(Part 1) Film & TV Recommendations for Halloween
1. Over the Garden Wall (Miniseries, 2014)
Over the Garden Wall features two half-brothers, Wirt and Gregory, who have become lost in a mysterious wood called The Unknown and attempt to find their way back home.
...
This beautifully crafted animated miniseries is the best thing to come out of Cartoon Network even after ten years. The unique atmosphere, which blends fairytale charm with Gothic eeriness, perfectly compliments the early 20th-century Americana-styled animation. At just ten episodes, Over the Garden Wall is a short but impactful experience that lingers with you long after it ends. I highly recommend this series.
2. Coraline (Film, 2009)
Wandering her rambling old house in her boring new town, an 11-year-old Coraline discovers a hidden door to a strangely idealized version of her life.
...
This stop-motion animated film is a deeply unsettling and visually stunning experience. Blending a dark fairytale narrative with otherworldly imagery, it presents itself as a psychological horror for young and older audiences alike. Coraline explores the complex ideas about family, identity, and the dangers of wish fulfillment with grace. I strongly recommend this film.
3. ParaNorman (Film, 2012)
Norman Babcock, a young boy who can communicate with ghosts, is given the task of ending a 300-year-old witch's curse on his Massachusetts town.
...
This heartfelt stop-motion animated film blends humor, horror, and themes of ostracization and acceptance. While blending classic horror movie tropes with a coming-of-age story, it manages to portray strong themes of prejudice by using zombies, witches, and ghoulish imagery. If you're looking for a unique spin on classic B-movie horror, I highly recommend this film.
4. Happy Death Day (Film, 2017)
A college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity.
...
Happy Death Day is an entertaining mashup of slasher horror and Groundhog Day-style time loop storytelling. This film stands out from all the rest of the horror-comedy franchise due to its emotion, mystery, and character growth. While it doesn't push boundaries for horror, it makes up for its uniqueness that balances humor and suspense. If you're looking for a horror-comedy film, I strongly recommend this one.
5. Jennifer's Body (Film, 2009)
A newly-possessed high-school cheerleader turns into a succubus who kills her male classmates and devours their flesh in order to survive.
...
Though it was sorely misunderstood when it originally came out, it has recently garnered rightful attention for its subversive take on the horror-comedy genre. This film blends teen drama and supernatural horror and uses its genre to touch upon the objectification of women in horror and in reality. Its wit, self-awareness, and social commentary have made it a standout in the horror-comedy genre, and for that, I strongly recommend this film.
6. Sinister: Recut (Film, 2012)
Ellison Oswalt is a struggling true-crime writer whose discovery of snuff films depicting gruesome murders and strange supernatural elements in his new house puts his family in danger.
...
Said to be one of the scariest films ever from a research study, Sinister is a deeply unsettling horror movie that perfectly mixes supernatural elements with psychological tension. The haunting score combined with the grainy, nightmarish footage of the murders results in an unnerving experience that sits with you long after you turn the lights out. Instead of watching the original movie, I strongly recommend this fanedit version of the film. It elevates the movie by removing some of the cheesy jumpscares and awkward dialog. If you're looking for a genuinely haunting movie this Halloween, I recommend this one.
7. 1408 (Film, 2007)
Author Michael Enslin, who specializes in debunking paranormal occurrences, checks into the fabled room 1408 in the Dolphin Hotel in New York City.
...
This film excels in building suspense, using minimal special effects, and relying on our main characters' isolation and psychological unraveling to create fear. While this movie isn't as overtly terrifying as other horror films, 1408 offers an eerie, slow-burn experience, blending supernatural elements with personal trauma. The film has two different endings, the theatrical version and the director's cut. I'd suggest watching both to come to the conclusion of your favorite. It's a must-watch for fans of psychological horror, and I strongly recommend this film.
8. Midsommar (Film, 2019)
A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.
...
This is a visually stunning and disturbing horror film set against the backdrop of a bright, idyllic Swedish village. The movie stands out for its unique approach to horror, unfolding almost entirely in daylight, creating a sense of unease through its striking visuals, unnerving atmosphere, and slow-building dread. Midsommar is a polarizing piece of media, mixing folk horror with psychological drama, and is filled with symbolism and unsettling imagery. I highly recommend this film if you're looking to be disturbed this Halloween.
9. Skinamarink (Film, 2022)
A young brother and sister wake up during the night to discover that their father is missing and that the windows, doors, and other objects in their house have vanished.
...
Skinamarink is an experimental analog horror film that trades traditional narrative for a surreal, nightmarish atmosphere. Shot in grainy, low-light cinematography, the film immerses you in a disorienting and eerie world where fear of the unknown takes center stage. The film’s strength lies in its ability to evoke childhood fears, using abstract visuals and unsettling sound design to create a sense of dread. However, its unconventional approach may alienate some people who expect a clear plot or resolution. The minimal dialogue and deliberate pacing make Skinamarink more of a mood piece than a traditional horror film, relying on atmosphere over jump scares. For those willing to embrace its experimental nature, Skinamarink offers a haunting and disquieting experience that lingers long after it ends, tapping into primal fears of isolation and helplessness. For all these reasons, I highly recommend that you check out this film.
10. Heck (Short Film, 2020)
A child wakes up in the middle of the night to the sound of his mom's television blaring.
...
Heck is a short film that shares a similar atmospheric approach to the creator's feature-length film Skinamarink. Like Skinamarink, it explores the feeling of being trapped in a surreal, dreamlike space. The film's minimalist aesthetic, with grainy visuals and a haunting soundscape, creates a disorienting atmosphere that leaves much to the imagination. It builds tension through its slow pacing, relying on the viewer's discomfort with the unknown rather than traditional horror tropes. For people who thought Skinamarink's runtime was excessive, Heck is a great substitute that captures the same atmosphere of the former. I highly recommend this film to people who have enjoyed Skinamarink's take on horror.

hello hello, re-l!!
Do you read books outside of fanfics? Or if mainly fainfics, what inspirations do you have? I'm looking for stuff to read, but I mainly only ever like reading your stuff and two other writers🤧
If you have any books or authors that inspire you, I would love to know!
Ofc, no need to respond if you don't want to! ^^
hello hello icarus!!! 💕
i am a huge reader! have been since elementary school and i’ve always been ‘that’ cousin who brings a book to family get-togethers! so i do have a tons of recommendations for novels and short stories!
(but before that, my inspiration for fanfiction is mostly stockpiled in my ao3 bookmarks)
i‘ll try not to include novels that are mostly high school or college required reading. while i did enjoy some of them immensely, what’s the point of rec-ing something if the chance another person has read it is already pretty high! so here’s a list of novels/short stories that i personally adore:
1. grendel by john gardner
it’s about 10 chapters on a paperback so a relatively short read; told from the perspective of the villain in the beowulf legend — it anglo saxon like king arthur so you know it’s my cup of tea
changed my life truthfully; i’m still waiting to get my ‘grendel had an accident, so may you all’ tattoo one day :)
2. master and the margarita by mikhail bulgakov
a decently sized novel and it’s by a russian author so you know you’re in for a good read; plot line is about the devil and his entourage visiting the officially atheistic soviet union.
tells a lot about the volatile state of censorship and how we must preserve through it, excellent social commentary on one of my favorite historical time periods
3. life of pi by yann martel
a story about a young Indian boy, my beloved protagonist ‘Pi’, who explores issues of spirituality and metaphysics from an early age.
cannot be more grateful to have read this; it made me sob at the end like a little baby and i am known for being very stoic and difficult to make cry.
4. beasts by joyce carol oates
fun story about this one, the only reason i read it was because my dad and i were cleaning out his large library together (i inherited the mental disease of writer from him) and i was in my senior year of high school about to start looking at colleges …
he hands me the book and says ‘read this before you go to college’ and then he took a moment before firmly saying ‘don’t fall in love with your professors’ i was floored.
5. something wicked this way comes by ray bradbury
oh fahrenheit 451 is his best book … oh ray bradbury’s a one hit wonder … no i refuse, everyone should read this. really gives ‘floyd and jade in playful land’ vibes
//short stories
6. i have no mouth and i must scream
i have cognito ergo sum tattooed under my boob, ENOUGH SAID!
7. white nights (clogged in a collection of other short stories)
patrick read this aloud for me once, a very peaceful memory of mine <3
8. the disappearing act (clogged in a collection of other short stories)
inspired one of my favorite twilight zone episodes <3
9. 1408
i would include all of stephen king books on this list but we would be here forever, here is an underappreciated gem!
10. cigarette (clogged in a collection of other short stories)
yukio mishima the writer that you are OTL OTL OTL

as a stephen king haunted hotel film, it is simply intuitive to compare 1408 (2007) with the shining (1980)—a move made by critics, marketers, and even the cinematographer in a handful of visual homages—and yet the comparison yields interesting results. although both films deal with the isolating liminality of hotels, drawing parallels between that uncanny limbo state and the limbo state of an uninspired author, the shining (1980) draws its horror largely from the untapped and unknowable expansiveness of the setting, whereas this film focuses more on claustrophobia. on this point i applaud the film. although the cinematography is somewhat weaker and less interesting than what i would usually expect from benoit delhômme, his camera work and the beautiful work of the set designers and gaffers provide not just variation but life and personality to the very small, bottle episode-like set, keeping the film visually engaging despite the strict limit on the number of visuals. in terms of visuals and in terms of story, as well, the film manages to keep the audience reliably well-stocked with surreal situations and psychological thrills. unfortunately, the film’s pacing is somewhat lumpy, especially in the first act’s very self-conscious transition from the real world to the magical world. the film clearly was going for the surreal and associative storytelling used to great effect by kubrick and tarkovsky, but it almost seems as though the director was not enough of an auteur to pull it off; as the film bows to stephen king’s favorite themes and the test audience’s reactions, rogue plotlines distract from the director’s vision and weaken the overall effect. a father-son plotline is somewhat resolved in the director’s cut but is largely unaddressed in the final version of the film, and from the protagonist’s entry into the room until about the halfway mark the film is cluttered with a disneyland-like rotation of clumsy thrills almost perfectly sculpted to be cut into a trailer. although it cannot manage coherent enough emotional stakes to match the shining (1980)’s celebrated, satisfactory, and cathartic ending, 1408 (2007) does have a lot of good moments to offer, and i did enjoy watching it

book to screen adaptations i actually do like
gone girl (there's some things i wish they'd included, and i wish it'd been a miniseries, but it's a damn good adaptation)
looking for alaska (admittedly i never did watch the final episode and a half for some reason, but i was vibing with it -- despite their changes, it was clear they really got the spirit of the book)
sharp objects (phenomenal miniseries that made me like the book more)
room (2015) (i think this one speaks for itself)
we need to do something (admittedly i saw the movie first but it does the book justice for sure)
ramona and beezus (looking back, this movie makes some weird changes i'd be interested to analyze -- but i have so much nostalgic affection for it)
the diary of a wimpy kid movies, live action (have not seen these in many years, but once again, they understood the assignment)
the samantha, molly, kit, and felicity american girl movies (one could argue that the samantha movie improved upon the books with a more cohesive emotional arc -- although idk why they changed the kit plot soooo much when the books include kit breaking out of prison and lying on a train track while the train passes)
the lion the witch and the wardrobe (2005) (holy fuck)
the fault in our stars (have not seen this since i was 14 but i remember digging it)
goosebumps TV show from the 90s (rushes through plots of course but understands the assignment)
carrie (👌🩸)
the it movies (nostalgic affection once again)
shawshank redemption (once again saw the movie first and it'll forever be one of my favorites)
1408 (omfg i love this movie so much)
the midnight club (it deserved a second season)
matilda (kind of like it more than the book)
coraline (need to explain?)
holes (they did a great job)
charlottes web from the 70s (watched religiously as a small child)
because of winn dixie (i dislike some of the changes -- the animal shelter showing up scene traumatized me as a child -- but it stays faithful in a great way)
the spiderwick chronicles (prob cheating cause i saw the movie first)
alexander and the terrible horrible no good very bad day (is it faithful? not really but i had fun)
the babysitters club TV show (this singlehandedly reignited my investment in the bsc in my early twenties)
judy moody and the not bummer summer? (idk i remember enjoying this as a kid)
speak (2004) (i wish it was longer but this is a Good Adaptation, never say kristen stewart can't act)
#books#not including movies i like where i haven't read the book#but feel free to ask me abt book adaptations and why i don't like them

i dunno if this has already been requested or not but im on my hands and knees for No.10: The Staunton Lick with btaa!scarecrow 🙏 (love your work btw finnie you’re so talented!!)
🎀 No.10: The Staunton Lick 🎀
give me a character and i'll make a mini playlist for them a/n: oh good LORD i had the most fun with this so thank you so much for that and for the sweet compliment ;-; 💚💚💚 1k milestone info! 🔞minors dni🔞 • kofi • tag: finnie1k
i think jonathan's music choice would be accompanied with a brief lecture on how important it is in relation to how much fear and horror it can provide. for a song to be on his "enjoy" list, it has to either be jaunty enough that he can imagine it playing as he goes about his business or just magically creepy enough to evoke a sense of absolute terror when he hums it quietly 💚
perfect day - lou reed
there's so much melancholy in this, but it's also so beautiful, so it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth that's kind of enjoyable. also, reaping what you sow, it's a good message
eagle rock - daddy cool
used perfectly in the soundtrack to wolf creek, it's an absolute joy when a song so filled with joy can become so synonymous with the dreadful feeling as we fear what's to come after it's finished playing
wonderful, wonderful - johnny mathis
used perfectly to denote the arrival of fear in a particular episode of the x-files (season 4, episode 2, "home") the smooth romance lends itself nicely to that creepy feeling that comes along with nostalgia
main titles (beetlejuice soundtrack) - danny elfman
this is the perfect "driving to work/crimes/drug deals" music. it just gives any journey an added bounce! and isn't that michael keaton just super hot when he's betelgeuse? far more than he is in any... other... roles
twilight time - the platters
there's nothing more romantic than the dark of night, the shadows, the cool air, the all-consuming black, or calming purples and morose blues? this is the kind of thing he would dance to at a wedding
in dreams - roy orbison
if you can get past the imagery of the clown at the beginning, this song is actually far more terrifying than first glance might suggest. the loneliness, the desperation, losing someone and only having them in your imagination? absolutely deranged and unhinged romance
music box (the candyman soundtrack) - philip glass
if he were ever cursed to be responsible for a child, somehow, god forbid, this would 100% be the lullaby that played for the little cretin. it would set them off right in life
just - radiohead
is this really just wishful thinking? maybe jon isn't as much of a jigsaw-esque villain as he'd like to think. sure, people choose to take drugs, and sure they choose to sell them, but is it really a choice if the alternative is dying, starving, desolate and threatened?
i put a spell on you - screamin' jay hawkins
this is the kind of song he would listen to if he was really feeling it, like this is in his house on a saturday morning, eating pastries in his pants kind of music. absolute joy with a hint of wild attitude and the threat of control. very much jonathan crane
we've only just begun - the carpenters
i think jonathan is a sucker for nostalgia, for soft, romantic songs that can be manipulated and distorted and changed to make them send chills down your spine, which is what happens with this in the movie 1408
#finnie1k#nobody talk about how my irl playlist is so heavily influenced by the xfiles#finnie writes

anyone but him, anything but this
anyone but him, anything but this

Langa knows how badly Reki wants to leave, because he’s always restless. Restless and bright and beautiful and always moving, bursting with energy. And Langa…
Langa is breathing too fast. Langa is sweating, shaking, clenching his hands into fists as his vision blurs. Langa is nausea and nerves and tear-streaked cheeks. Langa is trembling so violently, terrified as reality and memory blurs together. Again. Again. It’s happening again.
Langa is breaking, shattering apart like glass, because the last time someone he loved was in one of these beds, they didn’t come out of it.

the thing about 666 park ave is that i dont think its a good show. its the best show in the world but its not good. that being said i would recommend it to:
people who enjoyed the building mystery from netflix archive 81 and didn't mind some of the sillyer plot twists
people who are neutral to positive on season 2 of girl from nowhere
people who liked fall of the house of usher the teevee show. so they can see some quality television
1408 movie enjoyers but not necessarily 1408 short story purists
people who love dan browns da vinky code
house of cards enjoyers. presumably. i fell off that show i think around the halfway mark
people who can tolerate the writing of the later hannibal seasons. gods strongest soldiers.
bad horror movie enjoyers
i havent actually seen the shining the movey, but i have read the book and im like Aware of the movie, so tentatively the shining the movey enjoyers or at least tolerators
like 3% of the succession fanbase. frank succession is in it for like an episode in porhaps the funniest way possible
the original book this is very loosely based on says grown up gossip girl fans lol and i think theyre right
