A worker at one of Europe's biggest safari parks was mauled to death by a group of lions after a cage was left unlocked.
The incident occurred at the Taigan Safari Park in Crimea on Wednesday, according to the Russian Investigative Committee's office, which said the worker did not lock the protective internal door that would have separated her from them while completing cleaning duties. It is believed there were three lions in the cage.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into potential negligence but have not yet determined whether the worker or the park management is at fault. Taigan's owner, Oleg Zubkov, identified the victim as chief zookeeper Leokadia Perevalova, praising her as the "soul of the park" on his blog. She had worked at Taigan for 17 years.
"Unfortunately when I arrived there was nothing I could do to help. [Lions are] top predators and they do not forgive mistakes, he said, adding that no other employees were present at the time of the attack.
The park is in Belogorsk, about 22 miles east of the Crimean capital of Simferopol. It covers more than 75 acres and houses about 60 lions and several other predators. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, but most of the world does not recognize it as Russian territory.
This is not the first time the park has come under scrutiny for safety issues. Zubkov, who has been running parks since 1995, claims to have attended more than 300 legal cases related to fines and charges against him, many of which emerged following Russia's annexation of Crimea. He has often accused officials of unfairly targeting him and his park.
Just over half a mile of elevated walkways allow visitors to observe lions roaming freely, making it a popular attraction.
In 2018, a tourist was bitten by a lion while posing for a photo at the park. Zubkov dismissed the incident as isolated, but it raised questions about his approach to safety.
Additionally, the owner sparked controversy in 2019 when he threatened to euthanize more than 30 bears unless new homes could be found for them. Financial difficulties and ongoing legal pressures led him to issue a public plea, saying: "If no shelters take the bears, I'll have to shoot them."
He has said that without financial support from the government, the park relies entirely on revenue from ticket sales to stay operational.
In a previous cost-cutting measure, he had to resort to feeding dozens of Vietnamese pigs to the park's lions and tigers to cover the high costs of feeding the animals.
The legal system took charge in 2019, closing the doors of Taigan for 30 days after a complaint over expired feed being given to animals, an allegation Zubkov denies.

The 'source' is a reddit link and I cannot find any official source for this. but I think it's Lola from Lions Park Taygan/Taigan. I found this article which seems to have some information.
Obviously. This is really fucking bad. This is an incredibly dangerous animal and this situation is absolutely barrelling towards injury or even death, for the humans or for the lion in this situation.
Looking up the wiki I immediately found evidence of this being dodgy as hell. The guy who 'owns' the area has a load of big cats, tigers and lions, and already has one 'zoo' under another name.
In 2019 they had the 'walk with lions' event (?) banned because a lion bit a photographer. The article is here and is in Russian but can be translated. The guy is also considering taking up a lawsuit against the mother of a child who was bitten by a tiger.
So yeah this is dodgy as hell. This is not something that should be shared as a 'cute' story. At best this is an animal in a bad arrangement which has been acclimatised to humans and so is incapable of being in the wild, being exposed to dangerous situations for profit, and at worse it's a straight up abusive situation that is putting lives in danger for a quick buck.
I'm no expert on lions and tigers but even I can say that this is extremely dodgy. The crimea tourism website website has this as it's first picture
and it says that the park offers -
Under the supervision of the owner and inspirer of the Taigan, Oleg Zubkov, you can touch and play with lions and tigers, as well as their cubs. Perhaps you can not do this in any other place on Earth!
Which means that they are offering cub interactions, which are most definitely abusive and damaging to every creature involved in them. If they're not abused, they're heavily drugged in order to prevent injury from playful behaviour, and add in then you end up in a situation like Lola above who is HUGELY likely to accidentally hurt a person by leaping into a car like that.
Don't support facilities like this, do not share videos like this as 'cute', and never, ever trust a place that allows direct interaction between humans and apex predators.

Il saccheggio dello zoo di Belogorsk in Ucraina

#Repost @captivewildlifewatchdog with @get_repost ・・・ Despite the potential dangers involved, interactions between owners of predator facilities marketed as “sanctuaries” and captive big cats are increasing. CONservationists who handle their cats continually, insist that this type of #rebelconservation allows a close bond between them and their cat, as well as educating the public on the plight of big cats in the wild. How so is anyone’s guess. Since CWW’s expose on Taigan Park in the Crimea, conservation groups are noting Zubkov’s exploitation of his cats. Zubkov and his facility are now a “new” topic of discussion yet advocates within Russia are well aware of his extreme exploitation of his animals and the danger he places his staff and visitors including the cats. Watchdog is still inundated by Zubkov’s ignorant followers stating we “know nothing” about Zubkov nor his park. Hmmmm ok. In this video Zubkov’s complete disregard for the people standing around his cats is evidenced when two of his lions attack each other. Watchdog notes the scars on their back. Are these the result of constant fighting? Interactions with both cubs and adults run the risk of injury and even death. In the past two decades, dangerous incidents involving captive big cats have lead to deaths of 24 people, five of which were children. In addition, a reported 200 other people have been mauled or injured by captive big cats. Early this year Kevin Richardson’s captive pet lion killed a young woman. Note: a captive lion. NOT a lion in the wild. Olga Solomina managed to escape with her life when Zubkov’s cat attacked her. With more wildlife entrepreneurs dreaming big dreams of “rescuing” big cats and “educating” the public by giving their good deeds a modern spin with a hip rhetoric (see Richardson’s #rebelconservation and #schneider’s faddy, trendsetting and extremely immature big boy games) big cats continue to decline in the wild, continue to be commodified, continue to be bred, hunted and their body parts sold off to Asia, and all of this will continue unless changes are made at a legislative level in countries where breeding, selling, using and exploiting wildlife are https://www.instagram.com/p/BoHD5SzlMKX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1uts68c4bab1p
