like frankly even if the alphasmart and the alpha freewrite were offered at the same price point i’d recommend alphasmart > the freewrite because the freewrite is so unstable.

in a fictional world where the freewrite was reliable there’s a lot that comes down to preference — like how much do you care about a mechanical keyboard & wireless data transfer, does a touchscreen appeal to you, what screen size do you want — but imo this actually should not be the case. a brand-new modern device should be wiping the floor with something from 1992.

#the alphasmart ftr was a really expensive device at release #i think a lot of people cast it as an affordable device #and this is true NOW (although it is increasingly less true since they’ve been out of production for 19 years)#but that’s just bc they’re used — they were $$$ when first sold #HOWEVER i do kind of feel freewrite should be able to manufacture them more cheaply now fghjlhg #like the technology is no longer impressive #ANYWAY imo the alphasmart is way better if you edit on the go bc of the larger screen size #and also bc of the way it jumps between paragraphs #this specific thing is not a flaw of the freewrite bc they are specifically designed to discourage this #but like. its a consideration fgjkfh #u can’t really do proper edits on either device but you can easily go back and correct stuff on the alphasmart #especially if you have one of the touchscreen models #whereas this is possible but really painful on the freewrite
