My first job out of graduate school was to develop an e-commerce application for a manufacturing behemoth. The idea was to build a web-based application for internal sales teams to place orders on behalf of the customers and eliminate paper processing. Don’t judge it using today’s standard. At the time, almost two decades ago, it was a revolutionary idea, and a tremendous undertaking. As a new computer science grad, I was excited and took on this task with immense enthusiasm.
The first functional web order center was released a few months later. After that we’d do three to four major releases per year, with many point releases in between to add small features and fix bugs. We soon developed a complex pricing system to automatically calculate thousands of customizable parts and products, and started rolling it out to other countries outside of the U.S. By the time I left the company three and a half years later, the web order center was rolled out to over 30 countries, with over $1 billion going through it every year.
Looking back, that was my first digital transformation experience. At the time, I had no idea that my entire professional career would evolve from it. My 15-year journey with IBM took me around the world, working with many customers across industries to help them transform their businesses one way or another. I have witnessed many successful transformations where companies emerge or stay on as industry leaders, but I have also seen many enterprises struggle to transform and adjust to the new ways of doing business.
A study by Gartner found that half of CEOs expect their industry to be substantially or unrecognizably transformed by digital. While talking to IT leaders around the world, I learned that many of them believe that digital transformation is the biggest challenge, but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in our generation. However, research shows that 70% of all digital transformations fail. No clearly defined best practices, poorly defined tool integrations, limited ability to deploy across platforms, and/or struggling to implement new technologies are on top of the list.

Remote monitoring of plants using hyperspectral imaging has become an important tool for the study of plant growth, development, and physiology. Many applications are oriented towards use in field environments to enable non-destructive analysis of crop responses due to factors such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and disease, e.g., using tram, drone, or airplane mounted instruments. The field setting introduces a wide range of uncontrolled environmental variables that make validation and interpretation of spectral responses challenging, and as such lab- and greenhouse-deployed systems for plant studies and phenotyping are of increasing interest. In this study, we have designed and developed an open-source, hyperspectral reflectance-based imaging system for lab-based plant experiments: the HyperScanner. The reliability and accuracy of HyperScanner were validated using drought and salt stress experiments with Arabidopsis thaliana.

An API, short for application programming interface, is a tool used to share content and data between software applications.  APIs are used in a variety of contexts, but some examples include embedding content from one website into another, dynamically posting content from one application to display in another application, or extracting data from a database in a more programmatic way than a regular user interface might allow.
Many scholarly publishers, databases, and products offer APIs to allow users with programming skills to more powerfully extract data to serve a variety of research purposes.  With an API, users might create programmatic searches of a citation database, extract statistical data, or dynamically query and post blog content.
Below is a list of commonly used scholarly resources at MIT that make their APIs available for use.  If you have programming skills and would like to use APIs in your research, use the information below to get an overview of some available APIs.

What it does: Gives programmatic access to all of the arXiv data, search and linking facilities

Key Considerations for Building a Robust Data Strategy
Many business and IT leaders are focused on developing comprehensive data strategies that enable data-driven decision making. A 2016 IDG Enterprise survey found that 53 percent of companies were implementing or planning to implement data-driven projects within the next 12 months—specifically projects undertaken with the goal of generating greater value from existing data.[1] With the growing importance of AI and advanced analytics today, it seems a safe assumption that this number has only increased over time.
The concept of building a data strategy is such a hot topic that top-tier universities are creating executive-level courses on the subject,[2] while industry observers are predicting that by 2020, 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies will have a chief data officer (CDO) or equivalent position.[3]
Yet despite all of this momentum, the concept of a data strategy remains new to many organizations. They haven’t thought about it in the past, so it is uncharted territory, or maybe even an unknown-unknown. With that thought in mind, in this post I will walk through some key considerations for building a robust data strategy.
Why is a robust data strategy important?  A data strategy is a business-driven initiative, and how technology is involved is an important factor.  No matter what, you always start with a set of business objectives, and having the right data when you need it results in business advantages.
The Big Picture
A well-thought-out data strategy will have components specific to one’s own organization and application area. There are, however, important commonalities to any approach. Some of the more important ones include methods for data acquisition, data persistence, feature identification and extraction, analytics, and visualization, three of which I will discuss here.
When I give talks about the data science solutions my team develops, I often reference a diagram describing how many data scientists organize the information flow through their experiments. A good data strategy needs to be informed by these concepts—your choices will either facilitate or hinder how your analysts are able to extract insights from your data!

Data Acquisition and Persistence
Before outlining a data strategy, one needs to enumerate all the sources of data that will be important to the organization. In some businesses, these could be real-time transactions, while in others these could be free-text user feedback or log files from climate control systems. While there are countless potential sources of data, the important point is to identify all of the data that will play into the organization’s strategy at the outset. The goal is to avoid time-consuming additional steps further along in the process.
In one project I worked on when I was but a wee data scientist, we needed to obtain free-text data from scientific publications and merge the documents with metadata extracted from a second source. The data extraction process was reasonably time-consuming, so we had to do this as a batch operation and store the data to disk. After we completed the process of merging together our data sources, I realized I forgot to include a data source we were going to need for annotating some of the scientific concepts in our document corpus. Because we had to do a separate merge step, our experimental workflow took a great deal more time, necessitating many avoidable late hours at the office. The big lesson here: Proactively thinking through all the data that will be important to your organization is a guaranteed way to save some headaches down the road.
Once you have thought through data acquisition, it’s easier to make decisions about how (or if) these data will persist and be shared over time. To this end, there have never been more options for how one might want to keep data around. Your choices here should be informed by a few factors, including the data types in question, the speed at which new data points arrive (e.g., is it a static data set or real-time transactional data?), whether your storage needs to be optimized for reading or writing data, and which internal groups are likely to need access. In all likelihood, your organization’s solution will involve a combination of several of these data persistence options.
Your choices are also likely to change in big versus small data situations. How do you know if you have big data? If it won’t fit in a standard-size grocery bag, you may have big data. In all seriousness though, my rule of thumb is once infrastructure (i.e., the grocery bag) is a central part of your data persistence solution, one is effectively dealing with big data. There are many resources that will outline the advantages and disadvantages of your choices here. These days, many downstream feature extraction and analytical methods have libraries for transacting with the more popular choices here, so it’s best to base one’s decision on expected data types, optimizations, and data volume.
Feature Identification and Extraction
In data science, a “feature” is the information a machine learning algorithm will use during the training stage for a predictive model, as well as what it will use to make a prediction regarding a previously-unseen data point. In the case of text classification, features could be the individual words in a document; in financial analytics, a feature might be the price of a stock on a particular day.
Most data strategies would do well to steer away from micromanaging how the analysts will approach this step of their work. However, there are organization-level decisions that can be made that will facilitate efficiency and creativity here. The most important approach, in my mind, is fostering an environment that encourages developers to draw from, and contribute to, the open source community. This is essential.
Many of the most effective and common methods for feature extraction and data processing are well-understood, and excellent approaches have been implemented in the open source community (e.g., in Python*, R*, or Spark*). In many situations, analysts will get the most mileage out of trying one of these methods. In a research setting, they may be able to try out custom methods that are effective in a particular application domain. It will benefit both employee morale and your organization’s reputation if they are encouraged to contribute these discoveries back to the open source community.
Predictive Analytics
Again, I think it’s key for an organization-level data strategy to avoid micromanagement of the algorithm choices analysts make in performing predictive analytics, but I would still argue that there are analytical considerations that should be included in a robust data strategy. Overseeing data governance—the management of the availability, usability, integrity, and security of your organization’s data is a central part of the CDO’s role—and analytics is where a lot of this can breakdown or reveal holes in your strategy. Even if your strategy leverages NoSQL databases, if the relationships between data points are poorly understood or not documented, it’s possible that the analysts could be missing important connections, or even prevented from accessing certain data altogether.
Overarching Considerations
To take a step back, a data strategy should include identification of software tools that your organization will rely upon. Intel can help here. "Journalism 360 grant winners announced"
While advances in immersive storytelling—360 video, virtual reality, augmented reality and drones—have the potential to make journalism richer and more engaging, it can be challenging for journalists to adopt and embrace these new tools. In 2016, the Google News Lab, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Online News Association created Journalism 360, a coalition of hundreds of journalists from around the world to build new skills required to tell immersive stories. Today, the coalition announced the 11 winners of its first grant challenge, which will fund projects to tackle some of the most critical challenges facing the advancement of immersive journalism: the need for better tools and trainings, the development of best practices, and new use cases.
Here’s a bit more about the winning projects:
Aftermath VR app: New Cave Media, led by Alexey Furman in Kyiv, Ukraine. An app that applies photogrammetry, which uses photography to measure and map objects, to recreate three-dimensional scenes of news events and narrate what happened through voiceover and archival footage.
AI-generated Anonymity in VR Journalism: University of British Columbia, led by Taylor Owen, Kate Hennessy and Steve DiPaol in Vancouver, Canada. Helps reporters test whether an emotional connection can be maintained in immersive storytelling formats when a character’s identity is hidden.
Community and Ethnic Media Journalism 360: City University of New York, led by Bob Sacha in New York.  Makes immersive storytelling more accessible to community media (local broadcasters, public radio and TV, etc.) and ethnic media through hands-on training and access to equipment. The team also aims to produce a “how to” guide for using immersive storytelling to cover local events such as festivals.
Dataverses: Information Visualization into VR Storytelling: The Outliers Collective, led by Oscar Marin Miro in Barcelona, Spain. Makes it easier to integrate data visualizations into immersive storytelling through a platform that includes virtual reality videos, photos and facts. For example, a user could show a map of the Earth highlighting places without water access, and link each area to a virtual reality video that explores the experience of living there.
Facing Bias: The Washington Post, led by Emily Yount in Washington, D.C.  Develops a smartphone tool that will use augmented reality to analyze a reader's facial expressions while they view images and statements that may affirm or contradict their beliefs. The aim is to give readers a better understanding of their own biases.
Spatial and Head-Locked Stereo Audio for 360 Journalism: NPR, led by Nicholas Michael in Washington, D.C. Develops best practices for immersive storytelling audio by producing two virtual reality stories with a particular focus on sound-rich scenes. The project will explore, test and share spatial audio findings from these experiments.
Immersive Storytelling from the Ocean Floor:  MIT Future Ocean Lab, led by Allan Adams in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Creates a camera and lighting system to produce immersive stories underwater and uncover the hidden experiences that lie beneath the ocean’s surface.
Location-Based VR Data Visualization: Arizona State University, Cronkite School of Journalism, led by Retha Hill in Tempe, Arizona. Helps journalists and others easily create location-based data visualizations in a virtual reality format. For example, users could explore crime statistics or education data on particular neighborhoods through data overlays on virtual reality footage of these areas.
Voxhop by Virtual Collaboration Research Inc.:  Ainsley Sutherland in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Makes it easy to craft audio-driven virtual reality stories through a tool that would allow journalists to upload, generate or construct a three-dimensional environment and narrate the scene from multiple perspectives. For example, a reporter could construct a three-dimensional crime scene and include voiceovers detailing accounts of what transpired in the space.
Scene VR: Northwestern University Knight Lab, led by Zach Wise in Evanston, Illinois. Develops a tool that would make it easier for journalists and others to create virtual reality photo experiences that include interactive navigation, using their smartphone or a camera.
The Wall: The Arizona Republic and USA TODAY Network, led by Nicole Carroll in Phoenix, Arizona. Uses virtual reality, data and aerial video, and documentary shorts to bring the story of the proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico to life.
Over the course of the next year, the project leads will share their learnings on the Journalism 360 blog. Because this is all about building community, the recipients will also gather at the Online News Association’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. this September to discuss their projects, answer questions and share their progress. In early 2018, they will present their finished projects.
