You know how things can go so terribly south if you totally ignore a companion's questline...well I've been thinking about how none of the companions ask Tav about their own problems. I'm just thinking about what it might be like to reach the end of the adventure-everyone's questlines tied up in neat bows, the Absolute thwarted, city saved. Everyone's patting themselves on the backs and talking about settling down now that things are finally peaceful, all the while Tav is just standing there shattered. They let so many leads go. People they loved had died while they were tending to their party's problems. They helped others get well-deserved vengeance but no one has even asked why they need to leave camp to be alone each night. Tav just thought if they gave it their all to aiding others and kept patient then someone would offer a hand to them.

#95
The villain appears around the corner at a run, their hair still wet and their coat ridiculously crumpled. The hero raises an eyebrow at them as they practically skid to a halt in front of them.
“Sorry I’m late,” they say between ragged breaths.
“You’re fifteen minutes late,” the hero points out with a pointed check of their watch, “to your own crime.”
“To my crime?” the villain echoes indignantly. “Why would you invite me to my own crime?”
That barely makes sense to the hero. They root through their pocket and shove a tiny piece of paper in the villain’s face.
The villain’s eyes scan over the paper with an increasingly confused frown. “You told me to meet you here, and I have—even though you were, y’know, fifteen minutes late.”
“[Hero],” the villain says slowly. “This isn’t my writing.”
All accusations lining up in the hero’s mind grind to a halt. “Excuse me?”
“This– This isn’t my writing,” they repeat a little more intensely. They rummage through their coat for a moment, slapping a scrap of paper against the hero’s chest. “Did you write that?”
The hero pries the little piece of paper open.
meet me at the back of the bank at 6:30pm. not a fight. - Hero
“I didn’t write that,” the hero says automatically.
“What the hell is going on?” the villain demands. It seems to be aimed more at the air than the hero, but they feel inclined to answer regardless.
“I don’t know,” they say uselessly. “Someone wanted to bring us together. They knew we’d answer each other.”
They gesture with the note for emphasis. “Jesus Christ,” the villain says flatly. “It’s a two-for-one deal. We’re going to die.”
“We’re not going to die, [Villain],” the hero snaps, but the way the villain is glancing over their shoulder is making them want to do the same.
The villain’s face twitches into some kind of horrible acceptance of fate for a moment. They open their mouth, their breath misting in the evening air as they gear up to probably say something stupid, but a voice cuts them off.
“Isn’t this a nice little gathering?” the henchman says brightly. “I’m glad you both came.”

I wanted to say, bc I saw someone mention Geralt as an example of a predetermined character in an rpg that works, that yeah, I fully agree it can work! But in Geralt's case, for example, he's a well established character who's fully written before you start the game. He has his own traits, his flaws and shortcomings, history, relationships, etc. He's just as well written as any other character in the story, and the only things you have power over are his choices and a bit of his fighting style(sometimes his hair as well), but everything is made to fit with who this character is as established before the game even starts. Think of the origin characters in Baldur's Gate 3, it's the same thing- they're not customizable, they're established before you even start, and the only control you have is over their journey. None of these are ever meant to be a blank slate, and they're written as such.
With this Phyre character it's like they're trying so so hard to tread the line between "this is a character that stands on their own" and "this is a blank slate you can fully customize". What you end up with is a very "meh" sort of character, who's not one or the other, without enough wiggle room to make your own story however you want and not enough to get attached to them as they are. We get attached to Geralt bc he's a fully written character in the game, you just control his actions. The problem with Phyre is that they're neither a fully written character nor fully yours to write.

the real me is  an alien, nameless, inexplicable concept of a thing that does not operate on human terms, does not think with human thoughts the real me is a blank slate the me you see is a stolen face with stolen thoughts carefully crafted from my favourite parts of humanity the me you see is a character to play i stole every part of me  and built myself out of the gold in everyone else’s pans i took my favourite traits from others  and i built myself a patchwork personality of stolen gold i was always a blank slate, so i made myself a glowing golden patchwork god to play as method acting, so thorough that i have slowly become the character i play the blank slate, painted over with the stolen gold i am a fictional character, and that’s fine with me i am the patchwork god, made of stolen gold
lol can you tell i have autism
