Old Bones
"Old age ain't no place for sissies"
A quote Luigi remembers hearing his Grandfather say when he was a child. It was uttered whenever he or Mario complained about not being old enough for something or other. For example; a ride at Coney Island they were too small for or a movie with too high a rating. It was a quote from Bette Davis, and his Grandfather had a cushion with it embroidered on the front in swirling letters.
"It's true,"
His Grandfather used to say to him, "Once-a you get to my age il mio ragazzo you will understand that."
And Luigi DID understand it, very well in fact.
But, as he looked over at his wizened husband sitting next to him on the couch, spectacles on the end of Bowser's snout as he squinted at the book in his hand, Luigi felt a little braver to face old age with him by his side.
That is, until he stood up to go to the kitchen to make them both a fresh cup of tea and he felt his back click in several uncomfortable places.
"Ack!"
Bowser looked up at the noise, placing his book down on the coffee table in front of him, to see Luigi rubbing his back and grimacing. Bowser gave a small sigh and sympathetic smile before reaching over and placing his large hand on Luigi's back.
"You alright my love?" He asked as he began to gently rub his husband's back.
Luigi turned slightly to face Bowser and gave him a small, slightly pained smile.
"All fine, just-a the aching bones my Nonno used to warn me about."
Bowser gave a small chuckle, causing the laughter lines at the sides of his eyes to become more apparent. Then shifted slightly on the couch so that he was sat fairly upright with his legs uncrossed. All the while keeping his hand on Luigi's back. Once he had fully readjusted, he looked back at Luigi and patted his lap.
"I was going to make-a some more tea for us."
"You can in a minute," Bowser softly replied and once again patted his lap.
Luigi gave a small huff, but walked over to sit on Bowser's lap.
Once he was sat down, Bowser places both of his hands on Luigi's shoulders and began to rub small circles with his thumbs. A contented hum escaped Luigi's lips has he relaxed into the massage, letting all his muscles go slack against Bowser's large, capable hands.
Bowser was careful to mind his claws as he moved from Luigi's shoulders to the nape of his neck, continuing the small circular motion. At this Luigi's head fell back as far as his old bones would allow, and Bowser took the opportunity to kiss the top of his husband's head and smell his graying hair.
From there, Bowser began to work down Luigi's spine, being extra careful and massaging with slow movements. Once he had reached the bottom of Luigi's spine, Bowser placed one last kiss on his husband's head before leaning back into the couch and bringing Luigi with him.
Luigi repositioned himself in Bowser's lap and took the Koopa's hands into his own. Smiling as he stroked the top of Bowser's hand, admiring the scales on his knuckles. They were still so strong, even after all these years. Luigi then took note of his own hands as he continued to stroke Bowser's.
His withering hands; the tendons more visible, the sunspots along his fingers from years of sun damage, his blue veins beginning to peak through soft skin.
A small pang of sadness entered his heart like frost on an early spring morning.
" Old age ain't no place for sissie"
Bowser noticed the sudden sadness in Luigi's eyes and the way he had started to pinch at the skin of his wrist. Bowser turned his hand over so that he was now hording Luigi's and gave it a small squeeze.
"They're beautiful" He said. Luigi looked up into Bowser's eyes, the sadness still lingering in his own.
"Your hands," Bowser continued, "I've always loved your hands. Such amazing hands, they've done so much. They've comforted my children, they've made multiple decades worth of delicious food, they've grown huge plants out of bulbs... but the most amazing thing they've done is... God I've gotten so sappy in my old age... they touched my heart when I thought no one's could."
Bowser was blushing like a smitten teenager with that last confession, but Luigi was beaming up at him with so much love he thought his heart would burst. Luigi leaned up and placed a hand on his blushing mess of a husband's face and kissed him with as much love as he could.
Bowser had already thought that he could never get enough of his Italian's kisses, but this one took the cake. He closed his eyes and melted into the tidalwave of love and adoration.
"And-a now," Luigi said as he stood up with a new wave of energy, "these wonderful hands are going to make-a you a nice cup of tea" and with that he left Bowser, still as red as a tomatoes, to head to the kitchen.
(Sorry for any spelling mistakes, blame my dyslexia. Also, thank you to @penbwl for giving me a fic idea)

Unused sprites for “frost” versions of a few regular enemies found in the data of Paper Mario: a Frost Goomba, a Frost Koopa and a Frost Pokey. These were likely meant to supplement the enemy lineup in the ice-themed Chapter 7 before being replaced with mostly original enemies.

Back again to paint the final picture of Koopa Week, it's Bowser Junior for Day 9! Nothing beats chilling on a couple floating blocks with your Brush Buddy! ^w^
Not wanting his Brush Buddy to get discouraged over his lower skill level, Junior made the most brilliant suggestion: Portal Practice! The two of them would make their way from Bowser's Castle to Mama Peach's, using only Dal's paint portals. Dal did once tell him that the bigger the distance, the harder it is for Dal to make an accurate jump. No better way to train than to just make the leap anyway, right?
...Needless to say, Dal is going to give the Frost Glacier a wide, wide berth for a while. At least, until he gets his hands on the appropriate clothing. But a cold mountain is no big deal, Junior's dealt with worse! ...His words, not Dal's.
Half a dozen jumps later, the two Koopas have finally made it within Mushroom Kingdom borders. Peach's Castle is nearly in sight! But despite the excitement of the journey, Dalex needs to take a break. He's never jumped that many times in one day, after all! Junior gets it; he'd never admit it, but making those portals on Isle Delfino could tire him out at times, too! Not anymore though, he's gotten way better with it.
"And you will too, Dally! Then we could go play anywhere we want!"
The kid's enthusiasm was infectious, wasn't it? X3

Here's a story I like very much. It has nothing to do with my Tumblr topics, but it's a lot of fun and has sequels.
It's a Superboy story based off the comics and the Young Justice cartoon.
Superboys - Part One
Archive Of Our Own
https://archiveofourown.org/works/19248841/chapters/45773932
I've included a few excerpts in the rest of this post.
Excerpt 1: Halloween Decisions
"But I think you would look lovely as a French maid!" Lex says to Clark.
"I am not cross-dressing this Halloween," Clark says for the tenth time.
"Fine. We could go as a real life couple. Intrepid reporters, Clark Kent and Lois Lane! I'll be Clark of course, and—"
"No, Lex."
"Or we could be Disney Princes. I'll go as Prince Charming and you as Prince Eric."
"That is the best you've come up with all morning. But still, no."
"I could be Koopa and you could be Mario."
"A little on the nose, don't you think."
"Well, yes, if Lois went as Peach and Jimmy went as the little mushroom fellow."
"Who would be Luigi?"
"Bruce, I suppose, but I hear he's going as the Phantom of the Opera. I know! I could be the Lone Ranger and you could be—"
"—Tonto?"
"No, Silver."
"Geez, Lex you are so bad at this. It's a good thing I agreed to marry you before we started dating."
"We're dating? I thought we were skipping that part."
"What about Ghostbusters? Then we could tease Bruce in his Phantom costume and hit him with NERF darts."
"Pass. I refuse to dress up as anything Bill Murray was in. Brilliant actor, but antithesis of sexy."
"We could always be Power Rangers."
"What is that. Some kind of video game? Oh, that's right! Those new Justice League members I keep hearing about!"
"No, Lex. It's a children's television show."
"Doesn't ring a bell."
"They made a movie recently?"
"Nope."
"Jon Lane is obsessed with them."
"I thought he was obsessed with Transformers. Did I get him the wrong gift?"
"No, I mean, yes, he loves Transformers, but Power Rangers have these robot dinosaurs and—"
"—Oh, the Megazord! I thought that was a transformer."
"Right and so the Megazord has all these people driving it like a car, and those are the Power Rangers."
"Fuck it. I'll go as Julius Caesar and you as Cleopatra."
"Lex!"
...
жжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжж
"I feel silly," says Jon, trying on his costume in the dressing room at the costume store.
"Don't, just finish getting dressed," says Conner.
"Okay, but I'm not going out there. You guys have to come in here."
"Okay," says Conner. "Let me go see where Colton went off to." Just then, Colton comes walking up with chocolate milk and a donut. "Match! Did you run all the way to Double Nuts Pastries for that?"
"That depends. Which answer will get me in less trouble."
"Nevermind, just don't get frosting on the costumes."
"I won't. Is Jon done changing yet?"
"He changed into five different costumes while you were gone. He didn't like any of them."
"We could always go as each other."
"What?"
"Jon can be me, I'll be you and you can be Jon. All we'd have to do is wear each other's clothes. No fuss."
"Guys, come here," says Jon. "I'm finished getting dressed."
"Wow," says Conner, "you look like a very sexy RoboCop."
"I agree," says Colton, "very sexy indeed."
"I don't like this costume," says Jon, "I'm too skinny for this."
"We could go as Jocks." says Conner. "You could be a track star, a swimmer or a gymnast and Colton and I could be a football player, hockey player or wrestler."
"Or we could go as the Weather Girls and Jonny could go as Storm," says Colton.
Jon and Conner stare at him in disgusted and horrified expressions.
"You're saying you want us to dress up as overweight black women and Jon gets to dress up as Ororo Munroe?" says Conner.
"Fuck you! Martha Wash is incredible!"
"Screw that!" says Jon, "Let's all just go as X-Men. Or Avengers. Without having to be a different race or gender."
"That's not a bad idea," says Conner. "I call Captain America."
"I call Cyclops!" says Jon.
"We'll, fuck then… I guess I'll be Wolverine or someone. Although we would technically be going as a different species if we dress up as humans, mutant or otherwise, so we're already going as a different 'race'."
"Well, we're Caucasian-looking and it would be in bad taste to go in black-face. You could always be Gambit," says Jon.
"You have to be able to shuffle to be Gambit. I'll be… I dunno. Let's go home to figure this out. We can get Cosplay costumes online if we're going as comic book superheroes."
"Like you never wanted to be a comic book superhero," says Jon.
"I didn't. I'm supposed to replace Superman when he gets old. I never wanted to be any other kind of hero."
"Even for Halloween?" says Conner, "We could get those sexy first responder costumes. The skimpy ones for policeman, firefighter and EMT."
"The EMT is just a 'sexy nurse' costume for guys," says Colton.
"I'll be a sexy male nurse," says Jon.
"I call policeman!" says Conner.
"I could be a sexy firefighter," says Colton. "Fine. Do you guys want to get the standard costumes or look at designs online and have Dad order us tailored ones?"
"Tailored," says Jon. "It's hard being tall and skinny."
"Okay, that's cool," says Conner. "Let's do that then."
жжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжжж
"Cavemen?" says Roy.
"Cavemen," says Arsenal.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••
There are several fun characters in this story and one of my favorites is Jason Todd.
Here are a few excerpts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jason Excerpt 1: The Lecture Dodge
"Drink your beer," says Jason. "Lex won't mind, but if Clark sees I'm giving alcohol to a nineteen-year-old he's gonna try to guilt trip me."
"Does it work?" asks Jay.
"Does what work?" says Jason.
"When he tries to guilt trip you," says Jay.
"Not really, but it's not fun getting one of his lectures," says Jason.
"And what about one of my lectures?" says Superman coming in from the balcony.
"You've licked my ass before, Superman. Your pure Boy Scout routine doesn't work anymore."
•••••••••••••••••••••••••
Jason Excerpt 2: Tim's Kidnapper
When Tim wakes up, he's blindfolded and tied to a chair. He listens for any evidence that his captors are nearby and when he doesn't hear any movement, breathing or talking, he reaches for his utility belt. It's gone. That's going to make things a bit more difficult, he thinks. He tries to use his wings to cut the cord but they're gone too. Finally, he decides to do this the hard way and manually tries to untie himself. It takes him a lot longer than he'd like, but he gets the cord untied and frees himself. He rips off the blindfold to find he isn't alone in the room. A man with black hair and a white streak in his bangs, wearing a black and red costume is eying him curiously. Tim kicks himself for thinking he was alone. Time to bluff.
Before he can start a convoluted speech about having trackers on him, the man walks up to him and drops several tiny, broken pieces of tech in his newly freed hands.
"I thought we could use some privacy while we're having our fun," his captor says. "We've changed locations seven times while you were out. Old Brucie has no idea where you are."
"Who's 'Brucie'?" Tim asks stiffly.
"Now, now, Tim-Tim, I know all of your secrets. His too. As a show of good faith I even let you see my face."
"You won't get away with this!" Tim says, hoping he's intimidating (but kind of knowing he's not).
"Actually, I think I will. Now, give me your best bat glare. Don't hold back."
Tim tries not to acquiesce the man, but he pulls out Tim's utility belt and gives him a look. "Come on, Timmy. Be good and I'll give you your belt back."
Tim glares at him.
"That's just pathetic," says the man. He disappears for a split second and reappears sans utility belt. "You'll have to do better if you want your things back."
"I think I'll settle for esca—"
The cold barrel of the gun is pushed against his throat before he realizes that the man has even moved.
"If you want to escape, don't tell me that's what your going to do, just do it! Here," he says getting a coil of knotted cords from a nearby table and tossing it at Tim. "Untie these behind your back. Do it faster this time." The man lazily waves the gun around in Tim's direction, and he realizes he never checked the man like he normally would. Batman trained him to observe everything about his opponents and use everything about a given situation to his advantage, but he failed to notice the multiple obvious guns strapped to the man's legs, and he was so focused on figuring out the man's powerset and thinking of what to do next that he hadn't even taken in his surroundings. As he places the rope behind his back and starts untying it, he looks around the warehouse where the man has taken him.
"About time! Now make it look like you're concentrating on the knot and looking in random directions as you focus on your goal. You're being too obvious right now."
'Oh my God!' thinks Tim, 'This guy must have a really weird fetish.'
Tim presents the unknotted cords to the man and the man does a face palm. "No! No! Buy yourself some time. Keep it looking like you aren't succeeding and use that time to take in your surroundings. Have you even seen the weapons lying around?"
"You told me to untie the knots faster this time."
"But I didn't tell you to give yourself away! Jeez. Let's try the next step. Now that you are untied and have completely given yourself away, what do you do?"
"Are you teaching me?"
"Somebody has to. My faith in Bruce is completely crushed by his inability to prepare you for this. Like I said, I have a gun, I'm pointing it at your head, you're untied, I know you're trying to escape, what do you do?"
"Surrender peacefully and try better next time?" asks Tim. The man face-palms again, and Tim uses that moment to dive for cover behind a concrete barrier where he saw several metal poles.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••
Jason Excerpt 3: Batman's Apology
Bruce shows up at the LexCorp penthouse unexpectedly. He doesn't usually call first, but Lex is starting to wish he did.
"Where's Jason?" he says when he steps off the elevator.
"Hello, Bruce, how are you doing?" says Lex. "Now you try."
"Fine. Salutations, Lex. Now where's Jason?"
"I'm here," says Jason, stepping out of the staircase leading up to the next floor. "What do you want Bruce?" Jason looks at the package in Bruce's hands and knows it can't be some sort of gift or gesture of love. They're most certainly documents and mission dossiers.
"I want to apologize. I shouldn't have called you soulless, and I didn't mean to cut your throat back then. I was aiming for your shoulder, but the batarang banked off the pipe differently than I expected. I also wanted to give you this." Bruce holds out the package stiffly and Jason sees the greeting card on top of it that says 'I'M SORRY!' in big letters.
"This is a joke, right?" says Jason. There's no way he was aiming for my shoulder! There's no way that he would give me a present without an ulterior motive. And there's definitely no way he would ever apologize!
"Lex, he's a robot or an evil clone! What are you and what did you do with my father?!!"
"Jay," says Lex gently, "why don't you try using your ring to scan him?"
Jason hesitates, but then raises his ring and a shadowy aura lights up around Bruce as the ring scans him. The ring tells him unerringly that this is the real Bruce Wayne.
"This is impossible!" says Jason. "I don't believe you! What do you really want?!"
"Jason – Jay, I love you and I'm sorry for hurting you time and time again. I know I've been wrong to do and say the things I did. I wanted to do right by you and I haven't. Now, I want to change that. Will you forgive me, son?"
"No. I won't. You're years too late for some things and others you still can't take back. Do you believe me that I really have a soul?"
Bruce's mouth clenches into a line and he looks down. He raises his head to speak, but it's already too late. Jason has seen the truth in his face.
"No. You don't believe me. You think I'm a soulless zombie so why try to make amends. If I'm not your Jason, why are you willing to apologize for stuff that happened before I was a Black Lantern?"
"I don't know. I just know it's right for me to make amends. Even if you aren't the original Jason, you have his memories and his experiences. As far as you're concerned, I did those things to you. I intend to make up for it one way or another. I don't want to lose you, Jason. I want you back. I don't care who you date and I'll accept that you do things your way, but I need you in my life Jason. I don't want to be an absentee, neglectful father anymore."
"I don't believe you about the batarang."
"I didn't think you would. Either way, I want you to know I'm sorry. If nothing else, take this gift. I want you to have everything you need. These are brand new items from WayneTech Enterprises. I had them made specifically for you, but dumbed down versions will go to market in a couple of years."
Jason takes the package and goes into the living room. Lex and Bruce follow him in there and sit down in chairs on either side of the couch while Jason opens his gift on the coffee table.
He can't believe his eyes. They're bullets!! they're all color coded and there's a color code sheet in the box. He quickly goes through the list. Smoke bombs, knockout gas, tracer rounds, tranquilizers, adrenaline, Blue Kryptonite, X-Kryptonite and remedies for Joker Venom, Scarecrow's Fear Toxin, Poison Ivy's Sex Pollen and Bane's Venom – all in convenient bullets that are perfectly made to go in his Glock. Jason is astounded.
"If you have to use guns, I want them to be tools to you and not just weapons," says Bruce. "I wanted to show that I support you as a person even if we don't agree on the ethics of crime-fighting."
"Dad, I … Bruce. You know I can't stand you. I know what you think of me. I know what you think of my life choices. Why do you think I would accept this gift?"
"I don't think you will," says Bruce, "But I hope you do. You're my son and I love you. I've always loved you. That will never change. I thought the gift would be a good way to show you that I love you, instead of just saying it."
"I'm gonna need some other caliber bullets," says Jason, "For my other guns."
"Then I'll have them made," says Bruce. "Text me the details, and I'll have R&D manufacture them ASAP."
"I hate you, Dad. But I love you too. Maybe one day you'll believe me that I'm really Jason. But as long as you think I'm a soulless ghoul, we're never going to see eye to eye."
"We don't have to see eye to eye to care about each other. I don't hate you Jason. I could never hate you. And I'm sorry that I hurt you."
"This is too much Bruce," says Jason as he begins to glow in different colors. Violet and blue dance in his aura with the black and red that fades into indigo.
"Alright, son. Do you need me to leave?" asks Bruce.
"Yes. Please go."
"Alright, son. I'll call you. Maybe we can do lunch."
Blue overshines the other colors in Jason's aura.
"Maybe," Jason says. "Goodbye Bruce."
"Bye, Jay."
Lex sits next to Jason on the couch and Jason curls up in his lap. He can't understand what just happened – what would drive Bruce to act this way. In a place in his heart he won't admit exists, he misses Bruce. The truth is Jason is afraid to hope, but hope fills him now and it's overwhelming to experience. He tries to use his Black aura to block emotions out but it glows violet instead.
"What's happening to me, Lex?"
"I thought you knew that Black Lantern Power Rings can imitate all the colors of the spectrum. Your love and hope are greater than your darkness."
"It hurts, Lex."
"I know it does, Sweetie. A lot of old wounds were opened today, but maybe when they close this time there will be less damage than before. It's okay to feel things, Jason."
Jason cries.
So Super Mario Bros. Wonder is out and it’s great. But I specifically want to call out something about it’s approach to animation, because yes Wonder looks better than the New series but it’s important to acknowledge WHY.
youtube
This video, without words, does SO MUCH to demonstrate the difference between Wonder’s philosophy and the New series philosophy. And it's something I'll be discussing more... AFTER THE BREAK!
I think something that gets lost in the discussion about the NSMB series is how the series evolved graphically, because it’s easy to look at the difference between U over a decade ago (or U Deluxe just shy of 5 years ago) and Wonder and wonder (heh) just what was going on with U.
The answer is that for 5 years U represented the culmination of a different kind of graphical journey, one that I was there for and remember noticing even at the time. And look, YES the NSMB games are generic but let’s table that for a second and go on a bit of a journey here.
NSMB DS came at a time where having a 3D game on a handheld was a BIG DEAL, and NSMB reflects that in more ways than one. Because while the promo art looks like THIS:
The actual game looks more like THIS:
If you go back and play NSMB today the thing that’s going to surprise you is just HOW LITTLE 3D is in it. Yes Mario is 3D and most of the enemies are too but the blocks you bash, the Koopa shells you kick, the power ups you collect and the backgrounds you run through are NOT. They’re all rendered as 2D sprites to help the game run smoothly on the DS.
Why do I point this out? Because it’s indicative of the New series’s approach to 3D. The sheer act of being in 3D is a spectacle, having a 3D rendered Mario is a graphical trick so cool that the first game has to invent its own hybrid art style to show it off.
Now let’s flash forward to Wii:
Immediately we’re looking at a big shift, we’ve still got a hybrid art style but one that looks much more cohesive.. This game is a much more significant graphical leap, it LOOKS in gameplay like the first game’s promo material! And this trend would be continued by 2 which upped the saturation in its art style (2 is both my favorite game in the New series and my favorite pre-Wonder 2D Mario (no really) and I usually hate that it gets the shaft but that's a discussion for another time unfortunately). Now jump ahead to U:
Nintendo's first game on an HD console, U was considered U-niversally (heh) underwhelming by graphical standards but for my money I think U still had a distinct graphical goal: to create environments that were U-nique (heh) to the previous games. NSMB is famous for using the same world themes in every game, but U takes them, polishes them up, and gives them a bit of personality to help stand on their own. From the moai and dessert motifs of layer cake desert to the mushroom trees of acorn plains to the night skies and auroras of frosted glacier. YES its the same themes but they have a bit more pop this time and that's intentional. What HASN'T changed is the approach to animation, and this is where we circle back to Wonder. The "Wow" factor of these games is still that it uses 3D models, so it doesn't focus on HOW it uses models as much or how those models look in 3D space. Go watch the video again and what stands out is how... for lack of a better term... utilitarian the U animations are. The Wonder animations are all peppered with bits of personality but the U animations are all focused on just manipulating the models, because the 3D models are the (theoretical) draw.
Moreover, look how the models are constructed. U Mario faces forward as if he is in a 3D space, while the Mario Wonder model is built to more closely resemble the Super Mario World sprites. If you look at the Mario Wonder model closely it doesn't totally make sense, Mario is tilted at a diagonal angle at almost all times, why? BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT LOOKS BETTER IN 2D. The U model is technically what looking at Mario from a side on perspective would be, but the Wonder model brings in elements of 2D animation to create something more visibly appealing. Honestly that's basically the MO of Wonder's graphical style, ignore realism and create visuals that LOOK GOOD with the perspective of the game. It's one of the reason that I find it so strange for the game to use the standard character models in the promo material:
Compared to how they look in game:
But that's just my thoughts. I'd be interested to hear what more seasoned artists think as well! And thanks for tuning in to this tangent haha.
Frost: "Yes, I'm comfortable removing my shell. I trust you and your staff will take care of me." Her tail is wagging in excitement.
"Wonderful! This will also give us an opportunity to give your shell a full polishing while you're having your scale scrub. You're going to shine by the time we're done with you!"
Once they reached the spa rooms, Shelly got the attention of two of her coworkers, who quickly hurried over: A sky-blue Yoshi, and a Goomba with long, brown hair.
"Frost, this is Michelle and Goombanuela, two of my best masseuses. Michelle will handle your scale scrub and facial while Goombanuela tends to your shell."
Goombanuela, who seemed to recognize who Frost was much quicker than Shelly did, gave an affirmative nod.
"Welcome in, Your Highness. Always exciting when we get royalty in here! I'll make sure that shell is so shiny you can see your face in it!"
Michelle, meanwhile, did a quick bow towards the Koopa Queen.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Frost. Please, step inside one of the available private rooms and remove your shell whenever you are ready."
mah name is bowser and i like to eat food til im burstin like balloons til im filled up and it hurts
Stacks of plates teeter on each arm of the throne. Bright pink boxes, bent and abused, are poorly positioned soldiers guarding the seat. The room reeks of decadence: a mixture of freshly baked confections and charred meat. The recent discovery of Sweet Sweet Galaxy doomed them. Even the most disciplined soldiers come equipped with a sugary treat in hand.
The room immediately went silent: a hundred minions stared with their mouths agape. Crumbs fall from their tongues to the floor.
A cupcake captured in the largest golden claw froze just before reaching Bowser's maw. Drool hangs from the edge of his lip. Time is frozen; it is the last moment of peace the kingdom will know today. The dessert screams out in a squish, frosting and cream squeezed out in a death by crushing.
Who said does not matter; Bowser only sees red. Every life in the throne room is forfeit for one little jester. A sharp inhale marks their doom. Frantic little koopas dip, dive, and dodge! He bakes the entire room in one rage-filled breath of fire!
Out With a Bang - Five of the Coolest Video Game Endings
If there’s one thing that video games always need to get right, it’s the ending. Everything’s been building up to this point, so it really needs to stick the landing to be a properly satisfying finish. Even a mediocre game can be saved by a great ending, but some games really go the extra mile to make the final battle a truly epic moment to be remembered. Massive-scale battles, multiple-stage marathon fights, intense escapes; there are plenty of ways to put the “grand” in the grand finale, but there’s only so many games that do it right. I’ve gathered a handful of games that I believe really nailed the big finish - but remember, spoilers abound! You have been warned - but aside from that, read on and enjoy some of the coolest endings video games have to offer!
Super Mario Odyssey - Bowser As far as Mario games go, Odyssey’s plot is fairly standard - Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario has to go off and rescue her. The final battle against Bowser is a souped-up version of an earlier fight against him, but it’s what comes after the fight that’s the important part. Once Bowser is out for the count and Peach is safe, the cave they’re all in starts collapsing and there seems no way out…or is there? Throughout the game, with Mario capturing and controlling all manner of enemies along his journey, everything has been leading up to this moment: capturing BOWSER! With the Koopa King under Mario’s control, the player gets to really feel just how unstoppable he can be as you smash and thrash your way through the self-destructing cave with an epic new song rocking away in your ears. Odyssey is probably the most intense ending to a Mario game yet, all thanks to Bowser’s power in Mario’s hands!
God of War - Baldur In a series known for massive-scale battles against all-powerful gods, God of War (2018) is fairly subdued in comparison…until the grand finale, that is, where Kratos and Baldur go head-to-head for a second time in true God of War fashion. Throughout the heavily emotional conflict, Baldur’s mother Freya constantly tries to break up the fight, initially by trapping the two with magic and ultimately resorting to resurrecting the nearby skyscraper-sized corpse of the frost giant Thamur. Because, y’know, God of War. The fight is lengthy and increasingly dangerous, until Kratos’ son Atreus manages to summon the massive world serpent, Jörmungandr, to attack Thamur. Once the nigh-invincible Baldur is finally killed, with Kratos snapping his neck to stop his murderous vengeance against Freya, the fight seems over but the trouble is just beginning. Baldur’s death not only invokes Freya’s rage, but triggers the start of the apocalyptic Ragnarök, setting the stage for the sequel and changing the world forever.
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus - Mr. Eye The Ratchet & Clank series is often known for bullet-sponge bosses where the only real strategy is “shoot it until it dies”. Into the Nexus changes things up a little, with the final battle against the monstrous Mr. Eye being one of the longest fights against one of the largest bosses in the entire franchise. Ratchet alone has to confront the skyscraper-sized interdimensional horror, with only a tiny platform to stand on while Mr. Eye tears up the entire city around him. The fight is broken up into several stages, with puzzles in-between the combat where Clank must search Mr. Eye’s home dimension for someone to help banish the creature as Ratchet fights for survival. Mr. Eye also smashes the platform arena, creating fast-paced platforming segments that make use of the game’s new gravity boot mechanics to leap across the floating debris. Throughout the fight, the game blasts hyped-up heroic music to pump you up, giving Ratchet and the player the resolve needed to overcome this marathon of a battle.
Risk of Rain 2 - Mithrix In Risk of Rain 2, the lunar themes present in the game come full circle as you’re teleported to the moon of Petrichor V for the final battle, fighting your way across strange ancient architecture until you confront Mithrix. Mithrix puts up the toughest fight in the game, even resorting to stealing the players’ entire inventory of powerful items and using them against you! Unlike any other boss in the game, Mithrix even taunts the player in the chat, right up until you beat your items back out of his hands and finally slay him. Once he’s down however, a countdown appears onscreen and gives you two minutes before the moon itself explodes! Rushing back to the start of the level to find an escape pod, bizarre new enemies appear from the Void to slow you down until you manage to launch the pod. The ending cutscene shows the player barely escaping as the moon is swallowed by the Void, vanishing into nothing…
Jedi: Fallen Order - Darth Vader Some games make the player feel like a powerful badass after beating the final boss, while others demonstrate just how much stronger the enemy is compared to you. Then there’s Jedi: Fallen Order, where after beating a dangerous Sith Inquisitor, the relatively young and inexperienced Cal Kestis is faced with Darth Vader himself. To show just how out of his depth Cal is in comparison, Vader doesn’t even have a healthbar - attacking him is futile, and the only option is to run like hell. As Vader uses the Force to literally tear the level apart behind Cal, the player has to dodge debris and enemies in a mad dash for survival - and just when you think you’ve lost him, Darth Vader jumpscares you as the Imperial March blares. Cal has to drop an entire ocean on Vader just for a chance of escaping, and both he and the player will be thanking their lucky stars they survived.
Of course, this is only a small handful of examples of great video game endings. If you know any other fitting examples or if I’ve missed anything about these ones, let me know! Reblogs and likes are much appreciated! Thanks for reading!
