#Ds9 had issues with shoulder pads too but that was mostly a form of suffering reserved for Julian's costumes

something I'd like to add is the newer costumes are LESS functional and practical. They're stiff, tailored to the 9s, padded, and they use a pattern that would be a pain to sew (I know this doesn't matter as much because it's implied replicators have no practical restrictions wrt fabric and clothing even though I don't think that makes sense). They are not easy to move in- lifting your arms looks like it'd be awkward due to where the shirt ends and the shoulder pads. If they're laundered, they likely need special care. It's pure aesthetics and worse, I think the aesthetics of the new uniforms are ugly. The TOS uniforms also aren't the most practical, but they're still easy to move in and the shirt is paired with obviously higher waisted pants so it probably won't show your stomach. The raglan sleeve pattern is simple enough and the velour/wool looks like it's washable, without too many metal or padded bits that require careful washing.
(And frankly I think Starfleet uniforms don't get the "you can replicate more" excuse. Fleet personnel get stranded, taken prisoner, have severe technology malfunctions, etc often enough even in peacetime that Fleet uniforms should still be designed with the fact that one may loose access to a replicator for an extended period in mind)
SNW never should have updated the uniforms to that degree…. Wouldnt it have been fun to keep everyone in frumpy sweaters and work around it??…. Fabric patch starfleet insignia… turtlenecks…retcon them into being super futuristic environmentally adaptable space wool or something if you have to. I am a huge believer in the good qualities of intentionally strange costume design. “Ooh it doesnt look functional!!” You say. Need i remind you we are talking about star trek. “Ooh it doesnt look GOOD!” Need i remind you we are talking about star trek.
#Ds9 had issues with shoulder pads too but that was mostly a form of suffering reserved for Julian's costumes#They aren't as obvious or weird looking on anyone else#And their second uniforms were still practical and make sense aa war time wear- they're jumpsuits with two underlayers that can easily be#Removed and laundered (if one does not have a replicator at hand again- more likely in war)
