Dominant Djokovic eases through to Australian Open final (VIDEO)

The Serbian star remains on course for a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam title
History beckons once again for Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic after he emphatically defeated American Tommy Paul on Friday to qualify for yet another Australian Open final. Djokovic will meet Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday’s clash in pursuit of what would be a tenth title Down Under, with a win also drawing him level with Spanish rival Rafael Nadal in the all-time Grand Slam stakes, with 22 wins. Australian Open specialist Djokovic roared out of the blocks in the first set, storming to a 5-1 lead before a brief discussion with the umpire over the use of towels appeared to stifle his momentum, and led to his serve being broken twice to quickly level the scores at 5-5. That was as good as it got for the American. Paul claimed a 30-0 lead on his next service game, only for Djokovic to click back into gear and storm into the lead – taking the first set 7-5.

From there, it was business as usual for the Serb – who recorded his 27th successive win at the Australian Open, breaking a record held by Andre Agassi. Djokovic, who has never lost a final at the Australian Open, forged a path to another when he took the second set 6-1 and again met little resistance in the third to take the set – and the match – with a score of 6-2 in a little over 2 hours and 20 minutes on court. “I have strong memories of 15 years ago, but I wouldn’t have imagined things to have turned out like they have. I’m so blessed and grateful, marvelling and cherishing every moment,” Djokovic said afterwards. “[My level is] great, it’s perfect. It’s 110%,” he added, apparently not feeling the effects of a hamstring injury which had been troubling him earlier in the tournament. “Stefanos, see you in two days!

“Of course, you’re not as fresh as in the beginning, but we put in a lot of hours throughout the offseason into fitness to be in a good enough condition to play best of five. “I know what’s expected of me. Experience helps, but on court, moment to moment, it’s a great battle with yourself and your opponent. You can feel the long rallies; we both had heavy legs. I held my nerves at the end of the first set; that was a key moment where I started swinging through the ball more.” Djokovic’s advancement to the final comes a year on from his contentious deportation from Australia following a vaccination row with Australian immigration officials. He was initially suspended from entering Australia for a period of three years, though this penalty was rescinded in November. The Djokovic family was the subject of more off-the-court drama this week, however, after Novak’s father Srdjan Djokovic declined to attend his son’s semifinal match after he was pictured in the company of supporters flying the Russian tricolor following Djokovic’s Wednesday win against Russia’s Andrey Rublev. Displaying the Russian flag was banned by Tennis Australia officials earlier in the tournament.

Weeks since protests began, determined Kenyans continue going out to voice their frustrations with the government. But when demonstrators first took to the streets in June to rally against proposed tax hikes, it was not only President William Ruto and members of parliament who came under fire. In the protests that later turned deadly, placards were raised denouncing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, which were accused of causing the crisis. “IMF, World Bank, Stop the Modern Day Slavery,” one placard read. Across the capital, Nairobi, graffiti denouncing the organisations is visible even as protesters continue to demand Ruto resign. So what is the IMF’s role in the current crisis, and what are Kenyans now demanding from the organisation? What did the IMF do? For years, multilateral lenders, especially the IMF, have had bad reputations in African countries for providing loans to desperate countries based on stringent conditions that critics said have always disproportionately affected the poor. African leaders, including Ruto, have also criticised international lenders for what they said are disproportionately high interest rates compared with other developing countries. In Kenya, that anger is fresh because Ruto’s now-withdrawn tax hikes as well as similar legislation passed in 2023 are both linked to IMF loans as Kenya staggers under the weight of a heavy debt crisis. While some of the complaints against the IMF are true, African leaders are often to blame, Dumebi Oluwole, an economist with the data intelligence start-up Stears, told Al Jazeera. The higher interest rates, she said, are often because of records of default. The stringent conditions from lenders like the IMF have also been applied to distressed countries elsewhere, like Greece, which went through an economic crisis in 2009 and was partly bailed out by the lender, but African leaders often rely on options that hurt the majority, she said. “African leaders are the sellouts,” she said. “We all know that IMF loans come with conditions, but some leaders, when asked to raise revenue, will choose taxation rather than cut costs. Then they’ll blame the IMF. Someone can only dangle crumbs in your face when you don’t know how to cook.”

The beginning of the end for migrants in Ireland or how the whole Europe could be consumed by hatred towards foreign refugees.
Riots erupted in Dublin on Thursday night after three children were injured by a migrant in a knife attack near the center of the Irish capital. A five-year-old girl suffered serious injuries in the incident.
The brutal attack provoked right-wing forces in the city to carry out pogroms in the capital and hunt for refugees from the Middle East and Africa. The protesters destroyed several shops on O’Connel Street as well as a building of the Holiday Inn Express hotel (because information appeared on social networks that asylum seekers were being housed there). They chanted anti-immigrants slogans, destroyed a number of vehicles and clashed with the police on the streets of the city.
The situation clearly demonstrates the mood in society regarding migrants. One message on social media about the possible involvement of refugees in an attack on children near a school was the last straw for a certain group of people who are tired of immigrants and who are unhappy with their government’s policies towards foreigners seeking refuge in Ireland.
The current problem is a consequence of the refusal to revise the Dublin Agreement by the Council of Europe regarding the issue of the distribution of refugees from the Middle East and Africa. In this regard, countries such as Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal and others suffered the most from the problems caused by migration. These are the countries in which refugees most often cross the EU border for the first time. Accordingly, it is there that these refugees apply for asylum. It is Europe’s attempt to buy off migrant hosts Italy, Greece and Spain in recent years that has contributed to creating tension in European society and negative perceptions of visitors. It is no secret that the European Union allocates considerable funds for the acceptance and accommodation of each new migrant, which are redistributed by the host EU country to numerous funds and refugee reception centers. But, the problem is that provision for refugees comes from the taxes of EU citizens and every member of our European society wants to their help to be reciprocated. Each of us expects that the refugees who receive our assistance will try to integrate into our society, follow our laws and rules and work with us and earn an honest living. But the reality turned out to be different…
Unfortunately, not all migrants are ready to integrate into European society. Most of them prefer to live on benefits provided by European states or looking for easy ways to make quick and criminal money. Currently, approximately 25-30% of crimes in the European Union are committed by migrants. Rape, robbery, murder, drug trafficking – these are the types of crimes most common among immigrants from the Middle East and the African continent. And here are some examples of crimes similar to the situation in Ireland. In December 2022, in Germany, a migrant attacked two schoolgirls, aged thirteen and fourteen, with a knife as they were heading to school. One of this girls died in a hospital from her injures. In June 2023, in France, a Syrian refugee attacked with a knife a group of children and an adult person. All seven people, including children, were injured. This list could go on and on…
Naturally, this way of life for visitors does not inspire local residents. The number of protests and rallies criticizing the open door policy pursued by most EU countries-members continues to grow. Consequently, the influence of various right-wing forces is growing, which has not been the case for a very long time in the countries of Western Europe. Recent examples can serve as confirmation of this. In Italy, Hungary, Slovakia and even the Netherlands, the initiative is passing to right-wing forces, which are beginning to quickly gain popularity due to populism. We will be able to see where this will lead us in the next 5 years.

World: The West Isn't Buying Into China's Year of Diplomacy
Tumblr media

Western nations increasingly see China as an interventionist power that is not improving global security, according to recent polling, as Beijing struggles to square its desired peacemaker image with the political realities of its expanding global influence.
The Pew Research Center conducted a 30,000-person survey across 24 nations between February and May and found that people living in European, North American and Indo-Pacific democracies are particularly wary of China's influence. The sentiment was less strong, though still present, among African and South American respondents.
A median of 71 percent of the 30,000 people polled felt that China does not contribute either much or at all to international peace and stability, versus 23 percent who felt China does. Americans (80 percent), Dutch (86 percent), British (80 percent), Germans (80 percent), and French (75 percent) were among those who felt most strongly that Beijing is a negative influence on global affairs.
Democratic Indo-Pacific nations emphatically agreed, with 87 percent of South Koreans, 85 percent of Australians, and 85 percent of Japanese feeling the same.
The list of nations—the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland and South Africa, and Australia—is dominated by Western liberal democracies, with inherent ideological tensions likely somewhat explaining the negative views of Chinese foreign influence.
But only in Indonesia, Kenya and Nigeria did a majority of respondents say Beijing contributes either a fair amount or a great deal to international peace and stability.
Newsweek reached out to the Chinese Foreign Ministry via email for comment.
China—already considered by many an economic and technological superpower—is still shaping its military and diplomatic clout abroad. Major decades-long investment in the former is openly intended to eventually challenge American hegemony, but on the diplomatic battlefield, Beijing is following a less publicly combative path.
Among the salient diplomatic issues that have helped shape global opinions of China this year are one striking success and one ongoing failure.
The former was the landmark Iran-Saudi Arabia normalization deal signed in April, in which China unexpectedly brokered a détente few thought likely given the deep and historic animosity between the Middle East's power players.
But China's unconvincing neutrality regarding Russia's war on Ukraine has somewhat eroded global trust in Beijing, particularly among the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific nations rallying to Kyiv's cause. China's de facto backing for Russia has undermined its continued calls for peace and the anemic peace plan it proposed in March.
North vs. South
Larger issues involving China—among them the fate of Taiwan, the situation in the South China Sea, lingering frustrations about the pandemic, the brewing showdown with the U.S., human rights, and concerns about political interference—have "completely dwarfed" Beijing's diplomatic efforts, Andrew Small, a senior transatlantic fellow at the German Marshall Fund, told Newsweek.
"Publics have evidently not seen either the Saudi-Iranian deal as particularly significant or the Chinese efforts on Ukraine as particularly credible," Small said.
Small noted Beijing will not necessarily be too concerned with continued Western skepticism.
"In one sense, the argument for what China has been trying to do on Ukraine and in some of these other efforts was positioning in the 'Global South,'" he said. "The view on their side had been that no one in Europe is going to take this seriously, but they are able to position themselves through this in the Global South as an actor that approaches these issues in a neutral way."
Tumblr media

But the poll's findings also suggest that Beijing's self-framing might not be playing out as it hoped. A median of 57 percent of those surveyed said they felt China interferes in other countries affairs either a fair amount or a great deal.
The sentiment was most notable in Europe, where a majority of national respondents excluding Hungarians agreed, as well as in North America. A majority of all those in Indo-Pacific nations apart from Indonesia saw Beijing as interventionist.
Even in the four of the six African and South American nations surveyed a majority said China intervened at least somewhat in other countries' affairs. Fifty percent of South Africans and 46 percent of Argentinians also agreed.
"It's such a mantra in Chinese foreign policy, so foundational in the way that they frame things that this is not what they do, and it is the antithesis of the Western approach," Small said.
Against this backdrop, Small added, it is "striking" to see so many nations feeling that China is indeed intervening abroad. The data suggests, he said, that the perception of Chinese anti-interventionism is being "shredded."
Recent months have seen a renewed China-U.S. effort to thaw chilly bilateral relations. In June, Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited Beijing to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. And earlier this week, Blinken told CNN the U.S. wants to "put some stability into the relationship."
But the long-term disputes show no signs of easing. While visiting Tonga this week, Blinken hit out at what he called China's "increasingly problematic behavior" in the Indo-Pacific.
In Europe too, major nations are increasingly concerned about Chinese espionage and influence, even if leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz are still courting investment.
Worsening Euro-Atlantic ties with Beijing, Small said, might accelerate a brewing confrontation.
"To a certain extent, this will validate an analysis on the Chinese side that starts to write off the West," he said, and instead focus on a "winnable" public opinion battle in the developing world.

Srdjan Djokovic opted to not attend his son‘s Australian Open semifinal win on Friday
Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has sprung to the defense of his father Srdjan after he was filmed alongside Russian supporters following a match involving his son at the Australian Open this week. Video footage appeared online shortly after Wednesday’s match between Djokovic and Russia’s Andrey Rublev. It showed Srdjan Djokovic alongside a man holding the Russian tricolor and wearing a ‘Z’ symbol on his shirt, which is commonly associated with Russian troops in Ukraine. Subtitles on the video suggested that Srdjan Djokovic made a pro-Russian statement in the brief clip. A ban on displaying the Russian flag was introduced by Tennis Australia earlier in the tournament. However, Srdjan Djokovic later issued a statement to say that he had been unwittingly caught up in a pro-Russia demonstration as he celebrated and posed for photographs with his son’s supporters in Melbourne. He added that he would stay away from Djokovic’s semifinal match with American Tommy Paul, which took place earlier on Friday.
Scandal has erupted at the Australian Open with nine-time champion Novak Djokovic’s dad seen posing with pro-war demonstrators. pic.twitter.com/VO9oSGNlqE— Yasmina (@yasminalombaert) January 27, 2023
A phrase used by Djokovic Sr in the footage was translated as professing support for Russia’s military operation in Ukraine. However, Serbian media later clarified that his words were actually a common way of saying goodbye. Following his win against Paul, which will see Novak Djokovic appear in the tenth Australian Open final of his career, the Serb admitted that the furore involving his father had affected him during the match. “It was unfortunate that the misinterpretation of what happened has escalated to such a high level. There was a lot of conversations with the tournament director, with media and everyone else,” said Djokovic in his post-match press conference. “It has got to me, of course, as well. I was not aware of it until last night. Then, of course, I was not pleased to see that.” Djokovic roared into an early lead in his match with Paul, only to uncharacteristically appear to lose momentum late in the first set, offering his opponent a route back into the match. He ultimately rallied, though, and saw the win through in a three-set whitewash. With the potential semifinal pitfall successfully navigated, Djokovic turned his attention to the Russian supporters who he said had “misused” his father, as well as the media who mistranslated his father’s comments.
Witness the calmness and serenity with which Djokovic deals with yet another pesky reporter asking a provocative question. This time about his Dad. Not only is Novak GOAT on the tennis court he is also a GOAT in dealing with the media. #AustralianOpen pic.twitter.com/KIZkAoEIjM— दिविर जैन (@divirj04) January 27, 2023
“The photo that he made, he was passing through. I heard what he said in the video. He said, ‘Cheers.’ Unfortunately, some of the media has interpreted that in a really wrong way. “There was a lot of Serbian flags around. That’s what he thought. He thought he was making a photo with somebody from Serbia. “He was misused in this situation by this group of people,” he added. “I can’t be angry with him or upset because I can say it was not his fault. He went out to celebrate with my fans, and that’s it. “After that, of course he felt bad because of me and he knew how that’s going to reflect on me.” Djokovic also said he was unsure whether his father would attend Sunday’s final where he will take on Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in pursuit of a tenth Australian Open title, a record-equalling 22nd Grand Slam win and a 28th consecutive victory overall at the Melbourne event.
