Murder On The Orient Express (2017) 9/10
After a passenger is murdered on the Orient Express, famous detective Hercule Poirot must investigate the other eleven passengers to find out who the killer is. Based on the novel by Agatha Christie.
The plot is straightforward, it literally says what happens in the title, which, isn't the worst thing. Take 'Snakes On A Plane' for example. The same idea, and it's a good movie too.
The cast is very diverse, with different names, such as Daisy Ridley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Leslie Odom Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Kevin Bateman, Josh Gad, Willem Dafoe, and Penelope Cruz. I feel like they did a great job with he casting. It's like Ocean's Eleven; none of them look like they would hang out with each other.
The scenery is beautiful; the mountains and the countryside are gorgeous, sharply contrasting what will happen to one of the characters later on.
There's anticipation as the audience is left to wonder who could have murdered the victim. There's frustration at not knowing who it is. There's fear, and even doubt, as some of the characters look like they wouldn't be capable of murder.
Although, the pace is slow, and there's a lot of dialogue, but most of the anticipation comes from the mystery of who the killer might be.
Because the characters are so different from one another, it's shocking when the revelation comes to light. One of them is devoted to God, for example, and she's just as much a suspect because she sleeps near the area that the crime occured.
I'll be honest, I've seen this movie two times now, and I'd watch it a third time. It's not so action packed, if that's your cup of tea, but there's tension, there's drama, and it's a Who-Dunnit, type premise. Stellar cast, too.
Totally worth seeing, and worth your time.

do you have any recs where the hero is not conventionally handsome? Like maybe his a bit chubby or something? There’s not a lot of rep for men other than being Tall and jacked and sometimes he thinks he’s ugly because his face is craggily or something.
I have some, but I will say that I think this is easier to find in contemporary romance because a lot of heroes in historical, fantasy, PNR, tend towards being hyper masculine. Which means that even when they aren't conventionally hot, they do get that "craggy" description, or "almost handsome" in a way that suggests he's even hotter than he would be if he was conventionally handsome. Like, Derek Craven in Dreaming of You has snaggly teeth, but he's so competent and masculine (and built) that he is. HOT. Even if he's not described as being conventionally handsome.
But I will also add that many of the ones where there's a specific callout towards things like the hero being fat or short (things we don't associate with .02% body fat 6'4" romance heroes) somehow? Are cinnamon roll hero books? Like, I don't think I've read a book where the hero is described as a true bad boy or alpha who's also fat. Or short. Which is honestly fucked, like you don't have to be 6'5" with a nine pack to consensually throw someone around the room like a rag doll. And my thing is, I hate cinnamon roll heroes nine times out of ten, so. It's hard out there.
Xeni by Rebekah Weatherspoon is a cute book with a fat Scottish hero. I'll be honest, it's a bit CUTE for me, but if you like cute (and pegging) the book totally works.
Sworn to the Shadow God by Ruby Dixon is a fantasy romance I find quite enjoyable in which a gamer girl becomes bound to the God of Death in a parallel universe. He's described as being kind of like... too much? All over? In a way that isn't conventionally handsome. (Adam Driver. He's Adam Driver. But the heroine has nothing to do with Daisy Ridley, as she's Latina among other things, and I wouldn't call this a Reylo book.) Like all Ruby Dixon books, this is very fun, the heroine spends a lot of time being like "this is just like a DnD campaign!!!" only to be proven wrong. And she does get her period and he does prove that Fear is Not A Factor For Him which is something you really don't see enough of in romance.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt is like... Jane Eyre if Jane was a widow and also a secretary instead of a governess and there was masked sex. The hero is described as ugly like, all the time, lol. He has smallpox scars that are disfiguring to the point that he has a hard time finding a wife. I will also add that Hoyt often writes heroes who are unconventional looking. I don't think the hero of The Leopard Prince is described as much besides "nondescript". The hero of The Serpent Prince, however, is flash as fuck.
Westcliff, the hero of It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas, is famously described as like... kinda short and box-headed, but there'S SOMETHING about him. Something bitches (Lisa Kleypas is bitches) CAN'T RESIST. Something that COMPELS HER SO.
The Taming of a Highlander by Elisa Braden has a hero who was handsome, but after being tortured in prison for months he comes out with a bunch of disfiguring scars, missing an eye. Personally I find him super hot, but it's something a lot of people find scary in the book.
Twist by Kylie Scott is.... not my favorite Kylie Scott, but it's cute if you like a small-town romance. The hero is described as not being super toned, and he's a Big Boy. He's the less attractive brother and he basically catfishes a girl who was talking to his brother online. Lol.
In Something Fabulous by Alexis Hall (m/m) Bonny is described as being on the plumper side. He's like, CURVY.
Ship Wrecked by Olivia Dade is one that didn't super work for me, but it's a celebrity romance in which both the hero and heroine (costars on a Game of Thrones type show) are fat. They hook up right before they begin working together, and then they can't do anything for YEARS until the show is over.
The hero of The Intimacy Experiment, another contemporary that was fine but not great for me, has a hero who is hot but noticeably short. He's also a rabbi, which I did love.

Star Wars and the Trouble with Toxic Fans
Alright Star Wars fam, gather 'round. Let's talk about something kind of gross: toxic fans. We all know and love Star Wars, a galaxy far, far away filled with epic battles, adorable droids, and the wisdom of grumpy old Yoda. But lately, there's been a darkness creeping in, and it ain't Darth Vader. A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away... Star Wars first blasted onto the scene in 1977 and became a cultural phenomenon. The space opera with its laser swords, ragtag heroes, and epic space battles captivated audiences worldwide. Over the years, the franchise has expanded with new movies, TV shows, books, and enough merchandise to fill a Death Star. Here's the thing: Star Wars has a bit of a problem with some fans. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy recently spoke out about the online harassment faced by women involved in the franchise. Actresses like Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran were bombarded with negativity after starring in the latest trilogy. Now, a new Star Wars series, "The Acolyte," is getting slammed by some fans simply because it features strong female characters. The Acolyte: A New Hope or a Target? "The Acolyte" takes place way before Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. It's a fresh story with a female showrunner, Leslye Headland, and a cast packed with talented actresses. Sounds pretty awesome, right? Well, some folks online don't see it that way. There are toxic fans whining about "too many women" and using gross nicknames for the show. Kennedy isn't having any of it. She says stories should reflect the real world, which means having strong female characters. She also acknowledges how tough it can be for women in Star Wars, especially with the negativity from some fans. Headland, the showrunner, has even had to limit her time online to avoid the toxicity. Let's be real: Star Wars is for everyone. It's about good versus evil, hope triumphing over despair, and maybe learning to use the Force (practice makes perfect!). If you can't handle a galaxy with awesome female heroes, well, that's your problem. Star Wars is bigger than your bad vibes. The Force is Calling for Kindness So, here's the deal: Star Wars fans come in all shapes, sizes, and genders. Let's celebrate the franchise for its creativity, action, and timeless themes. And maybe, just maybe, lay off the online hate. The Force is strong with all of us, and that includes respecting each other. (Source: Variety) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2x_9gTmCXU

'...Former Doctor Who star David Tennant will be at the helm, hosting the event live from the Royal Festival Hall in London.
All eyes will be on Christopher Nolan’s gripping biopic Oppenheimer, leading the pack as the favourite to clinch the Best Film prize, boasting an impressive 13 nominations in total....
Who is presenting the Baftas?
TV and film star David Tennant, 52, is the master of ceremonies on the night - and will be joined by a whole host of A-list guest presenters.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Baftas have lined up former England footballer David Beckham and Grammy winner Dua Lipa to hand out statues alongside Hollywood luminaries such as Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Hugh Grant, and Gillian Anderson.
Joining this illustrious lineup are Andrew Scott, Bryce Dallas Howard, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Daisy Edgar Jones, Daryl McCormack, Keegan-Michael Key, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Lily Collins, Marisa Abela, Rebecca Ferguson, Sheila Atim, and Taylor Russell, ensuring a night filled with glitz and glamour...
Who is nominated for a 2024 Bafta?
Cillian Murphy is in the running to be named best actor at this year’s Baftas with his nuclear bomb biopic Oppenheimer dominating the nominations.
He faces competition from fellow Irishman Barry Keoghan for his turn in Saltburn, as well as Bradley Cooper who is nominated for Maestro. The shortlist is completed by Rustin’s Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers and Teo Yoo in Past Lives.
The success of Oppenheimer’s box office rival Barbie is also recognised with Margot Robbie nominated for leading actress along with Carey Mulligan in Maestro, The Color Purple’s Fantasia Barrino, Sandra Huller in Anatomy of a Fall, Rye Lane’s Vivian Oparah and Emma Stone for Poor Things.
Huller is also nominated for supporting actress for The Zone of Interest with competition coming from Oppenheimer’s Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple, Claire Foy in All of Us Strangers, Saltburn’s Rosamund Pike and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers.
Ryan Gosling gets a nod for his role as Ken in the Barbie film with a nomination for supporting actor, along with Dominic Sessa for The Holdovers, Paul Mescal for All of Us Strangers, Saltburn’s Jacob Elordi, Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer and Robert De Niro who is recognised for the Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Martin Scorsese’s epic crime drama is also hoping to be named Best Film, with competition coming from Anatomy of a Fall, The Holdovers, Poor Things as well as Oppenheimer.
Poor Things is in the running for outstanding British Film, with other nominees including Ridley Scott’s historical epic Napoleon, Ken Loach’s The Old Oak, Wonka, The Zone of Interest, All Of Us Strangers, How to have Sex, Rye Lane, Scrapper and Saltburn...
What were the biggest snubs?
Irish actor Andrew Scott had been widely tipped for recognition for his moving performance in the drama All Of Us Strangers - but ultimately missed out on a best lead actor nomination...
What were the biggest surprises?
...Andrew Haigh's nomination for Best Director for All of Us Strangers also stands out, considering the absence of other high-profile directors in the category...'

Anthony’s Stupid Daily Blog (472): Sun 2nd Jun 2023
It sounded like the guy in the bunk underneath me this morning was rubbing something onto his skin for a good half an hour in the early hours. I didn’t get a look at him and I’m glad no I didn’t because I suspect he might have been either a burn victim or have a skin condition like The Singing Detective. Anywho I was up early to get the fuck out of the hostel. I woke up at 9:45 and while initially thought my train home wasn’t until an hour later, thankfully I checked my ticket and saw that my train actually left at 10:20 so I quickly packed all my shit up and headed for the train station. Even though in had a seat the train was packed and it turned out it was because a train from 8am had been cancelled and everyone from that train had piled onto this one. The driver turned on the speaker and told us that this train had a maximum capacity of 400 and there were currently 700 on board. He then made it clear, with the delivery of an annoyed supply teacher, that he would not be moving the train until these extra passengers fucked off. Despite three further pleas to leave these additional passengers still refused to move. After half an hour they police turned up to force all the stragglers off the train. A beautiful lass who looked a bit like Daisy Ridley sat opposite me asked me what was happening and I explained that the police had intervened. She said that this entire situation was ridiculous and I agreed stating “I know, that submarine that went to the Titanic was better organised then this”. Finally all the stubborn bastards were removed and the train set off for Newcastle at last. There was no one sat next to me when we left the station and a conductor who walked down the aisle asked me if the seat was free. I really wish I’d lied and said that my friend was in the toilet because I was soon joined by a middle aged Indian woman who got out her phone as soon as she sat down, made a call and didn’t get off it for the next two hours. I don’t know what the fuck she was saying because I don’t know or speak what language she was speaking but given that she was on the phone for two hours straight I’m guessing she was describing to her friend the plot of each individual episode of One Piece. Once I arrived in Newcastle I decided to stretch my legs before getting on the bus back home and decided to go clothes shopping for a new red leather jacket since my old one has been ripped apart by moths (that would be a good name for a band…not just “ripped apart by moths” the entire paragraph leading up to that bit as well). I went into TK Maxx and while I couldn’t find a red leather jacket I did find an amazing blue suit jacket with purple lining that I simply had to buy. It was so beautiful I think that if someone threw it on stage during an Iggy Pop concert I think even he wouldn’t be able to resist the urge to put it on even though his act for the last fifty years has consisted of him performing topless.
