Lesson 050: The Unforgiven

Genesis 50:15-17 - When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “Perhaps Joseph will hate us, and may actually repay us for all the evil which we did to him.”  So they sent messengers to Joseph, saying, “Before your father died he commanded, saying, ‘Thus you shall say to Joseph: “I beg you, please forgive the trespass of your brothers and their sin; for they did evil to you.” ’ Now, please, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of your father.” And Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

Why did Joseph’s brothers tell such a story to Joseph after their father died?  Weren’t they all at peace with each other at this point?

Let’s read together Genesis 27:41-42 and Genesis 42:21-22.

Joseph’s brothers were still wracked with guilt for how they treated Joseph, selling him into slavery, and lying to their father about everything.  They were afraid Joseph was only being kind to them for the sake of their father.  Now that Jacob was dead, they were afraid Joseph would finally take revenge upon them.

Why did Joseph weep when he heard their story?

Let’s read together Genesis 45:3-8 and John 11:25, 32-37.

Perhaps Joseph cried because he realized his brothers still didn’t think of him as one of them.  Perhaps Joseph cried because their story brought back memories of past trauma.  Perhaps he cried because he had already forgiven them, but they did not believe his words.

Let’s read together Genesis 50:18-21; Matthew 6:15; Matthew 18:35; Mark 11:25; and Romans 3:23.

Joseph did not want servants - he wanted brothers and family.  Joseph once again freely forgave his brothers.  He reassured them he would not retaliate against them for the wrongs they had committed against him in the past.

Why does God ask us to forgive those who sinned against us?  We all have sinned against God, yet He is willing to forgive us when we confess our sins and repent.  In the same way, we must follow Jesus Christ’s example in forgiveness.

I bought Aziraphale's Bible so you don't have to.

Am I insane? Yes. Was it worth it? Maybe. In most* of both season 1 and season 2 of GO, there's a very specific Bible on a bookstand next to Aziraphale's desk. It's a vintage illustrated plate book by Harold Copping, known as the Harold Copping Bible, published by the religious tract society in London in 1910. It features some of the most well known Old Testament stories, summarized and annotated by the Bishop of Durham at the time, and illustrated by Copping, who was freshly returned from a sojourn in the middle east. Ironically, It was meant as a lay-person's version of a comic book, short, exciting by use of exotic illustrations, and easy to read.

For one, this layout with the thin grid around the text, as well as the paragraph symbol next to the first title, indicate that this would have been a printer's proof copy, not a finished book. It shows you the layout grid and can be annotated for changes. Second, there seems to be a war going on between fonts. Where the "chapter" of Job begins, we get a font and a style similar to the original bible, which gets rudely interrupted by a dropped capital (from the real book) and a Gothic-style font/verse numbers like in the original King James version of the printed Bible.

Line Upon Line Lesson 017: Circumcision

Genesis 17:10-11 - This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

Circumcision?  Wasn’t there a dispute in the New Testament church about circumcision?

Let’s read together Acts 15:1-29.

There was a group of people in the New Testament church that wanted new Gentile converts to be circumcised and to keep all the Old Testament laws and statutes.  Other people in the church argued against this.  The disagreement got to the point where the church convened a council to decide this issue.  They ruled against circumcision for new converts.

Let’s read together 1 Corinthians 7:19; Galatians 5:6-11; Galatians 6:15; and Ephesians 2:11-13.

Paul the Apostle argued that keeping God’s ten commandments was more important than circumcision.  He  said faith working through love was greater than circumcision.  Paul declared it was better to be a new creation in Christ than to be circumcised.  Paul believed that the uncircumcised (the Gentiles)  can be brought to God only through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Let’s read together Exodus 4:24-26; Exodus 12:44, 48; Leviticus 12:2-3; and Joshua 5:2-7.

Why does it seem the Old Testament placed a great importance on circumcision?  On male children were to be circumcised on the eighth day.  Even non-Israelite servants and strangers who dwelt among the children of Israel were to be circumcised.  All the children of Israel had to be circumcised before entering the Promised Land.

Let’s read together Detueronomy 10:16, 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4; and Jeremiah 9:24-26.  

The Bible makes it clear in the Old Testament that circumcision does not save you.  Circumcision was intended to be an outward sign of the covenant between God and Abraham.  The descendents of Abraham performed the ritual of circumcision as a reminder of that covenant.  If anything, God was (and is) more interested in people circumcising their carnal nature and the hardness of their hearts, so they could fully follow Him.

Let’s read together Philippians 3:2-3 and Colossians 3:11.

Paul contrasts those who demand circumcision as a sign of salvation (the mutilation) versus those who accept salvation through Jesus Christ only (the [“true”] circumcision).  People were perverting the sign of circumcision into something it was never intended for.  This is why the New Testament church went away from the practice of circumcision.

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Reading List/Completionist Guide

Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress of Prime Earth. She has existed as a character since 1989, and has appeared in her own series as well as multiple other series throughout the years. Most well known for being a Bird of Prey, she has a long history that tends to be hard to track. Instead of hunting down all of the issues, this guide has every one of her appearances in the attempt to follow her chronologically, but where her movements couldn’t be followed the natural passing of time was used to follow the story.
