What is your Undertale AU about?

- I just made some changes to the concept and story. Monoctale or Undermonoc; as the name suggests, is an AU where each character has a monochrome version of themselves, meaning a single color (black-white-shades of gray). Each character's monochrome version reflects differently in reality; a psychological distress experienced by the character can create their monochrome version, or a rare power deep within their souls can cause them to exist semi-physically, for example.

For example, the formation of the monochrome versions of some characters: Asgore: Asgore is a character with Multiple Personality Disorder in this AU. The way we separate him from the monochrome version is; We divide his name into two as "As-" and "-Gore". "As" is Asgore himself, the first and only personality that should exist in the body. "Gore" is Asgore's monochrome, aka his much more cruel version. Thanks to "Gore", Asgore was able to dare to take the lives of those little children. Making the barrier like this was actually "Gore"'s idea and "As" couldn't stop him and allowed him to carry out this cruel plan. At least the same thing didn't happen with Frisk. While "Gore" had killed other humans brutally, when Asgore was going to fight Frisk, "As" was in control and since he wanted Frisk to win, he fought in a way that Frisk could defeat him without using his real power, just like in the game.

Do you also have a Gravity Falls AU?

- Yes, but it was cancelled after Book Of Bill came out.

Hey sliver, remember when I said that Fabiana and Sabina should have their own spin-off animated series. I just came up with new additions for it!

1. The main setting of the show is having Fabiana touring around the world with her puppet theatre, visiting London, Paris, Monte Carlo, Constantinople, and even America

2. Each episode should have its own musical number just like Phineas and ferb or the ghost and Molly McGee!

3. The show takes place in a universe that combines both 1940s version and the 2022 remake version! So the characters will be a bit more accurate to the original Disney designs, along with a much better lampwick than the remake version.

4. Stromboli become the main villain of the first season after he escapes prison and forms a army of criminals to have revenge on Fabiana and even form allies with the coachman and his army of pleasure island monsters.

5. The show will also include some elements from the original book like catchfools town, that giant snake thing, the green fisherman, and the town of the busy bees.

6. The show will also have Fabiana discover a race sea monsters just like the ones in Pixar’s Luca.

7. Fabiana will also find an entire civilization of fairies along with the blue fairy.

8. Sabina, Fabiana’s puppet was a gift from her late grandfather before he passed away.

9. In the season finale, we see Fabiana reunites with Pinocchio as a real boy.

So much stuff to unpack!!!! Let's dive in - honestly, I'd love to see all of this if it were animated with the same care and attention as the 1940 movie (minus the typical 1940s xenophobia, of course), with painted backgrounds and vibrant colors. The remake was...bland at best, unwatchable at worst.

First of all, a better Lampwick is a priority - not even as a better person, but like,,,an accurate troublemaker, like in the Dutch Disney comics. He and Fabiana would headbutt so often, it would be very entertaining to see.

The Luca nod I would love! The fairies not so much, because I have seen enough of them ashjkfahkfshajhsfj but I'd love to see the sea monsters! I had Luca and Pinocchio characters interact myself, in my Descendants AU ☺️

Finally, musical stuff 💕💕💕 I LOVE musicals! I love characters bursting into song at random moments! Sign me the fuck up!!!!!!

So yeah, I'm on board. Sadly Disney will never give us this much quality now.

For the Disney/Pixar ghosts AU, here are some of the ghosts!!! Honestly, writing this out has motivated me so much!! Feel free to ask questions about this and/or offer suggestions. Not gonna lie, some of these were hard. 😞 I might post backstories and/or other ghosts later.

Miguel Rivera

Appearance: He first appears as a boy in a red suit and sombrero playing a bone-white guitar with a skeleton design. The first time you see him, he always looks perfectly normal. Until sunset, when he starts turning into a skeleton from the hands onward. At sunrise, he is completely skeletal with colorful markings all over and slowly reverses back until at sunrise, when he’s back to human. He constantly seesaws like this, which can be disorienting for him and others who spend large amounts of time around him. His aura is orange. When in danger, his sugar skull markings glow gold.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Music playing incessantly, increasingly aggressive dogs, and images of manically grinning skeletons just out of the corner of one’s eye. Feelings of vertigo also ensue.

Mirabel Madrigal

Appearance: Looks like she’s made of white candle wax, glowing from within. Has golden butterfly designs all over her body. Her eyes are two green lights in dark hollows. The light and color of the markings change based on what she’s doing. Her dress is multicolored and if you look closer at it, it appears to be thousands of tiny butterflies. They flutter when she gets agitated.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Cracks in the walls that can’t be fixed, items that look like somebody crushed them, plant life growing exponentially, animals behaving oddly, food tasting rotten and causing pain when eaten, cold winds and the feeling of rain, inexplicable sand, and vivid nightmares that always come true. Candles also snuff out in her presence.

Raya

Appearance: Partially stone. Constantly crying tears of crystal. Non-stone skin is wet and vaguely scaly. Glows light blue, though her eyes are dark purple. When agitated, a purple aura not unlike a Druun surrounds her.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Floating water, food decomposing faster, sharp pains, a feeling of drowning, paranoia.

Pocahontas

Appearance: Usually invisible. Sometimes appears as a silhouette of multicolored lines.

Unique Haunting Behaviors: Strange gusts of wind, unusual water behavior, aggressive animal behavior, and claims of ���trees glaring’.

Elsa and Anna

Appearances: Elsa is wearing her coronation dress, but colored like a mix of both her magic dresses. Her hair is down and her hands are ungloved with ice on her fingers that resembles claws, She has icy tear tracks running down her face. Anna is an icy statue who behaves like a Weeping Angel from Doctor Who.

Unique Haunting Behaviors: Constant chill, as well as patches of ice and frost forming randomly. For Elsa, this is accompanied by glowing crystal patterns, fire turning purple and flaring up, and vocalization that strikes when you least expect or need it. For Anna, it’s dreams of blizzards, followed by white streaks consuming the victims’ hair, markings resembling frost patterns appearing on their skin, an inability to get warm, and increasing apathy.

Hiro Hamada

Appearance: Wears purple armor with glowing red circuitry lines completely covering him. His face is completely obscured by shadows, except for glowing red eyes. A black pool of microbots flows around him.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Technology glitching inexplicably, computer code spelling out ominous messages, strange goop found covering everything, metal objects floating or being warped.

Ariel

Appearance: Covered in glossy scales in every shade of green, spiky fins on her forearms, hair moves like it’s underwater, her mouth is constantly moving, yet no sound is ever heard. Can switch between a tail or legs. Drips seawater continuously.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Water inexplicably turns salty, fish grow agitated, victims undergo sporadic periods of muteness, objects go missing, or other objects appear in their place.

Belle

Appearance: Composed of book pages with gilded writing. Wears a dress of pink and red rose vines. The roses typically glow.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Unremovable roses appearing and growing at an impressive rate, objects animating, books flying around. Victims report increased hair growth, particularly around the face, increasingly sharp teeth and nails, and growing aggressiveness.

Merida

Appearance: Covered in blood and her dress is tattered. Sometimes she looks like she’s been mauled by a bear. Fingers are tipped in bear claws. This does nothing to inhibit her ability to wield her bow and glowing blue arrows.

Unique Haunting Behavior: Claw marks everywhere, glowing blue lights, a child singing, wood objects sometimes look burned or broken. Holes will appear in objects like someone shot them with arrows.

Musician with Poison Tears (Epilogue)

Miguel Rivera’s been fascinated by the story of the legendary ghost, the Musician with Poison Tears, since he was a kid. He’s always wanted to know the full story behind the weeping specter that haunts the train station with its invisible guitar. Now 18, the travels to Mexico City to try to observe the ghost from afar and get some clues about its origin. Who knows? He might even get a song out of it.

Héctor dropped his skull on the desk. “How many more are there?” he grumbled into the freshly signed form. He never imagined death would involve so much bureaucracy.

“I’m sorry, senor,” said a woman who called herself a ‘recently deceased special cases manager’, “but hauntings require a lot of paperwork, especially after how long you lingered.” She gestured at the massive file with his name on it.

He lifted his head, eyes narrowed. “I didn’t want to linger.”  

“No one does, but that doesn’t change a thing,” The case manager dismissed, laying another form down in front of Héctor. “This one is a poltergeist activity report. On this, check of any objects you interacted with along with the typical type of interaction. Examples include smashing vases, moving chairs across the floor… that sort of thing.”

“But I couldn’t even touch anything.”

“Oh, that makes things easier.” She drew a line down a row of boxes and had him sign again. “Now, this next one is about interactions with paranormal investigators.”

Héctor stopped listening and let his eyes slide to the door. HE wondered what would happen if he simply walked out. Could they stop him? Was there a punishment? An amused smile came to his lack-of-lips. What could they do? Kill me?

“Senor Rivera…” The case manager glared down at him like a schoolteacher scolding a naught student. “We have a lot to get through and it will all go faster if you pay attention.”

Héctor sighed. “When do I get to see my family?” It was the only thing he cared about since he arrived in the afterlife. Hell, it was the only thing he cared about for a century.

“Your family was called down to the department when you arrived. You can see them as soon as you finish your paperwork.”

“So, another century?” he said, eyeballing the pile of paperwork he still had to get through.

“I demand to speak to the person in charge!”

The shout came from outside the room. Héctor knew that voice. “Imelda?” He got up from his chair.

“Senor,” the manager called as he walked out of the room. “You haven’t finished yet. Senor?”

He followed the voice to the open area of the Department of Family Reunions. There he saw her. She was older than he remembered and, like everyone else, a skeleton, but there was no doubt about it. The warmth that filled his ribcage confirmed it was her.

She was surrounded by family members he didn’t recognize. He could only assume they came about after he died. But there was one among them, an old woman with braided pigtails, who looked familiar. His phantom heart dropped when he realized who it was.

“You called my family down here, saying we have a new arrival,” she yelled at the woman behind the desk. “I thought it was my granddaughter or my grandson-in-law. You’re telling me it’s my no-good husband?”

“I’m sorry, but that’s the name in our database,” the woman said, shrinking behind a strange white box.

“That’s impossible! Do you have any idea how old he’d be?!”

“It’s more complicated than that,” the woman explained. “You see, he was a ghost for some time. He arrived today but he died in…” she pushed some buttons on the strange box, “1921.”

Imelda’s jaw dropped. “1921?”

“Mamá, that’s the year he left for his tour,” Coco said.

Imelda shook the stunned look off of her face. “How did he die?”

The woman pushed some more buttons. “Let’s see, he listed his death as homicide via poison by… wait, that’s can’t be right…”

“What?”

“He listed his murderer as Ernesto de la Cruz, but he can’t mean the same…”

“I knew it!” Imelda slammed her hand down on the desk. “I always knew that man would only lead to trouble.”

“Mamá, when I was a girl, my friends would listen to Ernesto’s records,” Coco said, taking a step closer to her mother. “He’d sing Papá’s songs, but the record never had Papá’s name on it.”

“You’re saying he was killed over a few songs?” Imelda roared. Everyone with a right might cowered in fear. “When I get my hands on that spineless worm, he’ll regret every peso he made off of my husband.”

“I appreciate that you’d go to such lengths for me,” Héctor said, approaching the desk.

“You!” Imelda marched up to him and delivered a solid slap to his face. His skull spun all the way around. It was a strange new sensation to say the least. “Do you have any idea how long I waited for you to come home?!” she shouted.

“102 years?” he suggested. “That’s how long I’ve waited to see you.”

“Well, what kept you?” Imelda snapped. “You left so it was your job to come home.”

Héctor lowered his head. “You’re right. I wanted to. I was going to leave Ernesto on the tour and come home you and Coco. He toasted me on my way out, but he poisoned my drink. I died in the streets but my spirit made it to the train station. I was trapped there for a century before Miguel found me.”

“Miguel?”

“I met him.” Héctor could feel his won face light up. “I met Rosa and Abel. I met our granddaughter, Elena… If it weren’t for them, I’d still be trapped. They saved me. They set me free.”

Imelda’s face softened but she took a step back. She closed her eyes and he knew a battle raged in her head. It was a lot to take in, he knew. Accepting it would take time. Her eye snapped open, anger restored. “So what? You left me alone with a child to raise and-”

“Mamá,” Coco interjected, stepping up to them, “we should hear him out.”

Imelda’s mouth fell open. “Coco?”

“He’s been trying to come home all this time,” their daughter went on.

“And he’s only about a hundred years late,” Imelda snapped.

“I know you’re still angry, Mamá, but I’m not. Ever since I was a little girl, all I wanted was to see Papá again.” She took a few steps closer and smiled at him. To him, it was like seeing the sunshine for the first time. “Now he’s here.” She turned back to her mother. “He’s part of our family. I at least want to know what happened to him.”

Imelda’s eyes darted from Héctor, to Coco, to the rest of her family. They looked on expectantly, holding their breath for the answer. Finally, she sighed and said, “Fine, we’ll hear him out, but I make no promises about forgiveness.”

Coco smiled like she knew a secret. “It’s a start Mamá.”

She turned back to her father. Héctor wasn’t sure what to do first. His daughter was here, in front of him, for the first time in over a century. She held out her arms, letting him know it was okay. He dove in to hug her, holding her close. His heart hurt, it was so full of joy. His girl, his little girl, was here in his arms after all these years.

So much changed so quickly. Mere weeks ago, he was just another nameless specter. No family, no friends, no knowledge of the life he lived before. He thought he’d remain that way forever, doomed to that empty existence. Miguel changed all that; Miguel and the rest of his family.

Now he could hug his daughter again. He could feel his love for her and the love she had for him in return. He had a past, he had a future, and the present was beautiful.

As he held his Coco in his arms, the tears fell from his eyes once again.

“Miguel was very well aware of the fact that ghosts could affect their surroundings with their feelings, as they were projected as raw energy and technology tended to respond to energy on a general basis. He'd seen the lights flicker and some bulbs exploring before, whenever Hector began to realize something was amiss with his situation. Never before, however, had he actually seen his friend furious or, like now, completely unhinged. Hector had broken out of his loop, and he had not coped well. He'd been alone when he'd figured it out, unlike what Miguel would have wanted. He would have hoped to be with the ghost when that happened, so as to ease his distress. Sadly, Miguel had arrived too late for that. Now? Now he had to endure what the ghost dished out, hoping and praying to any god above that maybe his friend would exhaust himself and snap out of this rampaging state. Hector was so out of control that even his image flickered between something normal and something dead and then something in-between. Watching his flesh disintegrate and then reappear continuously was nauseating and beyond disturbing... But not as much as that hysterical laughter that sounded like a mixture of a coyote's cry, every creepy clown laugh in horror movies, and deranged sobbing. It made Miguel's head spin and his heart hammer against his rib cage, just from hearing it. More so than watching the ghost rip the station apart. After all, Miguel had always responded to sound more than he did to visuals. And this? This was a sound that not even La Llorona could match...“

And there we go! A very unhinged ghost dad having a complete breakdown while his teenage audience hopes to god that he doesn’t end up getting killed throughout it! I was inspired by a conversation I had with @melcecilia14, the creator of the Coco Ghost AU as well as the movie Paranorman which has a pretty good ghost scene. The expression I used actually came from an Expression Meme. Expression C2 to be exact. Hope you enjoy!

Hello!! IT (2017) IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF THEM oh man, thank you for this, I love talking about movies!!!! This is possibly the most difficult question you could have asked me. Apologies for how absolutely off the rails this got, I just... love movies so much lmao

I’ve said this before, but opening night of IT ch1 was the best cinema experience I’ve ever had, I’m so glad I got to see it with a fully packed audience who were all laughing and screaming together the whole way through. I’m a huge fan of... everything ch1 was doing, the 80s nostalgia, the summer-coming-of-age themes, the solid ghost train funhouse JOY of the Pennywise performance and scares, the washed-out cinematography, the tiny background details to make everything that much more eerie, the kids’ ACTING?!

Like, a lot of the time I find child actors can be really awkward and stilted to watch, but I remember leaving the cinema really impressed by JDG and Sophia Lillis in particular. I liked that they were all allowed to be little shitheads with potty mouths, it felt like a callback to 80s movies like The Lost Boys or Stand By Me. The whole thing worked to make me really care about what happened to the kids (even if I do still have issues with how they handled Mike. I understand even ch1 had limitations with juggling so many characters, but still). I saw it another 2 times in the cinema and have rewatched it at least, I dunno, 7-10 more times since then?

Add to all of that the retroactive CANON R+E baby pining subplot? I just love it, as if that wasn’t obvious by now given my Whole Blog. It’s a really special movie to me!

Anyway!! Ok, the main handful of movies I rewatch all the fucking time are:

Back to the Future, The Lost Boys, Pride and Prejudice (2005), Jaws, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Breakfast Club, Ocean’s 11, POTC 1, The Dark Knight, Inception, Die Hard, LOTR trilogy, Snatch, The Nice Guys, Logan Lucky, Mad Max Fury Road, Clueless, 10 Things I Hate About You, Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Tomb Raider (2018)...

Those are the easily consumable ones that I’ve seen so many times I don’t really have to concentrate or think about them, but I really love them and unfortunately often KEEP rewatching them instead of new stuff. It would take too long to go into why I love all these movies so much because I could write the same amount as I already did for ITCH1, and everyone already knows why those movies are good, so, lol.

I think I’m gonna have to subdivide and categorise this whole post because there are too many separate criteria for... goOD MOVIES, AUUHH 😩

Okay so first off, HORROR MOVIES? I’m especially in love with Re-Animator (1985) and its sequel Bride of Re-Animator, they’re such good examples of camp and batshit 80s practical effects, and also EXTREMELY funny. I’m actually just gonna post my list of my fave horror movies that I do actually keep on my phone at all times lmao. These are in no particular order:

Wholeheartedly recommend every one of these. I’ve never been so scared in my life as I was watching Hereditary in the cinema, hoo boy. Mother! by Aronofsky is one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had (and I actually saw it on the same day I saw IT ch1 for the first time!! That was a fun day)

Psycho (1960) and The Fly from 1986 should also be on there but I couldn’t fit them in the screenshot.

I’m a HUGE fan of a ton of martial arts movies too, like Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer, Ip Man, The Raid movies, John Wick 3 is my fave of the trilogy, Drive from 1997 with Mark Dacascos is incredible, SPL 2, Ong-Bak, Operation Condor, Project A, Iron Monkey, and Zatoichi (2003) are some favourites.

My favourite Tarantino is Reservoir Dogs, fave Coen brothers are Raising Arizona, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and O Brother Where Art Thou. Love some old-timey colour correction and weird offbeat dialogue. I also love Goodfellas!!! And Donnie Brasco! And The Firm, I’m so easy for any good crime/law/gangster/heist procedural like that, especially if they’re from the 80s or 90s in a super dated way.

Fave Disney movie is Tarzan, favourite Ghibli movies are Spirited Away and Lupin III. I remember watching Spirited Away during a thunderstorm one time and it being.... god! Transcendent! Favourite Pixar movie is The Incredibles (the first one. ALSO the documentary “The Pixar Story” is great and well worth a watch, it’s very comforting for some reason) and my favourite Dreamworks movies are HTTYD1 and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron.

I tend to watch more anime movies than tv shows, so stuff like Akira, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Journey to Agartha, and my ultimate fave anime is Sword of the Stranger (2008). The climactic fight in that movie is fucking stunning and should be counted in “bests fights” lists right alongside anything live action

Also if we’re talking animated movies another hearty favourite is Rango, and a Belgian stop-motion (which at one time I considered my favourite movie ever) called Panique Au Village (2009) which is one of the funniest movies ever made imo.

As for TRASHY movies, I’m not sure if that’s the right word for how I feel about these ones but.. dumb/silly/slightly guilty pleasure movies? Ones that I feel need some kind of justification lmfao

Troy - something u must know about me is that I’m a giant slut for the Assassin’s Creed franchise, so if a movie smashes historical and mythological nonsense together with fun costumes and sword fights, I’m gonna enjoy myself. Even if they should have made Achilles and Patroclus gay. Other movies in this vein are King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, and Immortals (2011)

Gods of Egypt - I know all the reasons this movie is whitewashed bullshit. But it was already bullshit with giant Anubis mecha and giant snakes and bad acting and ridiculous CGI and frankly I had a blast at the cinema (my friend who I forced to come with me did not have a blast. Sorry H***)

Avatar - yes, the one with the big blue people. This movie gets a lot of flack nowadays but I really do enjoy it just for the spectacle. The full CGI world technology was so new at the time and I love to wallow in the visuals and daydream about riding a cool dragon around in the jungle

George of the Jungle - I’ll defend this movie to the death ok this movie shaped me as a person, it is fucking hilarious and Brendan Fraser is the himbo to end all himbos. It’s perfect. The song Dela is perfect. I still want to write a reddie AU about it. It’s one of the best movies ever made and I’m not being ironic

Set It Up - I KNOW this is a dumb Netflix original romcom but consider this; it was funny and the leads had great chemistry. I got butterflies. I once watched it and then literally immediately set it back to the start so I could watch it again

The Brady Bunch Movie - when people talk about great satires or parodies you will see them bring up the same movies over and over again, Blazing Saddles, This Is Spinal Tap etc, but they never talk about The Brady Bunch Movie from 1995 for some reason, which they should. It is one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and every time i watch it somehow it gets funnier

Thin Red Line (1998), Badlands (1973) both dir. Terrence Malick

Malick’s brand of dreamy impressionistic filmmaking is something I find really appealing, both of these movies are gorgeous and unusual and poignant and, in the case of Thin Red Line at least, have a lot of things to say about a lot of rough subjects. I don’t totally understand all those things sometimes, but a theme with a lot of my favourite movies is that I’ll be more likely to love something long-term if it raises unanswered questions, or is surreal/esoteric etc. Plus the cinematography is incredible, and I wish there was a way to get Jim Caviezel’s narration from The Thin Red Line as an audiobook because it’s very poetic and soothing.

Let the Bullets Fly (2010) dir. Jiang Wen

This movie is WILD, it’s so much fun. It’s sprawling and intricate and epic and smart and really fucking funny, it! Has! Everything! A gang of very tolerant outlaws!! Jiang Wen’s beautiful broad chest!!! Chow Yun Fat absolutely DECIMATING the scenery, and the two of them outsmarting each other in order to gain control of a small Chinese town!!! Plus it’s long, but it packs so much nonsense and intrigue that it goes by really fast. Wow what a flick

A Field in England (2013) dir. Ben Wheatley

I know I included this in my horror list but aaaaahhh ahhhh Wheatley is one of my favourite directors (he also made Sightseers, and is directing the Tomb Raider sequel which makes me absolutely rabid.) This is a surreal black-and-white psychological horror black comedy set in the English Civil War about some deserters who may or may not meet the Devil in a field. People eat mushrooms. It’s bonkers. I love being blasted in the face with imagery that I don’t understand

Mandy (2018) dir. Panos Cosmatos

Speaking of being blasted in the face!!!!! This movie... I saw it in the cinema and I can’t even begin to explain the experience, but I’ll try. My favourite review site described it like this:

“...somewhere between a prog album cover come to life and a metal album cover come to life, and subscribes to both genre's artistic tendency towards maximalism: what it ends up being is basically naught else but two glorious hours of being pounded by bold colors...”

So, prog and metal are my two favourite genres of music. This movie opens with the quote “When I die, bury me deep, lay two speakers at my feet, put some headphones on my head and rock and roll me when I'm dead.” and then a King Crimson song, it is SURREAL to the nth degree, it’s violent and bizarre and Nic Cage forges a giant silver axe to destroy demonic bikers and there is a CHAINSAW DUEL. A galaxy swirls above a quarry. Multiple animated horror nightmare sequences. At one point a man says “you exude a cosmic darkness” and releases a live tiger. At another point Cage says, in a digitally deepened voice, “The psychotic drowns where the mystic swims. You’re drowning. I’m swimming.” and I haven’t stopped thinking about it for two years

Paper Moon (1973) dir. Peter Bogdanovich

Really fantastic movie set in the Great Depression (and also in black & white) about a conman and a little kid who may or may not be his daughter, running cons across the Midwest. It’s beautifully shot, so sharp and sweet and the progression of their dynamic is really well done because they’re played by an IRL father and daughter. Tatum O’Neal was NINE YEARS OLD and she’s so amazing in this movie she’s actually the youngest person to win a competitive category Oscar. I keep trying to get people to watch this fbdjfjdbf it’s wonderful

Alpha (2018) dir. Albert Hughes

THIS MOVIE IS A VICTIM OF BAD MARKETING ok, the trailers made it look like some twee crappy sentimental Boy And His Dog Adventure, plus it had voiceovers in American-accented english? That’s a total disservice to one of the coolest things about this film; the fact that they got a linguist to construct an entirely original Neolithic language that all the characters speak for the entire runtime. And yes, it is eventually a Boy And His Wolf adventure, but it’s COOL and fairly brutal, and it has some really incredible cinematography. The landscapes are so strange and barren and alien, you really get the sense that this is an ancient world we no longer have any connection to. And it’s also about like, the birth of dog & human companionship sooo it’s perfect.

Free Solo (2018) dir. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin

The Free Climbing Documentary. I loved climbing as a kid, I love outdoor sports, and I love movies that elicit a physical reaction in me, whether that’s horny, scared, real laughter, overwhelming shivers, or in the case of Free Solo - HORRIBLE SWEATING TENSION. Like, I knew about Alex Honnold beforehand because of this adventure film festival I go to every year and I followed him on IG so obviously I knew he lived, but the actual climb itself was torture. My hands sweat every time I see it!! It’s incredible, such a cool look into generally what the human body can do, and more specifically, why Honnold’s psychology and life means he’s so well suited to free soloing. It’s such an exercise in getting to know an individual and get invested in them, before they attempt something very potentially fatal.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) dir. Ang Lee

I can’t even talk about this. When I was around 13 I snuck downstairs to watch this on TV at 11pm in secret, and my life was forever changed. I wouldn’t be who I am if I hadn’t seen Brokeback at the age I did. I seriously can’t talk about this or I’ll write an even longer essay than this already is

God’s Own Country (2017) dir. Francis Lee

The antidote to Brokeback Mountain, I’m so glad I managed to see this one in the cinema too. It makes me cry every time, as someone who’s spent years working on a cold British farm with sheep it was very realistic, which is expected since Lee grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. I love that this movie isn’t really about being closeted, but about being so emotionally repressed and self-loathing that the main character finds it so hard to accept love. Or that he deserves to be loved. The cinnamontographies.... lordt... but also the intimacy and sex scenes are fucking searing wow who hasn’t seen this movie by now. 10 stars. 20 stars!!!

Tomboy (2011) dir. Céline Sciamma

I saw this years ago but I’ve never forgotten it, it cut so deep. It’s from the director of Portrait of a Lady on Fire and it’s about a gnc kid struggling with gender and misogyny and homophobia in a really raw, scrappy way, it reminded me very much of my own... childhood... ahh the central performance is amazing for such a young age. I haven’t seen Portrait yet but I feel like if you went nuts for that, you should definitely check this out, it’s lovely.

Donnie Darko (2001) dir. Richard Kelly

EVERY TIME I WATCH THIS MOVIE I UNDERSTAND LESS AND LESS and that’s what I love so much about it. I love surreal movies, I love time-fuckery and stuff about altered perception etc etc and Donnie Darko scratches all my itches. I wish I could find a way to figure out an IT AU for it, because I know it would work! Somehow! Plus it’s got the subdued 80s nostalgia and I found it at an age when I was really starting to explore movies and music and the soundtrack FUCKS.

Offside (2006) dir. Jafar Panahi

I wish more people knew about this!!! It’s an Iranian film about a disparate group of women and girls who are football fans and want to watch Iran’s qualifying match for the World Cup, but women aren’t allowed into the stadium, so they all get thrown into the Stadium Jail together? They don’t know each other beforehand, but it’s about their changing relationships with each other and the guards and just, their defiance alongside hearing the match from the outside and WOW it’s so lively. Great dialogue and very funny, and such a different kind of story from anything you usually see from Hollywood.

The Fall (2006) dir. Tarsem Singh

This movie... I guess it’s the ideal. This is the platonic ideal of a film for me, it has fantasy, magical realism, glorious visuals, amazing score and costumes and production design and a really interesting, heartbreaking relationship at the core of it. I don’t know why so many of my favourite films feature incredibly raw performances by child actors but this is another one, Catinca Untaru barely knew any English and improvised so much because of that, and it’s fascinating to watch! Also the dynamic with Lee Pace is one of my favourites, where a kid forms a friendship with a guardian figure who isn’t their parent, but the guardian grows to really care for them by the end. It’s like Paper Moon in that sense. What is there to even say about this movie, it’s pure magic joy tempered and countered by genuine gutwrenching emotional conflict in the real world, it’s also ABOUT old moviemaking, in a way, and it’s stunning to look at!

Mad Max Fury Road (2015) dir. George Miller

I know I included this in my “most rewatched” section but it deserves its own thing. We all know why this movie is fucking incredible. I remember clutching my armrests in the cinema and feeling like my skeleton was being blasted back into the seat behind me and tbh that is the high I’m constantly chasing when I go to see any movie. What a fucking gift this film is

Théo et Hugo dans le Même Bateau (2016) dir. Olivier Ducastel, Jacques Martineau

I only found this movie last year and it became an instant favourite. Initially I was just curious because I’d never seen a movie with unsimulated sex before, but it’s so much more than the 18 minute gay sex club orgy it opens with. No, not more than, AS WELL AS. The orgy is important because this movie is so candid and frank about sex and HIV treatment in the modern day, it was eye-opening. Another thing that really got me is that I’d never seen a real-time film before. It’s literally an hour and a half in the lives of these two men, their intense connection and conversation and conflict in the middle of the night in Paris, with some really nice night photography and just!!! Wow!!! AMAZING CHEMISTRY between the actors. This is such a gem if you’re comfortable with explicit sexual content.

Ok. This is already over 3k but film is obviously one of my ridiculous passions and I can and do talk about it for hours. I’ve been reading magazines about it for years, listening to podcasts and reading review blogs and recently, watching video essays on YouTube because the whole process is so interesting to me and I want to learn more!!

Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of valuing form over narrative. The idea that story can often come second to the deeper physical experience and emotional reaction that’s created by using ALL the elements of filmmaking and not just The Story, y’know? Whether that’s editing, shot composition, colour, the sound mix, the actors, how it should all be used to heighten the emotional state the script wants you to feel. And so, I think for a few years now this approach has been influencing the types of films I really, really love.

I think I love surreality and mind-bending magical realism in films specifically because the filmmakers have to use all those different tools to convey things that can be way too metaphysical for just... a script? I’m always chasing that physical response; if a movie can make me stop thinking “I wonder what it was like to set up that shot” and instead overwhelm that suspension of disbelief, if I can be terrified or woozy or crying for whatever reason, that’s what I’m looking for. That’s why I watch so many fuckin movies, and why I’ll always remember nights like seeing IT (2017) for giving me another favourite.

30 Days of Fanfiction Writing (Day 2)

#02 - Name the fandoms you’ve written in, how much you’ve written in them, and if you still write in them

I’ve been around some fandom, but there are only few that I still have fondness with.

The obvious is Cardfight!! Vanguard because that anime will forever have a special place in my heart. While I haven’t been writing much, but there is one fic that I really want to finish but haven’t find the perfect plot.

And I’ve been hanging around Star Wars Rebels, which actually the beginning of my love of Found Family Trope. I’ve written a few back then during 4th of May, Star Wars Day. I haven’t write more because Star Wars World Building is too much for my brain XD

And Rise of the Brave Tangled Dragon, which is a mega crossover between Disney Tangled, Pixar Brave, and DreamWorks How To Train Your Dragon and Rise of the Guardian. I was there when it was on the rise and the massive turn when Frozen was added into the mix. I sort of ghosted out at that because Jelsa is everywhere. But it’s nice to go back to the OG4. I have one fic that I need to rewrite, which is a massive crossover that I have no idea how to do XD

Kingdom Hearts. I think I wrote a few. But this is the first time I actually join a Discord Server and my first experience in RP. It was so fun during the KH3 and Re:Mind hype, but the server kinda dead. I wish one day I can write at least one with all the OC from the server, maybe making something similar to KH without the Disney thing because KH Lore is hard XD.

And of course, the current fandom, Twisted Wonderland. And for those who knows me, know that I write TW:OPT. Maybe in the future I can write that Mafia OC AU, but I’m scared because my mafia knowledge is from KHR which had babies with guns XD
