My request for Adoptive son got accidentally posted with a different response and then deleted a while back, so I've come back to see if you're willing to do a little of the Summoned Demon au instead? 🥺 pretty please? I keep hoping it'll come back up and I'm excited haha
Danny flies while blinking through his tears, trying his best to find the giant clown Alex has mentioned. He is unsure what will happen to the police officer's ghost now that he has been captured, and that sends his heart into turmoil.
Every part of his core wanted him to turn around to rescue Alex. It went against his very soul to run, but he could think rationally enough to know that if he did, nothing good would come of it.
At best, he would give Alex enough time to hide inside the building he was anchored to; at worst, both of them would be shipped off to some lab and ripped apart.
No. He couldn't save Alex, and couldn't let his sacerfice to help Danny escape go to waste.
He needed to regroup. Figure out a plan, establish communication, or do something to escape the crazy cultists. It didn't help that they obviously had connections with police who were hunting him down to return him.
Thankfully, Danny has some experience with escaping government bodies. Just as long as he keeps moving and uses his powers wisely, he should be able to find somewhere to catch his breath.
Danny wipes at his eyes, pushing himself to fly faster.
Thanks to his invisibility, no one notices his form fly over their heads. A steady flow of people moves underneath him, going through another mundane day. It's crowded, busy and noisy.
So different from the city of Amity Park. It's a jarring reminder that only this morning, he had been dreading his upcoming math exam, and now he was running for his life.
At least the hook feeling in his navel has lessened. Using Phantom's abilities didn't take as much effort as it did a few hours ago.
Likely, whatever that voice activation cell did was starting to lose effect. Based on how his body responded, it would be two or three hours before he would be back to full strength.
As he finished the thought, Danny felt his body grow heavy, as if a weight was suddenly thrown around his ankles.
With a shout of alarm, Danny plummeted downwards, struggling against the cruel grips of gravity. He felt his invisibility fall away just as he landed face first on the ground between an open of people.
The force of his face has him skitting against the pavement, tumbling over and over as screams from the started civilians echo through the crowd. Danny rolls three times before smacking against a pull, upside down, with his legs folded over near his head.
He groans. "That is going to leave so many bruises."
His healing factor was kicking in already working on easing the aching in his spine and face. Slowly, as to not agitate his wounds, he unfolds, bracing his hands on the ground, and leaps up.
When the world is right, he finds himself standing before a little metal fence separating the street from a restaurant's dining area. The two boys Danny saw at the cult are sitting at the table right in front of him.
They were the ones who were pleading with the other boy who clung to his legs. Danny blinks. "Oh, hello."
The one on the left, a ginger that reminds him surprisingly of Kyle Weston down to his choice of clothes, lets a blood-curdling scream before his eyes roll back into his head in a dead faint. Danny leaps over the fence, catching him before he hits the ground.
The other boy watches like a deer caught in headlights, frozen with absolute terror all over his face. The fork in his white knuckle grip is bending at a strange angle as he makes small whimpers, almost as if he's scared to talk.
Danny carefully sets the one he caught on the ground, ensuring his head is cushioned before tugging at his clothes. He unzips the hoodie the boy was wearing and pulls at his neck collar to ensure it's not bothering his breaking.
Only after ensuring that the boy is breathing correctly does Danny move down to carefully left up his legs, remembering the lessons his father taught him in case he ever witnessed someone faint.
The teenager sitting at the table starts to speak, sounding panicky, but Danny ignores him in favor of placing the Kyle-Wannabe's legs on the chair's cushion. He tugs on the ankles in his hold, making sure it's angled in a way that does not hurt him spin but can allow more blood flow to his head.
"Can someone please call an ambulance?" He demands of the watching crowd only to have the majority of them cower back. He makes a face, causing a waitress to flinch so hard she stumbles over a nearby table.
Right, they can't understand him. He raises his hand above his head, attempting to mimic the ambulance light while speaking slowly. "Am-bu-lance. wee-oww wee-oww?"
A child bursts into tears. Danny drops his hands, letting them hang loosely at his side. The sea of faces surrounding him is all edged with fear, which makes his stomach turn. "None of you understand me. You're scared of me."
"I'm not," A man says, stepping away from the crowd. His transparent body lets him know it's a ghost. That and the dripping cinder block chained to his legs, along with his flouting hair as if though he were underwater, are significant indicators of his death. "You're trying to get him to a hospital?"
"Yes!" Danny points at him, forgetting himself for a moment. The people standing behind the ghost scramble to get out of the path of his pointing.
The man tilts his head slightly. "What language are you speaking?"
"English?"
"Odd. It sounds different. I would know since I speak nine languages." The man grunts, his strange accent sounding like a melody to the ear were it not for the watery effect. It's sad how it affects his handsomeness, with the green and silver trimming of his suit and the snake necklace and rings he is wearing.
The ghost calmly flouts to a poster on the restaurant's wall a few steps away from Danny, knocking his knuckles against some symbols. "Point to this word, then the boy. That'll let the crowd know to get some medical attention."
Danny stares at him for a moment before the murder victim clears his throat impatiently, and it snaps him into action. Rushing over, he points to the words, then the Kyle-wannabee, and back again to the word. When the crowd continues to stare, Danny repeats the motion more urgently until the boy at the table finally catches on.
He pulls out a rectangular device from his pocket- the same one that girl had earlier this morning-tapping it with shaking fingers and speaking in rushed panic words.
The ghost at the poster nods approvingly. "Well done. Now, leave the scene before the authorities arrive."
"What?"
"I was an immigration lawyer in life. One of the only ones in this cursed city that actually gave a shit, and it got me killed. I know how they treat people who aren't from around here and how to help you when a language barrier gets in the way. Trust me, kid, it's better to get gone in this situation." As he speaks, the ghosts float back to Danny, shaking the chains around his feet for emphasis. There is a cold, calculating glint in his eye as he regards the silent crowd . "The panic will settle soon, and these people will form a mob. Get going."
Danny throws one last look at the unconscious boy before he realizes that the fear on people's faces hasn't lessened. It's growing, and he knows a witch hunt will start soon.
He's seen it before on the faces of Amity Park back when he was Inviza-Bill. He twists on his feet, running away with the lawyer flying behind him.
The older man gives out curt directions at every turn, slowly guiding him outside of the part of the city. Danny's legs are starting to burn when the sight of a large, broken-down amusement park comes into view.
The lawyer tells him which part of the fence board is loose enough for him to slide in and then instructs him to go to the fun house shaped like a giant clown head. Danny scrambles through the hole, hissing when a few loose nails catch on his skin, but he finally stumbles through, only to be overwhelmed by a new large and bustling crowd.
A crowd made of thousands of ghosts that walk or fly about without a care in the world. They are wearing various different eras of clothing, blending, and some have ghastly marks on their bodies, indicating their deaths.
The majority, however, are people with large, crazed smiles frozen on their faces. He gawks at all of them, not used to seeing so many of the dead in one place outside of the Ghost Zone.
"Don't just stand there with your mouth open." The lawyer snaps at Danny's back. "Get out of sight now!"
"Tom?" A woman in a gown that looks like she was present for the beheading of Marie Antonette steps in front of the drowned layer, Tom, with a look of confusion. "Who are you talking to?"
"Him." Tom nods his head at Danny, who offers the woman a wave. She reels back, opening her mouth like she's about to scream,m but Tom snaps forward, slapping a hand on her lips before she can. "Do not! What do you think will happen when all these murder victims realize he can communicate with them? He just escaped from being mobbed."
The man glances over his shoulder at Danny. "Go into the fun house. Act like you can't see or hear the rest of the ghosts. Walk through them if you have to."
"I can't," Danny whispers, his heart suddenly beating wildly. None of the ghosts noticed him, but that could change in a second. "Ghosts are solid to me. If I try to walk through them, we'll just end up bumping against each other."
Tom lets out a very put-upon sigh. "Then walk around them. Now go. It's not safe to talk in the open."
Danny knows Tom is helping him but feels vaguely threatened as he walks stiffly to the giant clown's head. He fights to keep his gaze straight, watching ghosts step out of his path while some flout closer, looking curious. He fights to not flinch at the ones with the enormous smile as if someone had cut them into their faces.
This is making his stomach turn.
"Who's this?" An older man asks Tom and the woman that follows him. His lips are pulled into two upturns, showing tight yellow teeth in a similar craze grin.
"Street kid," Tom grunts from somewhere behind him.
"He's likely looking for shelter from the cold." The woman adds, though her voice is slightly strained. "Tom wants to make sure he gets settled."
"Where is he going to?" The old man questions, his voice a little odd because he has to speak behind his teeth, trapped in a smile. "The only warm place here is the Joker's old place, and not even the dead go in there."
Danny ignores the old man's words, speed walking all the way to the entrance of the Fun House. He notices that various ghosts stop to watch him out of the corner of his eye as he finally passes the doorway into the building. Shaking his head, the old man lingers just a little outside of it. "Fool. Even if the Joker is not here, it's not a place to go."
Neither Tom nor the woman responds as they follow Danny inside. Tom is facing the wall when he mutters. "Close the door."
As soon as the wood seals shut, with a few ghosts lingering gaze trapped outside, Danny collapses on the floor, letting out a breath he wasn't aware he was holding. "That was terrifying."
"What in the world is going on, Tom!" The woman hisses, apparently unable to hold back any longer while crossing her arms, "Who is this?"
Tom holds up a hand in her face, which makes her gasp in offense, but his eyes linger on Danny's crumbled form. " There is a dictionary tucked away in the third office. Go get it."
"What? Why?"
"Because we'll use that to help you communicate with the living locals. I can read, and you can point."
Danny's eyes widen. "That's a clever idea!"
"Of course it is. I'm one the cleverest men to walk this stupid city's streets." Tom smirks like the snakes he's wearing. "We don't have much time. Knowing the idiots of Gotham, Batman will be tipped off and on his way here as we speak."

Ok it’s not like I go here really, but I’ve been reading a bunch of DPxDC recently because it’s very good, and I had an idea that won’t go anywhere
The various gangs in Gotham have callsigns/uniforms or something right??? If not, they should, and imma say they do. Anyway. Redhood I think didn’t think too hard about what people in his gang on his turf should wear for identification purposes, but they sure did. And what they came up with was Red.
Wearing red in the vicinity of the ‘Bad Part’ of Gotham?? Part of the red hood gang. Generally head gear is the preferred method of wearing red. Red hats and beanies, red head scarfs and hijabs, red headbands, red masks. The idea has been communicated. To a certain point, wearing red even if you aren’t officially part of the gang is a great way to get an in with them, or be under protection if you’re the right age in the right area, as long as you’re willing to risk getting roped into low stakes gang activity, which can range from working the counter at money laundering sites to community service (guarding clinics and shelters and volunteering) to making deliveries to destroying certain hostile architecture. (Hood saves the real jobs with cops and shootings and turf disputes for actual members, that he knows the names faces and skills of, and who are at least above 18, but preferably over 20, and who wear real gear he supplies them with, not just whatever’s in their closet that’s red) (this does not entirely stop the smaller ‘members’ from getting into their own fights with the cops and turf wars, but Jason has found that giving them Something to do that feels like direct action helps curb those tendencies. And it’s not like those things aren’t things that don’t need doing, so it’s a win win. Mostly)
Danny, bless him, does not know any of this. But has been staying in the sketchier areas of Gotham because that’s where people don’t care how old you are or if your papers are real or not, and he absolutely does not want people looking into how old he is and wether his papers are real or not. He is also wearing an inadvisable and vaguely conspicuous amount of red. His converse are red, his signature baseball tee is white and red, and his hoodie is also red.
Clearly, this kid (he’s like 17) really wants in with the hood gang.
And eventually, they oblige him.
Random people will approach Danny and ask/tell him that them and a couple others are going somewhere to do (insert vaguely/definitely illegal job or act of community service here) and Danny, who is deeply directionless in life currently, and also pretty assured in his ability to eat danger for breakfast, and has never met an institutional authority he doesn’t disrespect at least a little bit, is totally down for some civil disobedience and chaotic good shenanigans.
And then it spirals from there. Like. A worrying amount.
It takes Danny actual months, almost a year, to realize that he’s been low key slow cooked into the criminal underbelly of Gotham, and like… he’s not really mad about it?? Honestly if he had a choice when he came to Gotham, he probably would have picked the redhood gang anyway. He just seems to vibe with them on a… Spiritual Level…
Hm
Anyway
Years go by, and while Danny doesn’t have the most going for him in terms of a normal person life, vis a vis higher education, official employment, health insurance, dating life, or any other benchmark one uses to measure the trajectory of their lives— Danny’s feeling pretty good! Jazz, Tucker, and Sam have all finagled their ways into Gotham, (Tucker has a WE internship, Jazz is working/doing work studies at Arkham, Sam does what she likes now that she is a legal adult and has her inheritance, and what she likes is environmental activism, and occasionally being spotted with fellow activist Damian Wayne, and someone who may or may not be poison ivy, sources differ) and Danny finds his obsession suspiciously well served as a hood goon. Hood hench? Redgoon? Hench hood?? Name pending, who cares.
Danny is also suspiciously good at, well, his job. One of the best runners, even when he gets caught and frisked they never seem to find the goods on him (they never do check IN him, but then why would they) very well liked at every volunteer spot they have, patient, kind, funny, good with old people, kids, bitter people, addicts and the homeless, the sick and injured. And yet also very competent in the field, when they finally let him do actually dangerous things. Act as protection detail to the working girls in the red light district, he’s very respectful, and very good at intimidation, de-escalation, and when push comes to shove, excellent in a fight. Knows when to keep pressing his advantage and when to make a retreat with whoever he’s guarding. Not afraid to fight scrappy, and presses through pain and fear like a true gothmite.
He gets so good at his not really a job job that he becomes essentially, Redhoods right hand man.
The rest of the bats are skeptical of this for several reasons. Because generally speaking, the people in Jason’s turf are not fans of the bats, but Jason does a lot of coordinating with them, and someone so close to him is going to pick that up eventually if they’re half as sharp and useful as Danny is. Other than that, secret identity issues, plus pit rage, plus the fact that Jason trusts pretty much nobody. But Jason has great feelings about this guy, he always feels more clear headed and even keeled when he’s around, and he helps Jason remember the community he’s trying to build, and the community he serves. Also he delegates and mother hens like nobody’s business, but Jason just really can’t seem to work up too much irritation about it.
It is around this time, however, that the past, and shady government organizations come knocking.
Perhaps the GIW has also noticed how ecto-contaminated and lawless Gotham is and decided that they could start doing research and experiments with its live and undead denizens instead of amity, where the portal has closed, and ghost activity is down since phantom disappeared. Or maybe the GIW has finally located phantom specifically and is interested in what they’re always interested in. Or maybe it’s various ghosts harassing Danny to take up the throne, which he’s been avoiding successfully, but having settled into a life routine that suites him his core has finally ‘settled’ (halfa cores fluctuate more than other cores due to the transient nature of being alive, but halfa people settle into lifelong patterns and relationships quicker than other people because of the static nature of being dead) he is mature enough by ghost standards to assume the throne, or at least begin preparing for it.
Regardless, danny is being tracked down for his childhood baggage’s extended warranty, and brings the entirety of the JL and almost all associated sidekicks, hero group spin-offs, and organizations into the thick of it.
Idk. I just got through Secretary Danny by DeathlySilent13 on ao3 and I thought man oh man wouldn’t it be neat if Danny got to be Jason’s second in command instead??? That could open up a lot of avenues I haven’t seen yet. I’m also just very curious about how the Jason’s runs his gang according to the fandom, and I think that with all the ACAB energy Danny has been assigned, he should have a little bit of community focused organized crime. As a treat. Like I said I don’t go here thou, I just needed to put this somewhere and see if it vibed with anybody besides me

Behind the Fortress Walls Chapter 2
Chapter two of my fic for the @dpxdcbigbang has been released!
Fic Summary
Jazz is in love with Dick. He’s kind, considerate, and caring. Far and away the nicest person she’s ever dated. But she’s lying to him. About so, so much. And he’ll hate her once he learns the truth. Assuming he doesn't get tired of her canceling all their dates first. When Danny and Ellie go missing, the latest in a series of ghostly disappearances, she's forced to cancel another date. Going to Elmerton to meet up with Tucker and Sam, she will get Danny and Ellie back from the GIW no matter what it takes. Only…they aren't the only ones breaking in.
Chapter word count: ~6k. Full word count for both chapters 14141 which was totally unplanned. But what a fun number????
-----
“What’s taking so long, Pharaoh?” asked Jazz.
“I…don’t know. It looks like communications are down. I’m struggling to connect to the network here.”
Jazz stilled. “What does that mean?”
Tucker didn’t answer for a long minute as he continued to tap away at his tablet. “It means that even if we are seen breaking in, no one will be able to get an alarm raised off-base. Regrowth, have you seen any agents wandering around? Or lights turn on or off in the building?”
Sam jumped down from the tree. “I haven’t seen anyone.”
“I don’t like this,” said Jazz. “Something’s not right. There should be someone around. Growing up with my parents, I know all about experiments that drag on longer than expected. And the Guys in White are fanatics. They’d stay late to run another experiment.”
“Danny and Ellie are in there,” said Tucker.
Jazz closed her eyes. She hated unknowns. But Tucker was right. Danny and Ellie were in there.
“I’m going in anyway,” said Sam after a long moment. “If communications are down, they won’t be able to request back up.”
“Anyone we find is more likely to be on edge, though,” said Tucker.
Sam snorted. “And we can take them.”
“I have the zip ties I stole from my boyfriend,” said Jazz. “And a few things I’d taken from my parents before moving out. It’s all in working condition.”
“We go in,” agreed Tucker. “Maybe once we get to the security office, I’ll be able to figure out what’s going on.”
“Regrowth, you ready?” asked Jazz.
“Yep. Let’s go.”
All three made their way to the fence. A good six to ten feet of land on their side of the fence had been cleared, leaving them in plain view. But they had chosen an area of the fence that was in shadow where the light from two floodlights didn’t quite overlap.
They’d still be seen instantly if anyone decided to come looking, but hopefully the dark would be enough to protect them from a distance. Jazz and Sam shrugged off their backpacks and left them on the ground. Then Jazz, using skills she learned in Blüdhaven rather than Amity, took a running jump and latched onto the fence two feet off the ground.
Within seconds she was at the top of the fence.
“Show off,” she heard Sam mutter.
Jazz grinned to herself. She was, a little bit. Carefully, she spread her legs out wider while Sam climbed up under her. When she reached Jazz’s level, Jazz flattened herself against the fence so Sam could climb up behind her. With Jazz’s legs spread, Sam was able to get her knees under Jazz’s.
Then Sam gripped the fence tight, using muscles she had earned working in a gardening center carrying stone and clay pots bigger than her torso. Jazz used Sam’s lap as a pseudo seat and leaned back, letting go of the fence.
“You okay?” she asked, making sure her weight wasn’t going to overbalance Sam.
“Yep. Just be quick.”
Jazz nodded and reached into her robes where she had a wire cutter and thick gardening gloves courtesy of Sam. She pulled on the gloves and quickly cut off a foot and a half wide section of wire. With the gloves, she picked them up, keeping them from falling and hooked them into the links of the fence.
Stripping her gloves, she dropped them to the ground and grabbed back onto the fence.
Sam let out a breath of relief and climbed back down to the ground, Jazz following. Once on the ground, she grabbed the gloves she’d dropped and slid them back into their pocket in her robes.
“All right, Pharaoh,” said Jazz as she grabbed her backpack and put it back on. “You first.”

It was harder to pick a segment to share for this chapter! Hope you enjoy ^.^

Hey!! While waiting for the community to be reviewed... What are your thoughts on Danny's education? I wonder if this prick ever got an actual degree in journalism instead of finding a way to falsificate the whole thing somehow under the premise of being good enough for it anyway, tbh
Ooooh! Great question!
Well, honestly, I've been a bit back and forth about it--he's always given me major confidence trickster vibes, so the idea that he wouldn't....fluff up his credentials... seemed funny to me.
Prior to his tome release, I thought it would be interesting if he was more self-taught, especially since back in the day, it was a lot easier to get into journalism without strictly studying journalism. This isn't to say this is no longer the case, there ARE still situations where you can end up a journalist without going to journalism school... but generally the "best" way (if you have no network) is gonna be school. Anyways, his tome reveals he did take at least one anthropology related course in college, so I'm assuming he has at minimum a couple credits to his name. I like to think that he finished his degree, but the idea that he got wrapped up into the murdering and maybe didn't get to finish his degree is very fun too. Honestly picturing Danny at uni is such a trip because my general impression of colleges/universities is most of them tend to be very left/liberal-leaning and Danny's just a fucking centrist man... he's a bloody doomer getting into fights about how humanity is bad. He's literally the annoying guy in your seminars who takes the prof's entire attention and stalls the discussion just so he can have his own personal debate.
However, I like the idea that he didn't go to school strictly for journalism. I think part of the issue with his education is we don't know where it fell in relation to said patricide. It's not entirely unreasonable that his dad might have wanted Danny to get some university education and then enlist, it would look good in making him an officer, higher-ranking, stuff like that. If that's the case, Danny's credentials might be related to things that would be more useful to a theoretical future career in the military. For example, something like a BA in (military?) history with a minor in English. I'd honestly argue that his education is open season since his line of work as a journalist is one of those careers where as long as you can meet the technical skills required (writing, communication, research, etc.) it doesn't matter what you strictly studied since higher education at the university level generally already prepares you for that.
I have more thoughts so I might expand on this a bit later, but in the meantime I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this topic as well.

Seeking Humanity - Thundercracker
Thundercracker
"I'm no math expert, but I’ll do my best. Just like with any battle, it’s all about strategy... right?"
Faction: Decepticon
Function: Warrior
Profile:
Once a notable warrior in the Decepticon ranks, Thundercracker has found himself in uncharted territory as a human living under the same roof as Cindy and her family. The transformation from a powerful Cybertronian to a vulnerable human marks a profound shift in his identity, forcing him to confront his values. He wrestles with the remnants of his past, the instinctual loyalty to the Decepticons, and his budding emotions towards humanity. While he relishes in moments of caring and tenderness, particularly towards Cindy, he grapples with insecurities about his capabilities in this new life. The weight of his past mistakes surfaces in moments of doubt, making him a more relatable character who seeks to protect those he has come to care for, even if it conflicts with his former Decepticon allegiance.
Abilities:
Tactical Insight:
With a background in military strategy, Thundercracker excels at evaluating situations quickly and efficiently. He can assess the dynamics of a conflict or problem, allowing him to propose creative solutions. When helping Danny with homework, he draws parallels between math strategies and military maneuvers, making learning fun and practical.
Empathetic Communication:
Thundercracker possesses a natural ability to sense human emotions, allowing him to connect with Cindy, Danny, and others on a deeper level. His genuine concern and willingness to listen help create a comforting atmosphere, allowing those around him to feel safe and understood.
Combat Training:
Despite embracing a gentler lifestyle, Thundercracker retains skills from his days as a warrior. He remains proficient in physical defense techniques, which can come into play during unexpected confrontations. He can protect Cindy and Danny, often utilizing improvised tactics that are both effective and surprisingly humorous.
Supportive Mentor:
His nurturing personality allows him to take on a mentor-like role for Danny. Thundercracker encourages creativity, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence, offering life lessons that he himself is learning along the journey.
Artistic Flair:
Inspired by Cindy’s writing and artistic endeavors, Thundercracker delves into creative pursuits himself, trying his hand at poetry, painting, or music. This newly discovered talent serves as an emotional outlet, leading to comedic and poignant moments that bind him closer to Cindy.
Weaknesses:
Inner Turmoil:
The clash between his old allegiance to the Decepticons and his new life creates significant internal conflict. Thundercracker's fears of betrayal by his past and doubts about embracing new relationships can inhibit his ability to fully commit to human emotions or assert himself in critical situations, causing hesitance when important decisions arise.
Lack of Assertiveness:
Thundercracker struggles to stand up to stronger personalities, like Starscream and Thrust, especially when tensions run high. His reluctance to confront them about their behavior regarding Cindy leads to more profound conflicts, often leaving him feeling powerless and defeated.
Over-Protectiveness:
Thundercracker’s instinct to protect those he cares about leads him to overreact in certain situations, particularly with Cindy and Danny. This protective nature, while well-intentioned, can inadvertently agitate others, creating friction within the household.
Confusion About Identity:
The transition to humanity leaves Thundercracker feeling lost and grappling with questions about his identity. He often bounces between wanting to embrace his new reality and longing for the sense of purpose that comes with being a warrior, leading to moments of existential crisis.
Awkward Social Dynamics:
His inability to fully grasp human social cues results in awkward and humorous misunderstandings during interactions with Cindy and her friends. These humorous blunders often serve to reinforce his outsider status, which he struggles with internally, creating both comedic relief and moments of self-reflection.

Headcannons that carry over to almost every if not every DP au I think of (most if not all of them are DP/DC aus)
Danny and Jazz took dance classes when they were little, and Danny was always a dance prodigy. He can dance flawlessly on pointe and can do any style, though Danny and Jazz's main focus was ballet when they took dance classes. They still know a lot about most dance styles.
Danny and Jazz also took figure skating lessons growing up, but only in winter. They both still practice every time they go ice skating.
Danny is trans.
Danny and Paulina are dance partners (or were dance partners before Danny left Amity Park)
Paulina has dragon powers because of the incident with Dorothea's necklace.
Sam has dragon powers because of that incident as well, but hers are weaker due to less exposure.
Sam also has plant powers because of the thing that happened with Undergrowth.
Paulina and Sam both have dragon instincts because of their dragon powers. This means they are both VERY protective.
Ghost hearing is on the same level as kryptonian hearing. When Danny first became a halfa, everything was too loud for him to understand and sounded like white noise. Danny, Sam, and Tucker all started learning sign language shortly after the accident because of this. If Jazz didn't already know sign language, she quickly noticed that Danny wasn't understanding anything he was hearing and started learning sign language as well.
Ghost speech is not a language. It is a power that allows ghosts to understand and speak any and every language fluently, whether they've heard it before or not. But it's like learning every language with the time and effort it takes to learn 1. The power still needs to be practiced for ghosts to use it well. It's a skill.
Danny knew a few languages even before he died, so it was easier for him to learn ghost speech than it was for other ghosts who have that power.
Dani goes by Ellie because it didn't feel like she had her own name when she went by Dani.
Danny and Ellie both have fangs.
Danny and Ellie need more iron in their diets than any human.
Danny is 4 feet tall and will stay that height forever.
Ellie is at least 6 feet tall when fully grown because her growth wasn't stunted like Danny's.
Jazz is TALL
Danny is touch starved af but REFUSES to ask for affection.
Jazz is touch starved too, but not nearly as much as Danny, and her communication about wanting affection is slightly better than Danny's.
Danny gave Ellie a stuffed raccoon shortly after they met. Ellie named it Travis.
Ellie refuses to say the word "raccoon." They are Trash Pandas and that is what she calls them.
Danny has a giant panda plush that was given to him by 1 or both of his sisters.
Jazz has a stuffed red panda that Danny and Ellie worked together to get for her.
Danny is bisexual.
Sam is a lesbian.
Jazz is either a lesbian, bi with a preference for women, or aroace. (Lesbian in most of the aus I think of.)
John Constantine is Danny and Jazz's pseudo uncle, "Uncle JC," who they weren't allowed to see or talk to anymore after he got into a fight with Jack and Maddie about ghosts when Danny was 12. (This 1 is more specific to dp/dc, but most, if not all, of the dp aus I think of are dp/dc.)
I don't talk about these enough, but these are the headcannons going through my head with every, or almost every, story idea I come up with. I think I've mentioned all of these on discord at some point. I don't post all the story ideas I come up with, but many float in and out of my head and repeatedly come back. Sometimes, a possible story idea will be floating around in my head for weeks, and I won't write anything down or talk about it or post about it, and then eventually I either send it to the discord server to talk about, or post it on tumblr. Usually discord. But I only talk about the ones that I can put into clear enough words to talk about them.

Have Matt and Danny Rand ever bounded around having really hard martial arts masters training them?
Great question! And the answer is, not really-- at least, not on-panel, as far as I can remember. Marvel's superhero community (and Danny’s inner circle in particular) is filled with skilled fighters, so that's certainly not an experience that's unique to the two of them, and to be a martial artist with that degree of ability, the training has to be "really hard"-- it's not like Stick and Lei Kung were doing anything strange or gratuitous in their teaching. Lei Kung was strict, yes-- as war master of one of the Capital Cities of Heaven, he had to be-- but he was also a loving father figure to Danny; and Stick and Matt had their own deep, affectionate, if complicated bond. And of course, Danny's training was on an entirely different level than Matt's, so it's a bit of an apples-and-oranges situation. What we do know is that Danny and Matt respect each other very much, both in combat and in life, and part of that comes from respecting each other's history and training.
That said-- and this isn't what you asked, but it's something I love, so I'm gonna geek out about it-- there are some fun connections between their legacies. To start, Master Izo (Stick’s mentor and founder of the Chaste) is in the Book of the Iron Fist!
Tumblr media
[ID: Excerpt from Brubaker’s Daredevil run. A bunch of characters (Matt Murdock, Danny Rand, Dakota North, Carlos LaMuerto, and Master Izo) are standing around in Matt’s kitchen in civvies. Izo is in the background, drinking from a container.]
Danny: "Uh, Dakota? Who's the old guy drinking the grain alcohol?"
Dakota: "Says his name is Master Izo."
Danny: "Master Izo? Really?"
Matt: "Wait-- you've heard of him?"
Danny: "Yes... he was mentioned in the Book of the Iron Fist... a few hundred years ago..."
Daredevil vol. 2 #113 by Ed Brubaker, Michael Lark, Stefano Gaudiano, and Matt Hollingsworth
You may know this, and I've talked about this scene before, but it's been a while and I'm always in a mood to ramble about my guy Izo and the Iron Fist mythos. If anyone is unfamiliar, you should follow my IF blog! the Book of the Iron Fist is a written chronicle of the lives and deeds of the Iron Fists, extending back through the centuries. There is no direct link between K'un-Lun/the Iron Fist legacy and the Hand/Chaste lineage to which Matt (and Izo and Stick and Elektra and Maki Matsumoto and Sam Chung, etc.) are connected. They're completely separate worlds. But this fun fact of Izo bumping into an Iron Fist at some point in his long, chaotic life is something I cherish. This interaction is followed by a wonderful scene of bonding-- not between Danny and Matt, but between Danny and Izo, over Matt (which I discussed in some detail here).
There's also this odd little moment from Bendis' Defenders run:
Tumblr media
[ID: Excerpt from Bendis’ Defenders run, showing Matt and Danny standing together in a dark alley. Matt is in his Daredevil costume with the mask off, and Danny is in the full Iron Fist costume.]
Matt: "I am blind."
[ID: Danny puts up a hand for a high-five.]
Danny: "Oh! Dude, that is awesome. There was this street-fighter named Stick who was blind."
Matt: "He was my sensei."
Defenders (2017) #8 by Brian Michael Bendis, David Marquez, and Justin Ponsor
There are all kinds of little continuity weirdnesses in this series, so this could just be among them, but it is an extremely cool idea, and does make sense timeline-wise. While we know pretty much nothing about Stick’s early life (get on that, Marvel!), we do know that he spent probably quite a long time training at the Chaste’s secret mountaintop headquarters, and then at some point later wound up in New York, where he eventually met young/teenage Matt. He seemingly stayed in New York after their falling-out when Matt was in college (based on Man Without Fear continuity, which is the only continuity we have for this plot detail), gambling and fighting and doing all the things he complained about Izo doing back in the day. When Matt searches for him many years later for help with a hypersensory issue (in Daredevil vol. 1 #176), Stick is still hanging out in the city. During that gap in Matt and Stick’s relationship, Danny Rand returned to Earth and settled into his new life in Manhattan. And in both his own life and his eventual Heroes for Hire work, he was spending a lot of time in the same kinds of unsavory places that Stick seemed to be frequenting, interacting with a lot of the same kinds of well-connected, low-level people in the criminal underworld who would know Stick-- and so it is likely that Danny would at least have heard of him, if not run into him. (In fact, “mysterious weirdos who can kick everyone’s butts” is Danny’s exact area of interest.) This might have just been a throwaway gag for Bendis, but I’m begging someone-- anyone-- to write me this flashback issue. Please. That is an interaction I’m dying to see.
I’m sorry this went a bit off-topic, but I hope it was interesting anyway. I know I had fun. Thanks for your great question!

Im assuming the three are the trio? Valerie gets added last minute, and dani (from the waynes perspective) appeared out of nowhere and girlbossed anyone who questioned it. If jazz is going to gotham u, she also temporarily moves into the manor while the team is in gotham. Im just imagining the fentons/team phantom behaving like invasive species. Bruce invited a few of them, so the rest aren't far behind. They're a package deal.
I like good fenton parents, so they and some of danny's friendlier rogues are holding down the fort while team phantom is away.
Danny instantly clocks bruce and damian as the foreign visiters and immediately investigates. His experience with fruitloop billionaires has him going down to find the batcave. He hasnt been in the manor longer than five minutes and has already figured out everyones identities.
He doesnt keep secrets from his team either. Qualms about outing another hero? No. His team works together as a single unit. Communication was a hard won lesson as they fought for their (after)lives. (Literally the only time they keep secrets is if sharing intel threatens the stability of the timeline, which requires proof in the form of a clockwork sticky note demanding them to not tell.) If his team is staying in batmans home, they have a right to know.
Listen, if batman and robin witnessed them facing The Horrors(tm) like an everyday chore, then team phantom deserves to be a well-oiled butt-kicking machine.
I'd imagine bruce's motives for arranging a student exchange program and inviting the trio to stay with him was to analyze them more closely, possibly train up some of their weak points, and flesh out more thorough contigencies. But i think it'd be really funny if he just *continues* to be one step behind them the whole way.
He orchestrates a scenario where he "discovers" one of them has powers to get an opening to talk about it?
Bruce: so you have powers?
Danny: wasnt exactly hiding it.
Bruce: i dont know how things are where youre from (absolute lie), but here in gotham, flaunting powers is dangerous. It could make you a target.
Danny: more dangerous than inviting a team of unknown meta-adjacents to live in your home right on top of your secret lair slash vigilante hq?
Bruce offers to train them?
Danny and jazz: our mom's a ninth degree black belt and both of our parents are inventors and expert weapons handlers. We learned martial arts, modern weapons handling and how to pilot over fifty different types of vehicles just from them.
Valerie: i joined the team already as a ninth degree black belt.
Danny and ellie: we have multiple mentors in the realms that have helped us master each of our powers, and trained us in fighting handicapped with restricted powersets and limited or no access to powers.
Tucker: i hacked into the batcomputer in less than five minutes without even using any technopathy.
Sam: AND we've all trained under Lady Pandora with dozens of different types of traditional and historical weapons. I'm pretty sure that makes us all honorary amazons.
Bruce wants to see how well they work as a team and partnered up with various bats to gauge their skill sets?
Ellie with damian: Ellie is better at disarming damian than any of the bats. How so? She goads him into attacking, deliberately lets him successfully land a hit, and absorbs the weapon into her body. Bruce tried to prevent it, but damian eventually snapped and full body tackled her, not holding back. Somehow, neither got worse than bruises and ellie declared damian her new best friend. Damian has changed loyalties.
Tucker, Tim, and Barbara: tim and barbie started out trying to guage tucker's level of ability. They started a hackathon that lasted a whole weekend, nobody slept, and nearly every socialite in gotham connected to the court of owls was arrested for some exposed crime or another.
Jazz: everyone she gets paired with ends up bawling their eyes out, beelining straight to bruce to give him a hug and insist that he needs to spend some one-on-one with her as well. Jason straight up proposed to Jazz and declared that he'll change his name to Fenton. Somehow, he now has ghost powers. Both insist that they had absolutely nothing to do with the joker's severed remains washing up in gotham harbor two weeks later, which might actually be true as all of jazz's free time is currently being spent adopting talons.
Danny, Cass, and Stephanie: Bruce is very certain that he'll be cleaning glitter out of the cave until the end of time.
Valerie and duke: they seem perfectly behaved, but bruce just knows their hiding something. He knows it deep in his bones. (Plot twist: valerie killed the joker.)
Sam and dick: dick introduced sam to harley and ivy. Sam has disowned her parents and declared ivy to be her adopted mom. Nobody else in team phantom is surprised by this turn of events and have advised bruce to 'just let her get the pent up aggression out of her system. She's earned it."
Bruce sitting at the batcomputer staring at the empty file called "team phantom contingencies" with soul crushing despair?
Danny: here's my contingency file. All plans are categorized by how physically painful they would be, how temporary or permanent the measures would last, and what kind of long term consequences each would have.
DP x DC Prompt: The Watchlist
Batman has a watchlist. A list that contains every individual who could become a rouge and a contingency plan for if they did.
And while they, his children, often make fun of his paranoia and him for having it, they totally understand why he did. They lived in Gotham, for Christ's sake. Where everyone’s just a pin drop away from being the city’s next big villain, forcing the bats to scratch their heads while playing cat and mouse with a sicko for a good few weeks. And while they won’t admit it, the list has helped them a few times.
But that won’t stop them from making fun of any of the list’s new developments. Because you see, there was a new list. And it wasn’t just a watchlist. No, no, no. It was The Watchlist.
It was a new development after he and Robin went on an out-of-state mission to investigate some town in bum fuck nowhere Illinois. And it was under some pretty tight security as well, so they were expecting something good, like mad scientists or evil mayors. Not profiles of the kids who lived in the town. And while there were a few metas and vigilantes that made the list interesting, by the end of it all they just seemed to be teenagers.
Until they saw Damian. They hadn’t seen him since he came back from the mission with B. He looked tired. Like ‘Tim hasn’t slept in a week and is surviving on just coffee beans’ tired.
“Ah, I see you all have found it. Good. A few of them will be arriving next week as they’re a part of Gotham Academy’s student exchange program. At least three of them will be staying in the manor with us. Father will need you all to be on standby and to be ready for any possible scenario. Please, for the love of all that is good, do not encourage them in any way, shape, or form. And please do not dismiss them either. The outcome of doing that will be much worse. Is there more that I should add? Yes. Will I? No, because you won’t understand. Not until you've seen what I have.”
The demon child sighed, then looked them dead in the eyes. “Godspeed to us all.” Then walked away.
Okay, they were scared now.

it's a zombie apocalypse! what do your sims do? D:
omg this one is fun because i actually have a whole apocalypse AU that lives in my brain, so like... this is canon :’) so i’m putting it under the cut because hey someday i might actually post this as a mini sim story, in case you don’t want to get spoiled! (and because it’s LONG)
asa: got bit immediately, but he's obviously immune because he's the special main character. he’s really good at foraging & living among the elements.
finn: full-on mountain man. as soon as the world started going to shit he packed up his supplies, went out into the woods, and has been living off hunting and fishing ever since. he’s the first one to kill a human being, in self defense.
stevie: she has a fair amount of wilderness knowledge, but most of her value comes from her ability to connect with people on a human level. even after she’s separated from everyone she’s ever known, she’s able to worm her way into new communities.
jada: dies within the first 6 months – she’s distrustful of others and tries to stay alive all on her own, without enough outdoorsy skills to back her up.
elaine: dies immediately – while escaping the city, she was grabbed through the window of the car and bitten.
casper: dies immediately – from overestimating his ability to physically take down a zombie.
caroline: is driven by the need to reunite with asa. she’ll do absolutely anything that it takes to find him again, even if it takes her down a dark path.
beth: gets shot by accident on the day of the outbreak, but manages to heal up. she and cara join an underground community that hopes to restore civilization back to what it once was.
danny: is distraught and basically useless because casper is dead and asa is presumed dead and he thinks he can’t protect mikaela or sadie either.
mikaela: so in this AU she’s actually 5 months pregnant with sadie at the time of the outbreak, which is both a hinderance and a benefit, because people are more likely to trust a pregnant woman. also, with her being a nurse, she’s a great asset to any group. but she’s traumatized by casper’s death.

Not a drabble request but more your thoughts on this??
You dont have to answer but we see alot of my hero and bnha crossovers where Danny and co get quirks or saying how OP Danny would be compared to quirks. What do u think about the mha kids being ghosts in Danny's universe instead? Their cores/obsessions?
I may have thought way too much about it and really wanna see other ppls thought XD
Ooooh this sounds like fun. it's gonna be long so buckle up.
Midoriya
I think Deku would have an obsession similar to Danny's (if we're going the protection route ,of course). I don't think he'd have OfA, though. Because he was born quirkless he'd just have generic ghost powers, but he becomes really powerful because he trains as hard as he can help as many people as he can. If he did have a specific ghost power given after death, I think it would be something along the lines of honing his analyzing skills or maybe something to do with probability. Either way, he and Danny would get along really well.
Uraraka
I think Uraraka would be in more or less the same boat as Midoriya in terms of powers, but she relies a lot more heavily on her telekinesis than any other power, whereas Midoriya probably uses all of his equally. I think both of them would have normal cores, but Uraraka's obsession would be different. Her motivations for becoming a hero in the show are due to her own poverty, so I feel like she would help if she gets something out of it, or on the opposite of that spectrum, she does everything in her power to give to the community, like a cute dead Robin Hood.
Iida
I love this man with my whole heart. His motivations align more with Midoriya's. He genuinely does want to help people, but for him it's more of a "My whole family did this and I've seen all the help they've done" kind of thing versus coming from a place where he never had the tools to be able to go down that road. His family has always prided themselves on being fast, so of course I think he'd keep his usual power (maybe adjusted for being dead) paired with maybe an air core just so he can boost his speed even more since that's what he relies on the most in combat.
Todoroki
Todoroki is so obsessed with denouncing his father, I don't think he would have a shred of heat powers like in the show. I think he would have an ice core like Danny, and I like to imagine him living peacefully among the yetis in the Far Frozen. He genuinely wants to become a hero, but I feel like it's more out of spite than anything, especially when it concerns Endeavor. I think in a different environment he would thrive even more, and while he still wants to help people, I think it would be channeled a bit differently. I think he would be a fine healer in the Far Frozen.
Sue
I think it would be fun to see Sue's frog powers paired with ghost powers but in universe I don't think that's what her powers would be. She's a very level headed character, always able to stay calm in the worst situations and in turn she kinda helps calm everyone around her. I think if she had anything past generic ghost powers, it would be the power to push her aura out, and calm everyone down. Or maybe it would be to give the power of rational thinking, something Danny sorely needs. I think they would be a nice pair in this setting, and she's probably the one Danny would work with the most.
Bakugou
Bakugou has an explosive personality and I don't think it would be fair to take that away from him, especially in death. His obsession will be what it was in the show-to be Number One. He and Danny end up butting heads a lot because of this, just because Danny wants to help people, and Bakugou's need for competition and winning gets in the way sometimes. Though when everybody is laying down on the wire, Bakugou is right there with them. He's gonna help them as much as he can. While he's stubborn he's also incredibly smart, and will want to contribute in any way he can, whether it be through fighting or strategizing. I think he would obviously had a fire quirk, and he avoids the Far Frozen-and more obviously Todoroki-at all costs.
Kirishima
Baby boy, man after my own heart Kirishima would have a rock core and an obsession as a people pleaser.
But honestly, I think his obsession would be just wanting to do better. That's what he strives for in the show, because he doesn't want to fall behind his peers, as well as the one time he didn't and a giant guy went to his classmates instead. Whether he was threatening or not, he stood there and did nothing, and never want to do nothing again. So he tries to be the best him he can be, through rigorous training and shark merchandise. Because he's a melee fighter, I feel like he would get along really well with Valerie (after she comes around, of course). They would trade training techniques and Pokemon cards.
Kaminari
I love my dumb himbo bisexual with my whole fucking being. He of course would have a lightning quirk, but I don't think he'd get along with anybody we've met that also has that power (i.e. Vortex). He has his usual limit in terms of power, but since he's already dead his frying brain doesn't really effect much. He's there to lend a helping hand wherever he's needed, and he always wants to be there for his friends. I think paired with Danny or Tucker or both, they would make The Worst Decisions anybody's ever seen. They are the definition of Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest, and Sam definitely has the braincell for the day.
Sero
I like to think that in this universe Sero has an obsession with Spider-Man, and so his powers translate through that. Though instead of tape, I think he would swing around on like an elastic type of ectoplasm. I also think it would be cool to see him be able to change the elasticity and see what ways he could use that. But mostly he's just here for a good time, and he's out there swinging around with his friends. I love this man with my whole heart.
Mina
My muse, my babe, my number one in this show. I think her obsession would be more tied with her interests rather than he actual powers in mha. I think she would find a fun way to incorporate her dancing into her fighting like she does in the show, but instead of acid maybe it's just ectoplasm. I don't know but either way she's having a great time. She consistently has sleepovers with others in the Zone like Ember, Kitty, and Dora, and forces self care down their throats.
Momo
Momo is definitely in the rich part of the Zone, and she helps out because she likes helping, not because she has some weird obsession with being good like Deku or Bakugou. She loves meeting new people, and she's the queen of networking within the Zone. She has a normal core, and generic ghost powers. She can't make things like her normal powers, but I think ectoplasm manipulation to make things like she does in the show would be cool, like being able to harden specific shapes or shoot ectoplasm out of more ectoplasm (like a canon?). Also she's best friends with Tucker.
Jirou
Jirou still has her powers, but she spends more time starting a band and making a Battle of the Bands event. It's the first one in the Zone and the only two bands are hers and Ember's. They become really close, but not Close (that's Momo's spot, who made t-shirts for everybody). Normal core, but same powers, and with ghostly things added, it might even be warped and she might be able to use a sonic attack like Danny's wail, but with her leg speakers.
Tokoyami
Tokoyami would have a shadow core, and he would be the only ghost with a shadow core. He's beautiful in every way and he deserves his own special core. I am not taking criticism. He can manipulate shadows, and his bet bird (Dark Shadow) followed him into death, and just hangs out with him all day. Kind of like Johnny's shadow but cooler and funnier. He takes a lot of pride in scaring Danny, and cherishes the friendship he's cultivated with Sam because they're both Goth.
Aoyama
Aoyama just wants to be the center of attention. Instead of his naval laser he's got something either glitter related or fireworks related (or a mix of both). His lair is a big musical stage with a spotlight that is only ever on him. He hosts a one-man play once a week, and makes flyers for everybody, and they're supportive so they come. He's a shining star and he's very happy to share it with the entire Zone and then some. And with his ghost powers, it's definitely turned up to 11.
Shoji
Shoji is so worried about being scary to other people that the mask is a permanent figure in his ghost form. I think it would be fun for him to still have all of his limbs, but I also think it would be cool to take it a step further-anything he touches he can duplicate. You only have one cake and there's two dozen of us? Bam, five cakes. I feel like he would get into lots of trouble if paired with Danny, but not enough to be like, a criminal. He's kinda in the same standing as Momo in terms of money duplication and things similar to that.
Sato
Sato's obsession is obviously cooking, and he really enjoys Danny's help because when it comes to eating, Danny is a black hole. His ghost powers take up a lot of energy that he's just constantly burning through, so it's a win-win relationship. Sato gets a taste tester, and Danny gets free food. he can use his powers like in mha, but he spends most of his time in the kitchen just making birthday cakes for the yetis in the Far Frozen.
Ojiro
Ojiro is the Normal Hero for a reason, but that's not a bad thing. in fact, I think he takes a lot of pride in that. Instead of a tail I think he would be able to bend his body in any way shape or form (Like Plastic Man or Mr. Fantastic), on top of his normal ghost powers, making him a pretty creative fighter in the Zone. He and Danny have fun training with each other.
Hagakure
Hagakure's power won't be invisibility. She spends a lot of her time just trying to be seen because of her quirk. I think her power would be something like light refraction/manipulation, or something just generally bright. She wants to be seen and I think as a ghost that would translate in her powers. She would have a normal core or a fire core depending on how her powers manifest in death.
Kouda
Kouda's just here for a good time. He can still talk to animals, and tries to avoid the Messiness from Midoriya and Bakugou, and Danny's occasional mishap. Though he's a great listener. He does become really good friends with Cujo, and Danny gets a little bit jealous at first until Kouda tells him that the only thing Cujo talks about is how much he loves Danny. Danny does in fact Not Cry, he's just allergic to feelings. The one member of Danny's team he gets along with incredibly well is Valerie, because she's the only one who knows how to slow down and just enjoy the moment.
Shinso
Shinso is 100% keeping his brainwashing powers, solely so he can mess with people. At first he and Danny don't really get along because Danny doesn't have Boundaries and that really made Shinso uncomfortable so their relationship was the definition of thin ice, but eventually they warmed up enough to become good friends. in fact, I think Danny and Shinso would get along the most because other than Deku, he's probably the only one who could really understand Shinso (being powerless, and then when you have power you're seen as a villain despite your actions constantly proving otherwise). Shinso is a cat person through and through but because of Danny, the only dog he will ever interact with is Cujo.

A Mother’s Intuition
AO3
Maddie Fenton prides herself on being a woman of science. A woman full of reasoning and logic who has spent her entire career working on showing her credibility by proving that ghosts exist; not only that, but to show the dangers that they hold to the living. After so many years of being mocked and belittled she finally got her big break with that ghost portal. Once ghosts started coming into Amity Park, she knew she had something tangible that would shake the foundations of the scientific community that have been perceived as Law. Everyone would know that there exists a space that these laws don’t apply (in more ways than one). She and Jack would finally get their brilliance recognized, and her children could finally look at their parents with pride knowing that they’re the first to discover and pioneer this new branch of science never before studied by mankind.
With that being said, Maddie was the one who always brought a more realistic approach to the ideas Jack came up with. They made a good team like that, covering each other’s blind spots to the best of their abilities. Maddie was seen as the rational one, less emotionally swayed compared to her jovial and at times overly enthusiastic husband. That’s not a bad thing really, since it keeps Maddie grounded in not becoming too absorbed in observing at a microscopic level and he forces her to step back and relook at her project with new eyes with a wider perspective. This is all to say that Maddie is an observant person. Her profession relies on her ability to analyze and being able to report and reflect on those observations.
All this needs to be mentioned because Maddie has been feeling strange lately. Well, perhaps lately isn’t the right word. This is a feeling that has existed within her for awhile, it’s just become impossible to ignore the longer it stays. This is a blind spot that has grown too large to push aside.
Dread is one way to describe this feeling. Anxiety is another. At its worst peak, paranoia might be more applicable.
Right now Maddie is sitting at her dinner table with her family. It’s a Sunday night, she had ordered pizza earlier in the evening because the radioactive hot dogs are holding yesterday’s leftovers hostage. It’s a normal evening for the Fentons all things considered.
Except for the slightly shaky hands, which is strange for a woman who has skilled precision with a scalpel. Except for the pounding in Maddie’s chest, her pulse has been quickening the longer they’re having dinner, and she’s starting to hear that same pulse pounding behind her ears. Except for the slight chill that never leaves her despite sitting next to her husband who runs so warm he might as well be a personal heater.
There’s the tightening of her chest that leaves her struggling to breathe properly. It feels as if at any moment she may have to start gasping for breath like her sister Alicia used to as a kid before she got an inhaler to treat her asthma.
Ultimately, these are all the signs Maddie feels when she’s scared. It’s been a while since she’s felt true fear that wasn’t outweighed by adrenaline and excitement. She usually can hold her own against any human and she’s smart to never fight a ghost at close range. She can’t remember the last time she had felt helpless enough to fear like this.
As a woman who is a master at martial arts, she’s had a lot of past experience in her training going up against powerful opponents. There were certain opponents (especially in her early years of training) that made her feel like she was prey, that if she lost her focus for a moment, she would be pulverized. This is the same feeling only a thousand times worse.
Maddie has been trying to deny the connections she’s been weaving since the first prick of nervousness first reached her. She was a woman of science, she needed evidence to support her conclusion; correlation does not equal causation. However, her martial arts background has told her to trust your instincts; it’s a survival trait warning of a potential danger. The conflict of these two perspectives have been arguing in her head about the odd common thread with these spikes of anxiety.
These feelings only seem to appear whenever Danny was around.
It was such a silly observation at first, more of an offhand thought. But as time went on, and her nerves were worsening, the thought stayed with her in the back of her mind.
Maddie’s mind tries to be rational about the ordeal, trying to convince herself that these feelings of anxiety could be due to stress, or some effect of the ghost portal. The fact that something primal is screaming at her that her son –the boy who currently has a piece of pepperoni stuck to the side of his lip and is pouting at Jazz—is a threat to her livelihood is what worries her.
Could he be possessed by a ghost? No, that’s ridiculous; his eyes are blue, he can’t be possessed. They look a little brighter than normal. That’s the kitchen lighting, Danny is NOT involved in this.
It feels like it has to be ghost related. This feeling of dread is common with several of the ghosts that have appeared in Amity Park before. She’s noticed that the more powerful ones are more likely to cause this instinctual feeling compared to the little ghost blobs who only cause a shiver to your spine once physical contact is made.
“—right Mom?”, Maddie jumps a bit and looks up to realize that Jazz was looking directly at her. She notices that the pizza box is empty, and the table’s been cleared, except for her own plate. Was she out of it for that long?
“Sorry honey, I didn’t hear what you said. Could you repeat the question?”. She tried to offer a smile, but she could tell looked more like a grimace. Jack was looking at her worriedly, but he knew better than to push her to talk in front of the kids. Jazz looked back with a soft smile, but her brows were furrowed.
Maddie didn’t look in Danny’s direction.
“I was just saying I should have the leftover slice of pizza for tomorrow instead of Danny because I have seniority rights, right?”
Maddie blinked at Jazz for a moment before recollecting herself and standing up from her seat and moving to the sink to wash the dishes, forcefully ignoring the back of her mind screaming at her to run as far away as she can from here and never look back.
“Now you two, there’s no need to fight like that. Why don’t I just give you both some lunch money for tomorrow and we’ll call it even?” She smiled at Jazz, subtly angling herself so her back wasn’t facing towards Danny and kept him in her peripheral vision.
She doesn’t want to think of why she did that.
--
Later that night, Maddie couldn’t sleep. She managed to convince Jack that she was feeling better after dinner, and now she’s wide awake trying to remember why that fear felt so familiar. She recognized the unease that only comes from being in close contact with a ghost. It’s the same feeling that lingered in her system after having a ghost possess her; there’s a specific rolling in her stomach that comes from it. The feelings she got during dinner tonight felt like a specific ghost, something about it felt familiar but she couldn’t put her finger on it.
When she finally went to sleep, she was restless with dreams of sharp bright blue eyes, looming shadows that suffocated her, and sweet awkward smiles that slowly turned into menacing and haunting grins.
--
The rest of the week had been a pretty regular one. Jack and Maddie had spent most of the week building some new weapons that could help capture Phantom once and for all. Because of this, they had been eating in their lab. If Maddie felt relief at using her work as a shield to avoid family dinner, that’s her secret to keep.
The week had been quiet with no battles or major ghost sightings until a massive ghost battle broke out between Phantom and another one of the reoccurring ghosts on Friday. Skulker was the name of the ghost if what she had overheard from her sonar dish on the family RV was correct. It was all the way across town. Jack was behind the wheel, and Maddie was checking over the new prototype they had been working on all week that would hopefully weaken a ghost’s powers. They were hoping that Phantom could be their first test subject.
As they were about halfway to the battle, Maddie suddenly got a prickly feeling in her neck. She was well acquainted with that feeling when nearing ghosts, so she dismissed it as usual. But it got worse the closer they reached their destination. Her body slowly began to tense up, more, her breaths were becoming shallower, and her mouth had suddenly run very dry.
No… it can’t be…
There they were in front of Skulker and Phantom and all Maddie could do was tense up in terror and barely stop herself from letting out a whimper. This feels too familiar, he feels like…
Phantom suddenly crashes on top of their windshield, he groans and begins to lift himself off the hood of the RV when for a brief moment, his eyes meet Maddie’s. He sends a sheepish smile and begins to fly up towards Skulker, immediately striking him down with an ectoblast.
Meanwhile, Maddie feels all the blood drain from her face and she feels her eyes begin to fill up with tears. Jack is yelling about that darn ghost damaging his RV, but she can barely focus. She recognized the feeling now. The interaction between the two of them didn’t even last a minute, yet it is staying with her all the same.
The smile Phantom gave reminded her of a black-haired boy who would get caught staying up late looking at his telescope. A boy who would give her that same smile whenever he was confronted about skipping class and missing his assignments. She sees that smile every day in her own home.
It looked so odd, having that smile come from a boy with bright white hair, and eyes that glowed toxic green. The smile was sharper, with incisors that were just short of becoming fangs. But it was still recognizable.
She can no longer deny it, Phantom and Danny are connected. Danny even leaves her with the same sense of terror and fear that only a ghost as powerful as Phantom could do. It feels more potent with Phantom; looking him in the eye for that moment almost made her scream bloody murder.
Jack was never as attuned to the emotional effects that ghosts brought on due to his natural bravery and confidence (she has a theory about his family bloodline having adopted some traits that could block out these senses of fear which leads them to being better ghost hunters). However, even Jack had once mentioned that he felt unnerved by Phantom, which says a lot about the power that child ghost must hold. But to think that powerful monster is somehow connected to her son was a situation she never would have considered. Was he possessed?
When did it happen? Was it around the time that Maddie first began feeling unnerved?
How didn’t you notice? The back of her mind whispered to her. You’re his mother, aren’t you?
The weight of her realization begins to set it. The burden of fearing her son with no tangible reason for doing so. Her own neglect and obliviousness about missing this massive part of her son’s life fills her with guilt. Suddenly the weapon in her hand, ready to be used against Phantom (Danny?) makes her nauseous.
She feels her body beginning to shut down and go into autopilot. Maddie dazedly notices that she and her husband are parked in the middle of a street, in easy range to get blasted or crushed, or incinerated or possessed by these ghosts. She is in no condition to fight.
She feels a little hysterical thinking about her own safety when her son (or some possessed version of him) is out there fighting a ghost after literally crashing into an RV with military grade protection.
“Jack, we should go home”, Maddie hoarsely interrupts her husband’s tangent.
He looks like he was about to protest until he saw his wife’s bloodshot eyes, holding back tears and white as a sheet. Without further prompting, he turned the car around and as soon as the stiffening fear had melted away from Maddie’s shoulders did she finally allow the tears to fall.

Danny discretely scrambles to become a licensed massage therapist before anyone looks too closely because one of Batman's affiliates has now been made aware of his existence.  Apparently there are proper terms for things?  Shit, has he already blown his cover by not knowing the vocabulary?  (He has not.  Nightwing is not an expert on massage and didn't even bother to question his credentials between Jason having already deemed him legit and the results speaking for themselves.)
On another note, Danny learns a lot while speedrunning the training/certification process.  (Did he go overboard and learn physical therapy too? Maybe.)  Combining actual knowledge with his natural talent and whatever elements of his ghost powers are relevant brings his skills up to god-mode level.
What's that, slightly liminal dude from the Red Hood gang?  You haven't been quite right after an injury even though it healed up fine and shouldn't be giving you trouble?  Well let's take a look.  Ah, yes, Danny sees what's happening there.  Stimulate these muscles and nerves like this, clean up the ecto and offer it some gentle guidance (thank you Frostbite, for teaching him the basics), and walk the guy through some exercises to help the affected area relearn normal operating procedures.
All of a sudden the older thugs in Hood's gang are practically back in their prime.  Turns out, a lot of what we associate with age is actually the accumulated effects of poor self care.  It's not that time makes you frail, it's that twenty-somethings haven't had time to fuck themselves up too badly.
Between Hood setting up safety nets to make sure everyone has access to adequate nutrition and medical treatment, the physical and psychological benefits of massage, and being cleansed regularly of the bad juju from the Lazarus pit and the various curses on the city, these guys have a new lease on life.
Danny is beginning to think there should be classes on the ghostly/liminal health and hygiene stuff that works differently than for people who haven't had close brushes with death.  It's just too bad the Anti Ecto Acts would make it so dangerous.  Maybe one of the Bats overhears him talking about this on a video call with Sam and Tucker.
Maybe Damian was spying on him because the idea of massage fixing pit rage was suspicious to him.  Surely they would already know.  Maybe Hood just arrived a little early for a session and didn't want to interrupt, then heard something concerning.
Either way, the Red Hood gang is now hosting underground health classes for the undead and death touched (and possibly also making plans for the GIW).  Danny calls Frostbite for help putting a lesson plan together.
Solomon Grundy is suddenly more functional than he's ever been before and has become a valued member of the Crime Alley community.  (Your choice whether he joins the Red Hood gang or just settles down as a civilian)
As everyone's ghostly health improves, Crime Alley begins to gradually take on qualities of a healthy shared haunt.  Some weirdness occurs, but it's not bad.  Structures become sturdier and easier to repair.  Conflict between residents has lost any edge of genuine hostility and taken on an undercurrent of solidarity.  Residents find themselves able to sense when a neighbor needs help/support as well as parse the intent behind assistance offered.
Crime alley was always a tight-knit community, but this strange understanding trust in each other is new.  Gotham's various curses begin to lose their hold on Crime Alley like an infection being cleared out by an immune system.
Batman:  *looks at Crime Alley* What the heck is going on over there?
Jason’s masseur deserves a fucking pay raise.
He has no idea how the fuck the dude gives back massages that quiet the goddam pit but you bet your ass Jason is recommending Danny to anyone who looks like they need a massage.

Family
Sequel to ‘Mask.’
.
.
.
It was amusing, watching Daniel eat like this.
Vlad had decided to institute a tradition of family mealtimes, and had decanted Daniel from the containment unit about thirty minutes previously. Daniel had been sulky, at first, saying that Vlad should have given him more warning and attempting to fend off the wheelchair Vlad had procured for him. But his strength had been insufficient to the task, and, once Vlad had wheeled him into the other half of the basement, where he had created a luxurious but secret home for his children, he had fallen into a contented and obedient stupor once again.
An adjustment to the flow of his ectoplasm IV perked him up just enough to allow him to attempt to eat breakfast. Attempt. Poorly. He was obviously as ravenous as he was exhausted, but he was equally uncoordinated. He only got a forkful of pancakes to his mouth every third attempt at best.
"Father," said Danielle, tugging at his sleeve. She was, more often than not, the spokesperson for her siblings. "Is Danny alright?"
Vlad nodded, absently. "What he is doing is very difficult, my dear, but he will come to no lasting harm." Perhaps he should allow Daniel to eat separately, after this.
"He won't melt?"
"No, no, he's quite stable. You needn't worry about that. He is simply tired, and his mind is otherwise occupied. Imagine if you were trying to, say, set the table while reading four books at once. Your coordination might suffer, too, hm?"
His children nodded. "That makes sense," said Dmitri, adjusting his eye patch. "I guess we didn't think of it that way."
Vlad gave his son an indulgent smile. "You are young, Dmitri. You don't have to think of everything."
Dmitri nodded, and then said, wistfully, "I don't suppose we're still following the schedule?"
"I'm afraid not," said Vlad. "You, of course, can continue with the activities I planned, but Daniel won't be able to." Four of the five children at the table sighed. Daniel continued to struggle with his breakfast. "But you may be able to meet David soon. His stabilization has been progressing nicely."
This pronouncement was greeted with smiles and cheers. Damien reached over and hugged Dmitri. Daniel jumped and dropped his fork.
He made a very small, upset fweh sound and stared angrily at his plate.
Vlad regarded him with a sigh. While family mealtimes were good for his children, for their social skills, their stability, and for their bond with Daniel, they would not suffice for getting Daniel the nutrients he needed. True, they could be supplemented intravenously, or with a feeding tube, but Vlad didn't want to resort to that just yet.
Dustin reached over to Daniel's plate and began to cut up Daniel's pancakes. He speared some on the end of the fork and offered them to Daniel, who took them with a kind of blurred dignity. Vlad had to cover his mouth. It wouldn't do to laugh at Daniel being hand-fed like a small child. Yet.
.
Danny was wheeled out of the underground dining room and his brain sluggishly began to work again. "Are they okay?" he asked.
"Hmm?" said Vlad.
"Being apart."
"For now. A few hours with you a day should keep them from deteriorating further. Once David has reached their level of stability, you will be able to spend much more time with them." Vlad ruffled Danny's hair and Danny hummed. Then he realized how wrong that was and scowled.
Vlad walked over to the tube Danny had been in for the last several hours and started adjusting things.
Danny shifted uncomfortably in the chair; he was still too woozy to try to walk. "Vlad?"
"Yes? What?"
"Do we- Can we do something different? Not that."
"Oh?" Vlad turned to face him. "I would have thought that you would have wanted to get this over with as soon as possible. This is the fastest way."
Danny shrugged. He didn't really want to explain to Vlad how unnerving being in the tube had been.
Vlad drummed his fingers on the side of the tube and contemplated Danny. "There are a few other things we could try."
Danny nodded. "Good. Right. Before we start, though, um, I don't suppose you have a bathroom down here?"
.
"Do I have to be strapped down?" asked Danny.
"Daniel," said Vlad, "you agreed to cooperate."
"Yes, with stabilizing Ellie, Dustin, Dmitri, Damien, and David," said Danny. "Not with letting you tie me up so you can bully me into doing things." Never mind that he wouldn't be able to resist whatever Vlad wanted from him, anyway. He was too weak.
"I don't want you to damage yourself by falling off the table, hitting yourself during a seizure, or falling under the ectoplasm and doing your best impression of drowning," said Vlad. "You can't actually drown, of course, but the fact remains that these are all experimental procedures."
Danny shuddered at the word experiment. He'd been half-ghost for long enough for that word to sink into his subconscious and give him nightmares. "But are they necessary?"
"I suppose not," admitted Vlad. He approached Danny with two quick strides and knelt in front of him. He held up an object that looked like a thick bolt with a thick cable running from one end. "This needs to make contact with your core."
"You're joking."
"No. The idea is to strengthen and more directly transmit your ectosignature."
Danny bit his lip. He knew exactly how something touching your core felt, thanks to Dan. "Maybe you had better strap me down."
.
They fell into a sort of routine. For most of the day and night, Danny would soak in an ectoplasm bath, connected to David. At regular intervals Vlad would wake him up, convince him to exercise a small amount, and then bring him to the other side of the basement, where the other clones lived.
At one point, Vlad had handed Danny a phone and he'd had a very confused conversation with his sister. He'd tried to communicate what was happening to her, and that she should call Sam and Tucker, but he'd just finished a disorienting stabilization session, and he wasn't sure how clear he'd been.
Danny didn't know if Vlad had kept up his other promise, to keep Amity Park safe, but, honestly, most of the time he was too tired to even care. Which was sort of disturbing in the moments he did have energy to care.
Also, whenever he was awake he was hungry. Ravenous. It was weird. His food intake had increased after the accident, but he knew he had never eaten this much every day before. But he wasn't gaining weight. He was losing it.
Danny woke up to Vlad undoing his restraints. "Izzit time t'eat?" he asked.
"Soon," said Vlad. "David is ready."
"Oh," said Danny, with vague interest. He sat up and leaned on the side of the tub he was in. Ectoplasm lapped around his thighs.
Slowly, Vlad decanted David from the tube, first draining away the ectoplasm and then rinsing David off with a stream of water from the top of the tube. He opened the tube up, and began to detach him from the various wires and leads. As he did so, David began to wake, stirring and humming. Finally, after Vlad disconnected the last wire, David opened his eyes and smiled. Danny's lips mirrored the motion.
He was happy. David was family, clone or not.
.
The next meal was more confusing than usual. His eyes were having trouble focusing, and the conversation around him was nothing more than a smear of noise. Everyone was happy, though, so that was good.
To Danny's dull surprise, Vlad did not take him back out to the lab, but instead to a different room. This was different. And upsetting. He frowned. This room was bright colors and soft shapes. Vlad took him out of the wheelchair and set him on the floor.
Again, this was different. Why was it different? He couldn't think. He didn't like this.
Then all his siblings came close, and he found himself in the middle of a cuddle pile. Oh! This was nice. Danny closed his eyes and let himself relax the rest of the way.
.
"Now, children," said Vlad, after he was quite certain both that his children would be gentle with Daniel and that Daniel was firmly asleep, "I will be leaving Daniel with you during the day, but I need you to follow certain rules. First, Daniel must stay below ground. Second, at least three of you must stay with Daniel at all times." He rather suspected that none of them would let Daniel leave their sight, at least for the near future, but that was the number he had calculated would keep Daniel in a docile state. "Thirdly, if any of the alarms go off, you must fetch me at once. Finally, and this is very important, when he is awake, I want you to try to talk him into staying with us. You remember those videos I showed you, yes?"
David looked confused, but all the others nodded.
"They were so mean to him," said Dustin.
"They shot at him!" added Ellie.
"You're not like that at all, Father," said Damien. "I can't believe those people are his parents!"
Vlad smiled. "David, I will show you the videos at a later time. For now, get to know your siblings."
David nodded vigorously. He hadn't quite gotten the hang of talking, yet.
Vlad left for the lab, humming. Yes, his little family was shaping up nicely. If he could get Daniel to join it with some subliminal messaging and the well-meaning pressure of the clones, well, that would just be icing on the cake, wouldn't it?

Part 5 [FF | AO3] of Protocol: The world has changed since the Merge. Ghosts-threats-are everywhere, the Guys in White are in control, and trust is a risk when friends can so easily become foes. Dystopian AU (courtesy of competent, world-merging GiW)
Previously:
Red light engulfed Danny, and all Jazz could hear was his scream.
He dropped.
His screams cut off as he crashed into the ground, but they still echoed in her ears.
Jazz couldn’t breathe, but her eyes met Sam’s. Sam’s lip curled before she picked her way across the wreckage. “You broke protocol.” Sam’s voice was cold. Hard. Cruel. “You let that ghost separate us and then you pursued without waiting for backup.” She reached Danny and kicked him in the side, hard. Jazz winced. “Still animate. Come on. Let’s secure it.”
-|-
Fenton made no move to help her haul the ghost from their jet once they reached the base, but Sam wasn’t entirely convinced her sensibilities regarding it hadn’t been compromised. She’d once thought it a brother, after all. The betrayal of what it actually was should cut deep, but perhaps it was hard for Fenton not to see her brother looking out from the ghost’s lying eyes.
The ghost was conscious again, despite its ectoplasm leaking all over the previously-pristine containment cell on their jet. The other members of their team had paused to jeer, but Fenton had dismissed them with a bark, and they’d gone. Phantom had been their capture; no one else would share that glory.
Sam was only letting Fenton share credit because she’d distracted it in that critical moment.
Fenton took down other ghosts readily enough. She didn’t lack skill, not anymore. Sam knew she was still the better shot—she always had been—but Fenton could rival any of the senior staff at this point.
She’d be a good one to train new recruits, if anyone could convince her to step back from the field.
Not that anyone would. She was a Fenton. Her family name was well known now, and not just because of the abomination that had once been her brother.
It made Sam’s insides curdle, thinking that she had once called it a friend.
Thinking that she had helped it.
Repeatedly.
“Make the report,” she told Fenton. “I’ll get the ghost down to processing.”
Fenton met her eyes, knowing exactly what Sam was doing. “Are you sure?” she asked quietly.
“You’re still a good hunter.” Hesitation alone wasn’t enough reason for Sam to stab her in the back and report her. Even with that, Sam trusted Fenton more than she trusted the newer recruits. Someone with a sloppy shot would get her killed, and Fenton wouldn’t let a ghost attack her.
Besides, she was willing to let Fenton fudge the report for something as small as that. She wasn’t willing to swap places and let Fenton take the ghost anywhere while unsupervised, however many cameras were spaced throughout the facility. Getting the ghost to processing wouldn’t take that long, anyway. She’d be back before Fenton finished.
It wasn’t strictly following protocol, of course. They were supposed to make the reports together. But the higher ups would understand. This wasn’t a ghost she was willing to pass off to anyone else. Not before she got it to processing, anyway. She knew better than most how tricky it could be, but they’d be equipped to handle its tricks down there.
“Thank you,” Fenton whispered. Her eyes lingered on the ghost for a few more seconds before she turned her back on it and headed off. That technically meant Sam needed to get someone else to help her get the ghost out of the cell, but it was more for redundancy’s sake than anything else. She was content to have them watch her work.
The Guys in White gadgetry was simple to use. Intuitive. Besides, a good many pieces weren’t unlike the FentonWorks weaponry she’d once used. Considering all the Fentons’ designs had been turned over to the Guys in White, that wasn’t a surprise. After the raids on Vlad’s various secret labs, his technology had been appropriated, too. There were others, of course, but Sam didn’t trust anything that she knew came out of the hands of completely inept ghost hunters.
Just because they’d improved since the Merge, out of necessity if nothing else, it didn’t mean she’d trust their previous so-called research.
The ghost was still twitching from the electricity she’d run through it before opening the cell, but it was a simple thing to snap on the cuffs, attach a lead chain, and drag it to its feet. “You’re coming with me,” she told it as it blinked stupidly at her, sagging against the outside wall of the cell. She pulled, and it stumbled into place alongside her.
“Sam,” it croaked.
Did it think she was still its friend?
Maybe she should let it. The very idea made her nauseous, but if it thought it could trust her? If it thought she was just doing this for show? She’d get a lot more information out of it than if it knew the truth.
Or, rather, accepted the truth.
“Protocol,” she hissed, hoping it would take that to mean she couldn’t talk.
It blinked and nodded, but it had never been one to keep silent for long. It barely waited until they were out of earshot of the other agent before it asked, “Where are we going?”
“Processing.” She knew she should add I’m sorry or some equivalent, just for the show, but she couldn’t force the words past her lips just yet. She glanced pointedly at the cameras instead. It licked its lips and bobbed its head again.
“Do…do I want to know what’s involved in processing?” it ventured after a moment.
No. “Cursory evaluation, subject assignment, security recommendations. For your accommodations.” She put as much of a sneer into the word as she could muster. Let it think she hated that she was doing this. Let it think that she didn’t want to, that circumstances were forcing her to. Let it think her pretense was for a different reason. “It’ll mostly be to check a box than anything else. Your reputation precedes you.”
“Yeah,” it whispered. “I’ve been a target for a while. We all have.”
“You’re a bigger prize than some.”
“Which will make my escape that much more meaningful,” it said. It still spoke quietly, barely moving its lips even when she glanced at it, but it was able to put an impressive amount of force behind the words. It had only slightly turned its face towards her, but it looked…hopeful.
She stamped down on the disgust that rose within her and fought to keep her face and voice smooth. “It would,” she managed, which was as close to agreement as she could get. They weren’t going to just let it escape. None of their specimens escaped. Some had been destroyed, eventually destabilizing and turning into ectoplasm, but this one would be more resilient than that.
“So not right away, huh?”
It did think she was still on its side. Good. She gave her head a minute shake. “Not yet.” Not ever.
“Too risky, I guess.”
Was that a note of fear in its voice, buried beneath bravado and false acceptance?
“I’ll hold on, I promise. No matter what they do to me.”
They. How foolish it was, not to sort her in with the others, if only out of a sense of self-preservation. She could have told it that it was better to assume the worst and be wrong than to assume the best and be wrong.
It would learn soon enough.
Sam stopped in front of the elevator. “Processing is in the first level of the basement,” she told it as the elevator dinged and the doors slid open.
It followed her inside—it had to, as she still had it on a short leash—and waited until the doors had shut again before saying, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. When they attacked. I…I tried, but….”
“It’s okay.” When she thought back on it, the attack hadn’t come soon enough. She’d done so much for the rebels. Too much.
“Have you seen Tucker?”
Tucker. She still wasn’t sure if he’d come around to the right side, but after she’d come here, she’d sent word to have one of the other tech guys screen his communications. No guarantee, of course, if Tucker’s skills were better than whoever was trying to hack him, but Tucker was valuable, and she didn’t want him taken for questioning unnecessarily. If they hadn’t captured this ghost, she might worry more, but since they had? Tucker’s hands would be tied even if he did still want to help the rebels. The abomination would have been one of his last consistent points of outside communication, and without a leader, a face, a symbol, something to rally around, the rebels would crumble sooner rather than later anyway.
“Field agents don’t associate with the techies.”
It lapsed into silence, finally, as they arrived at the floor for processing.
Sam nodded to the agent at the end of the hall as they exited the elevator. “This is where I leave you. With Agent N.” Processing was contained, every square inch coated in phase proof finish or built from treated material. It wouldn’t be able to escape, even if Agent N displayed uncharacteristic incompetence. “I need to get back to Fenton. Jazz,” she amended too late, seeing the look that crossed its face.
“Right,” it breathed. “I…. I’ll see you soon, I hope?”
“I don’t know,” she said. Let him think they still kept her schedule in the dark, even though she wasn’t among the newest recruits. It was still looking at her, so she twisted her mouth into a smile. The best she could manage, anyway. “Sorry.” The word felt wrong. “Um…good luck.”
It snorted. “Thanks, Sam, but luck isn’t going to get me out of this.”
No, it wouldn’t, but luckily, she didn’t need to come up with a response because Agent N was in earshot. Not looking at the ghost beside her, she said to her colleague, “This is our latest acquisition.”
Agent N grinned at her and took the proffered lead. “We caught it at last.”
“We did,” she whispered, feeling its eyes burning into her. She stood her ground as Agent N took it in for processing. When it looked back at her, something inside her twisted, and she turned away.

“I thought you were dead” + “Pin my hands above my head” kisses
*****
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
“Mick, for the 15th time, I am fine.”
He helps her to the couch and is surprisingly gentle in setting her down, holding most of her weight so she doesn't have to strain.
“I don’t know–you’re bleeding. Kind of a lot.”
“For a dude with multiple face tattoos, you sure are squeamish.”
“I don’t like blood.”
“You’re full of surprises, Mick.”
He actually looks like he might faint, and Beth actually feels bad for the guy. He looks like Danny when he sees blood, and when Danny sees blood, the only thing that will keep him from freaking out is a chore.
“Will you grab me a glass of water, please?”
“Yeah.”
She lets him figure out where the glasses are himself. She figures the longer she can distract him, the better. Just when he’s opening the pantry, the backdoor is flung open and Annie storms in, still in her robe and pajamas, phone pressed to her ear, and Beth already knows that’s Ruby on the line.
The second Annie sees her, she rushes to her side, already scoping out Beth’s thigh for the source of all that blood.
“Yeah, I’m here, hang on a sec–oh, my god, are you okay? She’s bleeding to death, Ruby.”
“Jesus!” Beth snatches the phone out of Annie’s hand and steadies her voice as best she can when she speaks into it. “I am not bleeding to death, it’s just a scratch.”
“I don’t know, man. Looks like Old Faithful to me–move so I can see.”
“I’m sorry,” Ruby cuts in. “Old Faithful? Should you be in a hospital?”
“No.”
“I can handle it,” Annie says, like it’s obvious. “You’re gonna have to take your pants off.”
Beth waves her off as she continues to reassure Ruby, “I swear, I’m fine. Everything is fine. Just trust me, okay?”
Ruby sighs heavily while Annie sits at Beth's feet, waiting for the call to wrap up.
“Fine. But i swear to god, if I find out you bled out, I’ll kill you.”
“Fair enough. I will call you in the morning.”
“Kay. Love you.”
“Love you, too.”
“What about me?” Annie pipes in, but Ruby hangs up. “Rude.”
The moment Beth drops the phone, Rio bursts through the front door, jaw set, eyes glaring at everyone in sight, but most directly at Beth, who is trying to seem like just sitting up straight doesn’t send a shooting pain all along the side of her thigh and leg.
“She alright?” He asks Mick, who nods curtly.
“Stray bullet grazed her. Bleeding a little, but she’s good.”
“That’s too bad. Maybe if she’d lost a leg she’d learn that when I say she shouldn’t come, it’s not really a suggestion.”
He’s looking at her when he says it, nostrils flaring with barely contained anger, but Beth hasn’t bled out and so she’s not about to back down so easily.
“Excuse me, you didn’t say ‘you shouldn’t come’, I asked you who you were meeting, and you said ‘it doesn’t concern you’.”
Annie snorts at Beth’s “Rio voice” but sobers up at the pointed glare Rio shoots her way, getting up immediately to excuse herself.
“You know what? I think uh, I think you’ve got everything under control. You’re not dead, so. I’m going to skedaddle. I do have a house full of kids right now, so.”
“Yeah, where are the kids?”
“Nance is with them, relax.”
“I’ll walk you out,” Mick offers, following Annie out of the house.
The second the door clicks shut, Beth barrels right into it before Rio can talk over her.
“Before you say anything else, I just want to reiterate that if you just learned to use your words with the mere capacity of  like a five yeard old with basic communication skills, this wouldn’t have happened.”
He’s still glaring when she gets up and limps through her bedroom, into the bathroom, where she pulls a first aid kit from under the sink.
It hurts a little still. A radiating kind of pain, like a bee sting. A very big bee sting. But if she complains about it, she’ll never hear the end of it and she’s tired, so she makes quick work of pulling off her pants, only wincing a little when pushing past the wound because Rio’s right behind her, stopping in the doorway to watch her work.
“It’s just a scratch,” she tells him. “It’s a big scratch. But just a scratch.”
He crosses his arms and she hears him exhale.
“I mean, I was bound to get shot, right? To be honest, I kinda always thought it’d be by you, but -- best laid plans or whatever.”
She cleans it quickly, then holds a wet towel to it, breathing shakily through the pain, her own rambling distracting her.
“And before you start lecturing me, I wasn’t even there long. I left when you told me to leave, because unlike you, I can read a room. But the shooting started pretty soon after that and I just jumped in Mick’s car, because I’m what? Quick on feet.”
She does hiss a little when she attempts kicking off her jeans, sighing with relief when she finally manages it before leaning back against the bathroom counter. She barely has a moment to register him moving, when he’s in front of her, and cupping her face, and then he’s kissing her. One, two kisses, and on the third he lingers there, hands on her face, and a little desperate.
When he pulls back, he swiftly wraps his arms around her, crushing her to him and she can feel him actively breathing her in, clearly unable to voice his concern, though there’s no need. He’s never held her, not like this, and the emotion wells up in Beth’s throat when she hugs him back, gently rubbing his back.
“I’m okay,” she reassures him and he nods against her shoulder before slowly drawing back, his attention quickly returning to her injury.
Now he kneels in front of her and turns her sideways so he can take a close look.
Beth’s still processing the unexpected moment of tenderness when she hears him grunt his disapproval.
“This is gonna scar, I hope you know that.”
Rolling her eyes, she steps carefully around him and back into the bedroom.
“I’m fine!”
“Hard to believe that when you’ve got blood gushing out of your leg right now.” he gruffs behind her.
As she rummages through her dresser for a pair of shorts she can wear to bed, she hears him flop down on the bed, and when she turns around, pair of blue silk pajama shorts in her hand, he’s flat on his back, face covered with both hands.
“Okay, I feel like people need to calm down about this. The overmebellishing is...a little much.”
“It’s like you’re incapable of hearing ‘no’. I say ‘don’t go’ and it’s like an invitation to you.”
Beth sighs and drops the shorts on the floor in favor of carefully climbing astride him on the bed.
“Look,” she starts, sitting low on his waist. “Don’t take this the wrong way because I’m obviously very fond of you for the most part, but please, just shut the fuck up.”
His hands fall away then and his face scrunches into a hilarious grimace.
“Excuse me?”
“Do you want to keep barating me? Or do you want to have sex?”
She gasps when he flips her onto her back, and then laughs at the disgruntled look on his face despite evidence of the opposite pressing into her.
“Careful, I’m injured.”
“Thought it was just a scratch, tough guy,” he counters, pushing her hands above her head and holding them there with one hand while the other ventures lover down her abdomen and under her shirt.
“Yes, but I’m fragile.”
She squirms when he grazes her ribcage on his way to cup and gently squeeze her right breast.
“You’re a lot of things, but fragile is not one of them.”
She tugs at her hands but he pins them harder, leveling his gaze to hers as he does so.
“Just once, do what I tell you and stay still.”
She’s about to hit him with a surely excellent comeback when he kisses her. All smooth and mind-numbing. When he nips at her bottom lip, she moans softly, then grunts when another attempt to free her hands gets her a counter squeeze of her wrists, and when she feels his tongue do that thing that makes her head all swimmy, she relents, deciding it’s in her best interests to just let him think he’s won.
Just this once. Because really, they’re both winning.
