Feeling sad about the fact that like. Lyra had nobody waiting for her when she came back to Jordan. Yeah, Iorek said that she's always welcome at Svalbard, but as we saw in season one, that's pretty far away, it's not like she can just pop over for coffee and a catch up whenever she feels like it. Serafina goes through with her, but she's got a whole clan to be queen of, she's got shit to do- and, with the prophecy resolved, she can consider her duty to Lyra done, she doesn't need to keep watching over her anymore.
She had Roger, but he's dead and dissolved into atoms, same with Lee. Her parents jumped into oblivion, so it's not like there's even the hope of reconciling with them at some point. The only people she still has in Oxford, really, are the Master, Ma Costa, John Faa and Farder Coram, who would probably like to see she's okay, but we don't see any reunions with any of them. And at the end of the day, it's not really the same as Will reuniting with Elaine. For all we joked in the first two seasons about Lyra collecting parents everywhere she goes, when all is said and done, she doesn't really have anyone left- nobody on that level, at least.
And that's honestly really sad to me.

Sometimes a family is a fucked up feral girl with truth box and her talking ferret, a boy whose magic knife cut his fingers off, and the girl's adopted parents: a jordan master, a gyptian king, another old gyptian guy, a gyptian woman, a talking polar bear, a texan aeronaut, a witch queen, a scholar who just wanted to make dark matter talk to her and the scholar's best friend the deerelephant-motorbike.

HDM 3 & 4!
Episode 3:
me watching Mrs. Coulter ransack a university library while demanding "find me something heretical or illegal" wow haha it's just like being at work
"tired old men talking about tired old things" How much of breaking Jordan's scholastic sanctuary is revenge for the fact that they won't let women like her in? If you can't beat them, tear them down.
Tony's mumbled excuses about how he found Lyra are so on point for 'kid who does not want his mom finding out about his vigilante justice escapades'
Loving the running gag of Boreal going to our world and finding his car ticketed/booted. He doesn't even know what the boot is
Oh wow, we're getting our first look at Will now? As well as backstory on why his family is getting harassed, and we dropped the bomb of John Parry = Grumman already, even though that's a late book 2 reveal. Interesting choice. My guess would be that they want to spend less time in season 2 on stringing that mystery along and more on developing Will and Lyra's dynamic, since they shift into bffsies mode pretty abruptly.
Mrs. Coulter thinking about falling off high places again... I don't recall the implication of this self-destructive impulse in the books (haven't reread the third yet) but this is certainly setting up her death, huh? Whose idea was it, I don't remember....
Also, her calling Benjamin "boy" multiple times even though he's clearly a grown man - does that have the same racist implications in the UK as it does in America? It certainly shocked me. We hadn't really seen a racial undertone in how she's dealt with Boreal, the Master, or the reporter...
Episode 4
Of course they added Lee singing a song lol. If you paid all the money for LMM...
They took away Farder Coram's disability? He's older, sure, but seems perfectly hale and hearty. I'd make a joke about Lyra just thinking someone is tragically disabled due to being 60+ but the books say his health got wrecked after getting hit by a poison arrow. There is that other gyptian with the limb differences, I suppose.
Iorek is pronounced Yorick??? Oh wow I've been doing Eye-or-eck (like neck) for years.
I can't identify the accent Iorek has, but I'd be curious as to what accent the showrunners decided bears should have. I'd assume something Northern European since we're in Fantasy Scandinavia.
Mrs. Coulter has been violent toward her daemon a few times, which I also don't recall from the books, although it comes up with that one guy in the prequels. It emphasizes her internal conflict that they're setting up super hard.
Lee's far more comic relief in the show, and they've padded out the Iorek armor quest quite a bit. Guess they decided they needed to get their money's worth out of having Lin Manuel Miranda around before he dies and gets eaten.
They didn't make Serafina's daemon a goose??? Slander!!!
Lord Boreal homophobia moment... These have been the Bigotry Episodes
So I get why they have Lyra speak up to convince the gyptians in the previous episode and take the initiative re: Lee and Iorek - it makes the MC a more active rather than reactive protagonist, etc. - but I said while liveblogging the books that I appreciated the gyptians clearly have their own plans and aren't just convenient brown people who exist to ferry the protag on her journey, and this undercuts it a little bit. Also being a kid getting helplessly buffeted around by the machinations of adults is part of what Lyra has to deal with.
I'm still reading it as Eye-or-eck in my head as I type this. Sorry. It's too late for me.

watching His Dark Materials for the first time and you know what
- Asriel and Marisa can fuck off, worst parents of all time
- she brutally hurts her daughter via hurting her daemon, and apparently can’t decide between wanting to save her or kill her, just what?
- he doesn’t even tell her he’s her father, almost breaks her arm, manipulates her best friend, severs him from his daemon, and the process kills him
- No wonder a bear can do a better job of being a parent to Lyra
- Shout out to all the other GOOD adults that have better parental instincts than these assholes
- I’m talking Fun Uncle™️ Lee Scoresby, Papa Bear Iorek Byrnison, Adoptive Mum Ma Costa, Grandpa Farder Coram, Cool Nerd Aunt Mary Malone, and Cool Witch Aunt Serafina Pekkala
- seriously though why did Lyra get some of the worst parents of all time, someone explain it to a newbie
- when your parents are both insane and assholes

She was so cold. It was strange, she was always warm, always complaining for being too hot, Yspor would scold her for it on numerous occasions. Her mother claimed it was the wild Gyptian blood in her veins, burning for a nomadic life of adventure, something her research expeditions had satiated until she had been forced to flee Jordan College. Her anti-magisterium beliefs finally got her in trouble, but her fondness for a certain feisty little girl was what drove her to take up the call for arms to Bolvangar.
It had made her blood sing, the thrill of the fight, doing actual good in protecting and rescuing the missing children from that cursed facility. Fighting alongside the witches was an eye opener as well, that was until in the heat of the fight she noticed one of the guards and his daemon cornering a group of terrified little ones, gun raised and daemon ready to pounce on the tiny ones. Oriel hadn't though twice, Yspor shot off to tackle the daemon while she just managed to reach the guard, giving the children an opening to run. It nearly cost her life, she hadn't seen the other guard and daemon coming up behind her as she pummeled the first with the butt of her gun, she only felt the searing pain of the gun shot and daemon bite on the back of her neck.
A witch had saved her life, enabling her and Yspor to be brought back to the sailing caravan, back to Nessa. The stretcher had been placed in her boat, Yspor curled on top of her to keep them both warm under the mountains of blankets, but even that didn't help much. Her wound was cleaned, and tended to, but she couldn't feel much in her legs, she couldn't even twitch her toes. She was paralyzed from the waist down and now a burden on Nessa who had taken it upon herself to be her nurse. Each time Nessa came, Oriel pretended to be asleep, too afraid to face the woman she loved in her current weakened state, but luck was not on her side when Farder Coram had visited and Nessa had arrived before Oriel could feign sleep. Now she had to face the woman who had her heart in the palm of her hand.

@princguard liked for a serafina starter
"Relationships between witches and humans aren't meant to be lasting. They serve a purpose and that is all." She had been tempted to try to build a life with Farder Coram, but the loss of their son had divided them. Could it have lasted longer if their boy had lived? Serafina couldn't say for sure, but she had her doubts now.

I feel like Marisa’s self hatred really started when her daemon settled. Remember when Farder Coram told Lyra, in response to “What happens if your daemon settles as something you don’t like?”, “That would mean you were discontented”, I feel like young Marisa was already heavily, heavily discontented with herself. And so when her daemon settled as a golden monkey, I think she understood what it meant about herself, or thought she understood anyway, and whatever meaning that is, she hates it, and slowly formed a resentment towards him. Her resentment was strengthened by her later, as she views them, mistakes with Asriel, and her belief that daemons are what bring bad thoughts and errors in judgement.
As for what Marisa interpreted about what her daemon settling meant; My personal theory here is that she spent so much of her life just going through motions, adapting to situations, being whoever she needed to be in order to survive. And then she was probably so excited for the day her daemon would settle, and she would know definitively what kind of a person she really is, because at this point, she doesn’t have a feel for who she really is. She knows that she can become anyone and anything if needed, but she has no true sense of self. She doesn’t know what her own personality is truly like, because she never gets to show or even explore her own personality because of how rigid her childhood is. And she becomes so disheartened when she sees that her daemon settles as a monkey; yes, a beautiful, golden lion tamarin, but a monkey, and Marisa interprets this badly. Something that monkeys are well known for is their ability to mimic. And Marisa comes to the conclusion that’s maybe all she is. Perhaps she doesn’t have a true self, she thinks, maybe mimicking is all she’s good for, all she really is. A copy of everything she knows without any originality of her own, without any sense of who she is because she isn’t anyone, she thinks. She sees herself as what her daemon settles as; a beautiful imitator, and she doesn’t see much else in him or in herself. And this is what furthers such resentment of self and of her daemon, feeling a deep unhappiness with who she is.

REQUESTED BY RUTH !
A former nun who left her convent and became a physicist, Mary has an interesting life even before she travels through worlds, to say nothing of after. Her chapters deal with many philosophical questions, which could make for interesting character exploration. She and Serafina bond almost instantly and consider one another sisters in different worlds, so I'd love to see them reunite and have time to deepen their friendship.
CURRENT HIS DARK MATERIALS CAST: Serafina Pekkala, Marisa Coulter, Lyra Silvertongue.
OTHER WANTED HIS DARK MATERIALS CHARACTERS: Will Parry, Asriel Belacqua, Ruta Skadi, Iorek Byrnison, Lee Scoresby, Farder Coram, Martin Lanselius, Serafina & Coram's son, OC witches!
Apping a requested character gets you a little RA (our site rank-up currency) bonus from the start!

HDM episode 5:
Will and his mom have a pretty nice home considering they only receive a "subsistence" payment from John Parry's trust.
As stated before, I wasn't expecting this much Will content in season 1, but I suppose it makes sense because a lot of the harassment and bullying is described as things that were happening to him prior to the events of the book, and obviously we can't do narrative exposition dumps on screen. Although they sure are trying with the Prophecy Voiceover in this episode. Don't care for that.
More added-in tension between Lyra and the gyptians for some reason.
Additional Farder Coram/Serafina drama, although I suppose Lyra could've just not been privy to it in the book. His story that she wanted to tear the universe apart over the death of their son while he wanted to peacefully mourn and that's what split them up is weird, though, given that in the books Serafina mentions that witches accept that the men and sons in their lives are brief, fleeting things.
I always imagined the witches riding cloud pine branches like broomsticks but Serafina Just Does That, I guess
The true most important foreshadowing of this episode... Will's omelette.
So much stress for his mother who struggles with mental illness (OCD? depression? schizophrenia?) but also there are actually people out to get her. And even her loving son assumes she's delusional. (Liked the detail of her realizing someone had been in the house because the cat was stuck outside. Amateurs. Chekhov's Moxie... she will fire again.)
Pan is embracing their Arctic vacation and being an Arctic fox. Warm
The sewing machine is a great hiding place, honestly, because I bet no hired goon would ever think to look there.
I don't object to switching Tony out for Billy as the severed child Lyra finds - it lets us see the impact of the child's death - but I *am* annoyed that they cut out the villagers' and rescue party's revulsion. Everyone (including the people who came to rescue them) instinctively retreating from a severed child because they're so horrified by their mutilation was really memorable, as is Lyra furiously telling them to stop. Most of all, I'm mad that they took out the dried fish and we lost the moments of the villagers trying to ask her to pay for the fish (are you fucking kidding me) and Lyra's reaction to the rescue party taking the fish away. That's the part of the book that makes me tear up, and I'm disappointed that it wasn't there. It was all he had to hold on to!!!
Iorek: This shit is getting dark. I'm out.
Had to look this up because I was confused (again, just reread the book! Almost like chowing down on an entire novel in an afternoon doesn't always give you perfect recall) but as I thought I remembered, before Asriel tears a hole between the worlds, all man-made doorways passed through Citigazze, including the ones Boreal used. However, they've got him walking directly between his world and ours. To simplify things, I guess?
I mentioned "oh this is going to be a dark episode. well, this is kind of a dark series" which made me think, the first book involves Lyra looking for Roger, and she loses him. The second book is Will looking for his father, and he loses him. At least TGC has the wins of destroying Bolvangar and defeating Iofur. TSK really does not have any wins at all.

Golden C by Phillip P
1. Did Pullman seem to cut back Lyria’s adventuring spirit and make her really obedient and mesmerized by grown up stuff she didn’t seem to care about prior to an unrealistic extent?
2. Where all the woman at?
Yeah, it is a time period thing that woman aren’t in much power but you can still have a couple defying norms. Just because it’s not common doesn’t mean there’s none.
[god it feels so weird talking in binary terms exclusively and assuming she=woman and he=man. Ew. Gonna read a neopronoun wiki after this]
Only interesting woman characters were Ma Costa and Ms Colter so far. ms Colter ended up leaving the story and Ma Costa has a tiny role. It’s just funny you got a book with a billion roles and even the F-ING WITCH. THE WITCH is a man.
Why? You literally have this cool witch queen concept and go “yeah, she’s like really far and you know, snail mail.” Lame.
You got a fucking armored bear.
I know I’m talking to a book made in 1995 but like… the fucker looked like he researched the crap out if this. I feel like it would’ve been so cool to see some kickass woman in different roles than “mom” and “evil socialite.”
…
There’s still armored bears, the aleithometer, Pan, Farder Coram and the future prospect of the Ms Colters throwing the kibosh in it all. So like I’m still looking forward to see what happens but I really hope pages 1-182 is a sore spot for rep and it gets better.
Like repeating characters who get more than one chapter. I don’t expect a big role from Pullman for a woman (exluding Lyria) but .. gah!
I don’t have any expectation of queer, trans, gq but like, at least give us some women. More than 2 side characters and with speaking lines and roles.
For the love of god, I hope the witch queen comes back. She seems so freaking cool!
