LOS ANGELES — The day she was set to receive an award recognizing her work promoting inclusivity and social justice, Lizzo was again sued by a former employee who said that behind the scenes, the entertainer allows bullying, harassment and racial discrimination.
“I felt like I was living in a madhouse,” fashion designer Asha Daniels, 35, told NBC News the day before she filed her lawsuit against Lizzo and other members of the singer’s team. “It was totally shocking.”
“I was listening to this Black woman on this huge stage have this message of self-love and caring for others and being empathetic and being strong and standing up for others,” she said. “And I was witnessing myself, the dancers and the background vocalists and my local team in every city be harassed and bullied regularly.”
The suit, filed Thursday by lawyers for Daniels in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accused wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura of doing stereotypical impressions of Black women, referring to the performers as “fat,” “useless” and “dumb,” and forcing them to change in front of a mostly white, male stage crew who would “lewdly gawk” at them, the suit says.
Daniels was fired after she complained about Nomura, according to the suit.
“Lizzo is the boss, so the buck stops with her,” Daniels’ lawyer, Ron Zambrano, said in a statement Thursday.
Zambrano, the lawyer for three former dancers who accused Lizzo of sexual harassment and a hostile work environment in a lawsuit last month, echoed allegations made in Daniels’ suit, saying Lizzo “has created a sexualized and racially charged environment on her tours that her management staff sees as condoning such behavior, and so it continues unchecked.”
Lizzo has previously said that although she has to make difficult decisions, “it’s never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or like they aren’t valued as an important part of the team.”
Thursday’s suit alleged sexual harassment, racial discrimination, failure to prevent a hostile work environment and other accusations. Nomura was named as a defendant, as was Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, her production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., and her tour manager, Carlina Gugliotta.
Representatives for Lizzo did not immediately reply to a request for comment. Gugliotta did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Attempts to reach Nomura were unsuccessful.
Lizzo has denied the previous allegations, calling the dancers’ accounts “sensationalized stories” that were false and “outrageous.”
Lizzo is set to be honored Thursday with the Black Music Action Coalition’s Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic work and commitment to social justice, the group said in a news release.
“She has been a longtime advocate for inclusivity and uses her music to empower marginalized groups to promote diversity,” the release said.
Valuing female empowerment
Daniels first worked for Lizzo in September 2022, designing custom clothing for her dancers, and was hired early this year to tour with the performer, the lawsuit said.
Daniels said that she had been friendly with Nomura, and that she was thrilled to work for someone whose values of female empowerment she shared.
“As a Black woman myself, I love when I see Black women that have a big stage that use that stage to uplift us,” she said.
According to the suit, Daniels’ worked seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. and was told to work even after she injured her ankle.
Nomura told Daniels never to interact with Lizzo or to dress attractively in front of her because it may make Lizzo jealous, the suit said. Even though she was taken aback by the comment — “Lizzo is beautiful, she’s talented, she’s got an amazing career, she has no reason to be jealous of anyone,” Daniels told NBC News — she said she followed the rule and never spoke to Lizzo.
Privacy concerns
The dancers were forced to change in front of Lizzo’s stage crew, most of whom were white men who would “lewdly gawk, sneer, and giggle while watching the dancers rush through their outfit changes,” the suit alleged.
When Daniels complained to Nomura that the dancers had no privacy, Nomura allegedly told her not to alert anyone else to the matter, according to the suit.
Daniels was scolded for providing new stockings to dancers after they damaged their clothing while performing and was “specifically instructed to not give certain dancers panties, mirrors, or items they would need and ask for, despite those items being stocked,” the suit said. The suit did not indicate why.
Alleged slurs, threats and offensive impressions
Nomura allegedly mocked Lizzo and her dancers with what the lawsuit described as a “stereotypical sassy Black woman imitation.” Daniels told her the imitations were offensive, the suit said, and Nomura ignored her.
Nomura also appeared to threaten employees, according to the suit. On one occasion, she used a slur and said she would “kill” anyone who put her job in jeopardy, the suit said.
After Daniels complained to Gugliotta, Lizzo’s tour manager, she allegedly asked Daniels to surreptitiously record Nomura, according to the suit.
Daniels declined, believing it would be unethical and possibly illegal, and continued to work for Lizzo, according to the suit.
Sexually charged complaints
When they traveled to Amsterdam, she heard managers discussing hiring sex workers for lewd sex acts, attending sex shows and buying hard drugs, according to the suit.
Daniels said she did not attend the events. The lawsuit filed last month on behalf of three former dancers describes one of those dancers going to an Amsterdam strip club, Bananaenbar, and accuses Lizzo of encouraging cast members to engage with performers and pressuring the dancer to touch one of them.
The dancer repeatedly declined, according to the suit, but relented after Lizzo allegedly led a chant goading her to do so.
Daniels’ suit also alleged that a manager texted a sexually graphic image to more than two dozen people.
“No one from LIZZO’s management team addressed this graphic sexual imagery in the workplace appropriately,” the suit said.
In February, Daniels told the tour manager, Gugliotta, about what the suit called “widespread racial and sexual harassment” taking place on tour. She was fired weeks later, on March 6, the same day she said Nomura scolded her for taking a break after an allergic reaction, the suit said.
Daniels told NBC News she learned of her termination via a plane ticket in her email.
The tour manager later told Daniels that “everyone” was aware Nomura was “crazy” and apologized several times but said it would be too difficult to replace Nomura, the suit said. The manager told Daniels that Nomura wanted her “gone” for speaking up, according to the suit.
Although Daniels had come to view her working conditions as increasingly hopeless, she said, she was stunned about her removal. She had been committed to staying for her relationships with the dancers and others who she said weren’t getting the support they deserved.
The firing was especially stunning, Daniels added, because she said Gugliotta had nothing but praise for her designs.
Afterward, Daniels said, the manager asked if she would continue doing design work for the dancers — an offer Daniels said she accepted because of her relationships with the performers and because she didn’t want them wearing mass-produced leotards purchased online, a “highly disrespectful” option Daniels said they’d previously been given.
While working for Lizzo and in the months that followed, Daniels suffered lingering physical and psychological problems, including anxiety and impaired vision, according to the suit. She said she previously considered suing Lizzo over what she described as the most toxic work environment she’d ever experienced, but she came forward only after learning of last month’s lawsuit.
“Not only do they deserve for me to stand up for them, but I also deserve to stand up for myself,” she said. “Twenty-five-year-old Asha deserves someone to stand up for her.”
Daniels’ plea to Lizzo and her managers now, she said, is to take the performer’s values of love and support seriously.
“Black women deserve to work in spaces where we feel safe, where we aren’t being harassed, where we aren’t being sexualized," she said. “We’re allowed to just be great and work hard, and be treated the way that everyone else is allowed to be treated."

Over 100 artists including Rage Against the Machine co-founders Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha, along with Boots Riley and Speedy Ortiz, have announced that they are boycotting any concert venue that uses facial recognition technology, citing concerns that the tech infringes on privacy and increases discrimination.
The boycott, organized by the digital rights advocacy group Fight for the Future, calls for the ban of face-scanning technology at all live events. Several smaller independent concert venues across the country, including the House of Yes in Brooklyn, the Lyric Hyperion in Los Angeles, and Black Cat in D.C., also pledged to not use facial recognition tech for their shows. Other artists who said they would boycott include Anti-Flag, Wheatus, Downtown Boys, and over 80 additional artists. The full list of signatories is available here.
“Surveillance tech companies are pitching biometric data tools as ‘innovative’ and helpful for increasing efficiency and security. Not only is this false, it’s morally corrupt,” Leila Nashashibi, campaigner at Fight for the Future, said in a statement. “For starters, this technology is so inaccurate that it actually creates more harm and problems than it solves, through misidentification and other technical faultiness. Even scarier, though, is a world in which all facial recognition technology works 100% perfectly – in other words, a world in which privacy is nonexistent, where we’re identified, watched, and surveilled everywhere we go.”
Facial recognition technology at venues has grown increasingly controversial over the past several months, particularly as Madison Square Garden Entertainment and James Dolan have garnered scrutiny for using the tech to kick out lawyers affiliated with ongoing lawsuits against the company. Several attorneys had been removed last year from events at MSG’s venues including its eponymous arena and Radio City Music Hall. Last October, attorney Barbara Hart was removed from Brandi Carlile’s Madison Square Garden Concert because her law firm was litigating against MSG in a class action lawsuit. (Hart herself wasn’t involved with that suit.)

The ‘iDIVERSE’ program bars white and Asian researchers from applying.
The University of California, Los Angeles, medical school was hit last week with whistleblower allegations that its admissions office has for years discriminated on the basis of race, in violation of California law, by holding black and Latino applicants to lower standards than their white and Asian counterparts.
The allegations triggered an email message from the dean of the medical school, Steven Dubinett, who denied the claims and said that students and faculty "are held to the highest standards of academic excellence." He subsequently told an obscure Los Angeles Times opinion columnist that the allegations, published in the Washington Free Beacon, are "fact-free."
Hiring and admissions decisions, he wrote in his message last week, are "based on merit," not race, "in a process consistent with state and federal law."
But Dubinett himself directs a center within the medical school, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, that houses a race-based fellowship experts say is illegal.
Participants in the "iDIVERSE" program "must be" black, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander, LGBT, or a woman, according to screenshots of a now-deleted webpage obtained by the Free Beacon. Fellows research ways to increase diversity in clinical trials as part of a study funded by Pfizer, the American Heart Association, and Gates Ventures, the personal LLC of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
The website indicates that the deadline to apply to the program, which has existed for two years, was March 1.
Tumblr media
"This is obviously illegal," said Adam Mortara, the lead trial lawyer for Students for Fair Admissions in its lawsuit against Harvard, which led to the Supreme Court decision last year that outlawed affirmative action. "Every time we sue a company or institution for doing this, they settle by ending the program."
Dubinett and UCLA medical school did not respond to requests for comment.
The program is an awkward albatross for a school that spent Memorial Day weekend doing damage control after a Free Beacon report showed that record numbers of UCLA medical students are failing basic tests of clinical knowledge—in part, admissions officers said, because standards have been lowered by affirmative action.
On Saturday, a fourth-year student posted data on X, formerly Twitter, that he claimed had been released internally to refute that report. Though the new data showed that students did better on a recent round of tests, known as shelf exams, than some other cohorts, UCLA has not addressed the rise in failure rates over time or the fact that nearly a quarter of students in the class of 2025 failed three or more shelf exams.
Nor has it explained how the percentage of Asian matriculants shrunk by almost 50 percent since 2018, with most of the drop occurring after a new dean of admissions, Jennifer Lucero was hired in 2020. That decline coincided with a sharp increase in the number of students who come from "medically under-served" areas or identify as "disadvantaged"—indicators that admissions officials say are being used as proxies for race.
Matriculants from under-served areas nearly doubled as a percentage of the incoming class after Lucero took the helm in 2020, rising steadily from 34 to 56 percent of first-year students over four years, per data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
Tumblr media
The number of first-year students indicating disadvantage likewise rose by nearly 60 percent, from 42 percent in 2020 to 67 percent in 2023. No other elite medical school has come close to these numbers, according to a review of AAMC data for the top 20 schools on U.S News & World Report’s rankings for medical research.
Tumblr media
While the trends don’t provide proof of discrimination, they are consistent with the accounts of racial gerrymandering from UCLA admissions officers. Lucero has allegedly told officials that the class should reflect the "diversity" of California, where racial preferences have been illegal since 1996, and has attacked those who raise concerns about minority candidates with low test scores. She even made the entire admissions committee sit through a two-hour presentation on Native American history after a Native American applicant was rejected, three sources said.
Together with the iDIVERSE fellowship, which launched in 2022 and involves partnerships with other institutions, the accounts paint a picture of a medical school suffused with racial preferences and determined to skirt civil rights law by any means necessary. They come as the medical school is reviewing its entire first-year curriculum in the wake of a separate Free Beacon report on a required course, "Structural Racism and Health Equity," in which students learn that weight loss is a "hopeless endeavor."
That course also hosted a guest speaker, Lisa Gray-Garcia, who has referred to the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks as "justice" and led students in chants of "free, free Palestine." Days later, two residents in the medical school’s psychiatry program delivered a talk that glorified self-immolation as a form of "resistance" in the context of the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
Both incidents were cited in a congressional probe of UCLA’s response to anti-Semitism—another ongoing controversy. At a hearing on Capitol Hill this month, UCLA chancellor Gene Block said the medical school was investigating Gray-Garcia’s talk but offered no further details on the review.
The whistleblower allegations are not the first admissions scandal to hit UCLA. In 2021, a former soccer coach was sentenced to eight months in prison after he helped two applicants pose as athletic recruits so they would be accepted to the university.

A little bit of personal history
Kimberlé Crenshaw is a prominent legal scholar, professor, and founder of the African American Policy Forum. She was born in Canton, Ohio, on May 5 1959 to Marian and Walter Clarence Crenshaw. Her parents encouraged her from a young age to discuss "interesting things" that she "observed in the world that day" which later became the foundation of her career.
Crenshaw attended Canton McKinley High School before pursuing higher education at Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in Government and Africana studies in 1981. She then earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1984, where she was a member of the Harvard Law Review. In 1985 she completed an LL.M. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she also served as a law clerk to Wisconsin Supreme Court Judge Shirley Abrahamson.
Following the completion of her L.L.M., Crenshaw joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1986, where she has been teaching ever since. She is widely recognized as a founder of the field of critical race theory, and her academic work focuses on civil rights, critical race studies and constitutional law. At UCLA she teaches several courses, including Advanced Critical Race Theory, Civil Rights, Intersectional Perspectives on Race, Gender and the Criminalization of Women & Girls and Race, Law and Representation. She has been recognized by her students for her exceptional teaching abilities, having been elected professor of the year by matriculating students in both 1991 and 1994.
In 1995, Crenshaw was appointed a full professor at Columbia Law School, where she also founded and directs the Centre for Intersectionality & Social Policy Studies, established in 2011. Her courses at Columbia include a Intersectionalities Workshop centred around Civil Rights.

Throughout her career, Crenshaw has been actively involved in promoting equality and justice. In 1991, she assisted the legal team representing Anita Hill at the U.S. Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. In 1996, she co-founded the African American Policy Forum (AAPF), a think tank focused on "dismantling structural inequality" and "advancing and expanding racial justice, gender equality, and the indivisibility of all human rights, both in the U.S. and internationally." The organization's mission is to bridge the gap between academic research and public discourse in addressing inequality and discrimination.
Crenshaw has received numerous awards and honours for her work, including the Fulbright Chair for Latin America in Brazil, and in 2008, she was awarded an in-residence fellowship at the Centre of Advanced Behavioural Studies at Stanford. She has also written several books and articles, including "Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Colour," which has become a widely-cited and influential piece in the field of critical race theory. Her next book, "The Race Track: How the Myth of Equal Opportunity Defeats Racial Justice," co-authored with Luke Charles Harris and George Lipsitz, will be published in December 2025.
In addition to her academic work, Crenshaw has also been involved in various public service roles. She wrote the background paper on Race and Gender Discrimination for the United Nations World Conference on Racism in 2001, helped to facilitate the addition of gender in the WCAR Conference Declaration and served as a member of the National Research Council panel on Research on Violence Against Women.

Employment Lawyer in Los Angeles: Protecting Your Rights in the Workplace
Tumblr media
Navigating the complexities of employment law can be challenging, especially in a bustling and diverse city like Los Angeles. Whether you’re facing issues related to discrimination, wrongful termination, wage disputes, or harassment, having a knowledgeable employment lawyer on your side can make a significant difference. Here’s an overview of how an employment lawyer in Los Angeles can help protect your rights in the workplace.
Understanding Employment Law
Employment law encompasses a wide range of regulations and statutes that govern the relationship between employers and employees. In California, state laws often provide greater protections than federal laws, making it crucial to be aware of your rights. Key areas of employment law include:
Discrimination: Laws prohibit workplace discrimination based on race, gender, age, disability, and other protected characteristics.
Harassment: Employees have the right to work in an environment free from harassment, whether it’s sexual harassment or bullying.
Wage and Hour Laws: California has strict regulations regarding minimum wage, overtime pay, and meal breaks.
Wrongful Termination: Employees cannot be terminated for illegal reasons, such as retaliation for reporting discrimination or for taking medical leave.
Why You Need an Employment Lawyer
Expert Legal Advice
Employment lawyers specialize in labor laws and can provide you with expert advice tailored to your specific situation. They can help you understand your rights and options, ensuring that you make informed decisions.
Navigating Complex Regulations

Negotiating Settlements
Many employment disputes can be resolved through negotiation rather than litigation. An experienced attorney can negotiate with your employer or their insurance company to secure a fair settlement that compensates you for your damages.
Litigation Support
If your case cannot be resolved through negotiation, your employment lawyer can represent you in court. They will prepare all necessary legal documents, advocate for your rights, and present your case to a judge or jury.
Protecting Against Retaliation
Employees who report workplace violations or participate in investigations may face retaliation. An employment lawyer can help protect you from retaliatory actions and ensure that your rights are upheld.
Understanding Severance Agreements
If you’re facing a layoff or termination, you may be presented with a severance agreement. An attorney can review this document to ensure it’s fair and in your best interest, helping you understand any potential consequences.
Class Action and Collective Actions
If your situation is part of a broader issue affecting multiple employees, an employment lawyer can assist in filing class action lawsuits or collective actions. This can be particularly effective in wage and hour disputes.
Common Employment Issues in Los Angeles
Workplace Discrimination: Employees may face discrimination based on various factors, including race, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability. If you believe you’ve been discriminated against, it’s essential to consult with an attorney who can help you pursue your claim.
Harassment: Harassment in the workplace can take many forms, from inappropriate comments to hostile work environments. An employment lawyer can help you navigate the process of reporting harassment and seeking justice.
Wage and Hour Disputes: Many employees in Los Angeles encounter issues related to unpaid wages, overtime pay, or misclassification as independent contractors. An attorney can help you recover lost wages and ensure compliance with wage laws.
Wrongful Termination: If you believe you’ve been fired for illegal reasons, such as retaliation or discrimination, an employment lawyer can assist in filing a wrongful termination claim.
Conclusion
Protecting your rights in the workplace is vital for your professional and personal well-being. An employment lawyer in Los Angeles can provide invaluable support and expertise when navigating complex employment issues. From understanding your rights to representing you in court, having a knowledgeable attorney by your side can make all the difference. Lizzo has lodged her first legal response to the lawsuit brought by three of her former dancers.
In August they claimed they had been subjected to sexual harassment and a hostile work environment while on tour with the US singer, which she denies.
The star and her Big Grrrl Big Touring company are requesting that the court dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning that it cannot be refiled.
If they do not, the dancers are requesting a jury trial.
What are the claims?
Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams and Noelle Rodriguez accused Lizzo - real name Melissa Jefferson - and her touring company of several allegations in the original complaint filed in a Los Angeles court.
These include claims that Lizzo pressured them to attend a sex show in Amsterdam and interact with the nude performers, and that dance team captain Shirlene Quigley repeatedly engaged in behaviour that made them feel uncomfortable.
They also accuse Lizzo of fat shaming, saying the Brit Award and Grammy-winner "called attention" to a dancer's weight gain following a performance; and that employees of the touring company singled out black dancers by accusing them of "being lazy, unprofessional and having bad attitudes".
It is also claimed that Lizzo denied dancers bathroom breaks during an "excruciating re-audition".
In the immediate aftermath of the claims, Lizzo took to social media allegations to say they were as "unbelievable as they sound and too outrageous to not be addressed."
She added that "sensationalised stories" were "coming from former employees who have already publicly admitted they were told their behaviour on tour was inappropriate and unprofessional", something the dancers deny.
Lizzo's dance team Big Grrrls later released a statement in support of the singer, saying they "had the time of our lives" on tour.
What are Lizzo's lawyers now saying?
Now, in a 31-point rebuttal, lodged on Wednesday, Lizzo's legal team said:
The dancers who filed the complaint "ratified, acquiesced, condoned, and/or approved of the acts" they were now complaining about.
Lizzo's alleged conduct "was undertaken in good faith and with good cause" and "undertaken for legitimate reasons reasonably related to one or more lawful business purposes".
If the dancers were harmed as alleged, they "contributed, in whole or in part," to that harm.
The dancers' claims relate to Lizzo's rights of free speech and/or religion and are therefore barred.
The dancers claims of discrimination or retaliation should be barred because any employment decisions were made "for legitimate, non-discriminatory, non-pretextual reasons", and that Lizzo and the other defendants "acted out of business necessity".
The dancers "have failed to plead and cannot establish facts sufficient to support allegations of malice, oppression or fraud".
Lizzo's spokesperson, Stefan Friedman, said in a statement that this was "the first step" of a legal process in which the star and her team "will demonstrate that they have always practised what they've preached - whether it comes to promoting body positivity, leading a safe and supportive workplace or protecting individuals from any kind of harassment."
He continued: "Any and all claims to the contrary are ridiculous, and we look forward to proving so in a court of law."
In response, the dancers' lawyer, Neama Rahmani said Lizzo's team's answer "merely consists of boilerplate objections that have nothing to do with the case".
"That said, the key takeaway is that Lizzo is agreeing to our clients' demand for a jury trial," he added.
"We look forward to presenting our case in court and letting a panel of her peers decide who is telling the truth, Lizzo and her team, who continue to shame the victims or the plaintiffs and so many others who have come forward sharing similar stories of abuse and harassment."

Earlier this month, Lizzo was sued for the second time this year by a former employee who claimed she oversaw an "unsafe, sexually charged workplace culture".
Fashion designer Asha Daniels accused the star's wardrobe manager of making "racist and fatphobic" comments and mocking black women in the entourage.
Lizzo was named as a defendant in the lawsuit, but was not directly accused of harassment.
A spokesperson for the star called the case an "absurd publicity stunt".

Los Angeles Sparks star Dearica Hamby is taking legal action against the WNBA and the franchise she spent the majority of her professional basketball career with.Hamby, who was drafted in the first round by the then-San Antonio Stars, submitted documentation to the U.S. District Court of Nevada on Monday. The Stars relocated to Las Vegas for the 2018 season and were rebranded to the Aces. The complaint alleges the three-time WNBA All-Star faced “repeated acts of intimidation, discrimination and retaliation” leading up to and after she was traded to the Sparks in 2023. Hamby was pregnant at the time.CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COMThe WNBA launched an investigation into Hamby’s discrimination claims in 2023.ANGEL REESE JOINS 3X3 BASKETBALL LEAGUE SET TO PAY OUT HIGHEST AVERAGE SALARIES IN WOMEN’S SPORTSAces coach Becky Hammon received a two-game suspension as a result of the probe. The franchise also forfeited a first round draft selection. But, Hamby’s attorneys argued the league’s response to the situation was inadequate.”The WNBA is, at its core, a workplace, and federal laws have long shielded pregnant women from discrimination on the job. The world champion Aces exiled Dearica Hamby for becoming pregnant and the WNBA responded with a light tap on the wrist,” Dana Sniegocki, Erin Norgaard, and Artur Davis of HKM Employment Attorneys said in a statement. The lawyers added that Hamby’s ordeal should put other potential mothers who are in the WNBA “on notice.””Every potential mother in the league is now on notice that childbirth could change their career prospects overnight. That can’t be right in one of the most prosperous and dynamic women’s professional sports leagues in America.”Hamby is a two-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year and was a member of the Aces 2022 WNBA championship team.Fox News Digital contacted the WNBA and the Aces, but did not immediately receive a response to a request for comment.Follow Fox News Digital’s sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
