MuseScorer of the month: Takernikov
And here comes August’s MuseScorer of the Month!
In case you missed it, each month we pick one of MuseScore.com’s brilliant members, featuring him or her in an interview available to all MuseScorers. Last month we introduced you to flutist and composer Robin M. Butler.
Now, please welcome: the MuseScorer Of August, Takeru aka Takernikov from Fukuoka, Japan.
“I love the words of my professor at the university. He said, that good music has ‘consistency’ and ‘variety’; If no consistency, it would be confusing. If no variety, it’d be boring.”
The following interview is featuring Takeru and is conducted by our staff member Alexander T.
- Hi, Takeru. It’s a pleasure to meet you! Tell our readers, please, a few words about yourself.
Hello, Alexander, nice to meet you too. Well, I’m from Fukuoka, northern side of Kyushu island, Japan, and live in this city with my wife and a little son (three years old right now). I studied acoustic design at the university, i.e. solving room acoustic issues with physics. Actually I wanted to study at conservatory but my musical skills were not good enough to pass the examination. Luckily, I had an opportunity to take composing classes at the university. So, I learnt music theory, notation, how to compose, and musical forms like sonata. Now, I’ve been an IT engineer specialized in networks for a decade, I like this job. My experience as a musician includes playing: - tuba, double bass and clarinet at high-school; - bassoon and contrabassoon at university; - piano - since I turned 15 years old.
- Cool, such a variety of instruments ! Did you come a long way to learn playing them?
Actually I was kinda tone deaf when in junior high school. There were lotta choral classes sadly, the music teacher pointed out my tone deafness every time, some students teased me. But, finally, I overcame that so-called “tone deafness”; I got interested in music, I began to play piano, which had been bought by my mother when she got married. Then, I played in a brass band in high school. As far as I remember, at some point I came across a really attracting piece called “El Camino Real”. First time I saw the score, I was confused about the key signature for transposing instruments, but I found my own way to read it. The skill I got at that time has helped me a lot later, when studying from the other composer’s work. I was also playing contrabass for a year, clarinet for two months and tuba for about two years. When I entered university, as I have already said, I began to play bassoon and contrabassoon in the “Orchestra club”. I’ve played symphonies (Brahms No.1, 4, Beethoven No.5, 7, 9, Tchaikovsky No.5, 6, Rachmaninoff No.1, 2, Dvorak No.5, 7, 8, 9, Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique, and so on), overtures and suites. I tried to perform in a rock band as a keyboard player, but sadly it wasn’t good…
- But, anyway, trying something different is always (or almost always) a nice experience...Well, let’s talk about your composing experience: what is that about for you, and what or who helped you to start composing?
Apart from the composing classes at the university, I took part in picking musical pieces for upcoming concerts as a member of the council of the university orchestra (I was a leading bassoon player). We listened to all of the ‘candidate’ scores to decide whether they are playable for our orchestra, worthwhile or not. So,I read a lot of scores from Bach to Shostakovich. Especially I’ve been curious about the orchestration, I tried to understand, how do composers notate their music to make it sound really nice and beautiful.
At first, I tried to compose something with Finale when in the university, about eleven years ago, but quitted composing after I graduated. As I dislike using a mouse, I felt it was inefficient to notate with drag and drop, so I lost some motivation. Then, when I was searching for sheet music from Final Fantasy XV soundtrack for piano, I came across this amazing MuseScore notation program. I remember, that I was greatly impressed by the features MuseScore had (and still has, of course). It has intuitive UI for me, mostly I can notate with keyboard quickly as if writing a document. Till that day I hadn’t composed a piece for about ten years. But now almost everything motivates me to compose, but especially natural landscapes or some exercises (sports) I did or things happened to me...
- ...and now, as I can see, you’ve got a plenty of your own pieces on MuseScore.com Can you describe at least some of them?
All-right. Let’s start with Snow Run - one Sunday morning I did a trail run with friends through an urban forest park and some ranch, the duration of the 3D map movie generated by my GPS log data on the run was 52 seconds, so I decided to compose this piece in 2/4, 52 measures with 120 bpm to make it easy to count. Composed this piece within an hour or so - I realized I could compose quicker than imagined...
- Sorry for interrupting, but I wonder - do you often compose these “GPS-log” pieces after your morning runs, and is that the only reason why most of your compositions are short?
Basically there are two reasons for that: 1: you are right about the “GPS compositions”: after I do some endurance exercise like cycling or running, there’s some service which can create some short movies by my GPS logs. Usually the duration of the movies are short, less than 1-2 minutes; I compose for this ‘movies’ on the same day and share with my friends. 2: I said “compose on the same day”. I set a deadline for myself and try to accomplish that on time. Kind of repetitive practices, it’s a good way to express my feelings and to ‘improve productivity’ in my opinion. I feel, this affects even my job activity in a good way as well.
- So, let’s continue with your compositions…
Ok, then I’ll tell you about a couple more. La Chute D'eau élargi - inspired by French impressionists, deliberately titled in French, however, it includes some pentatonic scales, so for me it sounds like some Japanese folk music. Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa - an attempt to create minimal music from my original phrases I came up with, after I was reading a picture book for my son. That sounds a little weird, but I ended up with clear and refreshing atmosphere in this piece.
- Nice pieces, the second one reminded me of Steve Reich. And now, here is our “traditional” question: what have you shared on MuseScore.com that you’re most proud of (and why are you proud of it) ?
It’s Symphonic Poem “Mamacoco”. This is the most emotional and dramatic one I have ever composed. Although I’m generally a short piece composer, the duration of this one is about 14min. and it contains almost everything I could do as a composer. Attempted to fill it with beautiful melodies and counterpoints in the tonal slow part, and to make it exciting in the quasi-atonal fast part, naturally “covered” the previous slow melodies with different instruments (brass). I was surprised what I did actually, huge resolution followed by very tensed atmosphere before the recapitulation. The last part starts with almost sad flute’s phrase, it gradually changes to a kind of brilliant sounding.
Symphonic Poem “Mamacoco” by Takernikov
- I love the melodies in it, for me “Mamacoco” sounds like ‘pastoral’ music. I wonder what composers/performers influenced you. And, generally, what are your favorites?
I love Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, and that’s why my MuseScore account name is “Takernikov”, like a Russian surname. I don’t mean that I’m limited by the Romantic era, I also respect Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Debussy, Ravel, Liszt, even Steve Reich. In film composing, Hans Zimmer is the first composer that comes to my mind. Generally, most of the film composers affected me: James Horner, Steve Jablonsky, Joe Hisaishi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, etc..Honestly saying, the composer I can’t even imitate is Don Davis. His music, especially the orchestration and atonality in it, is outstanding in my opinion.
Would like to admit, that Takernikov is the first composer I met, whose beautiful music is often inspired by morning runs and whose pieces’ length really depend on the time he devoted to his physical exercises. That’s an interesting fact and Takeru is a really nice composer, it was a pleasure for me to do this interview and to meet him.
Thank you, guys, for reading.
Yours, Alexander T.
P.S. Following the nice tradition - I am adding here a piece I really enjoyed , this is a kind of “spanish sketch” composed by Mr.Takernikov.
Él irá a España by Takernikov

BirdOrNot.net - Is it a bird or not?
As a technical person and developer, I'm a big fan of XKCD which makes entertaining comics about our industry. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon this one:
Turns out that it was published September 2014, almost exactly 5 years ago, the time the team would need to solve the problem according to the comic. So, I thought, this should be solved now, right? And it turns out it did!
Today I'm proud to announce: BirdOrNot.net
BirdOrNot.net uses the Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered object detection capability in Azure Cognitive Services to find out if the image contains a bird and, in some cases, it even finds out what species it is. I didn't have to hire a team of researchers for five years, instead Microsoft did and made the result available as a service in Azure.
Using that specific service, I was able to go from idea to working concept in under an hour, with a few more hours spent on CSS :)
Below you can see a few samples, feel free to try it out yourself on the site: https://birdornot.net/
It builds on the default object detection model provided by Azure Cognitive Services, which can detect anything from buildings, vehicles to animals. It does a very good job of detecting birds, but as it's not specialized on birds, there will be cases where it makes mistakes. Still, shows how the power of AI and ML can be used by everyone who knows how to call a webservice.
If you boil it down, these are the few lines that powers the site:
var imageAnalysis = await computerVisionClient.AnalyzeImageAsync(url, new List { VisualFeatureTypes.Objects }); var isBird = imageAnalysis.Objects.Any(x => x.ObjectProperty.Equals("bird")); Console.WriteLine(isBird ? "It is a bird." : "It is not a bird.");
You can see a simple sample with the code above at GitHub.
Behind the scenes
The source code is fully available at GitHub, feel free to dig around to learn how it works. If you want to run it yourself, the image that runs on the site is available at dockerhub (peterorneholm/orneholmbirdornotweb).
docker run --env AzureComputerVisionSubscriptionKey=XYZ --env AzureComputerVisionEndpoint=ABC peterorneholm/orneholmbirdornotweb
For those of you that are interested, here comes a brief explanation on the setup.
Architecture
Object recognition
The service is using Azure Cognitive Services to analyse the image. It fetches the following info:
VisualFeatureTypes.Objects (Used for detecting the birds and getting their bounding rectangles. Checks the object hierarchy to detect species.)
VisualFeatureTypes.Description (Used to describe the image with text and tags.)
VisualFeatureTypes.Adult (Used to decline images classed as Adult, Gory or Racy.)
Code
The website is written in ASP.NET Core 3 and packaged as a container running Linux.
Hosting
The container is published to dockerhub and then automatically deployed to Azure App Service for easy management and scale out if needed.
Cache
The costly part in the application (both money and time) is the analysis of an image, therefore every unique URL is cached. The application uses the IDistributedCache interface and is configured to use Azure cache for Redis (hosted) as the implementation.
In case the site would go viral, I'm distributing it through Azure Frontdoor. By doing so I have HTTP cache at the edge so that the samples and landing page will have no impact on the backend and be served immediately.
Analytics
The site is monitored through Azure Application Insights / Azure Monitor. I store anonymous telemetry on how the site is used and by collecting feedback on wheter or not the audience agrees with the AI motor, it could be used to improve over time.
I've activated a custom alert that will send me an email in case the traffic to the site would rapidly increase.
Cost
There are a few basic costs involved. But the part that could become expensive is the analytics of images. I've estimated it to cost roughly $5 USD / 1000 images analyzed. By caching the results I'm preventing the samples to cost me any money and I will be able to handle the cost for quite a lot of images.
Next steps
Here are a few things I've thought about implementing:
Custom Vision: I would like to add som custom models to detect "Bird like" things, like Big Yellow Bird, Jack Sparrow etc. I could use Azure Custom Vision for this, just give me some time and I'll fix it :)
The XKCD above also mentions the task of detecting if the photo is taken in a national park. I've thought of using Azure Maps to find the POI based on GPS coordinates stored in the picture.
Make it a PWA and publish it to Store(s)
Interested in even more details?
If you or your company wants to know more about services like this, I deliver a session/Workshop called "Democratizing AI with Azure Cognitive Services" which shows the potential of Cognitive Services by fun and creative examples. Please drop me an email if you want more details.

Enduro-WM u. Enduro-DM “Rund um Zschopau” vom 20. bis 22. Oktober 2017

DuckTales (2017) - “Woo-oo!”
Story by: Francisco Angones, Colleen Evanson, Noelle Stevenson, Madison Bateman, Nate Federman, Matt Youngberg
Written by: Francisco Angones
Directed by: Dana Terrance, John Aoshima
Storyboard by: Emmy Cicierega, Ben Holm, Jason Reicher, David Baker, Matthew Humphreys, Tanner Johnson
Surprise! Actually, I made it pretty obvious.
Just a reminder: it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the original DuckTales. If you’re expecting me to make comparisons between this show and the original like I occasionally do with that other particular reboot that must not be named, you’re going to be disappointed. On with the review.
This episode starts with a non-anthropomorphic seagull flying in the air. The seagull flies across some other ducks who live on boats, and they’re kind of disgusted at this weird duck that’s much smaller than them and can’t talk. One of the boat-dwellers happens to be Donald Duck, along with his three nephews: Huey, the red one with the head accessory, Dewey, the blue one, and Louie, the green one.
Huh, red one, blue one, and green one. Maybe this isn't as much of a curveball as I thought. I’m just going to call them HDL, unless it's specifically one of them doing something, which will be often for one of them in particular. Surprisingly, not the one with the hat.
For instance, as soon as we cut to Donald Duck’s boathouse, we see Louie forcing his uncle’s clothes off. Oh, no worries, Louie is just trying to prepare Donald for his job interview. He’s got to wear his nicest suit, not the sailor uniform he usually wears with his current job of “none”. Yeah, he’s not going to the Navy and be mostly absent like in the original. In fact, he’s a major character now, and I’ll write more about that later once he gets into a bigger role in this episode.
One thing I will say right off the bat is that Donald Duck still has that voice, and the show gives him quite a bit of dialogue you’re supposed to understand. Most of his humor is slapstick, as it should be, but I wouldn’t fault anyone if they needed the closed captions. It’s one of those flaws that is far, far better than any real alternative, and Disney, its fans, and I wouldn’t want Donald’s voice any other way. This rule doesn’t apply to any of the other ducks, of course.
Some things other than voices do change, though. One great way to tell that this isn't 1987 anymore is that, while struggling with the boys to get them to put their life-vests on, he picks up his smartphone to call the babysitter asking where she is. Cellphones are going to be a big part of this episode, but it's also a big part of real life. It's a far better way to modernize a show than adding memes.
With the futility of leaving them home alone without Dewey hotwiring the boat, Donald is left with no other choice. He throws them all in the car to drop them off somewhere for a few hours. The boy’s displeasure immediately gets erased when Donald Duck keys in the directions on his car’s GPS.
GPS: Destination...McDuck Manor.
Huey: McDuck...as in SCROOGE MCDUCK?!!
The nephews have heard of the legends surrounding their great uncle Scrooge McDuck. He punched a rock monster and carved a statue out of its leg, he was able to figure out the chupacabra was just a shaved bear, and, said last as if it’s the most unbelievable thing, he only hunts for treasure so he can swim in it! I’d make a joke about that, but I’d be the millionth and one to say it.
HDL are super excited to be with the most interesting duck in the world. Okay, they don’t use that exact wording; they didn’t outright make a reference that would date the show. Even if it was, this scene would still work to show off how great and adventurous Scrooge McDuck is.
Or used to be, as this plays a perfect contrast with a cut to the Scrooge McDuck of the present, sitting bored and playing with his coins while listening to a trio of literal vulture capitalists saying he should lay off on the submarines. Of course, this acts as a contrast to HDL’s “most exciting duck in the world” statement, which is the exact wording. This scene also carries a lot more weight considering the long distance between the original and the reboot, even though the original is clearly no longer canon.
We see Scrooge McDuck, adventurer, now just a gazillionaire sitting through financial briefings and just dropping some gold into his money bin and closing it. We get to see Launchpad McQuack, the clumsy pilot of both DuckTales and Darkwing Duck, as a clumsy limo driver. It’s been a long time since either of them have been on adventures, in the show and in a meta sense.
Scrooge McDuck gets the boys, and he has to be told by the housekeeper, Mrs. Beakley, to actually interact with them. They immediately start fanboying, asking him questions and telling him that he used to be such a big deal. Losing his temper, he throws them in an old spare room, with Mrs. Beakley giving them a bag of marbles to play with. He's not hip with the kids, and it becomes a big plot point later on.
He later goes back to his room, and he rubs off some dust on a window between him and a diving suit. It’s made quite clear that the trio’s “you used to be a big deal” is setting him off. Again, lots of weight considering the time.
Of course, the boys aren’t too happy to be locked in a room, so Dewey breaks it open by banging it with the bag of marbles. It’s clear that they’re trying to give HDL distinct roles, something extremely rare in the comics, and only slightly less rare in the earlier cartoons. They prepare to touch some expensive stuff, only to get captured again by a shadowy figure. They get interrogated while hanging from the ceiling until they yell for Uncle Scrooge.
Webby: (gasp) Nephews! Tell me everything!
This is the reboot’s version of Webby, granddaughter of Mrs. Beakley, and it’s one of the most drastic changes this reboot does to the original. The original Webby is portrayed as a doll with a arrow shot through its heart in the tied up scene. That’s how much the writers want you to know that they really wanted to change Webby. Here, she's an idol of Scrooge McDuck, and wants to be a great adventurer just like him.
She also feels trapped. While Mrs. Beakley is alright with her preparing for it, she doesn't want her to go out to see the dangers of the world. So...a Disney Princess, but more like Rapunzel than, say, Aurora. The one from Sleeping Beauty that's known for, you know, sleeping. She opens a ventilation shaft for the boys to crawl through, so they can try to explore more of the manor.
Speaking of Mrs. Beakley, she barges into Scrooge McDuck’s room after hearing a bunch of noise, and we see Scrooge McDuck putting on that heavy diving suit. Mrs. Beakley reminds him he should spend time with his family instead, but Scrooge wants nothing to do with that. In his words, family is nothing but trouble. Dewey overhears this, as he crawls through the ventilation system, which makes him a little more weary about the great uncle.
They get out of the ventilation system, and they end up right outside what Webby calls the “Wing of Secrets”. That might be a pun.
This room contains a lot of weird items, including a gong that, if hit three times, will launch unspeakable evil. It’s going to get hit three times. Louie, already established as being the most rascally of the group, is busy calling dibs on the stuff. He only lived with his great uncle for less than a couple minutes, and Louie is already thinking about his inheritance! She does stop Louie from touching a hand that turns anything it touches to stone. It's going to be used to turn something into stone.
Being far more disinterested as his dislike for his great uncle grows, Dewey makes a bombshell statement that causes the rest of the group sans Webby to stop and think.
Dewey: It’s fake.
They were absolutely enamored by this guy when the GPS guy talked about McDuck Manor, but this one little thing, and they think he's a fraud. Well, maybe it isn't so little.
They see their Uncle Donald, and they just don’t see him as the adventuring type. The other two agree, and immediately start calling the other items fakes. Of course, Webby is flabbergasted by this, as, to her, Donald Duck is one of the best adventurers around.
Much like the “most exciting duck in the world” comment, we have to have a contrasting scene here, too. We then cut to Donald Duck waiting for his interview alongside a neat little cameo from A Goofy Movie, doing one of his trademark outbursts at a stapler.
Webby: But what about the picture of the chupacabra?
Huey: Photoshop.
Cellphones, GPS, and now Adobe Photoshop. Well, okay, While HDL tries to disprove all of this worth, Webby opens a treasure chest that reveals a floating sheet. The boys are convinced it’s just a Halloween decoration in there. Dewey pull off the sheets...
...and it turns out to be Captain Peghook, the Scourge of the River Styx. This instantly convinces the boys that, nope, it’s all real. Subplot over. They also wake up a headless man-horse and a magical sword called the Deus Excalibur. Both of these items hit the gong, and they wonder what could be worse than any of this.
Scrooge McDuck shows up, much to the chagrin, but before he could punish the boys, the ghost, the horse, and sword. To make a short story even shorter, he takes care of all three by doing one thing that causes a chain of events. I feel like being more specific wouldn’t add anything to this review. This causes a celebration among the kids until he puts his cane down.
He also tells Webby that this isn’t a Wing of Secrets, it’s the garage. Webby tries to counter this by pointing out items like...a “garden hose of destiny”. Dewey quotes back the “family is nothing but trouble” line, which really gets on his nerves. While this was all entertaining, a part of me was thinking to myself, “he’s going to hit the gong, he’s going to hit the gong, he’s going to hit the gong...”
Sure enough, he hits the gong! He does defend himself by saying he couldn’t have known it was hit twice before. Kind of a lapse of judgment, but it's better than not knowing what evil could have lurked. This evil happens to be a gold-hunting dragon, who immediately sniffs the scent of the famous giant money bin. Scrooge immediately grabs onto the dragon, telling the kids to go to their room.
Simple answer: they don't.
Slightly longer answer: this leads to a action scene, as Scrooge McDuck holds on to the dragon, while the boys and Webby get Launchpad McQuack to save him. I don't really want to talk too much about this, as I can't really add anything that wouldn't just be summary.
I will mention one thing: I like how the “garden hose of destiny” plays a part in this. They didn’t even need to go back to that joke, but they did anyway. Everything is connected, and it is seen throughout this entire cartoon. It ends with the Scrooge using that hand, and he safely lands in the money he was perfectly trained to swim in. The boys get worried for a second; I wonder if they thought about what usually happens when you land on a pile of metal.
...there, millionth and two.
After all of that, it's official: Scrooge McDuck is back in the business of adventure! This is where the episode would end, but I guess it would be disappointing if we didn't see that Atlantis adventure. It turns out, Scrooge will not be alone on said adventure, and I don't just mean HDL, Webby, and Launchpad.
It turns out, Donald Duck's job interview was a success, though not for the accounting job he wanted. Instead, he's a sailor, working for a certain someone.
Flintheart Glomgold, the second richest Scottish duck in the world, and he’s not happy about that placing. I know he's one of the classic villains. He knows just as well as Scrooge McDuck does that there’s a jewel for him to take.
Glomgold: Now, what do you know about...Atlantis?
What we just watched was the longest cold open ever, as the theme song starts right after that threat. They knew very well that nothing can be as catchy as the original 1987 show’s theme song, so it’s a modern Disney take on the classic theme sung by American Idol contestant Felicia Barton. The original can't be beat, but it doesn't do a bad job either.
I have nothing but good things to say about the visuals. It's a lot more abstract than the original, with Scrooge and the kids jumping out of comic panels, a great reference to DuckTales' roots, and eventually climbing the DuckTales logo. We even get some glimpses at the new Beagle Boys, who don't appear in this episode, so those mercanaries aren't replacements for them.
It's all well animated, and one thing I can say that should be a plus is that the animation in the show proper isn't as much of a downgrade as certain other cartoons.
Part 2 of this episode starts with Glomgold’s employee training video. He prides himself on taking ideas that were already done and making them his own, doing them better, faster, and cheaper. There would be a good joke to put here if this cartoon was worse.
While he's watching this, Donald Duck is secretly talking to Scrooge on how to take care of the nephews. Scrooge McDuck tells him not to worry, as he has a laid back schedule ahead. Of course, he's actually going into a submarine in search for the jewel of Atlantis.
One of the big plots in this episode with many of the characters is trying to keep secrets by lying, whether it be Louie telling Donald Duck that he's doing boring stuff while in the submarine, or a whole section of plot dedicated to Webby lying to her overprotective grandmother that she's going to a party.
This even continues with Dewey, seriously, he does a lot of things in this special, erasing a line on the map to a more direct path that's filled with monsters.
It leads to them getting attacked by those monsters in three one second scenes. It’s a joke anyone can see coming. There is a hidden depth in this beyond just "those kids are rascals", and it's another bit of conflict between Dewey and Scrooge.
Scrooge: You kids would be the death of me!
Dewey: DEWEY would be the death of you! DEWEY!
Scrooge says that the kids are going to be the death of him. He doesn't see HDL as three different people, just some family that's nothing but trouble. Later in the episode, Dewey challenges him to say which one he's supposed to be, and Scrooge doesn't know. I'll be honest, I got it wrong when I first watched this, too, even though they do try to seperate them a little more than usual.
Meanwhile, on Glomgold's unmarked boat, Donald is showing off pictures of him and his nephews to his co-workers, who are all mercenaries with names like Cabby McStabberson. An alarm sounds, and they see Scrooge McDuck is also after the jewel of Atlantis. Donald wonders why Scrooge is there, and is even more insensed to see the boys, saying he's going to kill them.
Glomgold takes that literally, to Donald's chagrin, and he starts to give him praise for giving them a great idea to kill Scrooge. This becomes one of the running gags with Glomgold and Donald: not only is he working for evil, evil sees him as a good employee. Also, they are able to use the word kill; none of that getting here.
So once they get to Atlantis, there's all of these plot threads. Along with the main plot of Scrooge trying to get the jewel of Atlantis, we have a lot of family drama. One great nephew in particular, Dewey, wants to confront Scrooge on his lack of caring for his family. A nephew, Donald, is working with, and yet wants to protect his nephews as well. And there's Webby's grandmother, who can't help but keep calling Webby wondering if she's okay at this party she went to.
This is all going at once, and the only confusing thing is how that cell phone would work when they're at the bottom of the sea. I guess when you're with a bajillionaire, anything is possible.
Talking more about Donald Duck, it’s interesting to see Donald in a much, much bigger role than he had in the original. Judging by the opening, this will follow through throughout the series. The stuff he goes through is very fitting. A highlight is during a scene where HDL tries to get past a laser bridge that causes, and Donald desperately tries to shield them from lava shooting out of what would have been the ceiling.
I don't want to get into any more spoiler territory than that, so all I can say is that it all gets tied up at the end. They even get out of a surprisingly insightful death trap, which teaches Donald that sometimes, you just got to trust people. Dewey even calls it a "surprisingly insightful death trap".
While the Dewey and Scrooge plot and the Donald and Everyone Else plot gets handled well enough, the Webby and Mrs. Beakley plot just kind of ends with Mrs. Beakley being okay with it, only telling her that she shouldn't lie. It's the closest thing to a forced moral in this episode, but at least it's all taken care of without spending too much time on "Liar Revealed" scenes.
I don’t want to ruin the fun for anyone who wants to watch this, which should be everyone, but I’m not spoiling too much when I say the good guys win, right? Obviously, it’s a bit more complicated than that, but that’s what happens. It even leads to this line, from one of the newsreporters on the scene.
Newsreporter: Scrooge McDuck is back, with family in tow, solving mysteries, and rewriting history!
Oh yeah, that reference was beautiful. In the end, Dewey goes back to the "Wing of Secrets"/garage, and there is a really neat cliffhanger with the same painting that led HDL to doubt Uncle Scrooge’s accomplishments. I won’t spoil it, but there’s going to be some continuity in this. Unlike other certain reboots, it will definitely be touched upon again. Woo-oo!
How does it stack up?
I was of the opinion that maybe we should just leave the past alone and start making new cartoons instead of trying to reinterpret our favorites of old. Maybe it's because it's Disney and not Cartoon Network, but this show is an exception. At the very least, it's a great start.
If you want to watch three siblings that wear red, blue, and green going on adventures, this is the show to watch. Obviously, I’m not going to use a character from a far lesser cartoon to grade this cartoon, but I don’t have three faces by the same person to use here, so...have a Two Thumbs Up Dewey!
(Special thanks to martosi231234! Far better than an emoji.)
But I’m really just delaying the inevitable. This Saturday on FPB...it’s back to the usual.
Oh boy. Oh, and just in case...

Peroni, 19, was fortunately able to walk away from the horror smash in Monza on Saturday
Peroni looked shocked but was able to walk away from the horror crash using mar shals and medical staff. No other drivers were involved.
As a result, the sausage sidewalk had to be removed in the last corner of the Italian circuit before Formula 1 qualified there later on Saturday.
The third and last practice session for Formula 1 was delayed while the guard rail was repaired and the curb was removed.
Peroni, from Hobart in Tasmania, is his first season in the Formula 3 championship. He finished 18th in the drivers' classification and entered the Monza weekend with his best finish to date in France.
In the past years, Peroni had raced in the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault NEC races and won the 2016 Challenge Monoplace series.
Formula 3 qualifying had to be stopped on Friday for safety reasons after a row of cars in the back were right in front of each other ready to start their timed runs while others were approaching speed.
Who the hell thought it was a good idea to plant a worbling beach on the outside of the parabolic plant? Just put grass and gravel back for God's sake. Good to see Peroni running away from that scary accident # F3

The crash comes just a week after the death of Formula 2 Anthoine Hubert during the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps.
French driver Hubert, 22, hit a tire wall on the Eau Rouge corner in Spa after losing control of his car.
When he returned to the circuit, the American driver Juan-Manuel Correa cut through him.
Correa, 20, was placed in an induced complication after the crash and is still in a & # 39; critical but stable & # 39; situation in a London hospital.
Hubert was the first driver's death during the Formula 1 racing weekend since Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger were killed in Imola in 1994.
F2 driver Anthoine Hubert died in the United States after the horror crash during the Belgian GP
The crash occurred in the Eau Rouge section of the course of the second lap after Hubert's car hit a barrier and rolled back to the center of the lane before a rival hit him

DIZAJN I ERGONOMIJA
Xperia XZ3, iPhone Xs Max, OnePlus 6
Osnovnu kamera aplikaciju odlikuju brzina i zaista vrhunski poštelani algoritmi s kojima će i foto ignoranti poput mene snimiti super fotke.
Evo galerije:

iOS 12
PERFORMANSE I BATERIJA
Sva tri nova iPhonea pa tako i iPhone Xs Max pokreće Appleov novi 7-nanometarski šestojezgreni A12 Bionic čip s novim grafičkim koprocesorom. Oba Xs modela imaju 4GB RAM-a, dok Xr stiže s 3GB RAM-a.
S kvalitetom telefonskih poziva i prijemom signala ja nisam imao problema. Sve uredno.
Ostali će ovim punjačem u paketu puniti laganih tri i pol sata. Tko voli nek’ izvoli.
OCJENA
Xperia XZ3, iPhone Xs Max, OnePlus 6
Tko voli nek’ izvoli.

The Worst Advices We’ve Heard For Audi A26 Review | audi a26 review
The electric car anarchy is aloft us. The mainstream, afterwards years of watching Tesla crank out its Roadster, Model S, Model X and best contempo Model 3 (well, aloof about), is communicable up. Jaguar’s I-Pace, for example, has garnered abundant praise. Now Audi is basic its aboriginal blast in the war for EV supremacy: the E-tron SUV.
2019 Audi A7 Review and First Drive – AutoGuide.com News – audi a7 review | audi a7 review
Audi’s E-tron name has been about for a while – mostly as an add-on to addition car in the range. The Q7 E-tron constituent amalgam is a Q7 with eco-cred. However, E-tron was never declared to be alone a powertrain option, but a car in its own right. The aboriginal standalone E-tron, an SUV, is about aloft us, so I abutting a heavilycamo’d archetype on Pikes Peak, Colorado, to see what accomplish Ingolstadt has taken to ensure its EV SUV will feel like a 18-carat Audi – and be a competent accustomed car.
Download the all-new Microsoft News app – accessible now on iOS and Android
Pikes Aiguille is additionally a absolute abode for Audi to appearance off how the E-tron will accord with activity regeneration. We won’t be demography the car up the peak, but rather benumbed bottomward it to see how abundant activity it regains and how it does so.
At 05:00 on top of a aphotic mountain, the E-tron stood out adjoin an aphotic dejected sky. Wearing ablaze appearance – atramentous and white with ablaze orange highlights – it was adamantine to miss. All the acceptable Audi architecture cues were present and correct: big grille, animated rear ablaze arrangement, pointy headlamps, and the four rings benumbed appreciative advanced and back.
It has a absolutely new body, although at a glance you could be forgiven for cerebration it looked a little like a Q5. They’re both mid-size SUVs, afterwards all, and there’s not abundant you can do with SUV styling. Look a little closer, though, and you’ll see some standout details.
E-tron badging is an accessible one, sitting appreciative on the car’s flanks. But the bigger aberration is the addition mirrors, or added absolutely the abridgement thereof. Rather than accepting big bottle aerial absorbed to anniversary side, there are wings with cameras that augment a alive angel to two screens in the cockpit. It’s additionally beyond than the Q5 – sitting amid it and the Q7 on the admeasurement scale.
The massive Audi grille, while present, is argent on the E-tron prototype. It looks appealing cool.
As it was covered in camo, it’s adamantine to acquaint whether the EV-friendly tweaks assignment able-bodied with Audi’s architecture accent or not.

In befitting with the exterior’s ‘car-shaped’ thinking, the autogenous is abundant as you’d apprehend from Audi. Although I was in a prototype, it was all anchored calm appropriately – it’ll outlive your grandkids.
2017 Audi A7 – Our Review | Cars.com – audi a7 review | audi a7 review
The birr architecture is clean, with a few curve that wouldn’t go awry on a Federation Starship actuality and there. Abundant like Audi’s A6 and A7, there are screens area already there were buttons. That agency that some key functions may be a brace of screens afar from one addition (an irritant), but it keeps the berth attractive tidy.
Those screens additionally let out a little cavernous fizz back pressed, so you apperceive you’ve hit your mark. It may complete like no big thing, but attempting to acclimatize settings on a Ambit Rover Velar’s feedback-free awning after sight-checking your assignment is hard…
The E-tron uses the now-familar Virtual Cockpit display. There are a few changes over the accepted Audi style, though: an activity beat and a allegation meter, for instance, to see whether the car is application or accepting activity in real-time.
The centre console, usually home to a bank pot to pop in your phone/daily guff, is absolutely deep. Unremarkable, you may think, but it absolutely shows how abundant amplitude a acceptable manual adit takes up.
You’ll additionally atom a set of paddles abaft the council wheel. They’re not there to drag about an abstract gearbox, but to acclimatize the severity of the E-tron’s energy-regen tech. The aforementioned tech I was there to experience.
First ride
© Audi Audi E-tron
The E-tron is still a prototype, so I was in the commuter bench for this one. The car acicular downwards, and we set off to accession the antecedent ambit of 165km (103 miles) as aerial as possible. To do this we’d be application the car’s altered methods of activity recuperation.
There are three modes to do this while you’re coasting. The aboriginal does annihilation and lets the car aeon on as a approved automated would. The additional uses agent braking of sorts to add a little attrition to your roll, axis that contrarily ashen active activity into advantageous energy. And the third puts alike added attrition in place, acceptation you can drive the car application alone the throttle, appropriation off the gas to accompany the car to a stop on added akin surfaces. On the peak, though, we aloof kept rolling and axle on the power.
The car additionally generates ability back you use the anchor pedal – as is the case in ma

ny avant-garde cars.
Within a few account of rolling silently bottomward acropolis we’d added a brace of kilometres to the range. With the car set to coast, we neither acclimated or acquired any power, but flicking the paddle shifter afflicted all that. In the weaker compensate approach you could feel the car abide as it angry movement into abeyant miles. This got stronger, as admitting active through sand, back the additional compensate approach was selected.
Thanks to the attributes of Pike’s Peak, we kept affective anytime downwards. You can accept your own about-face level, or you can set the car to do it for you. It’ll use GPS data, all-embracing alarm and car-to-X comms to apprehend the alley advanced and adjudge how astringent the regen is. Acute being if you don’t appetite to row your own paddles.
While all this was activity on, I noticed the audible abridgement of noise. OK, the anchorage up there are air-conditioned smooth, but there was little boom from the tyres, no blare from the addition cameras. It was whisper-quiet. The affectionate of quiet that car companiesadvertise but rarely manage.
The prototype’s weight (between two and three tonnes was estimated by an Audi rep) fabricated itself accepted i
n the corners. It rides on air abeyance to try and adumbrate its bulk, and while it does an accomplished job it doesn’t annihilate body-roll in its entirety.
Here’s the air-conditioned affair about its activity regen. You don’t feel like you’re accident any ‘car’ in the action of accomplishment it, and because it’s slowing the car application ambush electronics and not the brakes, you don’t absolutely charge to use them all that abundant – a benefit for the consumer, a abeyant adversity for anchor pad aftersales. Ok, you charge to acclimatize your active appearance a blow to get the best abstract per mile (if you accept hills/distances to anchor and recharge from, it doesn’t aloof actualize activity as if by magic), but if you don’t appetite to you don’t absolutely accept to.
That may complete like a antic statement, but there are some out there who anticipate electric cars crave abracadabra to pilot. They don’t, it’s aloof a bit different. Quieter, mostly, and they booty a bit best to refuel.
The Pikes Aiguille coast is long, twisty, and can abort a car’s brakes if you’re not careful. By the half-way point our car’s stoppers were air-conditioned abundant to blow because they’d been accomplishing naff all.
By the time we’d accomplished the basal of the run we’d upped the ambit to from 165km to 282km (103 to 175 miles). A solid accretion of 117km (72 miles).

From area I was sitting, the council seemed bland and accessible to use. The E-tron uses a ‘progressive steering’ set up – adjusting it to clothing the acceleration of driving. I’ve consistently begin it a bit hit and absence in added cars. Maybe it’ll assignment bigger here.
We’ll acquisition out back it’s accessible to be driven, but a abrupt acquaintance with the Audi E-Tron showed off a acute car. Loaded with tech, accessible to use and accessible to recharge – abnormally if you’ve got a big acropolis to go down…

The 2019 BMW X4 is a “sport activity coupe,” a fastback SUV that strives to combine sporty driving with crossover versatility.
The styling is a bit confusing, but the X4’s peppy 248-horsepower four-cylinder motor and crisp handling won me over.
The BMW X4 has a pretty firm ride, so it might be the best highway cruising choice.
One of the more perplexing vehicles I’ve tested at Business Insider is the BMW X6.
Back in 2015, I sampled the X6 M, a high-performance version of the vehicle, a “sport activity coupe.”
“It’s certainly the oddest segment in the motoring world, outside of ‘shooting brakes’ (two-door station wagons) and limos with hot tubs,” I wrote.
That impression has long stayed with me, even as this weird segment has grown. It was the first thing I thought about when BMW was kind enough to loan me a X4 for a week. Would this smaller, less burly version of the X6 M, this fastback revamping of the stalwart X3 SUV, strike me as strange?
As it turned out, I had a good test lined up: a 250-mile round-trip run to my daughter’s sleepaway camp in New York’s Catskills. There would be highway driving and some nice twisty, windy roads to put this sportif SUV through its paces.
That’s what these vehicles are all about. The idea is to combine crossover SUV versatility with sports-sedan styling and that whole “ultimate driving machine” vibe. I daresay, for the Bayerische Motoren Werke chariot to be all things to all people — but mainly something different from buyers who can’t accept a sedan but don’t want the stigma of an SUV.
A word on the “coupe” part of “Sport Activity Coupe.” A coupé, of course, should have just two doors, not be a convertible, and historically not be a utility vehicle. Times change, obviously. You have to abandon your allegiances to traditional automotive nomenclature. Why? Because BMW says so.
This SAC, a 2019 X4 xDrive 30i, also arrived with all-wheel-drive, which again sort of bucks the whole coupé ideal, giving life to the notion that two-doors with sporting pretensions should be rear-wheel-drive machines.
But anyway, we must address the contraption before us, and so onward. Here’s what I thought:
Behold! The 2019 BMW X4 xDrive 30i! The paint job was a handsome “Dark Graphite Metallic.” Styling? A sort of oomphed-up sedan, with a sloping fastback.
The signature BMW kidney grille dominates the front fascia.
A closer look at those bold chrome blades, framing the legendary BMW badge.
Can you spot the Hofmeister Kink? I sure can, mainly because the slope of the fastback exaggerates the rear-end design of the X6.
I mean, let’s be honest: it doesn’t look to great from behind.
Here’s the X3, the crossover SUV that’s the basis for the X4 (both are made in South Carolina, by the way).
Read the snowbound review >>
And here’s dangerous big brother, the X6 M.
Read the review >>
The X3/X4 are compact SUVs, sitting below the midsize X5.
xDrive equals all-wheel-drive! The 30i trim packs a turbocharged, 248-horsepower inline four-cylinder engine under the hood.
There’s about 30 cubic feet of cargo area under the fastback hatch …
… More than enough to handle a large suitcase and a laundry bag crammed with enough linen and sleeping bags and miscellany to get a teenager through two weeks of camp.
All BMW from the driver’s point of view: the ultimate driving machine lives on on this purposeful cockpit. The steering wheel is heated, as are the front seats.
The center console provides a decent amount of storage and a pair of cupholders. BMW’s wonky toggle shifter and the controls for the controversial but now much-improved iDrive infotainment system are also there, as is the selector for the X4’s drive modes.
There’s a large dual moonroof that let’s in abundant sunshine!
And the rear seats, while not capacious …
… Are adequately roomy. The “Tacora Red Vernasca Leather” interior, which comes with contrasting stitching, is lovely and expensive, a $1,700 extra.
Speaking of lovely, after some miserable summer weather in the Northeast, I had spectacular skies for my drive into the Catskills.
Our companion was BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. It’s been around for a while, an in the X4 is utilizes this fairly large central touchscreen.
The system isn’t the easiest to use — all the sub-trees and decision forks seem to just what the average German engineer would order — but it get the jobs done and is reliable. GPS navigation was faultless, the audio system sounds quite good and offers USB/AUX inputs as well as an old-school CD player. There’s also a small suite of apps, including a weather app that given the stormy, rainy nature of our Northeastern summer, I consulted often.
So what’s the verdict?
To be honest, I was confused in the beginning by the X4, but I warmed up to it.
I should really favor the fastback ute over its SUV counterparts, but the oddness of the X4’s shape takes a while to overcome. I like fastback sedans, after all. And there’s no question that the X3/X5 family of crossovers is quite solid. There are good reasons why people love these vehicles, combining as they do SUV capability with BMW driving DNA.
What really won me over and vanquished some memories of the X6 M’s warlike powerplant was the eager pep of the X4’s four banger and the pop it could channel through its eight-speed automatic (there are paddle shifters and a manual mode if you want to go there). The 0-60 mph sprint passes in about six seconds, and I averaged an impressive 25 mpg.
The X4 30i leans toward the sporty side of the driving equation, but it isn’t as bold as the M40i trim, which takes the ponies to 355 by swapping an inline four for a twin-turbo inline six. After a few days, I began to genuinely enjoy the X4’s tossable nature, not something I often encounter in SUVs.
The major negative I encountered was the rather stuff seats, which when paired with the rather stiff ride no matter which mode I was in, and despite a lumbar support, evoked protests from my embattled and aging lower back after a few hours on the highway. The X4’s cargo hold was up to the task of a road trip with gear, but the seats left something to be desired.
Mind you, when you chuck the X4 hard into a corner, you appreciate those seats and the crisp composure that the SAC’s suspension and chassis delivery.
All this means this vehicle is really for suburbanites who would like to stand out from the crowd and who favor more driving in their ultimate driving machines that have been designed for tasks other than driving. I can accept that.
And after a week, I embraced it.

Distracted Driving
Distracted driving might not seem like that big of a deal until you get into a car accident and severely hurt yourself or someone else. I’ve seen it as a Car Accident Lawyer. While there are all types of reasons to get distracted while driving, here are three categories of distracted driving you should be aware of.
Visual Distractions
This type of distracted driving involves taking your eyes off of the road. Even for a few seconds. These include
– Checking the kid’s seatbelts – Looking down at a mobile phone – Fiddling with a GPS tracker – Changing DVDs, CDs or the radio
While all of these situations above are considered strictly visual, mobile phone use and texting also carries over into manual and cognitive distractions.
Texting and driving is becoming a nuisance across the globe, especially in the US. According to statistics, around 660,000 drivers per day are driving and attempting to look down or text while driving.
youtube
Some cell phone statistics:
– One out of every four car accidents that happens in the US is because of texting and driving.
– Over 330,000 accidents a year are caused by driving and texting.
– 94% of drivers are FOR an overall ban of texting while driving and 74% are FOR banning any use of hand-held phones while driving.
– At least 11 teenagers die every day because of texting and driving.
Manual Distractions
This type of distracted driving deals involves person someone removing their hands from the wheel for any particular reason.
– Eating or Drinking while driving – Getting something out of their wallet or purse – Adjusting their briefcase in the other seat – Putting makeup on – *Looking down at your phone or texting – Getting dressed in the car – yes it does happen!
Let’s be clear here. When you get into a car, you shouldn’t be doing anything but driving and while it would be nice to know everyone else is following the same rules, they probably won’t be. Eating or putting on makeup should be done before getting into or after getting out of the car and yet so many people do it.
– In 2013 alone, over 3,000 people were killed due to distracted driving
– Also in 2013, 10% of all of the accidents that happened was because of distracted driving of a driver between the ages of 16 and 19.
Cognitive Distractions
A cognitive distraction is one that happens when your mind is not focused on the task at hand. Whether it’s driving, turning, stopping at a stop sign, or anything that requires your full attention. A cognitive distraction can happen if:
– Someone else in the car is talking to you – Your phone is ringing – *Texting – Daydreaming – Even having the radio up too loud can be considered a cognitive distraction
Make it a rule that if someone drives with you, they have to let you concentrate on the road. Always make sure you keep your music off or at a low level. Also turn your ringer off while in the car so you can concentrate better. Lastly, make sure that if you are traveling someplace new and using a GPS that you set it up before you take off in your car.

For those not in the know, Android One is a Google initiative to put stock Android into more consumer hands, especially those in developing markets. You may argue: What? Another derivative of Android? Isn’t it super fragmented already? Well, no and yes. Android One is the purest form of Android packaged into uber accessible devices, some as low as USD100. Yes, Android is fragmented, but Android One ensures users get the latest and most secure OS updates promptly.
In short, you get a Nexus-like Android experience and fast updates, direct from Google.
Currently, there are a dozen Android One devices: from Xiaomi’s powerful Mi A1, Moto X4 and HTC U11 Life. Aside from the mainstream brands we know and love, there’s a little known Turkish phone maker that makes affordable Android devices too—General Mobile 4G.
General Mobile made an entry to the Malaysian market in July this year with its flagship GM5 Plus smartphone. The company currently sells its devices across 30 different countries.
When it debuted at the end of 2016, the GM5 Plus was the most powerful device in the Android One lineup. That, of course, changed when Xiaomi introduced its shockingly good Mi A1. The GM5 Plus may have lost its speed crown, but as you’ll see in the review, it’s still a neat little package, even by 2017 standards.

[nextpage title=”Design + Build, Hardware, Software, Performance”]
Design + Build
Let’s start with the design. The GM5 Plus has a titanium+aluminium alloy frame and a plastic textured back. The back cover brings me back to the glory days of Samsung’s faux leather and removable plastic backs. So, the GM5 Plus comes out looking a little dated, at least from the rear.
The rear houses the rear camera module that has a pronounced bump, with the dual-LED flash unit and General Mobile logo beneath it. The Android One logo is proudly emblazoned at the bottom.
On the front, you’ll get the 5.5-inch display with respective front camera module and front-facing LED flash at the top. What you’ll notice is that there’s no physical home button. The GM5 Plus makes do with capacitive buttons, and oh, no fingerprint sensor. We’ll get to that in a bit.
I wouldn’t go as far as to call it ugly, because it isn’t. In fact, from the front and the sides, it’s pleasant-looking if generic. In fact, it reminds me of the Mi A1 from the front.
Build quality-wise, it’s surprisingly solid, and feels good in the hand. The textured back, despite my opinions of the design, gives you a good, firm grip. None of the insecure slippery feeling of some glass and metal-bodied phones today.
Tipping the scales at 160g, it’s considered fairly lightweight, while it measures 7.9mm at its thinnest point.
Overall, not bad-looking device and well put together, considering its price point.
Hardware
Now we get to the tasty bits—the myriad components that make the GM5 Plus tick. A decidedly mid-range octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 (MSM8952) powers the device. Yes, somewhat old, but don’t forget, this device came out in 2016. Qualcomm’s 600-series chips aren’t bad though, and pretty power efficient. Naturally, it won’t beat the newer SD625/630 chips found on many of today’s mid-range devices.
What’s good is a generous 3GB of RAM, and an acceptable 32GB of internal storage. There’s a hybrid SIM slot that allows you to expand storage up to 128GB via microSD.
It sports a 5.5-inch IPS LTPS FHD (1920×1280 @ 401PPI) display which is protected by Gorilla Glass 4. The display isn’t bad at all, delivering as punchy and sharp as an IPS display can.
Powering the device is a 3,100mAh built-in battery that charges up via USB Type-C. The USB Type-C is a huge plus point, and it enables Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0. QC3.0 allegedly delivers 60 percent charge in as quick as 30 minutes of charge time.
In the camera department, the GM5 Plus offers a 13MP f/2.0 main shooter with autofocus and dual-LED flash. It supports HDR and Panorama modes and is capable of shooting 1080p @ 30fps.
Selfie lovers should be quite happy with the 13MP autofocus front shooter with front-facing LED flash.
Connectivity-wise, it ticks all the right boxes. First up, support for 4.5G LTE. Yes, superfast Cat.7 which is rated at 300Mbps DL and 100Mbps UL (where supported by networks).
It also rocks Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS and as mentioned USB Type-C.
A big disappointment for me is the lack of a fingerprint sensor on the device.
Software
Software is where the GM5 Plus excels, although I wouldn’t call its hardware shabby. So, let’s talk about Android One.
The promise of Android One is two-fold. Firstly, pure stock Android. This means no custom UI layer, no fancy schmancy features you don’t need and first-to-the-mark Android updates. There’s absolutely no bloatware, and no unwanted apps.
You always run the latest version of Android, with the latest security patches. Google has assured that Android One devices will get at least two generations of Android OS updates, so expect Android Oreo to come soon.
Secondly, Android One is about affordability and accessibility. The idea is to get Android into as many hands as possible. There may be 2 billion Android devices in the market out there today, but Google wants to “spread the love” especially into developing markets.
Sure, you may argue that MYR899 (USD300) isn’t exactly “cheap” by any means, but the GM5 Plus is considered one of the top-rung Android One choices in the stable, so you get what you pay for.
As you would expect, accessing Google Assistant is as easy as holding down the Home button.
Performance
Based on daily usage of social media updates (hint: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), web browsing, emailing and watching videos, the GM5 Plus runs without complaint.
Thanks to pure stock Android, it’s responsive and snappy and switching between apps is pretty effortless too.
The display is adequately bright and crisp, and it does a pretty good job in sunlight too.
It copes well with light gaming, but crumbles when attempting to run a more intensive 3D game like Real Racing smoothly.
Moving on to battery life, the GM5 Plus returns 3-4 hours of screen on time, which is decent for an almost full day’s worth of use. While it has a slightly bigger battery than the rival Mi A1, I found the latter to have a tad better battery life.
What’s cool about the GM5 Plus is the support for Quick Charge 3.0 through General Mobile’s own GM Turbo charger. GM claims the phone can get to 60% charge in 30 minutes, however, I never got close to those speeds.
I could manage around 30% charge in 30 minutes, and a full charge took a little over two hours.
It’s still a plus that it’s got a USB Type-C port, and included in the box is a microUSB to Type-C connector.
Camera
The GM5 Plus’ 13MP main shooter is what you’d expect from a 13MP sensor. It takes decent, sufficiently sharp photos under ideal lighting conditions. Colour reproduction is not bad, and HDR mode returns pretty good results. White balance can sometimes be a little off and in general photos are a tad washy. Check out the sample photos at the end of the post.
For selfies, the 13MP front-facing camera does an OK job overall. The front-facing LED flash is a plus, and comes in handy in dimly-lit environments. A good addition is HDR support for selfies, which comes in handy when in tricky light environments. Selfies tend to lack detail and suffer the same washiness as the rear shooter.
My gripe with the camera lies with the stock Android camera app. It’s annoyingly slow in general, and the lag between shots can be rather unsettling. It’s a pretty basic camera app, although I’m more bothered by the lack of responsiveness than the dearth of features.
The other thing is the fact that the stock camera app uses cloud-based Photos to store all your shots, which can also be noticeably slow to appear once you’ve taken a shot.
This seems to afflict the stock Android Nokia 8 as well.
[nextpage title=”Pros, Cons, Verdict”]
Pros
Well-built
Affordable, value-for-money
Quick Charge 3.0 support
Fast 4.5G LTE
USB Type-C
Stock Android, no bloatware, fast updates
Bright and crisp display
Cons
Dated design
Laggy camera performance
Quick charging not as quick as advertised
No fingerprint sensor
Average battery life
Annoying black borders on display
Pricing and availability
The GM5 Plus retails for MYR899 and is available through its main distributor KWS Distribution as well as online channels. Head over to www.generalmobile.com and www.shop.kws.my.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a stock Android experience on a budget, then the GM5 Plus may be a good option for you. It’s well put together and has acceptable mid-range specs for the price.
It undercuts its closest competitor, the Mi A1 by MYR200, and in this price-sensitive segment, that’s going to be a key factor in making a purchase decision.
There are several niggling faults and the absence of a fingerprint sensor is a huge trade-off. If you insist on the fingerprint sensor, then you’ll have to look at the GM6.
Overall, a neat package that’ll give you a pure stock Android experience for under MYR1,000.

Dossier shows Democrat, Russian collusion; no proof of Trump gossip
For over a year, the Hillary Clinton campaign, other Democrats and liberal pundits have pummeled President Trump and his men with one main weapon: a dossier. Written by former British spy Christopher Steele, who was paid by opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which received the money from the Clinton campaign, the 35 pages of memos became the Democrats’ vehicle to promote supposed Trump–Russia…
