The Best Dehumidifiers for 2020

Our pick
Frigidaire FFAP7033T1
This energy-efficient model is powerful enough for large spaces, its built-in pump offers lots of drainage options, and other nice details make it one of the easiest dehumidifiers to live with.
Buying Options
*At the time of publishing, the price was $310.
The Frigidaire FFAP7033T1, a pump-equipped 70-pint machine, is our top pick among dehumidifiers. Rated for spaces as large as 1,400 square feet, the FFAP7033T1 is powerful enough to keep most basements and living spaces comfortably dry, and the pump allows you to place it almost anywhere because it can direct the condensed water up and into a sink or out a window. If you know you don’t need a pump—that is, if you don’t mind emptying the tank on a regular basis or you’re certain you can passively direct the water into a basement-floor drain or safely place the machine above a sink—we recommend the otherwise identical, pumpless Frigidaire FFAD7033R1 as a less expensive option.
The additional versatility the pump provides makes the FFAP7033T1 our pick as an all-around best dehumidifier. But a malfunctioning pump is also a common source of owner complaints; see Flaws but not dealbreakers below for our thoughts on this concern. And if you need to dehumidify only a single bedroom, laundry room, or other small space, check out our smaller, cheaper 30-pint picks below.
The FFAP7033T1 and FFAD7033R1 each use a compressor and fan to draw air through the machine and condense moisture, and in our tests both machines performed impressively. The FFAD7033R1 (the pumpless version) excelled in our testing in a pair of large, very damp, unsealed basements in Buffalo, New York, reducing the humidity from more than 70 percent to 45 percent overnight when set on high, and thereafter holding the humidity at 50 to 55 percent on its lowest setting, even during rainy weather. In a brief confirmation test in Los Angeles, the FFAP7033T1 (the pump-equipped top pick) dropped the humidity in a smaller space from 72 percent to 58 percent in just half an hour on high, even with a humidifier continuously replenishing the moisture in the air.
Setting up and operating the FFAP7033T1’s pump is straightforward once you manage the needlessly tricky removal of the plug that comes installed. The hose automatically seals and locks in place—no need for any tools. Then you activate the pump via the control panel. Note that the pump doesn’t turn on immediately: It activates only once the tank is full, which can take hours. (And be sure to keep the plug attached to the machine via its little zip-tie “leash”: You’ll need to reinstall it if you later decide to turn the pump off and drain the FFAP7033T1 by another method.)
Installing the pump hose is straightforward: Pull out the fluorescent-green plug and press the hose into the socket. Photo: Rozette Rago
The pump hose is 16 feet long, allowing you to direct the water across a floor and up and out a window, or into a sink. (Or whatever your space demands: We’ve read reports from owners who use the pump to send the water out a cellar door; out a garage, over a curb, to a downspout drainfield; and out the windows of RVs and unheated garden sheds. Those are all places where passive draining isn’t an option.) In practice, it’s probably best to trim the hose to the minimum length you need and to minimize the height you have to lift the water, as doing so will put less strain on the pump. In our test, we cut the hose to about 5 feet long and ran it up from the humidifier on the floor into a kitchen sink—a roughly 40-inch “lift”—and it functioned without any problems.
As noted above, both the pump-equipped FFAP7033T1 and the pumpless FFAD7033R1 also let you drain away the condensed water passively. You do this by attaching a short length of standard garden hose and directing it down a floor drain or—if you can elevate the dehumidifier on a convenient table or sturdy shelf—into a sink. Frigidaire makes installing the hose especially easy by including a short extension pipe that puts the attachment outside the body of the machine. By contrast, on every competitor’s machine we looked at, we had to thread the hose through a small hole in the body and screw it in place inside the cramped confines of the tank slot, a fussy and occasionally knuckle-busting job.
Every other dehumidifier we tested (this is the GE runner-up) makes you hook the hose up inside the cramped confines of the tank area. Photo: Rozette Rago

Finally, you can also drain both machines by the manual method, pulling the tank out and pouring the water down a drain or outside. Be aware, though, that with their tank capacity of 13.1 pints and daily water-condensing capacity of 70 pints, you might end up needing to do this several times a day. That can be a pain, especially if it means going down to the basement each time. And if the tank becomes full while you’re asleep or away from home, you’ll be without dehumidification until you can empty it: The machines shut down when full to prevent flooding.
Moving away from raw performance to more subjective factors, we favored these Frigidaire dehumidifiers for a number of thoughtful design details. To help you move them around, they have large, comfortable tuck-away top handles that are more secure in the hand than the small pocket handles on all the other machines we looked at. They also have convenient cord hooks on the rear panel, so you can wrap the power cable neatly out of the way when the machines aren’t in use or when you’re moving them—a nice feature that no competitor offers.
Built-in cord hangers make the Frigidaire 70-pint model easier to reposition or to put away for storage. Photo: Rozette Rago

Frigidaire’s air filters, which need a rinse every couple of weeks to keep the condenser running at its best, are mounted on the outside of the machine, so they’re easy to see, remove, and reinstall. Most competitors hide their filters inside the machine, making them slightly harder to service and, more important, putting them out of sight and out of mind. (All the machines we tested have a warning light that indicates it’s time to rinse the filter, but that light is easy to overlook.)
Finally, both of these Frigidaire dehumidifier models have simple, intuitive, well-lit controls (useful in gloomy basements) and are Energy Star rated, meaning they’re relatively energy efficient. And they’re relatively quiet in use, measuring between 52 and 58 decibels on their low, medium, and high settings. Most competitors are similar in those respects.

AN EXPANDABLE DEHUMIDIFIER: WITH A TANK THAT RETRACTS BACK
A characteristic part of every dehumidifier is its water-tank, which pulls water vapor in the air to lessen its humidity. This water vapor condenses in becoming tiny droplets water that will get collected inside the dehumidifier, requiring periodic emptying out. The larger the tank, the greater its capacity, and for that reason, the larger the dehumidifier. The retractable Dehumidifier circumvents the issue of getting massive expandable dehumidifiers that sit in corners in our households. By basically mounting the tank on top of the unit and making it an expanding bellow-formed container, the applying holds the opportunity to remain small but expand as water collects there, just like a balloon. When filled, the bellow-tank detaches from the appliance, and could be transported around, either getting used to water plants, wash your vehicle, or perhaps be used elsewhere in the home. Once emptied, the applying resumes its compact shape, and may be easily kept in closets or hidden somewhere you would not normally have the ability to stash a sizable appliance. Full-size compressor based expandable dehumidifiers (for example individuals within the photo above) can handle removing up to 10 gallons water in the air every day. Most thermo-electric and desiccant units can remove merely a couple of ounces each day at the best. Compressor based units may be used to expandable dehumidify any (reasonably) sized space at any level of humidity. Most thermo-electric and desiccant units are only able to be employed to dehumidify small spaces (just like a closet, for instance) and just when the level of humidity for the reason that space isn’t high. Because thermo-electric and desiccant units simply won't work for most of us in many situations we’re likely to leave our discussion of these later on. Our focus for many of the guide is going to be on full-size compressor based expandable dehumidifiers - the only real kind of dehumidifier that will assist the requirements of many people in many situations. This is the kind of expandable dehumidifier that many people typically consider once they hear the term “dehumidifier”.
