Your letters: Take close look at voting records
"Even though candidates running for office have cast votes supporting some issues we care about, it is important to look closely at their total records before we conclude they represent the best interests of their constituents." - Jean Fisher of Wausau
Dear editor, Citing 7th District House Rep. Tom Tiffany’s stand to increase border security and his opposition to transgender participation in girls’ sports, a writer to the Wausau Pilot & Review recently concluded Mr. Tiffany is a strong advocate for the “safety and well being” of his constituency. Given Mr. Tiffany’s stated stand on the border, it is surprising that in February he voted…

There's a lot of Discourse between leftists going against them "I want to show my displeasure with Democrats by voting against them" vs liberal "Trump is literally promising to put Palestinians in concentration camps don't let him win", but it turns out there's a solution that makes both sides happy, and that's to vote for progressive candidates in Democratic primaries, and/or throw your support behind groups like the Justice Democrats who are working to do the same and have a track record of successfully replacing centrist Democrats with progressives like Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, etc.
If ten centrist democratic congressmen face serious primary challenges and even just like two of them lose, that will do WAY more to put the fear of progressive god in the hearts of Democrats than Trump winning in 2024.

(via Trump Goes Full Racist In Front Of Black Journalists - TPM – Talking Points Memo)
The Q&A session began with Scott asking Trump a direct and eloquent question about why Black voters should trust Trump due to his record of racist remarks and actions. It’s worth reading the question in full:
“You have pushed false claims about some of your rivals, from Nikki Haley to former President Barack Obama, saying that they were not born in the United States, which is not true. You have told four congressmen, women of color, who were American citizens, to go back to where they came from. You have used words like ‘animal’ and ‘rabbit’ to describe Black district attorneys. You’ve attacked Black journalists, calling them a ‘loser,’ saying the questions that they ask are ‘stupid and racist.’ You’ve had dinner with a white supremacist at your Mar-a-Lago resort.
“So, my question, sir, now that you are asking Black supporters to vote for you, why should Black voters trust you after you have used language like that?”
Trump responded belligerently.
“Well, first of all, I don’t think I’ve ever been asked a question in such a horrible manner, a first question. You don’t even say hello. Who are you? Are you with ABC? Because I think they’re a fake news network. A terrible network,” Trump began.
“I think it’s disgraceful that I came here in good spirit. I love the Black population of this country, I’ve done so much for the Black population of this country,” he said, a line he attempted to push throughout the interview sans evidence.

An imam linked to prominent Michigan Democrats like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Rep. Rashida Tlaib said in a sermon this month that pro-Israel members of Congress were "stooges" of the Jewish state who should be charged with "treason."FreeBeacon
On May 3, Hassan Qazwini, the imam of the Islamic Institute of America, railed against lawmakers who days earlier voted for the Anti-Semitism Awareness Act. The measure, which passed with a vote of 320-91, would require the Department of Education to adopt a widely accepted definition of anti-Semitism for investigations into anti-Semitic incidents on college campuses.
"If there was justice in this country, those congressmen and women would be indicted and convicted of treason," said the Iraq-born Qazwini, whose remarks were first reported by the Middle Eastern Media Research Institute. He asserted lawmakers who voted for the bill "do not work for the interest of the United States, rather for the interests of a foreign country."
"Nothing but stooges of Israel," he said.
Two months before the fiery sermon, Tlaib and Dearborn mayor Abdullah Hammoud, a rising star in the anti-Israel movement, attended a fundraiser with Qazwini for the Islamic Institute of America, based in Dearborn Heights. Qazwini honored Tlaib and Hammoud at the banquet for their "courage and outspokenness against American biases towards Israel." The trio posed for a photo at the ceremony, attended by a number of Dearborn city officials and Arab-American community leaders.
Whitmer, considered a potential Democratic presidential candidate, appeared at a fundraiser for the mosque in 2022 and was photographed with Qazwini.
Qazwini’s anti-Semitic views are nothing new, raising questions for Tlaib and Hammoud about their affiliation with the cleric. In 2020, Qazwini came under fire for his remarks several years earlier that the terrorist group ISIS "somehow is connected to Israel." In a 2016 sermon, Qazwini said that Israel has used the United States as a "cash cow" and that President Barack Obama was "bowing to the pro-Israeli lobby." He referred to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), who Qazwini later endorsed for president, as "an honorable man, even though he is a Jew."
Tlaib’s office and Hammoud’s office did not respond to requests for comment about their recent contact with Qazwini.
Tlaib’s affiliation with anti-Israel and pro-terrorist elements are well known. She has met with and attended fundraisers hosted by numerous Hamas supporters. Qazwini contributed $500 to her congressional campaign in 2021, according to campaign finance records. The House of Representatives censured her for circulating the statement, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," a call for the eradication of Israel.
While Tlaib has been somewhat marginalized within the Democratic Party, Hammoud has emerged as a darling of the pro-Palestinian cause. In a glowing profile last month, the Washington Post praised Hammoud for leading the anti-Israel movement while balancing the duties of mayor of a medium-sized city. The Post, which said Hammoud has gone from "little-known mayor to national figure," touted Hammoud’s refusal to meet with Biden campaign officials earlier this year over opposition to President Joe Biden’s military support for Israel in its war against Hamas.
Unmentioned in the positive press coverage is Hammoud’s alliance with Dearborn-based activists who endorse Hamas’s violence. Osama Siblani, the publisher of the Arab-American News, introduced Hammoud at an event in 2022 with a speech in which Siblani called on the United States to provide Palestinians with "military aid to fight Israelis." Siblani has called Hamas and other terrorist groups "freedom fighters" and urged Islamic militants to fight Israel with "stones" and "guns."
Hours after the Hamas’s Oct. 7 invasion, in which 1,200 Israelis were murdered, Hammoud said the attack should be viewed in the "context" of Israel’s "illegal military occupation" of Gaza.
Dearborn has emerged as a hotbed of anti-Israel activity under Hammoud’s watch, with the Wall Street Journal dubbing the city "America's Jihad Capital."
Hammoud and Tlaib decried the moniker. Weeks later, attendees at a rally outside Dearborn City Hall chanted, "Death to America" and "Death to Israel."

SMART BOMB
The Completely Unnecessary News Analysis
By Christopher Smart
November 28, 2023
MIKE LEE: DEAR SANTA STUFF MY STOCKING WITH MAGA $$$
Utah Senator-for-Life Mike Lee asked Santa for donations from the fake electors who he hoped would throw the 2020 presidential election to Trump. Not long after Joe Biden's victory the Utah senator had sneaky tête-à-têtes with Santa's helpers state legislators, congressmen, senators and the White House — scheming to keep Donald Trump in power. The ruse was to use fake electors in swing states to throw the election into chaos that would lead to the House of Representatives choosing the president. Voilà Trump is reelected. The scam fizzled, such a shame, but on the bright side Christmas came early for Lee. Fake electors donated at least $25,000 to his campaign fund and PAC stockings. Recently, Lee pushed the debunked accusation that FBI agents were spearheading the Jan. 6 capital insurrection. Right, when Trump told his supporters to come to D.C. on Jan. 6 because “it's going to be wild,” he was really saying federal agents would overthrow the government. That should be worth a lot more cash for Lee. You see, Lee's caught on to the Trump strategy perfected by Marjorie Taylor Greene: say crazy stuff and watch Santa make your coffers grow and grow. Once squeaky-clean Mike Lee has drunk the Kool-Aid and Christmas is now year-round. Deck the halls!
OH COME YE, 'TISS THE SEASON FOR THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS
Yes, it's that time of year again when festivities abound with giving and brotherhood and the celebration of a White Christian Nation Christmas. But wait, there is something sinister a foot — yes it's The War on Christmas by liberals, the ACLU, Jews, Muslims, and Klingons. For them saying,“Merry Christmas” is like saying, “Hang Mike Pence,” and they insist the First Amendment is about freedom of religion for Jews and Muslims, too. If elementary kids say, “Merry Christmas,” it's a slur against non-believers. Luckily we have a Christian warrior against the War on Christmas — the newly anointed Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. He fights so school kids can say, “Merry Christmas,” instead of, “Happy Holidays” — a very un-Christlike salutation that undercuts White Christian Nationalism. “The ultimate goal of the enemy is silencing the gospel of Jesus,” Johnson said. “This is spiritual warfare.” Some of those liberals say that, “Happy Holidays” is more inclusive and allows Jews and Muslims to feel included in the festivities. But former Fox host Bill O'Reilly set the record straight in 2016: “That (Christmas) culture war issue ignited and we won,” adding, “Donald Trump is on the case.” So, if you want a beautiful White Nationalist Christian nation, vote Trump. Merry Christmas!
RANKED CHOICE VOTING AND ITALIAN SATELLITES
Hey Wilson, have you and the guys in the band heard of this thing called ranked choice voting? Well, someone somewhere decided the voting system that we've been using since 1789 wasn't good enough. It's not that things weren't working as they should, except maybe for the election of Trump, but some folks like to change things just for the sake of change or maybe they got tired of losing. Anyway, it goes like this: voters rank the candidates in order: first, second and third. If a candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, they win. But if none get a majority then the candidate with the least first-preference votes bites the dust. OK, so this is where you really have to be sober to grasp this. All the first-preference votes for the failed candidate are erased and the second-preference votes on those ballots are elevated to first-preference. Then a new count of first-preference votes is tallied and so on. You're right Wilson, Republicans would immediately be screaming “voter fraud from Italian satellites.” If they don't comprehend the old way of balloting how will they ever accept results from the ranked choice system. You can guess what'll happen when the Freedom Caucus and Marjorie Taylor Greene get ahold of this: Jan. 6 will actually look like a patriotic family picnic.
Post script — That's going to do it for another carefree week here at Smart Bomb where we keep track of Paris Hilton so you don't have to. Hey Wilson, do you know what Paris Hilton named her new baby daughter? London. London Hilton. Yes, we know you and the band once stayed at the London Hilton. Her first child is a boy named Phoenix. So there's Paris, Phoenix and London. The staff got to thinking about possible names for her next kid. One of the staff's favorite choices is Tooele — Tooele Hilton. It has a ring to it. Another staff pick is Beaver, which could be for a boy or a girl. Beaver Hilton. Well, maybe not for a girl. The best one for a girl is Tabiona. Tabiona Hilton. How sweet. Changing gears, here's an example of why Americans are in a bad mood. Topher Olive went to a McDonald’s in Post Falls, Idaho, according to The Washington Post, and ordered a limited edition “smoky” double quarter pounder BLT with fries and a Sprite — total $16.10. It sticks in the craw. Even though unemployment is down and wages are up, Americans remain bummed out. Inflation. Of course, it's Joe Biden's fault. But the White House has a plan called “Burgernomics” where, theoretically, fast food will trickle down to people jonesing for burgers and fries and McNugget Happy Meals.
Well Wilson, like it or not Christmas is upon us. There's Black Friday and Cyber Monday and people spend a lot of money and businesses make beaucoup bucks. But where in all this is the guy from Nazareth. He preached to the poor and discouraged hoarding earthly possessions. So Wilson, if you can, please take us out with something with love and salvation — we need it:
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river You can hear the boats go by / You can spend the night beside her And you know that she's half crazy / But that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges / That come all the way from China And just when you mean to tell her / That you have no love to give her Then she gets you on her wavelength / And she lets the river answer That you've always been her lover / And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind / And you know that she will trust you For you've touched her perfect body with your mind.
And Jesus was a sailor / When he walked upon the water And he spent a long time watching / From his lonely wooden tower And when he knew for certain / Only drowning men could see him He said "All men will be sailors then / Until the sea shall free them" But he himself was broken / Long before the sky would open Forsaken, almost human / He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone And you want to travel with him / And you want to travel blind And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.
Now Suzanne takes your hand / And she leads you to the river She is wearing rags and feathers / From Salvation Army counters And the sun pours down like honey / On our lady of the harbour And she shows you where to look / Among the garbage and the flowers There are heroes in the seaweed / There are children in the morning They are leaning out for love / And they will lean that way forever While Suzanne holds the mirror / And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind / And you know that you can trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.
(Suzanne — Leonard Cohen)

Tuesday's temperature check (procès-verbaux of 5-28)
Whew! That long holiday weekend is over. I could use a nap. At least I didn’t have to travel out of town. Nearly 44 million Americans traveled in some fashion over the Memorial Day weekend. Over 2.9 million passengers were screened at airports across the country Friday, marking the most individuals screened by TSA in 22 years, according to the agency. TSA is just a step in the journey of a thousand miles. If you’re flying by Southwest, you’ve got to get there early to preserve the ability to select something other than a middle seat. Coming along with that middle seat, of course is lack of overhead bin storage. Although Southwest allows passengers to pick their own seat, a recent passenger flummoxed fellow flyers after she was filmed napping in the plane’s overhead bin. The record of our sleepy traveler’s exploit was posted on TikTok and received 5.1 million views (mostly by Congressmen shortly before voting to shutter the popular app). The video was not clear about whether the inflight napper was a passenger or crew or what her motivation was for treating the baggage storage container as a slumber pod. The video also left out other tidbits of curiosity for this suitcase cosplay. How did she get up there? Was there no more room under the seat in front of her? Why wasn’t she gate checked? Airline etiquette has certainly become a relic of the bygone era along with peanuts or free seating in an exit row. This stunt ranks right up there with taking off your shoes or eating a full plate of barbeque ribs in the middle seat.
Hopefully she arrived refreshed.
Stay safe!
Tom
This traveler has bin places. Jet lag can be a new story line for a disaster film.

Texas in despair: Has US government traded it for Ukraine?
The US has resolved the months-long intrigue over the allocation of aid to Ukraine. The House of Representatives managed to persuade the Republicans to switch to their side, although they had previously promised to help Texas in its fight against illegal migration.
Nearly six months of tug-of-war over aid allocation almost shook faith in the government and the power of the US. However, on 20 April, the decision was made: the bill on $60.64 billion in aid to Ukraine was approved by 311 congressmen, while 114 voted against it. It would seem that it is time to rejoice, because the long tedious debate has come to an end and brought certainty to the US political course, but disappointment is in the air.
First of all, the vote split the Republicans. A majority of Republicans – 112 to 101 – voted against the bailout. The party of former US president and current candidate Donald Trump has previously repeatedly said that the issue of the southern border of the state comes first. The state of Texas has to contend with the problem of illegal migration, which has repeatedly asked for help from the administration of current President Joe Biden. However, in the end, Texas not only did not receive help, but also met resistance in the face of the presidential administration, Mail Online reported.
In December, 225,000 migrants travelled across the state border into the US – a record number since 2000. At the same time, Governor Abbott signed SB4 into law, allowing local authorities to arrest and deport illegals on their own – without the involvement of the feds. On 22 January, the US Supreme Court ordered the Texas authorities to allow federal border guards to the border with Mexico to remove barbed wire fences. They were built by Texans themselves at the will of their governor and now they themselves protect them from the encroachments of the feds.

Congressman Jeremiah Haralson (April 1, 1846 - March 25, 1916) was born near Columbus, Georgia. He was taken to Alabama where he remained in bondage until 1865. Some records suggest he may have been a farmer and clergyman. He taught himself to read and write and became a skilled orator and debater.
In 1868, he made his first unsuccessful attempt for a seat in the Forty-first Congress, representing Alabama’s First District. He won a seat in Alabama’s House of Representatives and in 1872 was elected to the State Senate. He ran for the House of Representatives. He won the Republican primary. Soon after the primary Bromberg accused him of voter fraud and sought to deny him his seat. The Democrats who controlled the House of Representatives supported him and on March 4, 1875, he took his seat in Congress.
He supported the policies of President Ulysses Grant and urged African American voters to remain loyal to the Republican Party. Appointed to the House Committee on Public Expenditures, he introduced legislation to use proceeds from public land sales for educational purposes and the relief of the Medical College of Alabama. He broke with other Republican-era African American Congressmen by criticizing the use of federal soldiers to control violence and ensure orderly voting in the South. He favored general amnesty for former Confederates.
In 1876 he stood for election in the newly created, predominately African American Fourth Congressional District. This district was represented by African American Congressman James T. Rapier. He won the primary but lost narrowly. He contested the results before the House of Representatives but on this occasion, the House ruled in favor of his Democratic opponent.
In 1879 he became a clerk at Baltimore’s Federal Customs House. He held a similar post in the Department of the Interior. Then he worked for the Pension Bureau in Washington from 1882-1884. In 1904 he went to Arkansas, where he worked as a pension agent. In 1912 he returned to Alabama and settled in Selma. He went to Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado, where at the age of 70 he took up coal mining. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Former KCIA Head Says Park Tong Sun was Korean Agent (1977)
By Richard Halloran The New York Times June 5, 1977
WASHINGTON, June 4—A former Director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, Kim Hyung Wook, has broken a long silence to identify Park Tong Sun as a K.C.I.A. agent who spent millions of dollars on an allegedly illegal scheme to influence American policy on Korea.
“When I was Director of the K.C.I.A.,” Mr. Kim said, “he was my agent. I controlled Park at that time,” he said, although Mr. Park was in touch with other officers of the agency in the Korean Embassy here.
Mr. Kim's statement contradicts repeated denials from the South Korean Government that Mr. Park was working for the K.C.I.A. or acted in any way for the Government. Moreover, Mr. Kim's evidence appears to be a signal contribution to Federal and Congressional investigations since it is the first positive identification of Mr. Park as a foreign agent, a critical point in the inquiries. Federal investigators would not discuss what Mr. Kim had told them or publicly evaluate his statements.
Other Agents Named
Mr. Kim further named several other agency operatives and, in a series of wide‐ranging interviews, gave a new account of the origin and expansion of South Korean intelligence activities in the United States, thus adding a deeper and wider dimension to the scope of the Korean scandal here. Mr. Kim is the most authoritative firsthand source to describe, for the record Seoul's six‐year covert effort to affect the policies of the Nixon and Ford Administrations, the votes and public statements of key Congressmen and the attitudes of Americans toward Korea.A self‐imposed exile who lives outside New York City, Mr. Him said that he was speaking out now because he believed that the scandal threatened to disrupt America's commitment to Korea. “I can no longer defend President Park by remaining silent,” he said.
Mr. Kim asserted that President Park Chung Hee was responsible for the scandal and should apologize to the American people. He called on Mr. Park to resign to clear the way for a new South Korean Government that would negotiate a peace treaty with Communist North Korea.Mr. Kim, an army officer by training and one of the young colonels who came to power in the coup of 1961, deplored President Carter's decision to withdraw American ground forces from Korea, advocating postponement until a peace treaty is concluded. He described the loosely organized Korean intelligence apparatus in the United States and his account corroborated, with fuller details, those from earlier sources, usually unnamed. He identified the fol lowing as agents:¶Nark Tong Sun, the wealthy businessman at the center of the investigaLtions here. Mr. Kim said that after he heft office in 1969, Mr. Park continued to be a K.C.I.A. agent. Mr. Kim's evidence is vital to the investigations here because, while it is illegal for a Congressman to accept gifts from a foreign government without the consent of Congress, some Representatives have admitted taking campaign contributions, money for office funds and lavish entertainment from Mr. Park, who is reported to be in London and unavailable.
¶Kim Han Cho, known here as Hancho C. Kim, a businessman who lives outside Washington and is a trustee of American University. Kim Han Cho, according to Mr. Kim, was recruited in 1975 to replace Mr. Park, who had fallen out of favor. Early in 1976, Kim Han Cho received $600,000 ordered by President Park for lobbying expenses, Mr. Kim said. Other sources have reported that Kim Han Cho, who declined to be interviewed, sought to establish a Korean listening post at American University.
¶Moon Sun Myung. leader of the Unification Church. Mr. Kim suggested that Mr. Moon was of marginal value to the K.C.I.A., which did not trust him. But Mr. Noon, he said, was considered useful as a propagandist for President Park. Spokesmen for the Reverend Moon have denied a connection with the K.C.I.A.
¶Pak Bo Hi, chief lieutenant to Mr. Moon and head of the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation. Mr. Kim said Plat Colonel Pak ran a separate operation, had an “intimate relationship” with the K.C.I.A. and made Mr. Moon famous. “It was all Pak Bo Hi's idea.” Mr. Kim said. Colonel Pak has declined to be interviewed.
¶Han Byung Ki, until recently the deputy ambassador in the South Korean observer mission at the United Nations and presently ambassador to Canada. Mr. Han, who is President Park's son‐in‐law, was responsible for K.C.I.A. policy and controlled agency officers in the embassy and consulates, Mr. Kim said. Mr. Han's mission was to prevent anti‐Park dissidence among Korean residents of the United States and to promote Korea's image Mr. Han declined to be interviewed.
Sue Park Thomson Named
Mr. Kim also identified several lesser operatives, including Alexander Kim, a New York lawyer; Charles Kim, former chairman of the Diplomat National Bank here; Jhoon Rhee, head of a chain of karate gyms in Washington, and Sue Park Thomson, the Korean‐born former aide to the previous Speaker of the House, Carl Albert of Oklahoma. The two Kims, who are brothers, and Mr. Rhee have denied connections with the Korean agency. Mrs. Thomson has declined comment.
Mr. Kim said that in 1969, the Korean agency had only two officers in the Embassy, two at the United Nations mission and one in Los Angeles, which has a large Korean community. The staff grew in the 1970's, he said, to 12 or 14 in the Embassy and more in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and elsewhere. Korean officials said that most were recalled after having been exposed recently.
Mr. Kim came to prominence in May 1961, when he took part in the coup led by then Gen. Park Chung Hee. He was in the ruling junta for the next two years and in 1963 became head of the K.C.I.A. In that post Mr. Kim was among the most powerful men in Korea, being at the head of the agency charged with internal security, police and political controls, and foreign intelligence, until he was eased out in late 1969.
Mr.Kim continued to support President Park and was elected to the National Assembly in 1971. But he disagreed when President Park, in October 1972, revised the constitution to give himself unlimited power, and so he slipped out of Seoul for exile in the United States in April 1973.
Mr. Kim, who is 52, is considered by Korean specialists to be well‐informed, having maintained his Seoul contacts. He speaks modest English and prefers to discuss serious matters through an interpreter.
Began Almost by Accident
The Korean agency's covert effort to influence American policy began almost by accident, according to Mr. Kim. In the early 1960's, Park Tong Sun became a friend to Chung II Kwon, the Korean ambassador in Washington. After Mr. Chung returned to Seoul and became Prime Minister in 1964, he introduced Mr. Park to Mr. Kim at the agency.
Mr. Chung also introduced Mr. Park to Lee Hu Rak, then President Park's chief assistant and later a successor to Mr. Kim as head of the K.C.I.A. Mr. Chung also introduced Mr. Park to Presi dent Park himself. Mr. Park is believed not to be related to the President, although he has sometimes left that impression.
Mr. Kim said that Mr. Park offered to persuade his friends in the American Congress to vote for more military aid to South Korea. In return, he asked to be named sole agent for the sale of American rice to Korea. No other compensation was arranged, Mr. Kim said.
At first, Mr. Park was not considered very successful, Mr. Kim said. From 1967 to 1969, he said, Mr. Park gave American Congressmen what he called “pocket money,” not campaign contributions, and it did not amount to much.
But in 1970, Mr. Kim said, Mr. Park became active. Other sources have said that American Central Intelligence Agency cables at that time reported meetings in the Blue House, the President's executive mansion, at which plans for influencing the American Administration and Congress were discussed.
Mr. Kim said he did not know about those meetings but did recall a meeting in which Mr. Park discussed with President Park ways in which Korea could build up its influence with Congress. The Koreans feared a drop in the United States commitment because 20,000 American soldiers were being withdrawn from South Korea.
List of 90 Congressmen Drawn
Mr. Kim said that he and Mr. Park remained in touch, even though Mr. Kim was no longer K.C.I.A. director, because Mr. Kim's successor did not fully support Mr. Park's mission. Mr. Park “asked me to make the K.C.I.A. understand that he had some influence in Washington,” Mr. Kim said.
About that time, Mr. Kim said, the Korean agency and Mr. Park drew up a list of about 90 Congressmen and their committee assignments. That list is belived to have been seized by American customs officials when Mr. Park entered the United States in December 1973.
Before that, Mr. Kim said, Mr. Park showed him the list in Seoul. When asked if he could remember some of the names on it, Mr. Kim shook his head and said: “No, you must remember that in those days all American names looked alike to me.”
After 1970, Mr. Kim said, a lot of money was involved in Mr. Park's operation. The Korean Government was buying more rice and from 197.1 to 1975, Mr. Park got between $500,000 and $1 million a year in commissions for his lobbying operation. Whatever money went to Congressmen, Mr. Kim said, went directly from Mr. Park and was always in cash.
$600,000 Sent for Lobbying
By 1975, however, Mr. Park was in disfavor with the Korean agency because he was thought to be under surveillance by American Federal agents, Mr. Kim said.
The agency then turned to Kim Han Cho, the businessman and trustee of American University, Mr. Kim said, and on orders from President Park, sent Kim Han Cho two $300,000 allotments to cover lobbying expenses.
What became of the money is not known, Mr. Kim said. There is little evidence so far that Kim Han Cho engaged in much lobbying on Capitol Hill, although he is said to have gone there several times.
A separate operation was run by Pak Bo Hi, who took instructions from Seoul through the K.C.I.A. station chief in the Embassy here, and the Unification Church and its affiliates, according to Mr. Kim. Other sources have said that Mr. Pak and the church supported President Nixon, did some lobbying on Capitol Hill and generally tried to improve the Korean image in America.
A third operation was run by Ambassador Han from his office in the observer mission at the United Nations, and he reported directly to President Park, Mr. Kim said. Mr. Han, who came to the United States in 1975, maintained a separate office and a separate staff there that included intelligence officers.
In his open break with President Park, whom Mr. Kim described as “my comrade in arms and personal friend,” Mr. Kim contended that if the President “truly loved the country and the people truly, he would step aside.”
Mr. Kim, an avowed anti‐Communist, charged that President Park had failed to kindle an ideological spirit in South Korea and had sought only to perpetuate his own rule.
Further, he asserted, the North Koreans would refuse to negotiate with the South Korean Government because President Park had deceived them. Mr. Kim called for a new, elected Government that would negotiate a peace treaty with the North Koreans.
On the matter of troop withdrawals, Mr. Kim said that President Park wanted American troops out of Korea to reduce what he considered “American interference” in matters such as human rights. Mr. Kim said the Korean Government's expressed reluctance to see the troops leave was intended only to bargain for a large sum of money as the price of withdrawal.

It's less a political science issue and more of a legal system issue. The American justice system uses the "innocent until proven guilty" standard. So yes, he's been indicted/charged. But he hasn't been "proven guilty."
What that means is that under the justice system, a prosecutor has gone and said "hey, we would like to accuse Donald Trump of something and there is suspicious stuff!!! We are searching for MORE suspicious stuff!!! We are asking his suspicious friends questions!!! There is enough suspicious stuff to warrant a jury to want a trial!!!"
But the whole process of showing evidence, arguing in court, letting him mount a defense, proving that the prosecutor has done all the research right, proving that the defense is wrong, proving that he's guilty--that hasn't happened yet.
Yes, he gets benefits from being rich and famous. He can post bail, he can afford amazing lawyers (plural, multiple lawyers), he can hide behind a veneer of respectability that being a former president grants him, he has employees he can throw under the bus, he can threaten potential witnesses with losing their jobs or breaking contracts.
But ultimately, he has not been proven guilty in a court of law, and he gets all the guarantees of "innocent until proven guilty."
Add onto the fact that political parties are Not Controlled By the Federal Government.
Parties sponsor politicians into positions of government.
Parties Operate Independently of the federal government.
Parties are allowed to sponsor whoever they want that they think their voters will vote for and the federal government is Not Supposed to Interfere. If the Republican Party wanted to pick ✨️Kim Kardashian for presidential candidate 2024, the federal government would have to let them do it. She's an American citizen over 35 years old.
If the Democrat Party wanted to pick a pro-choice, pro-immigration, tax the rich, lower Congressmen salaries, increase minimum wage, autistic lesbian woman with ADHD for presidential candidate 2024--the federal government would have to let them do that too!
The government can create regulations for parties, but if they created a new law saying that people who have been charged--people not yet proven guilty--will no longer be able to campaign, that would be a 🔥disaster 🔥 It would open up politically-motivated trials to everyone! Imagine if you couldn't run for the local Board of Education because neighbor Karen decided to sue you for parking in front of her driveway. Imagine if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was sued for a faked thievery that was later proven false but missed her campaign window.
The "innocent until proven guilty" standard is benefitting ALOT of other Americans.
The federal government cannot slap a law banning Trump campaigning without catching other American citizens in the same net. Rule of law: a law for one = a law for all. ⚖️
But the Republican Party can do something! The Republican Party can gatekeep. It's an organization. It has "freedom of association" claims. It can say who is and who is not allowed to join. It can absolutely say "hey, we don't want you as a member." Mitch McConnel can say something. Senior Republican leadership can pressure the caucuses. Republican congressmen can condemn Trump. Republican voters can refuse to vote for candidates that constantly support Trump.
And ultimately, the Republican Party and his supporters has decided that this man with multiple indictments, this man who is on-record saying horrible things, this man who incapacitated FEMA/education/taxes/the immigration process/reproductive rights/etc, this man who has broken so many standards of decency----they have decided this man is somehow still worth supporting in a bid for president.
(Obviously I know the American legal system does not operate under an ideal and not-everybody gets all the protections and people get fucked over wrongly for a variety of bigoted reasons, but in terms of political reasoning for the gov not banning Trump from campaigning...the political and legal reasoning is meant to be protective of all US citizens.)
Can someone genuinely politically competent (PoliSci majors or smth idk) come tell me why the fuck the US is letting Trump campaign when he’s been indicted so many times? Seriously, I want an answer here.
Why are they letting him even PRETEND to run for President if he has all these charges against him?
Is it so he’s too busy with his delusions that he’s gonna get into office again that he won’t go into hiding like a little pussy to escape consequences?
Is it so he has a platform to spout more incriminating shit against himself so they can get him in even deeper trouble?
Is it because legal things take 9000 fucking years so while the government or justice system or whatever is fumbling to get his rich stupid criminal ass in prison, he’s speedrunning his campaign to get into office so he’s “safe” from consequences again? (Bc we all saw how impeachment failed multiple times 🙃)
Or are our legal and government systems just THAT corrupt and fucked that there’s no hope anything is REALLY going to come out of this and we’re just all doomed to suffer being powerless witnesses to the next torrent of stupid shit he does as “president?” Am I just on obscene amounts of copium here hoping there’s a real and sensible reason he’s not in prison and/or deplatformed and barred from campaigning yet?
I’m so fucking tired and angry and hopeless. I have no faith in our country or government or legal/justice systems to do ANYTHING when it matters, because god forbid they do something that would actually do the country some good instead of attacking innocent people and bickering in courts over stupid shit like “should trans people have the right to take a shit in public?” or “should women be able to remove a clump of cells from their body so they don’t fucking die or fall into financial ruin?”
I NEED someone to give me an honest and logical understanding of why the fuck he’s running when he’s literally a proven treasonous criminal because I’m at the end of my fucking rope here.
Reblogs would be appreciated from anyone who doesn’t have half the words I said here blacklisted so maybe this reaches someone who will answer me.

The Real Meaning of January 6
January 6 will be remembered as one of the most shameful days in American history. On that date in 2021, the United States Capitol was attacked by thousands of armed loyalists to Donald Trump, some intent on killing members of Congress. Roughly 140 officers were injured in the attack. Five people died that day.
But even now, almost a year later, Americans remain confused and divided about the significance of what occurred.
Let me offer four basic truths:
1. Trump incited the attack on the Capitol.
For weeks before the attack, Trump had been urging his supporters to come to Washington for a “Save America March” on January 6, when Congress was to ceremonially count the electoral votes of Joe Biden’s win. Without any basis in fact or law (60 federal courts as well as the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security concluded that there was no evidence of substantial fraud), Trump repeatedly asserted he had won the 2020 election and Biden had lost it.
“Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!” Trump tweeted on December 19. Then on December 26: “See you in Washington, DC, on January 6th. Don’t miss it. Information to follow.” On December 30: “JANUARY SIXTH, SEE YOU IN DC!” On January 1: “The BIG Protest Rally in Washington, D.C. will take place at 11:00 A.M. on January 6th. Locational details to follow. StopTheSteal!”
At a rally just before the violence, Trump repeated his falsehoods about how the election was stolen. “We will never give up,” he said. “We will never concede. It will never happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore.”
He told the crowd that Republicans are constantly fighting like a boxer with his hands tied behind his back, respectful of everyone — “including bad people.”
But, he said, “we’re going to have to fight much harder…. We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong…. We fight like hell. And if you don't fight like hell, you're not going to have a country anymore."
He then told the crowd that “different rules” applied to them. “When you catch somebody in a fraud, you are allowed to go by very different rules. So I hope Mike [Pence] has the courage to do what he has to do, and I hope he doesn’t listen to the RINOs [Republicans in Name Only] and the stupid people that he’s listening to.”
Then he dispatched the crowd to the Capitol as the electoral count was about to start. The attack on the Capitol came immediately after.
2. The events of January 6 capped two months during which Trump sought to reverse the outcome of the election.
Shortly after the election, Trump summoned to the White House Republican lawmakers from Pennsylvania and Michigan, to inquire about how they might alter the election results. He even called two local canvassing board officials in Wayne County, Michigan’s most populous county and one that overwhelmingly favored Biden.
He phoned Georgia’s Republican secretary of state to “find 11,780 votes,” according to a recording of that conversation, adding “the people of Georgia are angry, the people of the country are angry. And there’s nothing wrong with saying that, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated.”
He suggested that Georgia’s secretary of state would be criminally prosecuted if he did not do as Trump told him. “You know what they did and you’re not reporting it. You know, that’s a criminal — that’s a criminal offense. And you know, you can’t let that happen. That’s a big risk to you and to Ryan, your lawyer. That’s a big risk.”
He pressed the acting US attorney general and deputy attorney general to declare the election fraudulent. When the deputy said the department had found no evidence of widespread fraud and warned that it had no power to change the outcome of the election, Trump replied “Just say that the election was corrupt + leave the rest to me” and to Trump’s congressional allies.
Trump and his allies continued to harangue the attorney general and top Justice Department officials nearly every day until January 6. Trump plotted with an assistant attorney general to oust the acting attorney general and pressure lawmakers in Georgia to overturn the state’s election results. But Trump ultimately decided against it after top department leaders pledged to resign en masse.
Presumably, more details of Trump’s attempted coup will emerge after the House Select Committee on January 6 gathers more evidence and deposes more witnesses.
3. Trump’s attempted coup continues to this day.
Trump still refuses to concede the election and continues to assert it was stolen. He presides over a network of loyalists and allies who have sought to overturn the election (and erode public confidence in it) by mounting partisan state “audits” and escalating attacks on state election officials. When asked recently about the fraudulent claims and increasingly incendiary rhetoric, a Trump spokeswoman said that the former president “supports any patriotic American who dedicates their time and effort to exposing the rigged 2020 Presidential Election.”
Trump recently announced he would be hosting a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on January 6.
“Remember,” he said in the announcement “the insurrection took place on November 3rd. It was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th." (Reminder: they were armed.) Trump then referred to the House investigation: "Why isn't the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020?"
He went on to castigate "Rinos," presumably referring to his opponents within the party, such as Republican Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who sit on the January 6 committee. "In many ways a Rino is worse than a Radical Left Democrat," Trump said, "because you don't know where they are coming from and you have no idea how bad they really are for our Country.” He added, “the good news is there are fewer and fewer RINOs left as we elect strong Patriots who love America.”
Trump has endorsed a primary challenger to Cheney, while Kinzinger will leave Congress at the next election. Trump and other Republicans have also moved to punish 13 House Republicans who bucked party leadership and voted for a bipartisan infrastructure bill in November.
4. All of this reveals a deep problem in America that must be addressed
Trump and his co-conspirators must be held accountable, of course. Hopefully, the Select Committee’s report will be used by the Justice Department in criminal prosecutions of Trump and his accomplices.
But this in itself will not solve the underlying problem. A belligerent and narcissistic authoritarian has gained a powerful hold over a large portion of America. As many as 60 percent of Republican voters continue to believe his lies. Many remain intensely loyal. The Republican party is close to becoming a cult whose central animating idea is that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.
Trump has had help, of course. Fox News hosts and Facebook groups have promoted and amplified his ravings for their own purposes. Republicans in Congress and in the states have played along.
But even with this help, Trump’s attempted coup could not have gotten this far without something more basic: A substantial portion of the American population feels an anger and despair that has made them susceptible to Trump’s swagger and lies.
It is too simplistic to attribute this solely to racism or xenophobia. America has harbored white supremacist and anti-immigrant sentiments since its founding. The despair Trump has channeled is more closely connected to a profound loss of identity, dignity and purpose, especially among Americans who have been left behind – without college degrees, without good jobs, in places that have been economically abandoned and disdained by much of the rest of the country.
The wages of these Americans have not risen in forty years, adjusted for inflation, even though the economy is now three times larger than it was four decades ago. The norm of upward mobility has been shattered for these Americans. Through their eyes, the entire American system is now rigged against them.
This part of America yearns for a strongman to deliver it from despair. Trump has filled that void. To be sure, he’s filled it with bombast, lies, paranoia, and neofascism. But he has filled it nonetheless.
The challenge ahead is to fill it with a democracy and economy that work for everyone. Unless we understand and respond to this fundamental truth, we will miss the true meaning of January 6.

Red Record of Lynching Map, 1922.
This map was submitted to Congress in 1922 to support an anti-lynching bill, H. R. 13, introduced by Representative Leonidas Dyer of Missouri. The Dyer bill had already passed in the House and awaited a vote in the Senate. Issued by the Colored Women’s Clubs of Michigan, the “Red Record” shows the distribution of lynchings by state and specifically calls out Northern congressmen who voted against the Dyer bill.

CAPITOL MEN: The Epic Story of Reconstruction Through the Lives of the First Black Congressmen Paperback – International Edition, February 11, 2010
Reconstruction was a time of idealism and sweeping change, as the victorious Union created citizenship rights for the freed slaves and granted the vote to black men. Sixteen black Southerners, elected to the U.S. Congress, arrived in Washington to advocate reforms such as public education, equal rights, land distribution, and the suppression of the Ku Klux Klan.
But these men faced astounding odds. They were belittled as corrupt and inadequate by their white political opponents, who used legislative trickery, libel, bribery, and the brutal intimidation of their constituents to rob them of their base of support. Despite their status as congressmen, they were made to endure the worst humiliations of racial prejudice. And they have been largely forgotten—often neglected or maligned by standard histories of the period.
In this beautifully written book, Philip Dray reclaims their story. Drawing on archival documents, contemporary news accounts, and congressional records, he shows how the efforts of black Americans revealed their political perceptiveness and readiness to serve as voters, citizens, and elected officials. We meet men like the war hero Robert Smalls of South Carolina (who had stolen a Confederate vessel and delivered it to the Union navy), Robert Brown Elliott (who bested the former vice president of the Confederacy in a stormy debate on the House floor), and the distinguished former slave Blanche K. Bruce (who was said to possess “the manners of a Chesterfield”). As Dray demonstrates, these men were eloquent, creative, and often effective representatives who, as support for Reconstruction faded, were undone by the forces of Southern reaction and Northern indifference.
In a grand narrative that traces the promising yet tragic arc of Reconstruction, Dray follows these black representatives’ struggles, from the Emancipation Proclamation to the onset of Jim Crow, as they fought for social justice and helped realize the promise of a new nation.

Do you think there should be term limits for congress?
no. i don't see much benefit from the idea and i see too many negatives. would like to see term limits removed for the president as well.
people who suggest it claim it gets rid of career politicians and reduces corruption.
first, here in california we have term limits at the state level. far from getting rid of career politicians it just accelerates their creation. there is more to politics than just the legislature. many congressmen, once their term limit is up, just end up getting a nice bureaucratic job in another branch or department or some other corporation or ngo. term limits don't get rid of career politicians. they make more of them and make them harder to see.
second, i don't even agree that getting rid of career politicians is necessarily desirable. maybe this is a hot take but anyone who has ever been in a management position knows how much skill it actually requires and how much of that skill comes from experience and relationships. so i think having long-term politicians with lots of experience and lots of established relationships is actually generally a good thing.
thirdly, i am skeptical that it reduces corruption. on the contrary i'd expect it to increase corruption. one of the often cited forms of corruption is lobbying (i don't know that i would say lobbying is inherently corrupt tho, but that's a different topic) but i feel like rapidly revolving, newer, younger, more inexperienced politicians will be far more susceptible to being influenced by interest groups than a long-term highly established politician would. i also think newer term-limited politicians will have less to lose and less investment in the future than a term-unlimited politician would.
fourthly (just some miscellaneous things that come to mind), having revolving politicians will result in less voter turnout; people aren't going to be able or willing to keep up with all the new names and faces. term-limit advocates say it'll encourage people to engage with politics and become more informed but probably they will just vote for whoever the previous candidate endorses. it's undemocratic. if someone wants to vote for the same asshole for 3 or 4 or 5 terms who are you to say they can't? in their final term they will not have any incentive to consider the interests of their constituents. they don't have to worry about re-election so why would they? new politicians are unknowns, wild cards. established politicians have records so you have an idea about how they'll vote and what kind of politician they are. lastly, we already have term limits: elections. if a politician is corrupt or of bad character or poor at his/her job, they probably won't be elected again.

Korean Bribe Figure Tied to Bank Inquiry (1977)
By Richard Halloran New York Times Feb. 10, 1977
WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 — American friends of Park Tong Sun, a central figure in the Korean bribery charges here, have disclosed that Mr. Park has asserted that he Was the organizing force behind the formation of a bank that is under Federal investigation here.
The American sources said that Mr. Park had told them he had conceived the idea of the Diplomat National Bank, pulled together the investors—including the Rev. Moon Sun Myung and his followers—and provided some of the initial financing for the $2‐million venture.
Since Mr. Park has been identified as a covert agent for the Korean Government by American officials and former Korean diplomats, his connection with the bank has raised the question whether it has functions beyond its stated purpose of serving the Asian‐American community here.
That, among other things, has made the bank the target of a wide‐ranging investigation by the Federal Reserve Board, according to sources informed abbut the inquiry. It is specifically aimed et letermining whether the bank has violated the Bank Holding Act, which prohibits a person or organized group from holding more than 25 percent of a bank's stock.
The investigators are particularly interested in finding out whether the Unification Church, led by Mr. Moon, or its members have colluded to control the bank. Records at the Comptroller of the Currency. indicate that Mr. Moon and his associates control about 50 percent of the bank's shares.
The Federal Reserve has issued subpoenas for the bank's records and for other financial documents of about 25 persons connected with the Unification Church, according to sources aware of the investigation. Investigators were also said to have questioned many members of the Moon organization.
Grand Jury Gets Data
The chairman of the bank, Charles C. Kim, declined to be interviewed or to answer questions through his attorney. Mr. Park was last reported to be in London and has refused to see newsmen since last October, when allegations that he had bribed American Congressmen were made public.
In a related development, the House of Representatives authorized its ethics committee today to undertake a “full and complete” investigation into allegations that American Congressmen had accepted bribes, gifts and entertainment from Mr. Park and other South Korean Government agents seeking to influence Congress.
The House vote was 388 to 0.
The committee, whose full name is the Committee on Standards of Official Conduct is scheduled to have a budget of $530,000 for an inquiry similar to that under way in the Justice Department. Attorneys there are currently presenting evidence to a grand jury.
When the Diplomat National Bank was organized in 1975. the American sources said, Mr. Park remained behind the scenes and turned to Mr. Kim, a long‐time Pssociate, to undertake the venture for him. In earlier news reports, bank spokesmen were quoted as saying that Mr. Kim was the bank's principal organizer. It was known, however, that Mr, Park had been a hidden investor.
Some Korean sources said that the bank in addition to its commercial function served as a conduit for funds for Mr. Park's rice, oil and shipping businesses and his lobbying operation. But they said that the evidence was thin. largely because Mr. Park operated with cash.
Besides Mr. Kim, Mr. Park was said to have brought into the bank as an investor Pak Bo Hi, the former military intelligence officer who is head of the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation here and a senior aide to Mr. Moon. Several sources, Korean and American, have identified Mr. Pak as an operative of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency.
In turn, Mr. Pak was said to have brought in Mr. Moon and his associates. Federal investigators have been questioning the source of their funds. For instance, Nell A. Salonen, head of the American branch of the Unification Church, invested $30,000 that he said had been borrowed in cash from four friends.
