So Hotel Portofino is this show that's, like, what if Downton Abbey was about an English family who owns a hotel in Italy during the rise of fascism. Oh and also, what if some of the main family were absolute assholes.
The characters are all pretty one-note and sometimes quite stereotypical. It's got real white upper class sensibilities. The good guys are good and the villains are villainous. The snobs are snobby and the cook is opinionated...so on and so forth. Like, 99% of the cast are white. There are two people of color in it...and their characters are also quite flat and stereotypical.
But also, it's got Assad Zaman in it playing a gay WWI vet with an unrequited crush on one of his fellow soldiers (who happens to be the son in the family that owns the titular hotel).
It's a fun little watch if you don't take it too seriously.
ETA: Okay well, the first season is fun. The second season is pretty fun...except that *spoilers* they bury their gays right at the end. smh. I haven't seen the third yet...but it sounds like Assad Zaman isn't in the 3rd season so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(Content warning for domestic violence and a surprising amount of blood)

no one asked but here's why I hate Thomas's relationship with Guy Dexter in the last film
it's just so rushed and forced. Guy basically proposes after one conversation, which was just Thomas hyping him up. He doesn't know anything about Thomas as a person nor does he care, Guy only views Thomas in relation to himself, as someone to serve him
and I can't believe that Thomas would stand for that. even just going from a butler to a valet is a major demotion for him, but to have to act as his lover's servant is absolutely not the basis of a healthy relationship
that's what Thomas wanted with the Duke in the pilot episode, but he has matured so much since then. he fought so hard to gain respect, climb the ranks and hold his position at downton (god knows why he was so determined to stay, but he was)
for him to throw all that away to be some hollywood actor's 'wife' undermines his entire character arc. it puts him right back at square one where his highest aspiration is to lick his sugar daddy's boots
sorry let me rant about downton abbey 10 years later
Thomas's conversion therapy plot pisses me off so much. firstly, it's incredibly out of character. he never wanted to change to conform to society, he wanted the world to change to accomodate him. the man who said "it's not against the law to hope is it" and "I'm not foul, Mr Carson, I'm not like you, but I'm not foul" would NEVER
secondly, from a storytelling perspective, the only 'problem' is that he used infected needles. did we forget that Thomas was a sergeant in the RAMC? he knows how to sterilise needles and how to recognise and treat infection. this also shifts the blame to Thomas himself for getting sick and implies that the conversion therapy itself is harmless (Dr Clarkson says it's just saline solution)
thirdly, it's not historically accurate. I'm not an expert but conversion therapy was not at all common in the 1920s, even Sigmund Freud was against it. hormone therapy and chemical castration were barely developing let alone available to the public (I can't imagine what else the 'treatment' was supposed to be). the only practices that I can find evidence of were psychoanalysis and electric shock therapy
Thomas also mentions that he did electric shock treatment - if you really want to make a point about homophobia in the 1920s (and make Thomas suffer as much as possible), show that instead. watching him be literally tortured for his sexuality would have been far more impactful than him just... looking sweaty for a few episodes
#Thomas would thrive as a bitchy hollywood househusband but he also deserves a loving relationship. I hope Guy can give him that but#we don't see them interact enough to establish it. I do appreciate Dominic West looking like he wants to devour him though#others have said this but I want the whole plot of the 3rd film to be the Crawleys visiting them in America and Thomas being a bitch about#anyway I miss Richard. they should have been endgame </3#thomas barrow#downton abbey

SIR TIM LAURENCE APPOINTED KENT CRICKET CLUB PRESIDENT FOR 2025
Published Friday 26th April 2024
Kent Cricket is delighted to confirm that Vice-Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence KCVO, CB, ADC(P) will be the Club’s President once more in 2025.
Sir Tim was originally appointed as the President for 2020, the Club’s 150th Anniversary Year, but the outbreak and management of the COVID-19 Pandemic hampered both his Presidency and the Club’s celebrations. He will succeed Judy Ufton as Club President on 1 January 2025 until the end of that calendar year.
Sir Tim has a strong connection to Kent and a lifelong passion for the game. Having been brought up in Ightham, he was educated at Sevenoaks School, where he was a key member of their 1st XI, batting at the top of the order with former Kent captain Chris Tavaré and former Kent Director of Cricket, Paul Downton.
He attended Durham University, where he represented his College cricket team. Upon leaving Durham, he completed his initial training at the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth. During his distinguished naval career, Sir Tim commanded four warships and held several Ministry of Defence positions, including Chief Executive, Defence Estates.
Since his retirement from the Navy in 2010, Sir Tim pursues a number of non-executive and charitable interests. These included being Chairman of English Heritage which has many historic sites across Kent, Vice Chairman of The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and a Trustee of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and HMS Victory.
Sir Tim will be the Club’s eighth multi-year President after The 3rd Lord Harris (1870-71), A.C. Norman (1914-18), The 4th Lord Northbourne (1930-31), Major H.S. Hatfield (1938-45), Sir Edward Hardy (1957-58), Lt. Col. W.O.H. Joynson (1959-60) & Lady Kingsdown (2015-16). He will be the first Kent Cricket President to have more than one year in the role inconsecutively.
Kent Cricket’s Chair, Simon Philip, said: “We are delighted that Sir Tim has accepted Presidency of the Club once more after holding the post five years ago.
“Our 150th Anniversary Year and Tim’s presidency did not turn out as planned and so it is great that Tim will now be able to enjoy fully being President and we will be able to benefit from his input into the Club and our Men’s and Women’s cricket.”
Sir Tim Laurence said: “It is both an honour and a privilege to be asked to take on the Presidency for a second time.”
“I much look forward to becoming more closely involved with the Club again and to providing whatever support and encouragement I can.”
#exciting!!!#very glad he will get a second go at being their president#tim laurence#timothy laurence

Matthew & Fernando, Henry & Tom, Stanley & Louis, Matthew & Hamish. There are some wonderful, supportive, nurturing and enduring male friendships in Matthew Goode's back catalogue. I also love all the actors who portray these characters, the chemistry they have with Matthew is fantastic.
Which is your favourite relationship? I find it very hard to chose but I have to say Matthew de Clermont's friendship with Hamish Osborne, simply beautiful 💚.
Here is some bonus Henry Talbot
🍀Manifesting🍀 Henry to appear in the 3rd Downton Abbey movie! Stop faffing around with cars Henry and get yourself back to England to charm us all, we are bored!

Downton Abbey Fashion 29 - festive occasions in the 1920s
There are times when the Crawleys wear a sort of outfit that I tentatively want to call “semi-formal”? They leave the house in these, so it’s not exactly an indoor look, and it’s day wear, not evening, but it’s often more lightweight than a coat or walking suit, and the optics go more in the direction of their garden fashions – light, mostly pastel colors, flowered hats, loosely falling robes… The occasions in question are 1st, Mary’s wedding, 2nd, a family picnic at Eryholme which at that time might become their new home, 3rd, Edith’s little disaster of a wedding, and finally, the baptism of Sybil junior.
The only occasion for which Violet bothers to get a new outfit is Mary’s wedding; for the others, she repeats a few of her already-established coats. This is stylistically familiar though, and in fact she combines it with a tulle-wrapped hat she’s worn before. I do love the cream coat; can’t quite tell the material, but it’s something softly shiny. And then she goes all extra on the cuffs and hem – this trim is easily five or six inches of piping flowers and ferns.
--------------
Remember when I said that Martha doesn’t really cross the line into tasteless? Well. I’ll admit it: This one is kind of tacky. Lady, tone down the fur and velvet; this is not a winter wedding. Admittedly, the turban-like head wrap is something I would have enjoyed a great deal more in an evening setting. Martha loves her some quirky 1920s headdresses. But for the day, the plumage seem a little much.
--------------
For her son’s wedding to Mary, Isobel got a lovely light blue walking coat that she repeats later for the Eryholme picnic, if with a less frothy hat. What I find funny during the wedding is that the cream collar with the darling birds-and-flowers embroidery makes Isobel look like she coordinated with the random extra next to her, a nameless lady in cream with a similar embroidery motif on the lapels.
--------------
Cora wears this long lavender coat for Mary’s wedding and for Sybbie’s baptism, a pretty rose-patterned damask with a long plain collar. I think this is supposed to be a matching set with the dress she wears under it, a lilac number with a velvet sash. The main variation between the wedding and the baptism is that for the former, she wears a ton of white fabric flowers on her hat and another huge one pinned to her lapel, whereas for the baptism she’s way more toned down, nothing on her lapel and the flowers on her hat much smaller and darker. Granted, that baptism has an overlap with mourning time.
Despite financial hardships, Cora can afford new hats all the time. What do you know. I kind of like the pleated design of the crown here, but not the overall shape if that makes sense. The sandy walking suit with the giant folded lapels will transition into her everyday wardrobe in season 4, although by then she picks a rather less flattering hat to go with it. I don’t know what these buttons are doing down there; they sure aren’t shutting the coat in any meaningful way. They just look nice, I guess.
This is Cora’s get-up for Edith’s wedding, and it has to be the first time I am aware of that the hatband was actually made to fit the cardigan. See? That’s the exact same flower embroidery. And back with a ton of white flowers on her hat. I like the jacket, but the outfit overall is a bit unspectacular, as is to be expected from a wedding guest who’s not to outshine the bride. Would probably pop more if she wore that over a red blouse.
--------------
We’ll get to what Mary wears to her wedding in a separate post, but for Edith’s wedding, she shows up in light blue chiffon and what I think is a layer of white lace. The drop waist sash, the sleeves and the hatband are all the same material, all pastel on pastel plus pearls; it’s all very rich boring white people. But at least it’s flattering. Edith gets fucked over by her outfits for these occasions.
Granted, Mary’s baptism look is really dowdy. Why is she dressed like her mother-in-law? This dress tries to do something with lavender and purple piping, but the placement of it doesn’t do much to enhance the outfit. I think she stole her mother’s jewelry again though; this is the exact necklace Cora was wearing with her beige picnic coat above.
--------------
Why. Why did they put Edith in this for Mary’s wedding? At this point, her sense of fashion has developed so much that this stupid, unflattering granny dress looks dissonant. She’s wearing a sack with a big flower on it. And what’s with the plump pin tucks in the skirt? They throw this so off balance. Ugh, anyway. The hat is quite lovely.
I found the last dress so ugly that this one, which she wears for the baptism, is already an upgrade. The color is not for Edith imo, but the drop waist has a patterned sash that is kind of nice, and while the sleeves look baggy, it at least has a pretty neckline.
--------------
Sybil got a rather nice look for Mary’s wedding. Why couldn’t Edith wear something like this? The color and weight is similar, blue chiffon, but the scarf matching the dress looks way more elegant than that strange embroidery. Any additional color is banned to the hat embroidery, which looks cute but less grand than those of her relatives because Sybil isn’t about that life anymore.
Her hat for Edith’s wedding has pretty much the same shape, the brim widening to the front and curving a bit up to form something akin to a bonnet, but it’s white with a lilac ribbon to match her dress. This dress is quite similar to Mary’s for the same event, chiffon with floral white lace, but it has some additional trim with an under layer in a darker purple, and the skirt has a little gathering on the side.

Okay!!! Washed my face, did skincare, moisturized my arms and legs, moisturized my hands like on Downton Abbey, put Tide shit in washing machine and started a cycle, put Liquid IV in my 3rd liter of water, ate half a turkey sandwich with tomato and greens. Prepped breakfast (other half of turkey sandwich), lunch (half a veg wrap), and dinner (lentil kale soup). Have enough bottled water and Liquid IV for the day tomorrow, have errands planned. I am trying SO hard to take care of my terrible horrible no good very bad body but I will be complaining the whole time

I didn't even recall it but we also had Lord Merton with a wrong diagnosis so that's three examples of his own work froom which Julian Fellow's can draw. I guess people were right when they said it couldn't just be resolved by the 3rd episode without it going poorly. Another theory I have seen floating around is that Oscar is basically getting scammed by Maud and the Van Rhijns will be ruined but Luke is a secret millionaire and by inheriting said secret fortune the tables turn and it's Ada who takes Agnes in (as she often likes to remind her sister). Give Luke pernicious anemia and let he and Ada be!
I'm very curious how this is all going to go too. Being a "Downton Abbey" fan I kept thinking of ways this could go as it really could be anything. LOL And we haven't really gotten that many spoilers. I hadn't seen that theory about Luke possibly getting an inheritance and helping out Ada and her family. I love him and Ada together and seeing a couple that got together later in life and just hoping they can find happiness. Plus I love Robert Sean Leonard too and I've seen too many of his characters die so would be nice if that doesn't happen here.
