physical attributes, not about development. This is about a show I truly love, and not one that I hate. These are all observations and thought processing about the casting of the Tremont/Dunn family in the series.

Daisy: Kyliegh Curran | Ashley B. Jones

So! Our girlie Kyliegh played her great grandmother (or great great grandmother? - I forget, Daisy, as a kid) And, I was like, "Well... it's not perfect.

You can't tell how much darker this woman is than Kylie in her photos, but on the show, she looked a tinge too dark for me to fully invest in the idea that she was well cast, but I rationalized that maybe she was inside more as a kid and then you know, was just lightskint like a light skinned biracial because of that when she was young. (I have met people whose parents tried keeping them inside on sunny days so they wouldn't get too dark), which is wild and off topic, because I don't think that would happen with Daisy, but saying IF she was simply inside a lot more as a kid, she could be that much lighter than the child actress vs the adult actress.

Harper's mama is biracial, I think. I feel like the kid that played her mom is, though Idk if the lady is or not. I do know that Kylie's character is supposed to be fully Black, even though the actress is not, irl. And her ancestor, Daisy, who she played had two pretty unambiguously Black parents and her and her little brother came out light skinned. Him, looking like his mama, her looking like the milkman's child..

Grace (Daisy's Mom): Kenneisha Thompson

Now... this happens sometimes in real life. But like I've said before - it don't happen nearly as much irl as it do on TV. So, Kyliegh as that woman - meh. Not a great casting choice, if not a bad one.

I understand they needed them to be identical to make the plot work, but I don't understand why everybody in the family is clearly Black then come her, actually biracial, and then here she come again a couple generations later, as Harper. Lol.

Her mama though Jess Dunn: Izabela Rose | Diandra Lyle

They did better in skin tone, but I would love sometimes for productions, especially big money bitches to try to do some side by sides every now and then and be like, "Are we sure this is the right choice?" or acknowledge some of the wild changes.

Where is a wide nosed sista to play this mama? Did she get a nose job at some point? We just supposed to imagine her nose was always that dainty? It has nothing to do with the plot, but Idk how I would overlook that you have such a drastically different nose in your adult like than you did as a kid. Her grandmother had a wide nose (scroll up) and she had one as a kid, then it just... went small when she grew up?

I am a big nosed bitch... and my nose was SMALLER as a child, because I was smaller. I actually was quite aware of Izabela's nose when she was Young Jess because we were going back and forth in time, from her nose to Diandra's nose. BEAUTIFUL WOMAN! They are both so lovely. They just do not look like people who grew up to be that person! Ma'am you didn't contour away all that nose. (I love both these actresses).

The fact that I dwell on this casting has nothing to do with their performances and everything to do with how badly I want casting to try to get people who actually look alike when they are playing the same character, unless for some reason within the story, they somehow look different. This Is Us only magnified my fixation on this subject. Most of them people looked just like them kids.

But like we said, we rationalizing that Mama Dunn is biracial, or at the very least so lightskinned that a biracial girl could be her daughter, especially since her negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils turned into one of them Vogue magazine joints in her adult life.

It's just absurd. This is where we gotta draw the line, throw in the towel, stop rationalizing that there is a phenotype at play skipping generations or whatever else we could do with our earlier casting choices.

This photo is lighter than the woman is and you can still see that this is a whole nother human that would not in this universe that we currently know of, under any circumstances according to our knowledge of science, would this beautiful biracial baby girl grow up to be this absolutely unambigously Black, dark skinned woman!! She just wouldn't!

Two very lovely people who acted they asses off and earned them Disney paychecks and Disney better had paid them what they was worth. Because they both said that they was gon' out act whoever in this scene when Ruby got onscreen.

Whoever did this casting said, "F**k it, Girl. Call who we know," because ain't no way, Chile. Ain't no way y'all was putting no kinda thought or planning into this woman growing up from that girl. When she said she was Ruby, I said, "RUBY WHOOOOOO?"

I won't go into any further tangent about how the darkest ones cast in the family were the ones we didn't see much of, or in Ruby's case, the literal Magical Negro that had to save the day........................

I truly enjoy the show. It's a fave. But, yes. It has it's issues and I have mine and now that they are out of my head, because as a wise friend once said, "Misery loves an audience" (Shoutout to Noah, a Queen of Quotes) - I can now live in peace. Yes, and continue watching this, even though they have this problem in casting.

Sometimes, people think that colorblind casting only applies to when you just cast anybody for any role, willy-nilly, but this is an offset of colorblind casting, as well. Colorism casting, maybe. Where any Black person will do, despite looking nothing like the same character that they're supposed to be portraying. Or where certain skin tone versions of that character has more screen time. The Bridgerton fandom is really unsettling. I only got back into fandom for S2 for the first time in years and I forgot how detached from reality people can be and it really kills the fun. In particular, so many people have this resentment for Charithra because she also does show promo and gets magazine covers et cetera? I didn’t like show Edwina very much, but the ire for the actress is so strange and uncalled for. And they have this conspiracy theory that the show hates it’s female leads (??) and has a vendetta against Phoebe and Simone. It makes me uneasy to see them compared because lbr Simone has it infinitely harder than a white actress and I can’t recall how Phoebe was ever shafted. The public favored RJP but that was inevitable. If anything because S1 was less of an ensemble she got more of a lead treatment than Simone. It’s all just very weird and reeks of fans only wanting one POC (Simone) to get any spotlight.

Yeah honestly. Every fandom has its issues, it's just that this fandom... I try to just... not... go into the tags for anything but edits, but... The shit is truly wild. Here's the thing with the promo the show does. I would agree with people who say that Simone has not necessarily gotten the consistent shine she deserved, but like... I'm gonna look at how the show boosted Claudia and Nicola more than how it boosted Charithra, tbh. Charithra was integral to the main plot. Charithra was new. And frankly? Charithra has a sizable role on the a major TV show, she did a great job, and she's an Indian woman who is not lightskinned, which means that she would have a tricky time getting hired in almost any major film industry. I'm fucking GOOD with Charithra getting shine, and you can support Simone without tearing Charithra down. "But I just want Simone to get her dues" lmao... If you're commenting on every video featuring Simone, Charithra, and JB with "get rid of Charithra", it's not about uplifting Simone, it's about tearing down the person who isn't Simone OR JB.

There are super valid, serious issues Simone is facing as a dark-skinned South Asian woman in TV and film. When you go from "Simone's not getting her shine" to "just like Phoebe", I know you aren't checking for those issues. i think what's made us have diverging opinions on this matter is the fact that i didn't know paper girls is an adaptation of a comic book. i don't even watch the show. i sent the original ask because i looked at images of tiffany on google and have watched stranger things (erica is one of my favorite characters, the other one being argyle) and agreed with the op instead of your reply.

im also of the opinion that people will always look like other people, there's no getting around that. we have a limited gene pool and there's only so many variations you can make by mixing and matching that incredibly unique faces are really really rare (i'd say steve buscemi has the only unique face in hollywood - at least off the top of my head).

im not upset at people in my hometown mistaking me for my mother since we look really similar (we sound similar too, everyone double checks if it's her or me picking up a phone). im also not upset at people constantly mistaking me for a different girl when i moved to my uni town because we looked very similar. never met the girl before then, we're 100% not related in any way.

so story time. like ok even though I grew up with a very racially diverse family ppl used to insist I had a doppelganger and it used to mess with my head because the girl (although I'm p sure she was half mexican versus my full mexican from both sides) they thought looked like me was just fat and had frizzy hair like me. which like ok?? my lips are bigger my nose is bigger we had different interests. and more importantly I got the feeling when we were in college that people used to tell her the same thing. Like I'm fairly lightskinned.

Like I have a lot of privilege in terms of colorism and I hated being compared to another person constantly throughout middleschool high school and my first few years of college. but the thing is this experience is not unique to me and I can prove it. my mom who's seventy now constantly compares all black men to my 2 black uncles that married into the family despite significant differences in height, weight, features, and hair. I've tried telling both my mom and dad (he does some similar stuff) about anti blackness they obviously have. and like I know they passed it on to me and my sister. but like its frustrating because they're so old now its just an uphill battle.

so like while I don't constantly have to deal with people mistaking me for other ppl as much now I do remember how shitty it feels to constantly be compared to others just because ppl can't be bothered to get to know me for who I am.

one more story before I let this go. when I was in college I actually had a work friend that I started bringing around to my friends gatherings. mind you my friends and I all went to high school and middle school together. I had history with them. but this work friend was also an alicia. instead of calling me alicia #1 (because I was previously the only Alicia they knew) or her blonde alicia they started calling me Mexican Alicia. Mind you this went on for years and it got to the point that I had to cut ties with the majority of them because I was really feeling tokenized and belittled. before I cut ties with them I tried to get them to call me Ali instead but still some of them insisted on calling me Mexican Alicia.

this is very painful for me to talk about but like there's a reason that "faceblindness" and racism go hand in hand. if you live in a white majority country you're trained to think of whites as the norm and everyone else is othered.

tldr: In all these situations it's shitty to assume that constant comparisons with other people is really so innocent. despite my lightskinned privilege I've learned and witnessed that dark skinned Black people have it even worse than I do. and like that just breaks my heart.

oof, feeling ya on the whole mixed race gatekeeperey thing. im mixed, was denied any connection to my nonwhite culture growing up, and pass as white (depending on the person). because of this, i feel like i have no right to connect with my nonwhite roots, but at the same time i cant relate to white people that much because im mixed. it’s a lonely feeling sometimes, and i just wish that there was less horribleness surrounding the whole issue. im mostly angry at white people for going in and stomping all over minority cultures to the point where they feel the gatekeeping is necessary, but i feel like us mixed people get lumped in with that and shut out of our own cultures. its a sticky issue and im glad to see someone else talking about it.

It's an awful place to be in- there is understandable anger and frustration about how white people have treated POC but at the same time the mixed kids have similarly no control over who their parents are or how they look or what traits they got handed. And unfortunately the more muddy the waters the more unfair it becomes.

My sister, who is a visibly black woman, brought her son to a black history month event a few years ago. When she asked to buy a shirt for him, she was told to her face that the event was not for white people. Her son was what I would consider white-passing at the time, though as he has aged he's becoming more ambiguous especially compared to his visibly black, though fairly lightskinned, sister who was not yet born at the time. But my sister is clearly, obviously a black woman, and both she and her son were rejected based on a conditional test of his shade of skin. She cannot help that her son came out light skinned and blonde. It's not as though she deliberately restricted her dating and marrying pool to white men, she's dated black men in the past prior to marrying her white husband. And I thought we were over combing over people's past partners for "proof" of acceptable-enough dating history to "count" as [xyz]-friendly.

But then at the same time, my sister has suffered antiblack racism and the lovely intersection of antiblackness and misogyny since she was her kids' age. So my sister is not black enough to be accepted at a black event with her white-passing son, but is black enough to be repeatedly attacked and to know her very existence was illegal and caused her mother to be disowned by her racist white family. She's black enough to be rejected by her husband's family who disowned him the second he told them he was marrying a black woman.

And her son, who is apparently not black enough to be able to have a shirt bought for him at a black event, is too black for his father's family to accept him as his father's son. Too black for him to not be attacked at school and have his blackness quoted as a reason. Too black for strangers on the street to not shout slurs at him while he walks with his other black family members. But he's not black enough for his darker skinned mother to be recognized as his mother, either. Someone accused my sister of stealing someone's baby, most people assumed she was nannying a white woman's baby, until her visibly black daughter was born and her white-passing son became more racially ambiguous.

It's a mess. There's no winning. I think her kids will have an easier time than we did, growing up. But I think they'll also likely carry some resentment towards racial attitudes of all sides, like we struggled with, because of what is already happening to them. Neither of these kids are anywhere near double digits and yet they are already being forced to choose between being white vs being black and neither answer seems good enough for society at large.

Ok,, so I have kinda curly hair and I love it so I wanna take care of it right? I’m mixed, my mom is black and I got my curls from her,, so when I go to sleep I usually wrap it in a scarf but every time I do I feel really guilty because I feel like that’s something that black girls do and I’m not black and I don’t wanna do anything wrong but at the same time I don’t want my curls to fuck up during the night.

I just don’t wanna offend anybody or do anything wrong.

Alright, darlin. I had to hop on here to tell you I know EXACTLY how you feel. And it is a really... really shitty feeling. 

Number 1 - you. are. black. You’re one of us, love. I am also mixed. I’m black, brown, and white. I’m light skinned but I have 3b-3c curls and I lived most of my life with the brown/white side of my family, thinking I was whitepassing (spoiler alert: I’m not. I’m just delusional lmfao). And because of this, I always struggled with my identity. 

Growing up with my brown/white side, they never knew how to take care of my hair. I’d get it chemically straightened and relaxed, my curls brushed out and generally tended to with absolutely no idea how to handle it (I have a LOT of hair). It wasn’t until college (and youtube) that I began to learn how to take care of it and also come to terms with the fact that even though I always thought I looked white, absolutely NO ONE ELSE DID. But getting rid of the view that Im not dark enough or ‘black enough’ was so fucking toxic and it wormed its way into my brain in a way that I STILL struggle with.

In college I avoided joining the BSU because I didn’t think I would be welcome. I didn’t think I fit in. And even though I still very much experience microaggressions and racism, I’m also very aware that being lightskinned, I have privilage over my darker skinned brothers and sisters. So even though by my senior year I was aware of that, and I definitely identified more and more with my black side, i didn’t think anyone else would - completely ignoring the fact that many of my friends were black, part of the BSU, and saw me as one of them. 

When I finally joined, there was no questions like I thought there’d be. Like ‘why’s the mixed girl here’ nothing LIKE THAT. The president of the BSU and one of my friends interviewed me one day for her thesis surrounding black hair. I expressed how growing up I didn’t know how to take care of my hair and that now I was scared of tying my hair in a scarf, or getting braids, or doing twists. I thought that my black peers and friends might see me as culturally appropriating them because I still thought people looked at me and saw anything but black. 

She looked at me like I was fucking crazy. She looked at me dead in the eyes like she knew I needed to hear it and said ‘Tiara. You. Are. Black. And you should do whatever is healthiest for YOUR hair.’ 

I never forgot that. It stuck with me. And it was like all my friends noticed how screwed my own mental image was and took me under their wing. 

4 years later and I still sometimes struggle. Mainly because I am very aware of taking up room in black spaces because of the fact that I do have the privilege of being light. 

But being lightskinned and mixed doesnt make me any less black. Sometimes I think my friends know that I still sometimes feel like I don’t deserve to celebrate my own fucking culture or history. Jeni has definitely slapped sense into me on several occassions when I didn’t know if I should promote myself as a black creator. 

But I am. 

Because I am.

And that brings me to this.

No matter what, you should do whats best for your hair. If that means wearing a scarf or a satin bonnet, then DO IT. (Definitely the bonnet. I cant sleep without it). If that means protecting your hair with protective styles like twists or braids or wigs or scarves, then DO IT. Every single winter and most of the summer, I put my hair into mini twists and it’s greatly affected the health of my hair and you know what? I feel fucking amazing when I do it and not one person has questioned me or tried to stop me or told me that I can’t or that I’m appropriating or offending anyone because I’m not. And it’s MY culture, too. 

And you know what babe? It’s YOUR culture, too. So you do whatever you need to do for your hair. You do what makes you feel happiest and healthiest and most confident. I swear as soon as I started doing what was best for me and learning more about my hair, and really feeling welcome in my own culture, I was far better off and other people saw it too.

Many years have passed since the defeat of Horde Prime. Everyone has settled down and started families. All seems well until Micah takes in the familiar student who shakes up Etheria as old ghosts return from the past.

Kazari/They-Kho(She/They) (19)

Kazari is a transfer student from Planet Xiseaus, under Micah’s tutelage. Kazari is constantly at odds with Catra and especially Adora. She is a bit of an asshole and has a habit of getting herself and others into trouble. Still, for all this, Kazari is a genuinely good soul with everyone’s best interests at heart.

Finn (They/Them) (18)

Finn is the son the Catra and Adora.(My version of Finn is more masc. presenting, so they wore something like a red neck bandana and a white seth rollins-style vest and black trousers) They had a deal with a lot of bullshit, chiefly Adora’s manic-depressive episodes and PTSD fueled freak outs, as well as clinginess and overbearingness. Still, Finn loves both their mothers very much, but while they try to stay positive, they’ve become quite jaded.

Iyexi (She/Her) (18)

Her name is a pun off the phrase .EXE. Iyexi is the daughter of Hordak and Entrapta. Pretty much an strange goth girl with the

Archer is the son of Glimmer and Bow. Imagine a lightskinned Lil Nas X but with Glimmer’s hair. He wants to live up to his parents legacy, much to their chagrin, as they want Archer to make his own way in life.

Daughter of Seahawk and Mermista. A mermaid-pirate princess who wants to decide whether to be a pirate or a princess.

Adora (40s)

Everything was supposed to be fine after the war, but things can’t be that simple. Adora was still a child soldier in a war, and the events of the Horde Prime saga had left her with severe PTSD and Manic Depression. Sometimes she is able to control it, but she has suffered some very public freakouts. Still Adora tries to be a good person and she loves her family very much, has even managed to get a handle on her mental health. She has an antagonistic relationship with Kazari, and things get especially complicated when something happens to Catra.

Catra(She/Her)(40s)

Somehow, someway, Catra was mentally able to recover the most from the war, she had even found it within herself to forgive Shadow Weaver after many years. Along with Bow, Catra seems to have her shit together, until she comes down with leukemia and has to leave Etheria to take care of it. 

Queen Glimmer/MoonDust(She/Her)(40s)

The current queen of brightmoon has tried many times to reabjegate to throne back to Angella, but she refused each time. Glimmer has been trying to run to kingdom, and while she’s done reasonably well, the pressures have caused her lingering trauma to manifest as a slightly psychotic alter-ego named MoonDust (Parody of WWEs Stardust character). 

King Bow(He/Him)(40s)

He’s doing his best. While a bit more emotional, he and Catra has the dubious honor of being the only ones with their shit together.

Retro Adora(She/Her)

From the 80s cartoon, Retro Adora is a constant visitor of the main dimension. She is known for relentlessly pursuing her world’s Catra and being functionally Finn’s aunt! There is a running gag that when she says “I am She-Ra!” someone always says “WE CAN PERFECTLY SEE THAT!” to which Retro Adora responds with a snide remark

Mara(She/Her)

Thanks to mysterious magic, Mara, as well as the other She-Ras were resurrected. While most of them found refuge on what used to be Beast Island. Mara is content with staying with Razz and being Finn’s godmother. Mara knows something about about Kazari that nobody else does
