Greetings from Batumi!!!🇬🇪
Here's the fifth day of my trip:
First of all - as the fan of And Then We Danced / და ჩვენ ვიცეკვეთ (2019) I was absolutely obsessed with the way "normal people" live in Georgia and I was not even hiding it. Just look at all these houses, they look so much like neighbourhood of Merab Lominadze!!!😍🥰🥹
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is European Square and buildings that are not old but trying hard to look like they are:
Tumblr media
In Adjarian Museum I found a sculpture ("Tbel Abuseridze", sculpted by Otar Darchia and Madud Bolkwadze) and it brings me joy to think that my picture "In Sickness And In Health" have a bit similar style!😏
Tumblr media
Also spotted sculpture of two cranes - obviously reminding me to finally draw Merab and Irakli as dancing cranes🫣
Tumblr media
I arrived at the beach and - OMG, "First Love", they are sooo much like Merab and Irakli in ATWD!!!😭
Tumblr media
If you remember the guy with a heart from day before? Turns out it's a whole series:
Tumblr media
Good message is: yes, it stopped raining!!!🥳 The weather is served with cream like desert🤭
Tumblr media
Trying to dip legs in Black Sea turned up to be a challenge: walking barefoot on these tiny rocks hurts like hell!😬 I really regret not having water shoes... The water was warm - but the big wave threw rocks at my ankles!😫 The most agressive sea shore I've ever met😑
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batumi architecture is a story of its own - there are some buildings reminding me of either a bathhouse from Spirited Away or some postpocaliptic landscape...
Tumblr media
...and right next to them are these:
Tumblr media
But these below were my favorite - so colourful!❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I looked at some children books in a book store and... Well, upbringing in sobriety this ain't, lol😆 These are illustrations of the story ჩხიკვდა ქორწილი. There is a georgian animation from 1957 with this title and initially I was excited that I found it and it shows birds dancing georgian dances - just like my #bird version ATWD series! But in the end I liked my style muuuch better😅 Illustrations in this book are definitely more pretty and cute than in that animation!👍
Tumblr media
And now have some random street art and cat art:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love how somebody designed georgian letters and roman letters in the same style!😍

hello hellooo o/
for the platonic f/o asks:
🏝 Where would you like to travel with your platonic f/o?
📌 How soon and why did you decide to make them an f/o?
🧃 Were you and your f/o childhood friends? If so, what were you like? If not, what would it have been like if you’d known each other as kids?
for mitsuru and/or niki?:3
omg haii hello haiii bestie :D going to answer for both mitsuru and niki
🏝 Travelling gets me very stressed meaning theres like. 0,5 people in the whole world whom id travel with to some place i haven't been in before, so for this one im picking from places ive visited already :3
Mitsuru and Arisu are going to Georgia :3 I had to live there for a bit + came back there several times, and its actually a pretty nice place. I already know where the best bakery in Batumi is + they're going ham on achma and khachapuri + going to the botanical garden together but accidentally going on the wrong bus so Mitsuru and Arisu have to walk five billion hours uphill through the forest on the roadside hust to get there, and then its four hours of walking through it so Mitsuru (unbothered king, still running around) has to drag Arisu back to the exit afterwards <- based on true story. They had fun tho ^w^ A lot of walks near the sea too!!
Arisu and Niki Thailand trip is so real to me. The whole time I've been in Thailand i just kept thinking that having Niki there would be sooo fun. Eating insects without people being weird about it 💗💗💗 Going to a night market to try something different for dinner every time 💗💗💗
huh i really made both of those about food huh....
📌 If we're talking about specifically establishing them as my f/os... Pretty close to this blog creation ngl ^w^ im new here teehee. I have figured out me and Niki share an unbreakable bond pretty much as soon as ive read hot limit (and main story itself to some extent tbh) and i got a soft spot for Mitsuru after reading What Day Is Today and Purple Wisterias of May so... whenever I got my hands on those tls?
🧃 Arisu isn't from Japan originally, so they had zero chance of being childhood friends TwT7 But in an alternative universe....
Arisu used to be much more awkward in the past, but they got along with younger children well enough, so I'd imagine it would be Mitsuru dragging this older nervous kid into his adventures... Fun to imagine indeed hehe :3
And Niki and Arisu i feel like would constantly visit each others houses, to the point where their parents set an extra plate for dinner every time. And when Niki was left to live alone Arisu would come over even more often so he doesn't stay alone

The Ultimate Georgia Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know
Tired of the same old travel destinations? Are you dreaming of getting lost in a land where ancient history whispers from every mountain peak and the scent of delicious food fills the air? Georgia is the escape!
Tumblr media
Best Time to Visit Georgia
Georgia’s climate is generally mild, making it a year-round destination. However, the best times to visit are during the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the scenery is breathtaking. Springtime is a feast for the eyes with blooming dogwoods and azaleas, while fall paints the landscape in vibrant hues. Summer can get hot and humid, especially in southern Georgia, but it’s also the season for festivals, concerts, and beach trips.
Must-Visit Places in Georgia
Tumblr media
The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the Jvari Monastery are prime examples of the country’s religious architecture. These UNESCO World Heritage sites are must-visit destinations. These ancient churches, historical monuments, and scenic locations make them integral parts of any Georgia travel guide. Check out the Caucasus Tours’ The wonderful Georgia, a rich 5-day sightseeing tour. Do not worry this package will cover all the places which you should not miss out on.
Located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Blue Ridge is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway offers a delightful ride through the mountains and along the Toccoa River, showcasing some of the best views in the area. Hikers will enjoy treks such as the Appalachian Trail and the Benton MacKaye Trail.
Now let’s dive into something unique which this place has to offer.
Tskaltubo is a well known destination for tetra cave therapy. This unique cave ecotherapy is a non-medicinal treatment using the microclimate of natural karst caves, benefiting the lungs – One of a kind experience you should not miss.
Next up is Borjomi, a renowned mineral water therapy place. This includes the practice of using mineral-rich spring waters for healing which is also supported by numerous studies. Mineral spring therapies offer a unique blend of natural healing and wellness. Include Borjomi in your itinerary and feel the richness the place has to offer.
Do not forget Shekvetili. Shekvetili is known for its magnetic sand therapy. Wondering what magnetic sand therapy is and why to visit this place? The healing properties of magnetic fields have been recognized in modern medicine and is referred to as magnetotherapy. Check out this place to immerse yourself into this experience.

Georgian Cuisine and Wine
A Georgia travel guide is incomplete without talking about its much-famous cuisine. Influenced by various cultures, the cuisine is a delightful fusion of tastes and textures that reflect the country’s history and geography.
Famous Dishes to Try
Tumblr media
Some of the must-try dishes in Georgia include Khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), Khinkali (dumplings), and Satsivi (chicken in walnut sauce). These dishes are a testament to Georgia’s culinary diversity and creativity.
World-renowned Georgian wine
Tumblr media
Georgia is considered the birthplace of wine, with a winemaking tradition that dates back over 8,000 years. The country’s unique winemaking methods, using large clay jars called qvevri, produce wines with distinct flavors that are gaining international recognition. With its ancient qvevri and diverse grape varieties, Georgian wines boast complex flavors and aromas. From the full-bodied Saperavi to the refreshing Rkatsiteli, Georgian wines offer a journey through centuries of tradition and terroir. Enjoy Georgian wines, chacha (grape brandy), and other local spirits.
How to Get to Georgia?
Georgia is well-connected to the rest of the world, with major international airports in Tbilisi, Batumi, and Kutaisi. Direct flights from Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia are available, making Georgia easily accessible. Overland travel from neighboring countries is also an option.
Visa and Entry Requirements
Georgia offers visa-free entry for citizens of many countries for short stays, typically up to 90 days. For others, an e-visa system is available, making the visa application process straightforward and convenient. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date.
Georgia is calling your name
Is Georgia on your list now? As you plan your journey through the Peach State, remember that Georgia’s warmth is not just in its climate—it’s in the hospitality of its people, the richness of its culture, and the beauty of its surroundings. So pack your bags, set out on an adventure, and discover why Georgia is a destination that truly has it all.

To Tokyo by public transport, Day 9 - Batumi
Tumblr media
Next day we reached Batumi and wow. SO many skyscrapers! I hate spoilers so I never had looked up Batumi. But this was insane and intense. Frankfurt is a shit against Batumi o.o
Offboarding
To my big surprise we made it pretty much in time. Not bad for a ship that started about 10 hours late. But since they do this trip every week you could expect them to have a good plan.
Sooner or later the Border Patrol will enter the ship. Not by Plane, Helicopter or Boat, but simply after we reached the docks. Some paperwork later you can go down the ship, walk though another checkup and leave the inner Harbour area.
To the left (south) you can reach the inner city. To the Nord the Train Station. I decided to walk this "distance" and hell. Think twice if you really would like to WALK that distance. Really! Burned all over I had allot of regrats.
When I started in Passau it was 2°C ... in bulgaria it was 20°C and in Batumi it was almost over 30. Without sunscreen or trees on that side of the road you end up like an boiled egg.
Schedules
The Train station was an pretty empty Building with just some counters. To my surprise I was able to get Lari out of the ATM. Seems like the V-Pay works in georgia, too? Or maybe just on this sole ATM? Good question. At least there was no V-Pay sticker on it. So I don't know? However.
The schedule on rome2rio was not accurate. Only the late train is in existence. You NEED to buy an ticket. Without a fixed seat you cannot go on board. They will fix it. And the train was nearby sold out, so I had to take the 2th class ticket. 40€ for that.
Tumblr media
(poster on the Trainstation. Only 17km from Batumi!)
I invested the 'more time' to get back into the inner city and catch up Russian Money. Finally I was able to get some. Finally.
I had no time to visit more of Batumi but this 'money change' street. But pfew it was chaotic. Well, its not the best place to visit anyway.
Long long long ...
Tumblr media
The whole Train was west European standard. Same model. Same seats. Same everything and pretty clean.
And yet. It was awfull. Don't know why but for the first time I was not able to enjoy an part of this journey at all. I just felt very exhausted.
In Tbilisi, 22 o'clock, I wanted no more risk and booked on the official Train-Company Hotel right in the train station. Another 34€ ...
wasted. The room was. Below average. The walls were paper thin. The pair on the other side had a lot of fun till 1 o'clock and all rooms share one big balcony separated by some fence where you easily could look into others rooms.
I had not really any time to take a look at Tbilisi. Too bad. But on an journey like this, you cant see them all.
End of the Day
65€ for this. Were back on solid soil so lets get over with how to waste this kind of money. I mean, it was already somehow expensive. But I'm sure there is room for more. 5007112 for example!

Engaging young people in Georgia on European Maritime Day
Tumblr media
An interview with Mariam Avakova, Black Sea Young Ambassador, youth 4 ocean advocate and EMD in Georgia event host on her experience of organising activities for an interactive scientific-educational day focusing on the Black Sea Blue Economy in Batumi, Georgia on July 5th 2022.
What activities were you involved in at the event? Mariam: I helped to design a "Black Sea & Ocean awareness - raising quiz" within EMD in my country as a part of the joint activities with Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU) held within the EU funded H2020 projects Black Sea Connect, Bridge-BS and DOORS. The quiz involved more than 50 students from local schools including a range of prizes, such as a Georgian Eco-Friendly USB cable made from melted plastic, colorful cotton bags with the EMDinMyCountry logo and t-shirts and notebooks. It was great to meet a lot of young people who are enthusiastic about what they do, it was a really entertaining and energetic atmosphere.
Tumblr media
Image: Young people take part in the Black Sea and Ocean Awareness quiz. © Mariam Avakova
What issues did the quiz raise? Mariam: The quiz included 27 logically connected questions that would help the young people learn and develop knowledge about the Black Sea and the Ocean. The overall goal was to help them understand and remember the Black Sea's endemic species, the use of ocean power to reduce emissions, our efforts to prevent marine damage, the EU's involvement in ocean and sea protection, and pollution materials.
youtube
What were the key messages that came out of the event? Mariam: Plastic pollution is an important issue for young people. As it was noted during the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, a million tons of plastic waste are produced annually, and by 2050, there may be more plastic in the oceans than fish, threatening the survival of our marine life. I'm pleased to support the #SaveOurOcean and #BlackSeas campaigns with our actions – we have to find ways to minimize plastic pollution by creating stable new plastic recycled products which can bring economic, social, and environmental benefit.
Tumblr media

Do you feel ocean awareness is an important topic in Georgia? Mariam: Georgia is moving toward becoming an EU candidate and I feel is a nation built on European values. I was overjoyed when our Deputy Minister of Education and Science visited us at the conclusion of her trip and acknowledged the eco-friendly cables and applied scientific awareness quiz as excellent ideas – it was a great inspiration. I added Georgia to the EMD map with this activity and with access to the EU media, we had the chance to share information about our country and what we are doing.
How does it feel to be a young environmental champion for your country? Mariam: I am incredibly appreciative that EU Mare and the EMDinMyCountry team chose me to host an event for European Maritime Day in Georgia. I am grateful to the Youth4Ocean Forum for inviting me to attend the EMD Ravenna Days in May and meet with Virginijus Sinkeviius, the Commissioner for Environment as a Youth4Ocean advocate. I had the honour of organising and putting Georgia on the map of #EMDinMyCounty during this period of Georgia's European membership journey. All of this motivated me to start the EMD event and contribute to the #SaveOurOcean and #BlackSeas campaigns.
Tumblr media

What would you like to see happen to keep young Georgian people engaged in the future? Mariam: Georgia, a Black Sea nation, has its own responsibility for protecting the earth, the sea, and the ocean. The young people here are very intelligent and only need one chance and some assistance to feel empowered to make improvements. I think raising awareness and educating the public might be the primary areas of action. But first, we need to let them know their thoughts are valued by including them in debates on policy and possible actions - all themes must be localized so it means something to them.
Tumblr media
Image: Cleanups are an excellent way to bring young people together. © Salome Kobaidze
There are many gaps to fill here, but proper education, providing leadership chances, developing trusting relationships and promoting free self-expression are all important. For example, activities like meetings, cleanups, and workshops encourage us to view the world through a different lens, which helps us increase awareness and think positively about the impacts we can have.

My colleague Salome Kobaidze, a Black Sea Young ambassador herself, has organized her own events, funded by Black Sea Connect, in Kobuleti and Poti, that have opened discussion about the pressures affecting the Black Sea and the blue economy in the region. These have included face-to-face meetings, physical workshops, clean-up activities and meetings with students, instructors, and Kolkheti National Park representatives. Initiatives like these link young people to blue entrepreneurship and science job opportunities, as well as providing a platform to contribute to the decision-making process. I think trusting your citizens to carry out their projects is a progressive step foward and in the future, we should be investing in those ideas through small grants and financial support.
Mariam Avakova is a Black Sea Young Ambassador, Youth4Ocean Advocate, Master of MSc Natural Resources and Black Sea Connect Scientific team member based at Tbilisi State University (TSU). The Black Sea Blue Economy event was delivered by the Georgian Ministry of Education and Science with assistance from Batumi Shota Rustaveli University.

Greetings from Georgia!🇬🇪
It's the fourth day of my trip, this time we wake up in Kutaisi: the town took its name from white river rocks
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm obsessed with this architecture as you already know😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Georgian market is very colourful
Tumblr media
Now in Prometheus Cave I could not help but think stalactites resemble churchkhelas🤭 but some are also like beetroots...
Tumblr media
coral reef...
Tumblr media
giant clay jars and mushrooms
Tumblr media
I even found a dinosaur!
Tumblr media
I think "Hall of Love" was my favorite there❤️
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The upper part looks a bit like honeycomb while the lower part reminds me of udder - I thought that maybe it's a sign that Georgia is the land of milk and honey😉
Tumblr media
This is a sculpture of a man who was watching the exit if the cave for many years, together with his dog
Tumblr media
When we arrived to Adjaria you could clearly witness the change of climat zone - on the left is what we saw before Kutaisi and on the right is near Batumi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's the great Batumi Botanical Garden:
Tumblr media
I loved these trees!!!😍
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The view at Black Sea from the garden
Tumblr media
Batumi welcomed us with rain😑
Tumblr media
But still we could analyse the condition of local buildings - apparently they are not as old as they appear, sometimes only 5 or 10 years! But made of very cheap material in very unfavorable weather condition🙄
Tumblr media
The sea shore at night was nice even in the rain❤️
Tumblr media
Ali and Nino were not moving at all☹️ Maybe it's turned off for autumn... Only the guy on the right was glowing its heart
Tumblr media
And now for something completely different: this apparently is the most common georgian bathroom - the whole floor works as a shower tray... It seemed quite confusing for us but our guide said it works really well, make the bathroom easy to clean and after opening bathroom's window it doesn't take long for it to dry👍

🎁 -rook
There's a small package waiting at Rook's house when the two get back from Louisiana. From the dates on it, it was obviously sent around the early-middle of Nat's trip abroad. However, it only reached Rook's doorstep during the roadtrip... awkward
Contained within it:
A few bags of tea leaves & a note that explains that they "Might be useful for telling people's fortunes, right?" even if Rook herself cannot drink it. They smell spicy and full of depth.
A postcard from Batumi (day) and many photographs of Batumi (night... obviously.) However, Nat has tried to draw herself in the daytime photograph. A later addition appears to be some scrawled on fire around her. ("You may note that I drew myself on fire. I just got carried away with my drawing... I'm fine, I promise. Artistic realism overtook me.-" etc etc.)
A small fridge magnet of a goofy looking dragon
A whole fucking badass old fancy dagger??? The note explains its purpose in the national heritage and formal dress but more importantly holy shit it's like sharp and shit.
A handwritten note in the composer's simple script expressing her affection, as well as apologizing for having to leave without warning. It's not overly poetic or romantically written, but Nat tries to get her intentions and feelings across. It ends with the odd phrase, "blue, Nat"
[Since it is likely Nat would be present when the package is found, it must be stated that she hides in the van. She tries to play it cool to hide her embarrassment.] @malkavian-rights-activist

Four Short Stories
I’ve been sharing quick, minimally constructed stories with my friend Peter, as a way of batting away the rust around my writing. Now that I’ve sat with them for a week or more, and tinkered with them not at all, I’m ready to graduate them to Duck Beater, my horcrux, I mean my blog.
I HAVE RECENTLY MET SOME VERY POWERFUL GODS
Oh, I stopped going. I gave up the gym because I wasn’t changing. What was my libido then? Tortured, I think, by coltish undergrads in form-fitting sweatpants. Weirdly, I noticed my mood improved if I looked at dogs. If I saw beautiful, loyal dogs in the evenings, open and knowable and kind—I felt my soul swell with every passing. It was a harder kick than studying strangers on the stationary bikes ahead of me. Weirder still, I developed a kind of superstition about these dogs on my nightly jogs. I sought them out, for the contact high. I would say to myself, “I’m gonna see five gods tonight.” Gods not dogs. “I’m gonna see six gods tonight.” I didn’t need to touch them but I did need to pass them and look into their eyes. “I’m gonna see seven gods tonight.” Anyway. That’s why I run outside.
PERFECT GAMES FOR COWORKERS WHO ARE IN LOVE
This one is called “Be Messy, Make Mistakes,” so named for the legend on a coffee mug. The rules are simple:
Wait for it.
Wait a day more for it.
The comparison rankles, but it’s impossibly obvious: Your design lead looks like a young Joseph Stalin (of the 1902 mugshot). Same wavy hair, oiled and swept away from the face, the sides short enough to reveal perfect “number 6” ears. Then the well-groomed beard; the merry dark eyes; the propensity for scarves worn under woolen coats, slightly too large.
Say: “You look like a young Joseph Stalin.” There’s no taking it back. “See.”
Present the results of a quick Google search (two tabs you’ve already opened).
“That’s pretty wild!”
“You’re really a dead ringer.”
“Well, my family’s Russian.”
“Mm, so—so there could be—”
“A history that ties me to a war criminal, yes.”
You’re sitting side by side now with the perfect excuse to study his face, then the face of young Soso. For this photo, the Okhrana picked up Stalin just after the Batumi Massacre, and his expression, you find, is alight with the flame of revolution. For the sake of comparison, you're allowed to stare deeply, dreamily into your design lead's eyes again.
While he’s here, review some of the updated marketing collateral. Every item earns an affectionate knee touch. (Seriously, he taps your kneecap.)
You say, “New photo.”
He taps.
You say, “Colors print ready.”
He taps.
You say, “Ts and Cs.”
He taps.
Neither of you wins if he leaves his wife and kids.
WHEN THE SHARK BITES
One narrative that preoccupied me during my first serious relationship had to do with the Wright brothers—what the brothers were like as gawky teens. How they celebrated Halloween, where they rode bikes, cemeteries they explored on dares—that sort of thing. I was just out of college and crushing, apparently, on Wilbur, whose photo I’d seen at the Wayne County Historical Museum. I hungered for anachronism. I hungered, too, for love, and so gobbled up a dashing young man in Mississippi. While he fulfilled his tenure in Teach for America, I waited tables in Ohio and, when the spirit moved me, drove out to Dayton to explore the Wright archives.
This was a long time ago, when I was really into Thomas Pynchon and took everything for a sign. Everything conferred a “storm system of group suffering and need,” and there I was, pockets full of cash tips, full up of suffering and need, lamenting the distance from my lover and staunching an uncanny stream of rejection letters from graduate writing programs. Nobody wanted to fund my historiographic metafictions. And who could blame them.
The Wrights were awkward teenagers torqued more fabulously awkward by their mother’s slow death, their father’s increased absences, and the unsuccessful pursuits of their older brothers, who seemed to fail at everything they tried. Wilbur and Orville read widely enough to know their fortunes were unhappy (indeed, they sometimes signed their letters “Smike”). They lived in a small, comfortable city that elevated their ambitions to a high, miserable plateau, and their attempts to paper over poisoned circumstances—to write themselves an antidote—became a project that possibly saved themselves and their younger sister Katherine from fates like those in Dickens’ sentimental tragedies.
The stories I wrote, taken all together, would form The Falconers, a psychological novel that connected slender, depressed fellows to future, strapping heroes. How do lowly men become legends? How do cycling-obsessed boys conquer the skies? (It was that kind of story, with zits.) Thrillingly, my boyfriend moved to Falconer Avenue, just across from the middle school in Holly Springs. Every other month I made the eleven-hour drive, accepting blow jobs and raw dogs and golden showers as reward—monoliths of frantic, first-time sex to confirm our completely successful relationship. And this frosting? Was it frosting! I wrote chapters for The Falconers on Falconer Avenue. The world made perfect sense.
Of course, none of it “came to pass,” as Pynchon’s narrator in Against the Day is fond of saying. The novel fell apart. The boyfriend and I broke up. Still, when I revisit Wright letters and Wright biographies, I’m hounded by a mysterious and entirely inappropriate erection—that is, a kind of Pynchonian kink.
AFTER PICKING A FIGHT IN A BAR
People were gentler with me, I think, with my black eye. It was the week between Christmas and the New Year, I had obviously been in a row, not elbowed, not tripped, and so in addition to looking smaller and darker and sadder than is usual for the holidays, I also looked more crazed and vicious. Why this would compel others to treat me gently does not signify a particular gentleness, or generosity, on their parts—but rather, I detected, a means to protect themselves. If I was not able to defend myself then surely they could defend against me. Kindness is a soft weapon. I rarely wielded it but was nonetheless always disarmed by it. Gentleness did not make me more gentle. I spent the week puzzled by unnecessary soft gestures and soothing voices. I spent the week reminding myself my special treatment was because I looked beat down, not because I was special. Besides, what could that mean? “Special.” Chosen, preferred, anointed, deserving, etc. I sometimes thought about what the world owed me, that week. I landed on “abstention.” Not mercy or forgiveness but rather a quiet space to be alone in earnest, all obligations off, responsibilities tamped down, remission. I had the week off work, which, my brother let me know, was a kind of mercy, because it’s always professionally suspect to arrive at work with a shiner. Colleagues ask questions and bosses harbor suspicions. I was fortunate in that my face could recuperate without scrutiny.

The renewal of Georgia's visa-free one-year-stay permission in half a day
Tumblr media
Georgia, a small country in the Caucasus, allows Japanese passport holders a visa-free stay of one year. This also means you must leave the country once before one year has passed since your last entry. In 2021, I had several trips between Georgia and other countries, so I did not have to think about the day renewal of visa-free permission, but in 2022, I have not been outside Georgia at all. At the end of September, the deadline for my departure is approaching. I wish I could have traveled somewhere, but this time I didn't have the chance, and the time has come.
The Georgian currency, the Lari, has been appreciating against the US dollar and the Euro in the past six months, especially against the Japanese yen, which has increased about 1.5 times in the past year, and the image that many people had of Georgia as a low-cost country where you can spend a long time has completely disappeared. It is unclear why the Lari is this high, but one factor may be that there are no notable concerns about energy supply like in the EU countries. However, there is no doubt that electricity and gas prices have risen considerably over the past year, although not to the same extent as in Western Europe. Looking at the price tags at the local French supermarkets, food prices and other prices have been rising slowly and steadily. Because of the strong Lari exchange rate, imported goods should be cheaper, but unfortunately, this is not the case. Therefore, those coming to Georgia from Japan, the US, or other countries should expect to spend more than twice as much on living and accommodation as they did a few years ago. Living in rural Japan and the U.S. may be less expensive than in urban Georgia. Summer is the high season here in Batumi, and hotel charges and apartment rent always have expensive. Still, since the beginning of this year, it has increased dramatically. Combined with the mysterious, strong Lari exchange rate, I can imagine it is becoming harder for the average traveler from abroad to visit.
I'm getting sidetracked, but I decided to do renewal of visa-free stay-permission before the September departure deadline. Renewing visa-free stay-permission means leaving the country before the expiration date of the stay and re-entering the country not much later. I had the experience of renewing visa-free stay permission overland several times when I was in Thailand about ten years ago. At that time, entry to Thailand by land was a 14-day visa-free stay, and I remember having renewed visa-free stay permission every two weeks. I think it took about 4 hours from Bangkok to Cambodia's border. There was a bus tour with a dedicated vendor, so we took that, and it took us a whole day. Maybe things are very different now, though.
So, this is the renewal of Georgia's visa-free stay permission in half a day. Once re-entry is granted, Georgia allows an additional year of visa-free stay from that time, regardless of air or land travel. It is about 20 km from Old Batumi to the Turkish border village (Salpi), and it takes about one hour by city bus, but it costs only 0.3 Lari (about USD 0.1) each way! It can be said to be conscientious because the same flat rate as in the city is applied even for 20 kilometers. This is still three times the price of 0.1 Lari, which was 0.1 Lari until last year.
Tumblr media
If you take bus #16, you should be able to enter the border checkpoint without getting lost, as the last stop is right near the entrance to the checkpoint.
Tumblr media
The entrance to the border checkpoint is at the far right of the photo above, and as soon as you enter, you will see the Georgia passport control booth. I just had my passport ready and took it out when it was my turn, and I could leave the country smoothly without any problems. Following the route, we continued walking down the long aisle toward the Turkish side, and now the Turkish immigration booth appeared. Perhaps because it was around midday in the height of summer in late August, there was already no line, and we finally arrived at the booth after nearly an hour of chaos. The immigration inspector just checked my passport quickly and stamped my entry into Turkey without asking me anything in particular. It was so easy that it was a little discouraging. It was probably the shortest immigration check I have ever gone through, except for Japan, my home country. I have a lot of stamps and expired work visas left in my passport, so some countries take a lot of time to check my passport carefully. So I was a bit impressed this time. After immigration, there is a baggage check, just like at an airport. When I was about to remove my belt from my pants, as is my habit, the customs official informed me that I did not need to do so because we were not in an airport. That's right, and I was a little embarrassed.
After baggage screening, you walk a short distance and down the stairs to the Turkish side of the building.
Tumblr media
There was nothing exceptional around the Turkish side, and there seemed to be only one cafeteria cum store nearby. Oh, yes, and don't forget. A mosque was there to welcome us, as it is in a Muslim country. However, there is a mosque next to my apartment in Batumi, so I did not feel I had entered Turkey.
Tumblr media
Since this is a renewal of visa-free stay permission in half a day, there is no reason to stay longer on the Turkish side, as I did not have the Turkish Lira ready. I will be re-entering Georgia immediately. A little thought crossed my mind that if I were too early, there was a possibility that the entry data might not have gone to the Turkish side at passport control, so I ended up hanging around outside for an hour or so.
Now, re-entering Georgia, I was a bit nervous because I had never challenged the renewal of visa-free stay permission through such a short stay (less than an hour) before. You have to enter the checkpoint from the Turkish side entrance, about 30 meters away from the exit where you entered Turkey. There were far fewer people at this time than at the time of entry, and my turn came quickly. I was expecting to be asked something after submitting my passport as usual, but I was not asked anything and was able to leave the country smoothly as well. Turkey is the coolest!
Next up is the riskiest of all: re-entry into Georgia. As someone who had left the country just two hours earlier and was about to re-enter in such a short time, it was no wonder I was asked any questions I might have. I didn't have any answers prepared in advance; I just thought I would give honest answers when asked. I knew I would not be taken to another room, but I was still worried. As it happened, there was only one other person besides me in the immigration booth on the Georgia side, and immigration inspection began immediately. I submitted my passport and the immigration officer started checking it. As I was waiting to see what he would ask me, the immigration officer seemed to say something. I said, "Excuse me?" and he said, "Hideyuki?" When I answered "Yes, he said "Welcome" and stamped my passport. I was able to re-enter the country, and my renewal of Georgia's visa-free stay permission was a success. It may be my imagination, but it seems that every time I enter Georgia, I am asked for only my first name, not both my last name and first name. Oh well, it doesn't matter either way.
As a result, it took about four hours from when I left home to when I returned.
Incidentally, Georgia and Turkey do not require proof of vaccination or PCR testing at immigration. Batumi, which once had PCR testing stations all over the city, has lost all trace of its former glory. I sometimes see people wearing masks, but the percentage is definitely less than 1%. Japan seems to be a somewhat different world, though.
