TRACK REVIEW: Off Balance - Carl Green In Particular
Tumblr media
Following the quintessentially quirky Off Guard, Carl Green has released his final EP of 2023: Off Balance. With a vocal likeness to Paul Heaton, Carl proclaims messages of love, bitterness and anger; a wonderfully eclectic mix of tales. Opening with The Union Hotel, a dreamy vibe creates a feeling of far-off, protected memories. Carl professes the importance of living in the moment as events are occurring, romanticising a relationship and the world of the Union Hotel. Arguably the best track of the whole ensemble is Algorithm and Blues: a critique of social media algorithms and how we are conditioned to feel as a result of the gaze of society. The track as a whole has an electronic and distorted feel to it - as though trapped within a computer screen - just out of reach from the rest of the world. Good Job You Screamed contains fast-paced strings and sparse piano notes which create an unsettling feeling of pressure. Tension builds up throughout the track as Carl describes the anger involved during a break-up, especially with the other person lashing out and victimizing themself. The closing track, Fine Arts Student, discusses the nature of an artist parting ways with the world of art due to society's now normalised standard of what 'art' must be. It questions why we must put 'art' into boxes of good and bad allowing it to lose all sense of creativity and freedom of expression. Once again, Carl has created a beautiful collection of songs, though all with a similar, quirky style unlike his usual genre-defying creations.

Sacred Celtic Trees 2.0
Tumblr media
Many moons ago, I did a series on the mythos surrounding the Celtic Tree Calendar- but since rebooting my account, I've lost that post. As a way to get back into the swing of things here in sharing what I know about witchy business, I've decided to rewrite these articles- and a great place to start is with an overview of the calendar as a whole!
Nature has always held a profound place in human cultures, often serving as a source of inspiration and guidance. Among the various traditions that celebrated the natural world, the ancient Celtic civilization stands out for its deep reverence for trees. In Celtic folklore and mythology, trees were considered sacred and held immense spiritual significance. Join us on a captivating journey as we delve into the sacred Celtic trees, unraveling their symbolic meanings and exploring the wisdom they imparted to the Celts.
The Celtic Tree Calendar:
The Celts embraced a unique concept known as the Celtic Tree Calendar, which divided the year into 13 lunar months, with each month being associated with a specific tree. These trees were believed to possess distinct characteristics and offered insight into various aspects of life. Let's explore a few of these sacred trees and their symbolic meanings.
Oak (Duir):
The mighty oak, known as "Duir" in Celtic, represented strength, endurance, and wisdom. Revered as the king of trees, the oak was associated with the god Dagda, embodying power and protection. The Celts believed that oak groves were gateways to the Otherworld, the realm of spirits and magic.
Rowan (Luis):
The rowan tree, symbolized by the Celtic term "Luis," held deep protective qualities and was associated with the goddess Brigid. It was often planted near homes and entrances as a ward against evil spirits. The rowan's vibrant red berries were considered sacred and were believed to possess magical properties.
Hazel (Coll):
Representing wisdom and knowledge, the hazel tree, called "Coll" in Celtic, was highly regarded by the Celts. It was associated with the mythical Salmon of Wisdom, which gained infinite knowledge by consuming hazelnuts that fell into the sacred pool. The Celts believed that hazel trees held the key to unlocking hidden wisdom and spiritual insight.
Yew (Ioho):
The yew tree, known as "Ioho" in Celtic, symbolized death, rebirth, and immortality. Ancient Celts planted yew trees in sacred spaces like burial grounds, considering them as guardians of the spirits of the departed. The longevity of the yew tree and its ability to regenerate from within the trunk represented the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
Birch (Beith):
The birch tree, associated with the Celtic term "Beith," represented new beginnings, purification, and protection. Its slender branches were used to create besoms (ritual brooms) for spiritual cleansing. The Celts viewed the birch as a symbol of hope, renewal, and the promise of a fresh start.
Elder (Ruis):
The elder tree, symbolized by the Celtic term "Ruis," was considered a sacred guardian of nature and the feminine energies. Often found near ancient Celtic wells, the elder tree was associated with healing, protection, and intuition. Its flowers and berries were believed to possess potent medicinal properties.
The sacred Celtic trees serve as a reminder of the profound connection between humans and the natural world. They provided the Celts with guidance, inspiration, and a deeper understanding of the cyclical nature of life. Exploring the symbolic meanings of trees such as the oak, rowan, hazel, yew, birch, and elder allows us to tap into the wisdom of our ancestors and rediscover our own connection to nature. As we honor these ancient traditions, we can gain a renewed appreciation for the beauty and significance of trees, fostering a deeper sense of harmony and respect for the world around us.
By delving into the realm of the sacred Celtic trees, we embark on a journey of spiritual awakening, embracing the wisdom that has transcended time and continues to inspire and guide us in the modern world. Let us remember the whispers of the wind through the branches and the gentle sway of leaves, as they carry the ancient knowledge and magic of the sacred Celtic trees. Stay tuned for a daily deeper look at these trees, their biology, history, mythos, and different uses for them both in witchcraft and natural medicine!
