When my family spent the night at my grandparents’ house when I was a kid, my siblings and I always got up early with Grandma. She made us tea in the little pink plastic tea set, and toast with honey, and we bickered over who got to sit in Grandpa’s chair at the head of the dining room table (when he entered the room, he would gasp dramatically and demand to know who was sitting in his chair, and we would giggle madly and blame Grandma for letting us be so mischievous).
After the tea party, we would all get dressed and bundle up and walk with Grandpa to the bakery a few blocks away. One of the blocks in their neighborhood had a narrow sidewalk that cut between the backyards, lined with overgrown bushes. Grandpa let us believe it was our little secret, a mysterious pathway meant just for us on our morning quest. At the bakery, we each got to pick out a cookie to eat on the walk home, while Grandpa carried the box of muffins for everyone’s breakfast.
They still have that little pink tea set.
Tell me a soft memory

Whenever my grandparents’ black lab would do that thing dogs do where they wiggle around and rub their head (or whole body) against you in a playful manner they’d ask “Skal jeg mules?” which means something along the lines of “Am I getting muled?” and if the dog did it to me they’d laugh and say “Uh oh! You’re getting muled!”
I thought it was just a cutesy word they made up but 30 years later I’m watching a period drama and at one point a man gets angry and wants to beat up another guy so he loudly declares “I’m going to mule him!”
So all this time my grandparents were joking about dogs beating up their owners in a super old fashioned way and suddenly their joke is 100x funnier.

I went to my grandparents’ house and Michael Cera was there. My dad gave me and Michael a motivational speech and while he was speaking I saw a montage of people doing yoga on a beach with The Rock.

I personally only ever knew my maternal grandpa, my grandmas died before I was born and the other grandfather was not in my life. I can count the times I met him on one hand. I never really cared that he wasn’t around, if anything I’m just really bummed I missed out on the grandma experience. The one grandparent I knew before he passed at 95 was a WWII plane mechanic and veteran, and a truck driver afterward. He was always good to me though I wouldn’t say we were super close. Still he was the one that came over for dinner and holidays and I do miss him.

Alright, so a big part of my trip out to Oregon was to visit family. All the family on my mom's side lives out there, so it was a mini family reunion. Grandma wound up giving me my late grandfather's banjo.

I am very happy that it made it back in one piece.
