TFSP Translation Progress Update: Shark Nasch's Lines
get it Nasch's Lines/Nazca Lines er anyway
ding Shark's all done! After finishing up Yuma's last two stories (I'd done his first two as I was prepping my announcement video for this whole thing), I just wrapped up re-translating Shark's story events in TFSP, and it's kinda neat how Yuma's gets you to this bit from his POV while Shark's story events get you here from his POV after he comes to terms with his past memories (so the "it's been ages" line was in both stories, just a little differently lol; these are from his last event). And while I wish they'd coded in Nasch (and the other Barians' Barian forms) so he could turn into him in these bits, to the game's credit, Shark's sprite early into his story has him without his Barian necklace, but he gets it once he starts accepting that he's Nasch.
I've already worked on Shark's in-duel dialogue from my work on that video, so I'll be giving those a once-over next and then working fresh on his bio, which I thought I'd already done. That'll then do it for this go-around of TFSP work as I jump back into GX and finalize my subs for episodes 122 and 123; I'll likely put up a little video of some of Shark's story translation and in-duel lines once done, so stay tuned!

I might not be that impressed with F-Zero 99's gameplay ( I don't think it's bad, the whole 99 person battle royale thing is just not for me, I don't like playing with people who aren't next to me on a couch )
But i'll tell you one thing, the actual menus in the game are some of the coolest looking menus I've ever seen in a Nintendo game, holy shit, the colors, that comic book artwork ripped right of the manual for the SNES game, they could have easily made it a lot more plain, and much like all their other retro homages, they could have used nothing but pixelized sprites, but no, the fact that they used 2D art is so important to me.
I really hope that if we get another F-Zero game, it has a similar aesthetic to it's home menu. Hell, If there's a story mode, I hope it's 2D animated instead of that awkward 3D shit they did in GX.

More Questions Answered
The game has pretty nice OST, And art at least from what i've seen and heard off of Opera GX, Did you do all this yourself or did you get some help?
Thank you! Assets at this point are very much a combination of my original graphics and sound, royalty-free resources, some artwork done by my wife, and assets commissioned for the game. I am trying to get out of the habit of calling this a solo project, because the truth is I can't really do all of it myself. I'm focusing on content over polish, so writing a somewhat cohesive narrative from start to finish is the focus. I have and will continue to hire freelance help for sprite work, portraits, etc., but that all currently comes out-of-pocket.
With the time SU has taken to release and stuff, will the game, Will it ever be launched on a different platform? Like Itch.io or Steam or even Epic games, maybe different platforms if you'd like (i don't think rpgmaker games can be ported, probably would have to rewrite the whole code in a language like C# or something)
One of my sneaky little tricks comes from a closeness to the classic RPG Maker community: this isn't actually an RPG Maker project anymore. I do try to closely emulate the RPG Maker 2003 style, mostly out of nostalgia, but the game is written in Gamemaker so porting is relatively painless. Confirmed platforms are currently PC (Steam, itch, anywhere I can get) and Nintendo Switch.
What hurdles did you come across that made you restart the development of the game?
The first is primarily technical. RPG Maker 2003 (at the time) couldn't natively export to non-windows platforms. Even on windows support felt waning. I remember the game would crash if I had two GPUs running and the game did this awful anti-aliasing on windows 7. Everything felt dated. (Aside, easyrpg fixes a lot of this! But I feel this ship has already sailed...)
The second is graphical. Starless Umbra started in 2002 before indie games were even a thing. It was common practice to rip assets from other RPGs. And while that did teach me about palette usage, effective map creation, and pixel art overall, the result is the product started to feel like a mixtape of some of my favorite game assets, of varying degrees of quality. Few of which I could call my own.
The final reason is the writing. I started the game as a child, and though I did my best to revise the story as I matured, revisions on the story began to take its toll on the narrative. Interest in the story came mostly through a mystery I was explaining to players that I myself hadn't quite figured out. Overall, there's a lot of cringy moments in these older iterations of the game, but in those moments they felt very genuine to me. It wasn't until I took a step back and approached the narrative from the top-down did I at least have some semblance of a roadmap for a story I wanted to tell.
Is there something that you've been unable to do that still sucks to do/hard to do for the game?
The writing is still difficult for me. Typically, what I plan for an act goes through a series of revisions, some even requiring multiple rewrites if the story doesn't meet the desired pacing or tone. I try to minimize this, but often it takes a lot of trial-and-error.
Striking a balance in the combat system between something that feels like a JRPG, isn't boring, and doesn't require twitchy/quick reactions like most action games is also challenging. People come into the game with certain preconceived notions, eg., "I don't want this enemy to hit me", but in reality by moving away from it and not attacking you're letting its abilities recharge. Trading damage is okay because as long as you survive the encounter your health is replenished. Allowing players to understand that and make combat engaging has been difficult.
How long would you say till SU launches as a whole game?
I'm notoriously bad at giving estimates. (Heroes of Umbra's initial estimate was 6-12 months: it took almost 6 years!) At the pace I'm going without any help it'll be another 3-5 years, but I hope I can trim that down. This is primarily because the game is a hobby project. I also have a full-time job, a two-year-old daughter, and generally try to follow some semblance of a fitness regimen to keep me busy otherwise.

About Tag Force Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force
Yu-Gi-Oh! Tag Force is a series of video games for the PSP and PS Vita, featuring a player controlled character (default name KONAMI) as they adventure through various storylines by pairing up with a cast of different Yu-Gi-Oh! characters; often for a sequence of tag duels. These scenarios are frequently referred to as “Heart Events” as each one is unlocked by filling a heart that represents the player’s relationship with their potential tag partner. These hearts are filled by giving gifts, or by simply dueling the character in question.
Most (but not all) Heart Events are based on actual events from the anime but are usually altered slightly to allow for a tag duel involving the player and their current partner. Some however, have you dueling your partner one on one or dueling someone on your partners behalf. All Heart Events involve dueling in some form though (save for in the first Tag Force game and its port called Beginning of Destiny), and further progress with that partner cannot be made until each duel is won.
All games will begin you with at least one starter deck, and normally cards can only be obtained by expending DP (Duel Points, which act’s as a form of currency) at the game’s card shop. -Unless of course, you transfer data forwards from one Tag Force game to another, utilize card codes/card rentals, or otherwise earn them in certain events. You can also earn Deck Recipes from the game’s characters, in addition to making your own.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force/Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Beginning of Destiny
Being the first game of the series, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force and its PS2 port called Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Begining of Desitny are naturally the most different from the other games. They’re divided into three segments which make up the game’s story: the first being where the player transfers to Duel Academy and spends several months dueling for DP to buy cards, completing Heart Events to gain Tag Partners, going to classes, exploring the island, and participating in events such as the Duel Festival and the Interschool Duel between Central Academy and North Academy. The second segment is about the player and their selected Tag Partner earning Medals in a Tag Tournament taking place on the island. The third and final segment of the game focuses on the battle against the Shadow Riders (such as in the anime). Completing all three will allow you to start the game over from any of the three segments and allow you to unlock any previously unaquired content. Naturally, this also means you can re-experience story events as well.
Tag partners are divided into three tiers: 1st (main characters such as Jaden, Syrus, Alexis, Chazz, Zane, Chumley, and Bastion), 2nd (minor and one off characters like Jinzo, the Shadow Riders, the Paradox Brothers, Dark Magician Girl, Dorothy, and so forth), and 3rd (game original characters which make up the rest of the student body, some teachers, and a few guest characters). First tier characters are the only ones who have Heart Events, eight in total. Second tier characters will merely require that you preform a specific task before agreeing to be your tag partner. And third tier characters will immediately agree when you ask, though you can only ask after beating the game at least once.
Duels feature the use of cinematics, mostly consisting of the character’s intro animation, win animation, lose animation, and action animations - which are characters playing cards, announcing their turns and etc. When certain characters play specific cards (such as Jaden playing Elemental HERO Electrum), animations of those cards are used to show them being summoned and attacking.
These two games cover the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and have all of the cards released up until Tag Force’s release date, although there are a few anime exclusive cards that can be played, such as the Maiden in Love.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 2 and Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3
Starting with Tag Force 2, the game’s story mechanic takes a greater focus on Heart Events and no longer has the multi part system used in Tag Force/Begining of Destiny. In the first game, there was a total of eight Heart Events per character, and only a handful of characters even had them. Now that roster has expanded and there are only four Heart Events per character, though you CAN unlock alternate versions of certain characters (such as Normal Jaden and Fused Jaden) to expand your interactions, though some alternate versions are plainly non-canon to the other story lines (such as Excited Bastion in Tag Force 3, who is something of a parody to Jaden).
On that note, with the removal of a linear story the Tag Force series, the plot becomes less concrete starting with Tag Force 2. For example, in Tag Force 4, partnering with Kallen will have the player character as (or having been a member of) the Enforcers - even though Jack, Yusei, and Crow’s primary Heart Events will have them meeting the player character for the first time.
Tag Force 2 covers the second season of the anime as well as the first half of the third, thus a large roster of characters and cards are added in addition to the ones available in the first game/Beginning of Destiny. Further are added in Tag Force 3, which covers the last half of the third season as well as the fourth only seen in Japan. It is important to note however, that Tag Force 3’s English version was only released in Europe, so people outside Europe should expect to have to order it online if they wish to buy it.
Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Tag Force 4, Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Tag Force 5, and Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds Tag Force 6
Starting with Tag Force 4 and ending with Tag Force 6, the series’s focus shifts to the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds anime. The gameplay stays much the same from Tag Force 2 and 3, though the game’s visual style does change somewhat. Firstly, the player character’s design changes slightly to match the new setting (since you’re now playing as a Turbo Duelist instead of a Duel Academy student). Second, certain aesthetics of the game interface are altered, like menus and such. Third, the angled overhead view used in the first three games during exploration is now changed to a more two dimensional one, but also allows for larger and more detailed character sprites in exchange. And fourth, Tag Force 4 begins the tradition of better characterizing game original characters, giving them better hand drawn models, more distinct personalities, and some minor significance in a few Heart Events.
Tag Force 4 covers the first two seasons of the anime, Tag Force 5 covers the third, and Tag Force 6 covers the fourth. Each one improves upon the last in terms of gameplay as others have previously (more and better cinematics, more cards to use, etc.), however it is worth mentioning that there is no Turbo Dueling mechanics in these games, or any of the ones to follow it. -In certain situations characters may treat their duels as a Turbo Duel, but actual gameplay continues to be based on real life rules to avoid complicating things or confusing players.
Much like Tag Force 3, Tag Force 6 wasn’t released in America, but it wasn’t released in Europe either. There also aren’t any complete fan translations, so information about the story and Heart Events is very scarce.
Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special
Tag Force Special, is as its name implies, is somewhat unique from all of the pervious games. Most specifically, this is the only of the Tag Force games (so far) to cover the first five Yu-Gi-Oh! arcs, and include all of the cards introduced up until the end of ARC-V’s first fifty episodes. A drawback to this however, is that Heart Events are allotted more selectively so that an equal amount of characters from the different animes can have coverage. For example, all of the Signers have unique Heart Events still, but other 5Ds characters do not.
Other important changes in this game are that the card animations have been fully taken out as well as the game’s map exploration aspects. Now, players are presented with five different overworld displays based on each arc’s setting where they then choose to duel with characters that are dotted across these displays as miniaturized versions of themselves. These changes were likely implemented to keep the game’s data at a manageable size (having more characters and cards than any other Yu-Gi-Oh! game before it), and were based on design choices used in Yu-Gi-Oh! World Duel Carnival.
In the original Yu-Gi-Oh! arc Konami is portrayed as a Domino High Student, while in the ARC-V arc he appears to be an AWOL member of Duel Academy living in Miami City.
Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL World Duel Carnival
While not technically a Tag Force game at all, World Duel Carnival’s player character is meant to be the same one from the Tag Force games. Brooke Walker and Mr. Heartland will both actually reference some of the events of the first six games specifically in relation to the player character, and while other characters won’t say anything as specific, some do refer to him as “a legendary duelist” thus implying some of the same things. In addition to this, the NPC’s used in this game, as well as it’s overworld map, would later be implemented into Tag Force Special - further solidifying the connection between this game and the Tag Force series.
In World Duel Carnival, players have access to the game’s entire bank of cards from the very beginning, in addition to the deck recipes, card sleeves, and duel mat - thus allowing for the full array of gameplay options from the moment you start. In addition to that, there are actually multiple story modes to play through, where you play as not only your own character but some of the anime’s as well. When playing as an anime character the goal is to collect nine heart pieces, thus giving you three complete hearts to enter the final tournament of the World Duel Carnival. Every third heart piece advances the actual story, as do the three matches of the tournament. When they’re all finished you’ll unlock a new anime character to play as. Completing three stories will then allow you to use your player character in story mode, which is handled slightly differently.
As with the others, the goal of the player character’s story is to collect heart pieces and enter the Wolrd Duel Carnival’s tournament. However, instead of collecting nine pieces to have three full hearts, your aim is to collect sixty two pieces in order to complete ONE heart. Furthermore, each duel for a heart piece will advance the story and you can gather them all in any order of your choosing. Once you do, you then enter the tournament and compete in a series of three duels against Shark, Kite, and ZEXAL to have your wish granted.

How Pokemon Cards Are MadeHow Pokemon Cards Are Madevideo games

How Pokemon Cards Are MadeHow Pokemon Cards Are Madevideo games
Creatures, Inc. is an often-overlooked arm of the Pokemon machine. The developer has worked on spin-off Pokemon games for years, starting with Pokemon Stadium in 1998 and most recently Detective Pikachu–as well as 3D Pokemon models for various games, including Super Smash Bros. But the company is also responsible for much of the Pokemon Trading Card Game, which consistently sees new series and expansions after over 20 years.
We recently had a chance to tour Creatures Inc.’s Tokyo, Japan office to learn about the process of creating Pokemon cards. During our tour, we spoke to Atsushi Nagashima, game director for the TCG, and Mitsuhiro Arita, a longtime freelance illustrator responsible for over 500 Pokemon cards–including the infamous holographic Charizard card–about how cards are conceived and then illustrated. We also talked to Satoru Inoue, the test room lead at Creatures, about how cards are playtested and how balance problems and broken cards are addressed by the team.
There are three main parts to making a new Pokemon card: coming up with the idea for the card, commissioning art, and testing the card with the current TCG rules. This involves a team of game designers, over 70 artists, and 19 playtesters working full time to create and execute new card series and expansions.
Step One: Pick A Pokemon
According to Nagashima, the most important thing when coming up with a new set of cards is variety. There needs to be a mix of art styles and types of cards; some need to have strong competitive potential, while others need to be appealing to collectors. But the first step to creating a new set is deciding which Pokemon to use.
“Near the beginning of a new series [based on the latest video games], we really try to take care to stay true to the video games that we’re basing the card series on–for example, the Pokemon that were featured heavily in that video game or had a big role in the story, we’ll make sure they’re kind of at the center of the set we’re making,” Nagashima said. “But once we’re kind of mid-way through the series, we start focusing more on play environment overall…and decide which Pokemon to put in based on that.”
A lot of those choices come down to what the game needs to feel more balanced and what Pokemon suit those needs, Nagashima said. But the team also considers which Pokemon don’t get a lot of love in the games or anime, the ones kids might find cool, or even Pokemon they themselves like.
“One of my favorites is Darkrai, and I think you’ll notice that there’s a lot of strong Darkrai cards,” he said, laughing.
Nagashima at the Creatures office.
There are also background stories and themes for each expansion, though that’s not really communicated to players. “In the [XY Breakthrough expansion], the theme we had for that was two parallel worlds. They both featured Mewtwo, so there was a Mewtwo that was in this advanced world…and there was a Mewtwo that was more old-fashioned,” Nagashima explained. “These two parallel worlds collide and then the world goes into chaos and is destroyed as a result of that.”
According to Nagashima, one of the team’s biggest challenges is maintaining the spirit of certain characters and Pokemon while putting their own spin on things. Because the card game is closely tied to the video game, it can also be tricky to translate certain game mechanics into ones that work in the TCG–like Mega Evolution, for example.
“In the trading card game, you have your basic [Pokemon]. You evolve it to Stage 1 and [then Stage 2], so there are two steps to get to your final evolution in general. If we added another step on top of that, you just wouldn’t have enough room in your 60-card deck to really make that feasible,” Nagashima said. “So we took the approach of only having Mega Evolutions for cards that were already really strong–so there was already an EX card and then that would evolve to the Mega-EX. We tried to reduce the number of steps in that way.”
Ultimately, Nagashima says, the TCG team is always trying to keep things fresh and varied while still paying attention to the competitive meta, and it’s a complex balancing act even from the beginning.
Step Two: Illustrations
Once the team has decided on the kind of card they need and who (or what) will be on it, it’s time to get the art process started. Creatures currently works with 73 different illustrators and artists to ensure sets are varied. One of the most prolific of them is Mitsuhiro Arita, who’s been working on the TCG since the beginning and has illustrated 537 cards to date.
Above: Arita at the Creatures office. Slideshow: Mewtwo-GX, Giovanni’s Scheme, and the Lurantis card, all mentioned below.
Arita showed us his workspace at the Creatures office, part of a pod of desks set up for freelance artists to work on confidential designs. Each desk is configured based on the artists’ home offices, usually with tablets for digital art and coloring. He walked us through his illustration process for a recent Lurantis card, paying special attention to dynamic shading and bright background colors to capture the spirit of the Pokemon.
Creatures sends the artists details about the card: what the Pokemon is, the kinds of moves it will have, and any important background information, especially when the Pokemon in question is in a game that hasn’t come out yet. This also applies to Trainer cards, and even the vaguest instructions influence the art; for example, Arita received instructions for a Giovanni card with an “imposing” feel, so he gave it a more classical painting style rather than a cartoony one. For holographic cards, Arita will usually specify which parts of his art should shimmer, though the final holo design is a collaboration with Creatures staff.
In the Red and Green days, Arita and the other artists only had the in-game sprites and limited official artwork to work off of when creating cards. Still, he’s responsible for some of the most iconic cards from the original series, including holographic Charizard and the original fat Pikachu. In a binder filled with all his designs so far, the first few pages could have been any Pokemon-obsessed kid’s collection in the late ’90s.
“Specifically this Charizard and that Pikachu are some of the most memorable cards for I think a lot of people who played the game originally, and I always thought that I’d probably never be able to draw cards that people would like better than those two,” Arita said. But a Mewtwo-GX card he recently designed is his new favorite, and he says he’s been getting good feedback on it.
Unexpectedly, the same artist is unlikely to work on every Pokemon in an evolutionary line. In the original card series, Arita illustrated Bulbasaur and Venusaur but not Ivysaur (which was done by Pokemon artist Ken Sugimori). While there are some cases where a consistent style is called for across an evolutionary line–like these adorable Tepig family cards–they’re usually usually split up between artists, presumably for variety or time efficiency.
Efficiency especially is key, since many of the cards go into the testing phase even before the art is finished.
Step Three: Full-Time Playtesting
At Creatures, there’s a special room dedicated to testing the card game. It’s in the back of the small office, and it’s filled only with tables, chairs, and drawers upon drawers filled with years of Pokemon cards. Seven hours a day, five days a week, 19 playtesters play the TCG to see how new cards fare. (The odd number doesn’t seem to be a problem, apparently.)
Because they’re mostly testing cards that haven’t been released yet, the playtesters have to work with what they have. Work-in-progress cards are actually stickers put on old cards so they can still be played in normal decks; if the illustrations aren’t finalized, these stickers will use generic art of the Pokemon (or whatever the card subject is) with the complete moves, name of the card, and suggested effects, HP, and damage.
According to test room lead Satoru Inoue, those smaller adjustments happen “extremely often,” while they’ll usually see at most two or three drastic revisions before cards are finalized. Nagashima noted that competitive players will sometimes use released cards in completely unexpected ways, in which case the card has to be banned–he specifically called out Lysandre’s Trump Card, which was banned in 2015 for making games severely imbalanced.
Even with all the playtesting, competitive players regularly surprise the team. Nagashima cited Shintaro Ito’s Mega Audino deck, which won him the 2016 Pokemon World Championships in the Masters Division, as a recent example–he didn’t expect the card to be nearly as viable as it was.
Inoue, Nagashima, and Arita in the Creatures lobby.
Nagashima’s favorite strategy, though, is one he himself was heavily involved in designing: the infamous Night March deck, which dominated much of the competitive scene in 2016 and won the US Nationals that year.
“I was only making it with the assumption that it would maybe make it to the finals, but not take the entire thing!”
Walking back through the office at the end of the tour, nearly every desk is filled with Pokemon toys and merch. It’s very clear: From the design and art to the test room, the most important thing for Creatures’ TCG team is loving Pokemon.

500,000 Dp!
To get 500,000 dp + over 10,000 experience ALL INONE BATTLE, first you need to get download recipe2 by connecting to the Yu-Gi-Oh! website (Found inmain menu). Second, you must beat the game withall of the page one characters. The best way toget their hearts up is to give them sandwiches (sowhat if they’re 500 dp each, after this you canbuy literally a thousand sandwiches!) Then, youmust find Mimicry around the school and challengehim to a duel (Mimicry looks like one of theteachers such as Lioside, Dean etc.) Next, beacuseyou beat the game with all of the characters youcan buy any pack (Except the last one, unless youhave 90% of the card collection). This is thehardest part: You must buy enough packs tocomplete the main deck of download recipe 2. Thisis hard because you’ll need loads of dp, maybe50k. Check the card in the deck recipe to see whatpack you can find it in. After gettin all of thecards in the recipe, challenge Mimicry in FreeDuel mode. You can make Mimicry use any of thedecks you completed. So set his deck to thedownload recipe #2. To duel him, use a deck thatcan destroy his monsters when summoned. Or, youcan make a deck you think can beat him by comingup with a strategy after looking at the recipe. After beating Mimicry, you will get over 500,000dp and over 10,000 experience! TFSP Re-Translation Progress (WIP): Shark Story #3, Duel Lines Test VS Yuma
Finished up finalizing my GX 120-121 subs a couple weeks back, so after giving Yuma's first two story events and in-duel lines a polish (since I worked on them for my project announcement video), I finished his last two events and went onto Shark's story script, also giving his in-duel lines a revision and then working fresh on his bio. It's neat that Yuma's events get you to his confrontation with a Shark who's accepted being Nasch from his POV, while Shark's take you to the same confrontation from his POV as he comes to terms with it. Was also nice scripting up dialogue for the Barians, especially Vector who I liked after finally watching ZEXAL in full recently. And for fun, ofc wanted to throw in some ZEXAL OST for this; I'm not as fully in-tune with the OST as I am for the other shows', so it'll be a fun editing experiment, lol. (Though with the songs getting content-matched by YouTube, I might mix more game OST back into these WIP previews 😅)
(Only disappointment is the game doesn't feature the Barians' Barian forms, so we don't get Shark turning into Nasch at all. But to their credit, they at least start Shark's events using his sprite without his later Barian Necklace, which he gets as of his second event once he's accepted being Nasch.)
So, Yuma and Shark are all done; off to now finalize my subs for GX 122-123 [while avoiding all the zombies] and then it'll be Kite's turn. Stay tuned!

How A Pokemon Card Is MadeHow A Pokemon Card Is Madevideo games
