The fact that Lorde has not one but TWO covers that are like babes I think this is actually better than the original. Swingin Party and EWTRTW. Miss Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, the legend that you are…
Like I know the point of EWTRTW is that it’s the dissonance between the standard 80s pop beat and the semi dark lyrics but playing it completely straight as a dark ballad one step removed from being a Disney villain song is so iconic we should just give her the song.

[ad_1] New Zealand singer Lorde has shared a rare open letter with fans detailing her private struggle in recent months. The incredibly private pop star, 26, revealed she was currently living in London, where she was feeling homesick and “living with heartbreak again” in a lengthy statement seen by NZ Herald.Lorde – real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor – suggested she had broken up with her long-term boyfriend, music executive Justin Warren. The pair have been linked together since 2015.“I’m different but the same. I ache all the time, I forget why and then remember,” Lorde wrote in a note titled ‘How I’ve been, revised’, which was shared with her subscriber fanbase.“I’m not trying to hide from the pain, I understand now that pain isn’t something to hide from, that there’s actually great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I’m sick of being with myself.”It was thought the couple, who share a 17-year age gap, were engaged two years ago, after Lorde was seen wearing an engagement ring in October 2021. They were last seen together in Sydney in early May while Lorde was embarking on the Australian leg of her Solar Power tour.Lorde, who shot to fame as a teenager in 2012 with the release of her hit single Royals, also discussed her significant physical health issues in the letter. She said she recently stopped taking an undisclosed “little yellow pill” she’d taken daily since the age of 15.“My body is really inflamed. It’s trying to tell me something and I’m trying to support it but nothing seems to help and I get frustrated,” Lorde wrote.“My gut isn’t working properly, my skin is worse than ever, I’ve gotten sick half a dozen times. I realised earlier this year that listening to my body is hard for me, it’s something I never really learned how to do.“The little yellow pill I took every morning for thousands of mornings since I was 15, I stopped taking it five days ago. Gonna see how it goes.”Further, Lorde admitted to recreational drug use, including taking mushrooms which she said helped her discover “a lot of information about what my body had been through in our time so far.”She continued, “What it [her body] needed, where God was and where God wasn’t; I felt in my bones how destabilising it is to leave home and start a new life the way I did.” Elsewhere, Lorde admitted she texted her manager to cancel a recent appearance at Paris Fashion Week, fearing she was unable to fake a smile for cameras.“At the start of my career I promised myself I’d never be one of the people in the light smiling if it wasn’t real,” she said of her last-minute pullout.Lorde went on to discuss the role social media played in triggering negative thoughts. Currently, she has just two posts on her Instagram feed.“Everyone looks very thin,” she wrote. “Just thinking that makes me feel tired and far away. I’m not sure if it’s having an effect on anyone else.”The Green Lights hit maker added she planned to head back to her native New Zealand soon, as she was “starting to miss my friends and family, like a vitamin I‘m deficient in”.Despite the concerning email, Lorde assured her fans they needn’t “worry” about her.“I‘m gonna look back on this year with fondness and a bit of awe, knowing it was the year that locked everything into place, the year that transitioned me from my childhood working decade to the one that comes next,” she wrote.“I still laugh every day, it’s all moving, even when it goes slow. I’ve accepted the mission – I have a self to recover.”It comes as followers of the singer had been eagerly awaiting an announcement on new music.Lorde released her third studio album, Solar Power, to much fanfare in 2021, with the album marking her first drop in four years following 2017’s Melodrama. She recently confirmed she’s been working on a fourth album for some time, and hoped it would be finished sooner rather than later.“It has taken me quite a while [to start working on it]. I mean, I do just take a long time … I do a lot of research, I write a lot down,” Lorde told Ensemble in February.“Sort of a big chunk of work before I actually start writing music. So yeah, that’s been a really big part of it. It’s been super exciting and I feel excited about what’s coming.” [ad_2]

the beginning of the last of us game is set in boston. like you can actually explore a post-apocalyptic version of downtown boston. imagine living there and being able to see your city in a game. i’d lose my mind if they made one of those in mine, porto alegre, and i could see like a falling apart version of the public market building in downtown (not very far from reality. it caught fire like twice). but, like the neoclassical philosopher ella yelich o’connor says “we live in cities you’ll never see on screen; not very pretty but we sure know how to run things”.

The unfortunate thing about being a twenty-nine year old woman in your former local bar where you grew up surrounded by a group of old men who were your de facto babysitters as your mom left you on the old, sagged booth so she could go get you your latest stepdad (and then later on, you’d work at this very bar as you made it through college, listening to the same old men rant about how degrees were scams and you needed to lock down a husband and become a homemaker, like their own wives) was that, well, there were hardly any other twenty-nine year olds in the same vicinity at the same time.
People of all ages and backgrounds came for a drink at O’Shea’s, but the demographic Phoebe should have been socializing with were usually a Friday or Saturday night crowd. Generally, she didn’t mind when she had work to do, and since returning from her retreat had been playing catch-up with her internship work, as well as digitizing her journals she filled during her week away. But then, there were times like today, where she would make (what was in her opinion) a funny reference, and there was no one around who would get it. She was seated in between Randy and Ralph, currently fighting about some fishing trip that happened back in 1968 (and why it was only an issue now, in 2024, was anybody’s guess), and Phoebe, half paying attention as she typed up her latest chapter, simply rolled her eyes and jested: ‘Geez, you two, you need to work it out on the remix.’
A good twenty minutes later, after confirming Lorde wasn’t in fact our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but a Kiwi woman named Ella Yelich-O’Connor, and XCX were letters and not some secret conspiracy that Charli was tricking the children with, she had just gotten into the meat of the origins of the song’s existence. She was still transcribing from her journals as she spoke, barely even looking at either men, only because she was really behind. Besides, being a quasi-professional yapper meant that Phoebe was blessed with the talent of multitasking, often finding even the most mundane chores could go quickly if she just talked all the way through them.
She was explaining the ‘same hair’ lyric and how the two pop-stars were often confused with one another when another male’s voice chimed in. Looking up, Phoebe vaguely recognized the man, having seen him in here a few times, though he hadn’t quite reached regular status yet. This was evident by the way both Randy and Ralph held a steady, steely glare at him, as if he were some sort of threat. Phoebe ignored them.
“Completely unrelated I guess?” She glanced at her laptop. “I’m just, well, I guess I am transcribing, but like, just my journals. I, uh made a joke that needed further context.” Before she could say anything else, Ralph chimed in at that point.
‘None of your concern what the little lady is up to, why don’t you go back to scrawling in that notepad you always have on you, hmm?’
Except for an eye-roll at the old man, Phoebe once again ignored him, impish smile on her face as she addressed the other man, gesturing to the pad in front of him. “Whatcha jotting down in your notepad? A transcript of our conversation?”
x. status -> closed for @thephoebeyates x. location -> o'shea's why are you even asking at this point
Far be it from him to judge anyone’s alcohol preferences, but Antonio can’t help wondering why so many people enjoy the taste of vodka. He can appreciate it for what it is — a means to an end, that is — but when it comes to taste, surely literally every other alcohol in the world surpasses it by miles and miles. It seems every time Antonio glances back up at the man bartending today, he’s pouring some more vodka into a glass. It’s gotten to the point where he’s begun to doodle the bottle itself in the margins of the prose he’s attempting to write, a fanciful distraction in the face of rhyming block.
No one’s asked him to write this song. It’s one of those he’ll never finish — he’ll start it, optimistic that maybe he’ll get somewhere this time, then he’ll abandon it as soon as something more profound than what he’s ready to face on paper crosses his mind. He’ll let it gather dust with the rest of his unfinished verses, somewhere in the bottom of his bedside drawer. Though he supposes it’s something. More than he could write sober, anyway.
He’s shading the bottle illustration with his pen when his ears perk at someone mentioning the names Lorde and Charli. Two names he’s familiar in the industry, of course, especially since he’s started moonlighting as a pop songwriter. But mostly, what catches his attention is the fervor in which the names are being spoken, almost as if they’re stumbling right over the other. Antonio peeks to his right and finds a young woman — can’t be more than twenty-one, if she’s allowed in here — with her laptop situated in front of her, seemingly explaining something about the pop stars’ most recent single. Toni can’t help the small twitch of his lips in amusement — he misses being this passionate about something. Even if it is for something as frivolous as a pop song.
Moreover, she’s doing this while seemingly also typing away on her laptop, a feat that impresses Toni so much he has to pipe up when she seems to finally end her conversation with the two men. “Sorry, I have to ask,” he leans forward a bit, a curious expression on his face. “Were you…transcribing your conversation? Or were those two things,” he gestures between the laptop and the two older men. “Completely unrelated?”
