The fact that sign language was BANNED world-wide for almost a century and nobody knows about it is scary.

Hi, I’m trying to put together a compendium of information and tips from disabled people on how the world can be made more accessible to you. This includes any and all disabilities, whether they be physical or mental. If you consider yourself to be disabled, your input is appreciated.
If you’re not disabled, but would like to help get more information, it would be highly appreciated if you could re-blog, and if you wanted to tag some disabled friends that would be great, too. Even better actually!
(under the cut: further elaboration on what this would include, some sample questions, and the questionnaire and info sheet)
I’ve seen lots of posts from disabled people on small things that would be helpful for them (for example: not putting lots of emojis for people who use screen readers) and would just like to compile all of it in one easy to share document.
I would also love for it to include a resources section for learning more about different disabilities. Things like books, movies, videos, and other posts that do a good job of explaining things to people.
some questions that would really help if they were answered are:
What are some ways that general people on the internet could make your life easier?
What are some ways that the general population could make your in person life easier?
What are some ways people you know personally could make your life easier?
What are some things you really dislike people doing regarding your disability?
What media do you think does a good job representing your disability?
Do you have a social media account concerning your disability that you’d like for me to include in my section of further resources?
Do you have any positivity you would like to share about your disability?
answer as many or as few of these as you’d like, and this is of course non-comprehensive, so feel free to include any other information that you’d like to.
If you think you’ll answer all or most of these, I’d appreciate you filling out the survey linked at the bottom. It will have two sections. The first asks for information on your disability (for organization purposes in the accommodation sheet), and the second asks for actual accommodations.
If you only wish to answer one or two (or have questions/comments/concerns), you can answer in the comments, reblogs, or my dms.
Within he information spreadsheet itself, some disabilities will have entire sections, others will be categorized into sections depending on what makes the most sense. This has nothing to do with perceived importance/severity of the disability, merely with whether the information is generalizable to other disabilities in a category :)
It is also currently in the workshop stage, so if you have any tips on ways to make using the spreadsheet a more enjoyable experience, I'd love that too!
Accommodation Anthology
(sorry if this reads like a corporate survey btw. I really just wanted to include as much info as I could)

Okay but why is no one talking about the disability/accessibility scene in Sex Education 4x7? This is just a snippet of what myself and so many of us face on a daily basis.
We get left behind and discouraged both by our friends and the system DAILY. Yeah, we get a bit of support, sometimes the system will give us a little pat on the back and our friends will stand by us - but do you all see how hard daily life actually is?
When you see us as normal and coping, ask yourself - what do we have to do to support ourselves to make you feel like we fit in with your version of “normal”?
#sex education#sorry if I can’t quite get my point across#I’m very angry but so glad they’ve touched on this in even just th smallest way in the series#Issac made an amazing point about how we need accessibility and how people take it for granted#and my god when thy left aisha when the fire alarm went off I was reminded of my daily struggles#and when her friends were like “oh yeah well tell you later#ouch#that is such a real thing that so many hearing people do#sorry I’m just angry#disability#disabilties#disabled#deaf

I hate that every video of Deaf people just goofing around somehow gets twisted into an educational video by hearing people for hearing people. can you guys go 5 seconds without treating us like bugs under a microscope?
#'that's so cool I learned something new about Deaf people from this!'#and then it's just a Deaf person having fun not doing anything educational#actually deaf#actuallydeaf

Steve always gets his devil horns wrong.
He keeps his thumb out and does the ‘I love you” sign on accident and Eddie never calls him out on it. He even threatens the others under pain of death (their dnd character’s death) to never correct him.
It’s so fucking adorable to see Steve at the edge of the stage, right up front, throwing up an ‘I love you’ at a Corroded Coffin show. Eddie sometimes can’t stand how wrapped around this man’s finger he is.
#I grew up signing in a church that was also an education center for the deaf and hoh so this is me#I ALWAYS have to correct myself when doing rock hands#it's okay steve you got the spirit#steddie#my brain vomit

We all appreciate how much Moonlight Chicken is grounded in reality, so I wanted to add another bit that I haven’t seen yet: the school Heart wants to go to is very real, and it makes perfect sense for him to go there. In fact, it’s probably the best option in the world.
He’s looking at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) in Rochester, New York (this is nowhere near NYC, for anyone unfamiliar with New York geography--it’s right on Lake Ontario and not too far from Niagara Falls). NTID is one of only two four-year college programs specifically for Deaf students in the US, the other being Gallaudet University, which is a liberal arts school and doesn’t offer an Engineering major. I am by no means an expert, but a fair bit of googling says that internationally there aren’t many options for Deaf students wanting to pursue higher education at an institution that specifically welcomes and is prepared to support them. At a lot of universities, they would be piecing together accommodations that many professors might be unfamiliar with, and that they might have to fight to get the school to provide. NTID is fully integrated and makes up a not insignificant portion of RIT’s student body: about 1 in 20 students are deaf or hard of hearing. There is history there, resources, experience, and a built-in community of support.
Anyway, not only is NTID unique in that regard, RIT also has a well-respected Engineering program. For a Deaf kid who wants to study engineering, it’s a fantastic choice.
We don’t know how good Heart’s English skills are, but he seems to have been a good student. And lucky for him, Thai Sign Language and American Sign Language are closely related, so that linguistic transition might even be easier than the written one.
I’m willing to bet Heart has known all about NTID for a while, but couldn’t bring it up with his parents. Him wanting to study in the US has nothing to do with Li Ming, that’s just a happy coincidence. That and the fact that Li Ming is forcing his parents to finally listen to him.
So as adorable as it is that these two lovebirds are going off on a grand international adventure together, I’m really glad that it’s grounded in reality, and that they both separately want to be there, for their own reasons. This story is not a fantasy, but reality can be even more beautiful.

Press Release - Remarks of the President at the Gallaudet Centennial Banquet
Collection LBJ-STMNT: Statements FilesSeries: Statements Files
[[red imprint reading: RECORD COPY]]
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OFFICE OF THE WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE WHITE HOUSE
REMARKS OF THE PRESIDENT
AT THE GALLAUDET CENTENNIAL BANQUET
GALLAUDET COLLEGE, WASHINGTON, D.C.
(AS ACTUALLY DELIVERED)
Mr. Chairman, Mr. President, Senator Hill, Members
of the Board of the Trustees of Gallaudet College, Ladies and
Gentlemen: I am pleased to be able to join personally tonight
in honoring Gallaudet College.
Twenty years ago tonight, on distant shores
America's sons were engaged in a great battle in mankind's
greatest war. One hundred years ago tonight on these
shores America's sons were engaged in a great battle in mankind's
greatest war. One hundred years ago tonight on these
shores America's sons were engaged in bitter battles of
our own cruel civil war.
How we are observing this historic day says
much about America.
In Europe, America's sons meet tonight in peace
with yesterday's allies--and adversaries alike--to plan
the works of future unity instead of worrying about the
wounds of past conflict.
Here in Washington tonight we gather to honor
an institution of higher learning which was established
as an act of compassion in those times of callous strife 100
years ago.
The character of our Nation is comprised of
many traits.
We honor courage.
We value commonsense.
But, across our 188 years, the great cementing
influence has always been compassion.
In our purpose abroad and at home, we have always
heeded the injunction of the Apostle, who told us long ago,
"Be ye of one mind, showing compassion one of another.
Yet, our wealthy society is tolerating a worrisome
burden of wasted human lives. Tonight, too many of our
people are unschooled, untrained, and underemployed. Too many
are physically handicapped. Too many are mentally
handicapped; too many more are handicapped for life by the environments
and the experiences of their childhoods. America needs these talents. We must not and we
cannot let them go to waste.
An ancient Hebrew proverb teaches that there are
three pillars of society: education, charity, and piety. [full transcription at link]

I have so many problems with karamo but the s8 finale… he sees an asian woman who has severe trauma surrounding her father due to (some) asian culture(s) not allowing people to properly talk to their parents about their emotions or issues with them because that could be seen as disrespectful, oui? so she hasn’t spoken to him after her mother died and that is hard, yes?
and this man chooses to surprise her in the car (after making her cry) with an unannounced FaceTime call with said father, which forces her to immediately talk about why she’s upset with him after three years of not speaking??????? without being prepared, without knowing what to say to a stubborn elderly asian man who never learned to deal with his emotions and fucked up because of it? REALLY?
the LEAST he could have done was tell her in advance so she could write it down for herself and so she could be prepared
sure they talked. sure they made a start. but at what cost. what violence did this wreak on her for no reason. jesus CHRIST THIS MAN ANGERS ME SO MUCH
#queer eye#spoilers#I guess#there’s maybe (1) season in all 8 where I wasn’t pissed at Karamo’s ‘therapy’#this man is the LAST on this entire list I would want to talk to I would just throw everything on Tan while we shop ngl#I love this show DONT get me wrong but SOOOOOOO many times karamo has the right idea but the complete wrong execution#also what the FUCK was that whole thing in dentons episode?#he tells you the school for the deaf is at risk of closing down due to funding#aka big societal capitalistic issue that speaks volumes about what’s wrong with our society#and karamo decides to hit him with ? you’re scared to fail? You’re too hard on yourself#NO SHIT HES SCARES TO FAIL THERES CLOSE TO NONE SPORT EDUCATION SCHOOLS FOR THE HARD OF HEARING#AND HES TRYING TO SAVE THE ONLY ONE STANDING IN THE AREA NO SHIT HES SCARED#HELLO?????????#Don’t even get me started on that episode where he suddenly pulled in the guy who put the hero in a wheel chair by shooting him#without announcement#(I forgot their names it’s been a while apologies)#like sorry#my dude you can’t do this that’s insanely#triggering#??!?!??????!??!?#anyways. whew.#I bawled my eyes out at the season finale like it ticked all the boxes just now but fucking karamo#I swear to god.#be better try harder maybe ask an actual therapist#fuck me dude#it’s for the best I was never selected for this show because oh my god he triggers my fight instinct#would make for good tv though I guess

Just FYI:
Parents need to be aware that no matter how safe you think your children’s environment might be, it’s better to be safe than sorry. They don’t need their names emblazoned on everything, especially when they’re already from a high-profile family, and their mother plasters their images on Instagram as often as possible despite their father choosing not to, in order to keep them safe.
I won’t post the photo in Liz’s Instagram story in order to mitigate the potential for harm that she’s already done to them, but this isn’t the first time she’s willingly jeopardized their safety for likes on social media, so I suppose it’s a moot point.
She told us herself:
“I am an eXtrAoRdiNAry mOthEr!”
#extraordinary#sure jan#lizards just want to lizard#tone deaf and clueless#personal safety#department of education#safety guidelines#they know who they are#they don’t need to advertise it to the whole wide world#that’s all for her and her ego

To d/Deaf, Hoh/hh, and ASL-fluent people only,
*some things to keep in mind are that we are not currently fluent, so this is hypothetical, and to begin with we'd likely be signing pretty poorly because we're learning.

I will never forget that in middle school because I have no musical talent I didn't join band or choir and I also had no athletic ability so I wasn't on a sports team so during the period everyone was else was doing one of those things the rest of us no talent kids had to take "Reading class" where we just read books
And that sounds nice except I was a fast reader and I was only allowed to read 2 pages of the book in question a day. I was not allowed to read ahead of the class and I was not allowed to read my book from home or even work on my homework.
But if I looked too bored the teacher would get mad at me for that and for not reading and "I read it already" was met with a look of disgust and being told to read it again.
So for like an hour I would either stare into space or read the same 2 pages over and over and over again
And I couldn't even hide my book from home behind my textbook because she watched me like a hawk
Why?
Because the teacher of that class fucking hated me for god knows what reason
Anyway I hated the Odyssey for years because I was forced to read it at an absolute snails pace in middle school and it took me a long time to separate out the story from that experience
#american public school#education#american education#the 90s#i still dont know what her problem with me was#i was an obnoxiously well behaved kid#all i wanted to do was read my book from home quietly after doing rge required reading she found that offensive#despite the fact i had go keep a daily log of how many minutes I read a day#look its not my fault im tone deaf and clumsy as shit#why are you punishing me for that!

If you are a public, notable organization with the resources to do so, there is no excuse not to have properly written subtitles on your videos rather than relying on auto-generated captions
#ableism#i’m looking for materials for my students#and american battlefield trust has a lot of good resources#but i can’t use these videos because they don’t have proper subtitles to help my ESL kids#on top of that it of course limits people who are deaf/hard of hearing to an insane degree#like you are a notable charity organization dedicated to creating educational programs#do better!!

At some point I am going to actually have to watch Idiocracy. I mean, I know I don't HAVE to, but I enjoy subjecting myself to such film experiences for the sake of having a better reason to analytically criticize something.
#also I am on this mike judge kick rn so why not#I can say this with the little bit I do know about that film and what it is...attempting to say#I think the aspects of how it falls flat will be the most interesting to see#it is one of those favorite movies for misanthropes and atheists and libertarians aka the most grating people to converse with#I REALLY kind of just wanted to point out that mike judge kind of already explored this topic of satirizing human stupidity#with beavis and butthead#but I think his approach with them is done a bit more successfully#like their inception is clearly making fun of aspects of a particular subset of cable-poisoned youth living in circumstances that foster it#but (I at least idk) still find them like able#and aside from them a LOT of the satire also points to the tone-deafness of otherwise educated individuals#it is actually kind of nuanced how the incompetence of the educated are highlighted#anyway I am just ranting rn and it is late#any of my moots seen idocracy? have any insights (hate) to share about it?#squack

I am sorry
I will take responsibility for this since I don't think before speaking or writing, I'm very sorry Shari. We haven't been the longest friends, but I care about you, platonically. I really do want to make up for this, before I close off, yes. I sent that ask about the gay potion and thought it was funny before you told me how THAT'S ILLEGAL and how very wrong it is, specifically how it's considered sexual assault and considered drugging someone. My community and school usually joke about rape and other inappropriate topics that I thought were normal to begin with, until now. I could've searched it up, but I was not that smart to begin with and thought I knew about this topic already. But I didn't, thank you for educating me and I'm deeply sorry I have to be the reason you take a break from your blog.
#Im actually going insane#I really fucking messed up and I am very tone deaf plus socially unaware#maybe I should learn more about how to NOT be socailly aware? Idk Idk I'm just rambling and I will start educating myself more#seprating myself from my community? I just hope I can somehow fix this#If you're reading this end#I'm sorry#with all my heart.#I'm actually trying hard not to sound edgy#but I will give you space if that's needed.
