Aloha, fellow adventurers! Today, I'm thrilled to share with you the incredible Hawaiian experience we had with Prolific Escapes, the mastermind behind our dream vacation. Day 1: Arrival in Oahu After an exciting flight booked by Prolific Escapes, we arrived in Honolulu, Oahu. Greeted warmly by our tour guide, we were whisked away to our stunning beachfront resort. As we checked into our comfortable rooms, the captivating view of the turquoise waters left us in awe, setting the tone for the magical journey ahead.
Day 2: Exploring Pearl Harbor and Waikiki Beach Prolific Escapes crafted an unforgettable day for us, starting with a visit to the historic Pearl Harbor. It was a humbling experience as we paid our respects to those who lost their lives during World War II. Later, we relished the sun-kissed paradise of Waikiki Beach, where the soft sands and crashing waves enchanted us all.

🌄 Unveiling the Mysteries of The Haiku Stairs 🏞️
Nestled deep within the lush, emerald heart of Oahu, Hawaii, lies a staircase to heaven that has captured the imagination of adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike for decades. The Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, is a legendary hiking trail that weaves through the breathtaking Ko'olau Mountain Range, offering a glimpse into a world where the sky meets the earth in perfect harmony.
A Staircase to Heaven
The Haiku Stairs consist of a staggering 3,922 steps that ascend to an elevation of approximately 2,800 feet above sea level. The stairway's origin dates back to World War II when it was constructed to provide access to a radio transmission station at the mountain's summit. Over time, this treacherous path has become an iconic hiking trail, drawing intrepid explorers from around the globe.
The Mystery of Access
One of the enduring mysteries surrounding the Haiku Stairs is its accessibility—or rather, its inaccessibility. The staircase was officially closed to the public in 1987 due to safety concerns and damage sustained during a hurricane. Despite the closure, brave hikers continue to risk trespassing for the chance to conquer this legendary ascent. The allure of the forbidden and the breathtaking views from the top make it an irresistible challenge.
A Glimpse of Paradise
Those who dare to venture up the Haiku Stairs are rewarded with unparalleled panoramic views of the island of Oahu. As you ascend, the lush, tropical landscape unfurls below you, with the Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon. The summit offers a surreal vantage point, where you can watch the sunrise paint the sky with hues of orange, pink, and gold, or witness the sun setting in a blaze of fiery glory.
Environmental Concerns
The controversy surrounding the Haiku Stairs doesn't just revolve around trespassing; it also involves the impact on the fragile ecosystem of the Ko'olau Mountain Range. Hikers trampling off the designated path can cause erosion and harm to the native flora and fauna. Conservationists and local authorities are striving to balance the preservation of this natural wonder with the desire to share its beauty with the world.
A Legal Alternative
For those who want to experience the majesty of the Haiku Stairs without breaking the law, there's good news. Efforts are underway to create a legal hiking trail that would provide access to this iconic location while minimizing the environmental impact. This alternative would allow visitors to safely explore the trail and appreciate the wonder of the Haiku Stairs without compromising the natural environment.
A Symbol of Resilience
The Haiku Stairs, with their stunning views and mystique, have become a symbol of resilience. Despite being closed and off-limits for many years, their magnetic pull persists. They remind us that nature's beauty and human determination can overcome even the most formidable obstacles.
Conclusion
The Haiku Stairs remain an enigmatic and alluring destination for those with a thirst for adventure and a reverence for the natural world. While the legal status and accessibility of the staircase may change in the future, its mystique will continue to beckon travelers, inviting them to uncover the secrets hidden within the folds of the Ko'olau Mountain Range.

Avoid the Crowds: Hidden Gems You Can Visit by Rental Car in Honolulu
Tumblr media
Honolulu is a popular destination for travelers worldwide, but the island of Oahu has much more to offer than its well-known spots like Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. If you're looking to escape the crowds and explore some lesser-known destinations, having a rental car is the best way to discover these hidden gems. With your own wheels, you’ll have the freedom to explore these unique and tranquil spots on your own schedule. Here are a few of the most beautiful, off-the-beaten-path locations you can easily reach with a car rental in Honolulu.
1. Kaena Point State Park
Kaena Point is located at the far western tip of Oahu and is one of the island’s most isolated and stunning nature reserves. Accessible by driving along Farrington Highway, Kaena Point is an ideal destination for those looking to hike, spot wildlife, or simply enjoy the quiet beauty of Hawaii. You won’t find large crowds here—just scenic views of the rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters. With a cheap car rental Honolulu, you can easily drive to the trailhead and spend a day immersing yourself in nature.
2. Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden
Located just a short drive from downtown Honolulu, Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden is a hidden gem that offers serenity and breathtaking views. The garden spans over 400 acres and is home to plants from tropical regions around the world. The scenic drive through the garden’s lush landscape is one of the highlights, and since it’s a bit off the usual tourist trail, you can enjoy peaceful walks and picnics without the crowds. If you’ve opted for the cheapest car rental Honolulu, this tranquil garden should be on your list.
3. Lanikai Pillbox Hike
While Lanikai Beach is relatively well-known, the nearby Lanikai Pillbox Hike is a hidden treasure offering some of the most stunning panoramic views of the island’s coastline. The trail, which leads to two WWII-era pillboxes, is short but steep and provides breathtaking views of Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands. Parking near the trailhead can be tricky, so arriving early with your rental car in Honolulu is recommended. The hike is well worth the effort, and you’ll find far fewer tourists than at some of Oahu’s more popular trails.
4. Kahana Bay Beach Park
If you’re looking for a quiet, secluded beach to relax without the crowds, Kahana Bay Beach Park on Oahu’s northeastern coast is the perfect spot. With its crescent-shaped bay and surrounding mountains, this beach feels like a hidden paradise. It’s a bit out of the way, but with a cheap car rental in Honolulu, you can easily make the scenic drive to this peaceful beach and spend the day swimming, sunbathing, or picnicking.
5. Byodo-In Temple
Tucked away in the Valley of the Temples on Oahu’s windward side, the Byodo-In Temple is a lesser-known but incredibly beautiful cultural site. This stunning Buddhist temple, surrounded by koi ponds and lush gardens, offers a tranquil escape from the busier parts of the island. With its peaceful atmosphere and striking architecture, the Byodo-In Temple is a must-visit destination. Having a rental car allows you to explore this serene spot at your own pace.
6. Tantalus Lookout
For breathtaking views of Honolulu and beyond, drive up to Tantalus Lookout at Puu Ualakaa State Park. Located just a short distance from the city, the winding road leading to the lookout is part of the adventure, offering glimpses of the city skyline and Diamond Head. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of downtown Honolulu, the coastline, and the surrounding mountains. Tantalus Lookout is often less crowded than other lookout points, making it a perfect stop for those with a car rental Honolulu.

Here are some things I've gotten to experience as a student living in Hawai'i!! 🌴
(Pictures from top left to right)
Makapu'u Tide Pools 💧
Located on the East Side of Oahu, the Makapu'u tide pools are a great spot to visit. You start by walking about half of the Makapu'u Lighthouse Trail, and at the second lookout, you hike down the mountain on a closed trail for about 15 to 20 minutes before reaching the lava rock tidepools.
North Shore (Turtles) 🐢
Any beach on the North Shore will most likely feature some turtles. I don't remember the name of this beach, but it was about a five-minute drive from Haleiwa Town. If you happen to spot a turtle, please stay 20 or more feet from it.
Hilton Lagoon 🎆
The Hilton Lagoon is a popular tourist spot, however, If you go on a Friday night at 7:45 p.m., you will get a front-row seat to the firework show. If you are feeling adventurous, don't be afraid to swim in the Lagoon for a better view.
North Shore 🏖️
This specific beach on the North Shore was secluded but not completely hidden. It had a perfect amount of shade and sun, with crystal clear water that wasn't choppy at all. You can find this beach at 66-167 Haleiwa Rd.
Mermaid Caves 🧜‍♀️
This spot is not for everyone. If you are claustrophobic or don't like too much adventure, I wouldn't recommend visiting this site. The Mermaid Caves are difficult to access, but so worth it. Located on the West Side of Oahu, the Mermaid caves are easy to walk to, just not so easy to get into. You can only access them during low-tide and you have to be able to lower your body down and lift it back up.
Lanikai Pillbox Hike ⛰️
If you're looking for a moderate, but gorgeous hike, this is one of the best on Oahu. I've done it twice and it is still beautiful each time. It's an easy hike that takes about one and a half hours. Once you get to the first Pillbox, you can stop there and enjoy the views of the East side, or you can keep going for another 10 minutes to reach the second Pillbox.
Queen's Beach 🛵
Yes, this one is basic. But, if you are a college student in Hawai'i, this is the easiest and closest beach to the University of Hawai'i Manoa and Chaminade University. There is free Moped parking and few tourists compared to the rest of the Waikiki beaches.

Discover the Charm of Pink Pillbox Hike: A Perfect Blend of Adventure and Scenic Beauty
If you’re a hiking enthusiast or simply someone looking to soak up some breathtaking views, the Pink Pillbox Hike is an adventure you won’t want to miss. Nestled in the lush landscapes of Oahu, Hawaii, this trail offers an exhilarating experience coupled with stunning vistas and a dash of historical intrigue. Whether you’re a seasoned trekker or a casual walker, the Pink Pillbox Hike has something to offer everyone.
What is the Pink Pillbox Hike?
The Pink Pillbox Hike is a popular trail located on the island of Oahu, near the town of Waianae. The hike is renowned for its vibrant, graffiti-adorned pillboxes, which were originally used as military observation posts during World War II. These iconic structures are painted in various shades of pink, making them a standout feature against the backdrop of the island’s natural beauty.
Trail Overview
Length and Difficulty: The Pink Pillbox Hike is relatively short, covering a distance of about 1.5 miles round trip. It typically takes around 1 to 2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the views. The trail is considered moderately difficult, with some steep sections and uneven terrain. While it may be challenging for beginners, it’s manageable for most hikers who are in decent physical shape.
Trailhead: The hike starts from the trailhead located on the side of the road on the way to the Waianae Coast. Parking is available along the roadside, but it’s important to be cautious and ensure your vehicle is parked legally. The trailhead is marked with a sign, and the path is fairly well-trodden, making it easy to follow.
What to Expect
Scenic Views: From the moment you start the hike, you’ll be treated to a feast for the eyes. The trail ascends steadily, offering panoramic views of the Waianae Coastline and the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, you can see the neighboring islands and the vast, open sea stretching to the horizon.
The Pillboxes: The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the pink pillboxes. As you climb, you’ll encounter these unique structures perched on the ridgeline. Their vibrant colors and historical significance make them a fascinating subject for photography. The pillboxes were once used as military lookout points, and now they offer some of the best vantage points on the island.
Flora and Fauna: The trail is surrounded by a diverse range of tropical flora, including vibrant flowers and lush greenery. Keep an eye out for native bird species and other wildlife that call this area home. The local ecosystem is rich and varied, adding to the overall charm of the hike.
Tips for a Great Hike
Wear Appropriate Gear: Given the trail’s steep and uneven sections, it’s important to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Lightweight and breathable clothing is also recommended, as the weather can be warm and sunny.
Bring Water and Snacks: Although the hike isn’t overly long, staying hydrated is crucial, especially in the Hawaiian heat. Bring plenty of water and some snacks to keep your energy levels up.
Respect the Environment: The Pink Pillbox Hike is located in a natural and sensitive environment. Make sure to follow the Leave No Trace principles — pack out everything you bring, stay on marked trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Timing is Everything: For the best experience, consider hiking in the early morning or late afternoon. This not only helps you avoid the midday heat but also provides a chance to witness stunning sunrises or sunsets from the pillboxes.
Check Weather Conditions: The weather in Hawaii can be unpredictable. It’s a good idea to check the forecast before heading out and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.
Concluding Thoughts
The Pink Pillbox Hike is a testament to Hawaii’s natural beauty and historical heritage. It combines the thrill of hiking with the joy of discovering unique historical landmarks and spectacular views. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a casual explorer, this trail promises an unforgettable experience. So, lace up your hiking boots, grab your camera, and set out to explore one of Oahu’s most captivating hikes. The Pink Pillbox Hike is more than just a trail — it’s a journey into the heart of Hawaii’s rich landscape and history.
