World: Archaeologists in Turkey have Identified Massive Structures Below a Roman-Era Castle

Diyarbakir Province, Turkey 🇹🇷 — As part of what was once ancient Mesopotamia, Turkey has long been fertile ground for archaeologists. It's home to significant sites that even predate Mesopotamia — UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Gobekli Tepe, a Neolithic settlement believed to be more than 10,000 years old with what may be the world's oldest place of worship, and Catalhoyuk, a proto-city dating back some 9,000 years.

Now, more recent sites in the country's southeast are yielding finds that archaeologists say may change modern understanding of this part of the world's past, moving the footprint of pre-Roman activity in the area farther east than was previously believed.

Zerzevan Castle, the site of a Roman Empire military garrison, is providing what UNESCO calls "important information about the Roman soldiers, civilians' daily lives and the battles."

And then there's the Mithras Temple. The Mithras religion — also known as the "Mithras cult" — is believed to have originated in ancient Persia, and the temple, discovered in 2017, is possibly the best-preserved such temple in the world, says UNESCO.

Yet to be excavated are huge, multistory structures that archaeologists have identified thanks to ground-penetrating radar scans. These remain below ground and are revealing layer upon layer of artifacts, some dating back well into pre-Roman history.

Sitting near an ancient church built on a hill high above the temple, Archaeologist Aytac Coskun says the first time he saw the place, he knew he had to excavate.

"I first came to Diyarbakir in 2005," says Coskun, "and when I saw this hill, I saw some pieces of artifacts, and I knew no excavation had been done before. So as soon as I saw it, I knew it had to be a dig because there must be something significant underneath."

Underground Residential Areas May Have Sheltered 10,000 People in Wartime

A tour of the site reveals some what he and his team have excavated in recent years — a sprawling rock altar, an underground church, a water canal stretching for at least several miles.

Coskun and his team have unearthed objects including a beautifully preserved and ornately decorated Roman-era bronze baptismal bucket and an Assyrian-era stamp, a kind of official seal carved into rock, that could date back some 3,000 years.

"The digging we're doing inside the castle walls is 57,000 square meters [68,171 square yards]," he says. "It's a huge area. And outside of it...is (something) like 10 million square meters [3.86 square miles]."

Coskun believes some 1,500 people, both military and civilian, lived here during times of peace. In wartime, he says, it's likely that some 10,000 people from the surrounding area came here to seek shelter.

That, he says, may help explain the expansive underground living areas. So far, he says they've excavated six residential complexes inside the castle walls, and there are 99 more still below the surface.

That's just one reason Coskun says this site has the potential to change modern understanding of this part of the world and its archaeological and architectural history.

"It's totally open to new discoveries, that's for sure," he says. "We don't know what else we'll find. We've only dug around 10% of the area on the surface within the castle walls. And beyond the castle walls," he adds, "you see more living areas, the canal, a necropolis where the leading families buried their dead, and ceremonial areas. So, there will be more to come."

Excavations, he says, could continue for another 30 years.

The scene where Akif confesses everything to Omer was not real. Akif didn't do it because he thought Omer would kill him and then go to jail. So Akif wrote a letter instead and gave it to Tolga. He told him to give it to Omer after he dies and to not read it. Tolga put the letter in his jacket's pocket. Sureya told Akif that he was not sick and that Nebehat lied to him so he called Tolga to get the letter back but the letter ended up under a couch at the Eren's house. Oglucan wore Tolga's jacket and went to his house and dropped the letter there.

The girl who kissed Berk is the daughter of Gokhan's friend. She studies at Attaman school, and she has a scholarship. Berk and Gokhan met her at school when Gokhan dropped Berk off in his new car. Gokhan introduced them to each other and told Berk to take care of her. Berk looked uncomfortable tbh. After class, Berk was sitting at the cafeteria with Aybike. He was checking his answers for the math test. He turns to Aybike and tells her that he is going to get a good grade on this test and she tells him "good job" and then she looks at him with heart eyes:

The girl came to ask Berk about some study notes and he told her that he will give them to her later. She thanked him and touched his shoulder. Aybike didn’t like that. I love it when Aybike tries to hide her jealousy. I can almost hear her screaming inside but she is trying to look calm on the outside 😂

Aybike:”Who was that? She touched your shoulder and was acting friendly”

Berk:”I think she touched my shoulder without a specific reason and not because she wanted to allude to something. Besides, she is the daughter of my dad’s friend. Her name is Gokce. My dad told me to take care of her, to help her”

Aybike:”Gokce?”

Berk:”Yes, Gokce”

Aybike:”Gokce is pretty”

Berk:”I don’t know. Is she?”

Aybike:”Is she pretty?”

She was testing him 😂😂

Berk:”I mean I didn’t look at her in that way”

Aybike:”Good job! I will gouge out your eyes if you do.”

Berk:”No, I can’t allow that! How am I going to look into your beautiful eyes after that? I hope you’re not going to take that away from me.”

Aybike:”Right now, you are very romantic and god damn it I love it so much”

Berk smiled

Aybike:”so you have to praise me a little bit”

Berk:”I will praise you my love, I will praise you. But praising you takes hours and lasts for days, The school day ends and we will go home late”

Aybike:”It’s okay! Praise me, always praise, don’t be too friendly with that girl and keep on praising me”

Berk:”Okay. Don’t be too friendly and praise you, praise you all the time. My jealous girlfriend”

And then Berk kissed her hand.

Aybike scoffed:”Jealous?”

Berk:”You’re not?”

Aybike:”I am not”

Berk:”You’re not, you’re right! My dear girlfriend, you’re never jealous, never.”

Aybike and Berk were on their way back to class and they were holding hands. Gokce was waiting for Berk by the lockers. She told him that she wants to borrow his notes now. Berk gave her the notes and she thanked him then kissed him. Berk was caught off guard and so was Aybike. Aybike looked so pissed and Berk looked terrified. The silence after the girl left was so funny 😂 

Aybike:” what was that?”

Berk:”I swear, I also don’t know what that was, my love. The girl hugged me and kissed me”

Aybike:”You should’ve pushed her! You should’ve told her: don’t hug me, don’t kiss me”

Berk:”Not to that extent, my love. In the end, she is the daughter of my dad’s friend”

Aybike:”Oh that’s great! Let our dad’s friend’s daughter kiss and hug our boyfriend, is that what you mean?”

Berk:”That’s not what I meant, my love”

Then Tolga came and asked them if everything was alright. She told him that everything was okay because girls were hugging and kissing her boyfriend in front of her. Then she left and Tolga told Berk that he was done for and that he should do what he did with Yasmin. He should write something on a shirt and wear it and Berk said nope.

The next day, Berk was sitting in the cafeteria and Gokce came to see him again. She told him that she didn’t understand his study notes because of his handwriting and that they should look at them together after school. Aybike saw her and came running to where Berk was sitting and heard everything, Aybike told her that her notes are better and her handwriting is perfect so she would understand them. Then she told her that she missed her boyfriend and she wants to spend some time with him. Before leaving, the girl touched Berk’s shoulder again and Aybike got pissed.

Berk:”My love?”

Aybike:”My love?”

Berk:”So because you didn’t see me for the last 5 min, you missed me, right? I didn't hear it wrong, right?”

Aybike:”You didn't hear it wrong. I missed you so much! ”

Berk:”So you weren’t trying to annoy Gokce, is that right , my love?”

Aybike:”I wasn’t trying to annoy Gokce, my love”

Berk:”Does it make sense for you to try that? And you weren’t jealous?”

Aybike:”No”

Berk:”Does it make sense that my girlfriend is jealous?”

Aybike shakes her head

Berk:”Aybike, you’re lying while looking into my eyes. You flew like an eagle from there and approached us slowly. You annoyed the girl and made her leave. On top of that you lied. Your handwriting is worse than mine, Aybike”

Aybike:”Am I wrong? She has been running after you for the last two days. What was it(her pretext)? A love for literature. She was glued to you! What’s with this friendliness! Enough! Look, I don’t want you to be close to that extent! The girl’s hand does not stay still!”

Berk:”You’re right!”

Aybike:”She touches you, kisses you, hugs you. She is always touching you”

Berk:”You’re right, my love. You’re right. Dad told me to help the poor girl. What should I do? I am trying to help her. Besides, don’t you know me? Do my eyes see anyone else beside you?”

Aybike:”They don’t?”

Berk:”They don’t”

Aybike loved that response

Berk:”What should I do? Tell me my love, what should I do? Should I buy a tshirt like Tolga and wear it? With “Don’t touch, don’t hug, don’t kiss, don’t get close” on it, huh?”

Aybike:”Great idea!”

Berk:”Great idea!”

Aybike:”I was joking. Writing things on a tshirt and what not, that’s ridiculous. I am going to buy some tea, do you want some? ”

Berk:”No I already got a cup of tea”

Aybike got up and cleared her throat:”Dear students of Attaman school! Look! This is my boyfriend! Don't touch him! Don't hug him! and avoid all unnecessary contact, okay? Look, if you're one of his acquaintances or the daughters of his dad's friends or the daughter of his nanny and what not, I don't care! Don't touch him! I don't want that!”

Berk:”Can we clap for her”

Berk clapped and told her that he was joking.

Aybike ordered some chamomile tea and she told the waiter that she needed it immediately 😂 Poor Aybike! Watching another girl touch her boyfriend made her so pissed she needed something to calm her down. I am honestly impressed that she hasn't hit Gokce yet.

After school, Aybike went to see Ayla. Aybike told Ayla that she likes her new home. Ayla told her that it took her some time to get used to it. I think Ayla is starting to get used to the “poor lifestyle” which is good because I don’t think she is coming back to her old house anytime soon. Aybike told Ayla that after she came to see her at school she talked to Berk. She told her that Berk listened to her and he talked about his father concerning his construction company and they went to see a property the “company” was working on and he even showed Berk the property's deed. Ayla did not understand what Gokhan did and how he managed to convince Berk. Just a reminder that Gokhan faked the whole thing so the deed must’ve been fake too and our naive Berk of course did not notice that which is not exactly his fault since he is only 19-20 years old and not a lawyer or someone who understands how this works. Aybike told Ayla that she believes her. She told her that Gokhan threatened her. Ayla was shocked and asked Aybike if she told Berk about it. Aybike told her that she couldn’t tell him because it was unbelievable. Ayla told her that she was right and that Berk might not believe her. Ayla told her that Gokhan messed with her job and now she doesn’t know what to do. Aybike asked her what they should do and Ayla told her not to do anything because Gokhan was unpredictable and she didn’t want Aybike to be in danger because of him (which means there is a high possibility that he will do something to Aybike) and that she will find a way to deal with him. Then, Ayla said that she forgot to bring some cake and asked Aybike if she likes some and Aybike said that she does. Ayla thanked Aybike for coming to see her:”Thank you, Aybike. You’re so sweet and so nice. It’s a good thing you came to see me. Thank you.” Aybike didn’t say anything back to her but she was smiling the whole time. It was nice to see Ayla and Aybike have these kinds of scenes especially after Sengul died. Aybike still misses her mother and things have been chaotic at home so Ayla showing her love and calling her “Kizim” made her so happy 🥺  

Berk was having dinner with his dad when Gokce showed up at the restaurant. She said that she was there to meet a friend but they didn’t show up so Gokhan asked her to join them. Berk was not okay with this but he couldn’t say anything. The girl went to the bathroom and Aybike called Berk. He changed her name to “tatlimmmmm”. Berk got so nervous when he saw that Aybike was calling him. 

Aybike:”What are you doing? I called you because I missed you so I wanted to hear your voice. There is nothing going on (in case he gets worried). Are you at home?”

Berk:”You did great! I am not at home, I am outside, having dinner”

Aybike:”With who? Are you alone?”

Berk:”With who? I am with….. ”

Berk panicked and didn’t know what to say. Gokhan told him to tell her that he was with him.

Aybike:”Hello? Berk are you there?”

Berk:”I am here, I am here. I am with my dad. Just me and him, we’re having dinner. Right now, we’re eating, can I call you later?”

Aybike said that she is okay with that and Berk told her that he will call her later. Berk said that he lied to Aybike for nothing and his dad told him that it was a small lie and that if he told her that there was a girl with them then that would create a problem. Berk told his dad that Aybike is jealous because of Gokce and his dad told him that he expected that, that’s why he told him to lie. Then, Gokhan acted like he couldn’t find his phone and asked Berk if he left it in the car so Berk went to check and that’s when Gokce got back to their table. So it turns out that Gokhan hired this girl to break Ayber up. He was paying her with Berk’s money of course. Gokce was not the daughter of his friend, that was also a lie. He saw her when he was working as a janitor at the school and he knows that she is studying with a scholarship and that her dad works at a construction site so she was in need of money. Gokhan was doing all of this because Aybike told Berk to check how his company was doing. He didn’t like that she got involved in his business and endangered his plans. Gokhan told Gokce to go to Aybike tomorrow and tell her that she had dinner with Berk tonight. Gokce told him that Aybike will be pissed at her and that at school she was looking at her like she was going to hit her. This girl is scared of Aybike 😂 Gokhan told her that he was doing this to piss her off anyway. Gokhan told her that once he gets hung up on someone, he doesn’t back down whcih is not a good sign for Aybike. This means that if Gokca doesn't break Ayber up, he is going to move on to another plan, probably a dangerous one. Berk came back and he looked so uncomfortable. 

I liked the development Ayber had in this episode and I hope Berk's father is leaving soon. I don't think Gokce will be staying long. She will probably be around for another 2-3 episodes. I think it's time that Berk discovers his dad's true face.
