The original Fallout had one group of raiders. That was the name the game map gave to them - 'Raiders' - but they were in fact known as the Khans. They were a relatively minor faction, being tied to quests in the first town the player is likely to visit, but we learn a lot about them in their brief appearance.
Many of the Khans are given names and dialogue, and will tell the player about their history - including how they came from the same place as the people of Shady Sands, Vault 15, and feel entitled to share in the town's wealth. Some see their raiding life as a way to claim control of the post-war world - ruling through strength and fear, believing that old ideas of morality died with the rest of the world. Others treat it as just another job - they support their group by trading, maintaining equipment, preparing food, and other everyday tasks.
In short, the Khans are a fully-realised community, as much a part of the story as any other. We learn that their brutal leader, Garl Death-Hand, took command after killing his abusive father. The player can kill him, or negotiate with him, or impress him with acts of cruelty, or even challenge his nihilistic views by convincing him that they're his father, back from the dead. Killing Garl and destroying his compound is treated as the best choice for the region as a whole, and is confirmed to have happened in the next game in the series, but it's certainly not the only option.
Fallout 2 has two groups of raiders. One - again marked 'Raiders' on the map - turn out not to be raiders at all, in that they're not attacking towns to steal their wealth. Instead, they're a mercenary company, hired by a disreputable businessman from one town (New Reno) on behalf of another town (Shady Sands again, now the capital of the New California Republic) to harass a third town (Vault City) to convince them that they need outside help in maintaining their defences. It's part of the game's major subplot about the three societies competing for control of northern California and western Nevada.
The other group are the New Khans, founded by Garl's son Darion after the original Khans' defeat. These Khans aren't nearly so fearsome as their predecessors - they mostly operate in secret, hiding behind a group of squatters who have moved into the ruins of Vault 15 and pretending to help them restore it for use. Darion is wracked with resentment over what happened to his father's crew and guilt for having survived, and his gang ultimately present little real threat to the outside world.
What I'm getting at here is that, in the world of Fallout as it existed in those early games, 'raiders' were not a major factor. There was one group who conducted raids as part of their regular economic activity, but only against particular communities - Shady Sands saw them as raiders, but to the Hub, they were just traders. Raiders only existed in a particular context - they had particular interests, beliefs and opportunities that would not always be possible or applicable.
Most of the games' conflict came not from the existence of raiders but from bilateral political and economic competition between groups with overlapping but not identical interests, which was reflected in their respective ideologies. We see this in Killian and Gizmo fighting to control the future of Junktown, and in the Master's attempt to reshape the world with the Unity while the different groups of New California try to retain their independence.
We particularly see it in Fallout 2, with its three-way battle for economic domination between the constitutional democracy of the New California Republic, the mafia-ruled narco-state of New Reno, and the elitist technocratic slave state of Vault City. Which of these groups continue to rule and expand, and which crumble, is what ultimately shapes the region's future - with control of Redding and its gold supply as the linchpin.
While the Enclave are the story's primary antagonists, they're chiefly characterised by their refusal to engage with this new socio-economic order - they believe that all outside authorities are illegitimate, and all outsiders non-human, and their only plan is to release a bioweapon into the atmosphere and kill literally everyone on Earth but themselves. The Enclave's defeat is necessary for New California's survival, but, otherwise, they change very little about how people live their lives. They're like Darion's New Khans on a larger scale - relics of a fallen order, robbed of their purpose, hiding in an old bunker and driven by nothing but resentment of having been left behind.
I might, in future, talk about the contrasting depiction of raiders in Fallouts 3, 4 and 76, and about New Vegas's use of raider and bandit groups like the Khans, the Legion, the Fiends and the White Legs. For now, I think I've made my point - that raiders are not a fact of life but a product of a particular place and time, and much less relevant to the universe of Fallout than other forms of competition and violence.

What’s Fallout like? Like I know I can google what kind of game it is but more than that what games would you compare it to? and is it more story-based or gameplay-based?
That's a difficult one to answer and I'm not sure I have the authority to do it lol
But I'll try!
The Fallout fandom is fairly complicated due to the IP being passed around and the lore/values of its storytelling being muddied over the years. That being said I think both old-school and new fans would still agree that the story is the most important element, as they're meant to be role playing games where you make decisions on often heavy matters (especially in the games of the original devs).
Fallout 1 and 2 are turn-based isometric rpg-s from the late 90s. If you like that type of gameplay, they're fantastic games and cult classics. They don't shy away from heavy themes.
Then the IP got sold to Bethesda and their version of Fallout is a FPS/TPS action experience, as seen in Fallout 3 and 4. The combat is fun but even the newest game is shit by shooter standards. If you played an Elder Scrolls game (like Skyrim), they're like that but set in a retro futuristic post apocalypse. A large slice of the fandom has only played these ones and skipped the original turn-based games.
Fallout New Vegas was made by the original team but using Bethesda's engine. Many fans would tell you that out of the modern titles, that's the one with the best writing.
Fallout 4 was a very popular title due to the scrap and build system. As you adventure, you can scavenge all sorts of trash and then build your own little settlements in the wasteland and populate them with settlers. Add mods to that, and the community really did some magic. It made people connect with the world of Fallout on a personal level.
The story in a nutshell: in an alternate timeline, survivors of a devastating nuclear war are trying to rebuild and make the irradiated wasteland of the United States liveable again but every group and faction has a different take on how society should be rebuilt. When the writing is done well, your choices have weight and it's impossible to be fair and please everyone. You get to discover a variety of different factors that lead to the Great War and you have to wager whether humanity is doomed to make the same mistakes all over again. Is there a way to avoid them? What kind of sacrifices does that require? Etc.
A lot of it is supposed to be a critical look at war, 50s Americana and the dangers of nationalism, rampant consumerism, xenophobia, etc.
Hope this helped a little! It's difficult to find two Fallout fans who are on the exact same opinion of all the games. I personally think, the fun part of the games is when you get to carve a little slice out of the wasteland for yourself and your community and the stimulating part is the overarching story and lore.
It's no wonder the original writers made The Outer Worlds too, which I don't consider a legendary game but the similarities are obvious in the themes.
#ive been told the Wasteland series is similar to the og games#i got then but havent had the chance to play them yet#personal#text#Fallout

I debated on making this post, but somehow here I am...
Apparently some folks got upset over my post saying how I disliked the Fallout TV show... seriously? Can't even have an opinion on the internet anymore, but I then again when could you?
Look, I'm not upset or anything and am most definitely not here to tell people what you can or can't like. I was merely posting my opinion on something that's part of a series that I've loved for years. I took the time to watch something, gave it a chance, and I genuinely didn't like it. Simple as that. If you loved it, good for you, but maybe you shouldn't read a post talking about how someone else disliked it. Don't try to devalue someone else's opinion, a purely subjective matter, and tell them they're wrong. That's like if I stumbled upon someone venting how they hated the anime Dragon Ball Z... I'd just think to myself, "whatever" and move on with my day.
My post wasn't meant to sound hateful, just very cynical, as that's how I write. It was intended for my own followers, didn't expect someone who follows the tags to find it and flip. This wasn't even supposed to be a serious thing, just some thoughts. I don't cover the actual story writing on the show (which I was not a fan of either...) I said in the beginning I decided against making a full review because there are some great ones already on Youtube. I simply talked about how I disagreed with some of the nasty stuff in the show. Not just Fallout TV particularly, but crap that plagues Hollywood movies in general.
I'll admit I didn't take the greatest care in my writing and for that I received "some" very valid criticism, which I wanted to address in this post where I can hopefully clear up any confusion...
(Remember this is someone's OPINION that could very well differ from your own! If that bothers you, please do not read it. 😇)
1. The games are full of "bad stuff," so it makes sense to feel bad watching it!
I never argued that a rated-M role-playing game about a post-nuclear apocalyptic world didn't have dark and mature themes to it. I simply disliked the nasty crap thrown into the show for the sake of comedic/ shock value.
A.) The incest stuff with Lucy and Sweet Home Alabama (her cousin) was made out to be funny on a Rick & Morty level like "Hahaha wow, I can't believe they put that in there!" It wasn't taken as a serious issue, just a jab at idiot humor. If you want to see incest addressed as a real problem, the indie game "The Coffin of Andy and Leyla" portrays that way better.
B.) The weird freaky guy who bangs chickens is in the same boat. It was just stupid shock value of the BoS guy breaking up two idiots fighting in the wasteland only to have one of them be a "chicken banger..." Wow, so funny! And cherry on top, Maximus just let's him go. Personally, I'd have killed him or brought him back to the chicken's owner and let him do what needs to be done, but this is a show, not a game, so you just watch the wonderful writing play out.
C.) The genetic mutation vault. Vaults do have sick messed up crap in them, that's a fact and yes there is genetic mutation in a series all about radiation, but a human lady birthing out baby monsters (gulpers) that devoured her alive... Still, never seen a Vault in the games do that. Might be a poor excuse on my end, sure, but I could've gone without seeing something as disgusting as that in my life. Also the Vault's weird cult crap with people "exposing their chests..." The Fallout games are rated-M, yeah, but never feature full nudity... I don't wanna see naked people in Fallout, if I did, I'd install mods lol. But I digress, this is HOLLYWOOD's Fallout, so I suppose they can do whatever they want with it for the sake of their "artistic vision." Again, something I'm obviously not a fan of, if someone else is, well that's their thing.
2. Oh, but Fallout has tons of s*x jokes!!!
True, the games have jokes like that especially in New Vegas with things like Fisto, the reprogrammed Protectron. Fisto, to me, IS funny because its well-written. In my opinion, Obsidian's writing was leagues better than Bethesda's Fallout games. Thank Chris Avellone and the Obsidian team for that. Fallout 4's came off very bland, boring, and inoffensive. New Vegas in particular had wonderful writers and all their jokes and innuendos were good. The TV show's attempts were nothing more than miserable Hollywood "idiot humor." The whole "wanna have s*x?" scene will never be funny, at least to me anyways. It think it's just stupid.
3. Lore doesn't matter/ it can change!
I myself have never been one to get too invested in lore of anything, but I do appreciate it when creators of a series at least try to keep things in check. While it might "not matter" for some people, you can't take that away from those who enjoy it. Lore itself is an important building block to create a strong foundation of a fictional world that fans can invest in. When lore is subject to change on a whim whenever the creators desire then it makes it harder for fans to immerse into said world. Why bother getting invested if everything you learn will only be altered constantly? Unless someone only cared about the quick thrills and enjoy things only in the moment, which is fine, I suppose, but doesn't mean everyone does.
Sure there exists many crappy live-action video game adaptions, but typically the original video game creators don't ever mention them let alone acknowledge their existence as they're made simply for "cash grabs." Take the Resident Evil movies, dime a dozen, crap adaptations, nobody really cares about. Fallout's on the other hand, while maybe its purely speak on Todd Howard's behalf, but he insists that the Fallout TV show is "canon" to the universe and will be followed through in Fallout 5. Paired with the fact the show creator said in an interview that he wasn't out to make a show to please fans of the games, saying "It's a fool's errand." Rightfully so that can make fans very upset when said show tramples on years of lore built up from previous games. Especially from the ORIGINAL Fallout games that Bethesda had nothing to do with. Disney and Star Wars is another great scenario of this.
I can fully understand why Bethesda does that though, as they're just trying to make A.) a fun game and B.) make money (more-so on B. now-a-days...) Prioritize game first, lore later. Many games do that, The Legend of Zelda games are a big one that come to mind. Like I said, I'm not a huge lore guy, but Fallout is one of my favorite series, so I appreciated it when they tried to keep things somewhat cohesive and respect the lore that came before.
End/ Final Thoughts
I still think the show is mediocre at it's very best. This is just the opinion of some guy who's liked Fallout for 14 years starting with Fallout 3. Gave the show a shot, didn't like it, not a big deal. It's not the end of the world or anything.
The show obviously wasn't made for people like myself and that's okay. If someone else likes it, good on 'em. Keep having fun and don't let me or someone else stand in your way of enjoying the things you like, but at the same time don't disrespect someone's opinion simply because they don't feel the same way as you.
"Some people just plain don't respect others, and that's a no-no. If there's one thing I won't tolerate, it's lack of respect." - The King (Fallout: New Vegas, 2010)
With all that said... I'm very tired. I didn't come back to Tumblr to argue stupid opinions over a freakin' Amazon Prime series of all things. If anyone wants to watch a good full review, I recommend ItsAGundam or SyntheticMan's on YouTube. I found them to be very good honest reviews from long term fans.
Remember to be nice to each other, respect opinions, etc. etc. Now I'm gonna go back to doing something fun like playing Minecraft or Sims.
Peace ✌️
#last post on the Fallout show#dumb#if you want a real review go watch ItsAGundam on Youtube#or SyntheticMan's review#both are great

Fallout 3 is a fucking joke. After buying the rights from Interplay the new devs got hard at work at the least ambitious post nuclear questline ever. With story beats happening in locations that would work better in pulp novellas (ten pages each at most), so bland with no interconnecting culture, and yet they are all connected by blandness. Did you miss the gutpunch from Fallout 1 that starts with you aspiring to be the hero of the wasteland and ends with you being told you're too dangerous to remain in your home vault? Well here's a sidequest that does that in 30 minutes. The only thing Bethesda didn't take from Interplay was the satire of Fallout 2. Everything is played completely straight because they think they're being bleak like Fallout 1. I can't even laugh at getting the AI of the president to kill himself (I hear Bill Clinton was offered the voice role) with how obsessed the narrative is with American history, the most grating being the plot of the formerly enslaved and the Lincoln memorial.
I don't have a good ending for this post. Leading into criticism of the other Fallout games is best left to those who saw their narratives to the end. I can say that I want my anger to be fuel for seeking out indie tactical rpgs to support, and I hope you do the same.

Wasteland 3 was on sale a little while back and I've been wanting to play that since I saw it existed. Most people don't know this game series existed. Those who do, know it from fallout, and probably never touched the games before. Those who know it from fallout know it from old fallout. Back when they was 2d and played like a point and click that threw the simple item puzzles into the sun and decided to dungeon master a dnd game but with guns and robots. Plus, the original game is archaic and has graphics that more resemble a board game than a video game, and the second game came out like 20 years later. I mean I'm all over ancient and archaic games, and I only have managed to ever scrape my way through half of that thing. I even used a guide. I beat zelda nes without pulling a guide out until that teleport maze in the final dungeon.
So anyway, wasteland 3 is now my favorite rpg, and I've been reevaluating a few of my projects because of it. I have a number of games that can be loosely crammed into the definitions of RPG. And I missed something crutial with my party based one: specialization. Now I missed wasteland 2, but my previous favorite rpg was fallout 1. And that game only let you directly control and stat manage one character. You could get companions, but they didn't factor into things the same way. Wasteland, having always been a game where you control a team of post nuclear idealists with government issued integrity, does not let you make a god teir character like in fallout. The third game makes you make a team. This team can and will be more effective than any single player rpg protagonist for a number of reasons, and it is very hard to fuck it up. I love the shit out of how well they get this across. Like, I could go into depth about how wasteland 3's opening bit is one of the best tutorials ever crafted. Rides a real nice balence of understanding what players might expect going into that, making them rethink their approach, and showing off just how fun and rewarding that all can be. Sort of un-hack-and-slashing the rpg system, while also making sure to be as brutal and rediculous as possible.
Funny thing is, I already kind of understood the importance of this kind of specialization when designing concepts for a real-time tactical third person shooter. Trying to lean into the mmo tank, healer, hitter trio that seems so inexcapable. Healers and tanks are tricky, if possible to do in wasteland 3 though, and that's what I think is really facinating. As far as I can tell, you can't do that without fundementally changing how these kinds of games function, but this does it pretty well, at least early on, and I'm trying to work out exactly how? Healers are somewhat negated by the fact that it's hard to play that kind of support role. Meaning every character that would be put in risky situations frequently, has to be capable of healing themselves. Tanks are less viable cause the combat relies a lot on cover and damage mitigation by default, meaning everyone again, kind of has to do all of that themselves. I think what's going on is what happens outside of combat.
Wasteland stats are funny, cause they were a fucking mess in the 80s game. You had to roll the damn characters, then tag a number of skills. And it was not clear what all of them did. And half of them might not actually do anything. Fallout used a similar system, with atributes and skills, but in a much more coherent way. The details of the SPECIAL system has been praised before, just know it used to be significantly more in depth than the nonsense in fallout 3 and onwards. Wasteland 3, and from what I can tell, 2 as well, uses a similar system, this time spelling CLASSIC cause tradition at this point. Comes complete with perks and backgrounds to further customize your rangers with little tweeks like doing more damage in exchange for getting hit for more damage, or getting more action points when you kill an enemy. The long winded point I was getting to is that the vast majority of skills are not combat skills, but exploration skills. Arguably, the only reason combat skills are seperated out so much is to keep everyone using different ammo pools. If you want a good balenced squad, you want one, maybe two combat skills per char, and the rest going into stuff like the speech and trading skills, repair and computers. Maybe some weapons experts or power armor mechanics. Cause these let you avoid fights. Or at least help getting better gear and the jump on things you have to fight.
Game isn't perfect, but it's by far one of the best designed crpg's I've ever touched, and very fun in a lot of ways. Almost makes me actually enjoy math. That's hard to do. I only math when I need to, and it takes all the energy my two brain cells can squeeze out.
And like, drawings here later maybe. I keep not drawing as much as I want to. There's a ton of cool stuff I'd like to show off, but I didn't get around to sketching the mf's out yet. Hopefully I get around to doing that and whoever's here can look at more than my badly structured ramblings.

What Happened on September 2 in Australian History?
September 2 has witnessed several pivotal events in Australian history. These events range from significant sports achievements to crucial international agreements and economic developments. This article explores notable occurrences on this date, examining their impact on Australia and its role in global affairs.
What Happened on September 2 in Australian History?
New Zealand Beats Australia in Rugby Union (1905)
On September 2, 1905, New Zealand triumphed over Australia with a score of 14-3 in the first international Rugby Union match held on New Zealand soil at Tahuna Park in Dunedin. This historic match was notable for its challenging conditions, including cold and wet weather, which tested the skills and resilience of both teams.
The game marked a significant moment in the history of international rugby, showcasing the growing competitiveness between the two nations. New Zealand’s victory was a testament to their strength and skill in the sport, while Australia’s performance highlighted areas for improvement. The match set the stage for future encounters between the two teams, fostering a deep and enduring rivalry in rugby.

ANZUS Pact Signed (1951)
On September 2, 1951, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States signed the ANZUS Pact, a critical treaty aimed at ensuring mutual defense and security in the Pacific region. This agreement was a significant development in post-World War II international relations and defense strategy.
The ANZUS Pact was established in response to the growing geopolitical tensions of the Cold War. By formalizing their defense cooperation, the signatory nations sought to bolster their collective security and deter potential threats in the Pacific. The pact played a vital role in shaping the defense policies of Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, and has remained a cornerstone of their strategic alliance.
Great Britain’s Nuclear Test at Christmas Island (1958)
On September 2, 1958, Great Britain conducted an atmospheric nuclear test at Christmas Island as part of its broader nuclear testing program during the Cold War. This test was one of several conducted by Britain and had significant implications for regional and global environmental concerns.
The atmospheric tests at Christmas Island drew considerable attention due to their impact on the environment and public health. The fallout from these tests contributed to international debates on the safety and environmental effects of nuclear testing. For Australia, the tests underscored the need for stronger international regulations and agreements to manage and mitigate the risks associated with nuclear activities.
Mike Troy’s World Record Swim (1960)
On September 2, 1960, American swimmer Mike Troy set a world record in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:12.8 at the Rome Olympics. Troy’s performance earned him the gold medal and was a significant achievement in the world of competitive swimming.
Troy’s record-setting swim was notable not only for its technical excellence but also for the competitive field that included Australian swimmer Neville Hayes. While Hayes did not win the gold, his participation highlighted Australia’s strong presence in the sport. General Fallout gripe: it is weird how often the games assume that all drug use is recreational, rather than performance-enhancing. It's particularly weird, given that the only illicit drugs in the original game were performance-enhancing - steroids (Buffout), study drugs (Mentats) and some sort of secret rage-inducing military concoction (Psycho).
Nominally recreational drugs started appearing in Fallout 2 with Jet (super-meth with a side of shrooms). 2 also featured characters discussing other drugs - weed, coke, peyote - but they didn't appear as in-game items. A few more fun-style drugs have been added since then - Daddy-O, Day Tripper, and such - but they don't get as much attention as the Big 4 of Buffout, Mentats, Psycho and Jet.
So, people talk about using these chems to party, and assume the player does too. Troike in New Vegas says that his standard Saturday night entertainment is Buffout. Hancock in 4 says his favourite indulgence is Mentats. And... I'm not a drugs person, really, but are people really taking steroids to have a good time at the club? And, even if they are, why would they assume that's why the player is using them?
The player doesn't experience any of the pleasures their character is experiencing when they use chems, any more than they can taste the food their character is eating. They're most likely just using them to increase their stats - to pass a check, or do more damage in combat, or whatever. In short, as a performance enhancer. I assume that's why all those drugs discussed in 2 didn't actually appear in-game - because they wouldn't be useful stat-increasers and so didn't make sense to include as, effectively, RPG potions.
I feel like this might come down to maintaining a sense of familiarity and brand recognition - everyone knows Buffout et al. are the Fallout Drugs, so they get plugged in everywhere drugs are needed in the story, whether or not it makes sense. Plus, using the made-up, silly-sounding names helps avoid another morphine/Med-X fiasco (thanks to my country's ridiculous government and its persistent terror of any technology newer than the rotary telephone.)
In which case, well, credit to 4 for inventing some suitably-sillily-named recreational drugs... and I can only attribute it to that game's famously uneven design that it then failed to properly feature them in its story or draw much attention to them at all. I'd be interested to know who made them, who uses them, how they work! But, we got nothing - apparently, they're much less popular highs than combat enhancers and Ritalin.

This achievement comes shortly after a fan took it upon themselves to bomb Spencer’s in-game campsite. Xbox content creator Rebs Gaming noticed a new achievement on Spencer’s profile and speculated that the CEO is gearing up to launch a retaliatory nuke against players who targeted his camp. The game’s narrative requires players to secure launch codes, enter a silo, and engage in combat to launch a nuke. While this process was once challenging, it has since become more streamlined with accessible launch codes shared on fan sites. Although Spencer has yet to unlock the “I Am Become Death” achievement for launching a nuke, he remains silent on recent Xbox layoffs and their rationale. It will be intriguing to see which development unfolds first. Despite the high stakes and virtual drama, it's important to remember that these events are part of the gaming experience and not reflective of real-life animosity. The gaming community continues to demonstrate creativity and engagement by incorporating role-playing elements into online interactions.
