nicest beaches we know
we did a review of dune: part two as our main article for the substack, so as a thematic spin-off we made a list of the nicest beaches we know (because we’ve been there):
1. stormalong bay at disney’s beach and yacht club resorts, walt disney world (united states)
a lot of people traditionally picture beaches as the sandy (or pebbly) spots where you spend time outside of the water. if you’ve clicked the link above, you’ve obviously seen that stormalong bay is categorised as a swimming pool. however, and it’s a big however, this swimming pool feels like a miniature water park - including a beach that transitions into the more lively elements, like a waterfall pool. still, the fact that you can feel the sand under your toes keeps you feeling beachy.
2. kamari’s “black” beach, santorini (greece)
kamari has much to offer - its historic dig site hosts what assassin’s creed: odyssey would like to tell us is home to atlantis, for instance. its black beach is better for folks who have less time. sure, the sand isn’t legitimately black (the only time we’ve ever seen that was in sri lanka, after the 2004 tsunami, so not a great memory). but it’s eye-catching, and this beach is a peaceful place in the off-season. visit between november and april for low crowds, but also few amenities.
3. preethipura beach, wattala (sri lanka)
colombo itself doesn’t have the best location for beaches - galle face and its adjacent “beach park” are far too urbanised and inauthentic to qualify for this list. drive out to wattala though, and you get more of a view. colombo’s skyscrapers grace the horizon, but the soft sand underneath feels more than just a couple of miles away. by now the genuinely black sands of the christmas day tsunami have washed away, leaving crystal clear water hugging the pristine beige shoreline.
4. hengistbury head, dorset (united kingdom)
about two miles east of bournemouth, is christchurch, a beautiful little town, which has marshes and a river mouth that connects to hengistbury head, a far superior beach to what bournemouth can offer. it takes nearly an hour to traverse its mile of undisturbed smooth sands and dunes. Its most easterly point offers ferry access to mudeford harbour. it’s the most quintessentially english spot, but shockingly desirable, with some of the beach huts, which have no amenities, available for weekly rent of up to £600 a week. if you’re going to visit, you’ll find it you can do it as a day visit or stay a few towns in land much cheaper (my childhood association with the area was down to us having a caravan). worth the view of its cliff sides full of nature reserves though!
5. seven mile beach, grand cayman
there isn’t a whole lot of culture to dig into on grand cayman, the largest of the cayman islands. its beaches though? they are spectacular. the caribbean has truly earned its reputation for white, fine sand and turquoise, yet transparent water. seven mile beach is walkable, providing several hours worth of beachcombing entertainment, and you can easily swim, or depart on a snorkelling adventure from there. avoid hurricane season, and ensure you have some kind of shade alongside sunscreen for protection.

You know what was absolutely insane about staying in a Disney resort? No access to Disney+ on the TVs. I’m not even saying I think they should offer it for free**.
No. I’m saying my mom and I both have our own Disney+ accounts and we just wanted to spend our evenings watching some old favorites since we were at Disney-freaking-world, and we had to use one of our laptops because there was no way to even access the Disney+ app on the television in the room.
The hotel I’m currently sitting in will let me log in to Netflix on their TVs and this hotel isn’t owned by Netflix.
Anyway, it was just so bizarre to be paying so much for a “moderate” resort (we stayed at the Caribbean Beach resort) and not even be able to access the Disney app with my own login information while sitting in a building literally owned by Disney.
(I know this is the first-est of first-world problems. I just figured they would use the opportunity to maybe nab some sales from people who don’t already have Disney+ accounts. Maybe once a day, there’s a pop-up prompting you to add a month of Disney+ to your hotel bill. Like, this could be used to boost sales and they are sleeping on the opportunity!)
** I mean, I do think all Disney resorts should offer free access to Disney+ for the length of your stay. Most families will have some downtime at some point and being able to stick a movie on is nice. It’s basically just giving people who are already spending five quadrillion dollars on Disney things a week-long free trial, but whatever.

My hobbies include getting into weird arguments with strangers online about Disneyland vs Disney world.
Also idk who keeps saying that Disneyland is a locals park. Bruh it’s fucking not. Half the people we meet when we go are not even from this country let alone Southern California.
The current discourse is the alleged confirmation that they will build something Avatar at Disneyland and how “no one wants this” (maybe true?) and how “people can just go to Florida to see pandora” (buddy if I live on the west coast, which I do, do you know expensive it is to fly to Florida? Last time we went I had to miss an extra day at work because our flight got so delayed we got stuck in salt lake at like 11:30pm at night and had to stay at a hotel and come home the next day)
I’m gonna be real here. As a life long Disneylander, Disney world is only good for: 1. About 8 rides unique from Disneyland’s 2. About 10-15 unique restaurants 3. Several cool, unique resorts 4. Merch exclusive to those parks (and tbh some of which I can buy from resellers)
So we went in 2013 for my college grad and that was our first time and we did the private safari (highly recommend) and took one day to go to islands of adventure. We did a LOT of stuff (not the water parks) and my favorite park then was Epcot bc of how unique it was.
Then we went again in 2018 and my favorite park was AK because of expedition Everest and Pandora and seeing the flamingos. And of course I loved all the shopping and restaurants.
We were planning to go this year but due to my friends’ health problems are pushing it back to next year hopefully and the stuff I’m looking forward to (besides showing my friends who have never been what’s up) is: 1. Cosmic rewind 2. Tron 3. Flight of passage (and pandora generally) 4. My beloved tower of terror 5. Every single restaurant I can get my hands on 6. All the merchandise 7. Staying at a different resort (we did French quarter and Caribbean beach the last 2 times) and 8. Expedition everest (almost forgot)
Like as fun as the rides are if’s almost exclusively about shopping, food, and cool places to take photos of. Which is also true of DLR but DLR has the dinkiest shopping area, very few super cool unique dining experiences, and the same 3 hotels. And at this point I’ve been to DLR so much I’ve taken photos of like. Every thing. Ever.
ANYWAY TLDR
North America and the US are quite large and a lot of Americans, me included, do not want to trek all the way to the other side of the country so yes, I would not be surprised if DLR and WDW continue to share attractions, restaurants, and experiences.

Dress: Cara Cara Maidstone Printed Cotton Voile Midi Dress ($595.00) | Sandals: Jimmy Choo PALM 120 Sunkissed Liquid Metal Leather Wedge Sandals (£495) | Handbag: Ulla Johnson Tulip Raffia Basket Bag ($425.00) | Necklace: Sorellina Il Sole 18K Yellow Gold Necklace ($9,000.00) | Hat: Etro Frayed Straw Sun Hat ($325.00)
This week’s outfit is all about Disney’s Caribbean Beach. I decided to go with this light pink dress with the island motif as the pastel colour reminded me of the buildings of the resort and the pattern is just so on-theme.
Pairing the dress with the straw hat, sandals and raffia handbag creates a cohesive Caribbean vibe. With the golden sun necklace as the finishing touch, this outfit transports you to the heart of Old Port Royale. As the sun dips below the horizon, strolling through the resort, this ensemble elicits the carefree spirit of island life.
The rustle of palm fronds in the breeze provides the perfect soundtrack to sunset in paradise. After all, isn't that what a trip to Disney’s Caribbean Beach is all about - escaping the daily routine and losing yourself in a dreamy island escape?
