Ok. Here’s my theory.

The shot we see of Eggman screaming out “WHAT?!?!?!” Is not from seeing Shadow teleport.

Just listen to the absolute anger and disbelief in his voice as he harshly glares at Gerald. Something tells me he at first teamed up with his grandfather in pursuit of dominating the world. Along with sharing his domination with a family member he looks up to and idolizes.

But this here is when he hears the truth from Gerald on what his true intention is. Not to rule it. But to destroy it.

And Ofcourse, if the world is destroyed, there’s nothing left to rule.

“If I can’t rule the world, I may as well save it.”

The line Eggman says in the background of the first trailer, may therefore, be him deciding to stop Gerald’s plan from succeeding.

The approach of Eggman no longer working with Gerald would also make valid sense. Not only because it does not line up with his desire. But it’s EXACTLY what he does in the game version. Eggman joins the Sonic team in saving the Earth the moment he finds a video of his grandfather proposing a plan of world eradication.
