You can feel the coolness of the air against your skin, but time has blurred—how long had you been driving to get here?
The engine is off, and through the fog of exhaustion, you see Carol swinging her legs over the bike to dismount. The shift of her weight makes Daryl’s grip on you tighten instinctively, keeping you steady against him. You don’t hear Daryl’s response, but you can feel the small nod he gives, his body shifting slightly beneath you as Rick’s footsteps recede. Only then does Daryl pull back a bit to get a good look at you. His eyes are full of worry, scanning your face, taking in the bruises, the cuts, and the strain that still lingers in your expression.
Your eyes meet his, the fog of sleep slowly clearing from your mind. “Dare…” you whisper, your voice hoarse and weak.
“Everything’s alright,” he reassures you, his tone rough yet soft. “We made it to the highway. Everyone’s here.” One of his hands comes up to tuck a loose strand of hair behind your ear. The gesture is so gentle, but there’s a deep pain in his eyes as he continues to look at you, taking in the bruises beginning to form on your jaw, the marks around your neck. His thumb brushes lightly over the tender skin, and you can tell it hurts him to see you like this.
“Come on,” he says quietly, the tenderness still there as he shifts beneath you. Lori stands from hugging Carl, her voice small, “Shane?” she looks at Rick, then her eyes flicker to you, the front of you covered in deep brown and red stains.
You look up into her eyes, your chin trembling, and shake your head. Lori’s eyes search yours, then flicker to the ground, collecting herself.
“Andrea?” Glenn asks, shock plaguing his expression.
“She saved me then I lost her,” Carol explains, looking around hopelessly.
“We saw her go down,” T-Dog says quietly.
“Patricia?” Hershel asks.
Beth’s quiet voice pipes up that she had been taken down too. She asks about Jimmy, but Rick explains he was in the RV when it was overrun. The realization of how many have been lost settles heavily over the group, the air thick with grief. The stillness presses down, suffocating in its weight.
More questions arise, murmurs of Andrea’s whereabouts, but Daryl senses your growing exhaustion—the way your body trembles against him, barely able to hold itself up. Without a word, he slips his other arm under your armpit, gently lowering you to the ground beside a car tire. You don’t resist. Your body is screaming for relief.

Your breath catches in your throat, feeling like a brick sits on your chest. The memories rush back—Shane’s hands on you, the fear, the feeling of sinking the knife into his chest. You swallow hard, your body beginning to shake as you try to find the words. “I... I didn’t tell you,” you start, your voice thick with emotion. “I’m sorry, Rick. I didn’t mean to go behind your back. I just thought... If I could get Randall out, maybe I could stop everything from falling apart. Thought maybe you’d notice in time.”
Your voice cracks as you look at him. “I didn’t mean for it to go so badly. I’m so sorry.”
Rick shakes his head, his expression pained but understanding. “You did what you thought was right. You were tryin’ to protect us all,”
Tears well in your eyes, and you try to blink them away, but the guilt burns in your chest as you can’t bear to look at him anymore, “I didn’t tell you. I should’ve waited... should’ve told you the plan before I acted. Shane... he killed Randall. He came for me. He had it all planned. First me, then you. I had to run, Rick. I didn’t know what else to do. All I could think about was getting out of there alive...”
Your voice trails off as your chin trembles, the words getting caught in your throat and only managing to whisper now, “I didn’t want to kill him, Rick. I swear, I didn’t. But I had no choice.”
Rick's eyes soften even more, and he reaches out, placing a hand under your chin to gently pull your face to look at him, “You had to survive. You did what any of us would’ve done.”
You shake your head, tears falling now, the pressure of everything pressing down on you. “I just didn’t want it to end like this.”
Rick lets out a breath, his hand still steadying you. “None of us did. I should’ve been there. I should’ve stopped it before it got this far.”
You look up at him, and for the first time, you see the guilt on his face too—the burden he’s carrying, the decisions he’s had to make. The regret of not dealing with Shane like he had wanted to.
“I’m sorry,” Rick continues, his voice strained, letting his hand fall back to his side, “You shouldn’t have had to do that.”

Daryl kneels back down beside you as Rick makes his way back over to the others, his eyes flickering over your bloodied, torn clothes, and he frowns, concern etched deeply into his features. You try to sit up straighter, but the pain shoots through your ribs, making you wince. Immediately, Daryl’s hands are on you, steadying you with a firm but gentle grip.
“Easy,” he murmurs, his breath warm against your cheek as he leans in to help you sit up. “Ain’t gotta rush.”
His hand lingers on your back, his thumb brushing lightly over the fabric of your shirt, as if he’s afraid to cause you more pain but also reluctant to let go. He brings you up gently to take you behind some of the overturned cars to change behind what little privacy they offer.
“Let’s get you outta these,” he says quietly, his voice rough but tender. He reaches for the hem of your shirt, hesitating for a second as his eyes meet yours again, searching for any sign of discomfort. 
You nod faintly, giving him silent permission. There’s no awkwardness between you, just a quiet intimacy, born from the countless times he’s cared for you in moments like this—whether it was bandaging cuts from hunting trips or lifting you out of danger.

Goals
Kk. I’m gonna get all reflective here.
I met a goal today in my recovery/health journey, one I honestly didn’t know if it was realistically obtainable. It’s kinda crazy to think I’m here.
When I started this whole thing I set several goals so it wouldn’t seem overwhelming:
Walk for 5 mins on the tread (chemo and radiation really did a job on my body, strength, endurance)
Walk for 10 mins
Walk for 15
You can do 30 mins! Take it to the streets, girl! (I now do 45 mins, 2 mi, 6 days a week)
Weight loss: Make it to that big round number. It took several months but I hit it Dec 2023. Holy shit!!! I did it! Feeling good too. Cancer team happy (and impressed)
Not done; new goal. That vague number my boss lady and I used to talk about. “I would like to lose weight. I don’t mean skinny, y’know like ___ That would be great.” Hit it April 2024
Yay me, but I can do better. “My twitter/tumbler friend who lost a shit ton of weight. She made it to ___ and looked fucking fabulous. Let’s get there next.” Done. Today. Un fricken believable! I look at my husband and I’m all “This is crazy! How is this happening?! Is this real life?!”
Indeed it is. So new goal started today. Get to my “met you weight” meaning the weight I was at when I met my husband. Granted it’ll look a bit different 5 kids and loose skin later, but damn. It’s obtainable and I never ever EVER thought it was!
And two pounds after that my weight loss total will be a big ass amount they love to write about in magazines’ year end or weight loss editions … “she lost half her size, see how she did it!” Those magazines.
My calorie/weight loss app says I can do it by Nov 1st. I think it’ll be more like Thanksgiving. My foot is fucked up and I need to stay off it for a while so it’ll be a slower rate of loss. But then I will be done. The emphasis will change at that point. No more losing. Maintaining. And tightening everything up.
I’m celebrating meeting this latest weight loss goal today with a small banana split! I know, right.

Had to Restart Keto...AGAIN!😖😤🙄
Ugh, I get so frustrated with myself. I allow stress from life and, especially from work, to drive me to binge eating. Last weekend was a hot mess!🤐😒
Anyway, I think I may have finally cracked the code on how to follow a diet and workout plan that will work for me. There are several components that had to come together for this. I am tentatively hopeful because this seems to be working for me (since I got back on the wagon around mid-last week.) So here's how my plan looks right now:
Eating & Diet:
Intermittent Fasting (18:6) - I currently eat between 12:30pm-6:30pm. I am using the Fasting Tracker App (the free version), but I am sure any Intermittent Fasting app will work for this. The app also allows me to keep track of my weight and water intake.
Low carb to Keto Diet - It will take me about 3 weeks to get down to 20 grams of net Carbs a day in any sustainable way. I'm about sustainability at this point in my life. I am starting with around 40-50 grams of net carbs to ease my body into it AND to figure out the foods I like that also fit this way of eating.
Phentermine 37.5g - I am not taking it as prescribed but instead am using the Dr. Childs Method (which I have found much more gentle on my body and nervous system with no disruption to my sleep so far!). The Gist: The gist of his method is to use episodic intermittent fasting (so as not to damage your metabolism) along with Phentermine, which means you will only take Phentermine a max of 3 times a week on the days that you are practicing your prolonged or episodic fasting. On those days, during your eating window, only eat about 500 calories. I am going to only take a 1/2 a pill, 3x per week, during my prolonged fasting days for the month of October. P.S. I am following his method but got the actual prescription through telemedicine, so I am not using the products Dr. Childs actually markets on his website.
Workouts
Twice a Day Gentle & Skin Tightening & Muscle Tightening workouts - So I recognize that I can and will lose weight fast using the three things above in combination. However, I don't want to be left with a lot of loose skin. By the time I go home to see my family for Christmas (in about 3 months), I don't want to be the same fatty I was when they saw me last Christmas (I am not fat shaming, I am only speaking about myself when I use that term). Anywho, I have figured out that multiple, gentle workouts (that have proven effective for me) in the past is the way to go. At most, I will put in about 40 minutes per workout session.
A.M. Workout: 2, Oxycise! workouts, which are about 20 minutes each (I love this workout! It's no impact and is a perfect thing to start with if you don't want to go to the gym or have limited space). They have some university tested results on their website about the effectiveness of this workout, and about 90% of people involved in the test lost between 1/4 lb to 1/2 lb per 20 minute workout. I can attest to it being that effective. Like anything, you just have to be consistent. I highly suggest you doing the monthly subscription through the Oxycise! app (about $20 a month with access to a nice size workout library) if you are interested. Oxycise will serve as my cardio on this weight loss journey.
P.M. Workout: 2, Winsor Pilates workouts (the 20 minute ones), this is about 40 minutes total before bed. Since for me personally doing Pilates makes me very tired, I opt to do this workout in the evening. Pilates impacts everyone differently so try and see what works for you. Subscription through the Winsor Pilates app/website is about $30 a year and I do think it is worth it. Per it's advertising in it's heyday (back in the early 2000s), you can lose a dress size after 10 workouts. I tried this back in 2003 when I was home on Winter break from college visiting my family---y'all no cap, I went from a 16 dress size to a 10 dress size by doing one 20-minute Winsor Pilates workout every day!🥳 Like I had to get new clothes before going back to school. So yes this workout is very effective if you clean up your eating habits. Now I realize that was over 20 years ago when that happened but the fact remains this is an effective workout if you do it regularly. Winsor Pilates will serve as my resistance training on this weight loss journey.
For this next week, I will only do one of each workout in the morning and in the evening. I need to ease into what I am doing and get familiar with what I am asking my body to do, therefore I am ok starting slowly.
This is where I am at now and I will record how I am doing in a few days.
My Goal
So with all of these items combined above, I want to get my dress size down to around a 6-8 before I go home for Christmas to see my family. I am currently around a size 20, but I know my body and I can drop inches very consistently when I am on Keto and doing Pilates. Yes this is an ambitious goal but I am hopeful.
