now, I'm making a couple jumps here: that they didn't leave the shards on the hoopty, where b2 was murdered, that it shattered into pieces and not, like, dust-

but we've established that evan can, in the lack of a physical form, haunt his shadow. he left a body-not human, sure, but also split apart. open and defenseless. the body of an evan ripe for the picking for some enterprising entity in sore need of a physical form

just watched the barbie movie everyone was discoursing about last year and I can't help but feel like a lot of the problems in its execution could have been avoided if the kid character's arc had been about learning to embrace girly stuff as an act of rebellion against the adultification of teen girls while barbie went full butch transmasc

I'm glad I made you into a Shuggy enjoyer!!! But, with all due respect, I don't know where the whole "Shanks doesn't care about Buggy" thing comes from. In fact, I believe it to be the other way around?

In their childhood, Shanks was the one to look after Buggy constantly even when the tiniest of things happened. We see Shanks bothering Buggy for his attention, then staying with him when he's sick to take care of him (instead of going to Laugh Tale), also Shanks asking Buggy to go sail with him... And that's not something a rejection like Buggy's and years can erase.

They might not be together now but that doesn't mean Shanks doesn't care about Buggy. In Marineford his mood changes drastically when he sees Buggy and he goes back to teasing him like always but not in a malicious way, but in a "back like the old days" kinda thing. His mood also changes in the worst way when people ask about Buggy.

We don't have much content of them as adults now, but if I had to choose which one cares more, it'd be Shanks (and also, his whole character truly is about caring and protecting the ones he loves). Not saying Buggy doesn't care (he does) (he literally won't stop mentioning Shanks, lmao) but his resentment and envy blind him enough to turn that care into hatred and rivalry so it isn't as obvious.

We as a fandom have turned Shanks into a guy who's completely obsessed with Buggy for laughs and because it's cute, but it really isn't that far from the truth because the few moments we have of them in canon it's always Shanks looking after him and Buggy trying to reject him.

I don't wanna sound mean or condescending, sorry 😭💖 I just don't know where the perception of Shanks not caring comes from...

one of my favorite linguistic things is the difference in tone when using contractions vs not using them. like “there’s” holds a very different cadence to me than “there is,” at least in certain contexts

Hmm yes what's that. Oh, we'll have Sam be forced by the writer to put on an act of secretly desiring her attacker in the hopes that it'll make him not violently murder her? Wow that sure is edgy and fraught with tension. No I don't see a reason to question whether we've got a good handle on how to write a teenage girl. Why would you say that?

(And the irony is that if you set aside the tendency to have the threat of sexual predation and harassment hanging over her like some particularly messed up Sword of Damocles, I do think that this is the first book since Genocide to really do a noteworthily solid job at capturing Sam's thought processes and characterisation. So, like, I genuinely want to praise those elements! Why do we have to throw in all this other cod Sawardian sexual violence nonsense that we all kinda agreed played a big role in getting Michael Grade to can the show in the first place?)

I saw your posts about the newest Underverse episode and I want know why you thought Core Frisk was manipulative to Ink. I am really curious because Core Frisk was kind and telling the truth.

mmmm I just don’t trust them. Kind is not how I would describe their demeanor. And I’m honestly not sure if “telling the truth” is a good way to describe it.

They weren’t telling the truth, they were putting all the responsibility on Ink’s shoulders while they and Dream will probably just sit on their asses for the rest of the plot. “You’re part of this story now-” he’s BEEN part of this story, wdym??? Like genuinely Core and Dream have done nothing outside of 0.6 seemingly by choice (at least on Dream’s part, Core can be made a case for pre-0.6 anyway).

The reason I specifically describe them as manipulative is the way that they seem to be puppeteering a lot of these half-baked “redemption arcs”. They sat back and watched Cross struggle while having the attitude of someone watching a movie, they did not actually care. They also set up Fresh to fuck Ink’s shit up and I do not care who the hell you are or what the hell your motives are, if you specifically set someone up to be fucking possessed by a parasite that could have possibly KILLED THEM (at least temporarily considering how Ink’s vials work), you are not to be fucking trusted.

Them trying to force these “redemption arcs” on Ink and Cross in VERY weird, creepy, and inorganic ways is really off-putting and upsetting to me. Dream is also part of this too, his attitude doesn’t sit right with me and yanking Cross into the Omega Timeline against his will was a dick move. Ink and Cross don’t actually seem like they’re better off after these situations either.

Do I think they’re supposed to be a bad guy narrative-wise? No. But I do not like that they’re being weird and manipulative and it’s being framed as a good thing, this is honestly an issue I have with Underverse’s narrative broadly. We’re not supposed to question their actions because they’re supposedly the good guys, but…

Simply doing stuff “for the greater good” does not instantly justify it.

ESPECIALLY when most of what they’ve been doing has been literally fucking nothing.

Edit: wrote this when I was in a bad mood, Core and Dream are obviously doing a lot of things on the side and they deserve credit for that. It’s just that their behavior when engaging with other main characters reads as… very weird, like really off putting.
