Agusta A109A [ZE410] by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: c/n 7144 Built 1979 for the Aviacion de Ejercito Argentino (Argentine Army) and served with them as AE-334. She was allocated to Escuadrón de Aviación de Exploración y Ataque 602 and was deployed to the Falklands during 1982 to support the Argentine invasion of the Islands. She was captured by British Forces at Port Stanley racecourse on 14th June 1982 and subsequently transported to the UK on HMS Fearless, arriving on 13th July 1982. She was then taken directly to Yeovilton and placed on display in the Fleet Air Arm Museum by the 20th July 1982. In 1984 she was given the British military serial ZE410 and employed by 8 Flight of the Army Air Corps (see details below). Retired in 2009, she was stored at Middle Wallop before joining the museum in 2014. She is on display wearing the civilian type colour scheme worn when serving with 8 Flight. Army Flying Museum Middle Wallop, Hampshire, UK. 21st August 2020 The following information on ZE410 while serving with 8 Flight is from www.eliteforces.info:- “This helicopter was one of two captured from the Argentinians during the 1982 Falklands Conflict. Other A109s were purchased and bringing the 8 Flight fleet up to 4 airframes. This secret AAC unit was stationed at Hereford to provide the 22nd Special Air Service (22 SAS) with a dedicated rotary air wing. The A109s of 8 Flight used civilian-style paint jobs in order to blend in with normal air traffic, enabling SAS troops to move covertly on domestic operations. One of 8 Flight's roles was to support 22 SAS's counter terrorism mission. 8 Flight A109s could be fitted with a roping frame to facilitate fast-rope insertion by the SAS Special Projects Team. This frame, fitted above the port cabin doorway, allows for a Mk4 deplaning rope (40 ft, 50 ft, 60 ft or 90 ft length) to be attached and used. The frame features a Quick Release Mechanism (QRM) which allows for the rope to be disconnected in an emergency. 8 Flight switched to a fleet of AS365N Dauphin helicopters in 2009. The unit itself expanded into 658 Squadron AAC in 2013.”
