This is a point that you need to consider even if you hire refrigerated trucks for the shipment. These trucks are certainly not enough to keep your items safe and secure. So, look for the best insulating packaging supplies while also making sure that they weigh less. This is a great way to safeguard your perishable foods.
Using Thick Insulated Foam Containers
You should use insulated food containers to ship your frozen foods. Always remember that you should use the best-quality insulation for your containers to be safe and secure. You should start with small containers and cover them properly with insulated padding.
Packing With Dry Ice
At the time of packing your frozen foods for transportation, get them ready with dry ice, which is nothing but solid carbon dioxide. It is meant to cool things or items down while sublimating at -109.2 degrees Fahrenheit. When it comes to handling dry ice, make sure that you use special gloves in order to avoid harming yourself.
However, you don’t have to follow all these things if you hire a refrigerated truck for the shipment process. They are the perfect frozen goods transport in Brisbane!

A Brisbane court on Friday ruled that RFG breached Australian Consumer Law by making misleading representations to Frederick and Karen Guirguis about the quality, range and frequency of delivery of products from Brisbane to Townsville. It also found RFG engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct by not informing the couple before signing the contract of financial troubles at Brisbane based bakery supplier Dyson, which went into liquidation shortly before they opened their store in May 2012.That meant rather than the 1400km journey from Brisbane, the frozen cakes had to be shipped all the way from Sydney by truck a journey of more than 2000km often arriving in poor condition.the cakes are going to be just cooked and then put in the plane freezer, I not interested at all because that going to have an after freezer taste, Mr Guirguis recalled telling the RFG representative. In his evidence, he claimed he was told: it snap frozen and when we defrost it, it tastes like it was good that very morning, and they be transporting the goods up in freezer trucks as well. Court heard how within weeks of the Townsville store opening, Mrs Guirguis noticed the cakes were arriving damaged, defrosted and spoiled.Special order birthday cakes frequently arrived late or not at all.now our large cakes take way too long to get to our store, we can have icing sugar, cream or photos on the cakes, Ms Guirguis wrote in an email to RFG in July 2012.arrive thawed out and most (I have all the photos to prove this) of the cakes, small and large, arrive in a poor state so bad that most can NOT be sold. Also as I have stated before some of your products are just too dry and we get a lot left on the plate or returned. Yes, this reminds me for Elizabeth Holmes/Theranos and even smaller grifters like Casey Anthony. They will trap themselves in a cycle of lying, cheating, and stealing to get money, then having to lie to cover up their previous lies, such that they are actually "working" harder, in a way, to keep up their life of crime than they would be if they 경상북도출장샵 just finished college and got a normal job! At least with an honest 9 to 5 you get some downtime. These people had to always be scrambling to stay one step ahead of disaster.. Humans are quite irrational when it comes to human quality of life, defaulting to "living is always the better option." Consider that we will keep a human alive artificially even when there is no actual person "inside," and no 경상북도출장샵 chance of them ever recovering. The Terry Schavio case got a lot of attention in the US over this. Consider that there are people in pro life movements who try to outlaw the "ending" of a human life before it even is a human life yet. Perhaps you're accustomed to using eye shadow and eyeliner to attract attention to the eye, but the mascara will prove to be a more useful tool as you age. Though all skin gets slack and wrinkled with age, this phenomenon is particularly noticeable on the eyelids because the skin is already so thin. These crepey eyelids make it difficult for older women to wear shimmers or metallics on their eyes these products can draw attention to the creases. That would be so fun to see implemented in a limited basis. Keep most of the things the same like the ball, hoop height, rules, etc. But allow courts to change distances for free throws and threes and maybe even length and width of the court within certain limitations. Initial symptoms of a MRSA infection can include a red, swollen or painful skin inflammation and a fever; the sore spot may feel warm to the touch or develop pus. The CDC says anyone who experiences symptoms should wash and bandage the area and see a doctor. MRSA can be life threatening if the infection spreads to the bloodstream or into the lungs, causing pneumonia.

Grease proof papers.
Greaseproof paper sheets Brisbane is paper that is impermeable to oil or grease and is normally used in cooking or food packaging.
Also, the Greaseproof is Microwaveable and Biodegradable and is produced by refining the paper stock. It is super-calendared to improve the density, creating Glassine paper. This sheet is passed between hard pressure rollers to further increase the density, creating a paper called glassine.
The Greaseproof is breathable, which keeps wrapped bread fresh and less soggy by letting steam and moisture escape. This is perfect for the likes of Hot Dogs, Pizza slices, soft-shelled tacos, Tortilla Chips, Popcorn, etc.
Greaseproof paper sheets for packaging
This paper is used to protect and secure items during shipping, like fine artwork or perishable items, especially things manufactured with a “grease” coating to protect from rusting.
It is often used as an inter-leaver between frozen meats and as a protective layer on textiles. While other uses being Pet-food bags, pan liners and release papers for floor tiles, and graphic papers.
Star Stuff Group oil and grease-resistant papers have a wide range of applications in the food packaging industry.
They are intended and certified for direct food contact. Common use cases include food service wraps, and laminating with other materials where paper serves as one of the functional layers of a composite packaging.
Greaseproof papers are eco-friendly
Many fast-growing food services are switching from traditional disposables and food service products to eco-friendly options.
Greaseproof papers are biodegradable products that break down naturally, they eventually decompose and are consumed by soil and other natural components. Using more of these products in food packaging or wrapping will save our environment.
Star Stuff Group can adjust the parameters of their paper, convert, print, and wrap the rolls or sheets to suit your needs. They will assist you with the deployment and help you discover new applications. They will also demonstrate compliance with safety regulations and good manufacturing practices to meet legislative and customs requirements.
You can reuse greaseproof paper sheets
All bakers love baking with parchment paper. Many use it to line baking sheets and cake pans, and to transport bread dough to and from our Dutch ovens. Coated in silicone, parchment paper allows finished cookies, cakes, and bread to release easily, without sticking.
It is safe to reuse parchment, reducing your waste and cost per bake!
As long as the parchment itself isn’t too messy, you can use it for at least another round in the oven. Avoid reusing parchment that has gotten overly greasy, messy, or wet with anything that might burn on a second trip through the heat—that won’t improve the flavor of your food.
I have found out that we could make at least five batches of cookies on a single sheet of parchment with no sticking.
You can also reuse most parchment with recipes baked at higher temperatures because parchment degrades faster at higher temperatures. Two uses are about the maximum, and it is recommended sticking a four- to five-inch-wide sling of aluminum foil under it to help support the dough on the second use.

New Post has been published on https://travelonlinetips.com/9-ways-to-experience-queenslands-food-culture/
9 ways to experience Queensland’s food culture
Pack your taste buds, Queensland is calling. We’re a state with a five-star dining scene in the city, and an even better one in the country.
But if you’re looking for a food experience that goes beyond a sit-down meal, why not hunt, gather or prepare your own with this guide to some of the essential ingredients in Queensland’s food culture.
Hunt mode: Queensland’s must-try protein produce
1. Coral Trout
Line caught and damn difficult to catch, there is more to know about coral trout than its speckled orange exterior.
This fish, while not endemic to Queensland might as well be, inhabiting most parts of the Great Barrier Reef.
Coral trout hunt the World Heritage-listed icon with a piscivorous diet of prawns and other reef fish, which explains their sweet flavour profile when the hunter finally becomes the hunted.
Catching this fighting fish is quite a task and entirely weather dependent, which is why you’ll mostly find coral trout as ‘fish of the day’ rather than a menu staple across the state.
If you’re not planning on visiting the outer reef to line catch it, try it for yourself at these seafood restaurants:
2. Spanner Crab
Riddle us this, what crab is an apex predator that only swims in the crystal-clear waters of Fraser Island and Mooloolaba?
Spanner crabs – the crustacean cousin of the mud crab and sand crab, which proudly sports even sweeter flesh thanks to its diet of scallops and prawns.
This red crustacean is the definition of evolution, built with thin nippers for slicing open scallop shells.
Unlike other crabs in the family, this one is endemic to Queensland – available cooked and raw from the trawlers in Mooloolaba and served at fine dining restaurants across the state, such as Wasabi and Sum Yung Guys.
3. Organic Beef
The thing about Outback Queensland is that it’s big. So big in fact you don’t even need fences to keep your cattle in or use chemicals to keep the weeds at bay.
Head to Channel Country to see what 25 years of organic farming looks like and the three-million hectares of grazing land owned by the Brook family (who incidentally run the Birdsville Races), who pioneered OBE Beef.
OBE Beef turns its channel country challenges into an advantage, with some 40,000+ head of cattle basking in its remote conditions on any given day – seasoned only by nature, rather than pesticides and tick treatments.
For city slickers, hunting OBE Beef is easy. Just visit your local organic butcher and ask if their stock is OBE or pay a visit to Three Blue Ducks inside the W Brisbane to try it in brisket form.
Gather mode: Queensland’s best fruit and vegetable produce
4. Mango
You’d be wrong to think the Great Barrier Reef is the Whitsundays’ most famous face.
Bowen mangoes even pip Whitehaven Beach to the post, with the wider-region responsible for producing some 3,812,102 trays of mangoes each year.
Eat the juicy fruit across the region available by the caseload from stalls, frozen at Bowen’s own frosty mango or on dessert menus across the state.
Pssst – if you’re mad for mangoes, don’t forget to take a photo at the Big Mango in Bowen too.
5. Davidson Plum
If you prefer your fruit on the sour-side and definitely not found in supermarkets, a trip to the Daintree Rainforest will reveal a whole new world of fructose.
Wrap your laughing gear around a Davidson Plum, a favourite fruit of the southern cassowary who makes short work of this purple skinned fruit.
Move over acai berries, the Davidson Plum could soon become the next superfood, rich in potassium, Vitamin E and zinc; aka the nutrients required for glowing skin.
Sure, eating it eu natural is more like devouring a lemon, but mix it through ice-cream like they do at the Daintree Ice Cream Company and you’ll have yourself some of the best sorbet this side of Italy and none of the acidic taste.
6. Macadamia nuts
Name a more iconic duo than Queensland and macadamias? We’ll wait.
Queensland’s southern parts are prime growing conditions for the national nut with hot, humid conditions and rainfall to keep this fickle nut perfectly hydrated in its green outer shell.
For a holiday to go nuts about, why not stay on a working macadamia farm? Check into Greenlee Cottages and make a weekend out of fossicking for a salt-roasted snack, following this itinerary.
Prepare mode: Queensland’s best food experiences
7. Spirit House
Prepare to be instantly transported to Thailand the minute you cross the threshold of Spirit House, whose landscaped gardens are about as famous as the food of this award-winning regional restaurant.
What’s better than a degustation? Learning how to make one for yourself at their onsite cooking school.
Across four hours, you’ll learn the basics of south-east Asian cooking and leave with an instant dinner party under your belt.
Themed lessons cater to every level of chef, with the likes of entry-level Vietnamese and Fab-Fast Thai meals to Seafood Banquets and Asian Entertaining on their weekly cooking school roster.
8. Cultural Habitat Tour
You won’t find the equipment you need for this fishing expedition at your local BCF store. Join Brandon and Lync Walker for a Cultural Habitat Tour through the mangroves and mudflats of Port Douglas.
Armed with a spear, you’ll go hunting for mud crabs just as the Kuku Yalanji people have done for thousands of years before hand.
This experience is so good, it ranks in our list of best Indigenous tours in Tropical North Queensland.
9. Bundaberg Rum blend-your-own rum experience
Take your mixology to the next level with a visit to the Bundaberg Distillery and learn to mix your own rum.
In just over 60 minutes, you’ll learn the art of tasting rum from the barrel before blending your own personal drop.
This guided tour finishes with take home treats too – two of your very own personalised 700mL bottles.
For more top drops, check out Queensland’s best micro-distilleries over here.
What’s your favourite food experience in Queensland?

Morning Links: Uber scoots into Hollywood, anachronistic bikes, and Nov. closure of San Gabriel River path
So this happened yesterday.
Uber has apparently made the long migration east from their new Santa Monica base to the wilds of Hollywood.
Or maybe someone just took a long ride and left one here on the sidewalk near my home.
The tag on the e-scooter, which you can read by clicking the photo below, promises up to five free one-half hour rides per day through October 28th using the Uber app.
Hopefully, if the Uber scooters really have finally made their long-promised entry into the LA scooter wars, that means Uber’s popular JUMP ebike bikeshare will soon follow.
………
Last Friday, we mentioned the frozen antique bicycle which had unexpectedly emerged from the snowy slopes of the Italian Alps. Not far from where Ötzi, the 5,000-year old frozen caveman, had emerged from his own glacial grave in 1991.
Leading to the obvious and inescapable conclusion that it might be his bike.
If obvious and inescapable can be read to mean ludicrous and anachronistic.
Yet Marvin Davis has forwarded proof, of a sort, that it may be possible after all.
Which leads us to today’s discovery of what happens when you abbreviate the year in a multi-day Google Search.
Only to discover the odd fact that not one story about bicycles was published online on Tuesday or Wednesday’s date in 18 AD.
Go figure.
………
Long Beach Mobility & Healthy Living Programs Officer Michelle Mowery sends word of yet another one-day closure of the San Gabriel River Bike Path next month.
The path will be closed from 8 am to 5 pm on Wednesday, November 14th between 2nd Street and 7th Street (California State Highway 22) for additional work by the LA Department of Public Works.
So mark your calendar, and plan on another route that day.
………
No bias here.
An indignorant writer for a Kiwi website complains about the “massive amounts of taxpayer and ratepayer money” to give supposedly freeloading bike riders “an advantage over motorists who have to pay their own way in life.”
Don’t get me wrong, recreational cycling on purpose-built cycleways, especially out in the country, is an admirable pursuit, but cycling is not a practical means of transport, and the amount of other people’s money thrown at cycling infrastructure is totally disproportionate to the number of cyclists using it.
If the cost of cycleways and special cycle lanes was reflected in a tax on new bicycles each one would cost its purchaser at least $50,000.
Never mind that the total cost of a painted bike lane runs around $50,000 a mile in the US. So evidently, he’s assuming that every bike lane will be used by just one person per mile.
Period.
He goes on to complain about a planned walkway over the Aukland harbor, insisting it will become a death trap for people on foot as spandex-clad bike riders hit speeds of 55 mph on the downhill slope.
Because that’s just what we all do.
………
Local
Santa Monica Mountains Cyclery shares a photo of a bike thief who made off with a bike from a Norwalk shop.
State
San Francisco bike riders will be wearing wigs and sensible heels this weekend to protest Prop 6. And those are just the men, including State Sen. Scott Wiener.
Modesto is planning a new road diet to calm traffic on one of the city’s most dangerous streets; previous road diets have actually improved traffic flow for drivers. Which is probably why Modesto NIMBYs and traffic safety deniers aren’t rising up in revolt, unlike the privileged drivers in a certain SoCal city we could name.
National
Bicycling offers tips on how to dress for cold winter weather, including LA’s frigid 60° temps. And explains how riding a bike can give you a healthier gut.
Meanwhile, the great bike helmet debate goes on, as a writer for Bicycling says it’s okay to not wear a helmet, adding they can help protect against some injuries, but safer streets and drivers help more.
Good idea. A Colorado Springs CO advocacy group is offering classes for people who want to learn how to drive safely around bike riders.
An Estes Park writer suggests bicycling as a practical solution to the Colorado tourist town’s chronic traffic and parking problems.
Anyone can ride across the country. A Texas man is riding in a heart shape through 13 states to show his love for the US, and see for himself how divided the country is.
A Louisville KY woman explains how mansplainers nearly made her quit bicycling, until she gave up on the trails and started riding in the local cemetery. Seriously, when it comes to advice, be a well, not a fountain; if people want advice, they’ll usually ask for it. Although someone should tell her that calling out “on your left” is a courtesy to help avoid confusion and crashes, even if some riders treat it like more of a command.
Still more from Bicycling, as they explain how a sub-seven-mile Memphis bike lane helped transform the city, which preceded Los Angeles as a two-time loser as America’s worst city for bicycling. So maybe there’s hope for us yet.
A Pittsburgh website profiles a paraplegic rockstar, author and record-setting handcyclist.
At a time when it seems like no one is behind the wheel in Washington, it could soon be literally true.
DC will try slow zones and banning right turns at some red lights to improve safety, as the mayor attempts to reset the city’s Vision Zero; traffic deaths have already exceeded the total for all of last year.
International
An automotive website considers when carmakers make bikes. I’ll take the Pashley Morgan, thank you.
Seriously, don’t be that guy. A bike raging London bicyclist caused nearly $2,000 in damage by slamming his bike onto the hood of a chauffeured limo. No matter what a driver might have done, violence is never the answer, tempting though it may be.
No bias here, either. A British radio host takes London’s DOT-equivalent to task for not implementing a harebrained plan to let drivers use one of the city’s cycle superhighways at non-peak hours. It should come as no surprise that his last name is Ferrari.
An English town saw a 200% increase in bicycling after they banned cars from the city center.

Truk Lagoon – what you need to know before you go
Dive Truk Lagoon – #DiveplanitBucketlist No. 3
It would be fair to say that diving Truk Lagoon would be every tech diver’s dream – but you don’t have to be a tech diver or necessarily have a lust for rust to enjoy diving Truk Lagoon. Here’s our guide to the best way to dive Truk Lagoon, the right time to visit, what you’ll see and a variety of accommodation/liveaboard options.
Truk Lagoon (also referred to as Chuuk Lagoon) has one of the highest concentrations of wrecks, enclosed in a relatively small lagoon. Though most of the wrecks were Japanese transports (“Maru”), they hide a variety of cargos, and there are also submarines, tenders and planes. Many extend to depths beyond 40 metres – considered the limit for recreational divers – but there is still plenty to see at sensible depths, and much of it is covered in colourful coral. As experienced by Craig Taylor who kindly provided the photos for this page from his recent trip to Blue Lagoon Resort – which you should read about too!
Before you go
Truk has an interesting climate. The day time temperature is around 30°C / 87°F, every day, and the average night time temperature 25°C / 76°F, every night. It rains (at some point during the day) on about 218 days every year, which means it rains two out of every three days and there are, on average, six hours of sunshine every day. In summary, it’s sunny half the time, raining two thirds of the time and hot, hot, hot! all the time. But that’s ok because you’ll be diving most of the time.
Despite its great climate, like much of Micronesia, Truk is not renowned for its culinary delights. There are no verdant fields, lush meadows or cool, vine covered slopes, so apart from a few fresh (tropical) fruits and veggies, everything is shipped in vacuum-packed, frozen, dried, canned or bottled. (There’s a tax on food, and a higher – 50% tax – on alcoholic drinks).
Another thing about Truk – it’s a wee bit remote. Which means that when things break, or replacement parts are required, or you forget to bring something, often you can’t just pop down to the local hardware store/dive equipment shop/drug store/7-Eleven to get the thing you – or the boat/hotel/liveaboard operator – needs. And sometimes you need to live with that.
Getting There
The best way to fly to Truk Lagoon from Australia is with Air Niugini via Port Moresby. There are excellent air fares on the weekends flying outside of the peak periods (i.e., not anywhere near school holidays or other public holidays). Return including taxes, and 30 Kgs all the way, out on a Saturday, back on a Sunday, you can find fares from:
Brisbane for less than AUD 799
Sydney for less than AUD 899
Cairns for less than AUD 999
And don’t think Air Niugini is some second rate airline – they have a large fleet of modern, efficient Fokkers.
The best way to get to Truk from the US is with United on a flight that also stops off at Guam.
(Note: there is currently a USD 30 (cash) Departure Tax on leaving Truk)
Stay / Dive Packages
There are plenty of options to choose from, including a resort, a floating hotel, and two liveaboards – described briefly below.
Here are some examples for on a 7 night stay, per person based on double occupancy and including sales tax (5%), Dive Permit (USD 50) and transfers.
Blue Lagoon Resort: 7 nights / 21 dives / no meals: USD 1656
SS Thorfinn: E-Plan: 7 nights / 21 dives / full board: USD 2355
Truk Master: 7 nights / 21+ dives / full board: USD 3145
Truk Odyssey: 7 nights / 21+ dives / full board & drinks inc. alcohol / Nitrox: USD 3615
Blue Lagoon Resort
The Blue Lagoon Resort (BLR) has 54 spacious, air-conditioned rooms across two levels, all with a lagoon facing balcony. A selection of Pacific and Asian themed meals are served in the airy, air-conditioned dining room. You can meander through the palm shaded gardens to the white sand beach for a refreshing swim in the clear lagoon.
BLR has number of boats catering for all kinds of divers from Tec to Rec and drops small groups on different wrecks throughout the day to ensure there’s no crowding and everyone gets a great dive in good vis.
SS Thorfinn
The SS Thorfinn is a floating hotel using two tenders to deliver divers to the scattered dive sites. The Thorfinn has 10 cabins, 7 with private bathroom and three with shared facilities. The guest lounge is equipped with a Plasma TV with DVD player, a CD player with iPod connection, and surround sound speakers. The dive schedule allows for 5 dives per day, and the Thorfinn caters well for tec and CCR divers.
The Truk Odyssey
The Truk Odyssey is a liveaboard that does a circuit of the lagoon over the 7 day trip, mooring close to each of the wrecks, so that practically all of the diving is done from the mothership. At 40m long and with just nine Staterooms, each is commensurately generous, and comes with private bathrooms and individual air conditioning control in each cabin.
During the 7 day trip, there are six days of diving, with up to 5 dives a day. The meals are served buffet style in the dining area with views to both sides, and includes all beverages – beer, wine, and distilled spirits. There’s also a spacious entertainment centre and sun deck.
Truk Master
Built of steel, the Truk Master is the newest liveaboard to ply the waters of Truk Lagoon, welcoming aboard 16 guests for 7 or 10 night Truk Lagoon dive safaris. Four decks provide ample space for relaxation, dive equipment and camera preparation, whilst the experienced crew ensures dive guest receive a high service level throughout the trip.
The Truk Master schedules three dives each day plus a dusk or night dive with diving taking place directly from the boat’s dive deck and rear platform.
Beyond Truk
If you do have a lust for rust, and want to see some really big stuff – including a 270m/888ft long aircraft carrier complete with aircraft – then the Marshall Islands and Bikini Atoll is the place to go. Bikini Atoll is where the Americans tested the impact of their nuclear bombs on a ‘mock’ naval fleet – a collection of damaged ships (and planes) of all kinds from the US, Japanese and US fleets. As well as the wrecks themselves, most have become artificial reefs and are home to prolific marine life.
The Truk Master offers 11 to 14 night itineraries (download a sample here) from Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands which includes diving on the Prinz Eugen, a German heavy cruiser at Kwajalein Atoll, the wrecks of Bikini Atoll, and Majuro.
Note that as most wrecks at Bikini Atoll extend beyond recreational depth limits, this particular itinerary is recommended only for technical divers with previous wreck experience.
When to go
Given the relatively consistent climate, the best time to go is when there’s availability with your selected operator and away from holiday times when cheap flights are available.
What are you waiting for – enquire now with your travel window – and we’ll get you some fully priced options.
If you liked this post, you might also like Bucket List #1 – Palau or Bucket List #2 – The Maldives.

Brisbane
It’s been a while since I’ve written anything mildly creative or insightful. So, let’s see how this goes.
On May 16, I left Philadelphia, en route to LAX. Prior to boarding, I stuffed my face at the Centurion Lounge (my favorite place on earth). The flight was uneventful. My layover at LAX, which seemed like a good idea prior to departure, was unnecessarily long. I spent about 7 hours at the airport - some in the KAL lounge. Our flight was delayed in boarding, so we didn’t end up getting on the plane until after midnight. Then, we were delayed further by some passenger who didn’t get on the flight. Whatever. In the end, it all worked out because the seat in the middle of our row was empty, which allowed me to stretch out a bit for the 14 hour journey. In the end, it was an okay flight. I ate too many kit kats (provided by Qantas), and I got a little rest. When I landed, I found out that I passed the bar, so that was sweet.
After landing in Brisbane, I purchased a gocard, which is their local transit card, then made my way via train and bus to the Airbnb. After a quick shower and dropping my bags, I headed to the Lone Pine koala reserve, about any hour or so south of the city, again via public bus. It should be noted that I spent a shitton of money on public transit. Nothing is cheap here, not even the buses. In just a few days, I’ve spent close to $50 on bus transit, which would be impossible in the states.
Anyway, the koala reserve was really nice. In addition to the koalas, they have other wildlife, including kangaroos, which you can pet! They also had a few barnyard animals, lots of birds, and some reptiles. They had a duckbilled platypus exhibit, which was pretty cool. In addition to the ticket to get in, I paid a lot to hold a koala for 10 seconds. It was totally worth it.
Mom suggested that I celebrate my bar passage by getting some oysters, which was both a good and bad idea. It was good because I love oysters. It was bad because I ended up taking a bus to bumblefuck nowhere - a part of town called Balmoral. There was a giant wholesale fish market there, as well as a small cafe open to the public. I got a dozen oysters, inhaled them, then realized I was still hungry because it was after 3 pm and I hadn’t eaten yet. So, I went back inside and ordered a fried lunch menu, which was basically fish, calamari, and some weird fish stick thing, along with fries. Only as I watched them fry the frozen items did I realize that I’d made a huge mistake. Anyway, I ate some of it, then tossed it. For once, I didn’t finish everything on my plate.
Then, I proceeded to go back to wait for the bus. Because I’m a genius, I didn’t check the bus schedule in advance. Spoiler: it only comes once an hour to that part of town. I ended up sitting at the bus stop for the better part of an hour while the sun went down. My phone was close to dead, so I was pretty sure that I was going to get murdered. The sun sets here at 6 pm. It was getting quite dark by then.
Once I got on the bus, I thought I was home free. I wasn’t. Google Maps thought that a ferry stop was open, which wasn’t. So, I proceeded to get lost. After a while, I finally found an active ferry stop, with a charging port! My phone was saved, and so was I.
After an exciting day, I went to bed around 7 pm.
On Day 2 - Saturday - I headed to the Davies’ farmers market. Apparently, neighborhood markets are a big thing here on the weekends. I had a breakfast of a thing called “roesty,” which is basically hashbrowns. I got them with a red salsa on top. I then purchased some veggies for snacks.
All of my activities are interspersed with a healthy amount of sitting. Because I’d spent SO MUCH FUCKING MONEY on Brisbane public transit on Day 1, I decided to walk everywhere on Day 2. Brisbane isn’t actually that large, so walking works well. The river winds through downtown Brisbane, which makes travel a bit of a nuisance. You either have to walk the long way around the river on one bank and cross at a bridge, or take the ferry. All in all, it just makes for longer transit times.
The farmer’s market was awesome. It was in a part of town called West End, which is supposed to be a bohemian area, but it’s probably too refined to actually be considered bohemian.
After the market, I headed back to the cultural center area of town, which houses the Brisbane library, as well as the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery. The art galleries are free to the public, with the exception of the special exhibits. There’s also a natural history museum in the area that I didn’t make it to. The museums were really nice and had a nice selection of artists. They also had excellent bathrooms, which I made use of.
I sunned myself a fair amount before embarking on the long walk home. Travelling is tiring, particularly when you’re jetlagged.
By the time I got back to the Airbnb around 5 pm, I was dead tired. I booked a room in a house in an area of the city called New Farm. The houses here are super cool. I’m not sure what architectural style they would be classified as, but a majority of them are old-school in style, something of a mix between Victorian and carpenter style, with most of the main entrances on the second floor of the house. My airbnb came with two cats, neither of which wanted petting as much as I wanted to give it. The host, Tess, only appeared on Day 2. She was kind enough to invite me out, but I went to bed at 6 pm.
Day 3 started at 5 am when the birds outside the window started singing at the top of their lungs. The bird calls here are unlike anything I’ve ever heard. So, I got up, showered, packed, and went to another market, this time near the City Botanic Gardens. For breakfast, I got a nutella crepe (so bad! yet so good...). Then, I walked around the botanic garden and listened to podcasts. It was very relaxing, but also pretty boring.
I’m heading up to an area called the Sunshine Coast today to visit my friend, Shanie, who I met on safari in South Africa. I’m ready to see Australia with a local, and I’m also starting to feel that I should plan out my travels a bit more. I’m considering booking a few tours, etc. Australia is such a massive country, and since I don’t have a car, I need to figure out a cost-effective way of getting to see as much of it as possible. It seems like a tour might be my best bet.
Some general observations from my first few days:
Shit’s expensive here. Everything is pricey. Like, US prices or more. I don’t know how people afford it.
It’s a lot more ethnically heterogeneous than I expected. Not everyone is blond (thanks, Hollywood).
People are exceptionally friendly. When I got lost, I asked a girl in a park for directions, after dark. She wasn’t freaked out at all. I would’ve been.
I don’t feel like I need more time in Brisbane proper. There’s a lot to see outside of the city, and I think I’m going to focus on seeing that. Here’s to spending a shitton of money on transportation!
