SMASH OR PASS ESPADA EDITION BIATCH (respectfully) ❤️
You're on!
Coyote Starrk
SMASH. Have you seen him? He's gorgeous! Also he's the number one Espada, so y'know. The power. Also I like his voice and he has a surprisingly sad backstory for a 'villain' character.
Barragan Luisenbarn
Him old and not in a hot dilf-y way. Pass.
Tier Halibel
Smash! She's gorgeous and dignified, and she's probably the least likely to accidentally (or purposefully) kill you.
Ulquiorra Cifer SMASH SMASH SMASH. C'MON FUCK ME, EMO BOY! Ugh. He's so rude and cold, and his character development is so good. Those pretty green eyes and the smooth voice. He's so fine.
Nnoitra Gilga
Pass. He's scary. I WILL say, though, I do think Nnoitra is a really well-written villain. He perfectly encapsulates what it means to be a Hollow, especially in his backstory with Nelliel and fight with Kenpachi. I do kind of hope Kubo brings him back for the Hell Arc like he did with Syazel.
Grimmjow Jeagerjaquez
LIGHT OF MY LIFE. FIRE OF MY LOINS. DO YOU KNOW HOW DOWN BAD I AM FOR THIS MAN? I literally started watching Bleach just for him. I was on a Naruto forum one day and somebody had a fanart of Grimmjow as their signature. I was like, "WHO is that fine man???" and the rest is history. I've loved him since like 2006 and he's the origins on my Junichi Suwabe fixation and one of my major villainfucker influences. Icon. Everything about him is so fucking cool, the god-tier design, the voice, the fights. Wow.
Anyways, Smash. <3
Zommari Leroux
Pass. His design is cool but then his fight with Byakuya immediately yeeted any cred he had out the window. Also he had barely enough screentime to leave any lasting impression. Szayel Aporro Granz
I can never spell this fucker's name. Anyway, Pass. Again, his character design isn't bad but the flamboyant evil nerd thing is off-putting to me. He kind of reminds me of one of those villain Pokemon team admins you fight midway through the game.
Aaroneiro Arrururie
Pass. The only time this man jar thing is hot is when he's wearing Kaein Shiba's face. And same with the Zommari issue, you never get a sense of who he is as a character because his screentime is so limited. (Another character's surname I had to google because I forgot it.) Also he lost to Rukia.
Yammy
Ew. Pass. -
Since the Espada are so hilariously divisive (half look like greek gods and the other are straight-up abominations), I'll include the ex-Espada for fun.
Luppi Atenor Pass. I'm sure the extremely androgynous look is someone's thing, but personally I like my male characters a bit more rugged. Also his personality was kind of lame and his fight with the lieutenants was nothing to write home about. Nelliel Oderschwank
PASS. I could write a literal essay on how much I dislike her, but in the interest of brevity I'll say this - her design is fantastic but that's all she's got going for her. The bitch has two personalities and both of them suck, hyperactive toddler or condescending and holier-than-thou.
Dordonii Soccacio Pass. He's so forgettable I had to google what his last name is. I don't think his design is bad but I don't really remember him except Ichigo whooped his ass and then he got drooled on by Nel.
Cirucci Sanderwicci
Smash! Goth chick solidarity ftw. It's a shame such an amazing design was given to a minor character because I love it, she's easily as pretty as Halibel but unfortunately since she had one fight and got stomped by Ishida I think the fandom forgets her. Also I like her name, it's that classic Kubo balance of being goofy but kinda cool.
Gantenbainne Mosqueda
Pass. It says something about how forgettable you are as a character when Kubo didn't even bring him back as a Mayuri zombie, instead Charlotte got revived just for being popular. (L for all Barragan's other fraccion.)

Retsu Unohana (卯ノ花 烈, Unohana Retsu), formerly known as Yachiru Unohana (卯ノ花 八千流, Unohana Yachiru), aka my wife, was the former captain of the Fourth Division in the Gotei 13. She was one of the oldest and most experienced captains, and was Soul Society's best healer, as well as the first person to wield the name "Kenpachi".[3] Her lieutenant was Isane Kotetsu. She also formerly served as the Captain of the 11th Division. After she was cast into Hell, Unohana gained the epithet of "Death Sword" (死剣, Shiken).[4]
Unohana has the appearance of a slender and very youthful woman with blue eyes and black hair. She wears the standard Shinigami captain uniform apart from using an obi instead of the normal sash, which hides her well-endowed bosom. Her hair is long and is always worn as a large braid down the front of her body. Over 100 years ago, she did not have the large braid, instead styling in front of her as a loose ponytail. While maintaining a kind and gentle look at most times, during her battle with Kenpachi Zaraki, her eyes appear gloomy and menacing. She also wears her hair down for the first time and is revealed to have been covering a notable scar in-between her collarbone, inflicted by Kenpachi when the latter was young.[5] Until some time after she fought Yhwach, she did not tie her hair in front of her, instead wearing it down at all times.[1][6]
Unlike most Shinigami who carry their Zanpakutō in their sash, Unohana has a large string attached to the sheath of her Zanpakutō and carries it over her shoulder, or has her lieutenant, Isane Kotetsu, carry it for her whenever they are together on the battlefield.[7]
Unohana has a gentle and warm personality that augments her appearance. Unohana is a soft-spoken, polite, and caring woman who uses honorifics when addressing everyone, including her subordinates and the enemy. She rarely shows any signs of panic or distress, and has a great sense of duty, shown in the times that she orders Hanatarō Yamada’s imprisonment and Isane Kotetsu’s chasing of Renji Abarai when he runs away with Rukia Kuchiki. Despite her sense of duty, she will also heal almost anybody around her, including Renji after he was defeated by his captain, Gantenbainne Mosqueda when she arrived in Hueco Mundo, and the Visored, referring to them as allies despite Shinji Hirako's reluctance to do so. With her grace and kind manners, she lets others know quietly that while she may be soft, she is not to be taken lightly. Despite her gentle nature, several members of the Eleventh Division[8] and even her fellow Captains fear her.[9]
However, after the revelation of her past as the first Kenpachi and Shunsui Kyōraku calling on her to draw on her experience from then, Unohana's personality reverts to her original violent and bloodthirsty nature; once she meets with Kenpachi Zaraki, she comments how the scar left on her chest was causing her pain just from the sound of his voice.[10] Unohana herself says that she is infatuated with crossing blades,[11] and firmly believes in taking any actions necessary — even sleight of hands such as hidden daggers — to get ahead in battle.[12][13]
Unohana likes strong-flavored food, preferring it to bland tasting dishes. In her free time, she climbs mountains throughout Rukongai; during these excursions, she collects medicinal herbs. Once a month, she holds an ikebana class for the members of her division[14] and she is also the President of the Ikebana Club.

Jin, while standing over two unconscious Arrancar here in Las Noches-- the bull masked Rudbornn Chelute and the Privaron Espada Gantenbainne Mosqueda-- looks in the recently arrived Momo's direction and shrugs his shoulders. Smoothly, and almost affably-- if not for his undeniable air of menace-- a smirking Jin then says,
"I'll tell you the same thing I told them, I'm not here as an enemy, don't make one of me, please."
Jin, after eying Momo more closely, then adds, in a way that suggested he knew her, despite this being the first time they had crossed paths, "but I don't think you will make the same mistake; you're far smarter than they are, Hinamori Momo, far smarter than most Arrancar, and most of your former Shinigami friends while we're at it."

Tumblr media
HITSUGAYA TŌSHIRŌ was standing right next to her , face obscured in the shadows of the throne . Chill in the air filled his sister's nostrils , as if to request permission to engage .
His sister simply waved her hand .
❝ You're not making any demands of me , ❞ she observed , resting her cheek on the back of her hand , ❝ You do well . [ ... ] HOWEVER … I don't believe we've met ; and yet , you speak as if you've known me for a long time . ❞
Tumblr media
Though fully aware of the DANGER this man posed [ for facing the Privaron Espada and Captain of the Exequias , in battle , meant certain death for most ] , Momo did not raise her voice . The little time she'd spent in Las Noches , thus far , taught her better than that . Recklessness would only get her killed , here , in the lion's den .   ❝ Your compliments are wasted on me , I'm afraid … if it is LORD AIZEN , that you seek . ❞

Chad’s explained to us a couple of times that his right arm is “of the Giant”, representing the spirit of his grandfather Oscar Joaquin de la Rose, who was a pretty big guy physically and morally speaking, and would have seemed even more so to Chad as a child, when he taught him not to use his fists for evil.
So what might the arm named for the Devil represent?

BLEACH - Resurrección
We aren’t done!  There are more Espada and Espada adjacent Arrancar left...
Tumblr media
Gamuza is actually the Spanish name for the animal called the Chamois, which is a species of goat-antelope.  They are part of the taxonomical family Bovidae, sub-family Caprinae, which is where the Viz translation’s choice of the word Capricorn came from.  The kanji read  羚:“Antelope” and 騎士:“Samurai” but this is also the word use for “Knight” when referring to European knights, and frankly ought to just be translated as “Cavalier;” it’s a compound of  騎 for “Equestrian”/“Horseman” and 士 which also means “Samurai” or just “Warrior.”  So the word very literally means “Horseriding Warrior.”  So, problem with “Capricorn Knight” as a name is that, for one, the term Capricorn refers to the astrological and mythological sea-goat, not just goats in general; and also that “knight,” while technically accurate, is largely insufficient for the title here.  Chamois Cavalier sounds a bit silly but is frankly the more straight forward while also holistic translation available, but something to the effect of “Antelope-back Knight,” or “Goat-mounted Knight,” or "Goat-antelope Cavalier” would work as well.
Her release call is  謳え:“utae” as in, “to praise” or “to extol” or “to declare” or “insist upon.”  Viz went with “Praise” and I’ve seen other translations use “Declare,” both of which feel much clunkier in English than in Japanese.  In the proper context it can actually mean, specifically, “Sing (the praises of)” which is actually a pretty nice bridge between “Declare” and just “Praise.”  To me the command evokes almost like the entrance fanfare of a competing knight in a jousting tournament; trumpets “sing” and the knight on horseback appears.
Tumblr media
Trepadora is the Spanish name for the category of plants (generally ivy) called “Creepers,” “Climbers” or “Ramblers.”  The kanji 蔦:“Ivy” and 嬢 denoting an “Unmarried young woman” but generally translated as “Miss”/”Lass”/“Girl.”  (It is the word Shoujo, as in the manga demographic for ages 13-18)  Viz translated this as “Ivy Maiden” which is pretty accurate.
His release call is  縊れ:“kubire” meaning, “Strangle!” which is what Viz used.
Tumblr media
This is a fun mix and match one.  Giralda is the Spanish word for a “Weathervane” or “Weathercock;” The elements being evoked here are something that turns rapidly back and forth in strong wind.  Dordoni’s kick-based fighting style, and Giralda’s large beak-like bone structures at the end of the galestorms seem to evoke a cock-fight rooster, although other elements of his bone mask and armor seem to lean into his Mephistophelian, diabolique aesthetic.
The kanji read 暴風:“Storm” and 男爵:“Baron,” which means Viz actually did this one exactly right.
His release call is 旋れ:“Maware” meaning “Turn,” “Revolve,” “Swirl,” or “Whirl” the latter of which was the translation Viz went with.
Tumblr media
Golondrina is the Spanish name for the “Swallow,” as in the bird.  The kanji reads  車輪:“(Car/Wagon) Wheel,” 鉄:“Iron” and 燕:“Swallow,” again like the bird.  Viz went with “Iron Wheel Swallow” but that’s a little misleading; Technically it’s right if read as “Iron Wheel-Swallow” but “Iron-Wheel Swallow” kind of misses the emphasis on the “Swallow’s” own “Iron” quality.  Not that that really matters all that much in the bottom line.
Her release call is 掻っ切れ:“Kakkire” meaning “Cut” or “Slit” or “Slash.”  For some reason Viz translated this one as “Rip“ which isn’t quite the same action.  If it had meant “Rip” like a rip chord it actually would’ve been pretty appropriate, but the Japanese would be “Rip“ or “Scrape” (It’s actually shares a root word in Mayuri’s release call for Ashisougi Jizo, “Kakkimushire.”) so it’s talking about the kind of slashing or slitting open motion that’s being used here to convey how a spinning blade wold cut something open.
Tumblr media
This is a bizarre one...  Dragra isn’t a word.  And no matter how I try to parse the katakana :“Do-ra-gu-ra” I can’t make heads or tails of it... (Doragura, Dragura, Dragra, Doragra, Dragula, Dragla, Dolagura, Dolagula, Dolagra,etc...)  It’s just not any kind of a word in Spanish.  The kanji read 龍:“Dragon” and 拳:“Fist;” this would seem to strongly suggest that the first half of Doragura should definitely be “Drag-” like Dragon, which helps cut the possible interpretations about in half, but still nothing turns up.
Gantenbainne actually doesn’t have a release call that we ever see for his Resurreccion.  He just appears out of a cloud of dust and debris already released while fighting Chad.  It’s kind of weird how much Kubo let kind of slip up with this set of designs, because even though Gantenbainne was definitely the most minor of the three Privaron Espada, his actual fight wasn’t just glossed over, it actually got a fair bit of attention and hype, it’s just that it was all focused on Chad.  Still, odd that Kubo really phoned this one in more than others.
I’ve got more of these Resurreccion posts btw: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Ok so remember how I spend way too much time thinking about the Arrancars' Zanpakutou?
Well it's been bugging me for a while that all of the (canon) Arrancars' swords have names in both Spanish and Japanese (e.g., Ulquiorra's Murciélago means "bat" in Spanish and "black winged great demon" in Japanese), with exactly one exception.
Gantenbainne Mosqueda.
In Japanese, his Zanpakutou's name means "dragon fist". But as far as I can tell, "Dragra" isn't a Spanish word, nor is it a word in any other Romance language that I could find.
So, being very bored and having some free time while I was doing my laundry, I decided to see if I could find which language, if any, the word came from.
As it turns out, up in northern India resides the Gaddi tribe. It was incredibly difficult to find much about them, but I did find a book about them by Omacanda Hāṇḍā, which, whilst describing a Gaddi dwelling. states the following:
"Each floor has a cantilevered veranda, about one metre wide, running in front. This veranda is known as dragra or behi."
So... that's probably a coincidence, given that the Gaddi language is - according to a census from 2011 - only spoken by 181,000 people. But it is interesting.
I dunno if this means anything to anyone, but I'd kinda like to know what other people think, especially people who know more about this than I do. Thoughts?
