it took you five whole minutes to pack us up and leave me with it, holdin' all this love out here in the hall... i can see you staring honey, like he's just your understudy
part four of capthamm’s captain swan’s folklore read on ao3 / read the ao3 series
Killian ignores the look of pity etched across Robin’s face as he pours another shot. Robin’s stern looks are just another reminder that his life has turned into a literal three ring circus.
Alright, not a literal one but his point remains. He just wishes he was playing the part of ring leader and not the sad clown.
Killian’s train of thought is derailed at the sound of her voice. He can’t tell what she’s saying, and against his better judgement he glances towards where she sits. As she places her hand on his shoulder, Killian swears the same spot on his own burns white hot. It’s then that he slams the shot, the rum no longer burning as it coats his throat, as he catches Robin shaking his head out of the corner of his eye.
Pathetic.
As Killian gets up to leave, Neal shoots him a grateful look while she’s distracted by something on her phone. He grimaces in response and attempts to tune out Neal’s carefully rehearsed line as he pushes on the door of the old pub.
“Neal, I can't dance,” she protests. “Nonsense, there's only one rule, pick a partner—“
The door slams but Killian’s mind is apt to finish the sentence on it’s own— he is the one who came up with it after all.
Disgruntled, he shoves his hands in his pockets and begins the cold walk home, leaving his car to be retrieved in the morning once his libations wear thin— assuming he lets them. His mind can't help but wonder what other tips Neal used on his date with Emma tonight. He had advised his old friend not to use them all in one evening, but chances are Neal will be knocking on his door in the morning wondering what the next steps are and how Killian would go about taking them.
How in the hell did he end up here?
Two months ago, it would’ve been Killian in that booth, Emma’s hand lightly touching his bicep as conversation flows easily between them. As quickly as it began, their entire thing came to a screeching halt. Before he could fathom what happened, Neal was at the docks begging Killian to help now that Emma finally asked him out.
He’d never suffocated before but he’s positive it’d feel startlingly similar to the pain he felt as he processed what Neal had said.
Fourteen days. Five kisses. Two secret dates. That was all he got with Emma Swan before she decided (much like many other women in his life) that he was better left a friend than loved as more. If they’re even friends anymore. He can’t say he blames her, he just wishes he knew why. Their friendship had always developed with ease, many of their mutual acquaintances supposedly taking bets for how long it’d be until it formed into something more. No one won, because no one even knew it happened. Not to mention Emma and Killian moved at their own pace and waited 16 years after meeting to give it a go.
Her pinky wraps with his, “Promise me we are friends first and that I have a clean out if you are an awful kisser.” “I promise, Swan, that we are friends first, and also that I am most certainly not an awful kisser.”
She slaps his arm with her other hand as she squeezes her pinky tighter. They may be approaching thirty years of age, but pinky promises hold the same weight as they did at twelve. She rolls her eyes, “Uh huh, sure. We’ll see about that, KJ.”
It’s practically unfathomable to him that their promise was less than three months ago and yet everything has changed. He always thought he knew Emma better than he knew himself, but her dismissal of him proved to be a massive blindside, no warning in sight.
Worse was the lack of return to their normal friendship and the subsequent breaking of their initial promise, but he probably should’ve expected something like this. Emma is an enigma. Beautiful, and funny, and driven and strong, but also a bloody mystery.
For fourteen perfect days he thought they may finally get their shot at what he'd hoped would be something brilliant. But brilliant was not in the cards for Killian— it hadn’t been most of his life and it seems, when it came to his feelings for Emma, it would be no different.
Now it’s her and Neal and it has been for the better part of a month and a half. The kicker is, it’s all thanks to Killian. Neal couldn’t charm a girl to save his life and wasted no time in resorting to asking Killian for guidance. Little does he know, Killian’s head over heels for the woman he’s trying to swoon.
Details.
He helps craft text messages and gifts as well as aids in the planning for their numerous dates. Killian pulls from the depths of his love for Emma, because all he really wants is for her to be happy. He’d hoped that he’d play a part in that equation one way or another, and while he supposes he does have a role, he never would’ve guessed it would be in this way.
While he remains lost in thought, he somehow finds himself back at his flat. As he ascends the old staircase, he has to catch himself from tripping up the top step. He can’t help but be distracted by the woman sitting against his apartment door.
“Took you long enough, KJ.” She smiles at him and it sparks emotion in him he didn’t realize he was harboring. It seems over a month of watching her fall for his carefully coached understudy has finally gotten under his skin. How can she smile at him as though nothing has changed?
Tempering his anger, he answers her a shrug. She seems to get the message and moves out from in front of his door as he looks down to search for his key.
Bloody hell.
Robin insisted he leave his car keys– with no argument from Killian– but he had forgotten to remove the flat key from his ring. Defeated, Killian leans his head forward until it connects with the cool wood of his front door. For a moment he forgets he’s not alone, the small buzz of alcohol messing with his usual tack sharp retention, but soon Emma is digging in her purse and pulls out the spare key he gave her long before.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, Killian.”
“Calm down, Swan, I’m not proposing you move in. I just want you to have it in case of emergencies.”
She shrugs and he’ll be damned if there wasn’t a slight hint of disappointment in her eyes. “Fair enough. Call me next time you’re too drunk to remember to take your key ring.”
He shakes the memory from his head as Emma unlocks the door. Killian continues inside and she waits, hesitating in the frame of the door. “When did we get like this, Swan?” He winces as the words leave his mouth, but the damage is done. Apparently rum effects more than his short term memory, leaving his carefully placed filter seemingly full of gaping holes.
At first she looks taken aback, but she must reason that she deserves this on some level because she sighs deeply and answers his pointed question, “I broke the pinky promise.”
That was not what Killian was expecting, but he answers all the same, “Aye, I s’pose we both did.”
Emma shakes her head. “KJ– Killian… you and I both know that’s not true.” Killian starts to interject but she continues before he gets the chance, “You’ve put me first since the moment we met, and even more so over the past month. Even after I just… I just feel so stupid to not have seen it before now…”
Emma trails off and Killian wraps his mind around what she’s saying– it doesn’t take long for him to realize that she knows. “How?” He meant for something more profound or curious, but the words escaped him– anything polysyllabic seeming near impossible to comprehend.
Emma rolls her eyes, but he can tell the annoyance is not directed at him. He can always tell when it comes to Emma– that’s why he was so certain they were made for one another. “Neal asked to pinky swear that I’d go on a date with him next week and apparently you didn’t know I reserved those just for you. Not to mention the glare you gave him back at Sherwood’s probably could’ve killed someone. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put two and two together...”
Killian didn’t know pinky swears were reserved for him, but to be honest, he didn’t know anything Emma did was reserved for anyone. Emma Swan is a firecracker set off in the middle of January. She lights her own path and kicks down her own doors. Fierce independence is the first trait that always comes to Killian’s mind, most likely a product of the absolute shit life she led growing up. She never let it phase her. The admiration he holds for this woman is leaps and bounds beyond what he thought capable for any one man, yet she stands here today starting an awkward conversation and standing her ground and he couldn’t be more entranced.
He loves her.
“You broke your promise.” That’s certainly not what he wanted to say, but he supposes just because he’d walk through fire for her, doesn’t mean the pain won’t linger.
“I was scared, KJ.” He scoffs, he doesn’t mean to, not really, but he knows Emma doesn’t get scared. She’s as fearless as they come.
“You don’t get scared, Emma.” She flinches at his use of her real name but recovers quickly.
“Hah,” Emma laughs sarcastically. She seems to think he’s kidding but he can tell the moment she recognizes the sincerity of this moment. She whispers, “You terrify me, Killian.”
His heart breaks a little and with its crack, the flood gates open; the anger that washes away bringing to light all that he’s been denying for the better part of 16 years. He’s scared of her, too. Scared she could do real damage, scared she could break him to the point of no return, but Killian is a risk taker. He always has been, especially if that risk involves Emma Swan. He thought she was a risk taker too, but she chose to play it safe.
Because she feels the exact same way.
It hits him like a tidal wave, and he says the first thing he can think of, “I could never hurt you, Swan.” He hopes she can hear the conviction in his voice, his words ringing truer than any he’s spoken before.
“Most people who fall in love don’t intend to hurt one another, Killian.” He realizes what she’s saying but he can’t help but get hung up on one word:
Love.
She loves him. She may not know it yet, but she does. That’s enough for him to try.
He steps forward, every inch with less hesitation until they’re standing toe to toe. He can smell remnants of the bar on her, but it’s mixed with her comforting scent of cinnamon and vanilla that he’s come to recognize as his favorite. He’s positive he still smells like a barrel of Captain Morgan, but the buzz he feels is no longer from the rum. (Apparently emotional revelations are a quite sobering.)
“I’m all in, Swan.” He pauses. “Please don’t push me away.”
She doesn’t look at him, but he feels her fingers brush the hem of his vest and he can’t stop the shiver that rushes up his spine. It only intensifies when she speaks, “I can’t promise I won’t run again.”
“Aye,” he gently grabs her chin, urging her to look him in the eye, “but I promise, so long as you want me, I’ll be there to chase you and bring you home.”
She smiles brightly and starts to lean in for a kiss before stopping abruptly and raising her pinky to eye level, “Pinky swear?”
Killian can’t help but laugh as he once again connects his pinky to hers, “Pinky swear, Swan.”

Can I Steal You for a Second? CH4
Summary: Adrien is forced to participate in a new dating show, but becomes more excited when Ladybug says she’ll participate as her civilian self.
AKA: AU where Adrien doesn’t know Marinette, the superheroes are 22 and Gabriel is mean and ruthless but not Hawkmoth.
Read on AO3
Chapter 4
Adrien was in bed, nervously staring at his ceiling. Today was the day that 30 women would show up to the mansion. They would meet each other and be put in their Gabriel-brand dresses and then given time to do hair and make-up while at a warehouse downtown. Then, they would be moved and sent to meet him one by one in a limo and would participate in a cocktail party. Finally, he would have to cut the pool of girls down from 30 to 22. No matter which way Adrien looked at it, it was going to be a long day.
But Ladybug will be there. That was the only thought that got him out of bed when the producer assigned to moving Adrien from place to place as the show went along (He considered her to be the TV version of Natalie, but he still hadn’t caught her name, so in his head he called her the Mini-Natalie) had begun calling at his door for him to get up. Today consisted of trying to memorize the names and pictures of the girls, hair and make-up, doing interviews about how he feels pre-meetings, and more hair and make-up before the girls began showing up at exactly nightfall. But, there was a ray of sunshine at the end of this tunnel, and it was covered in polka dots.
Adrien put on some acceptable clothes, brushed his teeth and his hair, and just barely remembered to grab Plagg from his pillow before he was rushed to a studio with a bagel in his mouth. They planned on taking videos of him doing natural things in his life, but they had set it all up in a studio so it would be just right. He felt anything but natural posing and walking around the fake sidewalk and scenery.
After he had finished with those, they moved him to a grey screen-covered area where Adrien was to do various poses with a long-stemmed rose. He felt even more awkward doing these shots than he had doing the “natural posing” earlier. They made him smile really bright and act like he was “in love.” Thankfully, all he had to do was think of Ladybug and finding out her identity and he then had the perfect look for these shots down.
They also made him work out with weights for about an hour while filming the whole thing. This wasn’t too terrible as his Father made him do similar things now that he was out of high school in order for him to keep his body shape. (If only he knew about his runs as Chat Noir, the gym workouts would be unnecessary) Though normally he did all of his workouts with a shirt on. Either that or a skin-tight leather suit. Then, and honestly the most embarrassing of all, they took a large number of shots of Adrien showering. Why, the world needed to see Adrien shirtless with water running through his hair and down his chest he literally had no idea. Thankfully he was allowed to wear swim trunks, so as to not be too exposed. But, his many years of modeling had taught Adrien never to argue with the director and he figured that applied in this situation as well.
Once the B-roll shots were taken, Adrien was whisked away for hair and make-up and another, more formal outfit for the interviews. They asked him too many questions and he just had to keep acting excited about everything that was going on. Some of the questions were just too personal or sounded funny, but Plagg was having a blast silently laughing at what Adrien was saying. Occasionally, Adrien would “stretch” and slap his pocket where Plagg was hiding. He was rewarded with a squeal and some silence for about 5 minutes before Plagg would start up again.
He was coached to be honest about some things, so when they asked about the first Rose Ceremony tonight and if he was nervous, he had no shame in saying absolutely. He cited possibly not being able to get a feel for every girl tonight as well as having to remember their names as the reason for his nervousness. Although those were true, he was mostly worried that his Lady would slip past his notice and be cut before he could figure out it was her. His only saving grace was that tomorrow was Sunday, so it wouldn’t take long for him to discover his mistake.
The questions never seemed to end, and when he asked why there were so many, the director explained that since they had to make a ton of promotional videos to get the word about the show out, as well as fill in stuff for the first episode, they had to have an abundance of material. That, at least, made sense to Adrien. He tried to play up to the camera as much as he could, but by the end he was over it.
It was almost time for dinner and then the start of the show when the director reached the final question, “In your honest opinion, Adrien, do you think this could work? Do you think you’ll be able to find love?”
Without any hesitation, Adrien’s smiled softened as he began to think about Ladybug. His response of, “I truly believe that I will meet my soulmate tonight,” earned him a handful of “awes” and sighs from the production staff. With the knowledge that he had at least given one camera-worthy response, he allowed himself to be dragged away from the set and into, yet another, stylist chair.
----------------------------------------------------
Marinette was feeling just as stressed as Adrien, but for a whole different reason. As soon as she arrived, she had an uneasy feeling. The limo driver had dropped her off at a warehouse building on the outskirts of town. It wasn’t a place she visited often as Ladybug, and so she was very unfamiliar with the area. Once inside, she was immediately ushered to a conference room where the girls were going to meet the people in charge of them and receive the concrete schedule for that day. When she asked about her luggage, a lady told her that it was going to be held by the workers in case she got cut tonight and needed to head straight home.
“But don’t worry sweetheart, nothing’s going to happen to your things, but if you make it through tonight, you’ll be moved into the mansion quickly.” The lady gave Marinette a once over and then said, “And when you get sent home, we’ll take care of everything for you.” For some reason, Marinette wasn’t put at ease.
The conference room felt crowded with all thirty of the girls as well as a handful of producers. Marinette sat, looked around the room, and was whispering to Tikki underneath her breath. “I hope some of the girls who I met while we were getting interviewed and photographed made it. It’d be nice to see a familiar face. Or I should say, a familiar friendly face.” The annoying girl who made all of the other girls flock to her from the interview weekend, Lila, had been cast and Marinette was less than thrilled.
“I could scope out the room for you, Marinette!”
“No, I don’t want you to get lost in all of the chaos. I may let you do some exploring later. Thank you for offering, though.” Marinette gave Tikki a smile and reached her hand in to brush her finger against Tikki’s cheek. Tikki hugged her back and settled down in the purse. It took Tikki a couple of weeks, but eventually, she came around to the idea of Marinette participating. She even helped her stay calm when she was freaking out about packing and Alya hadn’t been called yet. Marinette was very grateful that she had Tikki throughout this process. She couldn’t imagine only having the other contestants to talk to all of the time and occasionally Adrien. Tikki’s going to help keep her sane.
An older man walked up to the front of the room and a hush quickly fell over the girls. There were a couple of other people around him, but he clearly was the one in charge, since everyone was looking at him, waiting for him to speak.
“Hello ladies. My name is Mike Fleiss, and I am the producer for the American version of The Bachelor. I’ve been asked to oversee this season to help push the show to be as successful as its counterpart over the seas.” He spoke French pretty well for an American, even if he did have an accent of sorts.
“I’m excited to see what this amazing and beautiful group of girls brings and I know that you all will jump start the Bachelor franchise very well. With that being said, we do have some “house rules” as you would call it, so let’s begin by going over those. Please pay attention, as you will be signing a piece of paper stating that you have gone over these rules with me.
The most important rule for you to remember is that you are not allowed to leave the mansion no matter what, unless you are on a date and are accompanied by Adrien or a producer. As long as you are in the show, you are our responsibility and we will not allow you to put yourself in harms way.”
One rule in and Marinette already knew she had to break it. She couldn’t not leave if an akuma attacked. And she had had promised Adrien that she would meet up with him every Sunday as Ladybug, and there was no way she was backing out of that. Thankfully, she could be sneaky and work around that one rule.
“There is also no use of phones or any other sort of technology that connects you to the outside world. There is no internet at this mansion and you are not allowed to have books of any kind except for the Bible unless preapproved by us.” Her sketch book was preapproved so she was good on that. “Please also note that music players are allowed but music can only be heard through earbuds for copyright reasons.
“Once inside the mansion, you are expected to do your own cooking, cleaning, and laundry. The mansion is already stocked with certain necessities, but if you ever need anything to cook with or you run out of something, let a producer know and we can make a trip to the store for you.” Considering Marinette did most of that for herself already, she wasn’t too worried. And maybe she could make friends by cooking some stuff for others too, so that could be fun.
“Also, today and the day we shoot the last episode are the only days that the studio will do your hair and make-up. Every other day, you will be required to do it. Also, if you remember, when you were interviewed you were also measured and sized. That is because every outfit that you wear during the filming of this show is going to be a Gabriel piece. Gabriel Agreste has been very kind in allowing the show to do that and his people have picked out various outfits for you to choose from for tonight. Please note that if an outfit of yours goes missing when you are cut from the show, you will be fined and a police report will be filed.”
There were murmurs at that comment. The girl sitting closest to Marinette leaned over and whispered, “Wow that’s a lot for a missing dress,” Although Marinette understood why Gabriel was doing this, it still didn’t make it fun. What designer can make money if they give their clothes away, even if his outfits are ridiculously expensive.
“Now,” Mr. Fleiss’ voice brought all of the girls to silence again and he continued once he had all of their attention. “as you probably guessed, there are going to be cameras everywhere. If someone asks you for an interview, you do not decline. Everywhere you go, a camera goes. The only place they will not follow you into is the bathroom, but they will stand outside of the door and record sounds so be aware of that.” Mr. Fleiss paused as he seemed to make sure that everything had been covered.
“That should be everything. If you have any questions, whether about the rules or the journey, please feel free to ask.” That moment was the first time that Marinette had seen him smile and with that smile, he gestured to the people stationed to the side of the rows of girls. “We have reached the fun part. If you would do the honors gentlemen,” the men started passing out bags to the girls closest to them and working their way around the room. “All of you are receiving a gift bag provided by our generous sponsors. Inside, you will find various hair products, different types of make-up, as well as some sunscreen and a lovely padded bikini gifted by Gabriel for you to use during the filming. And yes, before you ask, you can take the bikinis home with you.”
Excited chatter broke across the room as the girls got their bags and began pulling stuff out and looking through it. Marinette looked in hers and noticed a tube of waterproof mascara, a container of highlighter, a bottle of hair shining spray, a self-tanning lotion, the tube of sunscreen and her bikini, which was a bright red color. Red was a good color for her, for obvious reasons, and the padded bra part was nice as Marinette’s chest could use a little bit of help in that area.
“That’s really nice of them!” Tikki whispered from Marinette’s purse.
“I’m surprised they found so many sponsors for the show since it is so new here. This is some good, quality stuff here too. And now I can say I own a Gabriel original!” Marinette let out a tiny squeal.
“I wouldn’t be too excited about that,” Tikki said with a laugh. “There’s not that much material here to make it too much of an original!”
“Oh hush!” Marinette scolded, though her giggles made it seem less threatening than it was intended to be.
Mr. Fleiss clapped and called the girls to attention. “Yes, yes, very exciting, but we have one more thing to discuss. The schedule for today. In about 20 minutes, you will be dismissed in groups of 5 to go and be worked on by our stylists. Once your hair and make-up is completed, you will be guided to your assigned dressing area, where your pre-picked dresses are waiting for you to choose from. A word of advice from someone who has worked on many seasons of this show: pick this dress wisely. If it’s too gaudy, Adrien won’t be interested. If it’s too plain, he won’t remember you.
“And speaking of remembering, tonight you will have a chance to make a first impression. When you first get out of the limo, your look is what matters. When you walk up to Adrien though, you will be expected to have a minute conversation with him. Do something or say something to make him remember you. All of these need to be approved by Victoria,” He pointed to a lady with a clipboard who was standing by the door in the back. All of the girls were so still and quiet, you could have heard a pen drop.
“He is not going to remember your name and want to keep you around if you don’t do something to catch his attention. You will have another chance to catch his attention during the cocktail party, so you can plan something a little more elaborate for then. During the cocktail party, however, it is your responsibility to find time with Adrien. Please keep everything you do appropriate and if you need anything not available in this building, let one of us know and we’ll make it happen for tonight.”
“The first group will be called in 15 minutes,” Victoria called out before walking out the door.
It took about a minute before the girls began chatting with everyone around them. They were all brainstorming on different ways they could make a good first impression. A girl a couple rows in front of her was explaining that she thought she could do a couple of backflips once out of the limo, she would just need to practice doing them in heels. Marinette thought that was a super cool idea and moved onto the next conversation. Everyone seemed to have an idea, no matter how out there it seemed.
“Tikki, what do you think—”
Before she could finish her sentence, the girl sitting directly next to Marinette, who was taller than Marinette by about 5 inches, had long blonde hair and a sweet smile, turned to her and caught her arm, preventing Marinette from conversing with Tikki.
“Hi! It’s so nice to meet you! My name is Hanna and I’m from Camembert, France, you know like the cheese? My family are farmers and I am so excited to be here in the city. What’s your name? Where are you from? What do you think you’re going to do once you’re out of the limo?” She seemed to speak without taking a breath and Marinette mentally thanked Alya for her ability to understand what she had said.
“Umm, hi! My name is Marinette, I’m from Paris and I don’t know just yet.” She tried not to sound too distraught about not knowing what to do, but her nervous jitters were getting the best of her.
Hanna began to ramble about all of the amazing things she’s seen of Paris and how excited she was to meet Adrien and nervous of making a good impression, and on and on. Marinette smiled at her speaking with such excitement about being able to drive past a real shopping mall.
This girl, Hanna, seemed so innocent and cheerful and friendly and Marinette wondered how in the world she was going to fair in the competition. Especially with girls like Lila to manipulate her. In that moment, Marinette decided to befriend her and hopefully keep her out of harm’s way. Marinette stole a glance at Tikki, who gave her an approving nod and a smile.
Hanna was currently stressing about what she was going to do tonight when Marinette interrupted her. “Hey, I’m sure everything is going to be okay! Let’s brainstorm ideas together. What do you enjoy doing? Anything we can use to make you pop?”
Hanna talked for about 5 more minutes about all of the different things she could do, each idea worse than the last. Eventually, Marinette picked out that Hanna enjoyed singing karaoke with her family after dinner. When Marinette gently suggested that she bring a karaoke machine and sing a little to Adrien right out of the limo, Hanna jumped on the idea. She gathered Marinette in a bone-crushing hug and thanked her profusely. After letting go, she brought the idea up to Victoria, and was quickly scanning through a provided list of songs and deciding how romantic the song she sang needed to be when the first group was called.
“Attention ladies. I need Alice, Celeste, Jeanne, Juliette, and Hanna for hair and make-up.”
Hanna squealed and dropped her list on the ground out of excitement. Marinette quickly picked it up and passed it to her, accepting another hug from Hanna and promising to find her later today before the filming started.
After she was off and Marinette was alone, she began brainstorming for herself. She had plenty of ideas of what she could do, each more insane than the last. At first, she thought of doing yo-yo tricks, or showing up in a red and black dress, or starting with some insane Ladybug-style tricks, but Tikki decided it was too obvious and that it wouldn’t be fair for the other girls if Adrien found out tonight, right off the bat. Thankfully Tikki had vetoed the idea, because she heard of another contestant who was doing that same thing. Apparently, it had gotten out that Adrien was a fan of Ladybug, so everyone from France (there were a couple of Swedish girls, one from Belgium, and of course, the Italian model, Lila) jumped at the opportunity to impress him using the super-heroine as a starting point.
Soon, she was out of ideas and Marinette needed an idea that would make her stand out. She was trying not to be bitter about coming up with no ideas. She had an advantage over the others, and yet she couldn’t think of anything that would be good enough for her to do. What did she know that her Kitty loved that could blow him out of the water without fully giving away her identity?
She was feeling helpless and stupid and annoyed when she overheard a conversation from some other contestants, one of whom was also having trouble coming up with something creative.
“Just use your personality! If everyone else is doing something crazy as soon as they see him, be the one normal girl he talks to.”
Marinette jerked her head up. Personality. She knew all about Adrien’s personality, or really, the personality he displayed as Chat. He claimed that Chat was his true personality, not the stuffy one his father made him have in his presence. Suddenly, she was so overcome with an idea, she was surprised it took her so long to think of it. It was brilliant and memorable and exactly something that her Kitty would love to hear tonight. A deep smile spread across her face as she ran to line up in front of Victoria, who was getting ready to call the next group. She wasn’t exactly going to be her normal, Ladybug self, but she was going to knock Adrien off of his feet.
----------------------------------------------------
Forty-five minutes later and Marinette’s group, the last one, was being called. She was rushed to a stylist chair where people began to swarm around her, grabbing her hair or moving her face in different directions. By the time they stepped away, Marinette almost didn’t recognize herself in the mirror. Her hair was loose and styled with soft curls with an intricate braid that hid her bangs. Her make-up was well-done and highlighted all of the important features.
She was then moved to a changing room that she shared with the other girls in her style group. Once she found the dress rack with her name on it, she began flipping through, looking for the perfect color and style dress. She finally found one that wouldn’t bring attention to her small chest but would make her curves stand out. And it was the exact color of her eyes, which would make them pop.
Soon she was sitting at a table with all of the other girls, who looked just as beautiful as she did, and chattering with Hanna about tonight. Once all of Marinette’s group sat down, they were called to attention and given the piece of paper for them to sign stating that they had heard and agree to follow the rules of the House. They also had to put when they were expecting their next period, which startled Marinette. Thankfully, she wasn’t the only one, but she did as she was asked.
They were then given the opportunity to eat and after about 30 minutes, Victoria was calling the girls and putting them in the order that they would appear before Adrien. They would ride to the mansion in groups, then wait their turns as the limo brought each girl individually to see Adrien. The girls who had non-limo entrances (one girl was riding in on a horse) would be instructed when it would be their turn to walk (or ride) in. Otherwise, the limo drivers were in charge of the timing.
Marinette, who was stationed towards the middle, right behind Hanna and in front of a girl named Lucie, was excited and yet nervous. Tikki had to hide in her bra since no bags were allowed in the mansion the first day. Although it was kind of awkward for both of them, Marinette was happy to have Tikki so close, as it would be easier to talk to her as the night went along. And she had a feeling they would have lots to talk about.
Soon the first set of girls were being put in their limo and driven to the mansion. In about an hour, Marinette would be face-to-face with the man of her dreams.
----------------------------------------------------
Adrien suddenly couldn’t breath and his hands were all sweaty as his limo was driven to the mansion where the girls he was going to date would be living. Mini-Natalie was in the car with him and was instructing him what would happen as they drove up.
“You will get out of the car and will be recorded. So please be aware of what you say and how you react. Chris will meet you and will chat with you about tonight, and then the first girl will appear. Chris will tell you when. Follow his lead, he knows what he is doing.”
Chris Harrison was the host for the American version and Adrien had met him a couple of times. He seemed like a nice guy, but it was weird that all this man did for a living was watch people date each other and make occasional comments. They had Alec, the normal reality show host for most of Paris’s entertainment, shadowing him, but they wanted the first season to have an experienced host so it was more of a smooth time filming. Adrien was just grateful to have someone who understood the show well enough to help guide him through this rollercoaster.
The limo pulled to a stop and Mini-Natalie, shooed him out. He stepped out and was greeted by really bright lights in front of this gorgeous mansion. It had to be at least 3 floors and had a jaw-dropping look to it. No wonder they picked this to be the location for the show.
“Evening Adrien,” Chris greeted him at the place where the concrete turned from driveway to sidewalk. Adrien could see a camera filming him as he walked to shake Chris’ hand. “How are you feeling?”
“I’m a little excited and nervous,” Adrien responded.
“That’s completely normal. Tonight’s going to be a lot. You’re going to meet a lot of girls. Do you believe you’ll be able to find the one through this journey?”
“Honestly Chris I do. I’m excited to see what tonight brings and hopefully I can make a good first impression.”
Chris laughed at that, “I believe that’s what the girls will be hoping too.” He stuck his hand out for another handshake and Adrien took it as Chris said, “Good luck tonight, the first limo is coming around the corner.”
“Thank you.” Adrien looked toward the end of the driveway and did indeed see a limo poking out.
The cameras were switched off and Mini-Natalie, who had exited the limo after the cameras had followed Adrien, began positioning him on the sidewalk. Once he was set and Mini-Natalie walked away to make sure he looked good in the cameras, Adrien took a moment to be excited. He was going to meet his lady tonight, even if he didn’t know which one she was going to be.
Once it had been decided that Adrien looked good, they motioned the first limo to approach the house. Plagg, who had been asleep in Adrien’s pocket, woke up from his nap, claiming that he didn’t want to miss anything that the girls did or said tonight. Adrien rolled his eyes at that.
“Well if you’re going to be awake then know, no comments, no matter what the girls say or do, you don’t get to say a word. We’ll have time for your commentary later,” At that, Plagg opened his mouth to protest, but was cut-off when the first limo came to a stop in front of the house and the door clicked open.

↠ * mnet global auditions season 4 , ♥«´¨`•°.. » episode four ! that new new » ¸.•* DEJA VU by NU’EST W ! ( LINE DISTRIBUTION & STYLE ) `*•.
the ending of episode three happens much faster than she ever anticipated, people getting eliminated more quickly than she could process. it takes a while for her to full comprehend their ranking as a team, and even longer to realize that not all of them are moving on.
once she does, she’s heartbroken. she doesn’t believe wonshik deserves to go home at all with how well-rounded he is, and nearly finds herself trying to speak up, but the words just get caught up in her mouth. disbelief is soon taken over by the guilt---she’d been the one to recommend the song, she’d been the leader of the team. surely, she could have found a way to prevent this; if only she’d worked harder, then maybe none of them would have had to go home, maybe they’d have been at the top. it’s hard to stop the tears that threaten to fall, but she manages, barely, only to break down as soon as they’re all swept off stage.
but she isn’t given any time to deal with the guilt, deal with the regret. the mga’s are fast-paced, and she’s learned just how fast in the past week and, as cruel as it is, she has no choice but to push those thoughts to the back of her mind. she has to move on. she has a new team now, a new challenge to face.
it’s a little bittersweet, meeting new people when she’d grown attached to the group she’d been in last week. she wishes to redeem herself as the team leader, but the rules don’t allow it, and she isn’t sure whether she’s disappointed that she can’t, or relieved that she doesn’t have to worry about whether or not she’ll be ale to actually do it. at the very least, she’s happy that minho is still in the same group with her, allowing for some sort of anchor in this fast-paced, ever-changing journey.
still, despite her initial apprehensions about it, she once again finds herself becoming comfortable with this new group, especially after they all decide to do a band concept for part of their performance, an idea first brought forth by daniel, and one she thinks is so brilliant she’s just as enthusiastic about it as he is. perhaps that had been their downfall last time; they’d stuck too close to a classic, hadn’t taken enough risks. and this is a big one that she hopes will pay off.
throughout the week, she learns about each and every person, once again picking up on their traits and skills, their different personalities that didn’t clash, but rather worked together in productive discussions and constructive criticisms because they all had one goal: to put out their best. it shows in the way they help each other, in the way every person makes sure that everyone else is doing well, that everyone else is getting the help they need.
it shows in the way yongsun takes the reigns of as the leader extremely well, making sure every single detail is taken care of, reigning them in if they ever got off topic, checking in on everyone if she senses them struggling. she witnesses it first hand when yongsun approaches her to practice their lines together, in her soft yet strict approach at helping the others. "you remind me of my vocal coach back home in sydney,” she tells her as they take a break from rehearsing. “i always viewed her as an older sister. you’ve got that same warm kind of feeling.”
it shows in rose’s determination to familiarize herself with the electric guitar and playing in a band, both foreign concepts to her. her willingness to learn makes it easy for seola to teach her and guide her, and, despite her initial insecurities, rose shows a great deal of courage to be willing to play in a band for the first time at the mgas, whose audience was much larger than anything seola had ever played for, and she admires her for it. even when they’re working on the choreography for the transition from instruments to choreography, seola learns of just how talented her fellow teammate is.
it shows in the way daniel so openly admits his own weakness in dancing so that he can get help with it. as someone who has always had a problem with admitting her own faults, she respects his candor when it’s her turn to help him through the choreography, carefully explaining each step, making sure that he’s not only got the choreography donw, but also that he’s aware of his spacing when in formation, aware of how his lines look as he performs. "you know,” she tells him as she helps adjust the position of his arms and waist during a particular move, watching their reflection in the mirror. “you say you’re bad at this, but with some practice, i bet you’d be pretty decent.”
and it shows in the way minho holds her up when she reaches her lowest point mid-week and she goes to him with all her thoughts, dumping each and every insecurity and sense of guilt on him, so much so that she feels bad afterward for having done so. but he shows great maturity and empathy when he tells her he understands what she’s going through, but that she shouldn't be too hard on herself, that all they can do for now is do their best. “i need you to be amazing again, so i can be too,” he tells her, and she feels the tears welling up in her eyes again. when did she become such a crybaby? “otherwise i’d be too worried and tripping on my own feet and we can’t have that okay?” he then wraps her in an embrace and she feels as if a dark cloud is being lifted. she hugs him back, chucking at his words even as she continues to cry and let it all out. “see, you would have been a great leader. i knew i voted for you for a reason,” she jokes quietly, referring to when they’d all voted on who would be the leader for the week. and as much as she’d like to sit around to recover, he’s absolutely right; it’s time to get back to work.
the work load is large, with having to not only learn new choreography, learn a new song, but also having to arrange a band version of the first minute and a half, all within a week. but with the group working like a well-oiled machine, things seem to be running as smoothly as she could have dreamed. the choreography is cleaned up, the band is playing like a cohesive unit, their name is picked, and their stage outfits chosen.
before she knows it, the day of filming arrives and her nerves are once again on high alert. she doesn’t think they can get any worse, but a cog in the machine comes lose and the gears come to a grinding halt once they run through rehearsals and daniel makes a mistake with the choreography. tensions are unbelievably high as they leave the stage afterward, so much so that she feels she can’t breathe. she can only imagine how daniel must feel after making such an error on stage, and she doesn’t want him to feel that way, so she approaches him from behind, walking in step beside him as she wraps an arm around his, hoping it’s comforting, even if just a tiny bit.
“hey, you okay?” she asks him, concern clearly written in her tone. she glances at him, soft smile on her features. “it’s okay, you know. we all make mistakes.” she bites on her lower lips, trying to find the right words to say, deciding to take it to a lighter tone. “i know it doesn’t seem like it, but even i make mistakes. shocking, right?” she laughs quietly to herself, lips pursed into a close-lipped smile. “mistakes don’t matter. what matters is how you recover from them and learn. we’ll go through it again, yeah?”
in the end they all run through their performance again, making sure they’re back on track just before filming.
last week, her team had been the fifth to perform, and it had put her extremely on edge while watching everyone else’s performances. now, with them going dead last, she isn’t sure she’ll make it to the end. her fingers are tingling and her mind and heart are going a million miles a minute. she finds that watching the performances of the other teams helps, but it also puts more doubt in her mind. everyone on the show is so talented---where does she stand?
by some act of god, she makes it to the end, and their team name is called. she trails behind most everyone, standing just in front of yongsun as they make their way to the stage. “hello, we are girl crush!” they introduce themselves, bowing at the audience and at the judges, each of them dressed to the nines and looking sharp as all hell in their suits.
afterward, they make their way to their starting positions, instruments at the ready, and she takes one last deep breath.
remember to have fun, she tells herself. you got this.
she starts off the song on her electric guitar, fingers gliding across the strings like she’s been playing it her entire life, and she has. she owes all of her guitar knowledge to her father, and this is in part an ode to him, to show him that all the time he’s spent with her is paying off, that she’s doing what she loves and is using what she’s learned from him well. she leans in toward the mic as her voice and rose’s joins in with the melody. daniel and yongsun then take over before the song fully takes off, the rest of the instruments joining in to make the song have a fuller sound.
난 널 그리워하고 i’m missing you 너는 날 기다리게 해 and you make me wait for you
she looks directly into the camera as she sings her first line, voice soft but clear as she tries to emote the feeling of having loved and lost, drawing from her most recent experience at her mother leaving her family behind. it’s painful to admit that, even after all the wrong she’s done, seola still misses her, even if it’s just a line in a song.
after her short adlib, she no longer has any lines until just before they switch to choreography, so she focuses instead on her fingering, making sure she’s in time with the rhythm minho keeps on the drums, still aware of her facial expressions, painting a melancholy expression on her features with her lips turned down at the corners in the most minute of manners, her brows ever so slightly furrowed.
say woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo woo
she sings her lines with longing, eyes closed as she brings her lips closer to the microphone, still strumming along to their arrangement. the most difficult part of their performance, in her opinion, is coming up soon, and soon as rose finishes her line and the lights dim, she quickly removes the guitar from around her shoulders and carefully places it down on its stand. she then rushes to join her fellow teammates in formation, making it just in time before the lights come back on, with minho at the front of their straight line. it had run flawlessly, despite the small hiccup they had during rehearsals.
from behind, they do the arm choreography while minho raps, and then break off toward the sides into full choreography. as much fun as she’d had doing the band section, seola enjoys this the most. she considers dancing to be just another extension to her singing, another way to express the emotions and nuances of a song when her voice isn’t in use. her movements are sharp as a knife where they need to be, smooth as running water at other times. she’s a trained dancer through and through, and it shows in her precision and musicality. compared to last week, this type of choreography is more her style.
밝은 곳을 걸으며 빛을 남겨줘 let me walk to the bright place, leave the light on
when she sings again, there’s hardly a sign at all that she’d been exerting herself, her voice still loud and clear, barely a waver to be found. she falls to one knee at the end of her line, continuing on with the choreography. allowing the rhythm to dictate the flow of her movements, in time with the pace of the song as well as her other teammates.
the mirroring part of the choreography comes up and she positions herself in front of their formation, turning around to face minho, making sure their movements are perfectly in sync as they look at one another.
네가 보여 i can see you
she whips her body around again at the end of her line, and they once again disperse across the stage into a new formation after minho raps his line. she repeats her wooing line again, walking across stage with purpose as she once again finds the camera, looking straight into it. she then launches into the following line, yongsun joining in as they sing the section they’d first gone over together during practice.
잠시라도 사라지면 안 돼 deja vu deja vu don’t disappear even for a moment, deja vu deja vu
with all her lines sung, she puts all her effort into the last few counts of choreography, face still just as expressive as it had been when she’d started the song. their performance comes to an end to the sound of yongsun and daniel’s voices, and they all form into a circle, each of their backs turned toward the middle as they sit on the floor.
they’re quietly shooed off stage, and she’s one of the last to leave, wanting to savor the moment for just a bit longer, of their hard work paying off. even if she’s in the bottom again this week, at least she can say she’s proud, not only of herself, but of the rest of her group.
“congratulations on a great performance guys,” she says once they’re back stage and their mics have been removed. she’s all smiles and giddy as she grabs onto the shoulders of minho with her two hands on either side of his head, using his height as leverage to get more air as she jumps up and down. “you all did amazing.”
and she means it. she just hopes the judges think the same.

Side saddle on the motto.. think that's safe? Lol, Tonight's dinner (lucky me I got the fish head), 350 cfa coffee, and menu at Bruno's if you can read it Nothing too interesting has been going on. Yesterday at school I got another shot for rabies! Today I did a group presentation on an English lesson. Incase you forgot, I'm actually here to be teaching English. And possibly math and and youth entrepreneurship once I learn good enough French to teach in only French. This is actually much harder than I though. I have to actually learn how to teach! That means being interesting, keeping the attention of a large class, and learning all other kinds of teacher stuff. Also, I didn't realize how little I know about English grammar. Do you know what a gerund, intransitive verb, or present continuous verb is? Yeah... me either. That's some of the stuff we're going to be learning about. Also, in school we learn about sexual assault, how to not be a bystander, recognizing unsafe situations, Cameroonian relationships and norms, and learning about all kids of std's and stuff. I got an new language teacher and really like her! Today we went to a restaurant called Bruno's! We were supposed to speak in French while there. I got coffee. I hardly have caffeine anymore so I came home and had energy to clean my entire room! The restaurant is like a shed with curtains covering the doorways and long benches for seating. I think it's the first one I've been in since I've been here and I'll definitely go back. They had things like spaghetti omelettes, rice, and avocado and spaghetti. (Pictures above of the inside) Something interesting here is the electricity. It seems to go out about every day but is only out for less than a hour typical and then flips back on. We light lanterns and it's usually fine. It's funny because when it does come back on all the kids in the compound start cheering. Also, in the market, it's pretty interesting to me how many products are in English; however, people like mamma can't speak any English. Also, you wouldn't believe how much Nike, Coach, Adidas, Michael Kors, Gucci, Pablo, and other designer brand knock offs are here! I'm pretty sure maman has a Coach purse. And the most exciting thing... I think I'm going tomorrow to pick out some fabric for mamma to sew me some traditional clothes. I showed her a pair of pants and a dress I like! I think for both it is 8,000 cfa (I'll update on the actual price when I pay). Very cheap for custom made clothes I think! Hopefully she can finish it before she has the baby. I think it's due in like a week. Next Wednesday is also the day I go to volunteer to see another current volunteer at their post for 4 days to see how they do things. I'm excited to get out and do something new.

Road to Ruin [Chapter 2-Reader]
Pairing: Jackson Wang x Reader Rating: Somewhere between R and NC-17 I believe. Synopsis: The reader is setting up for a long weekend alone at the training facility when Jackson asks a weird request of her. Author’s Note: I literally wrote five different versions of this chapter, all VASTLY different from each other. I chose this one because it was way easier to write and the vibe was right. Hope you enjoy.
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 |
Tumblr media
Your name: submit What is this? // <![CDATA[ function replaceAll(find, replace, str) { return str.replace(new RegExp(find, 'g'), replace); } function myHandler() { var input = document.getElementById("inputTxt").value; document.body.innerHTML = replaceAll('Y/N', document.getElementById("inputTxt").value, document.body.innerHTML); } // ]]>
The sun setting beneath the horizon marked the official start to the long weekend. This meant most of the dorms and the campus itself were emptying out, most people prepping for the massive party Jinyoung was throwing or heading home to see family and friends.
But for me, this meant silence. My roommate, who typically took several hours to prepare for whatever party was held that weekend, was surprisingly already gone. She usually was just ready to leave for the party when I was settling in for sleep.
With all the freedom that came with solitude and free time, I was wondering how to spend it. I had a few tapes from previous bouts that I could review for practice Tuesday evening, but I had four days to do that. I could go for a run and enjoy some fresh air, but I already did my cardio for the day. There was no use in overdoing it.
Instead of doing anything remotely productive, I decided checking Instagram was the better idea. Scrolling through the feed, I passed pictures of my sister in Tokyo, a few of my friends from my old high school having a big night out and a few photos from other athletes gearing up for Jinyoung's party. Perhaps these pictures were what a normal 22-year-old's weekend looked like. It involved friends and alcohol and trendy clothes. But for me, I was content in my sweatpants and my bed.
Just as I was becoming too disinterested my Instagram feed, something caught my attention. Well, not just something, a bare chest caught my attention.
It was pale and toned. Broad shoulders led to lean, slightly small but defined biceps. The pectorals that gripped my attention next were intoxicating in ways that I didn't know it could be. My teeth sunk deep into my bottom lip as I continued staring wordlessly at the picture of a very shirtless Mark. I swear I nearly passed out when I realized who it was, especially when I realized that beneath his oversized shirts lay a chiseled set of abs and sharp v-lines.
How the hell did Mark end up on my feed?
"For fuck's sake," I mumbled, looking at Jinyoung's icon just above the photo.
The picture was enough to distract me from mentally going on a tirade of how unironic and unappreciative I was of Jinyoung at this particular moment in life. My mind began to imagine what it felt like to stand in his arms. Did his toned chest feel hard to the touch or soft in a way? Would goosebumps appear over the skin if I ran a finger along his sternum or would he largely be unaffected by anything I did?
My phone vibrated violently in my hand, making me jump out of my skin. Eyebrows knitted together, I stared at the new text message banner at the top of the screen. Hitting it with my thumb, I watched as the thread of messages appeared from Youngjae.
Are you still around campus?
Yup :), I texted back.
I am so hungry my stomach is cannibalizing itself. Can we eat?
Laughing, I nodded my head before texting a quick yes. Promising to meet him in ten minutes, he quickly texted back a response.
If I'm still alive in ten minutes...
Youngjae was a new friend. Accidental, but still a good friend. Beach volleyball is one of those sports I didn't know was an Olympic sport until I met an actual beach volleyball player. Youngjae and I were in the infirmary for different reasons. I needed to be cleared after spraining my ankle a few weeks before and Youngjae wandered in there after saying he was lost.
Apparently it was his first day at the training facility and he had no idea where he was going. Instead of sitting around and waiting for the trainer and doctor to see me, I walked him to the dorms.
How we actually became friends? That was still a mystery to me.
By the time I made it to the commissary, he was already seated at a small table, eating. Smiling to myself, I rushed toward the station that served soup, asking for as many servings as they would allow.
Taking a seat at the table with my soup and assorted roasted vegetables, I grinned back at Youngjae.
"Seems you couldn't even wait a couple minutes."
Youngjae looked up from his tray with a guilty smile, "I told you my stomach was eating itself."
A light laugh settled between us as I shook my head. "I just thought you were being overdramatic."
"Excuse me, I'm never overdramatic."
"Was the extra emphasis on the word never supposed to back up that argument or...?"
Playfully pouting, my brunette friend grumbled. "I'm hungry, stop trying to out think me right now."
We spent a total of fifteen minutes eating in a comfortable silence. We seemed to be the only two people in the commissary besides the cooks who were beginning to clean the grills and shut down for the evening. When Youngjae reached his dessert of strawberry yogurt, he finally decided to speak.
"Seems everybody is going to Jinyoung's party."
I hummed in response, not finding it to be a big deal.
"Have you ever been to one?"
Looking up, I thought about it. "No."
"And that doesn't bother you?"
"No."
"Why?"
I shrugged, "What's the big deal? It's just Jinyoung and it's just a party."
"Noona, it's Jinyoung's party."
"Trust me, you're not missing out on much. You're probably better off spending Friday night on campus anyway."
I watched as Youngjae pursed his lips, scrunching his nose as he mulled over the statement. "You're probably right, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to go one of these times."
"I'm sure he'll have plenty more."
I couldn't be sure how much time was spent between the two of us, complaining about our training partners and coaches, but it didn't seem like very long. And maybe that's why I liked hanging out with Youngjae. While I wouldn’t consider him my best friend (he's definitely close to it), it was easy hanging out with him. He didn't come with girl drama like Jackson did and he wasn't fussy about how we hung out. He hardly pointed out how non-existent my love life was and I found it easy to discuss things outside of the training facility with him.
"Are you free next Tuesday?" Youngjae asked out of the blue.
Thinking over my schedule, I gave a light shrug, "Maybe? Depends on the time."
"Are you free after lunch on Tuesday?"
"No. Why? Do you need someone?"
"Well, I need a suit for my sister's wedding coming up and I need a second opinion."
I snorted, shaking my head. "You really want fashion advice from me?"
His boisterous laugh filled the empty commissary and I couldn't help but give Youngjae a genuine smile. His laugh was too infectious and happy for me to do any differently.
"No, no, no, not fashion advice," he clarified. "It wouldn't be anything like that. I just want you to tell me if it looks good or not."
Nodding, I popped my last piece of carrot into my mouth. As I chewed, I thought about the possibility of pushing my weight training until after fencing practice so that I could help Youngjae out.
"Why not ask Jackson?"
Youngjae's face completely changed. I'm not saying he paled, because that would be hard to tell in this lighting, but he definitely wore an expression close to it. Eyes wide, lips puckered in surprise he looked somewhat frightened of the idea.
"No," he shook his head.
I was confused at this.
"Why not? He's kind of stylish for a rugged guy," I pointed out. "I'm sure he'd be able to give a better-formed opinion on a man's suit."
"I can't ask Jackson."
"Why not?"
"He scares me," he blurted, an honest look on his face as he looked back at his empty tray.
I laughed, "Jackson isn't..."
Trailing off, I had to consider that while I knew Jackson for three years, I never once considered him scary. A huge presence? Yes. Loud and somewhat uncomfortably nosey? Of course. A flirt with any and everyone? Absolutely. But he wasn't scary to me. In fact, for the first three months I knew him I regarded him more as a cankerous sore on the inside of my cheek.
But once you learn to deal with his loud, vivacious personality, the stigma or the mystique melted away. Jackson was just a good guy who wanted to be loved and well-liked underneath it all. Simple as that. It was just hard to remember that most people didn't see that when they saw Jackson.
"I'll see what I can do to clear my schedule on Tuesday just after lunch, happy?"
Beaming back at me, the largest smile of the night illuminating his face, Youngjae nodded and clapped his hands.
"It's settled then!"
By the time I reached my dorm room, the entire campus was dead. The athletes who were attending Jinyoung's party already gone along the rest who were leaving to visit family over the long weekend. Being on a nearly empty campus probably should've freaked me out a little more, but I loved it.
As I changed into my pajamas, there was only one pesky thought that kept filtering in and out of my consciousness. Jinyoung’s Instagram post from earlier with the very shirtless Mark. Did he know how low those shorts were riding on his narrow hips when the picture was taken? Was he aware that the lighting perfectly hit every dip and curve of his muscles?
Of course not, I scolded as I flopped onto my bed, staring directly up at the ceiling.
Crushes were such a poorly-explored subject for me. After dedicating so much time and effort into fencing, I gave up most of my "normal" teenage years. While girls in middle school were talking about boys and makeup, I was watching Swiss Fencer Marcel Fischer win gold at the Olympics in Athens. Instead of having fun, going on dates or getting caught up in the drama of teen life, I was practicing intensely outside of all my schoolwork.
If only I could've directed some of this determination into academics.
Somehow, without my brain being consulted, my fingers unlocked my phone and pulled up Instagram again. Once my eyes landed on the picture of shirtless Mark again, I felt my whole chest constrict. My skin seared uncomfortably and a tension grew somewhere in the pit of my stomach. I was growing uncomfortable and soon, I was sweaty.
Why did it feel like I was dying of heat stroke?
Tossing my phone onto the night stand, I ignored the sound it made as it clattered onto the wooden surface. My mind was too preoccupied. Fabricated images of shirtless Mark began to invade, making me close my eyes. In my imagination he knew me, acknowledged my existence. And his lean arms were locked around me, no sign of slackening his grip.
That's where my mind began to wander into deeply unknown territory. His luscious lips firmly pressed into my neck as I stood there, like the inexperienced awkward fish I was. In my imagination, Mark's arms slackened just enough to allow his hands to explore. Fingertips lightly brushed over the thin material of my sleep shirt before tracing along my spine.
Real me sighed. Closing my eyes, I tried to get a grip on the situation. There was no use in getting myself all worked up when I wasn't even remotely close to doing anything about it. It's not like I could just wish him to appear in my room and fix my stress.
But that didn't stop my mind from suggesting other means—my typical means.
While others found me to be some kind of asexual robot that lacked the capability of even comprehending sexual acts, I was indeed a fan of taking care of myself. I was never inclined to have random sex and getting to know someone well enough to have it was an exhausting endeavor. It also took a lot of time that my training schedule didn't afford me. So this method was far more preferred than others.
Burying myself beneath the sheets, Mark's face very vividly appearing in my mind, I lifted my shirt just enough. My fingers hit the hemline of my underwear and I sighed. I'm not sure why I was so nervous but I was. Perhaps it was because my mind was scarily accurate about recreating Mark for this fantasy.
My eyes slipped closed ever so lightly as I felt my legs begin to bend at the knee, spreading just enough. Teeth sunk into my bottom lip as I tried to keep the loud sigh buried as far back in my throat as possible at the feeling of my fingers gliding over the cotton material.
Imaginary Mark was soft with his touch and even softer with his kisses. Real me was turning into an asthmatic mess on the bed, hand buried between my thighs and eyes squeezed shut.
And that's when I heard it. The scream.
My eyes tore open as I lied there frozen.
There was a large amount of coughing filling the room from my unseen visitor. I didn't dare look over. The embarrassment I was already enduring was enough to kill me.
"Shit, I mean-I was just-I can—"
The voice gave everything away. In all my horror, I wished I could somehow become with the very fibers of my bed sheets.
"Y/N."
"Jackson, GET THE FUCK OUT!"
I didn't watch him as he left, instead choosing to stare at the ceiling and curse the very day I was born. Why the fuck was Jackson still hanging around and why the hell did he have to walk into my room at this very second?
Once I was sure I couldn't physically die from this level of embarrassment, I got dressed in actual pants and put a bra on before switching out my shirt and putting hand sanitizer on before opening my door.
And there was Jackson, his big brown eyes going soft and innocent in the hopes I would easily forgive him.
"What the hell dude?"
"This is mostly your fault since you gave me the key code to your door a year ago," he pointed out. "You should've changed it after that."
"Why are you here?"
"Existentially or right here right now?"
My glare was all the answer he needed.
"Instead of where?"
"Oh, I don’t know, Jinyoung's party?"
He gave a simple sigh, "Jinyoung's party got moved to BamBam's house. Something about Jinyoung having explosive diarrhea?"
I laughed, thanking the Heavens for small mercies. "All of a sudden I'm motivated to check out one of Jinyoung's famous parties."
Playfully shoving my arm Jackson laughed himself.
"So let me ask a more specific question," I continued. "Why did you barge into the room? What couldn't wait for as long as it would've taken me to hear you knocking and open the door myself?"
And that’s when Jackson's face changed. For a second, I wondered if he was having flashbacks to a minute before when he walked in on me. But when he shuffled his feet, I figured it was bigger than walking in on his best friend.
Flashing dark eyes at me, a serious expression on his face, he answered. "I needed to ask a favor."
"Okay," I said cautiously.
Silence only followed the statement and I sighed deeply. "Are you going to explain it or...?"
"I can't go into details at this point," he replied, pressing his lips together.
"Then how can I agree to do the favor?"
"Because you're my best friend and I haven't asked for a favor like this before. It's important."
I stared back at him, sizing up the situation. The tone of his voice was verging on desperate. This was probably the most serious I would ever see him and to top it off, his words kind of scared me. Instead of acting dower, I decided to take a note out of Jackson's playbook.
"You didn't kill Coach Yoo did you?"
"No, just Jinyoung."
Though his face wasn't showing any humor, he was definitely joking about Jinyoung. I found myself laughing despite the atmosphere he just created.
"Then I'm already in. Yes I will hide his body in the infirmary."
When he didn't laugh, I decided to shut up. The silence stretched a little longer, but he seemed to be in the process of phrasing his next sentence.
"How important is this?" I asked suddenly, disrupting his mental conversation with himself.
He blinked a couple of times to reorient himself in our physical conversation. "It's the difference between whether I get to continue my training here in Korea or go back to China."
And suddenly the weight of the situation came crashing down. If I had known the severity of this, I wouldn't have made such light jokes. As much as Jackson annoyed me and as much as I always joked about him going back to China, I didn't want him to. He was my best friend and one of the only people keeping me sane besides Youngjae. I needed him here. But even deeper than that, he was my best friend and if he needed me to scale a mountain I would.
"But," he added before I could open my mouth with my answer. "If you agree to do this favor, you can't ask me about it until I tell you. Just know I would owe you big time. Like name my first born after you-level of owing you."
What did I have to lose really? Jackson was my best friend. And besides, it's not like he's asking me to murder anyone. The guy is too much of a social butterfly to put enough effort into hating anyone on that level. So, putting aside any doubt, I gave him a small smile.
"I'll do it."
"You will?" he asked, a childish gleam in his dark brown eyes twinkling back at me. His lips stretched into a hopeful smile and whatever doubt I still had vanished.
"Of course, you're my best friend."
Before I could end the sentence, he picked me up in a bear hug, squeezing me tightly before releasing me.
"You're a lifesaver. I'll let you know when I'm ready to call in that favor."
Placing an obnoxious kiss on my cheek which made me squirm more than anything, he rushed down the hallway, no doubt heading to the party over at BamBam’s. While I was happy agreeing to do this unspecified favor for Jackson, I was still uneasy.
What the hell did I just agree to?

What’s in my bag: my beloved fringed faux leather backpack. Knapsacks aren’t just for school anymore. They’re a fun, hands-free and super trendy way to carry my essentials. I immediately liked its sleek design after lurking it up online for several weeks last year. The fringe detailing also caught my attention. First thing I noticed when it arrived is that it is made out of the softest, most supple material. I absolutely love the slouchy look of it: it has a fun bucket bag element thanks to its tasseled drawstrings. It’s easy to carry, opens and closes with a cinch (and my goodies stays secure thanks to its magnet snap). It is an excellent investment when you think of all the occasions & possibilities this bindle takes me to! I can wear it on my back or in the crook of my arm handbag-style through its top handle. It’s the perfect catchall from work to play! And thought this puppy looks minuscule it has enough space for my whole entire life! Ok I think I gushed about it long enough.
After filling it up with junk I had forgotten about the past few weeks I thought I’d share its content with you guys. Let’s dig in! Oh! Little note: I didn’t add/remove anything just so it could look pretty. I literally flipped it over yesterday & snapped it!
So here’s the content of my bookbag: •My *RF for Lowell (Montreal, represent!✊🏾) wallet. It contains a few coins, my ID and bank cards. I rarely have cash on me💸💳 •a cellphone bill from my mobile provider for this month (which I still haven’t opened to this day..) •my good ol’ Cover FX mirror. This contained my first foundation. My introductory makeup relationship 💏and my longest liaison❤️❤️❤️ •My FIT me pressed powder from Maybelline has shattered since my *profession of love* for it. It is completely gone but I can’t bring myself to part ways with it. There’s a mirror, though.. •my *Dynamite (MTL!🙌🏾) makeup pouch. It contains SYN my *Estée Lauder blotting solution, my nail polish of the moment 💅🏾(Sally Hansen Hard as Nails in 365 - Hard Bitten), my trusty L.A. Girl Pro Conceal HD concealer, my *Colour Riche gloss* from L'Oréal in scarlet concerto, along with a few products that needed their own spot, among them: •my beloved, my preciouuusss (in Gollum’s voice) KVD tattoo liner. I know that you know that you already know how amazing this is. So I’m just going to move right on.. •Nivea lip balm: this makes my pucker feel like butter 👌🏾 •my Bite Beauty agave lip mask. You ‘dolls already know the love I have for this (Insta Story fam, where you at?!). Whenever I go this puppy 🐶 follows.. •another lip product that was rolling around in the bottom of my bag that day was the *NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien which is a great everyday pink-y nude lipstick. •Gummy bears🐻I generally love them❤️ These, not so much (yuck🤢) •*Clean’s Warm Cashmere fragrance: This limited edition bouquet (back in September, sorry 😐) brings me back to the simple moments of comfort, sweater layering on a crisp fall day. To me, it is a vibrant and warm scent in a modern way 😌 •An American Apparel (RIP😪) scrunchie for when my hair mane won’t behave 💁🏾 •*crest strips: #notspon (I wish!) •My secret deodorant because..well..you gotta stay fresh👃🏾🙅🏾 •a vital, indispensable, quintessential; a prerequisite to me leaving the house: earphones because, well, miuzak ON; world OFF🎶😌🎵 •Another essential but for work: my cordless phone charger. A digital content creator’s bestie; •and when Bestie stops coming through, good ol’ Uncle Regular Phone Charger comes to the rescue and restricts me in a corner for a while🔌 •My phone (iPhone7 for those who care) : my personal assistant, my computer, my alarm, my watch, birthdays reminder, oh my! As Ja Rule once said, “Where would I be without youuuuuu?” •*Paul & Joe’s Moisturizing Hand cream. I honestly believe that there are unicorns tears 🦄 😭in this. Plus a dreamy fusion of floral and sweet notes of citrus 🍊, neroli (an essential oil distilled from the flowers of the Seville orange) and vanilla 😇(#notspon - see note #2) •my massive, gigantic, ginormous statement ring I thought I had lost but no, thanks to this post. •My Parisienne YSL perfume. I’ve clearly hit bottom. I have ONE drop left and I am devastated 😪 I still love the juicy, fruity (berries 🍓🍒& pear🍐) and floral (peonies🌸🌺) hint I get coming out of my handbag every now and then.. Parisienne, je t'aime ❤️ •a mini AGATHA Paris notebook for some blog articles ideas 💡 •a pen to lay down said ideas (this one is so sleek and chic!) •markers/highlighters for a very exciting project that I can’t quite talk babble on to you Rosedolls just yet 🙊😌 •this eos lotion container is empty but I *still like* how esthetically pleasing the package is. This Evolution Of Smooth hand cream was incredible, to put it simple. I really miss its pleasant cherry blossom smell. I guess I should repurchase now.. •a bill from my black & white Vans ol skool purchase. I know, they’re everywhere but.. I love 'em! 👟👟 •eyelashes fixative from *Duo (psst..apparently it’s the world’s best-selling lash adhesive brand. I believe it. *YouTube* told me so) •a pair of vintage earrings that I scored for 0.75$ at the thrift store (don’t worry I’ll wipe them with rubbing alcohol AND sanitizer before wearing them✋🏾and don’t knock the thrift store AND #dontjudgeme either) • I finally got around to start *Bossing Up* a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to put it down since. In this book, a captivating memoir-slash-guide, Marketing maverick turned Success Coach *Samantha Kris* shares the story of her meteoric career ascension, earning 5 promotions in 5 years, doubling her salary and propelling her into the(sweet) life of an entrepreneur. She tips the reader off on being about that #boss life by setting precise goals and triumphantly achieving them. A very compelling read. •tweezers to accompany the Duo stickum if my lashes start to act up (I’m a novice at this) •two sachets of raw sugar that I must’ve had brought home from Starbies.
CONCLUSION - I love this bag for the high heavens❤️❤️❤️ CONCLUSION #2 - I tote a LOT of odds and ends around in this purse!
There you are Rosedolls! WANNA KNOW: what is the one thing that you can’t leave the house without? Comment below!
xoxo, Deb

Fa La La: The Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide
It’s my favorite time of the year, you guys: It’s officially socially acceptable to listen to Christmas tunes around the clock, plus I have a valid excuse to spend hours scouring the Internet in search of great gift ideas for you to give your loved ones! (I may also have shopped a little lot in the process. Oops.)
Note: Some of these featured products are from our sponsors, while others are affiliate links that will earn me a small commission.
So without further ado, here’s what I’m digging this year:
FOR THE NOMADIC SOUL
Have a friend or family member in your life who is only satisfied when doing something new, exciting and/or unique? (I know a little something about that!) Well, Tinggly has the cure that ails them. I’ve always been a fan of giving experiences instead of mere stuff, and this is the perfect solution: You can gift your loved one a personalized box that contains a voucher to a bucket list kind of item that most people only dream of. Dinner with a NASA astronaut? James Bond sightseeing tour in Thailand? VIP helicopter over the Vegas Strip? Yoga retreat in India? Tango lesson in Buenos Aires? Tinggly has something for every taste. I also love that you can choose your box by theme: birthday, Christmas, wedding, couples and more.
FOR THE SUN BUM
True story: I allot more space in my luggage to sunglasses than I do to anything else, as heaven forbid I be photographed in the same shades over and over again! But I can’t help it: I’m always outside doing something fun, and if there’s one thing fashion-wise that I care about the most it’s what’s on my face. And I love the selection of women’s sunglasses available at Sunglass Warehouse. I’m a huge fan of Aviators—bonus points if they’re mirrored—and Sunglass Warehouse has so many different kinds of Aviators in stock, many available for under $20. (With as much as I change out my shades, I like keeping my cost per item as low as possible.) For those shopping for the holidays, Sunglass Warehouse is offering 40% off one pair of shades from now through Nov. 30 with the code SPENDLESS40.
FOR THE TECH-HEAVY TRAVELER
We’ve all been there before: You’re traveling all day and your iPhone quickly depletes of all power. It’s near impossible to locate an outlet at an airport, and even my backup battery usually dies well before my travel day has ended (a nightmare scenario as I rely on it for ride-sharing when I finally reach my destination). Which is why Lynktec’s Reeljuice 5X Power Bank + 10 Watt Rapid Wall Charger is my new favorite thing; it’s got four feet of retractable charging cord, and it gives me FIVE full charges before it needs to be re-powered. No more fighting my fellow fliers for coveted outlet space at the airport; in fact, I can even charge my phone while I fly. I’m giving one of these bad boys away down at the bottom of the post, but you can also get 25 percent off (site-wide!) with the code LUNATICATLARGE25.
FOR THE SCIENCE GEEK (OR THE TWEEN)
This Lock Pick Beginners Box is at the very top of my DIY-loving husband’s own list, and for good reason: It gives you the tools (literally and figuratively) that you need to learn how to pick locks, with two different sets of practice locks that have clear sides so that the trainee can see what’s going on behind the scenes with the mechanisms. This is the perfect present for a dude—what husband/boyfriend doesn’t love tinkering?—but also would be a fantastic and affordable option for your fidgety, problem-solving tween.
FOR THE PHILANTHROPIST
You guys know my love for St. Jude runs deep. It’s just so cool what they do there: On top of being one of the top research facilities in the world, St. Jude also ensure that its patients don’t have to worry about a thing (like, for example, cost or lodging for the family) other than getting better. I donate to St. Jude periodically throughout the year, but I’m loving their new initiative, This Shirt. All you have to do is sign up to donate $20 to St. Jude monthly, and you get this exclusive Tee that all your favorite country artists (and your favorite blogger!) are wearing. Because helping others is really the reason for the season.
FOR THE ETERNAL STUDENT
Alert, alert, self plug coming! Kristin Sweeting and I are headed to Portugal next July to teach the ultimate writing, photography, marketing and business workshop—and we’d love for you to join us! We’ve extended registrations through Dec. 31 and have a handful of spots left (and a really amazing group attending so far!). Come learn the ropes of the biz with us while surfing, roaming, doing yoga and exploring Lisbon’s charming surrounds with us in your downtime. Bring your significant other or business partner or come solo. Just think of it as continuing education, a tax write-off and a vacation all rolled into one! As a Christmas special, I’m including two one-hour coaching sessions for anyone who signs up by Dec. 15, one by Skype prior to the trip and one in Portugal.
FOR THE AT-HOME COOK
We’re always experimenting in the kitchen, and try to eat as clean (i.e. no processed food) as possible, meaning that adding herbs and spices is clutch for our style of dining. I’ve had a subscription to Raw Spice Bar for the past year, and I love that every three months, a collection of six individually packaged, freshly-ground, seasonal spices arrives in my mailbox and that I don’t have to commit to buying the entire spice jar before I know I like it. You can even customize your diet to Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, healthy or “eat anything” and, of course, buy more from the Raw Spice Bar shop if you like what you tried.
FOR THE HEALTHY DINER
I’m all about collecting cookbooks, even if SVV is technically the chef in our household. My current favorite is A Beautiful Mess Weekday Weekend, which just came out this month and compiles even more healthy, vegetarian recipes than Elsie and Emma post on their blog. If you already own ABM, may I suggest the following: Laura Lea Balanced, Body Love and Cravings (maybe technically not healthy, but who doesn’t want to look like Chrissy Teigen?!).
FOR THE NEW HOMEOWNER
Earlier this year, my interior designer friend Kendall Simmons and her husband Kane launched Salut Home, a thoughtfully curated collection of home goods and accents, and I drool over all their colorful offerings every time the email hits my inbox. My current obsession? Their new collection of Leah Singh pillows (all things Leah Singh, really)—they have 96 styles in stock! And bonus, they’re on sale for Black Friday (use the code LEAH20), or you can sign up for their newsletter and receive a promo code for 10 percent off.
FOR THE SHUTTERBUG
While I’ll never fully replace my DSLR, ever since my mom gave me the Canon G7X Mark II for Christmas last year, it’s replaced my Canon 6D in my purse as my daily camera. It’s still got the manual settings so I can play around with the exposure, but is small and compact and great for videos. (Check out the travel videos I’ve been making for evidence.)
FOR THE BIG KID IN YOUR LIFE
For SVV’s last birthday, I got him a Phantom 4 Pro+ drone, and he loves it. He was a former aviation tech in the Navy and daydreams about flying all the time. Coupled with his penchant for photography, it was the perfect gift (and has come in handy on many a work project for us, too!). I think the P4 Pro is great for someone who does photography professionally; however, if your loved one isn’t that well-versed in drones yet, I recommend a cheaper, lighter model like the DJI Spark as a starter drone.
FOR THE ADVENTURER
I’ve had five different GoPros since I got my first one seven years ago, and the quality has improved significantly. After watching some of my YouTubers film exclusively with the GoPro Hero 6, I’m adding the newest model to my wishlist for our upcoming ski adventures (and it finally comes equipped with an LCD screen, too—you used to have to buy those a la carte).
FOR THE DOG OWNER
I bought a pair of travel pillows from the entrepreneurs behind Doggie Duffel, and I’m intrigued by their latest (fully-funded) project that’s essentially an all-in-one travel kit for your pup. Ella doesn’t have one of these yet, but I think I know what she’ll be finding under the Christmas tree…
FOR THE ART LOVER
I’ve been a long-time fan (turned friend) of Leslee Mitchell’s, and every time her gorgeous photography pops into my feed, I mentally bookmark it for the next time I’m doing a room makeover. I recently snagged several of her toy car prints, and I’m absolutely in love! Any giftee would be lucky to own a series of prints from this talented artist.
FOR THE SPORTY GIRL
Pretty much all my travel apparel comes from Gap Fit or Athleta—after all, I’m a girl who places comfort above style, but with most athleisure, luckily you can have both!—and a few pieces I’m loving this winter are: this metallic sweatshirt, this jersey keyhole top, this pullover hoodie and these black, leopard-print leggings.
!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? 'http' : 'https';if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + '://' + 'widgets.rewardstyle.com' + '/js/shopthepost.js';d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === 'object') if(d.readyState === 'complete') {window.__stp.init();}}(document, 'script', 'shopthepost-script');
JavaScript is currently disabled in this browser. Reactivate it to view this content.
  FOR THE VINTAGE LOVER
Wish you’d grown up in the 70s? (Me, too.) You can embrace a bygone era with this sleek record player in a portable brief case that doubles as a CD player and has USB ports. Bonus: It comes in five different colors!
FOR YOUR FRIEND WHO WORKS FROM HOME
You know that girl who works in her coziest pajamas and barely leaves her computer desk all day long, except to refill her coffee/water/bourbon glass? (AHEM.) Welllll, how much would she love to upgrade from her ratty old PJs to this amazing unicorn onesie? (Really bad, I’ll tell ya!) For one that’s a bit more subtle, Nordstrom currently has this beauty on sale.
Stocking Stuffers Under $50
Savannah Bee Co. body products. I was stoked when I recently spotted Savannah Bee’s entire line, like this body butter, for sale at Target!
Geometric rings. Psst, SVV, looking for something small to get me? Start here.
Paddywax candle. My favorite candles are those that you can reuse the container as tabletop decor after it’s burned out.
Herb mill and grinder. As someone who’s very lazy in the kitchen, I love any tool that does the hard work for me.
S’well bottle. My cousins gave me one of these nifty canteens two years ago, and it’s been a game changer in my travels as I no longer have to abuse the planet by buying bottled water.
Stocking Stuffers Under $20
Taylor Swift’s reputation album. The Old Taylor can’t come to the phone because she’s out there SLAYING it with her new album. Man, this one is going to rack up the awards, and it should be in any music lover’s repertoire of tunes.
Flamingo ornament. I’m a sucker for all things flamingos and also ornaments, and Nordstrom at Home has a whole lot of cute, travel-themed ones, many of which are on sale.
Vintage maps. SVV and I are map lovers to the core. We own more than 30 globes and a number of vintage maps, but those are tough to find, which is why I like this Etsy store, which has both domestic and international city prints.
Monogrammed copper wine stopper. Because who doesn’t want their initial atop their vino?!
Twist Magazine’s winter issue. Launched by my good friend Keryn, this new travel publication is a gorgeous glossy that’s the perfect stuffer for the family traveler.
A taco holder. What taco lover doesn’t need this in their life?!
Stocking Stuffers Under $10
Sheet masks. I’ve been addicted to sheet masking for a year now, and while the TonyMoly variety pack is my go-to order, I’m equally as obsessed with these reindeer and penguin masks from Target.
eos holiday lip balm. I keep an eos in every bag I own, and I just popped this trio of holiday flavors (peppermint mocha, vanilla bean, ginger) into my shopping cart!
A manatee tea infuser. Or if manatees aren’t your thing (you crazy), there’s also a sloth, shark or loch ness monster.
iPhone charging cords in myriad colors. Show of hands if you, like me, are always on the hunt for that missing iPhone/USB/mini-USB cord?
The Oregon Trail Card Came. Because kids these days don’t even know what it’s like to ford a river and then die of dysentery when you’re almost there.
Pop socket. This little doodad changed my life—and made me stop dropping my iPhone altogether. I didn’t know how I’d feel about it, but I love it.
Rare earth magnets. We bought these to tack things to our wall on our four-month RTW cruise, and they’ve been a game-changer on actually keeping all of our cards and photos up on the fridge. They never fall, like, ever.
Since it doesn’t feel like the holidays until I start giving away gifts, I’m giving away one big C&C stocking stuffer grab bag, full of some of my favorite things, including the Lynktec charging station, a selection of Raw Spice Bar spices, and plenty of other stocking stuffers for you to give your family and friends (or keep for yourself—I won’t judge!). The value of this box o’ fun is currently over $300—also brimming with music, beauty items, and other odds and ends I’ve purchased and wanted to share with you—though I’ll likely continue to add to that as I finish my Black Friday shopping.
All you have to do to enter is tell me your favorite holiday tradition. Don’t have one? Tell me what’s the top of your Christmas wishlist! It’s that simple. Leave a comment below, and I’ll randomly choose a winner of this bag o’ fun on Dec. 1.

  Reed Diffusers and Candles
Tumblr media
Product review! About 2 months ago, I shared on a video our candles and Reed Diffusers. I popped open a reed diffusers for that video and I’ve had it in my office ever since. It’s the pomegranate blood orange. It has a nice scent and every time I come into my office, it brightens and lifts my mood a bit because it’s smells so nice and definitely not overpowering. So, tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I’ve been working on doing some deep cleaning in our house.
I grabbed the Frosted Balsam Reed Diffuser to put in our front bathroom and it is just Great! I know my family will enjoy the wintery scent. $19.99
As for the candles, I’ve had our Spice Wreath Candle on our kitchen table. I don’t burn it that often, but it is by far my favorite scent and candle. It has notes of Apple, mulling spices, pomander, juniper berry and pumpkin. $11.99

You know what’s funny about the next item? It’s a piece if jewelry and I’ve had it since RepFest in Nashville in August. Sparkle like you mean it, best wishes necklace. 6 different necklaces and they come nicely packaged with a box, perfect small gift. I have the Merry one and I supposed it’s holly? I love the bow, it would match my earrings.
Another Fun Fact: these earrings were a gift from my upline in Avon. They are Tiffanys & Company Jewelry, ya know in the blue box? But she was able to purchase these with points that Avon gives reps when they build their business. She also ordered a coach purse and wallet for herself. Super nice EXTRA that Avon offers representatives.
Yet Another Fun Fact! Tiffany & company Jewlery once had appeared in Avon brochures and even showcased a $200,000 sapphire and diamond ring at one time!
This piece of jewelry! Sells for $9.99

18 simple ways to keep your kids entertained on long flights
Did you travel as a child? Do you remember loving every second of it? Chances are, you probably didn’t. Once you got where you were going, GAME ON! But traveling can be difficult when it comes to keeping kids entertained on long flights. Rather than anxiously awaiting your upcoming airplane fiasco, do some planning ahead. Long flights with kids can be fun flights with kids – if you play your cards right.
Truth be told, kids of any age can present patience-testing behaviors when they’re cooped up in an airplane for a painfully long time. However, the younger the child, the more prone you’ll probably be to having to deal with boredom (and other possible outbursts). Before you take off, take note of these 18 ways to keep your kids entertained on long flights.
Keeping Younger Kids Entertained On Long Flights
Look, we get it. You don’t let your kids watch TV for hours on end at home. Maybe they’re only allowed to play with the iPad for 90 minutes – only if their homework is finished or they’ve been good all day. It’s a great practice, but when you’re on an airplane with them for, let’s say, 15 hours on your way to Tanzania? Well, we get that too – you need to cave. Let those at-home rules slide a bit. When they’re happily humming along in coach class, you’ll be glad you did.
1. Coloring
Grab a few of your kids’ favorite coloring books before take-off (not too many – they’ll make that carry-on a bit heavy!), or, take a look around PBS.org and Parenting.com for single pages to print for coloring later. Pro tip: Permanent markers are bright and bold, but they’re not good for planes. Some people are sensitive to the smell. And really, you don’t want to have to apologize for your kid accidentally destroying something by leaving their permanent rendition of “I ♥️ Mom” scrawled all over it. If your children are old enough, colored pencils are best. If younger and more prone to poking someone in the eye, stick with crayons.
2. Simple jewelry
Grab a couple baggies and toss in paper clips, beads, buttons, and dried pasta (elbows or ditalini work well for this). Let the kids go to town on making jewelry that won’t be missed if it gets lost or damaged. Remember, while your tweens and teens won’t be interested in this crafty activity, it is best for children over the age of eight – the last thing you need on a plane is a mess to clean up.
3. Snack & craft
Don’t mix this with the “simple jewelry” suggestion, as we’d hate for your little ones to accidentally eat a bead or a button. For this version, bring some string and Cheerios to make necklaces with… and then eat them later!
4. New toy surprise
No need for extravagant gadgets and pricy items. Swing by a dollar store, Wal-Mart, or Target and buy small (cheap!) toys. Wrap them, if you’re feeling fun. Most importantly: Don’t tell your kids you’re doing this. Save these for the plane ride when a surprise toy may take up a solid 30 minutes of time.
5. Mini Etch-a-sketch
If you can find one, these smaller versions of our childhood favorite are perfect for planes. They’re mess-free, completely contained, require no batteries, and can be dropped or squished without breaking.
6. Window clings
Whether gel or simple, these are a mess-free way to pass some time. Give your kid the window seat, open the window clings, and let him or her go to town!

7. Snacks (but not just any snacks)
You’re traveling. You’ll bring snacks regardless. But for the longer flights with the younger kids, foods that take longer to eat will be your friend! Things like mini boxes of raisins, string cheese, licorice, and oranges all take longer to prep (and in some cases, chew!).
Keeping Older Kids Entertained On Long Flights
We said it before, and we’ll say it again: Now is not the time to limit your teen’s time on his or her device. If it keeps them occupied and fills a few hours of their travel time, so be it! Fortunately though, settling in with the iPad isn’t the only way to pass the time…
8. Laptop
Sometimes you need to have… more. If a tablet doesn’t do it for you or your kids, bring a laptop. Generally speaking, you’ll have more space (digitally), more apps, and – should you decide to spend time online – a full keyboard.
9. “Workbooks”
Power down the devices for a few hours and go old school with crosswords, word searches, word games, and more.
10. Coloring books
This is not a repeat. We repeat: This is not a repeat. Adult coloring books have gained tons of popularity recently, and there are books of just about any theme imaginable. Grab your colored pencils and decorate something intricate!
11. Magnetic travel games
These may take a bit of looking to find (hello, Amazon!), but they’re meant for situations just like this! Since they’re magnetic, you don’t need to worry about the pieces falling between the seats or flying all over the plane during turbulence (or temper tantrums).
Keeping ANY Kids Entertained On Long Flights
12. WIFI
If WiFi is available on your flight, by all means GET IT! Play games that require an internet connection, stream videos, watch movies, surf the web, and update your Facebook any time you want. Bonus: Some airlines offer free in-flight perks, so check with them before you go (for example, Southwest often has free streaming TV, even though the rest of the internet isn’t accessible unless you pay).
13. Card games
Great for all ages, cards are small, lightweight, easy to replace, and require no batteries! Know your audience and bring what makes sense for everyone – Go Fish for the younger ones, UNO for the whole family, and a Phase 10 or a standard deck of cards for the older kids.
14. Bargaining chips
No matter how well-behaved your children are, they’re likely to get a bit stir-crazy during a 20-hour flight to Australia. When tempers flare and grumpiness prevails, you’ll have an ace in the hole. Bring things with you that are normally off limits (or special treats). Candies, special markers, donuts – whatever it is they can’t normally have, bring it with you and break it out at the moment bargaining becomes inevitable.
15. Good headphones
Spring for the noise-cancelling variety. Not only will you be able to hear what you’re watching/playing well, you and your children won’t hear the couple arguing behind you, the gentleman snoring in front of you, the engine to the side of you, or the screeching infant in 4B. Leave the earbuds at home.
16. Pajamas
When possible, book overnight travel. The caveat here: Know your kids. If falling asleep on a plane isn’t likely, skip this. If it IS, by all means, find the latest flight possible – you won’t be entertaining for 13 hours straight if you’re all asleep! Bonus: You get to wake up in Thailand!
17. The old stand-by’s
You know the drill – bring the “regulars” with you. Magazines, books, gaming systems (Nintendo DS, for example), portable music players, e-readers, Where’s Waldo, portable DVD players, and favorite DVDs/movies will help pass a nice chunk of time. Plus, if these are already favorites at home, they go a long way toward keeping kids entertained on long flights.
18. Extra tip: Comfort items
This isn’t so much “something to do” as it is “something that will help the time not drag on even longer.” Oftentimes, kids are perfectly happy flying and watching what’s going on around them… until they don’t feel so great. You can’t bring the whole pharmacy with you, but toss a few necessities in your purse (like Tylenol, Dramamine, ear drops, chapstick, gum, wet wipes, and pacifiers).
Runner up: Play-Doh
We didn’t include this on the list because it’s not a sure thing to get through security. While it’s not on the TSA’s banned items list, agents have long been told to ‘use their discretion’ with these products. It’s inexpensive enough that you can toss it in the trash without having to worry, but we suggest not bringing it as a foundational item.
While these 18 tips can work wonders when it comes to keeping kids entertained on long flights, you’ll probably still have a few ‘moments.’ Just remember: Practice empathy, embrace patience, and laugh as often as possible. It’ll make you all feel better.
What do you bring with you on long flights? Is there one thing your kids just MUST have? Share them with us in the comments below!

The 13 Best Gift Cards to Sell – And the Worst One!
Not all gift cards are created equally, so it’s good to know which ones will fetch you the most money for your card value, and which ones won’t. Generally speaking, the larger, more well-known a store is, the more you’ll be able to get for your card.
So here they are, the best cards to sell, in no particular order:
Apple Gift Cards
It’s no wonder that Apple gift cards are great to sell. You either love Apple and all of their products or you don’t have much use for them. The reason people love these cards is because you can get everything from music to movies and games and more, all with one card. It puts a lot of purchasing power at your fingertips, but mostly if you are an iPhone or Mac User.
Apple gift cards fly off the shelf around Christmas time because they are one of the best gifts to give to teens and Millennials. With so many different buying options many people consider them as good as cash since they would just end up spending their cash for these items anyway.
If you find yourself with an Apple gift card but you’re a PC and Android user, it’s almost a no brainer to trade it in for cash to get stuff that you will actually use. All of the things you can buy with an Apple gift card you can buy with cash either through Google Play or other online retailers.
Walmart Gift Cards
As one of the largest retail companies in the world, trading a Walmart gift card for cash is pretty easy, and will get you more than other cards. This is because it’s easy to resell a Walmart gift card later, since so many people shop there as part of their weekly routine.
Walmart is known for their everyday low prices on pretty much everything you can think of. Some Walmarts even have fresh produce and an entire grocery department. That’s why they are so popular, and people get excited when a new Walmart opens up near them.
If you don’t make a weekly trip to Walmart, or you tend to avoid it altogether, you should definitely get your hands on some PayPal money instead. This will be far more valuable to you than having that Walmart card sitting in your wallet one minute more.
Target Gift Cards
Just about everyone loves shopping at Target. After all, they offer a clean, well-lit environment full of high-quality merchandise and friendly employees. You can get just about anything there from electronics to clothing, and some food items.
Target is known as a great destination for back to school shopping, because they have everything from school supplies to clothing items for kids that will have them ready for the first day of school.
But if you are not big on shopping at Target it’s time to turn that card into some cash that you can use at a store you do like. You can always use that money to get the same type of items you would at Target, but instead you could buy them online and maybe save some money in the process.
Sam’s Club Gift Cards
Just like Walmart, Sam’s Club is another store that many people frequent each week. It is known for its bulk deals where you can get lots of one item all at once for a decent price. You have to have a Sam’s Club membership in order to make purchases, and often they will ask to see your membership card at the front door.
If you’re not currently a member of Sam’s Club, then a Sam’s Club gift card might not be the thing for you. You’d have to buy a membership first before you’d be able to use your gift card. Or maybe the thought of getting 5 pounds of something when you normally only get one pound is a little overwhelming.
The good news is that you can get top value for your card because there will always be Sam’s Club members who are ready to buy a Sam’s Club gift card at a reduced price.
CVS Pharmacy Gift Cards
CVS Pharmacy is a popular and convenient way to get prescriptions and over the counter drugs in many local cities and towns.
Most people enjoy shopping at CVS Pharmacy because they are generally located on a corner so they are easy to get into and out of, and they have all of life’s basic necessities including things like cough medicine and painkillers, as well as a wide selection of snacks and cold drinks.
However, if you don’t have a CVS pharmacy near you or you don’t see yourself shopping there enough to justify keeping the card, you’d be better off with some cash so that you can use it at stores all over the Internet.
GameStop Gift Cards
GameStop is the place to go when you want reduced-priced video games and video game systems. You can take your used games there and they will buy them from you at a largely reduced cost, and then label them for resale in the store. They also sell new games and consoles such as the Nintendo Switch.
A gamer would go nuts in a GameStop because not only do they have a ton of things to buy, the staff there are fellow Gamers and are ready and willing to spend as much time talking about video games as you are willing to spend.
However, if you’re not much of a gamer then you wouldn’t have much use for a GameStop gift card. The good news is that since so many video game players are fanatic about their particular games you can trade your GameStop gift card for cash quite easily.
Toys R Us Gift Cards
Especially around Christmas time, Toys R Us gift cards are in high demand. But you shouldn’t have any trouble selling them year round because parents are always looking for a new toy to get their kid. Toymakers are always coming out with the latest and greatest, and there are always new video games and gaming systems hitting the market.
You shouldn’t have any trouble selling your Toys R Us gift card and using that money to buy something other than a toy. There’s always a high demand for these cards, and in no time you’ll be able to get some money to your PayPal account which you can use how you see fit.
GNC Gift Cards
GNC is the place to go when you want to add muscle to your frame, or lose some weight, or just be healthier in general. They have a an eclectic mix of bodybuilding supplements, vitamins, diet pills, and more. If you’re trying to get in shape you’ll be like a kid in a candy store.
If you’re not trying to get in shape, or you just don’t subscribe to these sort of methods, you will want to get some cash for that card and do your own thing. After all, it is possible to get in shape without a bunch of shakes and pills.
Gap Gift Cards
The Gap has been a popular clothing store for several decades now and shows no signs of slowing down. You probably received a Gap card because your friend or family member wanted you to look your best, or maybe they thought based on your style that you must shop at the Gap.
It’s easy to confuse Gap and Old Navy because they are both owned by the same parent company. Old Navy was designed as a less expensive version of the Gap, with similar styles and looks at lower prices.
If you are not a gap Shopper then you probably won’t want to keep that Gap gift card and your best bet is to sell it and put the money to good use. You can either buy clothes you do like, or buy anything else you’d like.
COACH Gift Cards
Coach produces some very high-end purses and clutches, but if it’s not your style or you can’t justify buying such a high priced item, you’d be better off getting cash for it so you can shop at stores that are more to your liking.
With the kind of money that Coach bags cost, you’ll have no trouble getting a good amount of money for your gift card. The big question will be where do you want to spend it. That’s a good problem to have, instead of having the problem of an unused gift card going to waste in your purse.
Bose Gift Cards
Bose produces some pretty amazing audio technology, including headphones and home stereo systems that make it seem like it’s surround sound even when there’s only one speaker. They’ve been making cutting-edge audio products for several decades now, and they just seem to get better and better at what they do.
If you are not an audiophile or just not in the market for a high-end pair of headphones or a new speaker system, you should trade in your Bose gift card for cash and get something you’ll use every day and enjoy even more. The good news is that because most of the items in a Bose store cost hundreds of dollars you should be able to get a decent chunk of change for your card and use it somewhere else.
Marriott Gift Cards
The Marriott is known for it’s well-appointed rooms in all of the best locations throughout the world. They have a vacation club that is second-to-none and allows you to trade your points for great destinations everywhere. But if you find yourself with a Marriott gift card that you don’t see yourself using, it just makes sense to trade it in and get money you can use elsewhere.
One of the great things about trading in your hotel gift card is that you won’t have to use the card money you get for another hotel room. You can use it for anything you want which is one of the main reasons people sell their gift cards in the first place. No one likes to be fenced in to using a card at a specific location.
MC Sports Gift Cards
MC Sports is a popular destination for sports gear of all types, which is why it is one of the more popular gift cards to be given during the holidays. Rather than guess which sports equipment you need or which size you are, many relatives will simply get you a sporting goods gift card so you can go and try things on before you buy them.
It just makes sense to get a gift card from a sports shop rather than get you the actual item because then you don’t have to worry if it fits or not or if it’s the right version of what you need. The best of intentions are usually behind a sporting goods gift card.
This is one of the hot back to school gift cards that are given from aunts and uncles and grandparents, but maybe you’d rather use the card at a place like Play It Again Sports where you can get really good deals on used sports equipment and save some bucks.
The Worst Gift Card
In terms of selling your gift card, the worst gift card you can receive is the one from the hyperlocal, only-one-in-the-world restaurant or store that is only in your hometown. This kind of card will only have value locally, so your best bet is to try to sell it to a friend who frequents that establishment.
You can also try contacting us and seeing what we can do. We may be able to add the card to our eligible cards list and offer you something for it in the future.
Buying Gift Cards Is What We Do
You’ve come to the right place if you are ready to sell your gift card. Buying gift cards is what we do and we’ve made it really easy for you to take a card you don’t want and turn it into cold hard cash, right into your paypal account. All you have to do is check your card’s value to see what we are willing to offer. And if it’s acceptable, simply sign up, enter the card information, and await your payment.

A Personal Reflection on Singapore
Written by Ernesto Breton, Stephen Petronio Company Dancer
Tumblr media
The final leg of our trip took us to the city-state of Singapore. Its majestic city skyline and busy nature reminded me of the concrete jungle back home. After teaching and living in Thailand and Vietnam for the first three weeks of this tour, we were now surrounded by an ostentatious pageant of wealth that could rival any international city of the West.
As a native New Yorker, this city was a return to what I was used to: people hurrying passed each other in concerted matrixes, cars rushing to make their respective green streetlights, the sounds of palm tree leaves dancing with the wind down a quiet side street, and the accessibility of everything. High-rises dominate the horizon with little enclaves of gorgeous colonial era revivals and private McMansions holding fast to the grounds changing all around them. This massive leap forward is in part a result of the ruling party’s semi-authoritarian government. In layman’s terms, they figured Singaporeans would rather be told what to do and think after their abrupt and unilateral divorce with Malaysia, than starve and have anarchy run rampant.

It’s a tough proposition, as an American, to support. Would I rather have my basic civil liberties stripped from me for the good of society, or would I choose to live freely and let the will of the people decide their own fate – even if that meant the uncertainty and volatility of unstable governments? In retrospect, Singapore has long since moved past its struggling beginnings and now dominates as a major global commerce, finance, and transport hub. Not once did I see a homeless person on the street, and the city seems to have an extensive social security net. One of the special populations I visited was a select group of kids at the Spectra Secondary School. This secondary school was designed for students who didn’t obtain strong academic achievements, or were undisciplined at the early stages of their schooling, and as a result were brought there as an alternative to falling behind. We started the first day of workshops by having Stephen teach a quick warm-up. This proved to be one of our more challenging times with them. With the group being about forty strong and the workshops taking place in a gymnasium, it was hard to orate the steps without the space swallowing the sound as it left your mouth. Their curiosity also led them to talk amongst themselves – and no I’m not coddling the situation. I could honestly say that they were just trying to figure out what they were seeing. > If there is one thing my colleagues learned from me during this tour it is my capacity to rein in a group of rowdy kids – but in Spectra, I didn’t see it necessary. < We played a series of call and response games and added choreographic elements like mirroring, sounds, and syncopations to the movements. Towards the end of day one, we broke the students up into two mirroring lines and had them perform the choreography while moving forward, keeping with their groups. I saw kids that were extremely timid break through by helping others that were falling behind. And others, take charge when things went awry. Their capacity to problem solve on the spot was strong and it reminded me of the fun that could be had while working and making skillful connections.
Tumblr media
Day two at Spectra started off with Stephen, Nick, Josh, and myself jumping into choreographic games with the kids. We were afraid that they were going to be over us but they were giddy to jump straight into the work. We quickly broke up into four large groups and had them follow either Stephen, Josh, Nick or myself. In my group, I wanted to share being a leader so I had the kids follow someone and when that person saw an opportunity to pass the baton, they did. Without trying to mitigate the course of the group too much, I took a back seat and let their imaginations lead the group through the whole gymnasium. We ended the day by having them create movement using eight of the call and response moves they had played around with earlier. We coached them when needed but for the most part, we enjoyed watching them figure things out and work as a group. At the end of the day, we staged the four pieces for some faculty and the school’s principle who were there to see what the kids had been up to. We were truly happy to have had such a successful workshop and we hope that they gained the confidence to stand by their abilities. I later found out that the school creates a safety net for its students by providing the kids with vocational studies; if they can’t achieve academic success, they can at least be a productive member of society with a trade. This safety net is great, but how can one possibly know a child’s true potential at that early of an age? The kids participating in these workshops were in their early or pre-teen years, and to me, their lives were already categorically decided for them. I understand that my participation with them only revealed the tip of the iceberg of their individual capacities, but I still question this crazy obsession by rigid educational systems to have kids strive to be great academic scholars at an early stage, rather than enjoy their early years through other creative and effective means. The pressure to be a great scholar was tangible. And sadly, I don’t think this pressure is being levied on to them by Spectra. On the contrary, I think Spectra is trying to find ways to keep these kids engaged and motivated in their work. I was happy to be a part of a workshop, sought by the school, to help further these kids with their education. They were as skillful and curious as any other bunch of young and pre-teenagers that I have taught back in the States.
Addendum:
Singapore was the clean city I had read about online. Most of the buildings are LEED certified green and its city planners demonstrated a keen understanding of how to create space where space was not available. When I wasn’t prepping for a workshop or eating by the poolside of my hotel, I was able to navigate the city without questioning my sense of direction. Everyone speaks English for the most part. You’ll enjoy Singapore if you want to: consume a delicious array of Thai, Malay, and Chinese cuisines; shop at high-end and cheaper Western clothing stores; have a deep purse to support you; experience a vibrant melting pot of different cultures; get sun poisoning by the pool even if it’s cloudy; or experience the hot and humid tropical weather.
