I’m like 16k words into my next novel (working title This Edge of Midnight), super close to the end of Part 1! A few notes:

After I finished Waxed and Feathered I told myself I’d never do long chapters again because it was such a headache to edit and then immediately threw myself into another long-chaptered project 🫠 Ah well, at least it’s a LITTLE shorter—W&F’s Acts come out to like 25k words on average while I’m predicting closer to 20k max with TEOM. I think it’ll also just have a more reader-friendly structure in general, as once Part 2 begins it’s going to be broken up into short scenes with subheadings.

I found out ~10k words in that copyright for song lyrics is a fucking nightmare that makes no sense and works only to censor art and bring more money in for massive labels. Fuck copyright sincerely. Basically: Song titles and allusions to songs in a work of fiction are fine, song lyrics themselves are not. So for example, I can state in the story that Eris is listening to “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell and describe the song, but if I actually write out the lyrics record label Some Bizarre could hypothetically sue for copyright infringement. I’m at least grateful that I learned quickly so that I could pivot quickly. Nothing of too much value is lost at this point. I’d originally wanted to interweave lyrics to “Friday I’m In Love” into Part 1, but instead that just became the chapter title, lol.

On that note, I do want to ask Chris Connelly personally for his blessing to use “This Edge of Midnight” as a book title. As previously stated I do not need copyright permission to use a song title so this would be purely out of respect, not necessity. I don’t want to do this just yet though, as I’m still so early into the first draft of this project. Gonna wait until it’s actually gearing up to be published—hopefully it won’t take 7 years again 😭 Also speaking of that, happy birthday Chris!! 🥳🎉

I’m also really excited to finally be at a point where I’m introducing more of my characters into the story! So far we have my protagonist Mickie, who’s a mixed rivethead witch in her early 20s. She’s very withdrawn and avoidant, she uses magic to kinda deflect from dealing with her own emotions (like “hmm I’m feeling weird maybe a tarot reading will tell me why” ykwim lol). Her boyfriend Zeph is this grungy post punk guy who plays guitar and works at an animal shelter. Their mutual best friend is a bisexual dancer named Jasmine who’s this very 90s Switchblade Symphony type goth girl, really sweet and bubbly but objectively more put together than Mickie or Zeph. And we JUST met Chauce who’s this laidback punky tguy drug dealer and Foxy who’s a pretentious vampire goth event promoter. Pretty soon we meet Eris, the gay former frontman of Mickie’s favorite electroindustrial band that broke up 5 years ago and has since become washed up and strung out, and Genie and Star, a white hippie couple who pride themselves on selling ethical drugs and love gentrification. It’s a really fun cast of characters and I’m really excited for everyone to see them brought to life!! :D

Thematic Headcanons

hc + ✂️ for a hair-themed headcanon

Eris: Really doesn't care about style when it comes to their hair, and usually just chops at it until it's out of his face

Ophelia: If there's one routine she's good at sticking with, it's taking care of her hair - she's had the same routine to take care of her curls since she was a kid. The only time she misses wash day is when she's too injured/exhausted to get out of bed.

Jasper: Hasn't been to a salon in years - all it takes is electric clippers and some cheap box-dye and they're set.

hc + 🎉 for a celebration-themed headcanon

Eris: Actually really enjoys introducing Rick (and sometimes other members of the Squad) to some of the holidays he used to celebrate. It's one of the rare times people will see her genuinely excited and happy in a non-battle setting.

Ophelia: Stopped celebrating her birthday when she got to college (it just got sad, when she didn't have anyone to celebrate with), and sometimes got so busy that she completely missed her own birthday because there was nothing that separated it from the other days.

Jasper: Is the type to be super into Halloween - always has a killer costume when they have time to prepare it, and usually goes to a viewing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show with Kyle and/or a couple friends.

Eris: Rarely sleeps while out on missions - they'll stay awake through the night and act as a sentry against threats, while the human members of their party rest

Ophelia: Tends to do some of her best work between 10 PM and midnight

Jasper: Because they grew up out by the swamps, they struggle to sleep without the ambient sound of frogs and crickets and other nighttime creatures. The white noise from the city is still better than total silence, but it's not the same.

hc + 📿 for a faith-themed headcanon

Eris: Claims not to believe in any sort of higher power, but Rick has caught them mumbling to themself in an ancient language when they're caught in a particularly dangerous situation. He's not sure whether it's Greek or something even older than that, but it sure sounds like a prayer.

Ophelia: Tends to subscribe to a more modern view of Judaism (doesn't observe the Shabbat bc her life revolves too heavily around technology, and doesn't believe tattoos should count as "self-mutilation"), but never wavered in celebrating the high holidays even during the darker periods of her life. If anything, that resolve in her faith helped her feel a little less lonely, though she wouldn't admit that openly.

Jasper: Is agnostic, and that's largely due to their empathic sense - they don't believe strongly in any god or organized religion, but sometimes the question pops up as to why they have that empathic sense, and they don't really have an explanation for that.

hc + 💼 for a job-themed headcanon

Eris: Actually has quite a lot of artisan skills that they've developed over the centuries, and sometimes uses that to raise a bit of money in a pinch, but tends to get bored with doing that for more than a few weeks to months at a time.

Ophelia: There's really nothing that could waver her from engineering, and there never was. She dove into it during high school, knew exactly where she wanted to study, worked hard in college, and never once wavered. It's a good thing that worked out for her, because she did not have a backup plan.

Jasper: Money was about the only thing keeping them from becoming a doctor or surgeon - they knew they wanted to go into medicine, but chose nursing because they couldn't afford the time or financial commitment of becoming an M.D. with residency

OH, ALWAYS!!!! there’s the chrysijacks agonies i’ve mentioned prior (jacks finding her dead body and getting his curse from her 🥰, jacks getting soooo fucking possessed and trying to kill chrysi over it, chrysi taking jacks’s place in the card and he has to deal with the guilt of his immortality making him cruel to his very bestest friend), BUT i always have new and improved agonies that await <333 like how i think that ummm since jacks has chrysi’s blood in him, if she were to die, his blood would start blooming w death flowers.

oh, but the fic where jacks is the human and chrysi’s the fate is so uniquely agonizing… jst bc like!!!! jacks went and killed himself (partway bc of his obsession w chrysi overtaking him, partway bc eris influenced him and killed him off bc she didn’t want chrysi to fall in love and become mortal again. long story, but she essentially also killed azure so that chrysi would become her “greatest achievement” and become a fate), but he still lingers around chrysi bc he continues to love her in his death. ((chrysi ends up getting eris to preserve his body… once a trophy husband, always a trophy husband, i guess.. jacks is somewhat touched by this gesture. there’s something very wrong with both of them)) AND THEN when chrysi loses her mind over the knowledge that she’s lost the two ppl she loves most bc of eris (her goddamn mother figure!) and she starts killing ppl indiscriminately bc of it… jacks possesses fate!jacks and kills chrysi to save her from herself…. it’s jst. so sad. then fate!jacks is left w his own fucking body taxidermied and chrysi’s dead body in his arms. how the hell is he supposed to handle this? and when he gets back to his actual world, how’s he going to look his chrysi in the eye? but you know. the agonies are sooo fun!!!

oh my god, chryzurejacks being cat ppl all at the same time is an amazing idea… i will post art of them like this later today, i think! but i think that it’s a lot of azure lounging aroudn and napping and reading books, while chrysi definitely gets hyper at times and takes a lap around the house <33 jacks will tend to curl up w chrysi, but whenever she wants to play or run around, he’s extremely displeased,,, why doesn’t she jst want to be with him ?? :(( it’s worse bc she’ll run around, and then once she settles down again, she GOES TO LAY DOWN IN AZURE’S LAP.
