Note: So this was requested a while back by @jazzforthecaptain, sorry it took me so long to finish this little thing. I hope you like it 

Jack is so used to playing human shield that he forgets that he still has his mortal moments. Running with an angel reminds him of this. “Okay maybe following that Malk to an ice planet without thinking was a bad idea,” he says to Castiel trying not to shiver. 

It was supposed to be a simple adventure to collect a bounty and then a nice dinner at a bar Jack knew not far from the drop site. Now they were trapped in a cave, on an ice planet Jack couldn’t remember the name of and Jack was seriously close to dying of frostbite. 

Castiel gave his lover a concerned look. “This isn’t your fault,” he says dryly. Jack chuckles, the sound rough and low as he fights to keep himself warm. “I decided we should take the bounty, so yeah it kind of is,” he replies. 

The angel frowns and kneels down looking Jack over. After a moment, Castiel settles next to Jack and wraps his arms and by extension his wings around the immortal. “We will figure it out,” he says, his tone kind and gentle. “We always do.” 

Jack flashed the angel his most charming smile. “Cas if you wanted to cuddle me all you had to do was ask.” The answering laugh warmed Jack more than the arms currently wrapped around him.

Harkstiel AU where Jack meets Cas while Cas is working a case with the Winchesters. Sam and Dean left him alone for a bit while they discussed with the local sheriff or something, and they come back to him talking to another FBI agent.

After a misunderstanding, Cas starts delightedly discussing his life as an angel and Jack listens on with interest even if he doesnt believe what Cas is saying is true.

Sam and Dean start to pull Cas away but Jack smiles at him, asking how Jack is going to talk to him again. Cas just smiles and says a prayer always works before Jack convinces Cas to take his number.

..

And then later Sam, Dean, and Cas are in the Impala, but Cas is blushing and shifting about like crazy in the back seat, obviously uncomfortable, before pulling out his phone and dialing a number.

"Jack-- Jack, your prayers are becoming highly inappropriate...

"You want evidence? I, I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to discuss this sort of thing while the presence of other 'dudes'...

"No, I dont exactly mind, just-- not at this moment in time. Yes, Friday works for me"

one of my favorite stupid things to do in fanfic is to throw two characters together who literally never interact. and then give them an entire, fleshed-out relationship dynamic that exists nowhere but my own head. yes they’ve literally never spoken. yes their relationship is important to me. hope this helps.

I’ve had this silly little shrine in the works on Neocities for over a year and a half. Now that I finally have a working means of making my own graphics at home again, I was able to replace the way-too-professional rotating headers with something a little more... bespoke lol.

I just made myself laugh and cry by thinking about Jack Harkness stumbling across a post finale Sam Winchester going “oh so you’re the mortal my angel is in love with” and dragging Sam off on adventures with himself and Castiel and the boys being there when Sam dies of old age.

Imagine if Castiel visits his boyfriend, Jack Harkness, sometimes. Never any sort of schedule, no discussions, Cas just flies to visit him sometimes.

It had been a while since Cas had met Jack. Longer than usual-- even if they tended to go long periods without each other, they always see each other at least once in a couple months. That's when Castiel has his grace stolen. His grace is returned, but severely weakened, and his wings... Its already been almost three years since he's seen Jack.

Another year or two go by, the two never seeing each other.

Then Sam, Dean, and Cas work a case. One that's caught Jack's attention.

When Jack sees Cas again, he isnt sure how he feels. People come and go in his life all the time. They never stay. He's used to it. Cas was his constant, but he's already grieved the loss of his boyfriend. Seeing him here, alive and seemingly well... Jack's hurt. It comes off as anger.

Cas takes it willingly. The venom and coldness Jack gives him throughout the case.

But then Castiel is injured and cornered, and Jack is screaming at him to just fLY TELEPORT GET OUT OF THERE CAS!

When they're safe, Jack explodes. Why didnt you fly? Why did you just sit there? Do you not care if you get hurt? What is wrong with you? Have you become dependent on everyone saving your ass all the time?

And Cas just breaks. The Winchesters are right there, trying to get Jack to back off, but it doesnt matter to Cas. He's broken and he has no power he's helpless and so very alone. He tells Jack that he is fallen, his grace was stolen, his powers reduced to being virtually useless, and his wings...

Jack is shocked and afraid and ashamed. Doesnt know how to react. Your wings, are they... gone?

Castiel responds with no. But at this point, he wishes they were. He couldnt do anything. He had no idea where Jack had been-- he didnt have the mojo to sense him or walk into his dreams, and even if he did, he cant even fly.

Jack comforts Cas when he starts sobbing. Pulls Cas into his chest and rubs his back.

I'm so, so sorry...

For my harkstiel folks - give "TRUSTFALL" by P!nk a listen. I admit, my preferences for Captain Jack and Castiel run more towards songs that have a really strong marching/running beat. This isn't a quiet, reflective song. It's loud and full of big feelings. It was suggested by my fiancee, and when she suggests a song it means it cleared her Jack filter, and I trust her instincts there.

Harkstiel for me is always a negotiation of trust. It's two damaged hearts with authority issues, who've bucked unreliable leaders and still followed their own hubris into catastrophe. They don't believe in themselves anymore, and they love humanity for being the broken, violent, creative, affectionate, messy, untrustworthy megalomaniacs we are. They make moral compasses out of other people anyway, which is a mistake and they know it. And now they're here with each other, two terribly broken compasses. Equal parts fascination and irritation, threat and opportunity, pushing and pulling and inspiring and arguing each other into something that could be love, balanced like a feather on the finest wire of hell-forged trust.

They don't do relationships the easy way. They sweat and fight out the foundations one heavy stone at a time. It's hard to be a team when there's always someone being insubordinate, and they swap leads and fail and try and fail, until the failures start to look like something different, and that difference is theirs. But at some point, someone has to turn the key. Someone has to see if this craft made out of intimacy and broken glass is skyworthy. That moment is in this song, like all of my favorite harkstiel songs. It's the breathless moment of first contact, when all the shattered parts shudder into place. The hard work of becoming friends in spite of the labyrinth walls shifts and tumbles into a stunning freefall, and all the potential is visible, laid out like a sprawling sea of stars.

Toastystats: Crossovers, fusions, and crossover pairings on AO3

It’s my last fandom stats of 2020! The awesome @emergentomens won my stats in the FTH auction toward the beginning of the year (eons ago), and they gave me the fantastically fun prompt to look into crossovers on AO3.  I am now scooting in just under the 2020 wire with a whole bunch of breakdowns of common crossovers and fusions, as well as a few case studies of interesting crossovers in different fandoms (e.g. His Dark Materials, Good Omens, Untitled Goose Game).  Also crossover pairings, a look at animated crossovers, and more.  Happy New Year, @emergentomens​ !!
