Musc Noir For Her by Narciso Rodriguez: One of the Best Day, Office, "My Skin But Better" Scents Out There
Tumblr media
Notes: Plum, Musk, Heliotrope, Suede
I recently purchased some samples of many different perfumes and also added a sample of Musc Noir For Her by NR, one of the very few Narciso perfumes I hadn't smelled, and yes, I like this one as well. It is a "my skin but better" fragrance, a "no-perfume" perfume. It is by far the most toned down from the For Her collection, it has a fruitness from the plum in the opening, but not juicy-like, but jam plum after some minutes it becomes very slightly flowery and vanilla-y with the slightest touch of almonds and after an hour or two it settles down in the most gorgeous skin-like powdery, creamy musk with suede. If someone wants a clean perfume without the soapy/deodorant/shampoo feeling you are here. I have seen people complain about longevity, but I don't think it's the issue here. I could still smell it for a solid 7 hours after I sprayed it on myself, BUT the sillage is very very intimate. VERY intimate, put your nose on my skin intimate, I could smell it on me, but people around me didn't give it any thought except if they were extremely close to the point of touching me. And this is where Noir comes into play I think. When I first sprayed it on I was so confused with the name Noir, which inclines you towards a darker/ night perfume and this ain't it, but it is an intercourse perfume for sure. It smells so good and so clean and skin-like creamy powder, but also sweet and slightly fruity, that if you are intimate with someone it will be detectable and they will enjoy it. It is Noir because it's perfect for personal night activities, not for a night out and the bottle/color I think supports that, white/rosy/nude, sheer, undetectable, and sleek. Loved it, my favorite from the For Her line, I am thinking of a bigger bottle. Not for people who want statement perfumes, perfumes that cling, and perfumes with sillage.

NARCISO RODRIGUEZ FOR HER EDT: post-work drinks in the crisp autumn evening in your sexiest shoes
to test a MUSK scent, part 10/10 of PART 2 of my perfume testing. fragrantica
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On spraying: what I associate with a simple “perfumey” smell
10 minutes: I get something floral which I’m assuming is the orange blossoms, but mostly I’m just smelling what I’m learning is musk, it gets better the more the orange blossom fucks off I think, it’s definitey sexier but in a mature and subdued way than a lot of the perfumes I’ve tried so far.
30 minutes: The more I wear it the more I like it. It’s not in your face but it is making me feel good. If mademoiselle is girlish and no. 5 is ladylike, this is something else between them.
1 hour: continued soft muskiness
ROUND 2
On spraying: definite orange blossom, musky perfuminess
10 minutes: oh I smell really yummy, nice rich orange blossom, I can really smell this about me
30 minutes: I can still smell it about me which is nice (2x wrists, 2x ears), it’s deep orange blossom, smells coolgirl to me
4 hours: it’s still noticeable but a lot softer, and the cool girl warm orange blossom is mostly gone - I actually really enjoyed the orange blossom in my chunky leather heels in the crappy rainy weather this morning

Perfumes for Vorkosigan Saga Characters
There are enough offhand references to fragrance in the Vorkosigan books that I strongly suspect Lois McMaster Bujold of being a perfume enthusiast. Also it's fun to imagine what the characters would wear.
Aral and Miles Vorkosigan
Miles is sometimes noted to wear a traditional masculine cologne, and he strikes me as the sort to wear the same thing his father does, as a sort of default grooming routine. You don't get much more traditional and correct than Chanel Monsieur, a mossy, bone-dry cologne/chypre hybrid.
Cordelia Vorkosigan
As the author-insert character, I think Cordelia enjoys perfume and knows exactly what she wants. I picture her in my beloved vintage Rochas Mystere, an earthy, outdoorsy, yet elegant chypre, with lots of brisk cypress and a rusty warm carnation heart to match her auburn hair.
Alys Vorpatril
Alys is a lady of a certain age with excellent taste, and therefore appreciates the formal, embellished perfection of Divine, a classical aldehydic floral weighted towards tuberose.
Ivan Vorpatril
Ivan has no taste of his own; once he got old enough to try dousing himself in body spray as a teen, his mother bought him a bottle of Divine L'Etre Aime Homme, a classically French masculine with a warm, smoky immortelle note, which sets off his darkly athletic good looks.
Elena Bothari-Jesek
Elena, I think, came to perfume later in life, finding a balm in a private feminine pleasure that wasn't part of her rigidly militaristic youth. She'd appreciate something delicate and poignant, like YSL Paris, a rose-violet powder-puff scent.
Bel Thorne
Bel was once mentioned wearing "floral perfume" to emphasize its feminine side. The adventurous Betan mercenary strikes me as a tuberose fan, and I imagine it wearing something like Frederic Malle Carnal Flower -- bold, sleek, streamlined, stylish but not too obscure. (Bel is, at heart, a bit of a normie.)
Elli Quinn
Space-station-born Elli is used to being in confined spaces with strangers, so she never wears perfume -- she even insists on unscented soaps. But she might have picked up a bottle of Etat Libre d'Orange Secretions Magnifiques as a vile practical joke (it smells, very realistically, like vomit.)
Taura
Taura's genetic enhancements gave her an exceptional sense of smell, and her lust for life and enthusiastic experiments in feminine presentation suggest she would absolutely try out perfume, but she's not analytical enough to get super into it. Somebody gives her Narciso Rodriguez For Her, a basic sweet floral musk, and she sticks with that.
Cavilo
The sociopathic mercenary Cavilo is described as wearing a very sharp green floral perfume that gives Miles allergies. I imagine this as Tom Ford Vert Boheme, a clean, contemporary take on the classic 1970s green florals, which smells exactly like a crisp green leaf before opening out into a ladylike magnolia.
Pel Navarr
The Cetagandans are perfume-lovers, so the aristocratic haut Pel would certainly wear perfume. Given her restrained, elevated tastes, I picture her in Parfums MDCI Le Cri De La Lumiere, a barely-there, sparkling-white iris-rose concoction of surpassing purity.
Lilly Durona
I have a soft spot for the Durona Group -- rogue ancap bioengineering clone family of my heart. In her artificially extended lifespan, the matriarch Lilly must have tried her hand at perfuming at some point, and probably invented a few new aromachemicals of her own. All the Durona women have flower names, and I imagine Lilly wears her namesake via something similar to Serge Lutens Un Lys, the most realistic, narcotic, honey-dripping lily scent ever.
Mark Vorkosigan
We know Mark's visual aesthetic tends towards the dark and gloomy, his gustatory tastes run towards the sweet and indulgent, and his erotic tastes are, um, both. There's only one right answer here and it's Bvlgari Black: fetishy black rubber up top, birthday-cake sweet vanilla below.
Enrique Borgos
Enrique is a nerd, and in his own way an aesthetic soul. I guarantee you he is interested in perfume, and he'd gravitate to the perfumer's perfumer, the chemist Christophe Laudamiel. He would be fascinated by the strange "neon-hologram" effect in The Zoo Spacewood.
Kareen Koudelka
Kareen's adventurous nature probably took her to try some perfumes on Beta Colony, and she'd invariably gravitate to warm, cozy ambers and gourmands. I can see her in the unpretentious burnt-caramel smell of Kerosene Broken Theories.
Ekaterin Vorsoisson
The reserved, introverted Ekaterin has "unerring taste". Which means, in an olfactory context, she's probably figured out that Liz Moores is one of the best living perfumers. I have Ekaterin pegged for an iris lover, so she wears Papillon Angelique, a delicate, rustic spring iris with subtle, velvety layers of texture.

NYT: Why Do So Many People Wear All Black?
Article
A reader struggles to see the allure of wearing black clothing. Our fashion critic offers an explanation for its popularity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By Vanessa Friedman
Sept. 16, 2024
Leer en español
I don’t understand the perennial appeal of black clothing, which seems ubiquitous. Is it a trend? Is it a statement? Will it ever go away? — Ilse, Washington, D.C.
In August, a middle school in El Paso, Texas, sent out a missive to families announcing that students were no longer allowed to wear black from top to bottom. The thinking was that black was more associated with “depression and mental health issues and/or criminality than with happy and healthy kids ready to learn.”
The decision, not surprisingly, produced such an outcry that it was quickly put on hold to allow for community discussion. And while it does seem somewhat extreme and not entirely realistic, reflecting a very limited understanding of black clothing’s role in the public psyche, it also demonstrates the very real power of wearing all black. More than any other color, it is replete with associations and symbolism, which may mean one thing to a wearer and another to an observer — and which changes depending on the context.
After all, black is the color of witches. Of ninjas. Of rock stars. Of the beats and the Hong Kong protesters. Of Darth Vader, Johnny Cash, Batman, Morticia Addams and Lydia Deetz. It is associated with mystery, mourning, eccentricity and elegance. (Oh, the allure of the little black dress!) Also teenage rebellion and angst.
Fashion people are known to love black, even though Anna Wintour reportedly hates it. Many designers, including Yohji Yamamoto, are partial to it.
Mr. Yamamoto once told The New York Times: “Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy, but mysterious. But above all, black says this: I don’t bother you, don’t bother me.”
I asked Kate Lanphear, the women’s style editor of T magazine and a favorite of street-style photographers thanks to her personal look, which mostly involves black, why she likes it.
“All black quickly became my go-to uniform early in my career for two simple reasons,” she said. “First, it often looks more expensive than it is. This was essential when I was a struggling assistant and couldn’t afford the very best. And second, it’s easy. You could essentially get dressed in the dark.”
This is also what the designer Narciso Rodriguez told me when I asked him. (At the time he was wearing a black T-shirt with black jeans and a black jacket.) “It’s a no-brainer,” he said. “And you always look pulled together.”
You don’t have to worry about clashing patterns, what color goes with what or sticking out like a sore thumb in chartreuse. And precisely because there are so many cultural associations attached to the color black, it comes ready-made with a certain amount of mystery and provocation. Which one is yours?
That can be an advantage, or it can be annoying. It is also why black has been a wardrobe color of choice for so long, and why it is unlikely it will go away as a fashion choice any time soon — or, in fact, ever. (Another reason to wear black is that it’s a pretty good investment.)
Still, if you wear it, you have to be prepared for the reactions it may provoke. Thanks to all of the above, and as that El Paso hoo-ha showed, black may be a basic, but it is rarely neutral.

A darling on the city’s social scene, Bessette-Kennedy quickly carved out her unique minimalist style. Soon paparazzi shots of her navigating the streets of New York in a pair of Levi’s and a basic white tee were tacked to the mood boards of stylists and designers alike, and her Narciso Rodriguez slip wedding dress inspired generations of brides, including Meghan Markle. - “Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s Iconic ‘90s Style Moments” by L’officiel

Hi. I love your reply with all references of perfumes. It bring back a memory of an old post on your blog (many years ago) about how much you love them. What are your favorites if i may ask ?
Hi! Thank you very much! I remember that old post, though I cannot find it anymore. Nothing has changed since then, I am still unhealthy obsessed with perfumes. I have lots of favorites, so it is not that easy to make a short list... I am very much into vintage/old school/classic perfumes, avant garde niche, arabian stuff. My heart belongs to leathery, incense, oud, amber, patchouli, greenish notes.
I am a huge fan of Serge Lutens, I adore his style and vision of perfumery (created together with Christopher Sheldrake); I deeply respect Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garçons creations, I love Guerlain, Cacharel (old stuff they made), Amouage, État libre d'Orange, Frederic Malle, Tom Ford, Diptyque brands, every piece they make is special.
Сoncretely speaking, here are the perfumes I will always have (I hope to always have) in my collection in any form:
Guerlain "Shalimar" EDT/EDP
Byredo "M/Mink"
Serge Lutens "Baptême du Feu", "Chergui", "Ambre Sultan"
Calvin Klein "Obsession" and "CK One"
Les Liquides Imaginaires "Sancti"
BeauFort London "Terror & Magnificence"
Etat Libre d'Orange "Tilda Swinton Like This"
Diptyque "L’Ombre Dans L’Eau" EDP
Frederic Malle "Dans Tes Bras"
Tom Ford "London" or "Noir de noir"
Narciso Rodriguez "Narciso Rodriguez for Him" and "For her" in a pink bottle (EDP)
Chanel "Chanel No 5" EDP
Jacomo "Silences"
Paloma Picasso "Paloma Picasso"
Ted Lapidus "Creation"
Cacharel "LouLou", "Eden" and "Anais Anais"
The New Dawn/Novaya Zarya "Red Moscow"/"Krasnaya Moskva"
At the moment I have a small collection of 32 full size perfume bottles, and of course as a totally obsessed perfume maniac, I have lots of samples and atomizers of different sizes, with things I try daily (around 150 pieces). I also have three small vintage bottles of "Mitsouko" parfum (1985), "Shalimar" EDT (~1980s), and Otto Kern's "Noa Noa" (~1990s). My collection is not that big if to compare it with some influencers, but I enjoy having and trying every sample.
Sorry for the longposting, I can chitchat about perfumery for hours. The only thing to shut me up would probably be spraying "Baccarat rouge 540" in my face.

ah, I just got into perfumery (my latest hyper-fixation) and I find your acc coincidentally?! 🩵🪽 woohoo :] my current fave perfume is Narciso Rodriguez for her. I love scents that are woody, white flowers, musky, earthy, seductive but not sexy iykwim. they feel like a night’s breeze and there’s a natural, authentic element to them.
do you have any recs for me?
(can i be your 🪼 anon?)
Hello! 🩵 Yes you can
Hmmmm, I like those types too! I recommend trying
• Nishane Hundred Silent Ways X (sensual musky not too sweet white floral with depth) -> but not on the “natural authentic side” more on the musky seductive side
• Diptyque Orphéon (powdery, woody, put together but a free spirit, sitting in a calm place with the breeze blowing vibes)
or L’eau Papier (definitely very natural, musky, clean, bit woody)
You also might like Fleur De Peau (more aldehydic and quite powdery, I wasn’t a fan personally but ofc scents are different for everyone so if you walk past I recommend at least giving this a try because many do love this one)
or Doson, I highly recommend this the most probably, definitely fits the musky woody white floral vibe
All are definitely natural “melt into you” scents, diptyque does that well in many perfumes (can you tell I like this brand)
• Serge Lutens also very much fits the natural, floral, musky, alluring with a nights breeze vibe. Try clair de musc from them. But keep in mind this brand doesn’t have that much depth or intensity, they’re more for “vibes”

a post nobody asked for about what perfumes the characters of sweetpea would wear
Tumblr media Tumblr media
julia’s signature scent is baccarat rouge. she’s the first person in their town to wear it, but she was the last person to discover it in her previous circle of friends. before baccarat, she went through seven bottles of chanel chance eau tendre and still keeps one on hand to remember the days before she was forced to eat lipstick and have her fingers smashed in door frames
Tumblr media Tumblr media
seren, like many women living in france, has fallen victim to narciso rodriguez perfumes. doesn’t matter which one, because they all smell the same to her. but every time somebody asks her about it she gets to say, “narciso rodriguez. you’ve never heard of him? everyone in paris wears narciso” with an exaggerated french accent for “paris” and “narciso”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in all actuality, rhiannon does not wear perfume. she smells like sweat, desperation, cheap deodorant, and bleach (because she’s rewearing the shirt she murdered someone in). but on occasion she’ll wear viva la juicy because that’s what julia used to wear in high school, and rhiannon knows this because she spent several afternoons obsessively tracking it down and annoying the ladies who worked the perfume counter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in all actuality, marina does not wear perfume. she smells like sweat, desperation, and coffee because she spilled some on her shirt and hasn’t had time to wash it yet since she’s too busy screaming in the middle of the street about the serial killer she’s obsessed with. she does own a bottle of ck everyone though, and on a good day she smells clean and put together.

I'd love to hear about your favorite perfumes, since you have that as a hobby!
hah, I wouldn't call it a hobby, I don't own that many perfumes 😅
My current loves are:
Very Good Girl Glam from Carolina Herrera (it's been my "signature" scent for the past year in general)
Musc Noir Rose for her from Narciso Rodriguez (my current first choice)
This summer I used mostly:
Eden Juicy Apple from Kayali
My other staples that I use depending on mood and occasion:
Opium Black from Yves Saint Laurent
Jimmy Choo from Jimmy Choo
Trésor from Lancôme
As you can see, I'm mostly into sweet and gourmand scents 🤭 sometimes more fruity, sometimes more musky, or nutty, but most of all sweet. It's my own preference, but also they combine well with my skin.
Recently I've been curious about:
Lovefest Burning Cherry from Kayali
Fève Gourmande from Guerlain
